Girl beaten to death

Residents of the small village of Shaminyami in the Njakanjaka area experienced a huge shock last Wednesday, when a 19-year-old girl was allegedly attacked and beaten to death by her boyfriend.

According to the police, it is alleged that Ntsutsheko Baloyi (19) attacked his girlfriend, Khavisani Mthombeni, over a cell phone. Khavisani was coming from a local church when the alleged attack took place. He apparently took her cell phone after the incident.

W/O Kedibone Mabatha of the police at Waterval said that the police had arrested Baloyi the day after the incident. He confirmed that when Baloyi was arrested, he was found in possession of the victim’s cell phone.

“The incident happened just next to the victim’s home. Neighbours said that they had only heard a scream from the victim, saying she was being attacked,” he said.

Mabatha added that they had opened a murder case, but that their investigations were continuing. Baloyi appeared in the Waterval Regional Court and the case was postponed to Friday, 6 July (today). He

remains in custody.

Khavisani was a Grade 11 pupil at Marholeni High School. The victim’s uncle, Mr Million Mthombeni, said that the family was greatly saddened about their niece’s death. “We are very angry.

She was not supposed to die like that. This is very bad and has traumatized the whole family,” he said.

Mthombeni added that he wanted to see justice take its course. “Somebody must pay here,” he said.

Baloyi is a Grade 12 pupil at Hluvuka High School in the nearby Nkuzana village.

International aloe indaba at Blyde Canyon Sixty scientists, horticulturalists, and dedicated enthusiasts from 12 countries - as far apart as the United States and Australia - recently got together at the Blyde Canyon Forever Resort for the Inhlaba Indaba.

The conference venue was perfectly chosen for them to indulge in their passion for aloes. The Inhlaba Indaba is the first ever dedicated conference on aloes, and had been organised by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the Succulent Society of South Africa (SSSA).

Prof Gideon Smith, director of SANBI, said that the whole of South Africa was a plant paradise, with twice as many species as continental Europe, and the same number of species as the United States, despite being only

a seventh of its size.

The opening lecture by Prof Braam van Wyk of the University of Pretoria focussed on the natural history of aloes. Their distribution in the world shows the typical Gondwanaland pattern – from the days when the continents had not yet drifted apart – and aloes occur in Southern, Eastern, and North-Eastern Africa, as well as in Madagascar and Saudi Arabia. The plants have been known and used for 2 000 years and were first mentioned by Pliny the Elder in the first century AD. Their medicinal and nutritional value is well known, and they are also of great interest to horticulturalists. Aloes are among the few native plants on which proper breeding work has been done.

There are some common features, such as succulent leaves and tubular flowers, but the variation is enormous. There are about 600 taxa (this includes both species and subspecies), and the number increases continuously.

Aloes are used in both traditional and modern medicine. The classical use was as ‘blood cleansing’ – in other words as a laxative/ purgative – in the days when food was poor and caused digestive problems. The bitter taste in the mouth stimulates the flow of gastric juices and improves digestion – this is known as the ‘amarum effect’, similar to the gin and tonic which stimulates your appetite before a meal.

The Good Hope Centre in Sibasa of the Apostolic Faith Mission of Africa, which had a humble beginning in 2004 and today boasts more than 300 members, celebrated its eighth year of excellent service to the community a fortnight ago.

Among the guests were Vho-Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, AFM Zoutpansberg regional chairperson, Dr Mackson Maanzwane, many traditional leaders, pastors from different churches and community members.

The celebration took place in the Bergvlam Primary School Hall in Sibasa.

Pastor Job Mudau, the current resident pastor, said that, through the grace of God, they managed to achieve many great things over the years. “We had very humble beginnings. It started as a prayer session for families in the vicinity, but today we can look back with pride at the strides we have made.

We will soon be moving to our new site, where a big church is to be built,” said Mudau.

Vho-Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli said traditional leadership had always been associated with God and it made him happy to see that today’s church was following in the tradition. ”We as the traditional leaders need the prayers from our subjects.

When people turn to God in their numbers, we have peace in our communities, and we commend the contribution you are making to our communities,” he said.

Dr Mackson Maanzwane urged those gathered to support their leaders. “Leadership is about commitment and how you relate to people. Be ready to work under pressure and be ready to absorb pain,” he said.

Water shortage “soon a thing of the past”

Working on Fire (WoF) is presently carrying out a six-week project to burn a firebreak all along the Kruger National Park’s border with Mozambique.

Firebreaks for KNP This dry season, the Kruger National Park (KNP) should be safe from runaway veld fires, at least from the Mozambican border’s side, as Working on Fire (WoF) carries out a six-week project to establish a firebreak all along this part of the KNP’s border.

“We are burning a 300km-long, 50m-wide firebreak all along Kruger’s eastern boundary,” says WoF’s ground operations manager for the area, Bongani Nhlabathi.

Two WoF teams, from Nelspruit and Waterval Boven, are working on this operation. One team started at the top part of the border with Mozambique, working their way down, while the other started from the bottom up, from Crocodile Bridge, at the same time, on 22 June, according to Bongani.

Each WoF team consists of 25 firefighters, both men and women, who were previously unemployed. WoF is a government-funded, job-creation programme focusing on integrated fire management in South Africa. According to www.workingonfire. org, WoF firefighters are trained in fire awareness and education, prevention and fire suppression skills. These men and women form veld and forest firefighting ground crews and are stationed at bases around the country to help stop the scourge of wildfires. WoF wildland firefighting crews are typically called to assist at potentially catastrophic local wildfires, as well as nationally, when local firefighting resources are stretched to the limit.

For this reason, many of the WoF bases are established in partnership with organisations such as SANParks, CapeNature and district municipalities.

“We have also set aside an additional R384m for operational costs and maintenance,” he added.

According to him, the ageing infrastructure was an obstacle in their commitment to providing quality water to the communities they serve. “Our municipality has also made R40 million available to maintain the old infrastructure,” said Manyuha.

“Currently we have projects that are up and running, connecting water pipes from the Nandoni Dam to the affected areas. By the end of July, a tender will be advertised for the connection of water pipes from Valdezia to the Makhado Water Project.”

He also mentioned that an amount of R26m has been set aside to address the sanitation backlogs in the communities.

Environmental, water and mining affairs criticized by Unesco over Vele Mine The departments of water, environmental and mining affairs have been criticized by United Nations World Heritage Committee (UNESCO) experts for putting coal mining ahead of the protection of the 1 100-year-old Mapungubwe World Heritage Site.

This was revealed in an unfavourable draft report on Mapungubwe and its future world heritage status during UNESCO’s 36th annual sitting in St. Petersburg in Russia last week. Mapungubwe is one of eight South African World Heritage sites that are protected by an international convention because of its “outstanding universal value”.

The report, among other things, warned that the opencast coal mining by Australian mining giant CoaL of Africa Limited (CoAL) poses a “major threat” to the integrity of Mapungubwe and could result in “unacceptable and irreversible damage” to huge strips of land in the vicinity.

According to the report, a UNES-

CO investigation team visited the area during January this year and was shocked at how big the Vele mine was. This team included Mr Lazare Eloundou, chief of the African unit of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, and Mr Dag Avango, a history researcher from the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology. They noted, with concern, that the Department of Minerals and Energy had already authorised more than 20 other mine prospecting leases for coal, petroleum and gas in the Soutpansberg area, and that the government appeared to have ignored previous pleas to put the mining on hold by quietly giving CoAL the go-ahead.

Eloundou and Avango further noted that the world committee had asked the government to put a hold on further mining development until a more thorough heritage impact assessment was compiled. They were, as a result, very surprised to find that the Vele mine was already 95% complete at the time of their visit.

Eloundou and Avango stated that

it was “crystal clear” that CoAL had resumed its operations and stockpiled large volumes of coal. The monitoring team claimed that they had been presented with evidence that the only reason CoAL was using the more damaging opencast mining method was to save money.

In addition to urging CoAL to revert to underground mining, the team also submitted a draft recommendation urging the government to halt any further opencast coal mining in the Soutpansberg-area. The team also requested the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to submit a copy of its integrated management plan and an updated report on the state of conservation at Mapungubwe for review by 1 February next year.

Eloundou and Avango said they were not happy about the fact that the government did not have a proper buffer zone around Mapungubwe and recommended a seven-kilometre buffer zone around Mapungubwe.

In the meantime, the DEA confirmed in a press release last Thursday that they had taken note of the concerns and

Netshianzwane the new headman at Ha-Muraga Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli of Ha Muraga outside Thohoyandou said the inauguration of headman Ramaphege Netshianzwane was a traditional mandate and a contribution to the cultural rebirth of the Muraga people.

at the weekend. He was installed amidst cultural fanfare during a function that was attended by traditional leaders from the surrounding villages under Mphaphuli, leader of the UACC, Bishop MM Miriri, local businesspeople who supported the ceremony and many community members.

The local traditional leader, Chief Ntikedzeni Muraga-Mphaphuli, who officiated, said the position of headman

became vacant after the passing away of Netshianzwane’s father, Tsumbedzo Ramaphege Netshianzwane, in 1985. Since then, there had not been a replacement.

“We are following tradition. Headmen form a very important part in traditional leadership. As chief I cannot see all that is happening in the village. The headmen are our eyes and inform us of everything that happens on the ground. He will be of great use to us and the community,” Chief Ntikedzeni MuragaMphaphuli said.

Vhakoma Vho Nemadandila Mudau told the new headman to work tirelessly for the benefit of his people.

In response, the newly installed Netshianzwane said he would remain a subject to his chief. “Our installation means a lot and is a challenge. Mopani, with Tshwarella ka Thata of Waterberg second and Khutso Tladi of Sekhukhune in third place.

Motlalaohle Secondary of the Capricorn district won the category for best secondary school, with Tshitwa of Vhembe second and Dimpe of Waterberg third. Shongoane Primary of Waterberg won in the category for primary schools, with Leleni from Mopani second and Hlauwelekani of Vhembe third.

The prize money ranged from R10 000 to R150 000, and all the prize winners were adamant that the money received from the department would be used to expand their operations and to take them towards becoming commercial farmers.

Mr Donald Sekwati, chairperson of the Kopano disabled project, said the project was started in 2009 by a group of young people living with disabilities in Sekhukhune. The project operates on 178 ha. They grow vegetables such as cabbage, butternuts, green beans and beetroot and supply these to big companies.

Two Makhado residents to participate in international indigenous games abroad What is regarded as a local sport by the local communities, mufuvha, is now recognised globally.

This was proven after two residents of Makhado Municipality jetted off to Russia to participate in the International Indigenous games. The two, Ms Lutendo Khurumedzha and Walter Ramphaga, were bidden farewell by the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi.

They will compete with people from other international countries

in mufuvha, a local traditional game.

The trip came after the two Makhado residents had outclassed other competitors during a recent national tournament, held in Johannesburg.

Ramphaga could not contain his excitement.

He said he felt proud to participate in the games at an international level.

“This tournament will be promoting indigenous games globally and that’s an honour for me” he said.

Kurumedzha, who shared the sentiments, added that she would represent the country well during the games.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi said the municipality was very proud of the two, because indigenous games played an essential role in preserving culture.

“This will also put our municipality on the map internationally,” he added. Wage hike for taxi and hospitality sectors Employees in the taxi and hospitality industry are smiling from ear to ear, following an announcement of a rise in the minimum wage in their sectors.

The Department of Labour recently announced an improved increment countrywide, effective from 1 July.

The current minimum wage in the hospitality sector for employers with more than 10 employees is R2 323.87 per month, while employers with fewer than 10 employees are paying a minimum wage of R2 084.52.

Morgan Mokwana, assistant director in the department in Limpopo, said this round of increments would see employers with more than 10 employees

hiking their wages to R 2495.80 per month and those with fewer paying R 2240.60 per month.

He said the increments would see taxi drivers raking in wages amounting to R 2449.90 per month, the same amount that will be received by administration workers.

“A giant leap from the pre­ vious year’s R 2160 per month,” said Mokwana.

He said rank marshals will pocket R 231.40 more from their previous R1728.80 per month.

Other employees within the sector, who are not elsewhere specified, will see an increase from the previous R1 512.03 per month to a minimum wage of R1 713.70 per month.

Mokwana said if an employer required an employee to sleep over at a place other than where the employee resided, the employer must either pay the employee the amount of R 279.93 per night or arrange accommodation for the employee.

Mr Albert Tshidavhu, head of the department in the province, said the inspectorate would randomly do spot checks at affected workstations to monitor if the increments were put into practice.

“If employers are found not to be complying with these amendments, they must be ready to face the full might of the law. Compliance is for the benefit of both employers and employees, therefore it is a must. This is why we have competent and capable personnel at labour centres to assist them when they encounter challenges,” said Tshidavhu.

The news has been well received by those in the sectors. Mr Mafunisa Mudau, a taxi driver in the Thohoyandou area, said it was good that the department was also looking after the needs of those in the industry.

16 years for thief The Sibasa Regional Court sentenced housebreaker Phathutshedzo Maduka to 16 years imprisonment last week.

Maduka (20) of Makwarela has been linked to two housebreakings in the Makwarela area. During the trial, the court heard that between April and May 2010, Maduka broke a window and burglar door at Makwarela and stole a DVD player, a hifiset and two speakers.

The stolen items were recovered on 13 May 2010.The second housebreaking took place on 29 April 2010 when Maduka forced a door open at Makwarela and entered the house in the presence of the owner.

The owner screamed and Maduka ran away with a plastic container, eggs and hifi-speakers.

The role of listening to improve your relationship George Eliot once said: “I like not only to be loved, but to be told that I am loved; the realm of silence is large enough beyond the grave”.

One way of telling your partner that you love her or him is to develop the art of listening when he or she speaks.

Here are a few tips that need to be considered to improve your relationship, especially the area of communication, namely: • Realize that each of you has a basic need to be listened to. It is important to note that communication is not one-way traffic where only one of the two must be listened to.

It does not matter how talkative you are, but you must also give space to your spouse to talk as you listen tohim/her.

• Listen intently when your partner is talking to you. Do not just think about answers to give or do it out of politeness without really paying attention to details. Listening is more than politely waiting your turn to speak or answer the other person.

• Listen objectively without being clouded by your past communication with the person. Put down your newspaper, turn off your television, look your partner straight in the eye as a sign that shows that you are really paying attention to what is being said.

• Reach out and care about what is being said. Do not listen out of sympathy but wholeheartedly, with an attitude to want to understand what the other person is saying without judging that person. Listening

is active participation, not passive observance.

• Move past the surface message and get to the heart of what is being said. Listening is more than the hearing of words. You need to ask the most important question: “Am I hearing you correctly?” Try to understand what is being said.

• Discipline yourself to listen.

Listening does not want a person who is not focused or who is not relaxed. It does not come naturally or easily to any of us.

Most of us struggle to listen to the other person, especially when you are tired or strained at work. Most of us are more comfortable when we are in control and speaking and not when we are listening.

Man in regional court for murder A man appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Regional Court in connection with a murder, which occurred on 2 June last year at Madodonga in the Kutama area.

Donald Masidwali appeared in court on 21 June. He is accused of stabbing the 23-year-old Jim Simango of Madodonga. According to the police statement, Simango was stabbed below the left breast with a

knife and bled profusely. He was left lying on his back in the street, while the accused allegedly ran away. The deceased’s brother, Mr John Sithole, had alerted the police and further informed them that the deceased was allegedly killed by Donald Masidwali. The motive of the murder is not known yet, and the case was postponed to 15 August for witnesses to testify.

Disabled musician honoured The disabled Gideon Mamuthamani, aka Killah Gee, who launched a successful music career against all odds, was finally honoured by his community.

Mamuthamani (30) of Tshifulanani Fhasi Ha Bada, whose debut album Amakritza sold many copies and introduced him to the music industry, was recently honoured during a soccer tournament held at the Tshifulanani Stadium. Teams from the surrounding villages took part in the tournament.

Winning teams and individual players went home with prizes ranging from soccer kits to trophies and gold medals.

The coordinator of the tournament, Mr Solomon Nethonzhe, said the extraordinary work that Killah Gee was doing in the development of the arts among the youth in his village could not be underestimated. “’This man is disabled, but did not let his disability become a stumbling block towards self-fulfillment.

He rose to become a well-known musician, despite the odds against him. He also has time for the youth in his village, be it teaching them music, education or other developmental initiatives, he has always been there for them.”

According to Nethonze, the community is indebted to him, and “we felt it would be appropriate to honour him during the month of the youth.

He has inspired many youths and has been a role model to many,” he said.

Mashudu Sathuma to lead the Tshivhilidulu Civic A well-known football referee, Mr Mashudu Sathuma, was re-elected chairperson of the Tshivhilidulu Civic Association during a general meeting held at the local chief’s kraal last Sunday morning.

Mr Elijah Mungoma is the deputy chairperson, while Mr Nkhoyeni Ratshiedana was re-elected into his previous position of general secretary.

Ms Londy Nematoka will assist Ratshiedana. Mrs Margaret Netshivhilidulu will serve her second term as treasurer.

The heads of the various departments were also elected. They are: Messrs Edward Kholopha, Naledzani Mugali, Eric Netshivhilidulu, Jeremiah Dzhanzhi, Rabelani Netshikweta and Thabelo Khakhu and Mesdames Elinah Sivhugwana and Selina Ramasunzi.

In an interview, Chairperson Sathuma mentioned that the heads of the departments would be allocated their respective portfolios during a meeting that will be held in few day’s time. He added that the supply of water in the area is one of the items high on their priority list. He indicated that there are no water taps in the area, saying residents only relied on fountains for water.

He also stated that the municipality only supplied them with a water tanker once a week. He further indicated that although the area has been electrified, some households were still without electricity. That, according to him, is fast becoming a burning issue, since firewood is a scarce

At his funeral, a former general manager for corporate services at the Vhembe District Municipality, Thinandavha Thomas Nyathela, was hailed as a selfless person who had dedicated his life to the development of the community.

The Vhembe District Mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, described Nyathela, better known as TT, as one of the most committed employees of the municipality. He addressed mourners during the funeral service at Nyathela’s home village of Khwekhwe, Ha-Mutsha, on Saturday.

Nyathela passed away on June 21, following a vehicle accident on the Thohoyandou-Makhado road.

Traditional dances at Benny’s The Benny’s Care grounds at Tshiozwi were abuzz during the Soutpansberg cluster final of the arts and culture competition a fortnight ago.

Primary and secondary schools participated in tshigombela, tshikhamba, kiba, nanga, malende and ntshongolo dancing.

Mr Nkhelebeni Mudau, chairperson of the Soutpansberg cluster arts and culture committee, said that for the community to win its battle against negative behaviour, they must respect their elders, including traditional leaders. He added that

participating in sports promoted good moral values. According to him, the Department of Education presented an opportunity for young people of different standings in society to come together. “...and this has educational value. If we lose our tradition, we lose our values,” he said.

He encouraged the youth to show dignity and respect to their grandparents and urged young people and community members to value and appreciate the good work which was done by the elderly.

The district final will be held on the 26 and 27 July at Mutale.

Agric MEC encourages youth to take up farming The MEC for Agriculture, Mr Jacob Marule, has urged newly qualified farmers to go all out to make a meaningful contribution in their communities.

Marule gave a congratulatory message to young farmers who completed a learnership programme at the Madzivhandila College of Agriculture. This was during a certificate ceremony held at the college’s main hall on Thursday.

The 19 learnership recipients successfully completed Level 2 in animal and plant production.

Their certificate ceremony was also attended by many officials from the Department of Agriculture, parents of the farmers

and a representative from the Mphaphuli Royal Council.

Marule said it was embarrassing to find that most of the food that could be produced locally was rare to find and was imported from overseas countries. He said he was also discouraged in one farmers’ meeting where he only found elderly people, which showed that the youth were not actively participating in agriculture.

“We are happy and inspired that we still have youths like you who are now equipped to face the modern world of agriculture. This is not enough. Do not stop here, but continue studying to keep up with modern farming trends,” he said.

He also announced that Madzivhandila College will soon be transformed to include modern technology.

“We are going to make this institution accessible to all, even by people without education. Those who will complete two years here will be accredited by a university. By so doing, we will be doing our bit to develop agriculture in our country,” he said.

College principal Ms Musandiwa Tshisikule said the latest batch trained as farmers who are involved in land reform programmes in their areas.

15 Years in jail for raping daughter-in-law A resident from Dongamuzi village outside Beit Bridge, who had indecently assaulted and raped his daughter-in-law under the mistaken belief that he was fulfilling a custom, has been jailed for 15 years.

The man, aged 47, pleaded guilty to three counts of indecent assault and one count of rape and was convicted by Regional Magistrate Dambudzo Malunga last Thursday.

When asked why he had committed the offence, the man told the court that he was fulfilling a custom, as his father had also slept with his wife.

Asked if the daughter in-law (18) had consented to the act, the man said she had not.

The prosecutor, Mr Bheki Tshabalala, told the court that in February this year, the man’s son left for South Africa to look for employment. He left his wife

in the custody of his parents and, during the month, the man proposed sex to his daughter-in-law, but was turned down. He proceeded and fondled her breasts.

She did not report the incident.

Later on the same day, the daughter-in-law left the homestead to fetch water and her father-in-law followed her. He made advances towards her, but was turned down once again.

The daughter-in-law later made a report to her mother-in-law, who reprimanded her husband.

During March he fondled her breasts again and one day he found her bending down while washing some dishes. He approached her from behind and grabbed her private parts. She ran away and made a report to his wife, who in turn reprimanded him.

On 16 April, the mother-inlaw left her homestead, going

to a neighbour’s homestead to assist with the harvesting of some ground nuts and left the husband, daughter-in-law and five children behind.

During lunch time, the complainant went to serve her fatherin-law his food and, as she knelt down to give him his food, he fondled her breasts, forcing her to run out of his sleeping hut where he was seated. “Among those arrested, five are known serial armed robbers. Twelve of the 28 have since been convicted and sentenced to between five and 10 years in jail,” he added.

“We also rounded up several touts operating at the border post where they swindle unsuspecting travellers of their money by masquerading as border officials and clearing agents,” he said.

Chinhengo mentioned that the operation was aimed at “restoring sanity along the border. We are aware that there are some criminals who commit crimes in either Zimbabwe or South Africa and then flee to either of those countries. Crime knows no international boundary,” he said.

The criminal hot spots include Dulibadzimu Gorge, farms and villages along the borderline and the bushy area near the Limpopo River spillway. Chinhengo said the exercise followed after concerns were raised by local residents and travellers over a surge in criminal activities around the border area.

In May, police from the two countries also conducted a similar exercise during which they nabbed 82 suspects, mostly criminals who were on the wanted list for crimes such as armed robbery, rape and murder.

They recovered machetes, axes, iron bars and knives, which had been used in committing the offences.

According to a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) report, an average of 16 border jumpers are being raped and robbed every month as they cross into the neighbouring country through undesignated entry points illegally. MSF has established sexual and gender-based violence clinics in the border towns of Musina and Beit Bridge.

They mainly target in-transit truck drivers, commercial sex workers and sexually abused irregular migrants seeking STI treatment, trauma counselling, tetanus, HIV and Aids tests and anti-retroviral post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Thahari village’s dark days are over Dark days will soon be over for more than 50 rural households in Thahari village in Ward 8 of Mutale.

The construction phase of an electrification project started during the past week.

The Mutale Local Municipality (MLM)has set aside R1 million for the electrification of Thahari village, said the spokesperson for MLM, Mr Thiathu Ravhura.

“We told our communities in Thahari that our government

was ready to change the lives of rural people for the better,” said Ravhura.

Thahari was left in the dark, while some nearby communities in Shakadza and Tshokotshoko recently received electricity.

The village’s community liaison officer, Mr Owen Nemangaya, was over the moon to learn that electrification of his village has now started. Nemangaya said the electrification project in his village had changed the life of poor, rural, unemployed com-

munity members for the better, as more than ten people were hired to dig the holes for the electricity poles. Without electricity, “life is a nightmare, because we were forced to use candles and paraffin lamps,” added Nemangaya.

The councillor for Ward 8, Mr Gilbert Netshisaulu, was excited that the municipality had remembered his ward in their long-awaited electrification project, which will not only benefit communities, but even schools and churches around the area.

Facelift for Tshishonga Primary School The Tshishonga Primary School, situated in Thohoyandou, had deteriorated to such an extent that even rural schools were better off.

Classes had holes in the floor and paint was peeling from the walls. The roof was leaking and the situation was not conducive to proper learning.

The school has now partly transformed after a local businessman donated funds and refurbished a whole block.

Businessman James Mukwevho of Real Paints and Chemicals in Thohoyandou recently handed over the newly refurbished block to the community.

Mukwevho was accompanied

by his wife, Louisa. In handing over the newly renovated block, Mukwevho said the donation was a thank you to the community of Thohoyandou, who have supported him since he started his business. Mukwevho, who ran away from school because of poverty at home, said he did not want to see children learning under the same conditions he had gone through in those years.

“We did not have uniforms in those days and we studied under trees. We are today creating a conducive environment for you here, so that you do not have any excuse for not achieving your goals,” he said.

After being told that there

were still some challenges at the school, Mukwevho promised to complete the other block during the school holidays.

In response, the principal of the school, Ms Joyce Thivhafuni, said the school was still faced with many challenges in terms of resources.

“This is a no-fee-paying school, but we still lack many things here. What Mr Mukwevho has done for us here is a forecast of good things to come this year. Not long ago, we also received sign boards from Old Mutual, and we are also receiving uniforms for our pupils.

This spells good things for our school,” she said.

She started singing in 1989 as a backing vocalist for groups like Patleo, Senyaka and many others.

She recorded her debut album, Salungano Salungano, in 1991 and Hallalah in 1992.

She then took a long break and concentrated on her career as a journalist and to start a family.

She is the first Venda artist in South Africa to make her music reach international markets.

In 2000, her album Vhafumakadzi Vha Africa was nominated for a SAMA award in the best tradition album category.

She also performed in Chicago during the 15th Freedom Day celebrations.

Mass Computer Training supports charity Mass Computer Training and FET, which has assisted communities on countless occasions, once more endeared itself to the people when it donated money, clothes and medals to a welfare organisation.

The college, which has campuses all over Limpopo, donated R6 000, clothes and medals to Fhatalushaka Home-based Care and Old Age.The organisation looks after the welfare of the elderly in Tshivhambe village and surrounding areas. The organization was preparing to host a fun walk and sports day for the elderly, but did not have anything

to motivate the elderly to participate until the college came to their rescue. The handing over of the cash and the other items took place at the college’s head office in Thohoyandou on Tuesday.

College director Collen Nthangeni said the elderly had a special place in his heart. “We have assisted our community in many different ways, but of late we are focusing on our elderly.”

Nthangeni said the elderly should not be left to feel alone and neglected. “Let us try and keep them busy to keep boredom away from them. This will also serve as an exercise that will help improve

their health,” he added.

Ms Musandiwa Mushavhanamadi, chairperson of the organisation, said they had an idea to stage a sports day for the elderly, but did not have anything to offer them on the day of the event.

“Elderly people eat on time and they must have some drinks ready during the tournament.

We are now going to have some refreshments for our elderly.

“We are very thankful for what Mass Computers has done for us and we are just praying that they continue to prosper in order to continue helping us,” she said.

Awards for Madombidzha Western’s best Several players of Madombidzha Western Stars playing in the Safa Vhembe SAB league received trophies, medals and certificates for their achievements the past season, during a function held at the Makhado show grounds hall on Saturday evening.

According to the managing director of the team, Mr Mashudu Mulaudzi, the main purpose of the function was to motivate the players. He applauded those who received the awards, as the team regards them as role models for other younger people. “You are

the ambassadors of our team,” Mulaudzi said.

“Sports is an important vehicle to cause harmonious interaction between people,” said Mr George Kubayi, president of Safa Vhembe. Kubayi said he was proud of the quality of sports development in the Sinthumule area, and Vhembe as a whole.

He indicated that the youth must involve themselves in participating in different sporting codes.

Sport and education are the keys to the future of our youth, he said. He requested them to stay

away from crime and alcohol and to be aware of the threat of HIV/Aids.

The players who received trophies, medals or certificates for their achievements were: Percy Munonoka (players’ player of the season and top goal scorer); Rudzani Matumba (most disciplined player); Daniel Mukosi (most improved player); Oscar Ramantswana (chairman’s award) and Oscar Mafunisa (goal of the season).

Mbengeni “Tshibili” Tshibvumo was rewarded as the best kit manager.

Lwandani Secondary School at Tshisahulu held their inter-sports fun day last Friday, and everyone, including the staff, participated in the different events. Oscar Stars proceed to the next round

Mr Gordon Igesund (right) has been appointed as the new head coach of the South African Men’s Senior National Team (Bafana Bafana). Makhitha Oscar Stars proceed to the next stage of the Vhembe District Mayoral Cup after beating Zoutpansberg Powerline 7-6 at Tshiozwi on Saturday.

The winners were determined by a penalty shootout after the match ended in a 2-all draw.

Early in the match, Powerline’s killer-striker, Rudzani Nebulu, beat Skaka Makgopo and ran a few steps before shooting straight into the stranded Stars keeper, Itani Selota. As part of their strategy to disorganise their opponents, Stars displayed their dribbling skills in the middle of the park.

Stars’ diminutive striker, Ormish Mudzunga, performed outstandingly throughout the match.

Lenox Ramaru was a difficult man to contain for the Powerline defence. His first touch on the ball ended with an attempt which saw the Powerline keeper stretching to the maximum to fist the ball away. Ramaru scored after he received a square pass from Ntungufhadzeni Masinga.

In the second half, Stars introduced Godwin Mahuwa for Ntungufhadzeni Masinga. Jayson “Mlungu” Maisha equalised in the 67th minute. \He unleashed a volley that left Itani Selota a flabbergasted man. A few minutes later, Powerline went ahead when Aubrey Munyai scored the second goal of his team. Ormish Mudzunga of Stars, however, equalised in the dying minutes.

Nine years in jail for cattle thief (36) A 36-year-old Beit Bridge villager who went to his neighbour’s home at night and stole five cows was sentenced to an effective nine years in jail.

Rembuluwani Mukwevho of Umzingwane village outside Beit Bridge pleaded not guilty to stock theft charges but was convicted by local magistrate Mrs Auxilia Chiumburu.

The prosecutor, Mr Forster Abeki, said that on 5 December last year, Mukwevho went to the complainant’s home during the night and found a herd of cattle penned in a fenced enclosure. He then opened the gate, selected five fat cows from the herd and drove them to his homestead, where he penned them.

On waking up the following

morning, the complainant discovered that some of his cattle were missing.

He then decided to track the cows by following their spoor, leading to their discovery at Mukwevho’s homestead.

A report was made to the police and Mukwevho was arrested.

The stolen cows were subsequent recovered.

Deaf man killed in shebeen at Mashau A deaf man was allegedly beaten to death while drinking locally brewed traditional Mutomboti beer at Ha-Madzhiga village in the Mashau area last Saturday.

According to W/O Solly Mukhola of the Levubu police, it is alleged that Mr Kenny Mohale (31)

was relaxing when a 19-year-old man attacked him and beat him to death. It is suspected that the two had had differences in the past.

Mukhola added that the police had opened a case of murder, following the incident, and that their investigations were continuing.

He added that the police man-

aged to arrest Mukhethwa Tshifhango in connection with the case last Sunday.

Tshifhango appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and the case was postponed.

He remains in custody.

National chairperson for the parliamentary committee on Public Works (MP) Ms Catherine Mabuza visited Makhado two weeks ago, at which time she addressed the workers at the municipality's extended public works programme (EPWP). She commended them for the work being done. Mabuza said that the 24 women who had been employed to clean the town every day were doing a wonderful job. She added that she was excited about the manner in which the municipality was running the programme. The mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, told the committee that his municipality has a budget of about R400 000 that has been put aside for the programme. He added that, for the 2012/13 financial year, the project would be rolled out to R293 towns and also to the rural areas.

Crime

Two men found dead in Makhado Two men were killed in and around Makhado the past weekend.

According to Makhado police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike, a 55-year-old man was killed on a farm along the Vondeling road on Friday, 29 June.

A fight had allegedly broken out between the man, his 22-yearold girlfriend and another man.

It was during this fight that the man was stabbed to death with a sharp object.

Both the girlfriend and the second man were arrested.

The following morning, police were once again called to the bloody scene of yet another killing. The body of an unknown man was found lying next to the road on the corner of Burger and

Vorster Street. He had a stab wound to the chest.

In both cases, the police have opened murder cases for further investigation. In the second case, police have requested residents who might have witnessed the incident or who might have more information to assist them. The detectives can be contacted at Tel 083 206 5594.

“Community had lost trust in Mphephu SAPS” Residents of Nzhelele said they had had enough of the increasing crime taking place in their area.

They showed their dissatisfaction with the situation after the recent ATM bombings in the area when they marched to the Mphephu SAPS offices to hand over a

memorandum with their demands.

The people, who are residing in eight villages in the area, agreed to work hand in hand with the police to root out crime in the area.

They complained that they had noticed no improvement in the area since their

meeting with the management of the SAPS in 2009.

The chairperson of the Nzhelele Civic Association, Mr Bonny Sinthumule, said that the high crime rate, especially housebreaking and theft, was not acceptable and was ravaging the area.

The demonstrators also alleged that criminals had “taken over the village, roamed the streets, terrorizing residents at will. We are at the mercy of these thugs and we need to act in order to stop them in their tracks,” he said.

Sinthumule said that the community had lost trust in the Mphephu SAPS, especially regarding the investigation of the housebreaking cases.

He said that the ATM bombing in March occurred less than 500m from the police station. “We are law-abiding citizens, who strongly feel that the police must protect the community,” said the civic leader.

Amazing victory for United Last Sunday marked the end of the road for Shayandima Silver Stars in the Vhembe Mayoral Challenge Cup competition.

They were brutally walloped 1-7 by Tshakhuma RO United at the Tshifulanani Stadium. Silver Stars were out of touch from the onset. It took United nine minutes to open their account. Ipfi Muthubi caught the keeper of Stars, Phethani Muswodi, napping and blasted in a rocket from the edge of the box.

What followed thereafter was one-way traffic, with the Stars at the receiving end.

United’s second goal came in the 18th minute. Lufuno Mugodi scored with a volley after receiving a neat pass from Elvis Netshidongololwe.

Silver Stars lost hope after United scored their third goal. Lufuno Mugodi completed his brace by hooking in a loose ball, following a scramble within the box.

Silver Stars pulled one back in the 34th minute. Ndivhuwo Mahwasane was on target after forcing his way through the defence of United. Stars’ solitary goal was a wake-up call to United. They scored two more goals before the end of

the first half. Their fourth goal was scored by their overlapping midfielder, Asivhanzhi Muthubi.

Mathisa scored United’s fifth goal three minutes before the break.

He finished off a rebound after Asivhanzhi Muthubi’s long-range ground cutter.

Victor Makhaukhau scored United’s sixth goal 10 minutes into the second half. Ndivhuwo Makhado scored late in the game to bring the final score to 7-1.

Crime

Pastor in custody after hit-and-run A 39-year-old Zimbabwean pastor from Mwenezi outside Beit Bridge was arrested for allegedly speeding, running over and killing a pedestrian who was trying to cross the road.

After knocking down the pedestrian, he allegedly sped from the scene, leaving the man lying in the road in a pool of blood.

Nhamo Chigoni, a pastor of the local Baptist Church, pleaded not guilty to a charge of culpable homicide, when he appeared before Magistrate Gloria Takundwa.

The case was postponed to 20 August and he remains in custody.

The prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, said on 7 May at around 19:20, Chigoni was driving a Gauteng-registered Toyota Hilux bakkie along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road, heading towards Masvingo.

On approaching the 223km peg, he allegedly hit Mutanga Ncube, who was trying to cross the road.

Ncube died instantly.

The court was told that, instead of stopping, Chigoni fled from the scene. He was, however, intercepted by police at a road block and arrested.

Pull Together kick Benny’s out of Cup Mailaskop Pull Together registered a 4-0 victory over Benny’s Care Development Academy in a Vhembe District Mayoral Cup match at the Tshiozwi grounds on Saturday.

Benny's had nobody to blame but themselves for the defeat.

They squandered numerous obvious chances in the first half.

Their leading goal scorer, Phophi Phophi, could not live up to his reputation, as he was contained

by Tshilidzi Muraga.

Benny's were matching their opponents in the first half, but their stamina faded as the going became tough. Melvin Tshifularo was a difficult man to mark. He eluded the Benny's defence as

he kept running from the onset.

Pull Together’s keeper, Walter Chuma, denied the opposition several sure chances.

The visitors scored when Melvin Tshifularo broke the ice in the 49th minute. The goal came against the run of play and Chuma caught Thendo Sidaela off guard.

Melvin Mbatha added another goal seven minutes later. Benny's tried to use offside traps and nearly paid for that as Tshilidzi Muraga and Norman Mudau took advantage of the situation.

Christopher Manyatsha increased the tally to 3-0 and Melvin Tshifularo scored the final goal for Pull Together in the 78th minute. Yona Mulaudzi of Benny's was red carded for a rough attack on Pull Lylod Davhana of Benny´s tries to block the ball from Norman Mudau. Together’s keeper.

Top Elim athlete leads by example For many people, their 50th birthday marks an occasion where they should start relaxing, playing games with the grandchildren and scaling down on activities. This is not the case for Thompson Mbombi, a well-known athlete from Elim. He only started taking part in races such as the Comrades Marathon at the age of 51.

The 54-year-old employee at the Elim Hospital recently finished another gruelling Comrades Marathon in a time of 7:50:29.

Mbombi explained that he had always had a passion for athletics and he had excelled in sports from primary school level. When he grew older, he wanted to show other people through his deeds that they should take care of their health. "If you exercise, you will always stay healthy. This also prevents diseases such as high blood pressure and heart attacks," he said.

In the past decade, he has participated in various races. His achievements include winning the 21.1km half-marathon in Thohoyandou in 2008, completing the 42.2km Soweto Marathon in 2010 and the Two Countries Marathon in Musina last year. He received a warm welcome from his community after taking part in the recently held Comrades Marathon.

Mr Avhatakali Marole, communication officer at Elim Hospital, said that Mbombi had placed the hospital on the map. "We always encourage our staff as well as our patients to exercise," he said.

Mbombi said that he was currently preparing himself for next year's Comrades Marathon.

He expressed his appreciation to members of his family for the support.
