By Silas Nduvheni The mayor of Musina, Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, is involved in another fight, but this time for the survival of his political career.

This follows an incident at a liquor tavern the past weekend where he ended up being arrested for allegedly assaulting a young man.

Mawela’s arrest caused an uncomfortable situation in the ruling party, as he may be expected to step aside, pending the outcome of the court case. The ANC’s “step-aside policy” implies that those members facing criminal charges must voluntarily step aside and face the party’s integrity committee, until the matter is resolved.

The Musina mayor appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 February, on a charge of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He had allegedly assaulted and injured Carris Munzhelele (25) with his fists and a beer bottle during a drinking spree at a local tavern in the early morning hours of Saturday, 26 February. Both Mawela and Munzhelele are residents of Muswodi-Dipeni village, outside Musina.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 03:00, although the details surrounding the matter are still unclear. Munzhelele’s mother, Ms Rendani Mavundadavhi, told Limpopo Mirror that she was awoken that morning by her son, who was running for his life to hide from the mayor and a group of other men who were chasing him after a brawl at a local tavern.

Mavundadavhi (48) said her son was injured when he got there. She accompanied him to the Muswodi-Dipeni Police Station to report the incident, and police officers took them back to their home to find out what had happened.

When the mayor and his gang later arrived at her house, Mavundadavhi thought that he had come to ask for forgiveness for what had happened.

“Surprisingly, the mayor showed no remorse and started swearing at me, pointing his fingers at me and spitting in my face, right in front of the police, while they did nothing. I was disappointed that a dignified figure like the mayor was still at the tavern at 03:00 in the morning, fighting with young men, with his group of boys who booze with him by his side. As soon as he gets into a fight, they help him,” said Mavundadavhi.

According to her, the police were reluctant to do anything and also left, saying that her son had to go for a medical examination, so she hired transportation and went to the Vhufuli Donald Fraser Hospital. Afterwards, Munzhelele went back to the police station with a letter from the doctor and a case was opened.

“I don’t know how are we going to live with the mayor, as we live in the same village. We haven’t seen my son since he went to the police station from the hospital to open a case. He is nowhere to be found, but when I called him, he said he was in hiding because he is still afraid of the mayor and his boys,” Mavundadavhi said.

She planned on going to the Mutale Magistrate’s Court to get a protection order against Mawela, as they fear for her son’s life.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the police in Muswodi had arrested a 39-year-old man for assault GBH on the night of 26 February.

Mawela made an urgent bail application soon after his arrest and was granted R3 000 bail.

When he appeared in court again on Monday, 28 February, he was not asked to plead. His case was postponed to 29 April for further police investigation and for him to get legal representation of his choice.

The spokesperson for the ANC in the Vhembe Region, Ms Gumani Mukwevho, told Limpopo Mirror that they were supposed to meet with the mayor after his court appearance to discuss his fate and the consequences of the matter.

She could not say when the meeting was to take place, only that they would issue a statement soon.

Mr Donald Selamolela, spokesperson for the Limpopo ANC, said the organization was disturbed by the mayor’s case, but that they were still waiting for the regional office in Vhembe to address them on the matter.

When asked about the “step-aside policy” of the ANC, Selamolela said that, for now, they could not comment on the issue, since they were still waiting to find out what had happened. He said that they would comment further as soon as the Vhembe regional office had thoroughly investigated the Mawela incident.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Musina Local Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, said that the municipality could not comment further on the matter since the matter was sub judice.

Netshivhale and Nelwamondo clans clash again over land demarcation

By Elmon Tshikhudo The longstanding battle to control the land and determine who the rightful ruler of the Lwamondo is, has flared up again. The fight is between the Netshivhale clan, led by Chief Ntambudzeni Netshivhale, and the Nelwamondo clan, led by senior traditional leader Thovhele Calvin Nelwamondo.

Last week, an ugly war of words erupted between the two parties and nearly ended in a disaster when the two parties vowed to fight tooth and nail to prove they are the rightful owners of the land.

The new point of misunderstanding is the demarcation of more than 1 200 sites for residential purposes by the Nelwamondo traditional council, which the Netshivhale traditional council disputed and vowed would not happen as the land in question belong to them This is not the first time the two traditional councils have had a standoff. In 2015, hundreds of people who bought sites from Chief Ntambudzeni Netshivhale were left in limbo when the Lwamondo traditional council successfully interdicted them from setting

The latest standoff that nearly turned ugly started a fortnight ago when the Nelwamondo traditional council wanted to commence with the demarcation of the sites but were disrupted from doing so by a group allegedly from the Netshivhale traditional council.

This happened on three occasions, and the Nelwamondo council had to employ the services of an armed security company, but still the sites could not be demarcated as the Netshivhale clan stood their ground and did not allow any activity to take place.

The spokesperson for the Nelwamondo traditional council, Mr Pedron Nndwa, said that they had followed all the necessary protocols after their subjects had requested sites for residential purposes.

“As protocol we requested all our headmen to submit the names of those who wanted sites and, after receiving the list, we applied (for permission) at the municipality and that was approved. We were surprised to find these people stopping the development and for that matter doing it without any paper or court order,” he said.

“This came as a surprise as the people who were doing this know they have no right to this land. They know we went to the land commission, and they lost. The law allowed them to appeal, but they did not do so,” he said.

Nndwa further indicated that they had hired a security company to keep order while the workers were doing their work. “We are a peaceful

people and did not want to fight them, even though they were provoking us. We are so disappointed that the municipal officials did not come after learning there could be trouble. This is delaying development and denying our subjects the right to have their own sites. We will wait and see what will transpire at our meeting with the municipality, but we are confident the sites will be demarcated soon,” he said.

Chief Ntambudzeni Netshivhale of the Tshivhale traditional council was adamant the land in question belonged to them and that no development would ever take place without their approval. “This is the land of our forefathers and those purporting to be owners of the place know fully that they found us here.

We are the rightful owners of this place, and no one will push us out. We know there is plot to install a new chief from Lwamondo to replace our own chief. This will not happen here. This is the land we are prepared to sacrifice our lives for if needs be. We are not against development, but it should follow the right protocols,” he said.

Some of the hawkers, who spoke to Limpopo Mirror on condition of anonymity, say that if they stop running their stalls, there is no way they can provide for their families. “This is my only means of surviving.

I have been running this stall for more than two decades. If I stop now, it will mean that my family and I will have to struggle to put food on the table,” a 55-year-old merchant said.

Another merchant could not understand why the shop owners are concerned, as they sell completely different commodities. “Most of us [hawkers] sell fruits and vegetables, which is quite different from what they are selling,” the 52-year-old woman said.

In response to the media’s enquiry about the situation, Peter Muthambi from the Makhado Municipality only replied that they were conducting an investigation into the matter.

Thovhele Tshivhase receives a special award from local church

By Silas Nduvheni A senior Vhavenda traditional leader, Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, received a Special Lifetime Achievement Award from the Redeeming Showers of Grace Christi Church International (RSGCCI) in Tshitereke village on Sunday, 20 February.

Tshivhase was honoured for his contributions throughout the years, especially to uplift the standard of education.

More than two decades ago already, he took the lead in asking for funds from the late former President Nelson Mandela to re-build Tshivhase and Mphephu Secondary Schools. In 1995, Tshivhase further contributed towards the building of Tshivhase Secondary’s library. Besides that, he has also been making sure to visit the top matric learners in the Vhembe District to

congratulate and reward them personally with pocket money.

Tshivhase himself was awarded a new laptop to help him with his office administration, a traditional leader’s stick and a trophy. The event coincided with the church’s Excellence Awards, held in conjunction with the Vhembe West and East Department of Education. The top 17 learners in Vhembe each received a laptop, while hardworking teachers were also recognised.

Dr Lennox Nemukula, pastor of RSGCCI, said the church also recognised royal leaders who made the effort to encourage learners to take their education seriously as it served as a key to defeating poverty in rural communities.

“He [Tshivhase] loves the work of God and is always involved. Tshivhase also formed a Pastor’s Forum, which organises a conference called ‘The Cross and the Crown’ for all churches and royal leaders

at Ha-Tshivhase, which is an annual event,” Nemukula said.

Thovhele Tshivhase encouraged other royal leaders to follow suit in encouraging the young to get well educated for a better future. He said that they (royal leaders) could not just stand by idly and watch while their duty should be to change life for the better for learners and communities.

The executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, congratulated the church on the role they play in encouraging excelling Grade 12 learners, and recognising royal leaders for the role they play in uplifting their communities.

The mayor also encouraged learners to further their studies after matric and urged them to apply for the Vhembe Mayoral Bursary Fund, which will enable them to pay for their tuition fees at tertiary education institutions.

Khubana says that, although it looks easy, his job requires hard work and commitment.

“I start work at 06:00 in the morning and knock off at 18:00 in the evening. My wife makes sure that the pigs are fed at home during the day. At the end of each day, I make sure that there is enough meat, water and firewood for the next day. It gets very hectic sometimes because most days I work alone, except on the days when I slaughter a pig and my uncle comes to assist me.”

Four Zimbabwean men were arrested on charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms, following a shoot-out with the police at Matswale Phase 8 Township on the outskirts of Musina last week.

On Tuesday, 22 February, Musina police received information about a gang of armed men who were allegedly terrorising communities around Musina Town with robberies and other crimes, and a task team was immediately assembled to conduct a snap search. When the police arrived at the identified location, a man believed to be one of the suspected group of robbers allegedly started shooting at the police, who returned fire and fatally wounded him. He was identified as Prince Dube from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Further probing led the team to another one of Dube’s accomplices, who was apprehended on the same day, while three more suspects were arrested the following day (23 February). Five illegal firearms were recovered during the police’s search. The firearms were subjected to ballistic examination to determine if they had been used in other serious crimes.

Vho-Nese portrays a sad reality Ndou releases his sixth album of rude nurses at public hospitals

In one of his more popular videos, the young man, who is by now well known as ‘Vho-Nese’, imitates a round, rude nurse at a public clinic in Ngovhela. Instead of assisting the sickly patients and treating them with compassion, the nurse is always insolent and inconsiderate, takes long lunch breaks, constantly entertains village gossip and even ignores nurse-patient confidentiality.

This scenario was inspired by an instance that Mulalo himself experienced with a very unfriendly and unhelpful nurse at a government clinic when he was only 12 years old. “When I started making these videos, I wanted to pass the message on to rude nurses out there, so that they can see for themselves how they treat their patients.”

Mulalo said that this video had stirred a lot of reaction from the public. “People really love the content. I especially receive great support from professional nurses, which is extraordinary,” he said.

The 22-year-old from Ngovhela village, who is studying to become a teacher, has 27 900 followers on TikTok TikTok, and his video has already been liked by more than 168 000 people.

Despite playing the role of a “bad nurse” in the video, Mulalo also reminds people to be safe and use protection during sexual intercourse.

In 2004, Ndou rubbed shoulders with successful Zimbabwean musicians from Johannesburg, and today he is known for the rhumba or tshingondo sounds he produces. His songs are often played on the local community radio stations - Phalaphala FM, Makhado FM and Nzhelele FM - as well as the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC).

Ndou believes that for people to support, rather than undermine, each other is important. “Together we can win, but separated we fall.

I am greatly encouraged by the unity showed by both the Shona-speaking people and the whites. These races really help each other. This, unfortunately, is not something we see in the Tsonga communities.”

Utikedzana is his sixth album and consists of six tracks, including Vha gude, Umuzi and Uya nkhuthadzaand.

“There will definitely be more to come,” he promised his fans. His music is available on YouTube (Bernard Tshibemuda) and digital music stores.

Miss P releases her first book

By Kaizer Nengovhela Pandelani Mulaudzi from Block P East in Thohoyandou’s first motivational book was recently published in both English and Tshivenda. The book, called I’m fine, thank you / A thina thaidzo, ndo livhuwa, written under the name “Miss P”, deals with self-discovery and defining oneself.

What inspired her to write it, she says, was when she noticed how many people around her lacked motivation. “I wrote this book to motivate others. I like seeing people making it in life through motivation.”

Mulaudzi believes that for people not to rely on others to define them is important.

“Once you re-define yourself, you will begin to realise your worth,” she said. The book also encourages the reader not to give up on life or on their dreams. “The content in this book is suitable for all age groups and not necessarily the youth alone, although it will certainly also instil discipline and many other virtues among young people. I want it to have a strong impact on the readers. Once they have read it, they must feel compelled to start a new thing in their lives.”

Growing up, she used to read many of her dad’s books, and that was the spark that ignited her love of literature and the freedom that comes with it to be creative. She loves writing short stories and poems, and had always dreamed of writing a book. “I admire so many of the authors. I knew I wanted to become

one myself someday. It was only in 2020 that I decided to put pen to paper. I have only written one book so far, but I’m hoping to write more soon. I would also like to try writing novels as well.”

Mulaudzi says she has also tried her hand at writing poems; in fact, her book is also filled with some of her poems. “I am very grateful to God that I was able to discover my gift as an author at an early age,” she said. “The book will especially go a long way in motivating rural kids, showing them that, irrespective of their background, they can go far in life.”

She

hopes to grow in a career as a scientist and author in coming years.

Art & Entertainment New album for Munuruli and The Vambu Express Boys

By Frank Mavhungu A resident of Tshaulu village in the Tshilaphala area, Mashudu Nelushi, is one of the local music artists whose music is growing in popularity as time goes by.

Nelushi’s love of music started when he was a Grade 5 pupil at the Thomani Primary School way back in 2009. He said that he used to follow two local artists, Jacky Mulidzi and Azwinndini Maphutha, wherever they were doing live performances in the area.

Mulidzi quickly spotted the young man’s passion for tshingondo music, and he decided to teach him how to play the bass guitar. That was the beginning of his road to fame. Nelushi,

who is also known as Munuruli, later joined Mulidzi’s band, Phuthalushin and the Fire Boys. The group released two albums, Mulanga and Volenga, with Nelushi playing the bass guitar.

The group disbanded after releasing their second album, Volenga. Nelushi did not give up, despite all the odds. He decided to form his own band instead, namely Munuruli and The Vambu Express Boys, in 2017. The group went to Tshigomboza’s Recording Studio in Muledane the following year, where their debut album, Tshidumbumukwe, was recorded.

The album was released later that year, featuring songs such as Di rweni khana, Mufunwa

wanga Diya, Lufuno and the title song, Tshidumbumukwe. The success of this album prompted Munuruli and his group to go back to the recording studio towards the end of last year. Their new release, Nwali Baba, was recorded at the Mphagani Recording Studio in Muledane.

Nwali Baba was released two weeks ago. The album is contains six songs. The songs promising to make the album a “must have” include U tonga havho, Musadzi wanu, Vhusiwana and Mbingano. The album is available on CD and several digital platforms, including YouTube and Amazon.

Dopekid Shewacher is reaching for the stars

Nothing seems to be able to stop local-born producer, beatmaker and vocal artist Dopekid Shewacher as he keeps on climbing the music ladder.

Shewacher’s latest album, titled Only You, moves seamlessly between Amapiano, hip-hop and Afro-beat sounds. The album comprises only three tracks, the songs Only You, Cheese and the closing track, Walk of Shame was released via Present Global, featuring artists such as Kulani, Trima C Cotha, Sheriff and TEA SOR. “This EP runs wild across a rich sonic terrain that thrives in the fusion of genres, ready for the heat and smoke of the club,” said Shewacher.

Dopekid Shewacher was born Nyiko Emmanuel Sambo at Migad village in the Elim area and began singing at the tender age of six.

He explained that his unstoppable desire to create music fuelled his passion. “I would steal my late father’s cassettes and erase everything on them to record my own vocals. I started creating my own music at Djunane Primary School,” he said.

His most recent high-profile performance was as part of Uncle Vinny’s birthday celebration, with the likes of the late Ricky

Rick, Major League, Blxckie and many more. “My first big performance was at the Makhado Show Grounds in 2016. I shared the stage with Da Les, Colbert Mukwevho, P Postman, Mizo Phyll and Dbn Nyts,” he said.

Dopekid Shewacher’s wide-ranging gifts swiftly earned him his Dope Kid moniker. “I would go to studio sessions after school to sharpen my skills and knowledge.

Everyone would compliment my work and say, “you are too dope kid”, so that's when I decided to call myself Dopekid,” he said.

He said that the local owner of Backyard studio, Makapeni Mawela from the area, had given him full authority to use his studio. “At the age of 15, I used a local professional studio to record my first single.

I titled the track Rydo, and with help from my friends, we managed to produce a music video,” he said.

The song earned him the attention of fans and recognition in the music industry. Since then, he has steadily built up his production, song-writing and performing credits.

Michael Makungo wins top sports award The eighth edition of the Limpopo Sports, Arts and Culture Awards was held at Meropa Casino in Polokwane on Saturday, 26 February, and SABC Limpopo’s Michael Makungo scooped up the award for Sports Journalist of the Year 2021.

The annual awards were hosted by the Limpopo MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Thandi Moraka. Altogether 29 categories competed, with three nominees in each category.

Makungo contested against the likes of Ofhani Munyai from the FARPost and Herbert Rachuene from the Northern Media Group.

He was nominated for this award on three previous occasions.

When receiving his award, Makungo expressed his sincere joy and gratitude for being honoured. He gave credit and thanked his family and friends, the SABC, his editors, colleagues in the newsroom and Phalaphala FM for supporting him and having confidence in him. “I could not have come this far if it had not been for these people,” he said.

The Tshaulu-born journalist from Vhembe not only received a trophy, but also a cheque for R20 000.

Makungo is well known for providing updates on the latest developments in the various sporting codes on Phalaphala FM’s Ndevhetsini (current affairs) show every Monday morning. He started his primary-school education at Mutshetshe Primary and completed Grade 12 at Mpandeli Secondary School, before he went on to Witwatersrand College of Commerce to study for a diploma in journalism. He started his career in the media at Tshivhoni Newspaper, then moved to City Press, Friday Mail and the Marketplace Magazine, and finally joined SABC News in around 2008.

Makungo dedicated his award to the late Tshilidzi “Poison” Ndevana, who was president of traditional bare-knuckle fist fighting, known as Musangwe in Limpopo, and also to the late Sam Mashila, who was a top boxing official. They died in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Tivani Mabulele’s art captures the eye

By Thembi Siaga A 29-year-old visual artist from Waterval, Tivani Ernest Mabulele, is slowly but surely getting the recognition he deserves. His current collection is titled Childhood Memories and is on display at August House in Doornfontein, Johannesburg.

August House is an exclusive art building that houses more than 50 contemporary independent, pan-African artists. Since it was opened in 2006, its walls have been graced by the works of some of the most talented local artists.

Mabulele’s paintings caught the eyes of art lovers in 2019 when he was selected as one of the top 25 contestants in the State of Art for People's Choice Awards. He ended up in second place in this prestigious competition. “Later that year, I was part of the top 100 artworks selected for the Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards,” he said.

Tivani’s vibrant and bold works

of art include a painting that portrays a ballerina’s emotional struggles while dancing. “Artistically I am motivated by my surroundings and my daily encounters with people and the different problems they’re facing. Through encouragement from them, I started learning independently,” he said.

Mabulele has never been to an art school, but this did not deter him from following his passion.

He explained that growing up in a community where art is not viewed as a career did not make him forsake his dreams. “My upbringing does not relate much to my work, but I am inspired to teach and introduce the art world to the people from my village,” he said.

For Mabulele, art remains a vehicle to express universal emotions. “It’s a revelation of what I believe the world will become.

A world where both cultures (western and African culture) will coexist. I dream of a world that’s

united,” he said.

He believes that his work will illuminate the margins and make societal changes. “Art helps me vent and speak at the highest level possible without using words. (It helps me) to address different issues with each

brushstroke to touch my audience without saying a word,” he said.

The MMSEZ SOC intends to install bulk infrastructure, towards the development of their North Site of the Special Economic Zone near Musina. The bulk infrastructure to be installed include water, wastewater, electricity, roads and stormwater, and integrated security infrastructure. The proposed project is located on a portion of Portion 1 of the farm Antonvilla 7 MT within Musina Local Municipality, Vhembe District of the Limpopo Province. The project site is a greenfield development area of approximately 3 500 hectares located approximately 10 km on the north-eastern of Musina town and south of the Zimbabwe border with South Africa. However, the completion of Phase 1 of bulk infrastructure projects, which is the focus of this study will be on a portion of the farm that extends only 351 hectares. The Limpopo River forms the northern boundary of the development area and the Sand River the eastern boundary. Road D1942, also known as the Malala Drift Road, traverses the proposed development area and leads to Phafuri Gate to the north east.

“Thulamela doesn’t care about us,” complain residents of Mahlarini

By Maanda Bele The Mahlarini village in Dopeni, Nzhelele, is located on top of the famous Tswime Mountain, a few kilometres from the Siloam CBD. The only thing that separates the Mahlarini and Siloam villages is the Nzhelele River.

Despite Mahlarini’s being well known for its hot spring, the locals say that the village has been neglected by the local municipality.

On visiting this remote village (which falls under Thulamela Ward 27), one can clearly see the absence of basic services such as water and electricity. No RDP houses can be seen, only collapsing little dwellings. Most of the villagers rely on Sassa and Covid Social Relief of Distress grants. Most of the community – young and old alike - are unemployed.

concerns is getting across to Siloam during the rainy season.

When it rains, the Nzhelele River pushes up and floods their make-shift bridge. The bridge is the only way for the children to get across to go to school in the Siloam CBD. All they need, they say, is a proper, safe bridge to link them to Siloam.

This has been a main concern for many years. The principals from neighbouring schools, such as Siloam Primary, Mushaathoni Secondary, Tshirenzheni Primary, Mphephu High and Tshifhena Secondary Schools, already know that, whenever they see dark clouds in the sky, they have to release learners from the Mahlarini area early, or the poor children will not be able to get home.

Mr Wilson Silidi, the principal of Siloam Primary, told Limpopo Mirror that he used

his own car to take the children from Mahlarini home after heavy rains, using the Mphephu Resort route. “Sometimes we have to send them home early or tell them not to come at all. It is very sad because they miss out on their lessons.”

He said he wished something could be done to help these poor kids.

However, according to Thulamela Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Ndwamato Tshila, a bridge is not on the cards for Mahlarini village. “We don’t have such a project in our IDP.” After the February floods last year, concerned parents carried their children to school on their backs. “This situation pains us as parents. Whenever it rains, we fear for our children. They also have a right to education like any other children,” one of the parents said. “This municipality doesn’t care about us.”

Beware of fake invitations to submit tenders, warns Musina municipality Musina news Musina Municipality has warned service providers to be wary of scams involving tenders that are currently doing the rounds on social media.

The latest scam is apparently advertised as tender number 02-2020/22 for the construction of the Lesley Manyathela Stadium. The scammer/s pretend to be a Mr TM Mthombeni from Musina Municipality with the following message: “Kindly contact me regarding the above-mentioned bid in the subject description contractor of the construction of Lesley Manyathela Stadium on the following number 063 546 5512”.

Musina’s municipal manager, Mr Nathi Tshiwanammbi, urged service providers to familiarise themselves with how government institutions procure goods and services. He said that these tender scams had the potential to rob innocent people of their money. “The municipality keeps on getting telephone calls from service providers

who want to verify the legitimacy of these tenders. When we investigate, we find that they are nothing but scams, meant to rob people of their hard-earned cash,” he said.

Tshiwanammbi advised people to be very careful, as it sometimes happens that fraudsters use what appears to be government stationery with fictitious logos and contact details for services.

“As government, we work hard at preventing and fighting fraud, but criminal activity is always a risk. We warn service providers that, when they receive tender requests and are unsure about their legitimacy, it is always wise to give the municipality a call or come personally to our offices to verify. The tender process is managed through the supply-chain management (SCM) system of the municipality and not by an individual who goes around calling people,” he said.

Makhado’s vacant positions must be filled to ensure service delivery

By Anton van Zyl Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Samuel Munyai, has urged his management team to fill all the vacant positions at the municipality. During a recent strategic session, the mayor emphasised that these positions need to be filled to ensure the effective rendering of services.

The municipality held a week-long strategy session at the Tshipise Aventura Resort

a fortnight ago. During this session, Munyai stressed that they are working towards achieving a clean audit.

When addressing the councillors and administrative management team, Munyai said that the municipality had the potential to achieve such an audit opinion in the 2021/22 financial year.

Last year, the municipality achieved an unqualified opinion from the auditor-general, but this can be improved on,

he said.

Munyai also urged all municipal employees to be committed and execute their responsibilities with dedication. In his progress report, he said that several projects were underway in various parts of the municipality. All projects are progressing very well. Premier peddling half truths say enviro groups

By Andries van Zyl The annual State of the Province Address (SOPA) on 24 February once again gave Limpopo Premier Mr Stanley Mathabatha a platform to make residents excited about government’s plans regarding the province’s economic growth, social development and prosperity for all its residents. As part of this, he promised 48 000 new job opportunities and again highlighted the Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) as one of the province’s flagship projects. Not all, however, applauded his announcement regarding the MMSEZ. “After a long journey of pursuing the establishment of the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone, we are proud to announce that finally the project will be officially launched this year. This follows the granting of the environmental authorization by the relevant authorities. This milestone will unlock the unlimited opportunities for the provincial economy,” said Mathabatha in his speech.

MMSEZ “dream” taking shape Mathabatha said that they had already set aside R600 million towards infrastructure rollout at the North Site of the project in Musina.

“The manufacturing, agro-processing and logistics hubs of the project are finally taking off the ground. We are well on track in turning the Musina-Makhado Corridor into a melting-pot of industrial activity,” said Mathabatha. He proudly added that, in keeping with the global policy shift on energy generation and their commitment to sustainable development, the SEZ had embraced the net-zero carbon-emission goal by introducing green solar power. “In December 2021, the Musina-Makhado SEZ secured an investment commitment for the first phase of the energy-generation project to install a multi-billion-rand 1, 000-megawatt solar-power plant to support the metallurgical complex,” said Mathabatha.

In the same vein, Mathabatha said, they had made significant progress towards securing water resources for the SEZ. “This includes engagements with Zimbabwe and other SADC member states,” said the Premier. The issue of bulk-water supply to the proposed MMSEZ has always been a contentious issue.

Regarding the MMSEZ, Mathabatha concluded that they were also excited about the partnership with the Vhembe TVET College to build its Musina Satellite Campus inside the SEZ. “The partnership will contribute significantly to empower the youth in technical and vocational training,”

Regarding this, Fourie said that SOLVE, the Centre for Environmental Rights, Earthlife Africa, Vhembe Minerals Resources Development Forum and other organisations would oppose and object to each and every one of these projects. “SOLVE and the other organizations are currently waiting to be formally informed of the EA granted for parts of the MMSEZ development, after which we will formally appeal the decision. All legal teams of the various non-profit organisations are currently preparing legal documentation, since we expect the battle against the MMSEZ to be waged in court,” said Fourie.

Based on court decisions relating to the seismic surveys that were planned for the Wild Coast and West Coast, Fourie said they were very optimistic that they had more than enough grounds to stand on for the courts to halt the site clearing and construction of any bulk infrastructure, until all their objections had been adequately dealt with. “We will not fall in the same trap again (as with the Vele Mine) to allow any work to be done on the site, as it opens up an avenue to push the rest of the project through based on the argument that ‘a lot of work, effort and money have been invested already and therefore the rest of the projects must continue’, as per Edna Molewa when granting a water-use license for Vele Mine. The fight against the MMSEZ and for the protection of the Limpopo valley’s environment and for a sustainable-development project that can create real development and jobs for our own people only starts now!” said Fourie.

Angry community protests against bail granted to murder suspect

Residents came here to make a statement. The message is clear: that he [Makuane] is no longer wanted in the village and that he must not be granted bail.”

Ramulifho said they would support the bereaved family until the case was finalised. “The case traumatised the whole village. We had to cool down residents who wanted to take the law into their own hands, but if he is granted bail, his safety could not be guaranteed. We hope that the message we sent to the court will be heeded and that he spends his whole life behind bars,” he said.

The family’s spokesperson, Mbangiseni Dzivhani, said Ramango’s murder had torn at their hearts. “This is something we never imagined would ever happen, especially not by a member of the family. The old woman did not offer any resistance. He could have just taken whatever he wanted and spared her life, but he decided to kill her in the most brutal way. We have faith in the justice system, and we hope he will get what he deserves,” she said.

Makuane (23) appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 18 February. His case was postponed to 30 March 2022, and he will remain in custody.

Anger about the perceived inefficiencies of the justice system has communities from all around the Vhembe District in revolt.

People say they have had enough of the ludicrously high crime rate and point angry fingers at the local police for not making more of an effort to apprehend criminals.

The court officials are also criticised not punishing those who do get caught, often releasing hardened or dangerous criminals on bail and ultimately endangering communities.

In November of 2021, a mentally challenged woman (25) was allegedly raped by her uncle at Tshimbupfe Malonga, outside Vuwani. The suspect, who lived in an adjacent house to the victim, was arrested but the community was shocked to see him back at the village not long afterwards when he was granted bail.

When the outraged community petitioned the court’s decision, the man’s bail was revoked, and he was taken back into custody. He is to appear in court on 1 March 2022.

On 4 February this year, 88-year-old Bukuta Pauline Ramango from the same village was brutally murdered at her home while she was preparing to bath. The suspect in this case, Londolani Makuane (23), who also happens to be a relative, was allegedly confronted when stealing the gogo’s money. When she caught him and called him by his name, he allegedly panicked and killed her before he fled the scene. However, another relative saw him at the house before the murder and he was arrested after being on the run for a day.

The incident angered the community even further and they vowed to do everything in their power to see to it that justice gets served this time - even if it means that they have to take the law into their own hands.

Community leader Samuel Ramulifho said they were very disappointed as a community about the prevalent crime in their village, especially those committed between relatives who are supposed to be taking care of each other. In response to Mathabatha’s speech, Democratic Alliance’s (DA) leader in the provincial legislature, Mr Jacques Smalle, said that the premier might have announced investments for the MMSEZ, but without efficient water infrastructure, proper sanitation and a well- maintained road network in the Vhembe District, these investments would amount to nothing.

Mabaleng approached the game aggressively, with their strikers showing a great appetite for goals. Mabaleng were leading by a goal at half time.

Their opening goal came in the 35th minute when Khodani Lukheli scored with a header after a corner kick

Venda Football Academy (VFA) are still battling to come to terms with the 0-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Richards Bay FC in their GladAfrica Championship League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday.

VFA very quickly realized that they were facing an uphill struggle day when they squandered two clear scoring chances within the first 15 minutes of the game. In the first instance, their diminutive striker, Rudzani “Zobo” Thobo, tried his luck with a ground cutter from the edge of the box. A defender for Richards Bay, Tshepo Mabua, braved the shot and cleared the ball from the goal line, much to the fans’ disappointment.

As if that was not enough to irritate the supporters, Thembisani Nevhulamba was unlucky moments thereafter. He tried his luck with a half volley from the 20-metre area. The ball missed the target by inches.

A defender for VFA, Fezile Gcaba, was the only player who was reprimanded with a yellow card. He tackled Thulani Ndlela from behind in the 36th minute.

Soccer festival awaits at Thohoyandou Stadium The Thohoyandou Stadium will be a hive of activity this weekend. Three GladAfrica Championship League matches will be played there. The first match will be played on Friday afternoon, when Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM) will test their strength against Pretoria Callies.

TTM and Callies are tied on 21 points. The two teams had failed to collect the maximum points in their matches last weekend. TTM played to a goalless draw with TS Sporting at the Kabokweni Stadium outside Nelspruit last Saturday, while Callies shared the spoils with Free State Stars in a 2-2 draw at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.

Callies must keep an eagle’s eye on TTM’s strikers, Rhulani Manzini, Tumi Ngwepe and Tshepo Matete, or else they will concede an avalanche of goals.

Black Leopards will host Hungry Lions FC at the same venue on Saturday afternoon.

Lidoda duvha must win the match, no matter the cost, to enhance their chances of surviving the chop at the end of the season. Leopards are perched at the bottom of the log with 15 points, while Hungry Lions are in the 10th spot on the log standings with 25 points.

Isaac Masia, Andiswa Ndawonde and Kyaan Bull will be expected to bring stability to the Leopards’ defence, while the Thohoyandou side will pin their scoring hopes on Daniel Gozar and Maboke Matlakala.

The match not to be missed will be between Venda Football Academy (VFA) and JDR Stars at the same venue on Sunday. VFA and Stars are among the teams that are poised to win the league title. The Stars from Pretoria are lying in the third spot on the log standings with 34

points, while VFA are two points behind.

VFA and Stars are still in mourning after losing their matches last weekend. VFA lost 0-1 to Richards Bay FC, while JDR Stars lost 1-2 to Platinum City Rovers.

The other weekend fixtures are Richards Bay FC vs Polokwane City, TS Sporting vs Cape Town All Stars, Uthongathi FC vs Free State Stars, Cape Town Spurs vs Jomo Cosmos and Platinum City Rovers vs University of Pretoria FC.

Time is fast running out for one of the local affiliates in the GladAfrica Championship League, Black Leopards FC. Lidoda duvha could only manage to grab one point in their last three league matches.

On Sunday, 20 February, Leopards donated points to Pretoria Callies, to whom they lost 0-2 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium outside Pretoria.

Last Wednesday, the Thohoyandou-based side shared the spoils with Cape Town All Stars, with whom they played to a 1-1 draw at the Thohoyandou Stadium. To add insult to injury, Leopards lost 1-0 against the University of Pretoria FC the past Saturday at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria.
