Life sentences for mob justice gang from Tshivhilwi village

By Silas Nduvheni The Thohoyandou High Court sent a strong message to groups who believe that mob justice is the answer to curbing crime in communities. On Tuesday, nine residents of Tshivhilwi village were sent to life imprisonment after being found guilty on charges of murder and kidnapping.

The incident happened on 24 February 2014. At the time, the accused were all members of the local Community Policing Forum (CPF). During the court case, testimony was given that the group of men went out to search for a suspect or suspects responsible for the theft of, among other things, a cellphone.

State witnesses testified that the group found Vhonani Sabara, whom they accused of being in possession of a stolen cellphone. He was tied up and severely assaulted. The group then went in search of whom they believed was another sus-

pect. Shortly afterwards, they confronted Thanziela Mailanombe. He was also severely assaulted and dragged along but was later released.

The group then took the badly injured Sabara to the local headman’s kraal. At that stage, his clothes were torn, and he was unable to talk. Sabara later died from the injuries sustained, which included injuries to his chest and head. The men used sjamboks and hosepipes to assault their victim and kicked him.

Following the incident, 12 people were arrested, of which one turned state witness. What did NERSA find?

charges bulk consumers for electricity. Municipalities that act as electricity re-sellers all have their own rate systems in place, and even though the tariffs correspond to some degree with what Eskom charges, some deviations occur.

The landlord involved in

the dispute in Louis Trichardt purchases electricity from Makhado Municipality in the “Industrial Low Tariffs (Urban and Peri-Urban)” category. This specific category of user pays for three components of electricity, namely a basic charge, an energy charge and a demand charge.

The 2021/22 charge for energy in this category is R1,2247 per kWh. The basic charge (Industrial Low Tariff ) would add another R1 129,39 to the bill. The demand charge, however, is the problematic one.

This gets charged at R305,81

per kVA. NERSA’s finding was that the tenants should just have been charged an Urban and Peri-urban Tariff (Small Business Conventional), because had they each dealt with the municipality directly, this would have been the case. The tariffs would have been R1,8549 per kWh and the basic charge of R715,22 would have had to be shared among the tenants.

The tenants could also have been converted to a Commercial Pre-paid (Small Business) scale, which would have meant that a single energy tariff of R2,7107 would have been applicable.

demand peaked at 25 kVA at any time during the month, the cost on that item would be R7 739,75.

It would also not be as simple as saying that this amount should be divided by the 16 tenants. Some of them may be very “light” users and others may use more. Even if the electricity meters at every tenant’s unit could record the demand, this would still not be a solution, simply because demand is calculated on the combined peak.

If, for example, three tenants use a welder for some work at their premises, this will

influence the costs. An average welding machine uses between 7-12 kWh. If the tenants use the welding machines at different times, the demand will stay below roughly 10 kWh. If they use them simultaneously, the demand will jump to 30 kWh (adding R9 287,70 to the landlord’s bill).

This is also a problem that is exacerbated by what is described as a “skewed” system being implemented by the Makhado Municipality. The controversial demand charges may have started off as a good idea, but after a decade or two, with regular increases, they became skewed. A comparison

with neighbouring towns shows this clearly.

Had the same landlord owned a building in Tzaneen, the situation would have been a lot different. He could have opted for Tariff B, with a threephase connection not exceeding 75 kVA. The top-of-the-range connection would be one of 75 kVA, with a monthly cost of R3 522,34. The unit cost would be R1,7167 per kWh. In Tzaneen, he could also have opted for a higher-capacity consumption, with a minimum demand of 100 kVA. The fixed monthly charge would be R3 632,06 with a consumption charge of (maximum) R1,3488 per kWh. Some seasonal charges are applicable as well as some discounts on this tariff scale.

If the landlord were situated in Tzaneen, calculating and dividing the fixed costs among the tenants would have been much simpler. No “surprises” would have surfaced as is the case in Louis Trichardt.

Do not even consider re-selling electricity We spoke to a very experienced electrical engineer from Louis Trichardt, Mr André Slabbert, and asked him about the inconsistencies. He agreed that the way the Makhado Municipality is treating bulk users of electricity is totally skewed.

Slabbert explained that with any electrical connection larger than 50kVA, customers are forced into a bulk-connection configuration where the customer is billed for both demand (kVA rate) and energy (kWh units). “There is no alternative for customers requiring above

50kVA connection capacity,” he said.

Slabbert said that he strongly advised his clients to try and avoid reselling electricity because this only caused tremendous problems. The best option is to let the tenants deal directly with the municipality and have prepaid meters installed. “Unfortunately, Makhado Municipality does not provide pre-paid metering on any three-phase connections,” he said.

He reckons the Makhado Municipality’s tariff structure will become more and more problematic and unmanageable. The reason for this is probably seated in a practice that started a few decades ago when the demand component was introduced. Every year, this component increases in line with the annual increases, which also means that the relative “weight” of the expense increases exponentially.

Slabbert reckons the Makhado Municipality should have its present electricity tariff structures investigated and re-calculated from scratch to get a new basic structure and rates and possibly introduce a tariff structure for medium-sized (51–100kVA) electricity connections.

Questions were sent to the Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi. He was asked to respond in time for this week’s edition but could not do so. allegedly stopped buses from using certain routes. Taxi operators apparently needed to increase fares, but this did not go down well with passengers.

The spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Mr Mike Maringa, said on Wednesday that the department was aware of the tension on the Dzanani routes. Official from the department were sent to try and resolve the dispute in the area.

The taxi and bus operators apparently reached an agreement, and the conflict was resolved.

Maringa said that no-one was allowed to close off roads.

The department is also monitoring the permits for both taxis and buses. He advised all stake holders to involve the department first when any concerns arise.

As far as the conflict between the Tshitale Taxi Association and the Phadziri bus company is concerned, Maringa said that they were yet to receive a report on this. They will investigate and engage with the Makhado Municipality.

The police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the police were monitoring the situation. He also said that no-one was allowed to simply close off a public road.

Man sentenced to a life in prison for raping 13-year-old girl

By Silas Nduvheni Rialivhuwa Emmanuel Lurale (35) from Lwamondo village outside Thohoyandou was sentenced to life imprisonment in the Sibasa Regional Court on Monday (31st) for the rape of a minor.

The victim (who cannot be named to protect her identity), was only 13 years old at the time of the incident. She told the court that she had encountered Lurale, whom she knew well as he was her stepfather, in December of 2015 while she and her friend were walking back home from the village’s spaza shop. Lurale, who no longer lived with the girl’s mother, approached them and promised to buy her (the victim) Christmas clothes, so she left with him. He took her to his village, where he locked her inside his shack for three days and repeatedly raped her.

Lurale was arrested after

the friend went to the girl’s mother and told her that her daughter had been taken by her stepfather. The matter was reported to the police, who rescued the child at Lurale’s shack. Lurale pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The spokesperson for the Limpopo Division of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, said that the State, represented by Advocate Rabelani Mutsinda Makhera, had had to prove the case to link the accused (Lurale) to the offence, as no DNA had been available. The J88 (medical report) was submitted to corroborate the evidence of the forensic nurse who testified on the injuries the victim had sustained during the ordeal. The Victim Impact Report of the victim and her mother were also submitted during sentencing, which was prepared by probation officer Lindelani Mukwevho.

“During the trial, the victim (who is now 22 years old) told the court that she was traumatised after the incident.

She became argumentative and experienced nightmares.

Her mother also testified that she spent sleepless nights as her daughter cried a lot after the incident and failed her grades at school. She became absent-minded and sought counselling from the Thuthuzela Care Centre, where social workers and psychologists helped her quite a lot and her performance also improved at school,” said Malabi-Dzhangi.

The pre-sentence report for the accused was also read to the court and handed in as an exhibit. The probation officer, Mpho Matodzi, recommended that the accused be sentenced to life imprisonment. The presiding officer, Mr Maruping Mabitsela, agreed with the State and sentenced the accused to life imprisonment for rape.

Residents of Musina are not too impressed with the local municipality’s practice of cutting off the electricity supply when consumers fall in arrears with their water bills. This is despite the residents’ paying for their pre-paid electricity.

Residents who spoke to Limpopo Mirror complained that the municipality does not seem to respect their rights in this regard. When they fall in arrears with their water bills, the municipality responds by cutting off their electricity.

Because water is a basic human right, the municipality is not allowed to cut the supply. According to the National Water Act, a minimum quantity of potable water of 25 litres per person per day, or six kilolitres per household per month, must be provided to residents, irrespective of the state of their account.

However, the law does seem to allow municipalities to disconnect electricity if the water account and other charges levied on the property have not been paid.

“According to the council policy on credit control and debt collection, the municipality is allowed to cut off municipal services if a consumer is in arrears and no payment arrangement has been made with the municipality,” said

Some residents were also concerned that the electricity is being cut off even when legitimate disputes concerning the water bills exist. “I don’t understand why the municipality continues to cut off my electricity. I pay my water bill every month,” said Tshieisi Sitelela (80) from Nancefield.

He explained that, in 2017, the municipality sent him a

R3 000 bill. “I paid for it all.

On December 6 last year, I paid my water bill, but I was surprised when they cut the electricity off again before the end of the month. Now my water bill is suddenly in arrears. This is corruption. I am not going to pay the R11 000 water bill the municipality sent me,” he said.

Mr Enos Mulovhedzi, representative of the workers’ union, the National Transport Movement (NTM), said that despite the low turnout of people taking part in the protest action, they would continue with the strike until their demands were met. The workers’ demands include negotiations around their working hours and leave days, incentive bonuses, UIF and annual salary adjustments.

Dressed in their work uniforms, the chanting workers insisted they get paid their annual incentive bonuses, which they say had always been paid to them in previous years without fail, until now. They also claim that Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) deductions were not being paid over, even though the money was deducted from their salaries every month, and that the management expected them to work without sufficient PPE supplies, as per the Covid-19 health regulations.

Mulovhedzi said that, despite the weakened economy because of the Covid pandemic, the company had had a good financial year.

“The company has done well under the circumstances. It made good money; now it is time for us to be compensated. There is no rationale for those incentive bonuses to not be paid - that is why we are having this strike,” he said.

Fruit & Veg City’s manager, Mr Niekie Dercksen, firmly denied the allegations that the employees’ UIF deductions were not getting paid over. He also denied the allegations that employees did not have sufficient PPE to wear during working hours.

Dercksen said they could not meet the workers’ demands of a 12% salary increase, travel allowances, a 12% employer contribution to their provident fund and a 13th cheque. “The business just cannot afford to pay bonuses at this time.

We held a meeting with the workers and union in June last year (2021) where we explained our financial situation to them. The company is running at a loss. We even showed them the financial statements when they went to the CCMA. They can strike all they want, but it won’t change the fact that there isn’t money to pay incentive bonuses,” he said.

In the meantime, the work is being distributed between the remaining seven workers who chose not to take part in the strike and the management itself. “Another employee, who was being intimidated by the strikers, decided to stay at home for the time being because he was too afraid to come to work, but we are doing our best to keep the business running,” Dercksen said.

By Bernard Chiguvare Traveling along the N1 road in Limpopo seems to be getting more dangerous by the day as the road produces more and more road carnage. Over the past few weeks, this notorious road has claimed several lives, but most of the accidents can be ascribed to driver error.

“We all shoulder the responsibility to ensure that our behaviour saves life and limb on our roads, and we become our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers,” said Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula when he released the 2021 festive season fatality statistics at Grasmere Toll Plaza on 18 January this year.

His words, however, seems to have fallen on deaf ears. On 21 January – only three days after

Mbalula’s speech - the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety announced two fatal accidents on the N1 South outside Musina, where six people died and 14 ended up with serious injuries. On 23 January, another driver died on the N1 North, near Mampakuil weighbridge, while four more people were killed - two on the N1 near Modimolle and two on the N1 South in the Waterberg District.

All of these accidents involved speeding and reckless and negligent driving.

Mike Maringa, spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, said the department was going to increase visibility on the roads in an attempt to reduce fatalities on the N1, and warned that they will be harsh on transgressors.

As a way of re-uniting the family members of Muntswu in Ha-Manavhela village in the Vuwani area, a new tombstone was erected for the late Charles Rambuwani Muntswu, a well-known cattle farmer, who died in 1993. “Some of his children and grandchildren were not working at the time of his death and his grave was old and dilapidated, so we decided to recognise his contributions to the family and community at large by erecting a new tombstone at his grave,” said one of the grandchildren, Manuel Muntswu. The preparations started on 25 December 2021, and on Saturday, 29 January, family and community members gathered in large numbers to pay tribute to him. Musanda Vho-Rambuda said that government leaders who took the time to listen to

traditional leaders and ordinary community members were a blessing to the country’s democracy. “We understand that our government has achieved a lot since we attained democracy in 1994, but there is still much to be done. All these challenges, however, can never be resolved in one day. Meeting with government leaders and community structures is the only way to speed up service delivery in our villages.”

He added that he and his subjects were thankful for everything the government had done for them over the past years. “However, there are many people who still need houses and electricity, especially in our new residential area.

We have a lot of unemployed

people, and we should also address the issue of crime,” he said.

Headman Malise appealed to the municipality to fix internal streets in his village. “We also have a new residential area, which is an extension of the current Domboni, where we request the municipality to help us with water supply, electricity and demarcation of the business area.”

In response, Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela said the municipality would continue to work with traditional leaders and various community stakeholders to enhance service delivery. “We have noted all the challenges raised here today, and we will find a better way to address them,” he said.

Ndiimiseni Munyai (29), more commonly known as DJ Vhangani Muimbi wa Mapiano from the Tshaulu-Tshilaphala area, says that for the fans to really enjoy his talent is very important to him.

The Amapiano musician, who finds his joy in singing, recalls that music had always been a dominant part of his life. “I used to sing a lot when I was young because that’s what I enjoy most. I was part of the school and church choirs as a young boy,” he said. Today, his mixes get played on national, community and commercial radio stations.

His solo journey in the music industry only started in 2018. “It was really hard at first, especially when you don’t have a manager or someone to help you. Being from a rural area comes with challenges of its own, as most people still do not believe that rural artists can be good musicians too. I suppose it has to do with the fact that more artists are from Gauteng and other provinces. So, being a local artist is a bit challenging because people don’t take you as seriously,” he said.

“I tried to find a good producer, without luck, until late 2021 when I started to do Amapiano songs.”

That was when fellow artist Aka Flow Mpoza Mudau finally stepped in to help produce and record DJ Vhangani’s first album, Vhopholisa, which was released in November last year. The album contains eight foot-stomping tunes, such as Dobo Dobo, Vhabebi, Vhamukethwa and Duvhalauthoma.

“Any young man who wants to see himself as a musician one day must be really passionate about the field, like a duck taking to water,” he said.

Fans can dust off their dancing shoes because DJ Munei Netshiozwi, famously known as Givergivero in the entertainment world, has released his long-awaited extended play (EP) album, Just Believe.

Givergivero is a prolific DJ with a huge fan base. Born and bred at Tshitereke village near Donald Fraser Hospital, he is a true example of how hard work, perseverance and dedication can lead to great success. An IT graduate from Boston Media House, Givergivero had played an integral part in the South African entertainment industry over the years, delivering high-profile performances across the country. His music enjoys fair airplay on nearly every national and regional radio station in the country.

Given his background, to see him making waves wherever he goes is not all that surprising.

Givergivero grew up in a musical family, where his elder brother inculcated his love of music.

“My elder brother would play music all day long over weekends and that was where I fell in love with it. When he was not there, I would operate his sound system, and the rest is history.”

Mercy back with new album

By Frank Mavhungu After disappearing from music circles for about two years, wellknown local artist Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila made a comeback last week. Her brand-new album, Tshihwilili tshanga, was released last Wednesday.

The album was recorded at the Winman Recoding Studios in Sibasa towards the end of last year. Tshihwilili tshanga is a Venda disco album containing four tracks, with Tshihwilili tshanga as the title song. The other three songs are Shango lashu, Farela and Lili nwananwananga.

Madzivhandila’s music career dates back about three decades. Like many artists, her love of music became clear

when she was a Sunday-school child.

She later joined the ICC Ministry Band under the leadership of Apostle Maxwell Masakona. The band released two albums with Madzivhandila as a leading vocalist in most of the songs.

In her music career, Madzivhandila has accompanied several musicians, including Naledzani Netshirembe, Mbilu Rapson Rambuwani, Itani Madima and Lufuno Dagada, in recording their albums. After realizing that she was mature enough to stand on her own, Madzivhandila went solo in 1997. Her debut album as a soloist, Yesu wa vhuthu, was released the following year. Yesu wa vhuthu was a huge success and releasing her second and third albums, Haho and Haho 2

in 2003 and 2005 respectively, was easy for her.

Her fourth album, Dzina lawe, followed in 2009. Dzina lawe was followed by Hashanduki in 2015. Her first Tshivenda traditional album, A ri edeli, followed suit in August 2019.

In 2020, Madzivhandila became one of the artists who decided to combat the coronavirus through music. She released a single song, Ndi lamulelwa nga nnyi, which translates into Who will come to my rescue.

Nemadondoni, affectionately called Dons, hails from the rural village of Dzwerani. He says he always yearned to be a radio presenter. “I fell in love with radio at a very young age, and pursuing this dream is the best career choice I could have made.

I joined Makhado FM because it gives me the opportunity to expose my talent to a bigger audience,” he said.

He completed his primary schooling at Dzwerani and proceeded to Ndaedzo Secondary School, where he matriculated.

I set realistic goals for myself and strive to achieve them without failure. I have learnt to believe in myself and to always learn from my past mistakes,” he said.

Taylor’s dream grows into reality

By Bernard Chiguvare Taylor Netshivhale devotes her time to writing books and composing songs, which she considers her lifeline when things become too much for her.

Taylor hails from Tshifulanani village. “When I was nine years old, I fell in love with writing poetry. Later, it evolved and at the age of 16, I started to write novels. My first poem was about the resilience to the Apartheid government, displayed by former president Nelson Mandela,” she recalled.

Her parents are both singers.

After reading Taylor’s first poem,

her father suggested she turn it into a song while he played the guitar in accompaniment. “This is how I discovered my singing talent and decided to make it one of my life careers,” she said.

In 2016, Taylor managed to record her debut single, Always love you. “I recorded the song at a small studio in our area. The studio does not exist anymore, but they were very grateful for the chance to record my first single then.”

Taylor’s life has been rough at times. When her father became ill, she had to sell traditional beer for a living, which landed her in trouble with the law. Fortunately,

she was not arrested, but this difficult time was what led her into composing songs with healing messages. “At this point I decided to focus full time on singing and writing novels,” she said. Among the books she authored are The Reality and Just a Little Prayer – which deals with the issue of the abuse of women by others in power.

Although Taylor admires her singing parents, she is also inspired by musicians such as Makhadzi and Kelly Khumalo.

Phalaphala FM and Munghana Lonene celebrate 57 years SABC radio stations Phalaphala FM and Munghana Lonene FM celebrated their joint 57th year on air on Tuesday (1 February). The occasion was celebrated with broadcasting sessions from Elim Mall and the Protea Glen Mall in Gauteng.

The two stations simultaneously started broadcasting in Tshivenda and Xitsonga in 1965 as the then Radio Venda and Radio Tsonga, sharing the studio in Auckland Park.

On Tuesday, the stations broadcast the Dziaorowa and Khoma Ndlela shows respectively from 15:00 to 18:00. Presenters Shandu Lukhwareni from Phalaphala FM and Ike Ngobeni from Munghana Lonene FM were in action at Elim Mall, while Tico Liphadzi from Phalaphala FM and Lindiwe Makhubele from Munghana Lonene FM broadcast the show from the Protea Glen Mall.

Ms Sharon Ravele, Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, said the staff members of the station became very excited when they looked back on where they had come from. “Today we continue to contribute to and have a positive impact on the different communities.”

She emphasised the good relationship they have built with their listeners over the years.

“We have made it easier for them to connect us, unlike back in the days when they had to write letters to reach us. We also have social-media platforms that show our activities and events,” she said. “We are proud of our listeners, as they continue to support our station and participate daily in our shows, including our events.”

Ravele said the aim of the station was to educate, preserve, promote and protect the Tshivenda culture and customs. “We will try and visit as many parts as possible of our listeners’ footprints in order to be closer to them, because we love them.”

Tshimbupfe’s bright young scientist wants to tackle the world’s challenges

The team at Boxer Shayandima have been hard at work assisting the community within which they trade, with much-needed food relief. After recently identifying two schools in need of immediate help, hamper packs were created and delivered to the doors of the worthy organisations. The Shayandima Community Crèche and Tshilidzini Special Needs School received big donations of food to support the school’s children, caretakers and teachers for many weeks to come. “Over the past 45 years, Boxer has shown South Africa that we are the community champions. We realised that these two places of learning were in desperate need of assistance to ensure that everyone had food to eat when they were at school, so we stepped in. Boxer is proud to continue serving the communities of Shayandima,” said Boxer Shayandima Branch Manager Sipho Mkhize. “Dreams can always be achieved if one does not lose focus,” says Dr Elelwani Ramulifho from Malonga village in Tshimbupfe, who managed to fulfil her own dreams by obtaining her PhD in biotechnology from Wits University at the age of 30.

Ramulifho (31) is the youngest of eight children. Her devoted parents, who had always advocated education although they themselves had never had the opportunity to study, supported her right through her education. Thanks to them, she could complete her BSc degree in biotechnology with the University of Pretoria (UP) in 2013. She completed her postgraduate studies in BSc (Honours) in biotechnology at the same institution.

From the study field she chose, Ramulifho clearly has her country at heart. “The reason I chose this field of study was because I wanted to contribute to the fight for food security by producing crop varieties that can withstand and thrive under severe unfavourable environmental conditions brought about by climate change,” she said.

Her research looked at the way in which crops and pathogens interacted. According to her, this particular research could provide answers to climate-change challenges and food production in South Africa. Dr Ramulifho’s thesis focused on plant viruses, and she looked at crops that manage to survive even when infected with a virus.

“For me, education is the liberation of the mind; the ability to think independently, critically and innovatively. South Africa needs bright and free minds that will not agree with the status quo but explore innovate ways that will improve and build a country,” she said.

Musina mayor hands over new mobile testing centre and upgraded Harper Sports Centre

On 26 and 27 January, Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela handed over several completed projects to the community.

The projects included a new mobile vehicle testing centre and the upgrading of the Harper Sports Centre.

One of the recently completed projects is the two-kilometre road through Nancefield Extension 9 and 10. The stretch of road was paved and fitted with speed humps, road signs and road markings. The total cost was R12.7 million.

The Harper Sports Centre was upgraded with facilities such as a rugby field, children’s playground, outdoor gym, and a high-mast light – all to

the cost of R5 million. Nancefield also received a brand-new multi-purpose centre – worth R12.17 million. The centre boasts an indoor sports arena, combi courts, a boardroom, a youth centre, a disability centre and a parking area and steel palisade fence.

A mobile vehicle-testing truck for the Limpopo traffic police worth R5 million was also acquired and handed over to the municipality by the Road Traffic Management Corporation.

The community, however, was not fully satisfied with all the projects, arguing that the Harper Sports Centre was not complete. “The soccer field is not finished. The municipality only put goal posts up while there is no lawn at all.

service delivery,” said Theodore Maoko, a sporting guru in Musina. According to him, the municipality started the stadium about 10 years ago but failed to complete it because the ground was so rocky. The community wants to know what the municipality has done about the surface.

To this Mayor Mawela replied that everything had been completed, but that the community itself had vandalised some of the projects. “There is no way that we would hand over unfinished projects. Some of the projects were vandalised by some of the community members. The handing over of the projects, especially the Harper Stadium, was to stop the community from vandalising the stadium,” he said.

Efforts put in place by law-enforcement agencies to fight crime and corruption at Beitbridge Border Post seem to be yielding some results. On 26 January, members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit apprehended two security officers, Tshilidzi Samuel Masutha (35) and Ronewa Makhovha (31), who were stationed at the border post, for alleged corruption, theft of a motor vehicle, contravention of Section 88 of the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1974 and defeating the ends of justice.

The allegations date back to 18 December last year when the two security officers allegedly connived with Kholisani Nkomo, an international Zimbabwean truck driver, who was stopped at the port of entry’s search point by officials of the South African Revenue Service (SARS). The truck, which raised suspicions, was impounded for a mandatory search, but the driver allegedly promised the officers gratification for the release of the truck.

According to a media release made by the Hawks, one of the security officers allegedly tried to persuade the SARS officials, who were still in the process of impounding the truck, into accepting Nkomo’s bribe, but they refused.

The truck was finally impounded and kept under the watch of another security guard, who allegedly abandoned his post, during which time the truck disappeared. SARS suspected the truck to be carrying illegal goods but was gone before they could thoroughly search it.

The Hawks, in conjunction with the SARS Anti-Corruption unit, instituted an investigation, and warrants of arrest were authorised against the suspects.

As part of their preparations for the resumption of the league programme, Black Leopards have strengthened their ailing squad by acquiring the services of new six players.

According to the club’s communications manager, Mr Divhambele Mbalavhali, the six players who will be in the Leopards’ colours until the end of the current season are Ivan Mahangwahaya, Amukelani Chauke, Maboke Matlakala, Matimu Tshabalala, Shanisani Mchivu and Mulisa Ramusia.

Mahangwahaya is not a new face in the Leopards’ camp. He played for the Thohoyandou side before their promotion to the DStv Premiership Division in the 2018/19 soccer season. He left Lidoda duvha for Bidvest Wits, where he stayed for one season. He later migrated to Polokwane City in search of greener pastures.

Mulisa Ramusia is from the amateur side Madridtas FC. The same applies to Shanisani Mchivu, who was playing for the MMK Administrators League side United Artists FC. Mbalavhali said that Matlakala had joined the Thohoyandou side on a five-month loan from the DStv Premiership side, Marumo Gallants FC. Ha-Masia Kurhuleni managed to beat ItuMagagane was clearly too strong for Tsholo, as he dropped him with vicious combinations three times in round three and once in round five, before the referee eventually came to Tsholo’s rescue.

Magagane dominated four of the five rounds, although Tsholo gave him some memorable punches that left him with an open wound above his left eye. The fight, which was scheduled over eight rounds, ended in the fifth round as Tsholo did not respond to the bell signalling the start of the next round.

Mulovhedzi approached the fight aggressively, throwing killer punches from all angles.

This resulted in Tsholo’s falling down in the second round. Magagane, however, had to dig deep to cause Tsholo to taste his first defeat.

“My intention was to hurt Tsholo badly and end his career, because he humiliated me before our fight, calling me an amateur,” said Magagane after the fight.

A free soccer lesson for the Univen students

By Frank Mavhungu Manamani City FC gave Univen FC a free soccer lesson when they crushed them 3-1 in their MMK Administrators League match played at the Univen Stadium on Sunday.

The first half of the match was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. The hosts threatened to score in the eighth minute. Their centre forward, Rocky Nyalungu, received a neat pass from John Ndaka and shot wide from the edge of the box.

The visitors from Manamani village knocked on the opposition’s door three minutes afterwards.

Their bulldozer strike, Malamba Themeli, tried his luck with a half volley from the 25-metre area. The ball missed the target by inches.

The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for the half-time break.

City strengthened their strik-

ing force by introducing Winston Chauke for Rendani Nemushungwa two minutes into the last half. The replacement proved to be a clever move on the part of the team’s technical staff. PSL senior official Ronnie Schloss interacted with Black Leopards officials and representatives of the Collins Chabane Municipality during the final assessment of the Malamulele and Saselamani Stadium.

Earlier this week, Leopard’s spokesperson, Divhambele Mbalavhali, said that they were anticipating a positive report from the PSL. He was optimistic that Leopards would soon start playing matches at Saselamani.

Collins Chabane municipality’s spokesperson, Robert Mathye, said that they had tried by all means to revamp the stadium to enable it to host PSL games. “We have tried to resolve the outstanding issues since we have been given the instruction by the PSL, but we hope that when the league activities resume, the matches will be played here at Saselamani stadium,” he said.

Mathye said that the stadium could comfortably accommodate 15 000 people. A new pavilion was recently completed at the stadium.

The first home match of the year for Leopards will be against Cape Town All Stars on 23 February.
