On Sunday, 1 August, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Vhembe stood at 755. The third wave peaked on 14 July when the region had 2 171 active cases. When August started, the Thulamela District recorded slightly more cases (279) than the Makhado district (266). Musina had 143 cases and the Collins Chabane District recorded 67 cases. The rising numbers of Covid-19 patients had a direct impact on the local hospitals. At the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, things were extremely hectic at times. During a visit of the

MEC for Health, Phophi Ramathuba, earlier this week, she said that the hospital had to be converted to deal exclusively with Covid patients. The situation became so dire that it ran out of beds to accommodate the increasing number of critically ill patients, who arrived in groups. According to the MEC, some patients were self-referred from other nearby hospitals. Even its casualty wards were filled to the brim, trying to fit everyone in. A number of patients were even attended to in a tent, erected in an open area outside on the hospital grounds.

Ramathuba said that the situation had thankfully improved and the general wards at the Memorial Hospital had been re-opened for general patients. At the end of June, the official number of Covid-related deaths in Vhembe stood at 497. On 1 August, this tally had gone up to 709. Most of the deaths were recorded in Makhado (345), with Thulamela some way behind on 239. In Musina, 30 deaths were recorded and in Collins Chabane 95.

Hy vertel dat hy hom ongeveer 30 jaar gelede leer ken het, toe hy as vakleerling by Loutrec gewerk het. “Dit was opmerklik dat hy vanuit die staanspoor eerlik met my was oor sy geloofsake. Deur die jare het ons dikwels gesprekke oor kerk en geloof gehad. Nog ‘n bekende inwoner van Louis Trichardt het hierdie week sy stryd teen Covid-19 verloor. Francois Johannes Botha is op 3 Augustus in die Tzaneen MediKliniek weens die virus oorlede. Hy was 59 jaar oud gewees. Francois was ‘n welbekende inwoner van die omgewing. Hy is op 28 November 1961 in Pretoria gebore. Die gesin het na Louis Trichardt verhuis, waar hy sy laer- en hoërskoolloopbaan voltooi het. “Na skool het hy sy twee jaar diensplig gedoen. Hy het by die munisipaliteit begin werk en was vir 21 jaar in hulle diens. Daarna het Francois sy eie vervoerbesigheid begin, totdat

hy in 2014 afgetree het,” sê sy hartseer vrou, Lynette. Sy voeg by dat Francois sedert sy aftrede op die plaas geboer het. Lynette onthou dat Francois baie lief was daarvoor om sy Bybelkennis uit te brei. “Hy het ook die mooiste houtwerk-items gemaak. Daar was altyd net een van ‘n item, want dan was dit, volgens hom, uniek. Francois het gelewe vir sy kinders en kleinkinders,” sê Lynette. Francois (van sy baie goeie vriende het hom soms Cois genoem) was baie lief vir rugby en het ook vir die dorp se eerstespan gespeel. “Hy was ‘n haker, en wanneer stutte seergekry het, dan skuif hy na die stutposisie,” onthou Lynette.

Lynette het elke liewe persoon bedank wat gehelp het in hul tyd van nood, met spesiale vermelding van ds. Innes Nagel, dr. Gaigher, asook drs. Steele en Middleton by die Tzaneen MediKliniek wat uitstekend was. “Ons het ‘n wonderlike seun, pa, broer, oupa en vriend verloor,” sê Lynette. Francois word oorleef deur sy vrou Lynette, seuns Paul, Jaydee en Franco, ses kleinkinders, asook Francois se ma, Das, suster Mari Jooste en broer Marius Botha. “Hy is nou by Jesus tot ons hom weer sien,” sê die be droefde familie. Wyle Francois se begrafnis vind plaas op Woensdag, 11 Augustus, om 11:00 te Plot 13, Vondeling.

Herstelwerk aan Baobabstraat by die aansluiting met die N1 in Louis Trichardt het sedert Dinsdag grootskaalse verkeersontwrigting veroorsaak. Te midde van die ontwrigting slaak menige motoris egter ‘n sug van verligting dat dié besige kruising, een van slegs twee uit die woongebied, uiteindelik herstel word. Swaar verkeer en die goeie reën vroeër vanjaar het veroorsaak dat groot dele van die straat totaal verbrokkel het. Munisipale woordvoerder mnr. Louis Bobodi het Dinsdag by navraag gesê dat die herstelwerk slegs tydelik is. Die Makhado Munisipaliteit het in hulle 2021/22 begroting ‘n bedrag van R3 miljoen bewillig vir die herontwerp en herbou van die straat. Tenders in dié verband is reeds geadverteer.

Drie gevalle van hondsdolheid in streek bevestig Deur Andries van Zyl Inwoners word gewaarsku dat hondsdolheid weer in die streek voorkom, nadat drie positiewe gevalle van die siekte verlede Vrydag, 30 Julie, by die Louis Trichardt Dierebeskermingsverening (DBV) se Legacy-dierekliniek bevestig is. Al drie gevalle was honde. Twee was rondloperhonde - een van die Piesanghoek-omgewing en die ander een van die Vuwani-omgewing. Die derde hond het behoort aan ‘n troeteldiereienaar van Louis Trichardt. “Een geval van hondsdolheid is een te veel,” het die plaaslike DBV se inspekteur Lawrence Khodobo gesê. Alhoewel hondsdolheid maar altyd ‘n gevaar sal inhou vir mens en dier, het Khodobo gesê dat die siekte vanjaar vir hom ietwat meer voorkom. “Ek blameer die Covid-19 pandemie. Normale inentingsveldtogte, soos dié van die Staat, het nie plaasgevind soos voorheen nie. As ons kon uitgaan om inentings te doen, sou ons nie hierdie probleem gehad het nie,” het Khodobo gesê. Die Louis Trichardt DBV kon self nie uitkom by al hul gereelde inentingsveldtogte in buitegebiede nie weens die pandemie en gepaardgaande inperkings. Die span is egter gretig om weer aan die gang te kom. Nuus van die voorkoms van hondsdolheid in die Soutpansberg-omgewing kom op dieselfde dag as die Nasionale Instituut vir Oordraagbare Siektes (NIOS) se aankondiging d at twee

Die hondsdolheidvirus word van diere (in meeste gevalle honde) na mense oorgedra in die dier se speeksel wanneer die dier iemand byt. Die virus kan ook deur snye, die mond of oë die mens infekteer. Die eerste simptome van infeksie sluit in hoofpyn, angs, koors, braking en uiterse vrees vir water. Daarna volg verlamming, koma en die dood. Dit neem gewoonlik twee tot 10 weke vir mense en diere om simptome te toon ná infeksie. Wanneer mens of dier die tekens begin toon, is geen behandeling moontlik nie en die persoon of dier sal sterf. Om dadelik ná ‘n byt van ‘n vermoedelik hondsdol dier met behande ling te begin, voordat die simptome begin wys, is dus uiters belangrik. Was die wonde onmiddellik deeglik, verkieslik met ’n ontsmettingsmiddel. Kry so gou moontlik mediese behandeling en onthou dat die behandeling uit ’n reeks inspui tings bestaan en ‘n persoon die volledige reeks moet ontvang. “Mense wat vermoed dat hulle gebyt is of in kontak was met ‘n dol hond [of kat] moet so gou moontlik ‘n hondsdolheid inenting gaan kry as ‘n voorsorgmaatreël,” het Khodobo gesê.

Die Zoutpansberger het hierdie week gepoog om by die plaaslike Departement van Landbou en Landelike Ontwikkeling, wat verantwoordelik is vir inentingsveldtogte teen hondsdolheid, uit te vind wanneer hulle beplan om weer ‘n veldtog te loods. Die koerant se navrae is egter verwys na die departement se streekkantoor in Sibasa. Herhaalde pogings om die skakelbeampte daar in die hande te kry was onsuksesvol. Een beampte, wat nie op rekord wou gaan nie, het egter genoem dat hulle nou eers fokus op hulle bek-en-klouseer program.

Die departement se skynbare trae reaksie ten opsigte van die uitbreking van hondsdolheid laat talle troeteldiereienaars nou met die vraag wat hulle te doen staan om seker te maak die siekte versprei nie. Vir hulle is daar hoop. Sedert verlede jaar se uitbreking van die siekte in die Soutpansberg het die plaaslike DBV voortgegaan met hulle spesiale aanbieding van R20 per inenting per dier teen hondsdolheid by hul Legacy-kliniek op hul perseel op die Vondeling-pad. Four die after driver allegedly ﬂee from police Road safety The Limpopo Department of Transport has confirmed that four people had died in a head-on collision between a minibus-taxi and a bus on the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina on the morning of 30 July. The accident occurred around 05:00 near the Sasol garage en route to Musina. The driver of the minibus-taxi had allegedly refused to comply with a request by the police to

stop and had sped off. A highspeed chase ensued, with the taxi driver losing control of his vehicle and colliding head-on with the bus. “The taxi driver is among the four people who were certified dead on the scene. Two people were critically injured, two others escaped with serious injuries while six were treated for minor injuries. “The road was closed for over three hours while emergency personnel cleared the scene. The bus was heading to the

border,” said the department in a press release. Following the accident, Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya sent messages of condolences to the families that lost their loved ones in the horrific accident. She also cautioned about the escalating number of fatal accidents recorded in Limpopo in the past weeks. The beautiful Soutpansberg mountain range was selected this year to form part of the Mountain Marathon Series with a 42km, 21km and 10km scheduled to take place on 15 August this year. The Mountain Marathon Series is held in association with the Endangered Wildlife Trust and Trail Shed Adventure Gear. “There is no doubt it will be

a challenge in terms of climbing and at times technicality. It will include rocks, rivers, sand, forest, grasslands, wetlands, waterfalls and more. It’s a very wild space up there, with a surprise around each corner,” remarked the organisers about the Soutpansberg trail. The 42km will see athletes gain an elevation of 1 997 metres, with five water points along the way. Athletes will climb a total of 1

108 metres over the 21km race, while the 10km race will see athletes climb 689 metres with two water points along the way. Athletes must note that the event has a 100-runner limit and online entries close at midday on Friday, 30 July. VINTAGE CAR OUTING TO LEVUBU The region’s “petrol-

heads”, especially those who love tinkering with vintage cars or motorcycles, are invited to an outing on Sunday,

22 August. The group of vintage-car and -motorcycle enthusiasts plan on driving from Louis Trichardt to Levubu, where they will have a brunch at Hippo Park Lodge. They will leave between 10:00 and 11:00 from town. The event is very informal and open to all vintage-vehicle enthusiasts. This is, however, a very broad concept, as cars dating from the 1970s and even 1980s are nowadays considered “old”. The idea is, however, to get owners of these older vehicles to get them out of storage and out onto the road. It is 05:00. Wake up. Win R500 with your own photo-novel The response from readers about our photo-novel competition has been quite overwhelming. The readers seem to love the format and the light-hearted manner in which stories are presented. Few of the readers, however, are brave enough to take on our team and produce their own photo-novel. We’re not yet giving up on our readers, but we are not going to make it easy. Readers are welcome to try and “beat the team”. We will still offer a weekly R500 cash prize for reader-entries, but our in-house team will

prepare an entry for every week’s edition. That means your entry will be up against the “team”. The overall prize for the best entry is still R1 000. Don’t be scared of entering. This is a fun project and the judges are extremely biased in favour of reader contributions. All you need to enter is an interesting story that must be told within the limitations of 12 photos. You would probably need some actors and a few props, but family members are normally quite willing to help. (Promise them they

will become superstars.) You can use a cellphone to take the photos or an expensive camera, it doesn’t matter. The photos will be used in black-and-white, so take that in consideration (get a decent contrast). Send your twelve photos, along with the twelve “bullets” (descriptions) to leigh@zoutnet. co.za. Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital re-opened for general patients By Kaizer Nengovhela The Limpopo MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, re-opened the general wards for all patients at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital during her visit to the hospital on 27 July. The coronavirus’s deadly third wave caused a spike in the number of Covid-19 patients in need of critical care in the Makhado municipal area and the Department of Health made the decision to transfer all other medical and surgical cases (non-Covid-related) from the 36-bed general wards to nearby health facilities, such as Elim and Siloam Hospital. This was done not only to make room for the growing number of new Covid patients, but also to protect the other patients from contracting the virus. The hospital was thus converted to deal with Covid-19 patients exclusively. The situation at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital was so dire that it ran out of beds to accommodate the increasing number of critical patients, who arrived in groups. According to the MEC, some patients were self-referred from other nearby hospitals. Even its casualty wards were filled to the brim, trying to fit everyone in. A number of patients were even attended to in a tent, erected in an open area outside on the hospital grounds. In the most recent press release, Ramathuba announced that the general wards at the Memorial Hospital had

Vodacom launches its 5G technology in Thohoyandou Communication Cell phone giant Vodacom announced last week that it had switched on the 5G mobile network in Thohoyandou and Polokwane. Further rollouts of this new technology are planned for more areas in the province. Vodacom’s 5G network supports both mobile and fixed wireless-access services. The technology promises much higher download and upload speeds, lower latency (the time it takes for a connected service to respond to a command) and far greater capacity, speed, and coverage.

Ms Portia Mbokazi, Vodacom’s marketing specialist in Limpopo, explained that 5G offers many advantages. The system is around 10 times faster than 4G and is designed to work at average speeds of 150-200Mbps, and peak speeds can reach above 1Gbps. “This means people will be able to download a full 4K film in around 3 minutes (compared to over 15 minutes on 4G),” says Mbokazi. With the new technology in place, devices such as phones or computers should connect much more quickly and respond much faster to inputs or instructions. “Reducing this time lag is crucial in making, say, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications faster to respond,” Mbokazi explains. One of the major advantages of 5G technology is that it can handle a huge capacity. “This just means that it can handle lots of people and services accessing the network at the same time, even in densely populated areas,” says Mbokazi. Imran Khan, managing executive for Vodacom Limpopo Region, says that Vodacom Limpopo remains committed to the digital transformation of the province. “We want the communities of Limpopo to have access to the same technologies as all South Africans and therefore access to the same opportunities. This will support economic and social transformation,” he says. Khan reckons the new technology will assist government as well as their corporate customers. “This is going to transform public service delivery and … help take the country forward. It will also allow our corporate customers to launch their bespoke solutions that are dependent on the high speeds and low latency that 5G networks offer,” he says. Mbokazi says that 5G-enabled devices are expected to become more accessible to South Africans in the future. “Already we are seeing the introduction of increasingly cost-effective 5G-enabled smartphones around the world, not just in the premium segment but also in the mid-tier segment,” she says.

For this reason, Benita Kaldine established Mara Victim Empowerment (MVE) last year. Not only to educate residents, especially in the Buysdorp and Indermark areas, on their rights and responsibilities regarding SGBV, but also to ensure that the police and the justice system are held accountable for SGBV-related issues. “I believe it is a worthy

cause that will do a great deal of good for the communities we serve. People who are vulnerable to violence are denying themselves counselling that can help them to heal and, at the same time, they also allow perpetrators to carry on brutalising people with impunity,” she said. “There is a need for this kind of organisation in South Africa.” Before the MVE was established, Kaldine worked at a victim-empowerment centre in Johannesburg for three years, where she supervised and oversaw a feeding scheme that provided for 350 vulnerable children. She also supervised the care givers in the afternoons and provided

counselling for affected families during home visits. She transferred to Louis Trichardt in 2019 to join the Songozwi Victim Empowerment organisation as programme director, but the organisation closed early in 2020 because of internal disagreements between the management and board members. LET’S COOK... Baked Stuffed Jalapeños By Denise van Bergen There are numerous delicious recipes for this famous hors d’oeuvre, but this week I’m sharing one of my own. Other than most of our readers who have shared their wonderful recipes with us thus far, I sadly count among the few who don’t know all that much about cooking (with the exception of one or two recipes, of course). As an inexperienced cook, complicated in the kitchen just don’t work for me, so I always look for the easiest recipe and try not to mess it up. This one is a combination of at least five different recipes. I picked only the ingredients and flavours that suit my taste best and threw them into one recipe while keeping it very simple, and - if I may say so myself – my experiment turned out to be quite a success. Note: The number of chilies used depends on the potency of the peppers. The hotter the jalapeño, the fewer chilies you will use - unless really hot is what you want. Ingredients for the filling: • 1 x 230g tub Sweet Thai Chili cream cheese • 2-3 fresh green/red chilies, chopped (optional) • 1 tsp crushed garlic • pinch of salt • ¼ tsp ground black pepper • ¼ tsp paprika • dash or two of fresh lemon juice • 1 + 2 cups Cheddar cheese, grated (2 cups for topping)

Preheat oven to 220°C. Prepare the jalapeños for stuffing: Note: When working with jalapeños, it helps to wear disposable gloves. If you don’t have gloves, coat your hands with some cooking oil to protect your skin before working with the peppers. Once you have finished, wash your hands thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Do not touch your eyes for several hours after handling the peppers. 12 medium/large jalapeño peppers ½ pack Sweet Chili Doritos, crushed Either slice the jalapeños in half, lengthwise, or slice off the top one-third (lengthwise) of each jalapeño to make a boat shape out of each pepper. The halved jalapeños will go further (twice as many stuffed peppers), but you can put more filling into the boat-shaped peppers. Your choice. In either case, scrape out all the seeds and ribs from each jalapeño with a spoon (a grapefruit spoon works great). Mix: Mix all the filling ingredients together with 1 cup of cheese. Stuff the jalapeños: Pack the filling into the peppers and place them onto a baking tray. Sprinkle the crushed chips over the stuffed peppers and top with the remaining 2 cups of cheese. Bake for 20 minutes, and enjoy! Best served warm.
