Expect more dry taps as town’s water woes continue By Andries van Zyl Residents of Louis Trichardt and surrounds experienced another week of dry taps as pipe burst after pipe burst continued to plague the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), and Eskom’s announcement on Tuesday to implement Stage-2 load shedding for the rest of the week will surely contribute to the town’s dire water situation. Social media lit up with pictures and videos of the massive mainline waterpipe burst opposite Thompson’s Motors and the N1 in Louis Trichardt last Thursday afternoon. The pipe burst occurred during excavations for the establishment of service infrastructure for a new residential area north of Stubbs Street in Extension 9, a development marred by controversy and secrecy since excavations started about two months ago. Millions of litres of drinking water went to

waste because of the pipe burst, and the area along Stubbs Street resembled a flood zone. Several hours passed, until valves were finally closed to allow officials from the VDM to assess the situation. Initial indications were that contractors would be able to repair the damaged pipeline and restore the water supply to Louis Trichardt within 24 hours. On Friday, 29 April, the VDM issued a statement regarding the burst pipeline, merely stating that a contractor had been appointed to fix the problem and apologising for any inconvenience caused. No indication was given as to how long the work to repair the pipeline would take. The town’s taps, however, remained dry for the duration of the weekend and queues started forming once again at the AfriForum communal borehole in President Steyn Street as the water situation became critical for many. On Sunday morning, 1 May, the VDM released

Woman get ten years after trying to smuggle explosive into country Court News The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo has welcomed the sentencing of three Zimbabwean nationals in the Regional Court in Musina last week for the smuggling of explosives. The three, Loveness Mbele (31), Lodrick Chidhakwa (34) and Tongai Mpofu (33), were arrested on 11 January this year. “The three accused came into South Africa without being

in possession of travelling documents. They also did not pass through the Beitbridge Port of Entry and were not examined by an immigration officer,” said provincial NPA spokesperson Ms Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi. According to Malabi-Dzhangi, Mbele admitted to the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that the explosives found in their possession belonged to her, and that Lodrick and Tongai had only offered their assistance to carry the bags of explosives in return for payment as she had difficulty carrying them. “The bags contained six reels of detonating cord, 50 units of blasting cartridges and 65 units of connector capped fuses. On 3 March 2022, Mbele pleaded guilty to two counts related to the smuggling of explosives and immigration offences. Chidhakwa and Mpofu also pleaded guilty on charges of illegal immigration,” said Malabi-Dzhangi. In aggravation of sentence, State Advocate Patricia Dorothy Jacobs indicated to the court that the offences were serious, that illegal dealing in explosives had seriously increased and that syndicate kingpins used young ladies with small children as mules in an attempt to get the court’s sympathy. The accused and like-minded persons, she said, should be prevented from bringing explosives into South Africa. She further submitted that immigrants had little to no regard for the laws of South Africa. Furthermore, Jacobs stated, the country faced a big economic crisis and was barely keeping up with its own residents’ basic needs. The court agreed with the submissions of the State. Mbele was sentenced to 10 years’ direct imprisonment for the possession of explosives, 10 years for importing explosives and a fine of R5000 or three months’ imprisonment on a count of illegal immigration. Mbele’s sentence was ordered to run concurrently with the main count of 10 years direct imprisonment. Chidhakwa and Mpofu were sentenced to three months’ direct imprisonment or to pay a fine of R5000 each. “The NPA welcomes the sentence and the DPP, Advocate Ivy Thenga, commends the good work of the SANDF in Musina and Advocate Jacobs for a sterling job,’ said Malabi-Dzhangi.

another statement, informing residents that another pipe burst at booster pump number 3 would continue to result in water shortages in Louis Trichardt and Tshikota. “The contractor and Vhembe District technicians are busy fixing the burst pipelines at Extension 9 along N1 road and the burst pipeline at the booster pump station 03. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” the VDM’s statement read. By Tuesday morning, the town’s taps were still dry. The VDM was asked to give feedback on the situation and to explain the delay in restoring the town’s water supply. In response, VDM spokesperson Mr Moses Shibambu said that both the mainline pipe burst in Extension 9, as well as at booster station number 3 had been fixed, but that the mainline fixed in Extension 9 had burst again. At that stage, Shibambu said, VDM technicians had closed the

Mowkop Reservoir in Louis Trichardt to repair the burst pipe, but that they would continue to pump water directly into the supply pipeline to try and alleviate the water crisis. A couple of hours later, Shibambu confirmed that the burst pipe had been fixed again and that the VDM had started pumping water again. By Wednesday morning, residents from some parts in Louis Trichardt reported that water supply to their homes had been restored. Others, however, reported that their taps remained dry, not allowing them to wash, do laundry or flush their toilets. Why some parts of town have water and others do not remains unclear. What is clear is that residents should stock up on their water supply, following Eskom’s announcement on Tuesday that they had implemented Stage-2 load shedding. This will again cause interruptions in VDM’s water-pumping schedule, which has proven to cause water shortages in the past.

She is too weak to walk now, and very little is left of her eyesight, but her hearing is still strong and, although she speaks slowly, her mind is still sharp enough to communicate. She even shared some of her memories of the olden days. “A long, long time ago, we used to live in makeshift thatched huts; there were no houses like what you see today. Local Muslim community celebrates Eid-al-Fitr By Anton van Zyl

On Tuesday, members of the local Muslim community celebrated Eid-al-Fitr, which marks the end of the month-long dawn-tosunset fasting of Ramadan. This year, the celebrations started on a slightly different note, as non-Muslim members of the community were also invited to join the festivities and watch the sighting of the moon on Monday night at the Masjid Al Noor mosque. Ahmed Hasturk, the local Director of the Universal Islamic Cultural Trust (UICT), explained that the UICT had started a few new traditions in an effort to bring communities together. One of these was to invite families to bring a picnic basket and enjoy the sighting of the new moon with them. It also gave an opportunity to Muslim families to break their fasting period while relaxing in the gardens at the mosque. Members of the Muslim community celebrated Ramadan the past month, which includes a fasting period from dawn to sunset. During

Ramadan, a lot of emphasis is placed on charitable work in the community. “During the fasting period, we gathered together every Sunday at the Masjid Al Noor gardens to cook food and distribute these to more than 200 families, which included Muslim and non-Muslims families,” said Hasturk. The UICT also runs an Islamic pre-school facility at the mosque, which is the only one of its kind in town. “We provided iftar (dinner) for all the parents of the children at the school one night as part of the Ramadan activities,” Hasturk said. The UICT is an internationally registered non-profit organisation that, among their activities, also provides boarding schools for less-privileged children. Monday’s sighting of the moon introduced the new month, which means that the Eid celebrations could commence. “The tradition of bringing the community together is a big one in Cape Town and the UICT hopes to make this an annual gathering,” Hasturk added.

Mnr.

082 603 2419 of 015 516 4997 (tydens kantoorure).

After a long break due to the restrictions brought about the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, Parkrun South Africa has announced the restarting of their weekly events. Regarding this, Louis Trichardt’s weekly Parkrun will restart on Saturday, 7 May. A communique circulated to Parkrun members states that many may feel a bit nervous to restart. To ease fears, Parkrun South Africa urges organisers again to read through their Covid-19 framework that has

been supporting their 5km and junior events for some time now. They state that they will continue to operate under these guidelines until they are confident that removing them permanently has become appropriate. These guidelines include that all individuals taking part in the event must make sure that they are Covid-19 symptom-free before attending the event and that hand sanitisers must be used before and during the event.
