“Daar was klomp mense daar gewees.

Dit was so onnodig.
The Limpopo police refused to respond to enquiries this week about the fatal police shooting on Sunday morning that left one man dead in Louis Trichardt. The man was shot dead and three others were arrested, following a shootout between the suspects and the Makhado police at the corner of Rissik and Klein Street near Bridge Auto. In the absence of an official police statement, the shootout is said to have taken place around 11:00 when the police apparently confronted a highly sought-after suspect. The situation quickly escalated, however, and a shootout ensued during which the suspect was killed. The three men who were accompanying the suspect were arrested at the scene. Shortly after the incident, rumours started circulating on social media that the suspect shot dead could be linked to a spate
of violent crimes in the Musina area. Since the fatal shooting, this newspaper has tried in vain to elicit a response from provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo regarding the incident. The only response the newspaper received came in the form of a WhatsApp message from Mojapelo around 19:00 on Tuesday, merely stating: “The case has been handed over to the IPID.” The newspaper has since escalated its enquiry to the national office of the IPID. The office’s spokesperson, Ms Ndileka Cola, responded on Wednesday by stating that she was still waiting for confirmation of the incident. At the time of our going to press, the circumstances surrounding the event and the name and age of the deceased remain unknown. What had happened to the other three men arrested on the scene could not be determined either.

This is still very far from the peak of 2 147 cases recorded on 13 January this year. What must, however, be remembered is that the number took just more than a month from mid-December (on 10 December 65 active cases existed) to rise to this peak in January. Currently, the municipality in the Vhembe area with the most active cases is Makhado (18). Thulamela is not far behind with 15 cases, with Musina (13) and Collins Chabane (4) following. Makhado is also the municipality that has recorded the most Covid-19 deaths, namely 220. In Thulamela, 179 Covid-19 deaths were thus far recorded, at Collins Chabane 70 people died and in Musina the Covid-19 death toll stood at 21. In the whole of Vhembe, the total number of people who have been infected with the virus stood at 11 814 on Tuesday (1st). The cumulative total in the province was 65 326. Zoutpansberger
Raleshuku se direkte telefoonnommer is 082 043 5750.
Foto verskaf.
DWS condemns closure of water infrastructure by angry protestors Municipal News The Department of Water and Sanitation in Limpopo has condemned the closure of the Nandoni Water Treatment Plan by protesting residents of the villages of Tshiulungoma and Muloti earlier this week. In a press statement issued by the department, it states that the protestors overpowered the security personnel guarding the plant, took the keys and locked it. “This will have far-reaching implications as it has affected water supply to communities that are benefiting from the plant,” reads the statement. According to Water and Sanitation Provincial Head Ms Lucy Kobe, these acts of criminality have no place in Limpopo and whatever issues community members feel aggrieved by, they should not lead to the shutdown of the plant. “We fully understand that people have a constitutional right to protest, however, no one has a right to infringe on someone else’s right to have access to water. The protestors also endangered the lives of the people guarding the plant, something that is against the law as well and we condemn that,” she emphasises in the statement. Kobe says the national government is aware of the water challenges experienced in the area and adds that they are working closely with the provincial and local governments to come up with immediate solutions. She indicates that part of the problem has been the non-functional pump station pumping water from Tshiulungoma to Mutoti village. The pump station has since been fixed, but it cannot be tested now since the plant is closed. “The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) strongly condemns the acts of shutting down of water infrastructure in the strongest possible terms. Such conduct has negative implications on service delivery, compliance of municipalities and water wastage which cannot
be afforded in the midst of unreliable rainfall,” the statement reads.
- Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)

Crime creeps ever closer as streets become darker and help get it under control … It is inconceivable that the local municipality has so little regard for the community’s safety by playing blind and deaf to everything that demands an effort on their part. Being understaffed is not an acceptable excuse anymore, after so many years, as to why the community must continue to ‘be patient with them’ and endure being subjected to crime.” Some of the community’s questions were presented to the municipality for
answers, namely why the municipality does not maintain the streetlights and check that all are in working order on a regular basis; how many municipal technicians are currently deployed for maintaining the town’s streetlights; why the electrical department – which has such a crucial function regarding service delivery to the community – is still not efficiently staffed with permanent technicians for the workload required to maintain the town’s streetlights; wheth-
er extra workers have been appointed and whether they had started repairing the streetlights; and the reason for starting with these repairs in the main streets, instead of the residential areas, where 90% of the grievances about streetlights come from? Makhado municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi gave their vague reply (as on 25 May): “We are currently assessing them and in the next two weeks we will have attended and fixed everything.”
Numerous streetlights in the Old Town residential area have not shed any light for years now, while many properties are left in dark shadows at night, exposed to criminal activity.
SANRAL bursary and scholarship opportunity Education The South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) launched its bursary and scholarship programme with applications opening to learners across the country on 1 June. SANRAL’s scholarship programme was historically developed to give financial support to learners from Grades 10 to 12, ideally those who excel in mathematics and science. This year, scholarships are available to all high school learners (from Grade 8 to Grade 12), irrespective of their subject choices. Furthermore, where learners previously required a 70% overall aggregate to be eligible for consideration, they now require 60% with a view to improving their aggregate to 70%. The scholarships will cover school fees, books and prescribed stationery, winter and summer uniforms, hostel accommodation (where applicable) and extra tuition classes in support of improved grades. The bursary programme, which formerly focussed purely on funding engineering studies, is now within reach of students pursuing an array of tertiary qualifications at public universities across the country. In a holistic business environment, the auxiliary line functions that support SANRAL’s engineering function are as crucial and, as such, funding will be available to full-time students studying law, public administration, finance, and human resources, among other fields. Matriculants will need a 70%
overall pass, while existing students will require 60% to be eligible for a SANRAL bursary. The bursaries will cover tuition and registration, books and equipment, compulsory excursions
and seminars, accommodation and meals and a living allowance Applications are available from the SANRAL website at https:// www.nra.co.za until 30 September this year.

What happened before? Our main character is Rosalyn, a young lady growing up in a somewhat dysfunctional family. Her grandfather, Brian, mysteriously disappeared a year before. He was an eccentric character who loved to fiddle around in his laboratory. While wandering around her grandfather’s house, Rosalyn discovers two old valve radios. A voice suddenly emerges from one of the radios. The voice turns out to be that of her granddad, asking her to help find him. The voice disappears, leaving Rosalyn to search for more clues in his study. Inside one of the books on his shelves she finds two old, hand-drawn maps with clues. One of them has the word “El Dorado” discernible. The rest of the map is covered in ancient symbols and dialect. Rosalyn then finds an interesting clue. The necklace her granddad had given her for her 16th birthday suddenly starts to glow. The writing on
the necklace matches that of the book. The proximity of the necklace causes the writing on the book to shine. The shadow of a figure outside the house causes Rosalyn to flee her grandfather’s house. She grabs the book and maps and makes for the garage, where she gets away in his old car. She drives to a plot just outside town where her granddad had built her a treehouse. She spends the night up in the treehouse, with the maps spread out around her. The next morning, she awakes with the sound of a car. It looks like her mother’s car. Rosalyn’s necklace then starts to itch. She places it on the map, causing the markers to swirl around like magical fireflies. She realised that the markers formed a pattern, that of Orion’s belt. The book, pieced together with the maps, creates constellations. When she climbs out of the treehouse she gets confronted by a tall dark man. “You are the missing piece. I was sent by the chief to return you with the golden mortar to El Dorado,” he tells her. The man has a golden necklace, similar to that of Rosalyn. The neck-
lace starts tugging the man towards the treehouse where Rosalyn had left the book and maps. Tinashe, the stranger, places his own necklace on the depression in the book cover and it starts to glow, but Rosalyn grabs the book with the map and holds it next to her heart. In a flash she gets teleported to a grassland, with large rectangular boulders around her. It reminds her of Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. She notices a doorlike rectangular space in between the boulders, aligned exactly as that of Orion’s belt. Rosalyn then realises that Tinashe has followed her to Stonehenge. With the assistance of the book and the maps Tinashe manages to decipher the clues. He gives the Latin commands and a staircase to a mysterious world below the rocks opens up. Both of them venture down the stairs where, at the bottom, they find seven doors, each with different names. The seventh had the name “El Dorado” on it. To be continued
This week’s winner is Annie Chakwizira , a Grade 8 learner at Ridgeway College. She wins this week’s R300 cash prize.

How does it work? We wrote the first chapter of the story. Two stories are featured, an English one and an Afrikaans story. The stories alternate, meaning one week the English chapter appears and the next week the Afrikaans story’s chapter. The first chapter set the parameters of the story, such as some of the characters and a very basic plot. Where the story will eventually end up is totally up to our young readers. Every new chapter gets published on a Thursday in the newspaper. The writers then have up to the following Wednesday afternoon to send in their contributions. The entries will be judged by a panel of writers. Every week’s winning entry will receive a small prize. An overall prize for the best contributions (English and Afrikaans) will also be given at the end of the series.

Rosalyn finds out that the door to El Dorado is a lethal trap

ithout turning back, Rosalyn shouted, “‘That’s the door … Grandpa!! … He’s there!” She could feel the presence of her beloved grandfather! Tinashe gazed at her, at the door and back to the map. He tried piecing together what the chief had hinted to him before he had lost contact via their old telegram communication system. The memory was too hazy. It was all a rush at the moment. He faintly remembered five words, fores circumventionem erroris mentis dolum, - doors deceive, beware of the tricks. Tinashe instantly flung out his arms to hold back Rosalyn’s determined charge. Furious, Rosalyn remarked: “Tinashe, what

Kholofelo Nethengwe’s entry unfortunately arrived when the judging was already finalized. (Please enter again, because it was quite good.) Remember, there is only one chapter left. The challenge is now to rescue Rosalyn’s grandfather and preferably get them back home safely. Unless, of course, the young writers have other ideas.

O N S KO O K . . .
Game employees take to the streets over restructuring By Bernard Chiguvare Some 20 employees from the Game store in Louis Trichardt went on a three-day strike last week, demanding salary increases and expressing their dissatisfaction over Massmart’s restructuring plans. Massmart Holdings is the company that owns local brands such as Game, Makro, Builder’s Warehouse and CBW. In February, the company issued a Section 189 notice, which is to affect about 100 employees at these stores. Employees complained about working conditions, retrenchments, reduced working hours, demotion of workers and “mapping” (reassigning people according to their qualifications).
The protesters, affiliated to SACCAWU (South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union), sang, and blew on vuvuzelas, waving placards reading “Massmart stop job losses”, “Justice delayed is justice denied” and “Massmart stop the robot”, while only a few workers remained in the shop to serve customers. According to Massmart’s Corporate Reputation Manager, Ms Michelle Kemp, the strike was initiated by SACCAWU. “The industrial action arises from a dispute declared by SACCAWU, although the specific detail of the dispute is, in our opinion, relatively vague as it appears to relate to matters that have been under discussion with SACCAWU for a number of months and have, in fact, been settled,” she told the

online publication, Groundup, on enquiry. “Our main concern for the nature of this type of industrial action is that, in the context of the current economic environment, it has the potential to cause previously avoidable job losses.” A woman who claimed to represent the workers would not allow the Zoutpansberger to speak to any of the protesters. “You are disturbing us. We do not want the media here today. No worker should speak to the media,” she said. One of the SACCAWU members, however, referred the Zoutpansberger to the union’s regional coordinator, who promised to respond to this paper’s enquiry, but at the time of our going to press his response had still not been received.

Four arrested for selling counterfeit goods in Musina get hefty fines By Bernard Chiguvare Four foreign shop owners who sold counterfeit goods in Musina’s central business district were arrested on Friday, 21 May. The Hawks received a tip-off and, joined by Polokwane’s Tactical Response Team, Musina’s Visible Police and Customs at Beitbridge, raided the shops. An assortment of suspected counterfeit sneakers of different brands, to the value of more than R250 000, was seized.
The suspects are all males. Abdul Umer, Sultan Girbo, Abrahim Asan and Abdul Karim, whose nationalities are still to be determined, appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 May. Their case was postponed to 25 May for sentencing and the court ordered all seized goods to be forfeited to the State. Umer and Girbo were each sentenced to a R10 000 fine or 12 months’ imprisonment. Asan was sentenced to a R24 000 fine or five years’ impris-
onment, while Karim was given a R5 000 fine or five years’ imprisonment. Half of these sentences were suspended for five years. The Hawks’ Captain Matimba Maluleke said that they had made such arrests before. Musina’s strategic position makes it prone to smuggled goods. According to Maluleke, smugglers make Musina and the surrounding areas their first stop when goods are smuggled through Beitbridge Border Post.

In haar plek is me. Ronel Meiring (regs).

SACM’s 16th annual charity golf day a huge success Golf News South African Custodial Management (SACM) in Louis Trichardt hosted their 16th annual charity golf day at the Soutpansberg Golf Club on Friday, 28 May, in a tournament that drew players from as far and wide as Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Mookgophong and Polokwane. A full field of 18 teams teed off for this 4-ball on a fairly sunny winters day. Just prior, players were welcomed during registration with goodie bags from SACM. At the end of the day’s competition the prize-giving took place and each and every player received a prize. The prison director of the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre, Mr Dumisani Nzimande,
thanked the club’s captain, Ryno Gerber, club president Inus Steyn and all the players for making the golf day a success. All the players turned up. He also thanked all the sponsors. Among the 18 teams who competed, two teams stood out. Mapula Enterprises played exceptionally well to win the event with 106 points. The runners-up were the team from Kensani Correction Management (KCM), who finished on 101 points. “The main specific aim of the day is to generate some revenue in order to plough back to the communities within the Vhembe District Municipality to uplift the living standard of the frail, disabled, elderly persons and children,” Nzimande said during the prize-giving function.
