Suspected rhino poacher could not escape people’s fury

A bloodied and badly injured suspected poacher is taken away to hospital in an ambulance.

Enraged community members at Plange in the Malamulele area, who are tired of crime, unleashed their anger on the man whom they suspected to be a robber in the area. The incident happened on Sunday evening.

It is alleged the man found himself at the mercy of angry community members after running away from a police trap. It is alleged that he and another man were allegedly arranging to buy rhino horns

from a ranger.

The community, which has experienced many acts of crime of late and recently held meetings to discuss crime, saw red when the man was found in a house in the village. The man was severely attacked and left for dead.

The man, aged 35, is believed to be from Khubvi and is now in the Malamulele Hospital and under police guard. His friend, aged 39, is in police custody. Police spokesperson Col Ronél Otto said two suspected rhino poachers in their thirties were arrested after they allegedly attempted to

persuade a ranger in the Kruger National Park to kill and dehorn a rhino for them. They allegedly said it would be “easier” for a ranger to do so.

The ranger allegedly agreed, but told them that they would need to bring him a fire-arm as he could not shoot the animal with his official firearm. He then contacted the police and a meeting was arranged between the ranger and the suspects.

The meeting took place at Plange village near Malamulele on Sunday evening.

“The 39-year-old man was arrested during this controlled meeting and police confiscated a

30.06 hunting rifle as well as a vehicle. A second suspect, who realised what was happening, ran away and fled into the home of a woman in the village,” said Otto. The woman alerted members of the community, who then assaulted the suspect severely. He is currently in hospital in a serious but stable condition. The other suspect is due to appear in court soon. He will face charges of possession of an unlicensed fire-arm, as well as conspiracy to commit a crime. The second suspect will appear once he is sufficiently recovered.

Otto said investigations were continuing.

Mysterious fire and stones terrorise family Zoutnet scoops several top Lin awards A family from Makhura village near Vleifontein is being tormented by mysterious fires and stones that rain down unexpectedly on their house.

Limpopo Mirror visited the family last week, shortly after a fire destroyed a bed, chairs and books. The family members also complained that window panes were smashed by stones.

The owner of the house, Mr Samuel Makhura, explained what had happened during the latest incident. According to him, he was resting on his sofa with his wife, still trying to figure out what could be turning his life upside down, when he became aware of the smell of smoke.

On inspecting where the fire had emanated from, he was surprised to see smoke billowing out from one of the rooms. “When we went to that room, we found that the clothes and bed in my son’s room

were on fire,” he said.

“My wife managed to control the fire with water from a tap,” said Makhura. “I could not believe my eyes when a stone came flying from my sitting room and smashed a window pane. Since then, other stones and invisible objects keep on smashing my windows and the damage keeps on increasing on a daily basis.

The fire started again last Saturday afternoon in the same room and then again on Sunday afternoon. The fire was extinguished with the help of the neighbours, who were also keeping a watch over the house,” he said.

The family members now fear that a spell had been cast on the house, which is making their lives difficult. At the time of going to press, seven windows had already been damaged. The close family members were offering their moral support, but their

spirits were down as everyone seemed to be depressed by the events.

“I have lost valuable property and I am afraid I won’t be able to replace it with my small grant,” said Makhura, who has been sleeping under a nearby tree with his wife since the fires started. “I do not know why this happening.

I do not know who is behind this and I also do not know if I owe anybody anything. I have had enough of these fires, and our lives as a family have been turned upside down,” said Makhura.

He said religious leaders from different churches had visited them, but there has not been any change as the fire continues to wreak havoc. “We have sleepless nights here. How can one sleep when one does not know when the next fire will break out? Life is really bad here,” he said.

A community member, Ms Tshifhiwa Rambau, said that community structures were discussing the issue and several people had visited the family to pray for them. Rambau said that the family also need counselling as they were going through a tough and difficult time. “We appeal to anyone who can assist the family to come forward before the whole house is destroyed,” she said.

LiN Media’s efforts to uplift the profile of independently owned newspapers in the Limpopo Province culminated in the hosting of the group’s inaugural LiN Media Awards in Tzaneen the past weekend.

LiN Media was established not only to promote the interests of these newspapers, but also to uplift the standard of local journalism, amidst having to compete with conglomerates such as Caxton and Media 24. The Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror (Zoutnet) form part of this group of LiN publications, currently comprising nine publications. The other seven members are Bulletin (Tzaneen), Kruger2Canyon (Hoedspruit), Northern News (Mokopane and Lephalale), The Post (Bela-Bela) and The Beat (Bela-Bela), Die Kwêvoël (Thabazimbi) and Bushbuckridge News (Bushbuckridge).

The judging process was conducted by acclaimed professionals in die newspaper industry, including Dr Pedro Diederichs (retired), Fanie Groenewald (retired), Lizette Odendaal, Sholaine Govender-Bateman and Hilke Steenkamp (all from the Department of Journalism at the Tshwane University of Technology), as well as Gien Elsas (currently running the Caxton Cadet School). They had this to say, among other things, about the judging process: “We think you can be proud of the quality newspapers which all of you, from the most senior to the most junior reporters, sub-editors, lay-out artists, advertising and administrative staff, contribute to on a weekly basis. Your readers (and advertisers) are getting value for their money!”

The competition focussed on both advertising (production) and journalism, with the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror scooping up awards in both sections.

In the advertising section, Zoutnet’s Dallien Viljoen walked away with a third place in the category for Small Advertisements. Top honours in this category went to the team from The Post, while David Morrison from Bulletin was second.

Dallien also took a second place in the category for Large Advertisements. Here, the winner was David Morrison, with third place going to Dolla Költzan (Northern News).

Both the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror did exceptionally well in the categories for Best Front Pages and Newspaper of the Year, with the Zoutpansberger winning the Best Front Pages section and Limpopo Mirror in second place. The Post took overall third position in this section.

In the writing section, the Zoutpansberger secured two top-three finishes in the fiercely contested Hard News/Local Government Category, with Isabel Venter taking third place, Andries van Zyl coming second and Ingrid Pepler (The Post) first. Andries also came third in the Human Interest category. In this category, second place went to Valerie Celliers (Northern News) and first place once again to Ingrid.

No water for Makhado area on Friday Residents of the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area are warned that the region’s water supply will be interrupted on Friday, 7 December, for the whole day.

The Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) said that Makhado town and Tshikota might experience no water supply from 06:00 to 18:00 as leaks on the Albasini pipeline between the Albasinidam and the Mowcop reservoir needed to be repaired.

The leaks were noticed amidst

the VDM’s clearing of vegetation on the pipeline. The process is progressing well and about eight kilometres have been cleared so far. Local AfriForum chairperson Mr Wally Schultz asked residents to be patient during the long process to restore a consistent water supply to town.

“The Albasini pipeline had not been cleared for years. Now AfriForum and Vhembe got the job going! Dense bush made it impossible to detect leaks that have seen more than 50% of our

precious water wasted. Now the line can and will be walked every day. This and other AfriForum initiatives will help restore water to town, but to get there, repairs need to be done,” stated Schultz on Tuesday.

AfriForum is currently working hand in hand with VDM to ensure that the court order dates are honoured. AfriForum obtained a court order from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to enforce, among others, the denuding of the pipeline.

Queues resurface at border

MEC to investigate baby’s death The MEC for Heath and Social Development, Dr Norman Mabasa, promised a thorough investigation into allegations that a woman lost her baby in front of laughing nurses at a local hospital.

Ms Nominyikelo Mzimba (29) of Shihosani village outside Malamulele told Limpopo Mirror that she was recently taken to the Nkhesani Hospital in Giyani by her husband.

She experienced excruciating labour pains, she said.

According to her, she started to bleed and asked two nurses who were working the nightshift to help her to deliver her baby. “My child was stuck, because she was very big. When I cried for the two

nurses to help me, they said they were not there when I made the child and started laughing at me,” said Mzimba “My child only survived for a few minutes. These nurses are cruel,” she added.

A nurse, who did not want to be named, said the child haddied because her lungs had collapsed because she had been trapped in her mother.

Mabasa said if his investigations revealed any form of neglect, his department would take very serious steps. “We are very disturbed about the allegation of negligence and will dispatch our team to investigate the allegation as soon as possible,” he added.

Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager in charge of Beit Bridge Border Post, Mr Charles Gwede, confirmed the latest development, which he also attributed to an influx of travellers, heading to South Africa for shopping.

“Most people got their bonuses and they are going to South Africa for shopping, which is why we have long queues at the border. However, on our side we are managing and people are moving smoothly,” he said.

Long queues at the Beit Bridge border are a common sight, particularly during month end as many Zimbabweans cross to South Africa for shopping. The Beit Bridge Border Post is the busiest inland port of entry in sub-Saharan Africa. Commercial trucks destined for East and Central African countries such as Tanzania and Zambia also pass through the border post.

The Beit Bridge Border Post was heavily congested on Monday as scores of travellers were flocking into South Africa for shopping ahead of the festive period.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the border post on the South African side, travellers could be seen queuing outside the immigration tent. Buses and light vehicles had virtually occupied the entire parking space, resulting in congestion.

On the Zimbabwean side, however, the queues were manageable compared to South Africa, where meandering queues stretched for about 2km. Police and immigrations officials had a hard time as they tried to control the queues.

Some travellers, particularly the local residents, had to cancel their trips to the neighbouring country, due to delays. “I had to return home, because the queues are just unbearable. It looks like South African immigration officials are not keen on serving travellers, unlike on the Zimbabwean side, where the queues were faster,” said Ms Jane Ndou of Dulibadzimu. Another traveller, Mr Jabulani Ndlovu of Bulawayo, said: “I spent several hours in the queues on the South African side of the border.

In fact, I arrived at Beit Bridge Border at around 06:00 and border officials cleared me very fast. On entering the other side of the border, it was horrible as it was characterised by long winding queues. I ended up leaving the border for Musina at around midnight.” Most of the travellers who spoke to Limpopo Mirror said they were travelling to South Africa for early Christmas shopping as way of

Four years for having sex with under-aged A 24-year-old Beit Bridge man employed in South Africa was sentenced to an effective two years in jail on Monday for having sex with a 15-year-old local girl.

The man, who was employed at a farm near Musina, was convicted on his own plea of guilty

by Magistrate Gloria Takundwa.

He was sentenced to four years in jail, of which two years were conditionally suspended for five years.

In passing the sentence, the

magistrate noted that there was a high prevalence of cases of that nature and said a custodial sentence would serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders.

In mitigation, Ndou pleaded with the court to be lenient with him, arguing that the girl had lied to him about her age. He also told the court that he had been tempted into having sex with the victim since she had eloped with him and the two were sharing a room.

The prosecutor, Mr Tawanda

Musina, said that sometime in September, Ndou approached the complainant. He then proposed sex to the girl and she accepted.

It was testified that two months later, Ndou started inviting the girl to his room where they would have sex.

Some local community members discovered the affair and alerted the girl’s parents, who quizzed her until she told them about the affair. A report was made to the police, leading to Ndou’s arrest.

Life sentence for rape The Sibasa Regional Court sentenced a 59-yearold father to life in prison for raping his daughter. The incident relating to the case took place on 14 April last year at Midinungu.

The court heard that the man had sent his 12-year-old daughter to remove the sheets from his bed, so that her mother could wash them. While she was inside, he entered the bedroom and switched off the lights. He then ordered her to take off her pants and raped her.

It was testified that there was a persistent knock on the door, which the man ignored and continued raping her. He only stopped when he heard his wife’s voice.

“He placed his hand over my mouth and told me to stop calling out,” said the victim’s mother.

She testified that the man then told her that it had all come to him like a dream, which misled him into raping his own daughter. He said that he had never planned on desecrating his daughter in such a cruel manner.

The girl’s mother rushed out to look for her and found that she had locked herself inside the outdoor pit toilet. The following morning, all family members were called for a meeting. The father apologised and said that it was a temptation which had only entered his mind after he had consumed two bottles of beer.

The accused’s wife and her three children had since moved from the man’s house and live in a remote village.

Members of the Thohoyandou Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) expressed their satisfaction at the outcome of the case. “Dealing with a case where a father had raped his own daughter is a difficult thing,” said investigating officer Lt Tshiwela Masianuga. “We are calling for all people to act against any form of abuse against women and children.”

After working in the public service for 30 solid years, a resident of Malamulele Township, Mr Nyiko Elvis Tinghitsi, felt that enough was enough.

A farewell function, during which Mr Tinghitsi said goodbye to his colleagues at the Department of Roads and Transport, was held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre last Thursday, November 29. He joined the public service as a driver in July 1982. In January 1985, he was promoted to the post of general foreman. He again moved vertically in 1987, when he was promoted to the post of roads superintendent.

The year 1991 saw him gain another promotion.

This time around, he occupied the office of the chief roads superintendent. In 2006, Tinghitsi was promoted to project manager, the position he held until his retirement. According to him, his health started to deteriorate over the past year, and that compelled him to apply for ill-health retirement.

Speakers who shared the podium during the ceremony described Tinghitsi as a loyal public servant who will leave a gap that will take a long time to fill.

Bursaries for disadvantaged children The Musina municipality, which has recently been in the news for service delivery protests, has good news for it residents.

The municipality announced a new bursary scheme for deserving matriculants.

Previously, the municipality gave the best students from all the secondary schools money for registration at tertiary institutions.

Due to a lack of continuous financial support, many of the recipients had dropped out of the institutions.

Musina Mayor Carol Phiri recently briefed journalists about the new bursary scheme.

"After making some reviews, we came to the conclusion that the money could be better utilized in education to increase the pool for bursaries and this is the reason we have changed the awards to a bursary scheme," said Phiri.

She added that their aim was to assist deserving students from needy families. "We want to help where there is a need. We have decided to see to it that the students are sustained through-

out their studies at tertiary level, but that will depend on the performance of the individual student," said Phiri.

According to her, they have put aside R100 000 for this purpose “and with the help of our business partners, we hope the amount will increase.”

She added that education was the way to the future. “These children we are helping are the future of this country and they will take leading positions when we go,” she added.

Medupi’s first 24 hour coal run a success The Medupi Power Station commenced its first 24-hour performance testing that ran at maximum capacity for the delivery of coal to Medupi Power Station from the Grootegeluk mine last Tuesday.

The Grootegeluk mine, as the sole source of coal for Medupi, first delivered coal to a 10 000 ton silo, from where the coal was then moved via the overland coal conveyor system to the Medupi coal stockyard. This conveyor is the sole conveyor supply line to Medupi and is critical for sustained coal delivery to the power station.

The overland conveyor system consists of two conveyors, one conveyor that is 4,3 km long and

the other one 1,1 km long - giving a total length of 5,4 km. The conveyor belt is 2.1 metres wide and is capable of carrying 4 000 tons per hour and runs at a speed of 2.86 metres per second.

The overland conveyor feeds coal via a transfer house onto the coal stacker conveyor, which is 1 km long, and this conveyor feeds the coal stacker itself, which is designed to stack coal onto seasonal or live stockpiles.

Last Tuesday’s performance test delivered approximately 120 000 tons of coal over a period of 30 hours, 24 hours of which it ran coal at maximum load.

Civil works for this coal plant project began in July 2010 and substantial work was completed

in March 2011. Mechanical works followed thereafter and this first phase of the works took 28 months to complete.

Civil works were performed by Civcon/G4, Karrena-Concor JV and Basil Read, the mechanical plant was installed by Thyssen Krupp and Rula Bulk Materials Handling. Actom installed all cabling to power the plants.

On completion, Medupi Power Station will be the fourth-largest coal plant and the largest drycooled power station in the world. The completion of this power plant will go a long way in meeting increasing electricity demand and ensuring continued supply of electricity to the nation.

New PAC chairperson aims at 50 branches in 2014 The newly elected PAC chairperson in Vhembe, Mr Ezisani Madzunya, has promised to work with his team to lure as many new members as possible and launch many new branches by 2014.

This was during the seventh Vhembe regional congress held at the Maname Country Lodge a fortnight ago.

Held under the theme Awakening of the Fire Eater, the congress was attended by 37 branches and 352 delegates from around the district. Immediately after being sworn in as chairperson, Madzunya did not waste time and announced that elections had come and gone and that it was time to get to serious business.

“We have a mammoth task ahead of us to make sure that our presence is felt everywhere, whether it be in government circles or in villages. We have to make an impact. This we can do by mobilizing our people to the organisation and making sure that we have branches everywhere around the district,” said Madzunya.

He said they would soon be embarking on a recruitment drive and were aiming at gathering 25 000 active members who would be eligible to vote by 2014. He said he was sure that working as a unit with other executive

members and the general membership of the organization, they could make a difference in people’s lives.

“We have a mandate as an organisation to see to it that our people are free, they do not go to bed hungry, they do not swim in a dam of poverty and they have land which they can call theirs. We have to do away with nepotism; they should have shelter and also fight unemployment,” he added.

He also urged members to be united and not to be intimidated, to tell the truth and not allow the ruling party to use taxes for the advancement of capitalist agendas. They should also not be afraid to face incompetent municipal managers.

The other members who were elected are: Thomani Thabela (deputy chairperson), Mbangiseni Tshivhase (secretary), Itani Netsharotha (deputy secretary), Richard Makhaninga (treasurer) and Avhatakali Netshiavha (organiser). Early Christmas for ailing gogo Gogo Elinah Muvhulawa Ndou of Lambani outside Thohoyandou could not believe her eyes when Government gave her a surprise visit at the weekend.

Ndou (65), who is bedridden and makes use of a walker, lives in a dilapidated mud hut which is not conducive to her health.

A fortnight ago she received an unusual visit by Thulamela’s first citizen, Mayor Grace Mahosi, who was accompanied by members of her executive council, senior management officials of the municipality, councillors and ward committee members.

They did not come empty handed.

She brought along groceries, which included tin cans, sugar and mealiemeal, which would see her through Christmas. Mahosi was on a tour of the village before the start of a public participation programme, which later took place at the local sports grounds.

She also promised to build a toilet that would ease the gogo’s plight.

Handing over the groceries, Mahosi said they were in the village to gather first-hand information about the living conditions in the village. “We are here to see how you are coping.

We heard about the condition you are in and we decided to come and see you. There are many things that we do not know when we are in our offices,” she added. In response, the ecstatic granny said she had never in her wildest dreams thought that such important people would visit her. “I cannot believe this is happening. I am sick and no one seems to care about me, but then the high-powered people from government come and visit me,” she said.

From the gogo’s home, the mayor and her entourage went to the local sports grounds where a large crowd of villagers had gathered to present her with some challenges. In recent weeks, employees of the Makhado Municipality have been spotted, busily fixing roads in town.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed this week that the municipality has embarked on a special programme to fix some of the most dilapidated streets in town.

Streets that form part of the programme include Protea, Waterbessie, Stubbs, Munnik and Anderson. Re-

pair work includes general cleaning and the installation of concrete curbs and road markings. In some cases, like Waterbessie Street, large parts have been re-tarred. Other streets that will also receive some much-needed attention will be President and Grobler Street. In addition, signboards that were uprooted during the freak storm that swept through the town in the beginning of November are also being fixed, together with the streets.

The accused stands trial on charges of allegedly raping two girls, aged 15 and 18, on 1 January this year at the Hubyeni Shopping Centre at Elim. On another count, he allegedly forced a 15-year-old girl to have sexual intercourse with him at Mpheni Block D2, on 16 June 2011. On 17 December 2011, an 18-year-old woman was raped at Mahonisi section

of Waterval and the victim identified Ndou as the person who had raped her. The court postponed Ndou’s case to 10 December, but he quickly notified the court that he would be appearing in court in Gauteng on that date. He had at least five other cases of rape in Mamelodi and Villieria against him. All these crimes were allegedly committed between 2009 and 2012.

His case was eventually postponed to 21 January 2013 for further investigation and for the accused to seek the assistance of a legal representative. He remains in custody.

Innovative undertaker Bono Sigidi buried The late Prof Bono Ramaano Lizhakandila Sigidi, an innovative funeral undertaker who revolutionised the funeral industry in Limpopo, was given a hero’s funeral last weekend.

Sigidi (69) died in the Pretoria Heart Hospital a fortnight ago.

The philanthropic undertaker, who founded Tshitshithe Funeral Undertakers, was laid to rest at the family graveyard behind his funeral parlour.

The graveyard is one of his innovative ways of saving space and all his family members have been buried there.

Many who crossed paths with him attended the funeral. Among the mourners were almost all undertakers in Limpopo, including Dingaan Thobela of Rose Funerals, who came all the way from Gauteng to pay his last respects. Xitsonga music maestro and multi-award-winning artist Thomas Chauke was also in attendance. King Toni Mphephu of the Vhavenda was represented by Vhokhotsimunene Vho Japan Ramabulana.

Speaking during the funeral, former worldboxing-champion-turned-businessman, Dingaan The Rose of Soweto Thobela, hailed Sigidi, saying he was selfless and assisted many in setting up their businesses.

Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi urged other businesspeople to emulate Sigidi. “Sigidi was humble. Let us emulate him when we do things. Let us not seek praises and fame, but add value,” she said.

The deceased's eldest son, Ndivhuwo, told mourners that although his father’s death was a big loss, he was encouraged by the fact that he had taught them the ropes of the business while he was still alive. “I can say it here in front of these people that we will take this business to another level in honour of our late father,” he said.

Show is a unique marketing opportunity Musina Town came to a standstill during the mayoral parade, leading to the official opening of the Musina Annual Show last Thursday.

With top-of-the-range vehicles supplied by Messina Toyota and a sizzling performance by the De Beers Field Band, people in town forgot their daily chores for a while to watch the spectacular event.

This year’s show attracted visitors from all over the country, as well as neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique.

With exhibitors ranging from companies to government institutions jostling for spaces to exhibit their wares, irresistible

attractions formed part of the show throughout the three days.

Up-and-coming entrepreneurs also had a splendid time marketing their small businesses to the public.

The show also provided an ideal platform for small business to network with government institutions, companies and other organizations, which may consider appointing them as service providers. For entertainment, there were musical groups, a merry-go-round, cave of horror, go-carts, miniature trains and a giant slide. The public also had the opportunity to buy unique items at affordable prices at the flea market.

When officially opening the

show, Mayor Carol Phiri said the Musina Annual Show targeted people across the cultural spectrum.

“Our show offers exhibitors a cost-effective means to trade in an experiential environment where consumers can interact with their brand. The fact that a large percentage of consumers tend towards cash buying means exhibitors enjoy an improved cash flow as a direct result, with follow-up business after the show adding a valuable rounding off of this powerful marketing exercise,” she added According to her, the show gives an opportunity to exhibitors to market their products directly to the public.

Vehicle hi-jacker gets ten years in jail The Regional Court in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) sentenced a 41-year-old man to 10 years’ imprisonment on a charge of car hijacking.

The incident took place on 13 August this year and the case was finalised last Tuesday (27 November). According to the spokesperson for the Levubu police, W/O Solly Mukhola, Thomas Mashava had confronted

a man and forced him out of a Toyota twin cab. He threatened the driver with an unknown iron weapon, after which he took the car and drove away.

The stolen car was later involved in an accident at the Maake residential area near Tzaneen.

A police investigation linked Mashava to the case and he was subsequently arrested. He ap-

peared before the magistrate’s court many times before the finalisation of the case.

“We feel that the investigating team and the court have done their job,” said Mukhola.

“The sentence will send a resounding message to other would-be car hi-jackers in our area.”

Mashava is a resident of Kur­ huleni near Ha-Masia.

Rambau’s case yet again placed on hold Senior regional magistrate Ronnie Rambau will get to spend another Christmas at home, pending the outcome of his corruption trial.

The final score in his corruption trail remains to be settled.

Rambau, accused of accepting a bribe to influence the outcome of a court case, once again appeared with his co-accused, attorney TE Lubisi and state prosecutor Estene Willemse, in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Lubisi was expected to start testifying for the defence, but the case was put on hold when Rambau’s advocate, Mr Johan Hatting, withdrew from the record. According to information available, Hatting withdrew because he had not received payment from Rambau.

In addition, Lubisi’s attorney also told the court that he had not had time to familiarize himself with the case. He is the third attorney that Lubisi has appointed

since the beginning of the trial in 2010.

In the meantime, the Magistrate’s Commission is very cautious to answer any questions put to them regarding Rambau’s suspension. The Zoutpansberger was, however, able to confirm that Rambau is still provisionally suspended and still receiving his full magistrate’s salary.

The three men’s case was postponed again, this time until 9 April next year.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is currently experiencing a severe shortage of blood as is traditionally the case at this time of the year.

“Currently, we have only 1.5 days of blood available and as we go further into the holiday period, we know that we will not be able to meet the demand for blood by patients.

So we are appealing to all our donors who have missed their donation in recent months to please make some time to donate blood, as the blood stocks are near crisis levels,” says Vanessa Raju, communications manager of the SANBS. The SANBS’s aim is to maintain a stock level of five days, with 3000 units collected per day to meet the demand. At present, they are experiencing difficulty achieving this, which has been mainly due to the fact that their mobile drives, at schools and universities, as well as organisations, are almost impossible at this time of year.

“This puts severe pressure on the SANBS and in times like these we request all hospitals and medical personnel to hold back on planned surgeries, something we are trying to prevent at all costs. We would need to up our daily

target of blood collected to anything around 4 000 to 5000 units per day countrywide until we reach the five-day stock level,” says Raju.

Campfire project a handy source of income for council The Beit Bridge Rural District Council has received US$169 900 from its hunting concessions under the local Community Areas Management Programme for Indigenous Resources (Campfire) project this year.

Speaking during a handover ceremony of the proceeds to the beneficiaries last Tuesday, the local authority’s chief executive officer, Mr Albert Mbedzi said they distributed a total of US$81 516 to the local communities. This is a sharp increase, compared to last year, when communities received $59 680 under the Campfire community-share scheme.

“This year’s hunting season was the best for the council in terms of safari hunts. The communities that benefitted include Tshikwalakwala, Tshipise, Masera, Shashe, Nottingham area, Pingwe Project in Sentinel, which covers areas in wards seven, eight and nine, and River Ranch in ward six. Nottingham received US$24 254 while Tshikwalakwala, Shashe, Tshabili and River Ranch received US$16 651, US$4 800, US$9600 and US$6216 respectively. Masera received US$960 and Tshipise US$480.

Last year, the local authority realised US$124 335 under the Campfire project and distributed US$59 680 to the communities. Campfire is a community-based natural-resourcesmanagement programme developed by the government in 1989. The programme is principally designed to promote the sustainable utilisation of natural resources and preserving the rich natural heritage of the country, through the generation of income for local rural communities.

The programme operates with the support of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, as part of its conservation function

in rural areas. “Under the Campfire project, we intend to conscientise our people on the importance of wildlife conservation as well as help in protecting it from poachers. It also makes wildlife valuable to local communities because it is an economically and ecologically sound land use,” he said. Mbedzi said the bulk of the money would go towards major rural developmental projects.

The chairperson of the Ward 6 Campfire project, Mr Michael Muleya, said the money would go a long way in rehabilitating clinics, schools and boreholes, among other community development projects.

The chairperson of the council’s committee on natural resources management, Cllr Joseph Itani Muleya, urged local rural communities to refrain from poaching, adding that there was a need to educate people continuously on the importance of wildlife conservation.

“We need to conserve our wildlife so that our communities continue to benefit from the proceeds under the Campfire project. We also intend to train community resource monitors on key wildlife-management issues as a way of safeguarding against wildlife poachers,” he said.

come true for me. I have been longing to have an author who writes in the vernacular in my stable and Mukondeleli came as an answer to my prayers,” she said.

According to her, the project was not easy as she was also new in the industry, but with the help of other established writers and publishers, the project was finally realised and completed. “I am very impressed by the reaction from the general public, who have welcomed the new book with open arms and are giving it rave reviews. This is a feather in the cap of our young company to have come up with a very innovative book like this one”.

The editor of the book, Mr Daniel Alugumi Makhavhu, who is also a close friend of the author, says that the book is relevant to the community as it adjures people not to be corrupt in the workplace and not to be jealous of others.

The author, Solomon Mukondeleli, said he was excited about the turn of events. “This is my first book and was motivated by what I see around me. I am very happy that people supported me in this fashion. This is a boost and will encourage me to start another project,” he said.

The vision of young Limpopo publisher Edzani Tshikovhi of Mulangawashu Printing & Publishers of publishing books written in her mother tongue is fast becoming a reality.

She recently hosted a successful book launch event at Fondwe Village in Nzhelele at the weekend, where the book Dwadze li Sina Nanga was launched.

The title, to the uninformed reader, might sound as if it is about a deadly disease like AIDS, but this is not the case. The book by Tshivenda author Itani Solomon Mukondeleli is an attempt to warn the readers and leaders about the dangers of corruption, nepotism and other ills committed by leaders in the workplace and higher offices.

In the book, the author succeeds in introducing Vho Phundulu, who is the principal of Lotavha Primary School.

The principal is full of jealousy and ignores all the good work that is done by his colleague, Vho Mmbengwa, whom he starts to hate.

Tshikovhi, who recently unearthed and launched another new author, Thomas Magosha, said she was very happy to have published her first Tshivenda author. “This is a dream

Leopards away to collect more points Black Leopards believe that they will come back with a full compliment of points from their away fixture against Mamelodi Sundowns. The two teams will meet in their Absa Premiership League match at the Lucas Morepe Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon.

Sundowns are now under the guidance of a new coach, Mr Pitso Mosimane.

The former Bafana Bafana coach was officially appointed on Monday this week, shortly after the dismissal of Mr Johan Neeskens. Neeskens was shown the exit after Sundowns lost 0-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic in

the final of the Telkom KO last Saturday evening.

Sundowns are perched in the relegation zone on the log, while Leopards will be fighting it with the aim of maintaining their position. They are currently in the eighth position.

In the other matches that will also be played on Sunday afternoon, Free State Stars will host Bloemfontein Celtic at the Charles Mopedi Stadium. Bidvest Wits and Amazulu will meet at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Arsenal was the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned.

Local technology wins African award What started off as a “sideline” project at the Limpopo Mirror a few years ago, has now received international recognition.

The AdBooker system that was locally developed is one of the winners of the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC).

The names of the 20 winners in the competition were announced last week during the African Editors’ Forum’s annual general meeting held in Rwanda. The competition boasts a total of $1 million in funding and technical support to the digital journalism projects.

ANIC is the largest fund for digital journalism experimentation in Africa and is designed to encourage the finding of solutions to the business, distribution and workplace challenges that face the media industry.

A jury of 15 international media strategists, technology innovators, and funding experts evaluated more than 500 project plans before selecting winners from a shortlist of 40 projects.

“Africa’s media face serious challenges, and each of our winners tries to solve a real-world problem that journalists are grappling with. This includes the public’s growing concern about the manipulation and accuracy of online content, plus concerns around the security of communications and of whistleblowers or journalistic sources,” says Justin Arenstein, who manages ANIC as part of a wider digital innovation program with Africa’s largest association of

media owners and operators, the African Media Initiative (AMI). Winning projects will receive cash grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, plus additional technological support from a team of four full-time developers at AMI’s jAccelerator lab in Kenya, and business development support from some of the world’s top media strategists affiliated with the World Association of Newspapers & News Publishers (WANIFRA). “ANIC believes that all projects have the potential to either be replicated by media elsewhere in Africa, or to be scaled up across the continent, to create wide and sustained impact,” says Justin. Peter Barron, Google’s Director of External Relations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa said: “We want to see journalism flourish in the digital age in Africa and the African News Innovation Challenge has helped spur some really exciting projects from across the continent. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects unfold and to working further with African journalists who are using technologies to gather and tell important stories.” ANIC’s founding partners include Google, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the U.S. State Department, the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) and the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WANIFRA).

The local project, AdBooker,

started off in 2004 when Zoutnet, publishers of the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror, realised the need for a centralised booking system for adverts appearing in the newspapers.

Their web developer, William Stam, was tasked to develop such a system. Much against the trends of that time, he developed a web-based application. This had the advantage of being accessible via the Internet on almost any platform.

Since 2004, the AdBooker system has been implemented in a number of newsrooms countrywide and proved to be a trusted tool for newspaper managers. In 2012, the system was completely redeveloped and the latest software programming technology was used to make it even more robust, with added features. The revamped AdBooker was entered as a project in the African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC).

The next step would be to make it available to more publishers, especially the smaller independent newspapers throughout southern Africa.

“This is also why we are so delighted with the ANIC award,” says Anton van Zyl, manager of Zoutnet. “Our biggest challenge is to set up a research and design team that can do further technology development for small publishers.

We need to secure the future sustainability of such a team, because independent publishers cannot be left behind insofar as development is concerned.”

Dynamos are still to win a league match this season. They have played eight league matches to date. As part of their many ways to address the ugly situation, the club appointed the former Platinum Stars’ head coach, Mr Owen da Gama, as the team’s new head coach last week. Dynamos must win the match in order to restore their pride and to move out of the relegation zone.

They are currently lying at the bottom of the log, with only two points in hand.

The other match that will also be played on Sunday will be between Witbank Spurs and Blackburn Rovers at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank.

Maximum points for Western Stars Benny’s Care Soccer Academy lost 1-2 to Madombidzha Western Stars in their Safa Vhembe SAB match at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

Both teams started the match with vigour and tried to outsmart their opponents.

Two of Stars’ key players, Lufuno Ndou and Matari Nesthidzivhe, were cautioned with yellow cards in the 15th

and 18th minute respectively.

The yellow cards, however, did not dampen the team’s fighting spirit. The wheel of fortune turned against Benny’s in the 20th minute. Their defender, Takalani Muleba, failed to keep the ball and Skapie Matuba scored easily. The members of his team’s technical staff could not forgive him for the blunder and he gave way to Mutshidzi Nemaxwi.

Stars scored their second goal via Daniel Nkosi. He received a beautiful pass from Percy Munonoka. The half-time score was 2-0 in favour of Stars.

Benny’s did not press the panic button, despite the fact that their fans were becoming impatient. Their solitary goal came in the 85th minute.

Maweja take United Brothers to the cleaners The newly formed Maweja Takers FC collected maximum points at the expense of Duthuni United Brothers, when they beat them 2-0 in their SAB League match at the Tshakhuma Mulangaphuma grounds on Saturday.

Takers dominated the proceedings in all departments, with their midfielders, Khumbudzo Muvhango and Musa Nedzamba, creating dangerous passes from behind. Takers took the lead in the 24th minute. Vhusihawe Likhanya caught the keeper of Brothers, Nditsheni Sigaba, off guard and blasted in a rocket from close range. The goal came after a mix-up in Brothers’ danger area.

Takers were the first to introduce a new face.

They replaced Ndishavhelafhi Tshitangoni with Takalani Kwinda seven minutes into the second half. The keeper of United Brothers, Nditsheni Sigaba, was booked for a continued argument with the referee.

United Brothers suffered a big blow when they lost defender Johannes Mudau, who left the pitch with a pulled muscle. He was replaced with Mulweli Mathisa.

Khumbudzo Muvhango of Takers missed a fortune in the 67th minute. He beat the offside trap and shot straight to the keeper, who executed a brilliant save. Tshifhuriwi ready to revive Dynamos The newly appointed head coach of Dynamos FC, Mr Owen “Rubberdol” Da Gama, is adamant that his team will soon be a force to be reckoned with. The former coach of Orlando Pirates, Bloemfontein Celtic and Platinum Stars joined the Giyani outfit last week.

Thifhuriwi, as he is also known, joins Dynamos at a time when things are moving from bad to worse in the camp of the pride of Giyani. They have played seven league matches, without a victory, only sharing the points on two occasions.

Da Gama takes over from the former assistant coach of Black Leopards, Mr Joel Masutha, who has been the caretaker coach since the beginning of the season.

He was on the team’s technical bench when his side lost 1-2 to FC Cape Town in their NFD League match at the Giyani Sta-

dium last Sunday.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror earlier this week, Da Gama revealed that there are certain departments which need immediate attention. He stated that he would give every player enough chance to prove himself in the next four matches. He further indicated that he will bring in more quality players when the registration window opens next month. “For now, there is nothing much I can do, except to work with what I have, since the registration window is closed for now,” said Da Gama. He stated that he would work with Masutha as his assistant since Masutha had a better knowledge of the players.

When confirming Da Gama’s appointment, the chairman of the club, Mr Pat Malabela, said that he was happy that the esteemed coach had at long last agreed to guide the team.

According to Malabela, convincing Mr Da Gama to join Ri khomeni ri nga peli was not an easy task. He further revealed that he was not going to put pressure on Mr Da Gama to produce good results overnight, saying the coach would be given enough chance to rebuild the team at his own pace.

Legendary musician gets recognised Years ago, it was not easy to record Tshivenda music as music companies did not believe it could sell.

One man single-handedly changed that mindset, when he recorded the first Tshivenda album. Against all expectations, it went multi-platinum.

In 1986, legendary musician Dan Tshanda released a massive hit, Peacock, which then became something like a national anthem.

Tshanda, of Splash fame, went on to produce hit after hit and formed very successful groups like Matshikos, The Dalom Kids, and Patricia Majalisa, among

others.

The groups were unified under the Dalom Music label.

Tshanda produced more than 20 albums with Splash and many others with other groups. He is widely travelled and has toured almost the whole of Africa. Of late, the music icon is not heard much locally but has endeared himself to fans in Botswana, where he is well established and his music is selling like hot cakes.

Throughout his career, he received many accolades and awards but had basically been forgotten back home in

Limpopo.

A fortnight ago, the veteran artist was over the moon when the Tshivenda Music Awards honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his efforts in taking Tshivenda music to greater heights.

"I have received many awards locally and internationally, but have not received anything from my people back here in Limpopo. I am elated to have been honoured while I am still alive,” he added.

Tshanda said he was busy recording and his fans couldexpect something new in 2013.

Hawks arrest 13 company directors The Hawks Anti-Corruption Task Team has arrested 13 company directors and a senior manager within the Department of Road and Transport, Mmakgomo Kgosana, during a two-day sting operation.

The arrests follow an investigation into allegations of fraud to the value of R63 million paid by the Department of Roads and Transport early last year over a two-month period.

In custody for stokvel theft A 40-year-old woman was arrested after investigations by the SAPS at Levubu indicated that she may be linked to a case of robbery, where R28 000 was taken from the local stokvel's treasurer.

The police reckon Vhulahani Ndou of Tshakhuma, a member of a women's club or stokvel, may have planned the robbery at the house of Mrs Joyce Mukwevho at TshakhumaLuvhalani. The incident took place on 3 October, just past midnight, when Mukwevho and her daughter, Fulufhelo (19), were severely beaten when two intruders demanded money from

them. The thieves used an iron bar to force the kitchen door open and then assaulted the two ladies until they handed them the R28 000.

The money belonged to the stokvel.

Three men, Freddy Mulovhedzi (55), Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi (22) and Lufuno Mavhunge (29), were later arrested and charged with the robbery.

The police traced the mobile phone which was taken from the victims' house during the incident and found Mulovhedzi (Jr) in possession of the said stolen phone at Manamani village near Tshakhuma.

According to the information made available to Limpopo Mirror, Ndou was allegedly standing under a tree watching while the robbery and assault took place. Joyce and her daughter were seriously injured during the robbery and Joyce was consequently hospitalised for six day. Mulovhedzi (Sr) is currently on parole, after serving more than 10 years in jail for a similar crime. He is also father to his co-accused, Fulufhelo Mulovhedzi, while Mavhunge is his son-in-law.

All four accused appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate's Court on 27 November. The case was postponed to 12 Accused in stokvel money robbery: Vhulahani December for further investigation.

Cedric Phukuje (Morolong Construction), Calvin Legodi (Sekgobokgobo Trading), Hlangeleni Phasha (Phetlako Construction), Precious Lekolwane (Bara Trading Enterprise), Mabina Ratshidi (Bingo Trading Enterprise), Denis Koza (Denrop) and Mulalo Nelwamondo (Courtesy Caterers). All of them appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court and were released on bail of between R5 000 and R10 000. Their case was postponed until 29 January next year.

On Thursday, 29 November, a further six suspects, aged be-

tween 19 and 50, were arrested.

They were Betty Mashahane (Morolong Enterprise), Tebadi Foromo (TC Foromo Trading Enterprise), Tshepo Malema (Arandi Trading Enterprise), Portia Sebela (Tsheke Trading Enterprise), Calton Marule (Phaladi Civil Construction) and Sekgobokgobo Ledodi (Sekgobo Trading Enterprise). They appeared in the same court, were all granted R5 000 bail and have to appear again on 30 January next year. According to Hawk spokesperson Capt Paul Ramaloko, more arrests are expected.

“The line was damaged some months ago when the municipality connected a neighbouring building’s sewer line to the main sewer line. This caused gravel to constantly leak into the line (and blocking it),” said Mr Holmwood. According to Holmwood, the Makhado Municipality was notified about the problem a long time ago. “Despite numerous undertakings to attend to the problem, they (the municipality) have failed to take the necessary steps to ensure that the sewer lines are adequately repaired,” continued Mr Holmwood.

Synergy Income Fund Limited said that they are very concerned about the constant soil leakage into the sewer line as this could result in the formation of a sink hole, which could impact on the structural integrity of the provincial road which runs above the sewer line in question.

“We have afforded the municipality a final opportunity to rectify the problem by 28 November 2012,” he said, but did not disclose what steps Synergy Income Fund Limited might take if the municipal had not “rectified” the problem by the due date.

The smelly liquid mess runs through a black pipe coming from below one of the security doors and then pours fluids onto the walkway at the back of the complex.

It seems as if the sewage is intended for the drain down the walkway on the left hand side, right next door to one of the complaining residents.

“I am losing customers who say they cannot enjoy food in a smelly place,” said Asire Degefa (29), who operates a small restaurant nearby.

Mr Holmwood further added that he feels their rights to basic municipal services are being denied and this is negatively affecting their centre. “To date we have incurred costs in excess of R200 000 trying to resolve this issue,” he said.

“This pipe has been affecting us and residents for a very long time by now.” said one business operator in the centre, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

When contacted for comment last Tuesday, spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality Mr Louis Bobodi said that they are aware of the problem and that they have “referred the matter to the Vhembe District Municipality”.

The Hubyeni centre is currently the only upmarket shopping centre in Elim.

Basel and Stars in league clash Libago wins gold in Lesotho

Basel FC are geared to continue from where they left off last Saturday, when they meet Masesetjane All Stars in their Safa Second Division League match at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Basel crushed Ray Pillars 4-1 at the Seshego Stadium, a score which the club’s spokesperson, Mr Vhutshilo Makhado, says they will double at the expense of All Stars tomorrow.

All Stars must keep a close eye on the Basel scoring machines, Velile Mdaka and Walter Ramulondi, or else they will be buried alive.

Another match which is expected to attract a huge number of spectators will be between Rospa United and the unstoppable Magezi FC. It will be a home fixture for Rospa United. Magezi are one of the close contenders for the league championship.

Residents of Musina and the surrounding areas will enjoy entertaining football at their

doorstep.

Their home team, Nobela All Stars, will host Winners Park at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium. Nobela All Stars are battling to find a winning combination this season.

Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, congratulated Libago on having represented the municipality and province in Lesotho.

One of Libago’s main supporters and a youth developer, Ms Grace Ramabulana, asked businesspeople to sponsor Libago trips, so that he can participate in more races.

“He’s got talent and he needs financial support to reach where many professional athletes are today,” Ramabulana.

Athlete of the year Dakalo Ramabulana of Soutpansberg Primary School is the school´s athlete of the year. He received his awards during a ceremony at the school last week.

A local long-distance runner, Thikhathali Libago (20), performed well and finished the 21,1km race during the Lesotho High Altitude Marathon in second place.

The international road race was held in Mokgotlong, Lesotho, last Saturday and Libago completed the race in 69:00. He received a gold medal and a cash prize.

“I am happy to see myself achieving this much,” he says. He adds that he had qualified to participate in Lesotho when he won the Goss & Balfe South Coast Marathon &
