I

n bogenoemde hoofstuk, van verse drie tot sewe, word 10 uitstaande kenmerke van die LIEFDE beklemtoon: As dit ly is dit lankmoedig en vriendelik; as dit heers, het jaloesie en naywer geen plek nie; as dit buig, is dit nie grootpraterig nie; as dit optree, handel dit nie onwelvoeglik of selfsugtig nie; as dit seerkry, reageer dit nie met verbittering nie; as dit onreg verwerk, reken dit die kwaad nie toe nie; as dit beoordeel, gaan dit oor geregtigheid en waarheid; as dit moet vertrou, is geloof vir die liefde maklik, want hy ken die Een wat hy liefhet; as dit rondkyk, is dit vol hoop, want dit kyk altyd ook op, en as dit aan die skurwe kant blootgestel word, verdra dit. Liefde is deeglik beproef. - Ds. Johan Marais (Louis Trichardt Baptistekerk)

An interesting graph in the report shows that the excess deaths in Limpopo follow the trend of Covid-19 infections.

It’s quiet, but don’t let your masks down By Anton van Zyl Amidst speculation that a third wave of Covid-19 infections is about to hit the country, the Vhembe District has been very quiet. At the start of the week, the official figures indicated that 23 active coronavirus cases could be found in the region, with a total death toll of 462. The latest figures are very different from mid-January this year, when the second wave of infections peaked. On 13 January, the official figure for active infections in the Vhembe District stood at 2 147. Most of these were in the Thulamela District (842), with Makhado not far behind on 770. At that stage, the official Covid-19 death toll was 105. The second wave’s lethal remnants were seen in the following months, with the death toll rising rapidly. Most of the fatalities were in the Makhado municipal area (213), with Thulamela (163) not far behind. In the Collins Chabane Municipality, 67 Covid-19 deaths were recorded and in Musina 19 people died after being infected. The cumulative number of infections in Vhembe stood at 11 698 on 3 May.

a cumulative total of nearly 156 000 excess deaths from natural causes of persons 1+ years of age of which about 73 000 occurred in 2021 (since 3 Jan 2021),” says the SAMRC in a report published last week. The report was compiled in conjunction with the University of Cape Town’s Centre for Actuarial Research. Even if the official figure of just more than 54 000 Covid-19 deaths is taken into account, that means more than 100 000 more people died than what would be considered “normal”.

dicate that 63 680 people contracted the disease, with a death toll of 2 272. Which means that, in this province, 12 212 more people died than what could reasonably be anticipated. In real terms, this means the province has “lost” an average-sized town. If the excess deaths are calculated as a percentage of the population, Limpopo does not look particularly good. It amounts to 245 deaths per 100 000, which places us in the fifth spot. The worst performer is the Eastern Cape (511/100 000), with Kwazulu-Natal (330/100 The situation in Limpopo 000) second. Whether the excess deaths can Even though the Limpopo Province is not all be attributed to Covid-19 is debatable and among the top three as far as excess deaths are uncertain. What is worrying, however, is that the concerned, the number is alarmingly high. The trends and the graphs show clearly that excess past year, 14 484 more people died than what the deaths peak when Covid-19 infections peak. figures predicted. The latest available figures in-

But can the figures be trusted? Some conspiracy theorists still argue that Covid-19 is nothing more than a scare tactic employed by governments worldwide to ensure that citizens remain obedient. They reckon the coronavirus is nothing more than a severe flu. The problem that the conspiracy theorists battle to deal with is the steep rise in the death toll in the country the past year. If anything, the figures reported of people dying indicate that Covid-19 deaths are vastly underreported. Unlike most sicknesses, deaths must be reported, and concealing a death is a crime. These figures are recorded on the National Population Register and are used by government departments and other institutions to do predictions and planning. Institutions such as the SA Medical Research Council (SAMRC) use the figures collected over many years predict to fairly accurately how many people are expected to die every month and even in a specific week. The worrying part, however, is that many more people died the past year than was expected. “Since 3 May 2020, there has been

Dood laat gemeenskap totaal verslae (Vervolg van p.1) “Quintin was ‘n liefdevolle kind.

Haar inskrywing in Engels lees: “It’s hard to understand that such a strong, talented, brilliant individual passed away at the age of 27. Many knew him and celebrated him, and many of you do not know of him. I want to honour him by writing this tribute about a phenomenal young man, Quintin Moodie. Quintin became my friend when we were in Grade 5, and we would later serve as head leaders in matric at Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. He was a winner. He was an incredible rugby player, athlete, with the discipline and perseverance that few have ever seen. He was a huge part of my childhood, a wonderful part - and he has been taken too soon. Quintin was the reason I survived maths. He patiently allowed me to sit with him as he tried to explain what to do, knowing I would not be able to remember a thing, and so he would fill in most of the answers to save me from total failure. Quintin was a leader and was the most remarkable head

boy. So many looked up to him. And they still do. I certainly still do, and always will. Quintin was loved by everyone. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He was a top academic achiever, awarded the leadership trophy when we were in matric, a fantastic orator, and above all, a beautiful person with a heart of gold. Pure gold. I have no doubt his legacy will live on for a long time. Heaven gained another angel … How lucky the heavens are, now that you’re there...”

Police arrest three who abduct woman The Makhado police arrested three suspects at Makhado Crossing in Louis Trichardt on Monday on charges ranging from impersonating a police officer to robbery. According to a police report, a 62-year-old woman was abducted in Mokopane while on her way to collect her SASSA grant at around 08:00. On her way there, she was confronted by two African males who pretended to be police officers from the Mokopane SAPS. The two males forced the elderly woman back into her own vehicle and instructed her

to drive to her residential property to collect her bank cards. Back at her home, the woman got her handbag, and she was driven back to Mokopane. “But to her surprise, she saw the driver passing Polokwane, taking the N1 road to Louis Trichardt. The victim then asked the driver where they were going and she was told that they were going to the police headquarters,” states the police report. When the suspects arrived in Louis Trichardt with the woman, one of the men took her cellphone while the other

two men ordered the woman to go into a bank at Makhado Crossing and withdraw R60 000 from her account. “The victim went inside the bank and she explained everything to the person who was supposed to assist her. That person then informed the police, who immediately rushed to the bank and managed to arrest three suspects,” states the report. At the time of our going to press, the police were still busy with their investigation. Whether the suspects had appeared in court already was unclear.

gaan teregstaan.

Still no news about Shyam Premjee Missing person update No news about the fate of the 36-year-old Louis Trichardt businessman, Shyam Premjee, has been received yet. He was violently abducted on his way to work on Friday, 9 April. Since the incident, the Premjee family have closed ranks and a spokesperson requested that the family members be allowed space to deal with the traumatic event. The family did not want to comment on the case. The spokesperson for the police in Limpopo, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, confirmed on Monday that Mr Premjee was still missing, with no new information on the case. He previously stated that the police were treating it as a missing-person case, “We can only treat it as a kidnapping if these people [suspects] phone to demand a ransom,” he said. The suspects presumably transferred Mr Premjee to another vehicle and fled the scene, using two silver sedans. These vehicles were reportedly seen driving along the N1. An intensive manhunt for the suspects and the safe return of Mr Premjee was immediately launched and continues. Members of the public are once again asked

to come forward, should they have information about the incident or Mr Premjee’s whereabouts. The person tasked with dealing with information can be reached on 071 501 1695.

The new developments were welcomed by most sectors of the community, but some people had their doubts. “We really appreciate this development. The park has been in a poor state for a long time. We do not think anyone ever took care of it, as there are broken glass bottles, plastic bags, and papers all over. We need a place where we can relax and feel safe, but if this development involves fees, then it has to be reasonable,” said one of the people who visited the park the past weekend. “This is the place we as a family favour most to come to, to relax, so we need it to be up to standard with more facilities. The municipality must also cut the grass on a regular basis,” said

Duduzile Khumalo, another visitor who stays in Tshikota. The park, according to Khumalo, could be very safe if a fee is introduced, as this would reduce a number of the unruly elements. He does, however, feel that children should at least pay less. “As it is, I cannot let my children visit the park alone. There are a lot of suspicious movements and the park is too bushy,” he said. Marvil Phusawani from Nzhelele echoed Khumalo’s sentiments. “My sister and her boyfriend were robbed of their phones in broad daylight at this park last year. As it is the park, is not safe, except on the weekends when there are lots of other people in the park,” said Phusawani.

N1/Mampakuil weighbridge to be upgraded at a cost of R15 million By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed the allocation of R15 million for the upgrading of the Mampakuil weighbridge on the N1 between Botlokwa and Louis Trichardt. The Mampakuil weighbridge has been neglected for years and is not in a good condition, the party said. An old and dilapidated caravan is being used as a guardroom and temporary office buildings are being used. “There is no place to put the loads that are reduced from the vehicles that are overloaded,” said the DA in Limpopo’s spokesperson on Transport and Community Safety, Ms Katlego Phala. She said that the disorganised conditions at the weighbridge were unwelcome at this stage. “It is also the only weighbridge with a manual weighing system, as opposed to the more modern systems used at other weighbridges where trucks have dedicated lanes as they approach the weighbridge, and a robot directs them to the scale,” she said. According to Phala, the weighbridge has also been an occupational hazard for employees as it is not very visible from the N1, except for the green board with a small font. “The weighbridge’s effectiveness is dependent on traffic control officials on the main road to stop trucks. In 2020, a traffic official died at this very same weighbridge after he was hit by a vehicle while trying to stop another vehicle,” she said. Phala stressed that the R15 million allocated for the Mampakuil weighbridge upgrade should be used for a dedicated lane guiding trucks to the weighbridge, the installation of visible boards, as well as road signs and a new, properly built and installed modern infrastructure in order to improve the working conditions and performance.

awakes with the sound of a car. It looks like her mother’s car. Rosalyn’s necklace then starts to itch. She places it on the map, causing the markers to swirl around like magical fireflies. She realised that the markers formed a pattern, that of Orion’s belt. The book pieced together with the maps creates constellations. When she climbs out of the treehouse she gets confronted by a tall dark man. “You are the missing piece. I was sent by the chief to return you with the golden mortar to El Dorado,” he tells her. The man has a golden necklace, similar to that of Rosalyn. The necklace starts tugging the man towards the treehouse where Rosalyn had left the book and maps. To be continued

How does it work?

Is it difficult?

Some rules:

We wrote the first chapter of the story. Two stories are featured, an English one and an Afrikaans story. The stories alternate, meaning one week the English chapter appears and the next week the Afrikaans story’s chapter. The stories are completely different, and the young writers do not have to enter chapters for both stories. The first chapter had merely set the parameters of the story, such as some of the characters and a very basic plot. Where the story will eventually end up is totally up to our young readers. Writers may introduce new characters and (sadly) kill off some of the old characters. Every new chapter gets published on a Thursday in the newspaper. The writers then have up to the following Wednesday afternoon to send in their contributions. The entries will be judged by a panel of writers. Every week’s winning entry will receive a small prize. An overall prize for the best contributions (English and Afrikaans) will also be given at the end of the series.

We want to encourage all young writers to contribute. The writer’s imagination and the way the plot is structured are more important than the use of language. The winning contributions will be sub-edited and corrected before the next chapter is published. (If neces-

Although we want to keep rules to the minimum, some guidelines are necessary. Each chapter should be limited to 500 words or fewer. Entries must reach the newspaper before 23:00 on a Wednesday afternoon after publication. (If, for instance, the Afrikaans story’s chapter is published that specific week, the entries for the next chapter must reach us by the next Wednesday.) Entries must be e-mailed to leigh@ zoutnet.co.za. The story will be published on our website to make it easier for entrants to recap on what had happened in previous chapters. Each chapter must preferably end in a way that the suspense is maintained and that the other writers can add to the story. Both stories need to end in Chapter 10. Build the story in such a way that a conclusion can be reached in the final chapter.

sary information may be added to keep context and add to the continuity.) In every week’s edition, a judges’ discussion with some advice for the young writers will be provided. The competition is not about language excellence, but rather about the telling of an interesting story.

Who can enter? An age-limit of 19 has been set, but anything younger goes. Entrants are not limited to specific schools, but they must reside in the Vhembe District.

Entries for Chapter 8 of the English story must reach us before 23:00 on Wednesday, 12 May 2021.

This week’s winner is Nyandano Ramushweu. “I attend Ridgeway College, I am currently doing grade 12 and this is my literary piece. I Hope you will enjoy it,” he says. He wins this week’s R300 cash prize.

Chapter 7 By Nyandano Ramushweu

osalyn and the tall, dark stranger stared at each other for seconds that felt like hours. Nothing was heard but the wind blowing through the forest around them and the sound of the nearby rapids on the river. Tinashe, as the man introduced himself, was obviously waiting for Rosalyn to respond, but she froze up. Rosalyn couldn’t make up her mind. Yes, Tinashe was the missing link she needed, but her instincts were screaming at her to run. Something was incredibly off about his sudden appearance, and that didn’t sit well with her. “You’re not going to run off again like back at the house, are you?” “No, but I should be the one asking the questions,” said Rosalyn, displaying a bit of attitude. For a moment she asked herself whom she was fooling. Was the façade of bravery she was showing supposed to fool Tinashe, or herself? She knew the answer but brushed it off. Tinashe pushed her gently aside and she stumbled slight-

Comments from the judges Every week is an exciting journey – and now we’re only talking about the judges’ experiences. For Chapter 7 we received two outstanding entries. Anke Roos’ version had Rosalyn jumping from tree to tree in an effort to escape the mysterious man. It was a funfilled and very humorous epi-

ly. When she looked over at where he was, he had already climbed four steps up to the treehouse. “Hey!” she screamed. She followed him up the steps, only to find him on the platform, holding her grandfather’s book with his eyes wide open with excitement. Something told her it was all over - a feeling she could not explain. She felt like she had lost everything. Watching Tinashe stare at those pages, she felt her stomach churn. Tinashe removed his necklace, and it flew to the depression on the cover. In a quick act of desperation, she lunged, grabbing the book out of his hands while he was still seemingly basking in his “victory”. She held it close to her chest, close to her heart. This was not just a book anymore, it was the last remnant of her grandfather, but it was too late. Tinashe burst into demented laughter as the book began to glow brighter and brighter. Rosalyn was panicking. Her mind was racing. As the wind blew louder, the birds turned from singing to screaming, and the ground was quaking. Tinashe was loudly chanting words in an ancient dialect that sounded all too familsode, but unfortunately didn’t take the plot much further. Our previous winner, Nyandano Ramushweu, clearly has an imagination that knows very few boundaries. As one of the judges put it: “This is definitely the winner - fast-moving, changing the setting, and physically propelling us forward towards ... well, we’ll have to wait for the next chapter, I guess!” Nyandano receives this week’s R300 prize and he is

iar to Rosalyn - chaos. She knew something was going to happen, but she didn’t know what… “Where am I? ... Where am I?” In the blink of an eye, she had been transported, teleported, but where? She struggled to stand and staggered around for a while, until her eyesight and balance returned. All she could remember was holding the book, and then a big golden flash, and now she was standing in the middle of a grassland in the moonlight. “Definitely not in the treehouse anymore,” she whispered. Surprisingly, Rosalyn wasn’t in shock because she had magically vanished and reappeared in an unknown location in the dark. At this point she realised that she had to stop trying to understand. She looked around her, trying to peer into the distance. Large rectangular boulders appeared to surround here, each about four to five metres tall. She walked closer, and they only seemed to become bigger and bigger. The boulders were arranged in a circular pattern and resembled something she once saw in a National Geographic documentary. It reminded her of Stonehenge, the prehistoric monument on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. She walked around the gigantic stones, until she noticed that one of the boulders was placed horizontally on top of two vertical ones, creating a doorlike, rectangular space in the centre. She took a few steps forward into the space, and then she saw it - the rectangular space was exactly aligned with a familiar constellation. “Orion,” she whispered. To be continued. quietly managing to collect some useful pocket money with his writing skills. The competition, however, is now getting more difficult. With only three chapters to go Rosalyn needs to (hopefully) find her granddad and after Chapter 7’s “travelling”, they need to get back home. To all the other young writers out there: Start typing away and give Nyandano a proper run for the prize money!

Remember: Entries for Chapter 8 of the English story must reach us before 23:00 on Wednesday, 12 May 2021.

LET’S COOK... Moist Red Velvet Cake

By Denise van Bergen

Portia Mabirimisa runs her own bakery and of all the delicious things she concocts on a daily basis, this is her favourite. The recipe was handed down to her by a close friend she also considers a great baker, who shared some of her recipes as a gift when Portia first started her business. Although she was still rather inexperienced at the time, there was just something elegant about this particular recipe that had her baking it over and over again for her family and friends. Needless to say, she has mastered it to perfection by now. Ingredients: 2 cups cake wheat flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 1 cup white sugar 1 cup cooking oil (preferably Canola) 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk 2 tsp vanilla essence 2 tsp red food colouring (preferably the thicker one, if you choose the watery one, use 2 bottles) 1 tsp coffee powder mixed with ½ cup hot water 1 tsp white vinegar Cooking Instructions: Preheat oven to 200°C. Generously grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder and salt. Set aside. In a large bowl, mix the sugar and vegetable oil together. First add the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla and red food colouring, then add the coffee and white vinegar. Stir until everything is mixed well. Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients simultaneously. Not all at once, a little at a time, mixing after each addition, until just combined (the batter will be thin). Pour the batter evenly into each pan and place the pans on the middle oven rack. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of each cake comes out with moist crumbs clinging to it. Do not overbake, as the cake will continue to cook as it cools. When done, let the pans cool a little on a cooling rack, until they are only warm to the touch. Slide a knife or spatula around the inside of the pans to loosen the cake from the pans. Gently remove the cake by tipping the pans over, and let them finish cooling (the warm cake will be very delicate). When the cakes have cooled completely, cover them generously with cream cheese icing and stack. Notes: Be sure not to overbake! Check the cake at 30 minutes, as some ovens run really hot. The cake will be very moist and delicate, and you may need to refrigerate them first to firm them up before frosting and stacking. To bake cupcakes, bake for 18-20 minutes, checking at the 18-minute mark.

Cream Cheese Icing: 250 g (1 x tub) plain cream cheese 250 g unsalted butter or any baking margarine, at room temperature 2 tsp vanilla essence 4 cups icing sugar, sifted In a large bowl, cream the cream cheese and butter together with a hand mixer. Add the vanilla essence and gradually mix in the icing sugar. Let icing set in the fridge for a few hours to firm up, if needed. Portia was born and raised in Dzanani in Nzhelele. She is married with a 15-year-old daughter, Owami. After she resigned from the corporate world in 2013 she decided to start her own bakery called Posh Yummy Delights, which she runs from home. What she loves about baking is the attention to detail it requires. She considers it a “sophisticated sport” and great stress reliever. She has a sweet tooth herself and says that this definitely cures her cravings. Portia is also a lover of the outdoors. She and her hubbie, Divhambele, like to take road trips and enjoy watching the beautiful scenery from these parts of our country. For relaxation she treats herself now and then to a visit at a Spa and makes time for swimming, dancing or watching a good romance or comedy on the telly. Learning something new and having an adventure; love and family; being a homemaker, wife and mother – these are the things that make her the happiest in life.

Louis Trichardt se kolwers was in verwoestende vorm gewees.
