Bemused community members of Makonde village converged in large numbers after learning about the death of their beloved traditional leader.

Chief Ravhura and younger brother commits suicide “Mativha o xa ...” King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana has described the shocking death of Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura (49) and his younger brother, Lindelani Godfrey Ravhura (43), as a great loss to the Vhavenda kingdom.

Without leaving a note, Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura committed suicide by hanging himself in the storeroom of his palace at Makonde village, north of Thohoyandou, on Wednesday last week. The chief’s lifeless body was discovered by his eight-year-old son, Tshinetise, hanging from the rafters of the storeroom.

After hearing the sad news of the passing away of the chief, his younger brother, Lindelani Godfrey Ravhura, told close family members that he could not cope with the death of his beloved brother.

Moments later he also hanged himself from a mango tree at his home in Maraxwe village, just a few kilometres from Makonde, where the chief had hung himself.

What people seem to find strange about these deaths is that it is not the first time that this royal house has had to cope with deaths of this nature.

Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura’s father, Tshinetise Ravhura, who was also a chief, committed suicide by hanging himself from a guava tree in 1961. The mother of the same chief who hanged himself last week, Mmboneni Ravhura, also died mysteriously in the sixties after being struck by lightning.

be recognized by the Nhlapo Commission as the most senior traditional leader of all the Vhavenda.

He argued that the Ravhura royal house had kept quiet for more than 230 years and it was time for them to reclaim their glory. Unfortunately, his claim for the Venda kingship was dismissed by the commission.

For many years, under the traditional leadership of the Ravhuras, the village of Makonde commanded high respect as it was well known as a place visited periodically by Nwali (Raluvhimba), the supreme god of the Vhavenda. The historic cave of Raluvhimba (bako la Raluvhimba) where Musethegwa Magwabeni interpreted for Chief Ravhura when Nwali visited Makonde is also a trademark of the Makonde village.

His humour, loving smile, community development interest and selfless passion for the poor will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His royal palace was always a shelter for those who did not have enough to provide for themselves. Over the years, he had made countless donations to charities and spent much of his hardearned cash to develop his community.

The chief seemed undisturbed when he addressed a community gathering two days before his untimely death. Almost as if he was saying goodbye, he stressed that the community should always be united and work hard to fight poverty and underdevelopment.

Matsa child care opens a new centre Joy and happiness abounded when caretakers and beneficiaries convened at Matsa Children Resource Centre to launch the newly built structure on Friday last week.

The centre's new building was started in 2010 with financial assistance from the Centre for the Positive Care (CPC) in

According to the Matsa Children Resource Centre's manager, Ms Elinah Musingadi, the CPC generated funds for all the material needed to complete a multi-purpose hall, two offices and a library., but there was no money to pay the builders, so community members who possessed building expertise were roped in and the structure was finally completed in August this year.

"Eskom also donated R14 000 for the purpose of wiring the place and electricity activation," said Ms Musingadi.

"We thank them because we wouldn't have gone this far without their help."

Matsa Children Resource Centre cares for 158 children, who are between 0 and 18 years of age. These children are orphans and vulnerable children who come to the centre after school. The centre engages them in cultural and sports activities such as soccer, malende dance, and also helps them with

their home-based school work.

Matsa Children Resource Centre started with only 46 children in a small house at an old clinic in 2003.

Deputy manager of education for Nzhelele West Circuit Mr Steven Ravele indicated that the Bill of Rights stated clearly that everyone had a right to education. "Structures such as Matsa care centre help to ignite a sense of self-confidence in children who are classified as orphans and vulnerable children," Ravele said.

The centre is facing challenges such as a lack of water, food and toilets. "We've written many requests to the Makhado Municipality to bring us water in tanks, like they do for the local schools, but no response has been given to us," said Ms Musingadi.

Rofhiwa Rudzani (17) is one of the youths who continues to benefit from the centre and she says that she has learnt a lot after she joined the centre in 2007.

Young man dies in car accident The Levubu police opened a case of culpable homicide after a 21-year-old man died in a car accident a fortnight ago (21 September).

According to the spokesperson for the Levubu police, W/O Solly

Mukhola, a 30-year-old male and his three passengers were driving along the Elim/Vuwani road at about 23:00. The driver had allegedly lost control of the Polo classic sedan and hit a tree at the side of the road. The car

was badly damaged and the tree uprooted.

W/O Mukhola said the young man died instantly and that the police had opened a case of culpable homicide against the driver.

Double blow for Makonde’s residents Continues from p1 After hearing the shocking news of the death of their muchloved chief, the community of Makonde, who looked like sheep without a shepherd, gathered at the local church premises to map the way forward and plan on how they can assist to make sure that their chief gets a decent send-off. During the meeting, it was agreed that each household should contribute R20 while all businesses within the village are contributing R200 each. All the local churches also agreed to contribute R100 each. A period of mourning was declared during the meeting.

Condolences have kbeen coming from all corners of the country. King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana sent a delegation to the chief’s palace.

He said it is unfortunate that he had lost one of his most trusted senior traditional leaders unexpectedly. “The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or touched but are felt in the heart. We will always remember Chief Ravhura for all the good things he did during his lifetime. I know everyone is seriously hurt by this incident, but life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass - it’s about learning to dance in the rain. This means

that we must be focused and continue where this legend has left off. If we have been pleased with life, we should not be displeased with death, since it comes from the hand of the same Master. We will forever mourn him.”

Although it is against the Vhavenda culture to announce publicly when a chief will be laid to rest, the funeral arrangements for both Chief Azwianewi David Mutshinyalo Ravhura and his younger brother were at an advanced stage at the time of going to press. At the same time, the police were also finalizing their investigations into the two cases.

Warrior King Makhado gets honoured “This town is not renamed just after another person, but it is named after a brave warrior who fought bitterly to defend his people and their land … Makhado led his people from the front and always understood the importance of remaining vigilant against enemy invasion. He was a good strategist who possessed unique qualities of leadership.

Without any formal military training, he commanded his regiment wisely and carefully."

This was part of the keynote address delivered by Limpopo's premier, Cassel Mathale, during Saturday's function to introduce the new name for the town officially.

“He (Makhado) was a true organic intellectual who led his people with humility and intelligence. He was advanced in terms of thinking and planning.

He had passion to forge relations with other traditional leaders, for he was interested in the unity of the indigenous people of this country. Our generation must be proud of leaders like Makhado, who knew nothing except to fight for his people. He had the ability to accommodate other people and respect their rights to practice their culture, in particular minority groups

that were under his authority,” said Premier Mathale.

This last sentence was in stark contrast with what a previous speaker had said in his memorial lecture on the late warrior King Makhado. Chief Masakona reiterated more than once how Makhado “reduced the flourishing town of Schoemansdal to ashes and forced the whites to evacuate.”

Mathale said that the fact that they had respected the decision of the court which had ruled against the first resolution to rename the town from Louis Trichardt to Makhado was a living testimony to how they valued court judgments.

The Chairpersons Association, who was responsible for the appeal to get the first renaming set aside, warned before the name-change launch that the event was premature, since the CA has six months to take the second renaming to court on review. The CA described the event as a waste of taxpayers’ money.

Mathale said that the process of change was costly and no man could stand in the way of change.

“The renaming of certain places, including streets, is an important programme that cannot be delayed or frustrated by financial arguments,” he said.

Even though Saturday's parade from the Makhado Municipality to the information centre started an hour late, the rest of the programme flowed smoothly.

The attendance appeared a bit top heavy, with not quite so many ordinary people in attendance. Dignitaries included the newly inaugurated Vhavenda King, Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale, MECs, and the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshititereke Matibe, as well as the Makhado mayor, Cllr David Muthavatsindi. Guests in the VIP tent numbered close to 200 and guests seated in the other marquee tents close to 500.

The cost of the name-change launch was estimated by some to be in the order of R250 000. The Makhado Municipality could not give a figure this week. “The cost has not yet been consolidated and some of the items were sourced through donations,” said the municipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi.

DA Cllr Brian du Plooy wanted to know where the event had been budgeted for and he described it as “unbudgeted expenditure”. “How can you celebrate the name change when an appeal is hanging?” Du Plooy asked.

Premier Mathale told the Mirror that the celebration was not premature because the name change had been promulgated.

“The name is Makhado. We have a democratic constitution, and therefore it is their right to apply for a review to put the name aside. But remember, In the middle is the newly inaugurated Vhavenda King, Vho- we also have constitutional Toni Mphepu Ramabulana, and to his right is Limpopo Premier rights and we will appeal right Cassel Mathale. Murder accused to go for observation

A 32-year-old man appeared in the Hlanganani Regional Court on a case of murder which occurred on 18 May last year. Godfrey Munzhedzi-Nemushuri's case was postponed to 6 November for the accused to undergo mental observation.

Munzhedzi-Nemushuri is being accused of allegedly murdering a 20-year-old Grade12 learner, Mikateko Mathonsi, who was stabbed and killed on election day last year at Njakanjaka village near Bungeni.

As reported in this paper last year (Limpopo Mirror, 27 May 2011), the two were seen quarreling in the street before the suspect allegedly stabbed Mathonsi in the chest. She later died at the Bungeni Health Centre.

It appeared that the accused had apparently failed to cooperate with his legal representative, Adv Sikutshi. “He's been rude towards me all along when I told him to instruct me on issues of his bail application,” said Adv Sikutshi during the court appearance on Monday. The attorney explained that he had no other option but to recuse himself from representing Munzhedzi-Nemushuri.

Members of the Young Communist League (Mayibuye branch) and Congress of South African Students (Cosas) came in large numbers to protest against the possible release of the accused from police custody. “We will continue to show our unwavering support to the young woman's family,” said Bavi Shivuri, chairperson of the Young Communist League.

“Mikateko was an inspirational force in the youth movement. We feel she should have been around and not dead.”

The accused complained to the court that he was suffering from asthma and a doctor had recommended that the jail cell environment was not helping his health status in any manner. “I've got medical proof here with me,” he said, clutching an asthma spray-pump in one hand.

Zimbabwean rapist sentenced to eleven life terms in jail There was a deafening silence in the Hlanganani Regional Court in Waterval when a serial rapist, Moses Hungwe (26), made his appearance on Monday this week.

Hungwe was finally sentenced to 11 life sentences on 11 charges of rape. The rape charges against him were initially 20, but the court had to withdraw at least nine charges because no witnesses or complainants had come forward to testify against the accused. The victims’ ages ranged from 15 to 83 years, said the court.

Magistrate NC Mthombeni ruled out the argument given by the accused’s lawyer, Mr Muhanelwa, as unrealistic in relation to the circumstances surrounding the case against Hungwe.

Mr Muhanelwa had argued that Hungwe had had Moses Hungwe contemplates his impending consensual sexual intercourse with the women, who later reported him to the police; he called the judgement on Monday.

The court further indicated that it was unlikely that all the women could lie about Hungwe’s raping them, considering the fact that several mobile phones belonging to some of the complainants were found in the accused’s possession during his arrest.

DNA samples retrieved at the crime scenes or from some of the victims had matched the samples taken from Hungwe.

“It cannot be accepted that consensual sex had been engaged in between the accused person and the complainants,” said Magistrate Mthombeni.

“Why is it that he chose his spots - the bushes, vegetation fields - and at uncommon hours of the day? All the complainants also denied ever knowing Hungwe before the rape incidents.”

The state prosecutor described the accused’s behaviour as “animalistic” when weighing up the

brutality he had used in assaulting some of the victims during the rape incidents. The accused’s lawyer appealed to the court to sentence Hungwe to a 10-year jail term on each of the 11 counts and further requested that the sentences run concurrently. The application was refused vehemently.

“There’s no society in the world who would allow their mothers, sisters, daughters and wives to be sexually molested when they are on their own,” stated Mr Mthombeni upon sentencing Hungwe.

The court then declared him unfit to possess a firearm and his name was entered into the national register of sexual offenders.

During the trial, it was heard that the rape incidents took place between 2007 and 2011 in different places, such as Mashamba, Bungeni, Mufeba and Mukondeni. Hungwe is originally a Zimbabwean national who was staying at Chavani village and Hlanganani township before his arrest.

One senior victim, who refused to be named, mocked the accused after his sentencing. “You’ll rape better in jail now,” she said, pointing a mocking finger at him.

No bail for suspect Alfred Lishi (40) of Mawoni Nzhelele, who had allegedly chopped his girlfriend to death with a panga on 20 September, appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate court last Wednesday.

His case was postponed to 5 November for a bail application. The suspect was let out on parole earlier this year. It was reported that the suspect was visiting his girl friend, the late Rofhiwa Mathavha, when the incident happened. It appeared that the two had differences which led them to quarrel before the incident. It was further alleged that the suspect refused to accept that the girl no longer wanted him in her life.

On the day of the incident the neighbours went to deceased lady’s house to investigate after they saw the suspect running away. They found the doors open, but the smell of blood was coming from the house. The neighbours then decided to call on the community for help.

The lifeless body of the deceased was found tied up with a rope next to the bed. The suspect was released on parole from jail earlier this year after he had been sentenced to 18 years for murdering his wife in 2002. Rofhiwa was buried last Saturday in an emotional funeral at Mavhunga village cemetery.

Khashane’s murder case postponed A 36-year-old man appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's Court in connection with a murder case on Monday, 17 September. This was his second appearance in court after he had first appeared on 16 August.

Mr Mashudu Khashane is alleged to have killed Mr Frans Mudimeli (40) in what appears to be a love triangle, on the evening of 12 August. The two men had apparently been fighting over a woman, known only as Joyce. The police were alerted after Mudimeli had passed away, and they found the deceased covered in a blanket, with visible injuries to his head. He had allegedly been hit to death with a stick.

According to the deceased's family, Mudimeli had gone out to fetch the keys to his home, which he shared with his mother, Vho-Masindi Munzhedzi (73), and Joyce. The keys were with Joyce. As to how it came about that the deceased and Khashane eventually fought in the latter's yard is unknown at this stage.

The incident, which has left the community baffled, happened in the Tshikhwani section of Madombidzha village. Meanwhile, community

members who witnessed the killing and spoke only on condition of anonymity, said that Khashane and the deceased's fight started as a result of paternity issues. The woman is allegedly pregnant.

The case was postponed to 30 October for further investigation.

Police maintained their presence at the looted tavern at Phiphidi on Saturday.

Four arrested for Mvelaphanda robbery The Vuwani police have arrested four suspects in connection with a business robbery which took place at a local shop at Mvelaphanda village on 20 September.

Khutso Ramalesa (20), Jeffrey Moake (27), Meshack Makamu (22), and Vincent Ramethoka (28) appeared before the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on 25 and 30 September and their case was postponed to 3 October for further investigation and the possibility of lodging formal bail applications.

It is alleged that the accused had attacked a 25-year-old businessman inside his shop

and stabbed him in the head, arm, chest and back. The victim screamed for help, but the men allegedly pushed him to the floor, whereafter they fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of airtime vouchers and R200 cash.

The businessman was left bleeding profusely.

Some members of the community noted that things were not all right in the shop, so they came over and allegedly managed to apprehend Khutso Ramalesa.

When the police finally arrived, they found that Ramalesa had been beaten severely by the community members. He had also sustained facial injuries.

The police investigation led to the arrest of other three suspects at Matoks near Polokwane.

The spokesperson for the Vuwani police, W/O Elijah Malatjie, said that the police were investigating the possibility that the suspects were connected to other crimes which had happened in the area.

“The suspects normally travel all the way from Capricorn Municipality to terrorise our communities,” he said. “We're not sure if this was their first attempt at robbing the businesses in our policing area.”

All the accused remain in custody.

Angry villagers at Phiphidi went on the rampage on Saturday, barricading the main road from Nzhelele at a crossroad junction between Duthuni and Phiphidi and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

The protestors, who put rocks and old car scraps in the road, also looted and burnt a tavern belonging to a local man. They attempted to bomb a house owned by the businessman, but luckily it did not explode.

Police helped the family remove the remaining stock of liquor from the tavern. Around the tavern, many youngsters, most of whom were visibly intoxicated, were seen milling around the area. Two drunken young men were involved in a streetfight. Some others joined in and it seemed that things

would get more out of hand, but everything quietened down.

The residents accuse the local businessman of orchestrating murders in the area and claim that all the murders and rapes that had taken place in the village had been planned at the tavern. The latest murder was that of 27-year-old Jabulani Raphalalani, whose naked body was found in a local tea plantation last week Saturday.

The body was allegedly found in a pool of blood by two foreign nationals who were going to do piece jobs in the morning.

Two men have since been arrested in connection with the murders, but police say that they could not link the murder to the businessman as there was no evidence to that effect. In recent times, the community of Duthuni outside Thohoyandou

Watch out for job recruitment scams One of the victims who had allegedly been robbed of R4 500 in exchange for a decent job is warning members of the public not to fall for the fraudulent scheme.

This comes after a victim from Tshakhuma, who asked not to be named for fear of her safety, came to the fore to explain her misfortune. “People should not become a victim of what I’ve been through while I was desperately looking for a better job.

Mashudu Sylvia Rambau (30) from Vyeboom appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court last week on charges of theft under false pretences.

The case was postponed to October 17.

Rambau allegedly claimed to be a highly qualified employee of Spoornet who was connected to the employers of the company, and who had the authority to employ people. She allegedly told job seekers that she was a train driver; and that she drove trains from Polokwane to Musina She then allegedly took CVs and a payment estimated to be around R5 500 to reserve employment space. It was also established that she had used two different names.

King Makhado Project to help fight against poverty Ibuso Holdings launched the King Makhado Project to help people, mostly youths from disadvantaged communities, to alleviate poverty and to honour the king of Venda, Khosi-Khulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana.

The project was launched last week Tuesday at Makhado, and more than 30 people were trained and exposed to the operations of the company.

Ibuso Holdings is a group of companies specialising in employee and member benefits, with the focus on

wellness and wealth creation through advanced data-management systems. The company is currently recruiting people, mostly from the Nzhelele area. They have already taken in 32 people - two people from each village. All those who have joined the project immediately get benefits from the company, which include money for transport and lunch.

Lovemore Tshivhula, a community representative, applauded the company for initiating the project. He said that the project would provide unemployed people with skills that would provide them with employable opportunities.

Justice Radzuma, the project manager, said that the aim of the project was to create jobs for the people of the Khosi-Khulu. He said that almost 60 people would be hired by the company. “Employees will be the company’s agents, recruiting people, collecting a database of members of the communities, to see how many needy people could be assisted,” he said. He added that the company was devoted to working with the public. They would create co-operatives and attract investors to invest in the area and continue to co-operate with the public.

“It is high time that all concerned parties - parents, communities, public servants and politicians join hands to ensure that children with disabilities have the same opportunities as other children,” said Cllr John Mamafha during the celebration of Casual Day at Tshilwavhusiku Special School last Friday.

Mamafha said that all parents had a responsibility to look after their children, irrespective of whether they were born in or out of wedlock. “As we take stock of the overall performance of the government, we must also check whether we are doing enough as government to address the challenges of people with disabilities. We must send a clear message out there that people with disabilities are as human and productive as everyone else in society. Disabled people, like all members of society, have the right to human rights and dignity.”

Mamafha said that as the municipality they wanted to create an awareness about the situation of disbaled people and challenged persons, and the people who take care of them.

Lutendo Mahangwahaya spoke on behalf of children with disabilities.

“We are here to tell the municipality to build accessible routes to buildings for people who use crutches and wheelchairs. We are appealing to our

parents not to hide us just because we are disabled. Some parents do not even want to take us to church because their friends will laugh at them. This is not good for us. They look at our crutches and not at us as ordinary kids.”

Vhamusanda Vho-Piet Ramabulana urged the community not to push these people away. “We have this kind of event because we want to show disabled and challenged people that we love and accept them in our houses and community.” He urged parents to stop abusing these people and to stop using them as sources of income. He said that the disability grants should be used in the way they were intended.

The principal of the school, Mufunwa Ramutshila, indicated that a shortage of classrooms was the main challenge that they were facing, as they have only four classrooms catering for more than 150 learners.

Parents of the school voiced their opinions regarding the teachers at the school. “The teachers are not just teachers, but also social workers at the same time. They are really doing an excellent job. Gone are those days when people used to chain their children at home because they have disabilities. Let them come and learn with others, because they have potential like all other children.”

Bail denied for six suspects in ritual murder case

Murder suspect hangs himself A 29-year-old man from Mberengwa village outside Beit Bridge, who was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, committed suicide while in detention at the local police cells.

The suspect, Leejoy Siyayi Walker Zimusi of Mberengwa, who had been on the run after allegedly murdering his wife, Charity Moyo, following a domestic dispute, was arrested in Musina last week.

The local police spokesperson, Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo, confirmed the incident, which occurred on Wednesday last week at around 06:00.

“We received a tip-off that the suspect was hiding in Musina and we arrested him with the assistance of our South African counterparts. We then detained him at our cells, together with 10 other suspects,' he said.

Chinhengo said: “Zimusi was detained in the cell with other inmates until the following morning, when the other suspects were screened and released and he was left alone in the cell. However, when one of our officers went into the cell, intending to conduct a routine clean-up, he found the lifeless body of Zimusi with a string tied around his neck,” Chinhengo said.

The body was ferried to a local hospital for a post mortem.

Kodani Sioga and Monica Hlanhwani were dressed to kill during the matric dance of Tshikhuthula High at Kennington Lodge a fortnight ago.

According to the police, Zimusi had a longstanding dispute with his wife, Moyo, whom he accused of indulging in extra-marital affairs. On 13 September, Zimusi axed his wife to death and fled to South Africa, where he sought refuge until his arrest last week.

For about four hours, the magistrate, State prosecutor and defence lawyer appearing for six men accused of a ritual murder were locked in a heated argument as the men's bail application hearing continued in the Zoutpansberg Magistrate's Court in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on Wednesday, 19 September.

The bail application for the six accused was denied.

The six men who stand accused on a charge of ritual murder are Frans Madzivhe (54), David Mnisi (27), Meshack Mkhwanadzi (20), Reynie Abraal (31), Meshack Malange (21) and Shadrack Malange (21). The alleged ritual killing took place at Mununzu Farm outside Elim on 16 May, 2012, when the accused allegedly removed Mr Phillip Bendzani's genitals before setting him alight.

The State witness and investigating officer in this case, Capt Rodney Ndou, testified in detail how the accused had finally been linked to the case and arrested.

Ndou indicated that accused number 3 (Mkhwanadzi) had allegedly confessed to community members in the street, without having been intimidated or asked to do so, and that Madzivhe was the one who had come up with the whole scheme to kill Bendzani because the deceased had been stealing conjugal pleasures with two of Madzivhe's wives.

Capt Ndou further reminded the court that the wrath of the community would fall on the six men if they were to be released on bail.

“The angry community burnt Madzivhe's property,” he said. “They also instructed the father of the twins (Shadrack and Meshack) to demolish a shack that he had built for them in his yard, which he duly did.”

Ndou added that he had begged the community not to burn the shack belonging to Mkhwanadzi's mother because she had had nothing to do with the killing. According to the investigating officer, the twin brothers' father had also had enough of them after they had abused him physically many times.

Ndou added that preliminary DNA tests taken from the Parabelum shoes found in Abraal's ceiling, the front part of Bendzani's bloodied underwear, and bloodied carrier bags had already connected the six accused to the case of ritual murder, but that the court would have to wait for the final

DNA results.

The defence lawyer from the Makhado Legal Aid board, Mr Manuel Kwinda, used the expression “minor case” to describe the case when compared to other Schedule 6 cases. He was, however, warned sternly not to use the expression again. The State said that the expression antagonised the family of the deceased and the affected community.

It was further heard that in cases classified under Schedule 6, as the Criminal Procedure Act commentary states, the onus lies with the applicant to prove that their bail application's reasons and circumstances are exceptional. “The six accused before this court gave nothing exceptional,” said

the court. “Mr Mkhwanadzi even continues to intimidate and threaten the witnesses through the prison's public phone. From what Capt Ndou has said, this court is totally convinced that the State has a very good case against the six accused. The bail application is therefore denied.”

Community members from the Elim area expressed their joy at the outcome of the bail application. “By denying the murderers bail, the court saved us from going to jail,” said the community.

The case was postponed to 26 October for further investigation and the director of public prosecution to consider the case for a trial in the High Court.

“Someone else lives in my RDP house” A Musina woman is unable to move into her RDP house, because she claims it was illegally given to another person.

Shonisani Makhubele said that she had applied for the house at the Musina Municipality in 2008. The house was allocated to her and registered in her name.

Since 2008, housing allocation in the Musina Municipality has been marred by allegations of corruption and fraud involving municipal officials who sell RDP houses to unsuspecting and desperate families for between R1 000 and R4 000.

The area has subsequently become flooded by illegal occupants at the expense of desperate beneficiaries. Limpopo Mirror has also learnt that some of the houses have been put up for rent.

“Apparently, there are residents who have illegally occupied some of the RDP houses that were vacant, and the rightful owners need the illegal occupants to vacate the

premises,” Makhubele said.

Makhubele stated that she had been approached by a woman who worked at the municipality to bring R1 700 after she had been given a key, but a day later she was told to bring back the key as the wrong key had apparently been issued to her. She reported the matter to the municipality in 2009 and called for a hearing with the woman who had phoned her. This, however, did not solve her problem.

Makhubele said that she would call the municipal offices to enquire about her house and would be told that it had not yet been built. Makhubele indicated that records showed that a house had already been allocated to her, and that the municipality was under the impression that she had occupied the house. “I then went out to search for the house, using the number allocated to me. I was shocked to discover that someone already occupied the house,” she

said. She said that efforts to have the municipality intervene drew a blank, and she was sent from pillar to post, without anyone assisting her. Makhubele, who works as a street vendor, says “I still cannot understand why I’m being made to suffer while my house exists.”

Ms Eunice Mashaba, the person who is currently living in the disputed RDP house, told Limpopo Mirror that the municipality gave the house to her two years ago. “I don’t deny being in illegal ownership of this house, but my question is this: When we are taken out of these houses by the municipality, where are we going to be placed?” Asked if they had purchased the houses, Mashaba said that no money had changed hands. She claims that they were given the houses free of charge.

“Some of the houses were dilapidated and we renovated them,” she said. She said that she did not have a problem leaving the house if she was not the legal owner, but she just wanted to be placed in a new home because she had been on the RDP waiting list for more than seven years.

Increase in suicides a cause of concern The Sinthumule/Kutama communities have expressed shock at the escalating cases of teenage suicides in the area.

On Sunday it was announced that 10 cases of child suicide had occurred within the last four months. Last Wednesday, a Grade 11 boy at Manaledzi Secondary School was found hanging from the roof at his home at Tshiozwi in what has also been described as a suicide.

In the Manavhela village in the Kutama area, a young boy who was committing suicide was saved by the community after they found him hanging from a tree. The community cut the rope and, at the time of going to press, the boy was fighting for his life

at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

The chairperson of Sanco in the Vhembe area, Vhamusanda Vho- Ntanganedzeni Kutama, said that the incident had brought sadness and plunged the family and community into deep mourning. He said that the latest episode had taken the families and community by surprise and left them in a state of shock.

“We need answers here. Something, somewhere did not go right, and we believe that there is more to this hanging than is apparent at face value. We just feel that somewhere, somehow, somebody is hiding the truth and this is hurting the community,” he said. The deaths have left the

community devastated. Kutama appealed to churches from the different areas to pray for the on-going problem of suicide in the area.

Apostle Alpheus Mudau of True Christian Worshippers Centre said that the suicides were a result of demonic spirits which needed to be exorcised.

“All churches must pray for that, in order to cast out the demons before they can kill many innocent people,” he said. Mudau said that as the church, they had to go to schools and communities to speak to the young people. “If young people have a problem, they should approach pastors who will assist with prayers,” he said.

The Vhembe District Municipality recently started with a project to turn around the effects of globalization by teaching young children the importance of their culture.

The chairperson of Early Childhood Development (ECD) in the area, Ms Tirhani Florence Sambo, said language, dress and traditions were also significant variations in the way societies organised themselves to preserve their culture and tradition.

“We will be able to preserve our culture if we pass it on to our young children, as they are the next generation and the leaders in years to come.

Pandor said the government had invested large sums of money into helping to upgrade infra-

structure at Univen since 2007 and proportionately more had been earmarked for those institutions that had not yet had a research legacy.

“We strongly applaud Univen for doing well in positioning itself as a rural university with a specific research profile. With the dawn of democracy in 1994 and new leadership at the helm, Univen has embarked on a process of transformation.

It shifted its focus to science and technology and introduced new programmes that encouraged an increase in student enrolment in the natural and applied sciences,” said Pandor.

4. Add the vegetables and stir fry for 2-3 minutes.

6. Add the pineapples chunks and sauce. Stir well.

7. Finish with the chicken, season and serve.

Musina police on trail of rape suspect The SAPS at Musina are investigating a case of rape after a 45-year-old male had allegedly raped a 40-year-old woman on Saturday night, 22 September.

The police said that the victim was at her home at around 22:30.

The suspect phoned and told her to come out to open the door for him.

The woman refused to open the door, so the suspect used an iron bar to break open the door and gain entry into her room. He

then forced the victim outside of the room and pulled her towards the nearby bushes, where he raped her.

“After raping the woman, the suspect ran away,” said Lt Peter Mudau, spokesperson for the Musina police.

“We hope to make an arrest soon.” According to the information provided by the police, the victim had a court order against the suspect.

In another case which happened in Musina, a 27-year-old

male was walking in town when two men approached and robbed him at gunpoint of R50, a pair of shoes and a mobile phone on the evening of 13 September. Musina police spokesperson Lt Peter Mudau said that one of the suspects is known to the complainant and, according to the victim, the suspect is a Zimbabwean national who has been staying in Musina for some time. “We’ve opened a case of armed robbery and we’re tracing the suspects in this case,” said Lt Mudau.

Boreholes run dry at Beit Bridge village Villagers at Tshitulipasi village outside Beit Bridge are facing a serious water shortage and they have now resorted to sharing unhygienic water with animals.

Limpopo Mirror recently visited the area and villagers who spoke to this paper confirmed the latest development. “We have been using the Tshamatema Dam for drinking water for the past three months, following the breakdown of several boreholes servicing the village. The dam

water that we are now drinking is dirty, and in some cases you find animal carcasses floating in water,” said Mr Rudzani Mbedzi, a local villager. Another villager, Mr Samuel Muleya, said: “Most of our boreholes are not functioning, forcing a majority of villagers to fetch water from the local dam for domestic use, while others walk long distances to neighbouring villages in search of water. We are appealing to the authorities and NGOs to help rehabilitate the

boreholes,” he said.

The local ward councillor, Mr Enock Mbedzi, said they had since approached some partners over the matter. “We are also appealing to the District Development Fund and NGOs to drill more boreholes, because the existing ones are no longer working properly.

We hope the problem will soon be addressed as we are still trying to engage some partners to help us rehabilitate the boreholes,” he said.

illnesses. According to available statistics, at least one in every four persons will be affected by mental disorders during their lives. Munonde added that they would be campaigning and hosting information meetings in a number of communities throughout the area, where officials of the department would meet with traditional leaders, healers and youth organisations.

The guest speaker, Mr Tshililo Makhwanya, the co-ordinator of Mental Health Vhembe, said that his department had heard of many cases where the grants for mentally ill patients were not being used for the purposes of taking care of their physical and emotional needs. “People take those grants and buy clothes and groceries for themselves, which they do not share, nor do they pay their instalments.

The result is that the true beneficiary walks around almost naked, barefooted, dirty and hungry, without a proper place to sleep,” Makhwanya said.

He stated that his department would co-operate with traditional leaders in treating mentally ill patients.

He said that he valued the importance of the communities and traditional council working together with the department of health to better the lives of these patients. “We can’t do it all on our own,” said Makhwanya. “We need the community to get involved as well.”

The Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Collins Chabane, said the implementation of the proposed one-stop border post at Beit Bridge was long overdue. He added that delays in the clearance of travellers was a major cause for concern as it affected trade and investment within the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

“Beit Bridge Border Post is the busiest border post in the SADC region, hence the need to address the issue of congestion by setting up a one-stop border. Delays at Beit Bridge border hinder trade and affect the economics of the two countries, including others in the region whose goods pass through this port of entry,” he added.

According to Chabane, the governments of the two countries have failed travellers, exporters and importers through delays “and therefore we are saying there is a need to unlock trade opportunities through the speedy implementation of the one-stop border post,” he said.

Stokvels and clubs in Vhembe received an added boost when a workshop was held to empower them and to help them run these operations in an effective way. In a move that many believe would herald a new era in stokvels and clubs in Vhembe, women from all over Vhembe spent the whole of Saturday together, attending empowering sessions.

During the workshop, women received motivational talks from celebrities like Maumela Mahuwa, who is well known as Vho-Suzan in Muvhango. Mahuwa also entertained guests with her unique style of music from the album ECHO, on which she was a guest star, as well as some songs from her soon-to-be-released album.

Gospel star Rofhiwa also gave a splendid performance during the workshop. Lucky women who attended the event went home smiling with prizes such as rice, bags, and other items.

A fashion parade was also held during the workshop. One of the coordinators, Ms Busi Skenjana, a stokvel expert and also the editor of a stokvel magazine, Stokvel Voice, said there were many stokvels and clubs in the country, but most of them were not run in an effective way. “We are here to educate and encourage women not to wait for others but to do things themselves. Women can fight poverty and ease the scourge of unemployment in the country,” said Skenjana.

Skenjana, who has a very big passion for stokvels, said women could change their stokvels from the traditional burial schemes to moneyspinning ventures. “We would like to share with them the information that they need and we want encourage them to work as teams and to support each other always,” she said. the gathering was the first of its kind and that they intended hosting more of such workshops in the region. “We are greatly encouraged by what we have seen here. This is our first time here, but women came in their numbers, even though they were invited at the last minute. We hope the coming one will be better than this one,” she said.

Speaking during the workshop, singer and actor Maumela Mahuwa urged women to have a positive attitude in whatever they do. She urged women not to waste their time on useless things like gossip but to direct their energies toward empowering each other by saving through stokvels.

“A woman who is thoughtful is a special being who can change her family and this world around through stokvels,” she added. One of the women who attended, Agnes Tshipangana of the Mavu Women’s Club in Duthuni, said that they were highly motivated and empowered.

“When we are working alone, we just think we are doing things the right way, but what we have learnt here will go a long way in making us effective in running our clubs. We just wish that more and more such workshops be held in this area. We have learnt a lot as women and I just hope it will change the faces of our stokvels,” she said.

Farm labourer now a doctor of agriculture Former farm labourer turned successful farmer Mr Jameson Nesane (70) said that he was humbled by the honorary doctorate that was conferred on him by the University of Venda.

The humble man, who has been farming for more than 40 years, has finally been honoured for his contribution towards economic development and the improvement of agriculture in the country.

Nesane, whose story is a typical rags-to-riches story, was awarded an honorary doctor’s degree in agriculture by the University of Venda over the weekend. He was one of the more than 600 hardworking students who received diplomas, certificates and degrees during the university’s spring graduation ceremony.

After having the doctorate conferred on him, Nesane said that years ago, when he received his highest qualification, which was a standard-five certificate, he had never in his wildest dreams imagined that one day he would be honoured in this manner, or that he would be dressed in scarlet.

He dedicated the honour to all who are in the agricultural sector: “Whatever the title, an award not only honours the recipient, but it also honours and raises the profile of the profession, charity or sports in which a person has excelled.

Today, I receive this honour on behalf of all agriculturists in the world, from subsistence farmers who are feeding their families, to large farms, whose endeavor

is to feed and nurture the world, and to agricultural scientists who research and innovate new ways of applying agriculture sustainably, from teachers, lecturers and professors in agriculture who impact knowledge, to newcomers to the industry.”

Despite his lack of formal education, Nesane went on to excel in his business and has won several awards. He developed an interest in agriculture when he was employed as a farm labourer in 1952. Due to his hard work and dedication, he was later promoted to farm supervisor, without any formal education or training. Upon promotion, his salary was raised from a measly 25 cents per month (as farm labourer) to R2.00 per month as farm supervisor. In 1960, Nesane abandoned the farm life and migrated to Johannesburg in search of greener pastures.

He worked in Johannesburg for seven years before coming back home, where he started off using the chief’s field.

He later acquired a 10-hectare plot where he started his farming business. In 1986, he requested more land from the local traditional leader and he was richly blessed when the then paramount chief of Venda, Patrick Mphephu, allocated him a 30-hectare farm, which he named Tshatala.

Several black farmers were also allocated land with him, but out of all the farmers, he is the only one left and he is pro-

gressing tremendously. He has expanded his farm to 470 hectares and specializes in the large-scale production of tomatoes, pumpkins, watermelons, gem squashes and beans. Besides his business, Nesane ‘s contribution spreads to the community. He established partnerships with Madzivhandila College and Dimani Agricultural School and students from there receive practical training at his farm. His mentoring reach is widespread. He has mentored farmers from far-off places such as Ladysmith, Bela Bela, Phalaborwa and Giyani, besides the many neighbouring farms in the Mutale and Vhembe District municipalities. His farming business also serves as a source of employment for local communities and he currently employs 200 permanent farm workers and about 300 seasonal workers annually.

City learners spend time at Nthabalala

Hardworking and successful farmer Jameson Nesane, who was awarded a doctorate degree in agriculture by the University of Venda at the weekend.

Learners from a Gauteng school spent a whole week in a rural area during the the first week of September, when they visited their Limpopo counterparts to share some common challenges. According to Ms Angel Raphalalani from Thusanani Outreach proramme, the visit was part of an initiative to help promote a culture of learning.

“We want to explore ways to improve on education in all areas;” Raphalalani said. She

also held a presentation on the system of rural schools, saying that poor monitoring and lack of co-ordination between parents and departments continued to be a major challenge in rural schools.

Raphalalani added that it was a significant opportunity for private schools to show their commitment to skills development in critical areas.

She concluded that the programme helped to provide learners with a platform to reach their

potential.

“There are learners out there in the rural areas who are hungry for education and have the skills, but do not have the means to reach their full potential. That is what we provide,” she said.

“We carefully select recruits, who are placed full-time in well-resourced, quality, independent schools, where they become fully involved in the life of these schools while being mentored by top teachers,” said Raphalalani.

Makonde Forum celebrates Heritage Day Despite two cultural functions’ being held in one village, the Makonde Education Forum organised a very successful Heritage Day function on Monday last week.

The function, which was attended by the senior traditional leader of the village, Thovhele Ravhura, his chiefs and businesspeople, was held at the local Jim Masindi Primary School.

Just across the street, Phalaphala FM and the Vhembe District Municipality were hosting a similar event - a move which was heavily criticised by

community leaders as dividing the community.

The chairperson of the forum, Dr Tshililo Alidzulwi, said that as agents for development in the village, they had identified heritage as an area that needed attention. “People have forgotten their roots and the youth are the main culprits. They have adopted alien cultures which make them look down on their own culture.

“We need to remind them that a nation without culture is lost and does not know where it is going. They do not have a

future,” he said.

According to him, they have decided to start with a traditional dance competition. He said it was the first of its kind in the village and they were satisfied that community members had heeded their call and had come in their numbers.

“We are very happy about the outcome. It shows that people are serious about their culture.

The nation should not forget about this and this is our duty as we encourage education in the village,” he added.

Mukula Mighty Killers deposited full points into their account, following a 3-1 victory over Mukoma Young Stars in their Thulamela Local Football Association League match played at the Mukula Phindula grounds on Saturday.

Young Stars lost cohesion in the midfield in the opening minutes. This was a real blessing to the home side. They capitalized on the setback and scored two beautiful goals in quick succession.

Mpho Musehane was on target in the 14th minute.

Phumudzo Nenweli dribbled past two of Stars’ defenders and faced the keeper. Instead of beating the keeper, Nenweli chose to share his fortune with Musehane, who was in a perfect scoring position.

Musehane gave the ball the final touch.

The Killers’ goal did not mean anything to the Stars as they continued to display their individual skills instead of playing as a team. They were severely punished for that. Mpho Musehane forced his way through the defence of Young Stars and unleashed a ground cutter from close range to complete his brace.

This goal was a wake-up call to Young Stars, though it was a little late. They reduced the margin nine minutes towards half time. Their bulldozer striker, Meshack Kone, beat the keeper, following his lone effort within the Killers’ danger area.

Young Stars’ hopes of winningwere shattered when they were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute. Tenda Nemavhola was given his marching orders following a dangerous tackle on Calvin Ramashidzha. The Stars started to play defensive football after the incident.

Beware of scams offering “cheap” deals Vehicle hunters should be extremely cautious of auction notices offering bank-repossessed vehicles at attractively low prices – usually also with no deposits needed.

An alarmed Limpopo resident contacted the Zoutpansberger/ Mirror this week to seek help after apparently having been taken in by unscrupulous operators of a scam which first surfaced in the province during the first half of last year.

The person, whose name is being withheld for obvious reasons, reacted to a pamphlet which he found during a visit to Pretoria in July this year. In the name of an auctioneering firm, fairly new bank-repossessed vehicles are being offered for taking over of instalments at attractively low prices. He was interested in two bakkies. After telephonic negotiations, he was first requested to send money for license and registration fees and later, after a delay “to prepare the contract”, he was contacted for delivery costs. He spent R3 260 on the two

vehicles of his choice. Deliveries would start at the beginning of September.

After the latest contact, he was promised he would receive his cars in seven to 14 days.

This never happened. Now repeated calls to the number are answered by voicemail. Suspecting that something was amiss, he searched the Internet and landed on the website of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror.

A similar experience was reported by yet another visitor to Zoutnet’s website. He said he had recently reacted to an advertisement by “Radebe-Kruger & Partners (Pty) Ltd” In March last year, the Zoutpansberger/Mirror reported on an advertisement pamphlet by “Fisher-Radebe & Partners Auctions (Pty) Ltd” who gave their official address as 83 Pine Street in Musina. A “client” from another province, who had also already paid “license and registration and delivery fees”, made the trip to Musina to have a look at his bargain-priced, to-be-delivered vehicle, only to

find that no such address exists in Musina. The CIPRO (Company and Intellectual Properties Registration Office) also had no record of such a company. The advertisement on the pamphlet was in open contravention of the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) directive that “Advertisements by brokers offering to arrange instalment take-overs or delegations, without the written consent of the financial institution involved, will not be permitted. Advertisers wishing to offer such services will be required to provide proof that such consent has been given…”

Although “no deposits” are needed, pre-payment of R350 “for license and registration” and R850 for “delivery nationwide” is required. To be approved as a buyer, the pamphlet says, you are required to send an SMS with your name, surname, ID number, address, place of work, type of car that you want and further contact details. The only contact number on the pamphlet is a cell phone number.

Adv Matlou appears in regional court A 47-year-old Limpopo advocate appeared before the Sibasa Regional Court on 25 September in connection with a case of fraud.

Adv Erick Matlou’s case was

postponed to 9 October. This time around the case against Matlou has been moved from the Sibasa Regional Court to the Soutpansberg Regional Court in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The top advocate was arrested on 17 August after he had allegedly defrauded a local businessman of about R215 000. Matlou, who owns a law firm, allegedly promised the businessman two stands, the value of which he said were R500 000.

The businessman is said to have paid R215 000 as a deposit for the stands.

The complainant in the case alleges that he became suspicious and investigated the land which was supposed to be his, whereafter he established that the land was not for sale.

Matlou was arrested by the Hawks in Limpopo.

Duties: Under the direct supervision of the Project Coordinator, the individual would be required to transport field workers and study participants as required for clinical surveillance, dietary and cognitive surveys and collection of biological samples.

Requirements: The position requires an individual who can work within a team, respects timelines and punctuality. It is once again time for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calendar photo competition.

The region’s photographers will have until 31 October to submit their entries. Prize money totalling R6 000 is up for grabs, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months.

Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2013 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Only high-resolution photos of subjects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition.

Wildlife photos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape.

he Congress of the People (COPE) in Vhembe welcomes the name change of Louis Trichardt town to Makhado.

This has been long overdue. As we sit and witness the events and ceremony organized for the name change, very worrying issues comes into the picture.

Yes, we can change the name of the town, but the big question is after we have changed the name, do we uphold the image of the town as a sign of honour and integrity, or do we continue to reduce the standard of the town to a peri-urban town?

The government of the day has a responsibility to manage the public funds in a productive manner as well as a further responsibility of giving essential services to the people of the newly named

“We need services, not expensive drinking and dancing” Makhado Town and the surrounding townships and villages.

As COPE we are not in support of the way in which the Makhado Municipality is making its priorities.

How can the municipality spend huge amounts of money on parties and celebrations, while they are failing to make funds available for essential service equipment?

People need water, good roads, electricity and graded soccer fields for our youth, not parties that

are being held one after another.

COPE has discovered that the ruling party acts very fast when it comes to approving funds for a celebratory party and acts very slowly or does nothing at all when it comes to issues of service delivery.

For the celebration of the name change, the municipality hired nine catering companies. People ate, drank and danced, but thereafter the same

people will be going back to their homes driving on very bad and dilapidated roads.

They arrive home and fail to bath because there is no water.

The municipality must start to employ the funds of Makhado on issues that matter the most.

Leopards must beat Supersport United Black Leopards must beat Supersport United when they meet in their Absa Premiership League encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday in order to keep their hopes of completing their league programme in the top four.

Still fresh from a goalless draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium last Saturday, Leopards are still to lose a league match at home this season. Leopards have collected seven points so far, while Supersport are just a point above them. The last time the two teams met was when Leopards beat Supersport 1-0 at

the Giyani Stadium towards the end of last season.

In the other Absa Premiership League match that will also be played on Sunday, the University of Pretoria will host Orlando Pirates at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.

Amatuks are going in for the kill after crushing Ajax Cape Town 5-1 at the Cape Town Stadium last Saturday.

Busy weekend for Thulamela teams The past weekend was another busy one for the teams playing under the banner of the Thulamela Local Football Association.

Khumbe Real Rovers scored two early goals and conceded one against Itsani Double Chiefs at the Itsani grounds on Sunday.

Miluwani Happy Boys maintained their happiness by beating Sibasa All Stars 2-1 at the Miluwani grounds.

Although they were the first to find the net, Ngovhela XI Experience suffered a 2-4 defeat at the hands of Matondoni Home Sweepers.

Tshambobvu Junior Aces shared the glory with Dzingahe Peace Makers with whom they drew 1-1. Tshivhungululu Hungry Vultures were the hardest hit.

Tigers maintain their unbeaten record Mashawana Young Tigers maintained their unbeaten record when they crushed Khumbe FC 2-0 in their Thulamela Local Football Association League match at the Khumbe grounds on Sunday. Sunday’s victory was the seventh for Young Tigers in a row. The Tigers’ fast forward, Rofhiwa Mulaudzi, scored a brace in the game.

The victory did not come cheaply as Khumbe were more organised in the middle of the park, with their strikers trying their luck from inside and outside the box, in vain.

Rofhiwa Mulaudzi made his presence felt in the 13th minute. He received a beautiful pass from Michael Tshibvumo within the box and unleashed a rocket. The keeper of Khumbe, Thanyani Sithambandou, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net.

Khumbe did not stop fighting after the Tigers’ goal. They regrouped from behind and continued to create some dangerous moves as they approached the opponents’ territory. Realizing that Khumbe were unstoppable, Young Tigers packed themselves at the far back and relied on counterattacks.

Sibanda wins Two Countries marathon A Zimbabwean athlete, Nkosiyazi Sibanda, won the annual two countries marathon from Zimbabwe to South Africa (Musina) on Saturday morning. The race was delayed by almost two hours, and instead of starting at 06:00, the race only got underway at 07:55.

Sibanda finished the closely contested marathon in a time of 2:24:36. Michael Ngaseke, also from Zimbabwe, finished the 42,2 kilometre route just three minutes behind him in 2:27:39. Ngaseke has previously won the Land of Legend marathon, in 2009. The third position went to the local man, Bethuel Netshifhefhe of Nedbank Athletics Club, who finished in 2:31:26. The female category was won by Jane Mudau of Nedbank Athletics Club in a time of 3:24:42.

The 21,1km race was won by Kelvin Pangiso of Mr Price Athletic Club, in a very good time of 1:05:16. Samuel Pazanga, from the same club, finished second in 1:06:32, and Marshal Jaji of Nedbank Athletics Club finished the race in third position. All three athletes are Zimbabweans. The masters category was won by well-known runner Thomas Ngobeni of the Greater Elim Athletics Club. Vhamusanda Vho-Ntshavheni Nenguda ended the race in second position. The grandmaster category was won by Elias Hlungwane of

Malamulele Athletics Club. In the ladies category, the first position belonged to Olivia Chitachi of Nedbank Athletics Club. Hellen Chiundu of Mr Price Athletics Club finished second, and the third position went to the up-and-coming runner, Portia Mudau of Mvudi Athletics Club.

The 10km race's female category was won by Cynthia Baloyi. She was followed by Florance Rambuda of Mvudi Athletics Club, and Melody Ndou finished third in this category. The winner of 10km race in the male category was Charles Mukwevho. In the disabilities category 10km race, Rona-Lee Johannse and Anadie Oosthuizen ended the race in a tie.

The mayor of Musina Municipality, Carol Phiri, said that they would improve the race next year. She appealed to the athletes to apply for their passports. Only 28 runners participated this year, because they allowed only runners who had passports. In previous years they made arrangements with the border post officials to allow all the athletes to pass through without passports.

Benny’s Care Academy won their protest when they lodged a complaint alleging that Kabelo High had fielded an over-age player during the Metropolitan SASFA U/16 tournament that was played last month at Mahwelereng Stadium.

The South African School Football Association (SASFA) has confirmed that Kabelo Secondary School was disqualified after they were found guilty of fielding an over-age player during the recent Metropolitan tournament. Last Friday, the South African Football Association (SAFA) Appeals Board upheld the decision by the disciplinary committee (DC) which had found Kabelo Secondary School guilty. Subsequently, the school that was supposed to represent Limpopo in Durban has been disqualified. Vhembe District’s Benny’s Care Academy and Hudson Ntsanwisi High School will now be carrying the province’s hopes in the National Met-

ropolitan SASFA U/16 championships, which kicked off on Wednesday.

Limpopo SASFA president Hulisani Mabasa said that Kabelo Secondary School had literally disqualified themselves after they refused to comply with the instructions of the set task team, the DC and the SAFA Appeals Board. “First the task team visited the school and the school did not make the boy available to the team. Then the DC instructed that the boy should be taken to the Department of Home Affairs for verification, but instead of complying, Kabelo Secondary opted to appeal the decision. When the appeals board came up with the same instruction, the school still did not want to comply.

“If you have nothing to hide, why not make the boy available and have his age verified at Home Affairs, the only place where ages can be verified through the checking of fingerprints?” asked Mabasa.

Asked what sanctions had been handed down to the school, Mabasa said that the provincial SASFA committee would have a meeting this week and decide on the sanctions. “The matter of sending the legitimate school to the nationals was urgent as time had already run out. The DC and appeal board was to look at evidence provided and make a decision on who goes and who remains behind, and the sanctions will be discussed provincially,” added Mabasa.
