Taps running dry for days have become a common occurrence in Louis Trichardt, and when water does start to run, residents emit a sigh

But what if dark, smelly water runs out of the tap? And what if you report such an incident to the municipality and they do not bother to respond? Where do you go to get help during such hectic times?

A resident at Flamboyant Street, Mr David Mudau, was in his house when his daughter informed him that the taps in the kitchen were not running, shortly after the water had come back on in the area. “I went to check,” he said.

“I opened taps in the bathrooms, and the water seemingly struggled to flow, but after some time, air shot out of the tap like a blast, followed by the thick, black water. An overwhelming odour instantly filled my house from that water. I was so shocked.”

His 5 000-litre tank outside the house rapidly started to fill, but with the same dirty water. “I quickly went outdoors and opened all the taps, so that the pipes might be flushed of all the smelly black liquids, but after 40 minutes the dirty water was still running.”

Mudau reported the problem to the municipality but was left shocked and angry because the municipality did not respond. “The matter

was not treated as urgent,” he said. “My major concern is the municipality’s failure to respond to the reported sewage contamination in our water pipes. It is sad that our municipality does not care. Something is totally wrong there within the municipality. I have emptied almost 5 000 litres from the tank. I just have to find a way to clean the geysers. The problem is that when the water is restored, the sewer dirt will still be left in the tanks.”

However, not only one household was affected. Just about all the houses along Flamboyant Street, from the corner of Meerkat Street, suffered the same fate.

Residents felt that the municipality should have alerted the entire area about the incident and provided a tanker in the meantime. “Why didn’t they inform us immediately before we and our children could drink the water? They thought no one would find out,” said another resident. “You can’t even allow your livestock to drink this kind of water.”

When Mudau attempted to contact the municipality again, they admitted that the problem was serious and promised to come out and clean his tanks. “The promise was never fulfilled,” he said on Friday. “I waited the whole day for the municipality to come and clean the pipes and my tank, but nothing happened.”

However, a message, purportedly authored by the Vhembe District Municipality’s manager, Ms Sylvia Ndou, was circulated among “colleagues” after Louis Trichardt resident Cllr Brian Du Plooy had communicated with the municipality shortly after his visit to the problem site. Videos

On Friday afternoon, Limpopo Mirror visited the site where the mixing of the system supplying effluent and the water-supply line had allegedly taken place. When our reporter arrived at the site, he introduced himself to contract workers and requested to take pictures of the damaged site. The workers, however, responded by threatening him with violence and even confiscated his camera phone, threatening to smash it. A monitoring official, probably from the municipality, intervened and warned the men not to smash the journalist’s camera phone, but to rather hand it back because the journalist was doing his job.

Cllr Brian Du Plooy said that he had visited the site earlier. “I accompanied a municipality official and we

visited the site,” he said. Du Plooy realised that the contractor on site had messed up, allowing raw sewage to flow into the water-supply system.

“We got the district municipality to intervene, and we had a meeting on the site. As far as I know, they cleaned up the system, even though it was not the same day,” said Du Plooy.

Du Plooy was critical of the service rendered by the district municipality, saying it should not be left to a neighbouring ward councillor to identify such problems. “How many people could have got sick? So far, we do not have any casualties, but this is a very serious incident. We need to handle it like that, for a lot of people could have been hurt.”

A detailed media inquiry was sent to spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai of Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) who said that he had forwarded it to the technical department for comments.

He was also requested to confirm whether the WhatsApp message circulated among “colleagues” had indeed been authored by Ndou (municipal manager).

On Wednesday he replied, admitting that one of VDM’s sub-contractors was actually

responsible for the mess and not a private contractor laying fibre lines. “The municipality does not deal with fibre cable.

We really need to correct the initial statement that the contractor was busy with fibre cable,” he said. Ralushai said that the VDM’s technical department had urgently assembled a team to address the problem and Cllr Martha Babadu and Cllr Du Plooy were invited to monitor the operation.

“The contractor involved was also called to redress the mistakes and he did as required. The municipality is evaluating the report and concentrating on the redress of the issue and will attend to the contractor’s mistake internally, in line with the relevant pieces of legislation,” Ralushai said.

On Wednesday, another resident, who was away when the sewage ran through the water pipeline, said that when he returned on Tuesday, he found that the entire water-supply system in his home had blocked up. “We reported the matter to the municipality, but they are not responding,” he said. “How are we going to live in this town with a dormant municipality? Is this a way of life?”

Police hunting a gang of robbers

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Limpopo police are on the hunt for a group of armed robbers who have been terrorising communities in the Vhembe area.

A group of unknown armed suspects created havoc the past week with a spate of armed robberies, hijackings and kidnapping in areas such as Bandelierkop, Waterval, Tshitale and Malamulele.

The provincial commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba, has established a dedicated team of members from various units to track down what they believe is a criminal syndicate.

Last Wednesday, two cases of carjacking and kidnapping were reported at Njhakanjhaka village along the R578 public road in the Waterval policing area. Three suspects robbed two victims at gunpoint of their

money and cellphones. The victims were dropped off in the nearby bushes before the robbers drove away with their motor vehicles.

In a separate incident, still in the Waterval policing area, the same three suspects hijacked two different couples at separate places. They took them to the bushes and gang-raped the women in front of their partners. Both men were then shot before the suspects fled the scene.

In the Malamulele policing area, several incidents were reported where cars were hijacked and spaza shops were robbed. Three hijacked cars were later recovered by the police. The suspects were wearing face covers and spoke isiZulu, mixed with a bit of Xitsonga.

The police have appealed to members of the public to come forward with information that might lead to the arrest of

A community member, Mr Samuel Muredi, said that criminals had taken control of the area, once considered to be one of the safest places to live in the country. He said people were now living in fear, wondering who would be next to be robbed. “We are not safe at all here,” he said.

Family left homeless after house burns to ashes

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Muzila family of Tshikhwani in the Sinthumule area was left homeless after their eight-room house burnt to ashes last Wednesday night. One suspect has been arrested on a charge of arson.

The fire broke out during a period when no-one was in the house. Community members expressed their suspicions that the fire may have been set deliberately. “We don´t know what the cause of the fire was, but it seems as if someone had entered and set the house on fire,” said the owner of the house, Mr Bethuel Muzila.

He said that the fire brigade

responded very quickly, but the fire had unfortunately already caused severe damage.

“The neighbours told us that they had heard an explosion, followed by a fire,” he said. He added that the fridge, kitchen unit, beds, TV, money, clothes, ID, food, and furniture had been destroyed by the fire. Everything inside the house was burnt to ashes. The fire also damaged the roof and the walls of the house.

“I’m happy to be alive, although I’m highly disturbed by the incident. I think these are jealous people who believe in primitive ways of solving problems. I believe they will never escape the long arm of the law as they will never escape with-

out being punished,” he said.

He estimates the damage at approximately R600 000.

For the time being, the homeless family members are staying with relatives. A plea was made to community members and the business sector to assist the family with building material to rebuild the house.

“I want to repair the house, but it seems as if it will be difficult,” said Muzila.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident. He said an arson docket had been opened and a suspect, Tshamano Muzila (25), had been arrested. He appeared in court last Friday and his case was postponed.

Comedian SABC Livhu spends the weekend in jail

By Maanda Bele Popular comedian and socialite Livhuwani Madadzhe (31) spent the weekend in jail. He was arrested on Saturday for allegedly driving with illegal flashing lights and not stopping when confronted by law enforcers.

“Captain SABC”, as Madadzhe describes himself, was arrested on Saturday for contravention of the National Road Traffic Act. In a statement, Limpopo SAPS spokesperson Col Moatshe Ngoepe said that traffic officials were busy conducting their daily duties at Mphephu drive when they spotted a silver Audi A4 motor vehicle without number plates. The vehicle had flashing emergency lights and was blocking the road while apparently escorting certain vehicles.

The traffic officers apparently tried to stop Madadzhe’s car, but “the driver didn’t stop; instead, he drove at high speed towards Thavhani Mall”, said Ngoepe. Police back-up was summoned, and the suspect’s car was stopped at Thavhani Mall.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver did not have a driver’s licence in his possession as he failed to

produce it. The vehicle’s licence disk had expired,” said Ngoepe.

Madadzhe was arrested on the spot and had to wait until Tuesday morning before he could appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court. When he eventually made a quick appearance, the case was postponed to 8 December this year. He was released on bail of R1 500.

When Limpopo Mirror contacted Madadzhe for comment on Tuesday, his assistant said he could not be reached.

They promised to reply once he was available.

In the police’s statement, Col Ngoepe warns that driving around with emergency lights on their vehicles is illegal for ordinary citizens.

What does the law say about flashing lights?

The use of identification lights is regulated by Regulation 176 and Regulation 185 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2000.

Vehicle identification lights can be used in the following manner:

BLUE LIGHTS Blue light may only be fitted on vehicles operated by: Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Municipal Police Services; Traffic officers and members of the SANDF Military Police.

Mother and daughters go missing

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The police in Thohoyandou have launched a search operation to locate a 38-year-old woman, Ms Lucy Rambevha, and her three daughters, Rotakala (17), Mulweli (14), and Rolivhuwa (8), who allegedly went missing from Thohoyandou Block E last week Friday.

The preliminary police investigations indicate that the mother had earlier argued with her husband, who is working in Polokwane. The husband told the police that when he arrived from work, nobody was there to welcome him home.

In addition, a grey Mazda 3 vehicle belonging to the woman is also missing. Efforts to locate the missing persons were conducted at families and friends, but without success. The mother and daughters’ cellphones are on voicemail.

Mapungubwe Africa festival set to become an annual event in Musina

Mapungubwe Africa, a non-profit organisation whose aim is to perform cultural arts in Musina and abroad, organised the event. The festival was supposed to have made its first mark last year, but because of logistical problems had to be scheduled for March 2020. As a result of the Covid-19 lockdown, the festival was postponed to October 31.

According to Chomie, such cultural festivals should not only be held during heritage month.

“It is high time that we embrace our culture and our natural environment, as this defines who we are,” she said, leaving the crowd calling for more entertainment.

This is the first event of its kind in Musina.

Freedom Boikanyo, one of the directors, said this was going to be an annual event in Musina.

Boikanyo has a history of working in the arts and cultural sector. He is also the provincial coordinator of the Cultural Creative Industry Federation of South Africa.

“I have learnt from the number of people who gathered that Musina residents love this event. I believe this is going to be an annual event where we share our cultural heritage and remind ourselves who we are,” said Boikanyo.

The event was attended by groups such as the Golden Girls (senior citizens) choir from Musina. Learners from different schools in Musina also performed cultural dances such as Xibelani, Mmino waSetho and Tshigombela.

During week three of the special operations (ending on 19 October), the police arrested 1 925 suspects for crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, robbery, possession of illicit cigarettes, contravention of the Immigration Act, possession of drugs (nyaope and dagga), rape, sexual assault, assault GBH, to burglary residential and business, stock theft, illegal mining, drug-related crime, driving under the influence of liquor, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, illegal trading in liquor and the carrying of a dangerous weapon. Five vehicles, as well as 22 illegal firearms, were also recovered, while 47 shebeens were closed own.

As for the police’s successes the past week (as well as for the rest of the month of October), provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has praised all police members for their immeasurable commitment in eliminating crime across the province. The positive and meaningful results produced by these arrests are a clear indication that the police are leaving criminals little room to manoeuvre.

ANC branch not involved in Lotto funded project, says Cllr Sithi

By Anton van Zyl Enoch Sithi, Makhado Municipality’s Ward 12 councillor, responded this week to criticism about the Hangwani Mulaudzi project in Mukondeni village, saying that they had monitored the project carefully to ensure that the local community benefited to the maximum.

Cllr Sithi explained that he is not involved in the Hangwani Mulaudzi Foundation, the non-profit organisation that received R3 million from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) to build a sports field at Mukondeni village. The foundation is headed by the spokesperson for the Hawks, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi. The foundation has since changed its name to the Bono Foundation.

Sithi served as an ex-officio member of the project’s steering committee. Members of the steering committee were elected from the local community and they are Mbulani Mufamadi, R Mashamba, Ndivhudza Tshavhubwa, Reginald Thangoane and Mafanato Mukhari.

According to Sithi, this forms part of his responsibilities as ward councillor. In Ward 12, he oversees nine villages. He said that the steering committee’s members were not involved in the funding process, and merely assisted with the logistics, which included identifying a site where the sport facility was to be built.

The project made national headlines a few weeks ago when calls were made that the project be investigated. A member of parliament, the Democratic Alliance’s Mat Cuthbert, described it as a conflict of interest. He said that law-enforcement agencies were currently investigating the NLC for serious irregularities and possible large-scale corruption. He called for Mulaudzi to be suspended and the grant to be investigated.

During interviews, Brig Mulaudzi denied that he had any knowledge of investigations by the Hawks into NLC grants. He also maintained that his role was to communicate information about the Hawks’ activities and that he merely passed on what was provided to him.

Mulaudzi’s foundation received the R3 million grant in July last year but work only started around June this year. During an interview on 24 June, Mulaudzi told Limpopo Mirror that the project had been delayed because he first had to engage the Mashamba village leadership and members of the community to obtain land where the facility could be built. This process was concluded in September 2019 and the project could commence. However, construction was badly affected by the Covid-19 lockdown period, he said.

On Monday, Cllr Sithi said that his role as councillor was to ensure that the local community’s best interests were served. He insisted that local labour be used and that local contractors be utilized to do the work. “Ninety percent of the work done there was done by local people,” he said.

Sithi emphasized that he believed the project delivered value for money. Apart from the soccer field that was established, a netball court and ablution facilities were erected. The centre was fenced off and a borehole was sunk. The borehole was equipped, and the four tanks hold a combined 20 000 litres of water. The soccer field also boasts a freshly planted grass surface.

“We need to change our behaviour and keep it clean”

The litter includes everything from baby diapers to used toilet paper and plastic bags. Mageza said that a desperate need existed to change people’s behaviour, especially that of children, and have

them take responsibility for the environment.

The 59-year-old environmental activist expressed these sentiments at an Environmental Health Campaign workshop, hosted by Vumbanani For Peacebuilding (VFP) at Waterval Community hall two weeks ago.

According to Tendai Chandigere from VFP, the campaign is aimed at addressing the environmental health challenges in Elim and the surrounding areas. “We discov-

ered that there is a lot of rubbish dumping in Elim and it seems the municipality is not doing much to address that, hence we thought it is good for the community to stand together with VFP to address the issue,” said Chandigere. They focused on the Elim area as their first port of call, since the VFP offices are located in Elim. The VFP is planning to do similar campaigns in different areas in the Vhembe District, said Chandigere.

Endectocides are drugs already used to treat parasites such as ticks and worms in livestock and which, Makhanthisa says, have been found to be effective against the survival and egg production of malaria mosquitoes.

“Treating cattle and other livestock with these drugs in malaria-endemic regions might help reduce malaria-vector mosquitoes and could potentially be implemented as a control strategy.”

She explained that field studies investigating these drugs are limited, and much research is required before the strategy can be implemented. “To the best of my knowledge, this was the first study in South Africa to investigate the use of cattle-administered endectocides. Such studies have been conducted only in a few other countries.”

Makhanthisa is pleased to have completed her master’s and is grateful for the doors it has opened. “We are getting the first manuscript ready for publication, and I am excited about it,” she says, smiling. She has registered for a PhD in medical entomology after being awarded another international scholarship by EcoHealth Alliance, an environmental non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting wildlife and public health from disease.

A disabled young learner from the Unarine Day Care Centre in Tsianda near Tshakhuma received a new wheelchair two weeks ago. The wheelchair was donated by members of the Public Servants Association (PSA) in Limpopo. Tshilidzi Mabila (23) of Thohoyandou Block G was born with only one leg. She needed a better wheelchair to allow her more freedom with her movements. Faranani’s donkey replaced with a bicycle

Faranani Mabuli shows off his new bike.

For the 15-year-old Faranani Mabuli, his trusted donkey was his only “ride” to school and back. When the donkey died a few weeks ago, he was stuck and had to walk to school, some five kilometres away from his home at Tshiavha Muremelani.

The story and photo of Faranani on his donkey went viral early in October. National newspapers carried the sad story of the death of his donkey and it quickly spread on social media. Many people were touched by the plight of the young man needing to find his way on foot to Tshiheni Primary School.

A good Samaritan arrived in the form of Mr Mathakha Mashau, a veteran of the 1976 youth uprising.

His heart went out to the boy and he decided to donate a bicycle, a

new full school uniform and a bag of maize meal to the family.

“On the 6th of October, I read an article about a Grade 6 learner who rides a donkey to school, and the report also stated that his donkey died and he now has to walk for many kilometres to school,” he said.

Mashau was also concerned about the continued education of the young man.

“I want this boy to go to school and be educated, so that he can be someone in his community,” he said, “ I don’t want him to miss out on education because he doesn’t have a school uniform or can’t walk to school because of the distance.”

Ms Selinah Nemandivhe, who is the boy’s aunt and guardian, was delighted when hearing that someone was willing to assist Faranani.

“Now that he has a bike, he will no longer be late for school,” she said.

She explained that Faranani had lost his parents and he did not have any siblings or relatives besides her and her children. “I am the only family that he has, and my worry is when I leave earth, he will be left all alone,” she said.

“Truth be told, he is not doing well at school. He is 15 years old

and still in primary school while his peers are in high school. I wish there was someone who can take him to school where he can learn a trade, so that he can easily get a job,” she added.

Bishop Petrus Marubini (94) laid to rest

By Kaizer Nengovhela A respected leader of the Mufhandani United Apostolic Church, Bishop Petrus Marubini (94), was buried at Gogobole on Sunday.

Bishop Marubini died at his home last Wednesday after a long illness. During the funeral service, church and community members did not shed tears, as the family had requested that it be a celebration of a life well lived.

According to one of the community members, Mr George Maphala, Bishop Marubini will always be remembered for his good work by his church members and the community in which he served for so many years.

Mr Ishmael Marubini, a

son of the bishop, described his death as a big loss to the family. “He was one of a kind; a unique person who was always ready to help every member of his family and whoever came to him for help. We have lost a great father,” he added.

A church representative, Ms Emely Sadiki, said that the family, the community and the church were in great pain after losing one of their beloved leaders. She said that the whole community gathered with heavy hearts and would remember the

bishop as he had been very influential in the area.

Sadiki said that Bishop Marubini had done many things for his community.

He built the new church, he helped poor people and he assisted many communities and learners at different schools.

“We want the children of Marubini and pastors who served under him to continue helping the church to grow, as we don’t want the church to cease to operate because the founder is no more,” she said.

An attorney running his own law firm, Rembuluwani said that he discovered his talent at an early stage of his life through his big brother’s choir.

“My brother, Christopher Mathogo, who sings Tshivenda traditional mu-

kind of positive music that might make a positive impact on a country like SA.” When he started taking music seriously, he was inspired and motivated by Christopher, who urged him to not only record but to strive to produce quality music. “I create music that adds value to the lives of people,” he said.

He is further inspired by Lufuno Dagada, who is an excellent musician in his own right.

“Recording my first single track, entitled Mu-

vhofhololi, provided me with a great feeling of both peace and achievement, especially considering the response that the song received from the people,” he said.

Rembuluwani is busy putting the final touches on his Muvhofhololi album, due for release in December. It comprises songs such as Muvhofhololi ndi Yeso, Gundo, Dembe levha ita, Hanga tendi, Yeso osedza, Uyari tsireledza, Lufuno na mbavhalelo, and Speak a word.

Young Muneiwa (18) publishes his first book

By Kaizer Nengovhela A Grade 10 learner, Muneiwa Tshikororo (18), recently published his first Tshivenda novel, Ndayo dza Vhatendi.

Tshikororo, who was born at Tshidimbini, said that his love of writing started in 2017. “I used to write short stories and my friends were impressed with my ability. I then took it seriously until the birth of my first novel, Ndayo dza Vhatendi. I decided to write a novel because I have a lot of experience that I would like to share with the community, and I felt that I would not be able to express myself fully in a short story.”

Tshikororo has seen many people failing in life because they try so hard to please others and forget to work more on achieving their dreams. “The desire to please other people while neglecting your dreams is like a chronic disease that kills passion,” he said.

He explained that he was

by no means using ancient language, but just pure Tshivenda. He believes that writers are the best equipped to keep a language alive by reviving it in their work. “I had noticed that our language is fading and getting swallowed by the frequent use of English in our day-to-day life,” he said.

“I decided to revive Tshivenda,” he said. He also encouraged other youths to utilize their talents to the benefit of their communities.

“It is important to use our skills while we are still young, because that could be the foundation of our future.

Mine is an inborn talent, but my success is coupled with hard work, determination, and a positive attitude. I also want to prove the fact that success does not depend on whether one comes from a disadvantaged rural area like me, but it depends on one’s ability to use the available limited resources.”

I feel I must do something to lure them away from such behaviour,” said Fortunate Malindi, a passionate young musician.

The 16-year-old Malindi hails from Hamavhunga village in Nzhelele. She is a Grade 10 learner at Tshamakwapini Secondary School and the thirdborn child in a family of five.

“Day in and day out I have realised that youths in my area have nothing to occupy themselves constructively.

I would like to inspire and stop such trends through music,” said Malindi.

She fell in love with rhumba music while she was still in Grade 3. Her mother used to play Slizer and Bibo rhumba tracks.

“At a very young age I used to watch the videos produced

by Slizer and Bibo, and I realised that a lot youths were involved in the music industry, so this inspired me,” she said. She loves composing and realised she has a knack for, among others, hip-hop music.

Her first album appeared in 2016 and so far, she has produced five albums. She hopes to release the sixth album early next year.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror, Malindi said she was pleading with radio stations to play her music as she believes it may bring about a change in the behaviour of young people.

Fortunate Malindi would like to make a change to the behaviour of young people in her area through music.

These are the words of the once-famous Tshivenda kwaito, hip-hop, and rap superstar, Thivhulawi Emmanuel Ndou, better known as T Man Gavini.

Much to the jubilation of his fans, the reformed Gavini is back in the studio, finalising his single entitled Mazwale, which will be released before the end of this year. “I will never walk the same path again because I nearly destroyed my music career. I am very thankful to everyone who was concerned about my talent for coming through to encourage me to bounce back. I am now back, and nothing will stand in my way to reclaim my top spot in the music industry,” said Gavini.

Gavini shot to stardom in 2007 when he released his kwaito hit, Tshifhinga tsha u tshina.

He also remixed Dr Irene Mawela’s famous song Tshisiwana in which he featured her (Dr Irene Mawela). In 2009, he released the hit

song Hoyu nwana ndi a mu funa, featuring Killer Gee and Mizo Phyll.

He left his fans amazed when he unexpectedly disappeared from the limelight for many years. That was when he also gave up on his business-management studies at Vhembe TVET College. In preparation for his full comeback, he released an album entitled Ri khou funana last year, which was nominated for a Tshivenda Music Award (Tshima).

He passed his sincere gratitude to Mpho Nefuri of Nefuri Attorneys for taking him through the process of rehab. “I’m completely new and fully recovered from drug and alcohol abuse because of this Good Samaritan. I pray that God gives her a long life, so that she can also assist other drug addicts to reform and live a normal life.”

He apologised to his fans for letting them down during the time when he was out of the limelight.

"Experience is the best teacher. I am now here to stay, and I urge my fans to fully support me. I am here to stay because this is where I belong. Nothing will take away my talent because I was born to entertain people. My special gratitude goes to everyone who contributed to my dramatic comeback.”

He is Phalaphala FM’s sports commentator, he is a voice-over artist, a translator, a researcher, a facilitator, an adjudicator, a coordinator of events, an author, a motivational speaker, a master of ceremonies and an educator.

Mashige started his education at Livhuwani Lower Primary School, from where he went to Vandani Higher Primary School and eventually matriculated from Lamula Jubilee Secondary School. He went to Soweto College of Education, where he successfully completed his Senior Teacher’s Diploma.

He obtained his BA degree from UNISA, a B.Ed. degree from VISTA, an M.Ed. degree from RAU and an Educational Management qualification from UJ. In the 80s, Mashige used to sell fruit and other items at stadiums, a situation that developed his interest in and knowledge of football. In the late 80s and early 90s, he worked on a part-time basis for the Gate Control department responsible for the safety of spectators and teams of the National Soccer League (NSL), under the leadership of Mr David Thidiela.

His vast understanding of the world football was harnessed and sharpened by Mr Hyson Musandiwa, and he supplemented this knowledge by listening to well-renowned sports commentators across the world.

Mashige commentated on a number of matches of the domestic competitions under the auspices of the Premier Soccer League. He also covered tournaments such as the Iwisa Maize Meal Spectacular, the Nelson Mandela Challenge, the Vodacom Challenge and major continental and world tournaments such as the CAF Champions League, the CAF Confederation Cup, the Bundesliga, the AFCON finals, FIFA-Confederations Cup and the FIFA World Cup. He commentated on a number of derbies between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in different domestic competitions as well as several exhibition matches, including the Barcelona tour in South Africa. He is sometimes called to be part of the panel responsible for the determination of the soccer player and coach of the month.

He went to Ivory Coast to commentate on the CAF Champion’s League final, which saw Orlando Pirates as the first South African Football Club to clinch the CAF Champions League.

In 1996, he commentated on the Africa Cup of Nations final, which saw Bafana Bafana beat Tunisia. He also commentated on matches played by Banyana Banyana.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup, held in South Africa, was his most memorable tournament, which produced his inextricable voice linked to Siphiwe Tshabalala’s opening goal against Mexico.

Local farmer Nemasisi receives his first award

Project to fix Musina’s roads starts Musina News Local motorists have welcomed the rehabilitation and upgrading of 18 internal streets in Musina town. The R14 million project has been financed by De Beers Venetia Mine, which is working closely with Musina Local Municipality.

The project started last week and is expected to be concluded at the end of March next year.

The project’s scope entails rehabilitating the existing earthworks, carrying out surface repairs, the application of an asphalt overlay and the construction of storm-water control structures.

Johnson Ngwenya is a taxi driver who transports school children and workers around Musina town daily. The news

of the street rehabilitation sounded like sweet music to his ears. He said: “We have been complaining several times about the bad state of some of the streets we use on a daily basis, but we are happy that our pleas did not fall on deaf ears. This is good news to us as car owners because the improved roads will extend the life of our vehicles. It will also facilitate the smooth running of vehicles while at the same time reducing the number of road accidents.”

The manager responsible for traffic at Musina Municipality, Mr Ailwei Mutele, urged road users to be patient throughout the project period. He said the project would result in short-term inconvenience to motorists, residents and the businesses operating along the internal streets of Musina town.

“The municipality is mindful of the traffic inconvenience and therefore kindly appeals to all community members affected by this project to be patient, remain courteous and obey traffic signals during this period of traffic disruption. We will attempt to keep disruptions to a minimum, increase traffic management and provide for alternative routes while construction is underway. Vehicles will be directed with signage to maintain road safety throughout the construction period.”

Mutele said the internal streets affected by the project included Kerk, Dreyer, Murphy, Rutherford, Cass, Harold Grenfell, Paul Mills, Scholtz, Copper, Mostert, Willie Fourie, Murray, Frost, Watson, Visser, Casper, Turner and a slipway from the N1 to the municipality.

“I never imagined my life as a farmer, and farming was never my passion,” he said.

“But the passion for farming developed when I moved to Louis Trichardt after my parents had bought a farm. I had no knowledge of farming then.”

However, he had learned all the expertise needed for farming and he is today regarded as a mentor to a horde of young and emerging farmers in the country.

“I experimented with farming with a variety of produce,” he said. “When I had

a challenge, I would always inquire from other people, most particularly the shops where I bought my farming needs.”

Nemasisi’s target markets are feeding schemes, vegetable vendors, and small businesses.

He has been delivering orders to Tshakhuma, Phiphidi, Makonde, Vuwani, Elim, Thohoyandou, Mokopane and Tzaneen. He has employed six people and he hopes to create more jobs soon.

A dedicated farmer from Louis Trichardt, Pfananani Augustine Nemasisi, also known as Pan, was awarded a trophy and certificate at the Limpopo Regional Productivity Awards at Bolivia Lodge in Polokwane.

Nemasisi won first prize in the co-operative sector category.

“This was my first ever award, and to me it is the beginning of greater things yet to come,” he said shortly after the ceremony. “I was left in awe for the recognition of my hard work, passion and love for farming. This award serves to motivate me even more.”

Nemasisi runs a farming operation outside Louis Trichardt, where he plants a variety of vegetables such as cabbages, green peppers, spinach, and tomatoes. He then sells to hawkers and some chain stores in the Vhembe District.

Five suspects arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery at a filling station near the Capricorn Toll Plaza two weeks ago appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court again last week. The case was postponed to 4 November.

The five suspects, aged between 33 and 38, were arrested near Tshilwavhusiku soon after the robbery. During the arrest, police recovered one vehicle, five firearms and ammunition, as well as undisclosed amount of money.

All five are to remain in police custody. Police investigations are continuing, and more arrests may follow.

Covid-19 curve has stabilised in Vhembe, but too early to relax

By Anton van Zyl The Vhembe region may have escaped the brunt of the Covid-19 onslaught, but residents are warned not to relax and to be very wary of the threat. The graphs indicate that the highest number of active cases in Vhembe was recorded on 8 August, when 370 people were carriers of the virus. This number has gone down to 62 and has fluctuated between 45 and 85 for October.

On 1 November, a total number of 2 167 patients in Vhembe tested positive for the coronavirus. The virus had already claimed 64 victims by then.

The two regions competing for the most cases are Thulamela and Makhado. Thulamela recorded more infections up to mid-October, but Makhado then passed its tally.

On 1 November, Makhado’s total of infected people stood at 825, with Thulamela not far behind on 812. The Collins Chabane district came in third at 308 cases, with Musina

fourth with 222 cases.

As far as fatalities are concerned, Thulamela recorded 29 deaths, against the 26 in Makhado. At Collins Chabane, seven deaths were recorded and at Musina only two people died after being infected.

Whether the pattern will continue is debatable. Worldwide, countries such as the United Kingdom went into a second “hard” lockdown the past week. In the United States, a record number of 100 000 new cases were reported in a single day, and on Tuesday the country was heading towards 9,4 million infections.

Predicting how deadly the infections are, is difficult.

South Africa, and especially the Vhembe area, has a relatively low mortality rate. Of the 2 167 people who tested positive for the virus, only 64 died, representing a mortality rate of less than 3%. In countries such as Italy, the picture is a lot different. This country has recorded more than 730 000 cases, with 39 000 deaths. This means that Italy’s Covid-19 mortality rate

is almost twice that of South Africa (which stood at around 2,7%).

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries not to let their guard down in order to curb the further spread of Covid-19. In a media briefing two weeks ago, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom called for “compromises and sacrifices” in the fight against the pandemic.

The question as to when a vaccine will be available is almost impossible to answer.

An unprecedented urgency exists worldwide to develop and test possible vaccines. Most experts think a vaccine will not be widely available until the middle of 2021.

In South Africa, pharmaceutical giant Aspen Pharmacare announced last week that it had entered into a preliminary agreement with Johnson & Johnson to manufacture its Covid-19 vaccine candidate at its facility in Port Elizabeth.

Aspen says this facility has the capacity to produce more than 300 million doses per annum.
