LOCKED OUT?

The realities of the COVID-19 lockdown are slowly but surely sinking in. The drastic measures instituted by the government are welcomed by many, but these have a devastating effect on small businesses and informal traders, with many feeling that the informal traders have been locked out of all economic activities. This photo was taken on Wednesday morning at the makeshift market stalls at the N1 and Rissik Street crossing in Louis Trichardt. The kiosks were closed down and no more trading took place. The area is frequented by many of the homeless and some of them could still be spotted lingering around in the area. Seemingly no steps have been taken to try and cater for the many homeless people who stay in Eltivillas’s business area.

Tendani Masuka and Doctor Sadiki, two taxi operators, were photographed on Wednesday morning while quickly fixing the brakes on a minibus taxi. They operate on the Dzanani route where they mainly transport passengers from Madombidzha. They welcomed the relief announced by the government earlier this week that allows them to transport up to 10 passengers in their taxis. If they are limited to seven or fewer passengers, making a profit is extremely difficult for taxi operators. They also have to implement social distancing rules and disinfect their vehicles.

Limpopo suspends initiation schools

There are few things in life as traumatic as getting injured during a motor vehicle accident. Did you know... should you or a loved one be injured in an accident (except for when you as the driver was the cause of the collision), or you are a dependant of a deceased victim in a motor vehicle accident, you could possibly submit a claim against the Road Accident Fund. The Road Accident Fund is a public entity which is funded by our fuel levy included in the petrol and diesel prices. The purpose of the Road Accident Fund is to compensate for the loss or damages due to physical injuries as a result of the negligent driving of vehicles on South African roads.

How long after my accident do I have to submit a claim?

If the identity of the negligent / guilty driver, or owner of the vehicle involved, is known, the claim must be submitted within three years of the date of the accident. This is not applicable when it comes to claims of a minor. In the event that the person’s identity is unknown, the claim must be submitted within two years.

Limpopo Province has suspended initiation school programmes scheduled to start during the winter season, saying the step was part of curbing COVID -19.

The chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale, confirmed that they have suspended the initiation school programme.

According to Dikgale, more than 300 applications were received from traditional sur-

geons wishing to conduct the customs and traditional rites in the five districts in the province, but they must suspend them.

“We have never had such a thing like this before. It has never happened, and we have to follow and comply with the regulations,” said Kgoshi Dikgale.

He said they understood the suspension of the initiation school programme might have a negative impact on the traditional surgeons who were ready to perform their traditional rites, but they had

no other option but to suspend the programme.

The MEC for Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGSTA), Mr Basikopo Makamu, warned traditional surgeons around the province against conducting unlawful initiation schools around the programme and said those who did not comply would face the might of the law Makamu said he would conduct meetings with various traditional leaders and surgeons with the intention of making them understand the situation.

A promising young soccer player, Mashudu “Juda” Madzhie (21), was laid to rest at Matshavhawe cemetery on Saturday.

He played for Maelula United Brothers, who are campaigning in the Safa Vhembe SAB league.

Madzhie died a fortnight ago when he allegedly committed suicide.

“This is a huge shock and totally unexpected. We mourn his death,” said the manager of the team, Mr Khathutshelo Muvhumbe.

According to him, Madzhie was an energetic young player who enjoyed football.

Muvhumbe said that the whole area was in deep mourning and the mood was very sombre. Local soccer fanatics will remember him for scoring brilliant goals, as well as for excellent goalkeeping when

needed.

Cllr Kanukani Maphubu expressed his condolences to the grieving family. “Madzhie’s death is not only loss to his family, but to the community and the soccer family as whole. It is sad that he passed away while he still had a lot to contribute to football,” Maphubu said.

The family representative, Mr Steven Mukwevho, said the incident had left them with many unanswered questions. He said all the members of the family were heartbroken. “There are things that we as human beings cannot change. We all have to accept those things and go on with life,” he said. He thanked all the community members, the soccer team and different stakeholders who helped them during the preparations for the funeral.

The spokesperson of the Musina Local Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, said essential services would not be interrupted during the entire lockdown period.

Dzebu said although the essential services would be available, community members in Musina were urged to observe all the safety measures and adhere to the lockdown guidelines at all times. “Services that will be available at municipal offices include electricity supply, water and sanitation, cashier services, credit control, traffic and law enforcement, refuse removal, burial and cemetery services.

It is important to note that staff members who work as cashiers and burial and cemetery administrators will only work from 08:00 to 12:00 weekdays. All other services will be available at all times.”

Dzebu said although the municipality offices would be open, very strict control in terms of access by members of the public would be applied. He also emphasized some of the strict measures that the municipality has taken to combat the spread of the coronavirus.

However, I am concerned

about shutting down the Tshakhuma Community Fruit Market without compensation. Experts advised to eat fruit, therefore the Tshakhuma Market is also rendering an essential service, just like supermarkets that are selling the same fruits.

The only difference between Tshakhuma

Community Fruit Market and supermarkets is that Tshakhuma Fruit Market doesn’t sell maize meal, rice and meat. The Covid-19 lockdown forced these women to stop trading without any alternative means of income and I’m worried they won’t be able to put food on the table for their families and children

for 21 days. These women are not able to afford insurance, unlike supermarkets.

All we ask is for compensation of these women if the market cannot be opened for trading during the lockdown. Gloves and masks can be provided for the safety of the traders.

It is deeper than that as you need to set your camera to get the perfect light and also know how to focus on your object or model,” said the enthusiastic young photographer, Shonisani Ace Mukhadi, who is known for his photographic brand, BLVCK pictures.

Ace is 21 years old and hails from Tshavhalovhedzi Sendedza in the Nzhelele valley.

Ace said his photography journey started in 2017 when his older brother bought a digital camera.

“I was inspired by my brother, who taught me how to take good pictures and how to set camera functions. So far, I have already taken lots of pictures during different occasions such as parties, weddings, family gatherings, church events and photoshoots.

I am receiving positive feedback

from the community.”

He added that photography had grown in him from just being a hobby to having a passion for it. “I capture every photo with the aim of telling a story without using words.”

Ace added that in photography you must always have space for growth and learning new things.

“In future, as BLVCK pictures, we will be providing high-quality pictures and music videos and movies. We also plan to grow the business and enter the national market; we are also planning to start shooting a movie.”

Besides being a photographer, Ace is also a university student currently studying for a bachelor of language practice at the University of Venda.

He also does online marketing for different local businesses.

“Where is the gospel music legend Julius Mudau?” This is the question music lovers have been asking themselves for over 20 years. After a lengthy investigation, Limpopo Mirror tracked down Mudau, of Pile village near Tshilamba, and located him in Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape.

He has swopped the microphone for a veterinary service, but the music withdrawal pangs keep on bothering him and he has gone back to the studio, working on an album after an absence of almost 20 years from the music industry.

Mudau said music was a reliable career in the eighties because people bought cassettes, vinyl records and CDs then. “With the rise in piracy and advancement of technology, music sales decreased drastically, and I decided to venture into something to keep the wolf from the door. But all these years, I was burning within because music has been part of my life since birth,” he said.

Mudau, who released six gospel albums in the eighties, drew his singing inspiration from his sister Joyce Muleya and his brother, Norman Mudau, who encouraged him to sing in church choirs many years ago.

He converted to Christianity and was baptized in 1983. He was loved by many when he used his golden voice to praise the Lord in church. He was also adored by his peers when he led praise songs during daily school assembly prayers before classes at Rambuda High School in Dzimauli.

He studied music at Unisa and ended up teaching music, sound engineering and voice training at Matador Music School. His love of music continued, and he ended up recording his first album, Take Heed, which was received with acclaim by music lovers.

The internationally acclaimed artist Percy Mukwevho, also known as Percy the Postman, reflected after the scourge of the coronavirus in the world.

“But, as a person, to bear witness to one of the most terrifying epidemics in history is a reflection of the times at hand,” he said. “Prophecies of such disasters have been ignored over the years. Do we ignore this one as well? That said, I feel the effects of this epidemic go way deeper than the entertainment industry or any other industry, for that matter.”

He stated that he felt that the effects of COVID-19 should create a space for people to start changing the way they see the order of the world in which they are living.

“This needs to reveal to us the real problems we have as people in this world,” he said.

“What’s to happen when we are failed by the system that we felt accustomed to? Are we caring about the lives of people enough or are we putting business first in this country or even

Khathu’s voice is felt in the music industry

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Khathu Dzaga is a woman of many talents, but her strong passion finds its expression in music.

Born and raised in Thohoyandou Block G, Khathu has stolen the hearts of many people with her exceptional personality and, of course, her dulcet voice. She does not limit herself when it comes to music, so she can sing to almost every tune or beat.

“I am a songwriter and a recording vocalist,” she said. “Most of my songs are love songs because I am a woman of peace and integrity.

I believe in healing through music. So, if you ever feel like you want to listen to something you can relate to, I'm your girl.”

She had discovered her singing talent in 2008 when she used to scribble words in her notebook. She initially saw those scribblings as poetry, which she shared with friends.

“I attended a Christian school where we had scripture union Thursdays, and that's where I recited my poetry and sang some songs that I had written,” she said. “My teacher then would always ask me to stand in front and teach the others, and that was when I realised that I could actually sing!”

She turned her poems into songs that she

then performed. “Since then I started writing more and I would often gather my friends and give them little performances before school started,” she recalled. “Their reaction played a huge role in helping me believe in myself as an artist.”

She stated that music to her was a pillar of strength. “I get to express myself when I go through the different trials and tribulations in life because, honestly, this life thing is hard,” she said. “For me, music has made life more containable; music is my best friend.”

When she writes a song, she tries to accommodate everyone – young and old.

“We don't have to exclude, because love is light,” she said.

She has had her highlights in the industry, which are mostly getting recognition from established musicians who know their story in the industry.

“It's a really good feeling when legendary artists approach me intending to work with me,” said the mechanical engineer in the making. “It has made me realise that I am capable.”

Khathu's hit songs include, among others, Holding on, A thi sali, and Never give up (with Romeo). Her music is

New role for veteran presenter The veteran presenter, Executive producer and a darling to the listeners Mpho “ Jantyby” Nefale will no longer present Vhandilani Morning Drive Show which he co – hosted with Terry “The Big Dude” Mudau.

The show will now be presented by Jones “Mr Lover” Netshipise from 05:00 to 09:00, Monday to Friday. As Executive producer religion Nefale will now be focusing on his department and also producing all religious programmes. Devhula ha Vhembe will still be presented by Jantyby.

The dedicated Nefale enjoys his work so much that he has come to realise that nothing is more fulfilling than doing one’s work with love. He started his career as a radio presenter at Radio Venda in 1984. He later took up the challenge of hosting the morning drive show. Nefale will leave Vhandilani as from 1 April.

This has been a well journey travelled. He joined the station 36 years ago and was responsible for news presentation and the station’s outside broadcast shows.

When some of the staff members were retrenched in 1985, he remained behind with only 11 other presenters. Nefale was promoted to a Specialist Presenter position in 1996. Since 1984, he has been presenting different shows for Phalaphala FM. Nefale has always shown commitment to whatever show he was assigned to present. When Phalaphala FM was joined by Radio Thohoyandou in 1998, Mpho was moved from one programme to another to accommodate new staff members and listeners.

His versatility allowed him to adapt to all the shows that were allocated to him. Here are some of the programmes that he did in these 36 years on radio: morning drive, afternoon drive, early morning show, weekend evening show, Sunday morning drive show, news, current affairs, outside broadcast show and pick-a-box shows.

As a presenter, Nefale has been a recipient of many awards, namely in 1990 as most entertaining radio presenter and in 1993, 1994 and 1995 as best radio presenter and lately hall of Fame by Liberty Radio Awards. Although he has been in the industry for many years, listeners cannot seem to get enough of him since efforts to rest him have been met with resistance from the listeners.

To demonstrate that he has built an emotional bond with the station’s listeners, Nefale has been an integral part of the station’s overseas tours over the past 26 years. Listeners have insisted that Nefale be part of the tours mainly because they enjoy the way he relates to them and appreciate his humble personality and sense of humour. He has since been to different destinations with the listeners, such as Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Portuguese islands, Mauritius, etc.

He said that the feeling of knowing that thousands of people looked up to his crew show for information was priceless. He added that teamwork was very important in life. “Without teamwork, there is no productivity. The hardest part of the job is when you are chasing a deadline and your guest cancels an appointment shortly before the deadline.”

He urged the youth to be serious with their education, so that they can make a significant contribution to the community in which they live. “The youth must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life.” He also mentioned that he was hungry for success and worked hard to succeed. He has been shunting between roles and he ascribed his success to hard work, perseverance and effective time management.

Thidiela retired from football when Black Leopards gained promotion to the Absa Premiership Division in 2000 and his brother, Mr David Thidiela, took over as the chairman of the club.

The 66-year-old Thidiela is a full-time pastor of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) at the Vhufuli branch.

Mhlongo to stay put at Leopards?

According to the player’s manager, Mr Ratshibvumo Mulovhedzi of Rush Hour Sports Management, several clubs have shown interest in his services.

Mulovhedzi revealed that Black Leopards would be given preference. According to him, negotiations with Black Leopards were at an advanced stage and the deal could be sealed anytime soon. Mulovhedzi said that although his wish was to see Mhlongo in the Leopards’ outfit after the expiry of the player’s current contract with the club, the matter would

Black Leopards star Lesedi “TT” Kapinga, who is touted to join Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the soccer season, has been advised to think twice before taking the decision. Kapinga is a former player of Benny’s Care soccer Academy at Tshiozwi, an academy that produced several stars for PSL teams. His former coach at Benny’s Care, Mr Justice “Mr Producer” Matloga, said that Kapinga was talented with a huge future in football. He must, therefore, use his time and not rush for big money teams. He said Kapinga still had a chance to play for the national team and abroad.

TTM’s Musibusane Zongo in hot water for not attending training camp

Ndou revealed that the new date will be communicated to Zongo after the upliftment of the lockdown. Ndou further said that Zongo’s relationship with the club had turned bitter after their league match against Cape Umoya United at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday, 28 February.

According to Ndou, Zongo requested to stay behind after the game, saying he wanted to attend to a burning family matter and that he would report at the team’s training camp on Tuesday, 3 March.

According to Ndou, the club agreed to Zongo’s request and bought him a return-flight ticket. Instead of availing himself at the training camp on 3 March as promised, Zongo allegedly went AWOL. Ndou stated that the dribbling wizard only reported at the team’s training camp on 12 March. This after the club had tried to locate him everywhere, without success. According to Ndou, Zongo’s cellphone was not reachable at the time of his disappearance.

The 29-year-old soccer star joined Vhadau Vha Damani three months ago on a six-month contract.

Born in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape on 30 November 1990, Zongo is known for his dribbling skills on and off the pitch. He was in and out of prison on several occasions between 2012 and 2017.

Some of the teams he played for between 2008 and 2018 include SuperSport United, Vasco da Gama, Bidvest Wits, Blackburn Rovers, Chippa United, Platinum Stars, Royal Eagles and the University of Pretoria.

No truth in rumours that VFA will be buying GladAfrica franchise

By Frank Mavhungu One of the directors of the Venda Football Academy (VFA), Mr Itani Munzhelele, has dismissed the rumour that they are in the process of buying a GladAfrica Championship League franchise from TS Sporting FC as baseless.

Rumour has been flying around over the past weeks that Munzhelele and his co-director, Mr Muthanyi Robinson Ramaite, are in negotiations with the officials from TS Sporting behind closed doors.

Munzhelele said that while they wanted to see VFA campaigning at a professional level in the near future, the rumour that they were about to seal a deal with the Nelspruit-based National First Division side was false. Munzhelele confirmed that a lot of people had asked him about that before and that he had told them that the story contained no element of truth.

Munzhelele further revealed that what he had learnt over the past weeks was that his team’s fans want the team to be campaigning in the higher division. He again stated that when he had returned to football three years before, his wish was to own a professional team within a space of five years.

After vanishing from football for several years, Munzhelele, or Vhanzheli as he is affectionately called, established a soccer club called Mudagasini FC. The club campaigned under the Thulamela Local Football Association for one season. Munzhelele bought the SAB League franchise early last season and renamed the club Dipeni FC. Dipeni FC campaigned in Stream I of the MMK Administrators League and finished their league programme on top of the log. The team represented the stream in the promotional playoffs, but they failed to make the grade.

Although Mr Munzhelele did not want to commit himself regarding the matter, Limpopo Mirror had it from reliable sources that chances are good for the Vhembe district to have another Gladafrica club come next season.

Bright future awaits referee

At the age of 12, the future of a young female football referee, Ndofhiwa Pretty Makena, looks bright.

Born at Tshakhuma village on 10 April 2007, the diminutive ref revealed that her desire to follow refereeing as a career started when she was a Grade 6 pupil at Mmboswobeni Primary School. According to her, nothing could stop her from watching soccer games on television.

Although she had the desire to become a professional football player one day, her primary focus was on the referees when she watched games on television. She was prompted to approach her teacher, Mr Nkhumiseni Nyambeni, to guide her on refereeing.

Nyambeni is the current referee selector for the SAB and the ABC Motsepe Leagues.

Realizing that Ndofhiwa had talent, Nyambeni advised her to attend training sessions and workshops as the starting point. Ndofhiwa commenced her career as an assistant referee in the MMK Administrators League matches in the 2018/19 soccer season. She praised the players and officials of the various teams for the role they played towards the success of her career.

According to her, the players and officials gave her the necessary advice and guidance when she committed mistakes, even at times when her mistakes would cost their teams valuable points.

Ndofhiwa, a Grade 8 pupil at Lwamondo High School, stated that she had never received any threat in her life as a referee. When asked as to where she wanted to see herself in five years’ time, Ndofhiwa said that her dream was to officiate at international level soon. She cited three local professional referees, Messrs Olani Kwinda, Jelly Chabani and Khamusi Razwimisani, as her role models.

She wants to follow chemical engineering as a career after passing Grade 12.
