Cable workers complain about working conditions Pedestrian killed in accident Workers at Grand Select in Shayandima have downed tools and are up in arms against their employer.

The workers have vowed not to return to work until their problems, which include termination of contracts, low pay and unsafe working conditions, among others, have been addressed.

The workers who do the maintenance of Telkom underground cables, overhead cables, aerials and replacement of poles say some have been working for the company for more than 10 years but get very little as salaries. "Things are not going well here. We have been complaining for many years and we also went to the local labour office, but it seems they will never

act and things have not improved at all.

We need decent salaries with increments every year as prices are going up every year. We are also worried that we work long hours and no overtime is paid for that," says Mr Godfrey Ratshilivha on behalf of the workers.

He says they also have problems as they do not have safety equipment, like helmets and boots, and some of them are injured at work and they are not compensated.

"Many of us have worked for many years here, but we do not have any benefits whatsoever.

We are forced to sign for something that we do not even know. Our payslips indicate that we get more, whereas a very

small salary is deposited in our accounts,” he adds.

Mr Marius Groenewald, director at Grand Select, says the workers do not belong to him: "I do not control those workers as they are employed by Lebogang Electrical. Mine at Grand Select don’t have problems here," he said.

Shortly after Dube had been knocked down, his older brother, Steady Dube (20), arrived at the scene. He noticed what had happened and wailed heartbrokenly.

He explained that he, Fidelis and another brother, James (24), had just enjoyed food at one of the food stalls at Eltivillas.

“We meant to go to Tshakhuma together, but Fidelis walked off first,” explained Steady.

“We stay at Mamvuka and

Tshakhuma, because the kind of work we do demands that we move around a lot.”

James arrived after about 30 minutes and the police informed him about the accident that involved his sibling. He wept bitterly and spoke in Shona. “God has done his will, my brother is no more; he's gone,” he kept saying and praying as he moved around.

The closest police officer took a visibly traumatised James by the arm and led him to a safe spot under a tree leaning on the fence of the rugby grounds.

The police's provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, confirmed the incident and said that the driver of the Toyota Corolla had been arrested. “The police have opened a case of culpable homicide and the case was sent to the director of public prosecution for a decision,” Col Otto said. “The suspect was given a warning [to appear in court].”

Police officer in court after shooting incident The Tshitale police arrested a 50-year-old police lieutenant who had allegedly shot a 24-year-old man in Vleifontein last month.

Lt Philip Musina, attached to the Makhado SAPS, allegedly shot Brian Ralikhuvhan. The spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, confirmed the incident. He said that the police had opened a case of attempted murder.

Musina appeared in the Tshitale Magistrate's Court and his case was postponed to 14 February next year for further investigations.

According to Mulaudzi, the policeman confronted a suspect and gave him a verbal warning. The man allegedly did not respond, after which the policeman fired a warning shot. It was at this stage, says Mulaudzi, that the policeman fired a further shot, hitting the man. The injured young man was taken to the Elim hospital for treatment.

Mulaudzi confirmed that a case of attempted murder had been opened against the policeman.

The victim, Brian Ralikhuvhana, said that he was surprised when a policeman started shooting at him without saying a word. He said that he was coming back from the shop where he was sent to buy a cigarette for his friend. “I was running out of the shop. The police were searching people who were outside the shop.

Family refuses to bury man without all body parts The family of the 94-year-old man who was found in the mountainous bushes, hidden under the leaves and logs with a missing head, leg and hand, are refusing to bury their loved one until his missing parts have been found.

The Ramuisi family told the police that they did not want to bury the body of Mr Tshamano Johannes Ramuisi without the missing body parts. Ramuisi went missing on 18 September.

High Court calls petty headman Mamburu to order “Avaathu, please come home” A petty headman, Mr Titus Mbulaheni Mamburu, who has been selling land to people without consultation with his subordinates was solemnly ordered to stop acting as a petty headman and was excused from all activities of the Matsa Royal Council.

The discovery of the body, with some parts alleged to be missing, has sent shockwaves through the community, with some people strongly believing that he was murdered somewhere else and then hanged at the cliff next to a local river.

Ramaliba’s uncle, Mr Alson Masikhwa, said he was called to the scene at around 15:00 on Friday. “I rushed there and what I saw there has traumatised me so much that it will take a long time for me to forget the scene. Two Beit Bridge cattle rustlers who are brothers from Umguza village pleaded with the magistrate not to send them to jail for stealing their neighbour’s bull, saying they were driven by poverty to commit the offence.

The plea, however, fell on deaf ears as the magistrate, Mrs Gladmore Mushove, convicted the pair on their own plea of guilty to stock theft. She sentenced Honest Dube (18) and his brother Phathisani (20) to an effective nine years in jail each for conniving

to set a trap for their neighbour’s bull grazing in the field.

In mitigation, Phathisani pleaded to be spared “the agony of prison life. We teamed up and ensnared the complainant’s cow, so that I could put food on the table after selling the meat.”

The court was told that on the night of 8 November, Honest and Phathisani ganged up and set snares at Plot 3 in Umguza, resulting in their trapping Mr Landi Moyo’s bull, which they slaughtered and skinned.

The two men took the carcass to a neighbouring village, during which time they tried to contact their buyer, the court heard.

Their buyer, however, failed to pitch up, resulting in the meat’s going bad.

They consumed some of the meat before dumping the remainder in a Blair toilet.

Acting on a tip-off, the police descended on the two men’s homestead, leading to the discovery of the rotten meat, and the Dube brothers were arrested.

The head of the company, Mr Brian Shimkovitz, confirmed the deal. “A few years ago, my friend gave me a copy of his CD Shaka Bundu and I was blown away by the music. I listened to it a lot and have played it often during the Awesome Tapes from Africa DJ sets that I do around the US, Canada, Australia and Europe. I also posted it on my blog and received an overwhelmingly positive reaction.”

On top of that, Penny, who is also a ward councillor for the ANC in the Greater Giyani Municipality, is happy after the municipality advertised a tender to tar a road leading to his ward after he was suspended by the ANC in the Mopani region over the failure to have the road tarred.The disciplinary committee acquitted him on a technicality after it appeared that there had been no complaint from his ward.

Now he is a happy man.

“I did not become a councillor for money, but I am a servant of the people. Now I have achieved my milestone service delivery in the form of electricity for my people, a tarred road and an access road to the Nkuri tribal authority has also been approved,” he said Greater Giyani municipality spokesperson Steven Mabunda confirmed that the tender for the tar road to Nkuri has been advertised.

ICASA’s education officer, Mr Mavhungu Makatu, was present during the AGM. The election was co-ordinated by officials from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Mpfariseni Mulaudzi (Vhembe regional manager) and Ms Rabelani Muthavhini (electoral official).

“The election went very well,” said Mulaudzi.

“But there were two spoilt votes – these two persons put more than one mark on one and the same ballot paper. We explained clearly that they must mark once, but they didn’t listen.”

Mbedzi pointed out that when the current station management took over from the previous management, the station had 12 000 listeners per day.

“Today we have 105 000 listeners per day,” said Mbedzi. “This puts us as at number two of the most listened community radio stations in Limpopo, after Sekhukhune FM.”

In jail for arson A Beit Bridge villager who ran amok and set ablaze his ex-girlfriend’s property worth R30 000 after she had dumped him, was sentenced to an effective one year in jail.

Clement Hove (27), could not stomach that his ex-girlfriend, Ms Ntombiyokusa Moyo (26), had fallen in love with another man. The court was told that Hove, of Mberengwa village outside Beit Bridge, was incensed by the fact he had spent a lot of money on her.

Magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe on Friday convicted Hove of malicious damage to property and sentenced him to two years in jail. Twelve months were suspended on condition that Hove paid Moyo compensation of R30 000 through the clerk of the court by 31 January 2014.

Hove told the court that he had lost a lot of money while pampering his girlfriend. He testified that he and Moyo had been in a relationship for nine months “and I spent lots of money on her to buy whatever she wanted. I set her property ablaze when she told me she now has someone else in her life. This really pained me because I have been financially taking care of her every need,” he said.

Hove said he regretted his mistake.

The court was told that on 26 November Hove went to his ex-girlfriend’s home and set alight Moyo’s property. The fire spread and damaged the roof of the hut and the property went up in smoke.

Moyo’s blankets, bed, various clothing items and some cash were also destroyed in the process.

Pupils to prepare for peer pressure As Grade 7s are preparing to start high school next year, excitement as well as fear may be emotions that they experience, due to the uncertainties of the new environment awaiting them.

Preparing children for high school is the aim of a project by a social work student from the University of the Witwatersrand, Mr Fathuwani Ligege, born in the Kurhuleni Mission village near Ha-Masia.

Ligege visited Masia Primary School on 15 November and engaged with the Grade 7s during a well-prepared programme, covering issues of peer pressure, teenage pregnancy, suicide, alcohol and drugs, and goal setting.

Ligege quotes Mr Peter Jordan of Fedhealth that the average age of drug dependency in South Africa is 12 years and dropping.

Concerning teenage pregnancies, the Mail and Guardian reported in April this year that “according to official estimates, 90 000 schoolgirls were pregnant last year”.

Ligege engaged with the Grade 7s of Masia for about five hours.

First of all, the learners came up with norms which would guide them for the day, such as no cell phones, confidentiality and respect.

They discussed their expectations and fears of high school in small groups. The pupils did role play of meeting bad friends in high school, followed by a

discussion of peer pressure and how to deal with negative peer pressure. “Peer pressure as a broader topic then led to the other topics of suicide, teenage pregnancy, drinking alcohol and taking drugs,” Ligege said.

Their final session was about setting goals. Pupils were encouraged to specify their long-term goals and their short-term goals which would help them get to their life goals.

“Lastly, the pupils had to take an oath where they left their handprints in different colours on white cloth,” Ligege said.

The taking of the oath signify that learners are willing to better their lives and say no to life destructors.

The Grade 7s of Masia Primary School learnt through discussion, role play and other means how to handle peer pressure at high school and the ensuing issues of teenage pregnancy, suicide, alcohol and drugs. Senior prosecuter now the new bishop A well-known legal representative of Musina, Adv (Pastor) Edward Pesulo, will be ordained as the first bishop of the Jesus for the Poor in Spirit International Ministries (JPS) during the annual JPS Convention next week.

The legal eagle is the founder of the fast-growing Musina ministry, which also has eight branches in Malawi and the Venda region.

The convention will start on Monday (9th), culminating in the ordination of Pesulo on Saturday (14th). Pesulo is not a novice in the world of ministering. He started the ministry in 1992 when he was a student at the University of Venda. In 1997, the ministry was formalised and JPS was born in June 2008. Asked about the meaning of the name of the church, Pesulo indicated that the name revealed

that 99% of people in the world are poor in spirit.

“This means that people are going to church, but they are not sufficient in the issues of God. They are praying daily, but not sufficient in the issues of God. God is for these people, people who are poor in spirit. We invite all the people to be part of this historic event which will help in growing their faith in the house of God. They will also receive blessings and anointing.”

Pesulo was born and bred in Musina and holds a B Proc and LLB Degree and a Diploma in Theology. He has been admitted as an advocate in the High Court and is currently a senior prosecutor in the Magistrate’s Court in Musina. “Ours is a prophetic ministry and it is better to stay in a prophetic ministry, because nothing will go wrong with your future, you will be told what your future holds for you. Why do people go to sangomas ? This is because they want to be told what the future holds for them, but in our prophetic ministry, the future is revealed to you in the name of Jesus.”

Pesulo urges people to bring the sick, so that they can receive healing. “Those who are discouraged and have given up hope and faith must come and receive a new lease on life in the mighty name of Jesus.”

The official opening of the convention will be led

by Cllr Carol Phiri, the mayor of Musina. She will lead a grand march from the Nancefield municipal offices to the JSP Church, where she will deliver the keynote address.

CCMA orders Univen to reinstate Nemadzivhanani Former Univen registrar Mr Khuliso Nemadzivhanani, who was suspended and subsequently dismissed by the university in 2011, had the last laugh when the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) sitting in Polokwane recently cleared him of all charges.

The CCMA ordered that he be reinstated to his previous position and that the university reimburse him to the tune of more than a million rand.

He was initially found guilty of

misconduct in that he had assisted in giving a cleaning-service provider a tender without following tender procedures. The university has been ordered to reinstate Nemadzivhanani to his position before December 2013.

Nemadzivhanani’s dismissal from his position as registrar received widespread coverage in the media in 2011. He then appealed against his dismissal to the Univen council’s appeals committee in 2012. The matter was finalised in August 2012.

The appeals committee was divided

on the matter. The appeals committee chairperson, a legally trained member of parliament, wrote a minority report, stating that Nemadzivhanani was not guilty of any charges except one sub-charge and recommended a final written warning. The other two members insisted on finding Nemadzivhanani guilty but did not provide any reasons. They recommended dismissal. The Univen council accepted the report of the two members.

Nemadzivhanani then approached the CCMA for relief. The matter was heard over eight days.

After listening to the evidence on both sides, the commission found that the university had failed to prove that the dismissal of Nemadzivhanani was for a fair reason in terms of the relevant act. The commission concluded that the university’s case against Nemadzivhanani was very thin, and that he should not have been dismissed as none of the charges was proved.

The CCMA found that the evidence showed that Nemadzivhanani did not do anything without the knowledge and consent of the then acting vice-chancellor, Dr James Leatt. Leatt had confirmed at the hearing that what Nemadzivhanani did and was charged and dismissed for was done on his authority and instruction as the Univen CEO. The dismissal was found to be substantively unfair.

Nemadzivhanani said he was relieved that the CCMA had vindicated him. “I have always maintained my innocence, but I allowed all the legal processes to unfold. I feel very relieved now.

The CCMA confirmed what the general public always knew. No serious person really believed the trumped-up charges. My family always knew that this was the inevitable outcome. The whole experience was instructive to the extent that it opened a window into the nature of the character of humanity in the quest for survival. It was really bad.

I am emotionally exhausted but more strengthened in my resolve,” he said.

The quest for morality

Do not allow children to separate you The joy of having children in Africa is unspeakable; hence the Vhavenda-speaking people of Limpopo have an old adage that says: “matakadza mbiluni ndi nwana” (that which brings joy to one’s heart is a child).

If you are married and cannot bear children, it feels like you are cursed because of societal pressure that comes with it. People think it is automatic that, once you are married, you should also give birth and forget that as much as God gives children to married and unmarried people, it is also his prerogative not to give others children. The Bible says children are a heritage from the hand of God. If you are blessed with children in your marriage, you should cherish every moment with them and you should do your utmost to fend for and take good care of them. You should provide and educate them to become better citizens who are able to transform society through whatever God has placed in their hands - their gifting.

There is one key issue that I want to address with this article – the fact that children can also be a factor in the high rate of divorce. As much as we cherish them as gifts from God, they have unfortunately contributed in some marriages to divorce. I have

seen, for instance, how women can easily get detached from their husbands as soon as they start giving birth.

There are families where the level of communication between the two (husband and wife) has reached zero in the absence of children around them.

Do not lose the spark of communication because of the presence of children. Do not lose the spark of love for one another because of children either. Love and cherish your children together, but at the same time, enjoy each other’s company. As we celebrated our 18th anniversary on 2 December, my wife reminded us of the most important principle that we adopted in raising our children: “You are our guests, and we love and cherish you. We will do everything possible to make you as comfortable as possible until such time that you will leave our space, but know that you are not allowed to come between us”.

That is why we sometimes, intentionally, go out for one or two days where we spend time together without our children.

Provincial department endorses EPWP

The Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport is committed to ensuring that the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) runs smoothly and without confusion in the province.

Speaking to the executive committee of the municipality last Wednesday, Mr Matome Moremi (Limpopo parliamentary officer), said contractors should follow the mandate of the EPWP. “Contractors shall be responsible for reporting on the progress done on site. Each

contractor is mandated to employ at least 600 households belonging to the poorest community,” said Mr Moremi.

He said EPWP employees would work for three days a week and earn the amount budgeted, taking into consideration their roles. “Out of the 600, about 30 beneficiaries will be employed as team leaders and will be earning R90 a day whilst others are earning R70 a day,” he said.

He said the plan of the EPWP was to ensure that communities were benefiting from government

projects in their area. Moremi warned contractors to follow the projects’ procedures carefully.

He said it was the contractors’ responsibility to ensure that working conditions at the sites were safe. Various provincial roads in the Makhado municipality will be refurbished over a period of 12 months.

EPWP workers will be patching potholes, repairing surfaces, cleaning drains, cutting grass and clearing bushes along the provincial tarred roads in the Makhado region.

Soldiers arrested after death of villager A Zimbabwean man employed as a security guard was allegedly stabbed with a knife by four men, which also included three soldiers, following a dispute over R5.

The victim was identified as Bhekinkosi Ndlovu (28), who died after a fight about a snooker game, where the betting stake was R5. The incident, which occurred on Sunday at around 23:00 at Ngoma village outside Beit Bridge, has left local villagers shocked.

The blood-stained Okapi knife that was allegedly used to stab Ndlovu was later recovered at his homestead.

It was told to Limpopo Mirror that the three soldiers and the

son of a local councillor were arrested by the police over the incident. When we visited the area, villagers were huddled in small groups, consoling each other and discussing Ndlovu’s death.

Mr Dick Mthakathi, Ndlovu’s brother-in law, who witnessed the fight that led to his death, said he was still shocked that Ndlovu had died just because of a snooker game.

It was reported that after the interrogation of the suspect, the police found the knife possibly used in the fight. The suspects later led the police to the scene of

the crime and, on arriving at the place where Ndlovu was allegedly stabbed, his wife broke down and sobbed uncontrollably. One of the suspects, who was in leg irons, seemed unmoved as he leisurely smoked a cigarette.

Police spokesperson Assist Insp Siphiwe Makonese confirmed the incident. “The suspects will appear in court soon on murder charges and we are continuing with our investigations,” she said.

The rural community of Muila in Thothololo outside Matoks received a surprise visit from the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, and Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi last Tuesday.

They were accompanied by several councillors, municipal managers and government officials from different departments.

International DJ at House Music Festival SAPS reflect on success stories of 2013 DJ Kuniyuki Takahashi will perform for the first time on South African soil during the 15th annual GumbaFire 2013 House Music Festival in Thohoyandou, Venda.

The event will be held at the renowned mecca of deep house, the Mutswiriri Cultural Centre in Ha-Dumasi, 9 km east of Thohoyandou on Saturday, 21 December.

According to the organisers, for the past 14 years, GumbaFire SA “has entertained, thrilled and hypnotised house music enthusiasts, not only in Limpopo, but also in the rest of the country.” This year promises to be even bigger and better as the music extravaganza

celebrates its 15th anniversary.

With a line up worthy of international standards, the event looks set to cement South Africa and Limpopo as the mecca of dance music, and deep-house music in particular, said the organisers.

The event will provide more than 15 hours of deep-house music in all its forms. More than fifteen DJs and live acts will entertain an estimated minimum of 10 000 deep-house music aficionados.

Takahashi is expected to take music lovers through a musical odyssey as he performs for the very first time in South African.

blend of future jazz, techno and deep-house music styles through his various musical instruments.

He will also be joined on stage by world-renowned US-based remixer, producer, and DJ, Lars Behrenroth, originally from Germany. Also performing will be South Africa’s acclaimed house music DJs and producers DJ Christos and DJ Vinny da Vinci. The talented house-music producer DJ Darque, DJs Sfiso Wishingsoul, Miggs, Malankane, Funk Deepstar, Trev the Japanese, Uni DGeoff, Enosoul, and Tronix will also hold live shows during the festival.

GumbaFire SA’s spokesperson, Oscar Tshifure, says that he believed the festival was well on track towards fulfilling its objectives. It will also promote tourism with direct and indirect economic spinoffs for the Vhembe District, he added.

GumbaFire SA will also host a pre-party with the chart-topping band Liquid Deep performing at Peermont Khoroni Hotel on Friday, 20 December, as a headline act.

Three of Limpopo Province’s young and most talented lyricists, Mizo Phyll, P Postman and Tswyza, will complete the hip-hop and ragga instalments of the show. Supporting them with a dose of house music will be a complement of DJs .

Tshilwavhusiku SAPS officials from different units reflected on the success stories in their policing area during their endyear function.

The event, which was recently held at the police station's multi-purpose hall, served to stabilise team work among colleagues in the SAPS and proved that the police officers are doing their best in ensuring the safety of the community.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Musiwalo Mahuwa, pointed out that it was very important for the

police to always remind members of the community to work hand in glove with the police in the war against the scourge of crime.

“Some people still think that providing the police with information on a crime is ratting on the perpetrators,” he said. “We need to annihilate this kind of negative mentality within our communities.”

He mentioned several cases which the police tackled successfully because community members came forward with helpful information. W/O Tendani Sidimela informed his col-

leagues of a murder case which was recently finalised in the Thohoyandou High Court, and the officers agreed that all murder cases should be investigated and information gathered tactfully and thoroughly to ensure that justice is done.

“We understand that God didn't give us powers to bring back to life victims who were murdered, but cases must be tackled in such a way that the family of the victim and the community can see that we as the police are doing our job satisfactorily,” said Sidimela during the event.

Ha-Mavhunga community salutes nurse Recently, several nurses at public health facilities in the Vhembe region have been accused of negligence and a dreadful attitude towards patients.

These events have caused many patients to lose trust in the public health system. Those who have enough money have turned to private health facilities, while those who don't continue to endure the attitude of nurses in their local clinics. Last month, a 19-month-old baby, Mulalo Prince Mulaudzi, died after nurses allegedly refused to help him immediately in Ha-Khakhu.

The child’s grandmother complained that nurses allegedly ignored her with the child, when she needed immediate attention.

The incident sparked a huge public outcry in the area, with people complaining about nurses’ misconduct.

In the village of Ha-Mavhunga in Nzhelele, community members honoured a nurse, Mrs Emily Malivha, for her dedication and commitment to help people. The

incidents of nurses’ misconduct and attitude towards patients has been a taboo in their local clinic.

Community members gathered last Sunday morning at their village to honour Mrs Malivha, who had worked at their local clinic (Mavhunga Clinic) for almost 17 years. She was described as a humble person who was always willing to help people, irrespective of who they were.

The chairperson of Sanco in the village, Mr Robert Mutshinya, said since she started working at their local clinic in 1996, most people had complimented her.

He said she was always tolerant with patients and she was a real Florence Nightingale.

“She is approachable, and no-one has been complaining about her. All people who used to consult her often complimented her,” he said. He said many village committees who worked with Malivha described her as a community builder who always encouraged people to take care of their health.

council, Mr Murendeni Ralioma, said they seldom had elders complaining about nurses in their clinic. He said she maintained their community to be healthy while she was still working at their clinic.

“We often hear elders complaining about nurses, but with our clinic it is not the case. It was through her leadership that patients received better service,” he said.

Mrs Malivha, who has been transferred to Fondwe clinic, urged Mavhunga residents to look after their health. She thanked the entire community for honouring her.

“They say one must hold what you have, and I grasped tightly, and here is the reward for my commitment. It is always good to be honoured whilst you are still alive,” she said. She said people should always test for diabetes, HIV and any other diseases, so that they can start taking treatment. “Continue going to the clinic, even though I am no longer working there,” she said.

A 16-year-old girl from Makhado Park, Maureen Mamafha, is the toast of the town after she emerged as winner of the local music contest, The Ultimate Sing-off Louis Trichardt.

The event was held at St Mark’s Church, a fortnight ago. She is a Grade 10 pupil at Hoërskool Louis Trichardt and received a certificate, a stylish travel bag and beauty hamper. “I think what The Ultimate Sing-off contest is going is to boost our confidence as the youth,” said Maureen. “And I hope the community will recognise us and vouch to sponsor our activities, because the youth are the ones who can make lasting changes in our society in the long run.”

Ceejay Yekani (17) was named runner-up, while Roselyn Ravhura (16) was the second runner-up.

Fun walk encourages a healthy lifestyle As another way of encouraging the community to live a healthy lifestyle, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture organized a Fun Walk in Thohoyandou last Saturday.

The walk from the Vhembe District Municipality’s offices to Hollywood Garage via the Thohoyandou stadium and back involved more than 700 people.

Eight years for would-be poacher As the festive season commences, rhino activists celebrated a small victory with law enforcement officials in the Limpopo Province.

On Monday, the 19-year-old Musa Simango pleaded guilty to charges relating to rhino poaching and was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Louis Trichardt Regional Court.

Simango was caught red-handed in the Punda Maria area of the Kruger National Park (KNP) on Monday, 28 October. He and two other suspects were spotted by rangers and pursued by helicopters.

Simango was eventually caught and arrested. His partners in crime managed to elude arrest.

The police and rangers, however, did not back down, and kept on searching for the two escapees.

While chasing the remaining two suspects down, there was a gunfight between the suspects and the rangers.

One suspect, Derrick Maluleke (34), was fatally wounded, while the remaining suspect slipped through the rangers’ fingers. According to the police’s provincial spokesperson, Col Ronel Otto, the police found three live bullets in Simango’s pockets. After the shooting incident, the police also confiscated a firearm.

Simango pleaded guilty to single counts of illegal activities in a protected area (hunt of a rhino), the illegal possession of ammunition and trespassing.

He was, respectively, sentenced to eight years imprisonment on the first charge, three years for the second charge and one year for the charge of trespassing. Simango’s last two sentences will be served concurrently with his conviction on the first charge, meaning that he effectively received a direct sentence of eight years’ imprisonment.

Following the court’s verdict, provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Fannie Masemola applauded the magistrate, as well as Lt Willie Taute of the Musina Stock Theft Unit, for opposing bail and securing the conviction. “The more hefty sentences the court gives to rhino poachers, the better for our vulnerable rhinos,” Masemola said.

Dynamos FC suffer third consecutive defeat Things are going from bad to worse in the Dynamos camp. They suffered their third defeat in succession last weekend. Their Safa Second Division League match against Bellevue Village Winners at the Malamulele Stadium ended in a 2-0 victory for Bellevue.

Dynamos lost 0-2 to Joe’s Express at the same venue in their opening league match. Their second fixture was against Phungo All Stars, to whom they lost 0-4.

Giyani Hotspurs shared the glory with Winners Park at the Giyani Stadium.

Hotspurs could have easily sealed the

game in the first half, but their strikers were unlucky. The final score was 2-2.

Great North FC, who started the season with a bang, are in mourning. They suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of their neighbours, Magezi FC, at Polokwane.

Great North took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, but they failed to convert their early chances. The only thing they managed to do was to score first. Their only goal came in the 24th minute. That was an insult to Magezi, who responded by scoring three goals in the second half. The Dolphins maintained

their reputation by beating Ray Pillars 2-1 at the Seshego Stadium. The Dolphins are still to lose a league match this season.

Basel FC were brutally walloped 0-7 by Joe’s Express at the Makwarela Stadium.

Joe’s Express are shining on top of the log, following the historic victory.

Phungo All Stars could not absorb the pressure from Blue Rocks, who narrowly beat them 1-0 at the Eltivillas ground on Saturday. Lephalale Young Killers registered their first victory last weekend. They beat Modimolle Aces 1-0 at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale.

Basel to face Phungo All Stars Basel FC are gearing up for a tough Safa Second Division League match this weekend. They will host Phungo All Stars at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Both Basel FC and Phungo All Stars were defeated in last weekend's league matches. Phungo All Stars lost 0-1 to Blue Rocks at the Eltivillas grounds, while Basel are still battling to come to terms with their 0-7 loss at the hands of Joe’s Express at the Makwarela Stadium.

Apart from the fact that Basel are still to win a league match this season, they had not scored a single goal to date.

They have conceded 11 goals in three league matches. Some of Basel's secret weapons include Isaac Chauke and Ezekiel Nobela.

Dynamos are also set to register their first victory for the season. They will meet Lephalale Young Killers at the Nwamitwa grounds. Just like Basel and Phungo All Stars, Dynamos have not known the taste of victory this season.

Sparks are expected to fly when

the Mopani teams, Bellevue Winners Park and Blue Rocks, rub shoulders at the Nkowankowa Stadium tomorrow.

It remains to be seen whether Joe’s Express will continue from where they left off last weekend when they meet Ray Pillars at the Seshego Stadium tomorrow.

The Polokwane derby between Magezi FC and The Dolphins FC will be staged at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium. Magezi are blowing hot and cold this season.

Giyani Hotspurs will travel all the way to Mokopane. They will lock horns with Mosesetjane All Stars at the Mahwelereng Stadium. The coach of Mosesetjane All Stars is still battling to find a winning combination as his side lost all three matches they have played to date.

Rospa United will host Mighty FC at the Malamulele Stadium. Rospa are still to lose a league match this season.

The only match that will be played on Sunday will be between Winners Park and Great North FC. It will be played at the Mahwelereng Stadium in Mokopane.

Comment: The fault must be put squarely on the shoulders of the Department of Health in Limpopo.

There is a maintenance contract in place for all the equipment and until March there was a company making sure that the contractors performed. It used to send inspectors to make sure everything was fine. Then the department relieved Sakhiwo of its duties as an inspectorate. Now the department cannot monitor the contractors. Besides, the contractors are not being paid for work done since Sakhiwo left. At times they are not even given access to the facility to do maintenance.

How in the world does an entity fire an inspector of a contract that is still running? They should take the blame themselves. Engineering items need inspection and regular maintenance. – MM Story: Dry taps, dirty babies and stinking toilets … These are the results of the municipality’s inability to deliver a consistent water supply to Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Comment: Bulk infrastructure is a challenge in our country. Developers, however, must contribute money to improve or maintain these services. A service contribution for new development must be enforced.

Developers keep on developing and get a lot of money, but how much do they pay to the municipality? Wonderful Story: The MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Joyce Mashamba, apologised to the people of Ha-Sinthumule for the government’s failure to deliver satisfactory services in the area.

MEC Ramadwa donates shoes to pupils New journey for SATMA winner Jinika “These are our children, brothers, sisters and future leaders of this country”, MEC for Sport Arts and Culture Mrs Merriam Ramadwa said at the official handing over of schools shoes to three schools around Madombidzha.

The event took place at the Makhado Christian Centre on Tuesday. She presented shoes to disadvantaged learners of three schools around Madombidzha, Tshilwavhusiku, Petamukanda and Madombidzha primary. She said she dreaded seeing children going to school barefoot.

“I know what it is like to go to school without support. I know how painful it is to be teased by

other pupils for not having the necessary uniform,” she added. She also mentioned that some pupils were not dropping out because of laziness but from pressure and self-denial for not having a complete school uniform.

The chairperson of the Sinthumule/Kutama Development Forum, Judge Joseph Raulinga, said the forum started many years ago with the aim of helping disadvantaged pupils whose parents cannot provide sufficiently.

“Our area is one of the poorest areas in the province, and if we do not do something for our learners, some can end up dropping out of school,” he said.

Lidoda Duvha ready for Milano United Black Leopards must win their National First Division League match against Milano United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane tomorrow afternoon. A win for the Thohoyandou outfit will enhance their chances of winning the league title come the end of the season.

Milano United are currently leading the pack with 26 points, while Leopards have 17 points.

The morale is high in the Leopards’ camp after winning their match against United FC 1-0 at the Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg last weekend.

The defence of Milano will not find it easy to neutralise Leopards’ strikers in David Zulu and Meshack Maphangule.

Milano United will pin their hopes on their killer strikers, Amos Skhosana and James Morerwa, for goals.

Thanda Royal Zulu must start collecting league points when they host Roses United at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay or else they will be relegated to the lower division at the end of the season. Huge support for Musangwe at Makuya Many Musangwe lovers travelled long distances to attend a well-organised tournament at Makuya a fortnight ago.

More than 30 fights took place during the tournament. It was attended by a variety of people, including traditional leaders and even women.

Vhembe Netbal Club to represent the province The Vhembe Netball Club will represent Limpopo in the annual championship which will take place in Bloemfontein.

The club's coach, Mpho Lishivha, indicated that the club had qualified to play

in the national level after winning 19-10 against Sekhukhune in the provincial finals at the Polokwane Rugby Stadium some two months ago. “On Thursday [yesterday] we will go to camp in Polokwane for four full days,” said Lishivha. “Then

we will depart for Bloemfontein on Monday. I trust that my youths will make it!”

The Vhembe Netball Club consists of pupils from Magoni Secondary School in Ravele village, Sinthumule. The games will take place between 10 and 15 December.

The annual sports championship is organised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, with different sporting codes ranging from basket ball and soccer to netball and cricket. It starts at the circuit and cluster levels and proceeds to provincial level. .

New sports centre for Skoonplaas Sports lovers within the Musina municipal area are in jovial mood after the local municipality recently handed over the rehabilitation of Nancefield Ext 5 (Skoonplaas) Sports Centre project to the contractor.

Situated in Ward 4 of Musina Municipality, the project will go a long way in bridging the gap of the shortage of sporting facilities in Musina. Unemployed local community members will also be afforded much-needed job opportunities during the rehabilitation period. Valued at R5,1 million, the state-of-the-art sports centre will be rated among the best sporting facilities in the Musina area upon completion.

Wilson Dzebu, says the work at the construction site is progressing well. He says the scope of work includes the erection of the palisade fence, construction of change rooms as well as an additional ticket and guard room.

“In addition, there will also be modern tennis, volleyball and netball courts. The sports centre will also be equipped with a state-of-the-art soccer pitch and ablution facilities.”

According to him, with the growing demand and the importance of healthy lifestyles, the municipality is doing its best to make sure that public sports facilities are available to every interested community member.

“Public sports facilities play a very important role in promoting

physical activity and participation in leisure sports activities.

Therefore, there have been significant efforts to continue to improve the quality of public sports facilities within our municipality. This is very important because sports facilities allow our people to exercise, enjoy playing together and socialize with their peers.”

Dzebu says sports have many benefits for both children and adults. “Sports are a great way to learn essential skills like teamwork and cooperation that will serve children and adults in later life. Easy victory for Rockers In their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday, Rockers FC beat Tswinga Peace Makers 4-1.

As if they were hypnotized, Peace Makers were down and out in the first 20 minutes of the game. They conceded the first goal two minutes into the game. The Rockers’ slender striker, Emmanuel Neswiswi, blasted in a rocket from close range. He capitalized on the Peace Makers’ clearing error.

Rockers nearly increased the margin in the eighth minute, but Mpho Mathivha was unlucky. He received a beautiful pass from Mashudu Siobo
