It has been all smiles and great fun generally in the South African camp … it has been a very, very inspiring experience,” Sheryl told the Zoutpansberger in a WhatsApp voice note shortly after the final.

Sheryl is joined by parents Chris and Sandy James. Sandy had high praise for the organisers of the event. “Birmingham has gone to huge, huge lengths to host this ... incredible organisation. Festivals all over the city, huge TV screens with live streaming in city squares and various places, live bands, thousands of volunteers who stand everywhere you can imagine in the streets to assist and guide people - amazing!” she said.

Although not adding to South Africa’s medal tally, which stood at six gold, five silver and six bronze medals at the time of our going to press on Wednesday, this did not mean Sheryl’s participation at the Commonwealth Games was over.

“Vry.” Maar van daardie dag tot hede toe beteken dit slegs die vryheid om die paradys te verlaat, vryheid om weg te kruip van God en jouself, vryheid om jou eie lewe in ‘n strik vas te knoop. Dit is nie vryheid nie, maar slawerny. “Die loon van die sonde is die dood” (Romeine 6:23a).

Ons kan maar bely dat ons gesondig het, nie as gevolg van ander mense nie, maar deur ons eie keuse en deur gebrek aan liefde vir die hemelse Vader. Die verlore seun het opgestaan en na sy vader gegaan.

RAL, this is due to a necessary revised configuration on the N1 national road to enable work to be undertaken on the new off-ramps to Musina from Beitbridge while construction is also being completed on the tie-in of the new Ring Road into the existing N1 national road between the old R572 intersection, opposite the China Mall, and the temporary deviation 1.2km north of the R572 intersection.

According to Hennie Kotze, project engineer at SANRAL’s Northern Region, construction of these works is scheduled to take place from Thursday, 4 August, until Tuesday, 16 August, this year.

“Motorists using the N1 national road in both directions and other road users who wish to gain access to the R572 (to Alldays and Pontdrift) from the N1 national road will be affected.

Access to and from Elias Ramuthivheli Street to these routes will also be affected,” said Kotze.

Road users will be accommodated as follows (also refer to the attached figure): * From Musina along the N1 towards Beitbridge and the R572 With the N1 national road being permanently closed just north of the old R572 intersection, road users heading to Beitbridge and the R572 will follow the new R572 towards Alldays and Pontdrift, straight over the newly constructed Nancefield bridge.

Road users on their way to Beitbridge will turn right at the intersection after crossing the bridge and continue along the slip lane to merge with the deviation that leads onto the N1 national road. * From Beitbridge along the N1 towards the R572 and Musina With the N1 being closed off permanently at the temporary R572 intersection, road users will still be diverted gently to the right. Road users will continue along the deviation until the intersection with the new R572.

Those heading to Musina and the N1 national road will turn left at the intersection and continue over the newly constructed Nancefield bridge on the R572 until it merges with the N1 national road to Musina (opposite the China Mall). Road users heading for Pontdrift and Alldays will turn right and continue along the R572. * From R572 to Musina, Beitbridge and Elias Ramuthivheli Street From the R572 in the direction of Musina, motorists will continue along the newly constructed R572 until they reach the first intersec-

tion. After stopping, road users heading towards Beitbridge will turn left and continue down the on-ramp, which will merge with the deviation and eventually join the N1 national road.

Those heading to Musina will continue straight over the newly constructed Nancefield bridge and join the N1 national road opposite the China Mall.

Die gerief is onbeskryflik. Dit maak nie saak hoe koud die oostewind waai, of hoe hard dit reën nie (of albei), jy sit in die gerief van jou voertuig, druk net die knoppie en daar gaan die hek.

Maar jy het ook hierdie

uitgawe aangegaan in ‘n poging om jou eiendom verder te beveilig en kan die hek hierdie funksie verrig? Miskien ja, miskien nee.

In my eie geval was dit ‘n baie besliste nee! As die hek toe is en jy kan dit aan die motor se kant meer as 12 mm oplig, dan is die ratte ontkoppel en kan jy die hek “oop dra” so ver jy wil (Moenie jou rug beseer met hier­die toets nie, maar vra

liewer ‘n sterk man se hulp, want die hek is swaar).

Dit is waarskynlik die rede waarom voertuie vanuit ‘n “toe” perseel verdwyn en niemand kan dit verklaar nie, maar glo my, misdadigers wat in die nag beweeg, weet baie goed van hierdie moontlikheid.

Ek was geseënd om die tekortkoming self te ontdek en kon dit betyds reg dokter.

Minderjarige agter stuurwiel tydens tromp-op botsing Deur Karla van Zyl Die tromp-op botsing in Rissik­ straat wat op 31 Julie die Sondagoggend-rustigheid in Louis Trichardt versteur het, het oomblikke later tonge aan die gons gehad met beweringe dat die bestuurder wat verantwoordelik was vir die ongeluk minderjarig was en sonder ‘n bestuurslisensie bestuur het.

Die 52-jarige Christo Odendaal was om 09:30 op pad kerk toe en het vanaf die N1 in Rissikstraat afgedraai. Daardie oggend was hy gelukkig alleen in sy Nissan Navara.

Die volgende oomblik, het Odendaal Dinsdag in ‘n onderhoud met die Zoutpansberger gesê, het hy gesien hoe ‘n Toyota Hilux bakkie aan die verkeerde kant van die pad stroomop op hom afry. Met die besef dat die bakkie hom gaan tref, het Odendaal na die linkerbaan van die dubbelpad oorgegaan. Die aan­ komende Hilux het egter steeds na sy kant van die pad oorbeweeg en Odendaal het probeer om na regs uit te swaai. Die bestuurder van die Hilux het in daardie stadium blykbaar ook probeer om terug te swaai na sy baan en die twee bakkies het mekaar tromp-op getref voor Action Ford se ingang.

Beide bakkies se lugsakke het ontplooi. Die geweld van die impak was so erg dat die Navara se een voorwiel heeltemal afgeruk is, en die Hilux het met sy neus in die teenoorgestelde rigting tot stilstand gekom. Odendaal en die bestuurder van die ander voertuig was gelukkig om uit die wrakke te klim.

Geen teken van die seun kon by enige van die plaaslike hospitale gevind word nie. Hulle het toe na die ma van die seun, in wie se naam die Hilux geregistreer is, se huis gery. Daar aangekom, het Radzilane

Spay Day again makes huge impact Animal Care The SPCA Louis Trichardt once again held a very successful spay day on 27 July, with 22 dogs and five cats from surrounding rural areas being spayed or neutered.

“This may sound like an insignificant number to you, but when one makes a few calculations, the outcome has a far greater reach and effect than you can ever imagine. A female dog can have up to three litters of pups a year, and those litters can start having pups within six months,” said the SPCA’s Alicia Thomas. This means that these 27 animals could have produced hundreds of offspring in a very short period if left unspayed or unneutered.

who sponsored a spay or donated towards this project in any way, thank you! We would not be able to do it without you!” said Thomas. She also thanked the veterinary team for their contribution. “To the Limpopo CCS (Compulsory Community Service) Vets of 2022 – What a team! “It is the objective of the government to support the participation of all levels of sporting and recreational activities and to raise their profiles, getting the nation to participate in the facilities.

These proposed baselines will lead to discriminate and alienate our communities from each other and from the municipality,” said Smalle.

Smalle said that their role as municipality was not to make money out of the sports facilities as the municipality had no responsibility regarding the upkeep and maintenance of these clubs. “… therefore, it is the responsibility of this municipality to promote sports and recreation that will lead to a thriving community,” said Smalle. Regarding this, he added, the power to determine any rate or cost did not lie with any individual.

“That includes the acting municipal manager.

Those rights lie solely in the hands of the full council,” said Smalle.

Smalle said that the DA would not support the proposed recommendation and called for a deviation as they expected the case would be litigated by the affected parties. “…we will not stand [by] and see that the municipality pay for legal cost, but that the people who are taking the decisions are held responsible,” said Smalle.

Hulle benut ‘n wye verskeidenheid dat hy oor jare hulle aktiwiteite by verskeie neste van spesies as prooi en tot 60 verskillende prooi- in die area kon fotografeer. “Vir meer as 200 spesies is al aangeteken. Min is egter bekend uur het ek hierdie wonderlike voëls in die nag oor streeksverskille in hulle eetgewoontes en in waargeneem en gefotografeer. Hierdie was ‘n on2016 het Muller ‘n artikel in die African Birdlife gelooflike ervaring en het my siening oor uile en Magazine gepubliseer wat so ‘n ietsie van hulle dit wat ek gedink het ek van uile weet, heeltemal Omgewingsnuus

deurmekaargekrap,” sê Muller.

Uit sy waarneming van die neste en die uile se eetgewoontes het Muller gevind dat uile se stapelvoedsel duidelik hier in die Levubu area meestal uit motte en ander insekte sowel as slange bestaan en dat klein soogdiere (wat muise insluit) slegs ‘n baie klein deel van hul inname uitmaak. “Van die foto’s wat ek oor die jare geneem het, het ek ontleed en waar die prooi duidelik herkenbaar was, dit geklassifiseer,” sê Muller. Altesaam 187 foto’s is ontleed en dit het die volgende gewys:

Wat bogenoemde grafiek betref, het Muller gesê die persentasies word slegs bereken op die aantal prooi items. “As gewig in ag geneem sou word, sou die syfers natuurlik heel anders lyk, maar hulle voorkeure in ons area is nogtans duidelik,” sê Muller. In sy boek Birds of Prey of Southern Africa sê Peter Steyn dat die prooi van gevlekte ooruile hoofsaaklik uit insekte, klein soogdiere en voëls bestaan. In een ontleding van 1076 prooi rekords was 67% insekte, 17%

‘n Gevlekte ooruil, afgeneem deur Pietman Muller. Sy waarnemings van hierdie uile in die Levubu-omgewing het bevestig dat insekte, en nie muise soos baie sekerlik dink nie, 65% van hulle dieet uitmaak.

Zoutpansberger ‘n Fratsongeluk het hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede, ‘n donker skaduwee gewerp oor ‘n bedrywige jaarlikse Louis Trichardt Skou.

Veertien mense is beseer, sommige kritiek, nadat een van die swaaie in die pretpark omgeslaan het. Inwoner Niel Engelbrecht het ná die tyd vertel die swaai was nog besig om spoed op te bou toe hulle ‘n harde klapgeluid gehoor het. Die vermoede het bestaan dat die swaai gekantel het, nadat die vier pote waarop dit gestaan het vanaf een of twee houtblokke, wat gebruik is om die swaai waterpas te kry, geskuif het.

Niel-hulle is teen die reling vasgeslinger. In ‘n stadium, het hy gesê, het hy gehoor iemand skreeu dat die swaai afgeskakel moet word. Tog is hy en sy vriendin nog twee keer in die rondte teen die reling vasgegooi. Tydens die tweede ronde het hy sy bewussyn verloor. Toe hy weer bykom, het hy, sy vriendin en nog ‘n vriend tussen klomp ander mense op die grond gelê. Te midde van die tragedie was skougangers vol lof vir die onoortreflike wyse waarop die nooddienste beseerdes gestabiliseer en na verskeie hospitale afgevoer het.

In ander nuus daardie week is berig hoe die Hooggeregshof in Pretoria die aflegging van verskeie personeellede van die voormalige Venda Ontwikkelingskorporasie (voorheen Agriven) se landbou-afdeling tersyde gestel het.

Die werknemers is reeds in Maart 1994 ontslaan en was sedertdien in ‘n hofgeding betrokke. In ‘n gesament-

like verklaring meld die groep werkers dat die korporasie se landbou-afdeling reeds in Augustus 1993 besluit het om onder andere die dienste van Pieter Landman, Herman Smith, Carel Breytenbach, Willie Agenbacht en Jackie Smit te beëindig. Die hof het egter bevind dat vae en onaanvaarbare redes aan die werknemers verskaf is vir hulle aflegging en gelas dat hulle weer in diens geneem moes word, met herstel van hulle geldende voorwaardes.

“My waarnemings bevestig dan ook dat insekte, met ongeveer 65% van prooi items, hier by ons ook hulle vernaamste teiken is en dus ooreenstem met Steyn se data. Ek het egter baie min soogdiere en geen voëls aangeteken nie. Die feit dat slange tweede op die lys van voorkeure vir Levubu se gevlekte ooruile is, is nogal ietwat van ‘n verrassing en is nie eintlik in ander studies waargeneem nie. ‘n Buurman wat ook ‘n gevlekte ooruilpaar in sy tuin gehad het, het gesien hoe baie slange na die nes gebring word en my broer het ook een aand een langs die pad gesien met nogal ‘n groot kobra in sy kloue,” sê Muller.

Gevlekte ooruile in die Soutpansberg-omgewing broei vanaf Augustus tot November, met ‘n piek in September en Oktober. “As gevlekte ooruile dus in jou tuin of op jou plaas in die Levubu omgewing broei, en jy is bereid is om te help met hierdie studie, kontak my gerus. Mense uit ander areas wat betrokke wil raak by uilstudies van die ander uilsoorte, veral witwang-, skops-, gebande- en witkoluiltjies kan my gerus ook kontak. Neste moet in die nag toeganklik wees en ek en my toerusting moet veilig wees daar. Hoogtes van 4 m tot 5 m is nie ‘n probleem nie,” sê Muller. Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die

soogdiere en 14.5% voëls, met die klein balans wat bestaan het uit reptiele, amfibieë en vis. ‘n Opsomming van Muller se waarnemings in die Levubu area lyk soos volg:

Dit gaan voorwaar goed met die 48-jarige Jannie Bouwer van Louis Trichardt, tot so ‘n mate dat hy weer volstoom werksaam is in sy werkswinkeltjie waar hy grassnyers herstel.

Jannie se gesondheid het die afgelope paar maande maar bietjie wipplank gery. Die “plaat” wat oor sy 27-jaar-oue kopwond geplaas is het einde verlede jaar ‘n abses veroorsaak en moes verwyder word. ‘n Opvolgoperasie het op 1 April plaasgevind, maar die nuwe plaat het ook ‘n abses gevorm.

Telkens het Jannie se gesondheid dramaties verswak, maar elke keer het hy teruggeveg.

Op 11 Mei is die nuwe plaat, wat Jannie se brein teen ‘n gapende kopwond van ongeveer 2,5 cm by 13 cm moet beskerm, verwyder. Verder toetse het gewys dat die absesse veroorsaak word deur ‘n rare bakteriële infeksie in Jannie se skedel. Hy is toe vir ‘n periode van ses weke op medikasie gesit om die bakteriële infeksie op te klaar en as alles volgens plan verloop, sal Jannie ‘n nuwe plaat oor die kopwond vroeg volgende jaar kan ontvang. Die gaping is sy kop sal egter dan groter gemaak moet word, aangesien die gedeeltes van die skedel wat weens die infeksie beskadig is, weggesny moet word. Intussen moet hy homself maar mooi op pas.

Volgens Jannie se pa, Jan, is hulle absoluut oorweldig deur die ondersteuning en meelewing wat Jannie en hulle van die Louis Trichardt-gemeenskap ontvang. “Ons wil darem net vir die mense sê dit gaan baie goed met Jannie,” het Jan gesê.

Jannie self is ook nie iemand

vir lyf wegsteek nie. Nee, die Zoutpansberger het bietjie verlede week by hom gaan kuier waar hy werksaam is in sy klein werkswinkeltjie, besig om grassnyers te herstel.

Die eerste ding wat mens dadelik opmerk is die ou “pee-pot” valhelm wat hy dra.

Dit het eens behoort aan pa Jan, ‘n kranige motorfietsryer.

“Dit is maar belangrik vir hom om die brein te beskerm. Al beskerming wat hy tans het, is die kopvel,” het Jan gesê. “Dit is al frustrasie wat ek tans het, die ‘oop’ kopwond’,” het Jannie bygevoeg.

Jannie het vir hom ‘n redelik goeie besigheid gevestig wat die herstel van grassnyers betref.

Mense sal somes twee of drie stukkende masjiene daar aflaai om reggemaak te word. Sou dit egter goedkoper wees om ‘n nuwe masjien te koop, los hulle in baie gevalle sommer die ou masjien daar. Dan sal Jannie uit hierdie stukkende masjiene

parte en komponente ruil en ‘n “nuwe” masjien bou.

Die masjiene word heeltemal uitmekaar gehaal, reggemaak en selfs afgeskuur en oorgeverf, en Jannie wys met trots na die gelamineerde plakkaat van al die grassnyers wat hy al so opgebou het. Sy opgeboude petrolmasjiene verkoop hy vir tussen R800 en R1 200 en die elektriese masjiene vir rondom R800. “Hulle verkoop nogal goed,” het Jannie gesê. “Net nou die dag het ‘n ou weer vir hom gesê: ‘Jannie, daardie masjien wat ek drie jaar gelede by jou gekoop het, hardloop nou nog,” het pa Jan bygevoeg.

Jannie sê dit is nou bietjie stil, want in die wintermaande sny die mense nie so baie gras nie. In die somermaande lyk dinge darem bietjie beter en bou hy heelwat grassnyers op, maak hulle reg of diens hulle.

Die valhelm is vir beskerming, totdat hy vroeg volgende weer moet teruggaan hospitaal toe, sodat ‘n nuwe plaat oor sy kopwond ingeplant kan word. Tans beskerm net sy kopvel sy brein in die area van die 27-jaar-oue wond.

At 16:30, a men’s and women’s doubles match will be held and at 18:00 a sokkie/dance for all ages, followed by an auction and more Minute To Win It games from at 19:00.

Sigrid se foto van verlate treinstasie beslis die wenner Kompetisie

Fotograaf Sigrid Jefferies is die Zoutpansberger se wenner van hul kalenderfoto-kompetisie vir Julie met hierdie foto van die verlate Bandelierkop-treinstasie op ‘n onweersdag.

Louis Trichardt fotograaf Sigrid Jefferies se foto van ‘n verlate Bandelierkop-treinstasie met onweerswolke wat onheilspellend in die agtergrond op die horison saampak, is die Zoutpansberger se wenner vir Juliemaand se fotokalenderkompetisie.

Sigrid het die foto op 17 Julie geneem. Sy het die foto geneem met haar Canon EOS 80D met 24-70 mm Tamron lens teen 1/200 van ‘n sekonde op F7.1 op 100 ISO. Haar keuse van onderwerp, beslis iets uniek aan die Soutpansberg, en perfekte tydsberekening het die beoordelaars finaal oorreed.

Wat dit betref het die beoordelaars weereens die streeks se fotograwe versoek om te konsentreer op landmerke of natuurtonele wat uniek is aan die omgewing.

Die streek se fotograwe kan vanjaar regdeur die jaar maandeliks vir die koerant se kalenderfotokompetisie inskryf. Fotograwe sal tot en met die laaste week van elke maand hulle foto’s vir daardie maand kan inskryf en ‘n wenfoto sal vir elk van die 12 maande gekies word. ‘n Maksimum van vyf foto’s per fotograaf per maand kan ingestuur word, maar fotograwe kan vir meer as een maand inskryf. NB – Indien jou foto dalk een maand nie gewen het nie, maar jy voel dit is goed genoeg om weer in te skryf, kan dieselfde foto weer vir ‘n volgende maand

ingestuur word. Die foto moet egter binne die afgelope 24 maande geneem gewees het en moet die fotograaf se eie werk wees. ‘n Prys van R600 sal vir elke maand se wenfoto betaal word.

Elke maand se wenfoto sal in die eerste week van die daaropvolgende maand se Zoutpansberger gepu­bliseer word. Slegs hoë-resolusie digitale foto’s (verkieslik landskap-formaat) sal aanvaar word. Die foto’s kan in hoë resolusie per e-pos (een vir een, indien nodig) gestuur word, of op CD of geheuestokkie ingehandig word by die kantore van die Zoutpansberger te Joubertstraat 16B in Louis Trichardt. Elke inskrywing moet vergesel wees van die fotograaf se naam, kontakbesonderhede, waar die foto geneem is en met watter kamera dit geneem is. Selfoonfoto’s is ook toelaatbaar indien die foon oor ‘n goeie kamera beskik. Die kompetisie vir Julie het reeds begin.

Die 12 wenfoto’s sal aan die einde van die jaar in ‘n groot-formaat muurkalender vir 2023 saamgevat word. Die kalender sal dan onder meer deur die Zoutpansberger gebruik word vir bemarkingsdoeleindes.

We’re waiting for your entries Sadly, we did not receive any entries for the writer’s competition last week. We checked whether it was not perhaps a technical fault, but this was not the case. Our email system works fine, but nothing arrived in our inbox.

This is, of course, very problematic. Is the prize money not enough? (We can’t do much better, seeing that we’re sponsoring it ourselves.) Is the competition too difficult? Maybe it was simply a severe bout of writer’s block?

Be as it may, we have to do better. We know that we have talented writers in our midst, and they should have a platform where their work can be displayed. Last week the 16-year-old Anke Roos won the competition, which shows that you can’t be “too young” (or even too old) to enter.

Readers who are scared to enter because they doubt their writing abilities need not worry.

If your story line is good and it is well presented, we can work with it. It doesn’t need to be a linguistic masterpiece. We are more concerned about the story.

For those who do not yet know how the competition works: Every week, R1 000 has been earmarked for the reader who submits the best story. The competition is a first-of-its-kind in that it combines a travel story with unrelated individual adventures.

The weekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are

exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a five-day route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to offer.

The group of adventurers comprise 11 very diverse fictional travellers. The narrator is a young lady called Marelize. In every week’s edition, she talks about the route and what the group members have encountered.

Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip.

The group stop at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. The same happens at night, when the group members gather around the campfire and one person shares a story.

This is also the part where our readers need to contribute. The readers must use their imagination and write a story focusing on one of the characters. The theme of the competition is: “The night of the scars”. The idea is that each story will focus on a “scar” that the characters received somewhere in their lives. These can be physical scars, or they can be emotional scars.

Short profiles of the 11 characters are provided. In some cases, Marelize will expand on the characters when she discusses the route. Studying each character and building a story around their characteristics will be crucial.

We launched the competition by providing two examples of what the stories may look like. The first story was that

of Marelize. (You can read her story on our web page: www. zoutpansberger.co.za/marelize and follow the link.) The second one was a “demo” story, describing Rovha’s scar. (But Rovha’s character is still available for a story.)

The maximum length of an entry is 1 300 words. Once a character’s story is published, that “entry” is closed. If, for instance, you decided to write about Shabnim’s adventure and another writer’s story about Shabnim gets published, you need to move on to another character.

However, this also means that entries can have a longer shelf life. Readers are welcome to enter stories on all nine remaining characters. The entries will stay “live” until the judges have decided who the winner is regarding a specific character.

Judging starts at 13:00 on a Friday. That means that the entries received up to that point will be judged. If a story is entered about a specific character and that character does not feature in a specific week’s edition, the entry will stand over and becomes part of the “pool” of stories to be judged the following week. Only when a winning story about a specific adventurer is chosen, will the entries expire.

Apart from these guidelines, the normal rules apply. The (secret) judges’ decisions are final and they will not meet anyone in a bar later to discuss the matter. No staff member of the Zoutpansberger or their family members may enter.

Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most dangerous wilderness trails. It is said that he once disappeared along the infamous West Coast Trail in British Columbia. When he reappeared 14 days later, he had a nasty scar on his left shoulder and a haunted look in his eyes.

Lisa

Emma is an experienced journalist who is currently working for a local newspaper while dreaming of becoming a war photographer. At 37 she has won numerous awards for writing, as well as photography, but has never mastered the art of keeping direction.

She is constantly searching for that new adventure. Will she ever settle down?

Emma

Lisa (53) is the mother of two grown daughters and wife of the CEO of a successful Sandton-based Import/Export company. Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.

Marelize is one of the main characters in the adventure and also the narrator. She is 27 and originally from Namibia. She is a seasoned traveller and has visited countries in Europe and in the USA. She will not only describe the route being followed with its highlights, but also expand on her ten travel companions. It is important to follow closely what she says and build the characters accordingly. Marilize has a good sense of humour and willing to tackle whatever adventure awaits. She’s not that good with bike-riding and prefers walking trials.

Gerard is a Dutch adventure tourist. He ticks most of the boxes as far as stereotyping is concerned. He is slightly impatient and not discreet at all. He retired from the university where he was teaching a year ago and now at the age of 66 he spends his time travelling the world.

Rovha, the soft-spoken dentist, with the smiling eyes. He seems to be a loner, mostly travelling on his own. He has climbed Kilimanjaro and completed the Camino de Santiago. You will mostly find him sitting in a quiet sport reading a book or newspaper.

Shabnim’s small stature may be deceiving. She is a tough adventurer and even formed part of an expedition to Marion Island. She looks young, but at 42 she has seen a lot in life. She lectures at a local university and is well-respected in her field.

Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus finding himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe here he can find peace.

Lee (28) was born with a neurological disorder that inhibits the full use of here right leg and arm. She has, however, never allowed this inability to become a disability, living her life to the fullest and constantly challenging her body. Although physically strong, every now and then she shows signs of emotional weakness. She is not keen to talk about it, but something or someone has definitely left a scar.

Adrian

Adrian is a boisterous character who enjoys controlling the conversation. He is normally the one that likes to walk in the front, sharing his expertise freely with whoever wants to listen. He says he has travelled all over the world, but specifically likes the cold Russian climate. This most enjoyable travel experience was an epic snowmobile Journey in the Ural Mountains.

Takalani (Taki) (25) For the full-of-life Takalani, nursing has always been her calling. She is a vibrant, energetic young lady who’s infectious laugh can make any bad situation feel a little bit brighter. She is loved by all her collegues and patients. Although she has never done a hiking trail, she enjoys taking long walks in her spare time.

In totaal van 48 vliegtuie van onder meer Marble Hall, Pretoria, Brakpan, Groblersdal, Tzaneen Mokopane en Polokwane het vir die “kuier” ingevlieg, asook heelwat plaaslike boere met hulle helikopters.

Sedert Vrydagaand is lekker makietie gehou by die munisipale vliegveld buite Louis Trichardt. Verskeie stalletjies was beskikbaar, Dienkie en Doedels het die kinders vermaak en ‘n dans en lewendige vermaak is vir die groter mense aangebied, met kunstenaars wat ingesluit het Anton Myburgh, Louis Trichardt se eie Jacques Mouton en Willem van der Ryst.

Saterdag se hoogtepunt was die lugnavigasieresies (ANR), waar vlieëniers deur slegs ‘n kaart te gebruik en visuele observasie vanuit die vliegtuig na sekere punte moes vlieg binne ‘n bepaalde area (korridor) teen tyd - tot groot vermaak van die besoekers.

Jaco Wepener en Floris Prinsloo het namens die Soutpansberg Vliegklub almal bedank wat op welke wyse ook al ‘n bydrae gelewer het tot die naweek se sukses. Dit sluit in die groot hoeveelheid besoekers, plaaslik sowel as van elders. Hulle wou niemand spesifiek uitsonder nie, aangesien hulle bang was hulle los iemand se naam uit, maar hulle het tog ‘n spesiale woord van dank gerig aan Iaan Myburgh wat die ANR hanteer het en die naweek se veiligheidsoffisier, Nigel Musgrave. “Die idee is om dit weer volgende jaar aan te bied, maar heelwat groter.
