By Andries van Zyl A tent erected across a street in a busy residential area of Louis Trichardt has once again sparked outrage.

Tents being pitched across streets in Louis Trichardt have become somewhat of a common occurrence, despite being prohibited by law. This was the case again the past week when a tent, completely blocking the roadway, was pitched across Vorster Street between Munnik and Anderson Street.

This sparked a furore from

frequent users of the road, who argued that the action showed a total disregard for the rights of others and a failure by the perpetrators to grasp the basic concept that doing so is illegal.

Since Monday, the newspaper has been inundated with calls from angry residents complaining about the tent. Also on Monday, photos were being circulated on social media, showing traffic officials attending to the scene, but seemingly to no avail; by Tuesday morning, the tent was still up.

ident, who asked to remain anonymous, indicated that he had tried in vain to have the tent removed since it was erected. “When I phoned the police, they said it was a traffic problem, and vice versa. I had a good mind to drive my truck through the tent and sue the perpetrators for damages caused by the illegal structure on the roadway,” he said.

Fortunately, however, the above irate resident did not need to resort to such extremes. The newspaper had in the meantime informed the Makhado Municipality of residents’ complaints and asked them whether or not they intended to remove the illegal structure. Sure enough, just after 11:00 on Tuesday, the newspaper received a photo from municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi, showing a group of men taking down the tent.

Asked whether the perpetrators had been warned or received a fine for illegally erecting the tent over the street, Bobodi said no. He explained that they had rather opted to remind the people that erecting a tent across the street was illegal and advised them to take it down.

This “advice” came through the Department of Community Services.

“If they resisted, then we would have warned and fined them,” said Bobodi.

Volgens Muller is ongeveer 30-40% van leerders agter met hulle werk. “Die rede vir die agterstallige werk kan wees dat, ten spyte van volledige kommunikasie van die skool se kant, dit nie ontvang is nie, of bloot net nie gedoen is nie – iets buite die skool se beheer,” noem Muller. Meer as 90% van leerders is terug by die skool. Slegs diegene wat onderliggende siektetoestande het, óf wat verkies om in hierdie stadium steeds van e-leer gebruik te maak, is nog tuis. Leerders word aangeraai om tuis te bly wanneer hulle siek voel, of wanneer ‘n familielid siek is. “Ons is dankbaar dat daar nog geen Covid-19 geval in ons skool was nie – dit is net ‘n groot genade dat dit nog nie nodig was om die skool te sluit nie,” sê hy.

Muller wil graag vir die ouers wat volgehou het om skoolfonds te betaal, opreg bedank. Hy wil ook ander ouers uitnooi om met die skool reëlings te tref en ‘n plan van aksie uit te werk ten opsigte van betalings. Die skool het almal se samewerking bitter nodig, anders sal van die bestuursliggaamposte in die gedrang wees.

SAHRC to investigate @TracyZille Politics The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) stated that they will pursue the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) complaint against the man allegedly behind the race-baiting @ TracyZille Twitter account, Mr Anthony Matumba.

Matumba, a prominent EFF politician and a member of the Makhado Municipality’s executive council, was caught in the crossfire at the beginning of July after being accused of creating a fake social media profile to stir racial tension and to profit from it. During an interview with the Zoutpansberger shortly afterwards, Matumba denied creating the account.

“Whoever is behind the @ TracyZille account is a coward. I will tell you straight out what my opinion is (I don’t need an alias),” Matumba told the newspaper. @TracyZille became quite well known in the weeks leading up to the media storm which erupted because of “her” controversial opinion on matters, especially those concerning the perceived differences between races. The profile is seemingly that of a middle-aged white woman who enjoys racial stereotyping.

Of the once bustling town of Schoemansdal, very little is left. In the little graveyard the remains of 122 people who died during the period, mostly after contracting malaria, rest peacefully. In 1917, fifty years after the evacuation, a brick wall was built around the graves. Mrs Van Warmelo’s grave was one of the many that was vandalised and destroyed by floods and elements of nature. The Louis Trichardt congregation of the Hervormde Kerk replaced the headstone some years later.

A number of readers have pointed out that the articles don’t always focus on the specific person the street was named after.

This is true, because it is not a series of biographies – it is a series focussing on the history of the region. The name of the street is a starting point, but from here we explore the rest of the region. Often the exploration ends in areas where the streets have no names, or otherwise put, where the main role players’ names were never put on street signs.

The story that starts with Van Warmelo is one such exploration.

Van Warmelo saw the need for proper tuition in the booming trade town and started classes for the children every weekday morning in the church hall. The inadequate facilities prompted him in April 1866 to write to the president of the ZAR, asking that a government school be established at Schoemansdal.

He even identified an ideal candidate for the post as schoolmaster, namely Cornelis van Boeschoten, a young man who assisted him when teaching the children.

The construction of a school building remained a dream for Van Warmelo and it seems as this became a reality early in 1867, albeit with funds provided by the local church congregation.

The reverend had to fulfil the role as building inspector, giving advice where necessary.

On 29 April 1867, Van Warmelo married Maria Maré, daughter of the then landdrost of the Soutpansberg, Dietlof Siegfried Maré.

Van Warmelo was clearly a very popular and loved figure. In later years Senator G.G. Munnik, in his memoirs, writes very kindly about the man of the gospel: “The Rev. Mr. Van Warmelo remained with his people in their wanderings, and became a veritable Moses to them. Everyone rushed to him with their joys, their griefs, and their sorrows.”

Life in Schoemansdal became increasingly more difficult with constant attacks by the Bavenda, under leadership of Makhado and his uncle, Khatelage or Katse-Katse. The fact that Makhado’s warriors were heavily armed with rifles previously used for hunting, did not help the town people.

Die landdros het dit in daardie stadium aan Grobler gestel dat Weskoppies nie ‘n hospitaal is waar hoofpyne behandel word nie, maar wel ‘n inrigting is waar geestes­ afwykings en sielkundige probleme behandel word. Sy wou weet waarom Grobler nie die probleem tydens sy vorige veroordelings geopper het nie, ‘n vraag wat Grobler nie kon antwoord nie. Safety around water remains a major concern Water safety While the country has been vigilant about the number of Covid-19 cases, another figure that has also been rising is the number of drownings in the country.

Sea Rescue, a charity that endeavours to save lives in SA waters, reports that more than 2 000 people die from drowning each year, 600 of these being children.

People who live away from the coast are also at risk of drowning and water safety should be uppermost in people’s minds. Sea Rescue offers the following advice:

Some advice around the home Consider those containers of stored, washing, or bath water. They could be a death trap to a curious toddler, who can fall in and drown, even in a few centimetres of water. It happens so quickly! Seal, empty, or place these containers out of the reach of children. Make sure you have all you need before bathing babies or young children; never leave them alone to fetch something elsewhere in the house.

Young children should always be within sight or hearing of an adult.

People who have swimming pools should ensure that gates to the pool are secure and nets are installed. Even children who can swim must be supervised.

Some advice around rivers and dams Collecting water and doing washing need not end in a fatality like it has done for some

others this year already! Be vigilant. Know where the people are that you came to the river or dam with; particularly young children, who can so quickly wander off. Constantly be aware of how safe you are by checking the water depth around you. Beware as rocks may be slippery.

A familiar river can become extremely dangerous when it is in flood. With the dirty water it becomes difficult to see where you are stepping. You could step into a hole, become unbalanced by stepping onto debris like fallen branches or slide on a slippery rock. The water also moves with so much force that you can very quickly be carried away.

Should anyone fall into the water, do not enter to try and rescue them. Too often a person drowns also when they are trying to save a friend. It is safer to rather use a stick that they can hold onto while you pull them out. You can also throw something for them to hold onto, such as an item of clothing or a towel. An item that floats, such as an empty, sealed plastic container works well too.

Know the emergency number, 112, and, where possible, learn CPR. It can save a life!
