“When the late Dimbanyika Mphephu was put onto the throne in the 90s, my client was expecting that he would be the one to be sworn in. He was surprised when Toni Mphephu Ramabulana was sworn in while he was still waiting,” said Sikhala.

Ndanduleni and Masindi are not the first people to challenge for the position occupied by King Toni. The royal families of Tshidziwelele, Mphaphuli and Tshivhase failed in their challenge at the same court late last year.

In his response, Jackson Mafunzwaini, who is the spokesperson for the Mphephu Royal family, laughed off the matter and said: “Ndanduleni is wasting his time and money by going to court.”

“Ndanduleni should go to the commission and submit his story, so that the commission can take a decision based on the facts. The issue of traditional leadership cannot be resolved by the court. The commission is the only institution that can make a decision,” said Mafunzwaini.

Mr Johann Hammann Sr of Hammann Moosa Attorneys reacted om behalf of Masindi Mphephu and said they have received no documents yet.

He said even if Ndanduleni was the eldest son of the late Patrick Mphephu, it does not necessarily mean he has any claim to the title. The late Dimbanyika Mphephu was the heir because of him being born from the house chosen to produce a heir by the royal family structures.

Two friends robbed at gunpoint The SAPS at Musina have opened a case of armed robbery, which allegedly took place on the morning of 28 January.

According to the police, it is alleged that Munyaradzi Kabasa (39) and Denias Matau (29) were walking along the street when three males and a female approached them. Before they could say anything, a Toyota Quantum minibus came to a stop next to them.

The police added that one of the four suspects pointed a firearm at them, while the oth-

ers forcefully dragged the two victims into the vehicle.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, the four suspects then drove off to a small stream where they searched the victims. They took at least R5 000 and US$15 from Kabasa. They also left with R6 000 and US$40 000, which belonged to Matau.

“We need the community to assist us with information which may lead to the arrest of the suspects in this case,” said Lt Mudau.

Mudau announced on Tuesday

that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the case.

He said the police were also investigating an incident on 1 February, when a 42-year-old woman was allegedly raped while on her way from church at around 02:00.

The victim apparently saw two men walking along the street close to her. One of the two men came and forcefully pulled her into the nearby bushes at knife point. The suspect then raped her. “The suspect has not yet been arrested, but we hope to make a breakthrough soon,” said Mudau.

Mutale officials call off their strike The strike of nearly 150 municipal workers at Mutale, which lasted for almost two weeks, ended peacefully last Monday when members of the union and the municipality signed an agreement to pay cash bonuses for workers.

Services such as waste removal, cleaning, paying for

municipal services and testing for drivers’ licenses were temporarily stopped during the strike. “We are happy that we will receive what we were fighting for. We are ready to go back to work and deliver better services to our communities, because the management has understood our demands,” said the secretary of

the South African Municipal Workers Union in Mutale, Mr Tsumbedzo Sumbana.

The mayor of the Mutale local municipality, Cllr Josephine Mukwevho, confirmed that the strike had ended. She urged communities in Mutale to come to the municipality and pay for services.

This group of gogos from different denominations in the Matangari/Matombotswuka area outside Thohoyandou reckon prayer is the best way to motivate each other. The group of seven meets every morning and prays for 30 minutes. They started meeting in 1985 and they pray for different things on different days of the week. Last month, the gogos held a suprise party for one of their members, Martha Nemakonde (57). The party was held at the house of gogo Elisa Tshisevhe.

During the occassion, Nemakonde was showered with presents and a cake was shared among members in recognition of the good work she is doing for the group.

Crocodile scare at Siloam village A crocodile that had brought terror to the community of Siloam in the Nzhelele was hunted down and put down after many hours of searching.

The crocodile, measuring nearly two metres, caused a scare in the community after being spotted by passersby in a small pond not far from the Siloam Hospital. The incident happened on Friday morning.

News of a crocodile in the middle of a village spread like wildfire and local villagers and others from the surrounding villages swarmed to the area in no time.

Many in the community believe that the presence of the crocodile was as a result of the recent floods in Vhembe, forcing wild animals to relocate inland where the water levels were lower. When the waters subsided, some of those animals could not make it back to their own locality .

Only last week, a lion was spotted close to villages in the Nzhelele area. Two weeks ago, more than 15000 crocodiles were washed away from their enclosure at Rakwena Crocodile farm on the South AfricaBotswana border in Limpopo.

Some of those have not been accounted for so far although

many have been recaptured.

The Siloam crocodile was spotted by a woman with three of her friends who had come from withdrawing money from an ATM at the gate of the hospital. They came face to face with the crocodile, which was basking in the sun.

Word of the crocodile spread like wildfire. Within a short space of time, the area was swarming with curious onlookers who wanted to have a glimpse of the dreaded creature.

Some vowed that they would not go home until it was found and killed.

“At first we thought it was a car bumper, but we were shocked when the bumper started moving away into the water, and that was when we realized it was a crocodile. I have never been so scared. We rushed to a car wash that is not far from the pond, shouting that there was a crocodile.”

People from the car wash came in their numbers but the crocodile had disappeared into the water.

“We summoned the police who, together with conservationists, organized that the water be pumped out of the pond,” said Violet Tharini of Dopeni-Tshipise Ha Matsharini. Nature conservation of-

ficials and the police struggled the whole day to drain the water from the pond.

The crocodile was only found late in the evening and it put up a fight, which forced officials to put it down.

“We are relieved that the evil creature has been killed and taken away by the police.

Evil people could take its brain, which is regarded as very poisonous, and kill or harm people in the village. Now that it is gone, our children will be safe, but we are concerned that it might have not been alone and there might be others in the vicinity,” said Mashudu Mudau, a local resident. Meanwhile, the police at Siloam have sent a warning to communities in the Nzhelele area not to venture into pools of water, even if it is just rain water.

“Many crocodiles have washed away from rivers, and from information we are gathering, there are many crocodiles out there which might be a danger to the community. Wwe spent the whole day looking for the crocodile, and when we found it, it put up a fierce struggle, so that we were forced to put it down as it had become a danger to the community,” said W/O Edzisani Tharaga of the Siloam police.

Family want answers after woman’s death

Three flood victims buried at Musina While some of the mourners fainted, some wailed uncontrollably as the coffins containing the bodies of a father and his two children were simultaneously lowered into the earth at Musina graveyard on Saturday.

This was during the emotional funeral service of Hendrick (31), Thapelo (2) and Thabo (1) Malithuba, who were swept away by the recent floods, when the car in which they were travelling plunged off a destroyed bridge on the Pontdrift road outside Musina. Hundreds of mourners from all corners of Limpopo, mainly members of the St Engenas ZCC, had to put everything aside to join family members in order to bid their final goodbye to the three deceased.

Family representative Mbud­ zeni Mabasa said: “Death has robbed us of a father, a brother,

a pathfinder and a strong man who always worked hard to feed his family. Our hearts bleed for the innocent little kids, but there is nothing we can do except to accept it as it is. We would like to thank Musina Municipality, businesspeople and all the community members who have been on our side since this tragedy struck. We wouldn’t have achieved all this if it was not for their support. We also know that there are those who have been encouraging us with prayers for the past two weeks.”

Mayor Carol Phiri said it was unfortunate that the three Malithuba family members had to die such a cruel death. “As a caring municipality, we have done our best to make sure that the deceased are buried in a dignified way. We would also like to thank everyone involved in assisting the family at this time

of need. We only have to put our trust in God because He is the only one who knows why it happened like this. As a municipality, our wealth is the people, but we feel somehow uncomfortable when we lose our community members in disastrous situations like this one. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.”

While the undertakers were lowering the coffins to the ground, Pastor Philemon Marera of the St Engenas ZCC said that they had come to share the great loss with the family. “We don’t come today with any answers why it happened like this. It might be difficult to believe, but the Bible says that it’s actually good for us to be here today.

It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of every person; the living should take this to heart.”

Water situation improves at Beit Bridge The water supply situation in Beit Bridge town has now greatly improved, after engineers from the local water utility, Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), had repaired the water treatment pump which had been submerged in water after the recent floods.

The town was without water for five days last week until normal service was restored on Friday.

The water treatment plant, which is located near the Limpopo River, was submerged last Monday, resulting in back-up generators’ also being submerged and, in the process, affecting the electrical systems. Local residents had to resort to using water from 33 boreholes, which were drilled at various strategic points in the border town at the height

of the cholera outbreak in 2008.

An official from ZINWA, Mr Tommy Rosen, said it had taken them four days to address the situation at the treatment plant.

“We had to drain the water from the treatment pump and re-assemble the machines before restoring services,” he said.

Beit Bridge Town Secretary Dr Sipho Singo had earlier on in the week indicated that the town would go for some time without water. The town needs at least 15 000 m3 of water per day, although the local authority is able to supply only a third of the daily requirement. The border town has 4 000 houses and is home to more than 40 000 people, and thousands of travellers pass through every day. The floods have also affected construction work on the new treatment pump.

Singo said the floods had also

left a trail of destruction on the water and sewer reticulation systems. He said four points had been damaged on the main sewer line, adding that they had since repaired three points. He said the bus terminus and several link roads had also been damaged extensively, though the engineering department had started working on them.

“As council, we are doing everything necessary to avoid the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera,” said Singo.He said the ongoing World Bank-funded US$2.65 million emergency water supply and sanitation programme was near completion. “The massive project, which was launched in March 2011, is mainly aimed at rehabilitating the existing water and sewerage infrastructure in the border town.”

A 34-year-old resident of Ramantsha, Ms Mainganya Ratshibaya, passed away last Tuesday, allegedly of food poisoning.

According to her mother, Ms Elisa Ratshibaya, she received a call from her daughter’s neighbours late on Monday night, informing her that her daughter was ill.

“When I arrived there, I found my daughter in bed. She was very weak and sick.” She said that her daughter’s tongue had turned blue when she arrived at the house.

She said that the way her daughter had died affected the whole family. “What puzzles us is that her tongue had turned blue. We need answers. I am saddened and in a state of shock.

I do not have any idea as to what could have happened,” she said.

Mr Peter Mulaudzi, husband of the deceased, said that he was still extremely shocked. “We are not pointing fingers at anybody now but hope that a post mortem will shed light on the reason of her death.”

Mainganya will be buried on Saturday at the Madombidzha cemetery. The service will start at 06:00 at Ramantsha.

Police investigate shooting at Matswale The Musina police are investigating a case of murder, after a man was found shot at his spouse’s home at Matswale on Monday.

Members of the police were alerted when a man was found lying lifeless on the ground at

around 02:35. The spokesperson for Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, said that the police had opened a case of murder, following the incident. “We found a man lying a pool of blood with two bullet wounds in his back,” Lt Mudau said. “The victim was

rushed to Musina Hospital, where he later died. “ Mudau said that the police also found a bolt cutter and slasher near him. The window of the house was open and burglar bars had been cut. Lt Mudau indicated that the victim is still unknown.

The tractors were shown to the community during a ceremony held at the trust's offices in Levubu. The project manager, Mr Henly Wolff, said the tractors would go a long way

The trust's chairperson, Chief Tshifo­ vhedze Madzivhandila, was over the moon. “We are elated that this day has finally arrived. We have been trying our luck for a long time, but we finally succeeded.

We are going to create more jobs for our people and this will be a plough-back to the community. The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Makhado has urged the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to investigate the continuing water crisis in the Makhado Municipality.

This follows after residents of Makhado have been without a stable supply of water for nearly seven years, says the DA's caucus leader, Cllr Abraham du Plooy. “The DA also submitted a memorandum of demands to the municipality in October last year, but nothing has happened,” Cllr

Du Plooy states.

He explains that the demands were based on the principle that the municipality must deliver basic services, such as water, proper sewerage infrastructure and roads, to the communities.

“We have approached the Human Rights Commission to officially lay a charge in accordance with the Bill of Rights,” Du Plooy says. The SAHRC's spokesperson, Mr Isaac Mangena, confirmed that the commission had received the complaint from the Democratic Alliance. “The mat-

ter has now been registered with us and is undergoing our internal screening process,” Mangena said. “We should be allocating an investigator as soon as we satisfy ourselves that it falls within the mandate of the SAHRC.” However, the scarcity of tap water in Makhado continues to be a thorn in the flesh of the affected residents. “It's been two weeks now that we haven't had even a drop of water,” says an elderly resident, Ms Hannetjie Joubert of Erasmus Street. “Even the municipal water trucks are not bringing us any water. I feel frustrated with the whole thing.”

The Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce argues that the lack of water is causing serious damage to the business sector. “Over the past few weeks, business was affected in more than one way by the lack of water supply,” says the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce's president, Lize Strauss. Top honours for Mopane during awards ceremony “I miraculously survived” Mopane Intermediate School, a school situated about 40 km from Musina, has proved that good things are not only found in towns and cities, but even remote communities can achieve a lot.

The school achieved a 100% pass rate in the 2011 Grade 12 examinations and continues to do well and outshine others in the Soutpansberg North Circuit. The school was once again voted the best school in the 2012 Grade 12 examina-

tions.

They were the toast of the community when the circuit celebrated its achievements during a function held at Eric Louw High School. The annual function, which saw educators, academics, businesspeople and Grade 12 pupils from all schools in the circuit and other invited guests gather to celebrate excellence, was held on Friday. All the recipients of the awards were not present as they are attending tertiary institutions.

Well-known businessman and academic Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana of Kalahari Publishers donated R5 000 to the circuit and another R5 000 to the best school in the circuit. The circuit manager, Dr Nelson Phaswana, said it had become a tradition in the circuit to celebrate excellence. "This initiative has had positive spinoffs since we started; we have seen a tremendous improvement in terms of quality results in the circuit. Last year, we attained 83,1% and we are now in position 3 out of 27 circuits; we are moving up the ladder. At the speed we are now travelling, it would not be surprising if we were at the top spot this year,” said Phaswana.

He said the awards motivated educators, pupils and SGBs and also encouraged parental involvement in the education of the children. Locals to honour the marula The Vhavenda King, Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, will officially launch the Vhembe District Marula Festival next Saturday (16/2) as part of celebrating the fruit, which is described as part of the local culture and heritage.

The occasion is termed U luma Mukumbi/Ku luma Nguva and the ceremony is the build-up towards the Limpopo Provincial Marula Festival at Phalaborwa at the beginning of next month.

According to the spokesperson of

the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Moss Shibambu, the marula fruit is rich in nutrients and also serves as an excellent base for fruit products such as soft drinks, nectars, teas, brandies, wines, and punches; it is also used in beauty products. Local communities have used the fruit for generations to cure and prevent illnesses such as scurvy and also to perform various traditional rituals.

Shibambu added that various cultural dance groups would entertain guests during the festival.

Jail time for robbers Government asked to intervene in “spread of foreign inyangas” The Hlanganani Regional Court sentenced three men to jail on charges of robbery last Wednesday (30 January). The case relates to an incident at Nthabalala Primary School on the night of 9 April 2011.

The court imposed a jail term of effectively ten years each on Mupo Mashaba (29) and Liberty Sithole (35). The court was merciful towards Cyril Fumani Sithole (21), who told the court that he was still a pupil and he was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. Adv Mokete Rakgokgo, for the State, said Cyril Sithole was a greedy pupil who showed no respect for school property which was meant to better other pupils’ lives. “You stole from the school which ought to provide you with an education,” Adv Rakgokgo said.

It was heard in court that the accused had entered the school yard through the hole which they had cut in the fence. They then went straight to the guardroom and stabbed the elderly security guard three times with a knife in the back, ribs and buttock. He bled profusely and lost consciousness. Then they covered him with a blanket before proceeding to the classrooms, where they stole school property.

The Makhado Municipality interacted with communities of Ward16 during a publicparticipation imbizo at the Shalom Christian Church in Waterval last Friday.

The purpose of the imbizo was to listen to people’s concerns about issues of service delivery in order to find a way of addressing them adequately, said municipal mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi.

During the event, different stakeholders from the community, including representatives of the youth, home-based care groups, the elderly, community policing forum, Sanco, traditional healers and business forums, voiced their concerns and addressed their needs.

The chairperson of the Waterval branch of the Traditional Healers Association, Ms Linah Rambau, requested the “government” to intervene in the spread of foreign, illegal inyangas or sangomas who distribute “dangerous” advertorial pamphlets. “These people claim to terminate pregnancies at affordable prices and people easily fall prey to these false healers,” Rambau said.

“Women continue to die in the hands of these false healers, as a result of botched abortions. A real healer will never kill anybody. The problem is these false healers mar our good names as traditional healers.”

Rambau further called upon the municipal to start treating traditional healers with the same respect and eagerness which they give medical doctors and teachers.

Sanco pleaded with the municipality to consider naming the streets in Waterval township. On this aspect, the mayor advised Sanco to consult with all relevant stakeholders in the community and then the process might be finalised with the municipality’s assistance.

Youth representative Madume Munyai requested the municipality to at least assist in completing the local stadium, which had previously been vandalised twice each time it was

completed. “The stadium walls were made of zinc sheets and thieves took advantage of the situation and stole the zinc sheets,” Munyai said. He further pointed out the need of municipality-supported job creation projects within the location.

Mutavhatsindi promised to address the issue of the sports ground with immediate effect, and further advised the youth to form co-operatives and other youth development projects. “If you can visit a LIBSA office (Limpopo Business Support Agency) at our offices, you might definitely get all the relevant information on how to launch yourselves as the youth,” he said. “As the municipality, we are trying to fix a number of roads after the recent rains,” Cllr Mutavhatsindi said.

Residents also complained about councillors who do not give feedback each time they have attended an integrated development plan (IDP) meeting. “Any interested community member should feel free to attend IDP meeting to see how the budget has been split for different projects within our municipality,” he said. “However, this does not preclude councillors from giving the community feedback about a meeting.”

This was during the official opening of the 2013 academic year on Thursday. The opening also coincided with the firstever Vice-Chancellor’s Student Academic Excellence Awards.

The function was held at the university’s auditorium.

The awards are an initiative of the 2011 Univen Student Senate and Senate Teaching and Learning Committee, which proposed to Senate that annual

academic excellence awards should be instituted for undergraduate students at all levels.

It is intended to promote a culture of teaching and learning in the schools through competition for the awards. Twenty percent of the award is in cash, with the remainder in tuition fees, book vouchers and accommodation, depending on the student’s choice. During the event, Mbati outlined the programme of action for 2013, particularly highlighting the infrastructure upgrading programme. He also highlighted some developments and improvements with regard to academic projects.

Mbati said the awards would instil a sense of competitive-

ness amongst students from all levels. “We have awards during graduation ceremonies, but not all have the opportunity to attend them. We would like to see junior students attend similar ceremonies. This will also go a long way in improving the quality of graduandi we produce and will also promote excellence amongst students and members of staff,” added Mbati.

One of the recipients, 21-year-old Jubilant Sibanda, a second-year BCom Business Economics student, who was the overall best student in the second level, hailed the award as a boost. “We are highly motivated to perform well in the future,” she said.

All businesspeople have been urged to register their businesses with the municipality, in line with the regulations.

A report on the desktop investigation and assessment of all houses owned by the Department of Public Works in the Musina municipal area was also tabled before the council. The next step will be for the council to conduct an inspection of each of the 147 identified properties to establish if they are occupied legally.

Still behind bars The 31-year-old Brighton Chauke, who was one of the Soutpansberg’s most wanted criminals for almost a year, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court again on Monday.

He has been charged with several violent crimes in the area after his daring escape from police custody in Musina in October 2010. At the time of his escape, Chauke was awaiting trial in a murder case in Musina, together with his brother, Shorty Chauke. Shorty (42) has since been sentenced to 45 years’ imprisonment.

After almost a year on the run, Chauke was rearrested on 7 August 2011 by members of the Waterval SAPS. Since his re-arrest, he has been positively connected to a spate of violent armed robberies, housebreakings and attempted murders.

During Monday’s appearance, Chauke appeared on the three charges that his brother had been convicted of. These charges relate to three robberies in April 2009 at three different businesses in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Of these, one was caught on security camera.

In the meantime, an additional nine charges have been brought against Chauke. They include seven counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, one count of murder and one count of housebreaking with the intent to steal. He will stand trial on these charges in the Thohoyandou High Court, together with his co-accused, Victor Ndlovu (40) and Douglas Ndou (28).

On Monday, Chauke’s case was postponed until 22 April. He will remain in custody until then.

Mayor Carol Phiri says although the council is the highest decision-making body in the municipality, it is always important to engage stakeholders and individual community members in the running of the municipality. “We strive for a democracy in which all citizens have the right to express their views and are able toparticipate directly in the decisions that affect their lives.”

Phiri says it is important to empower the local communities through access to all the relevant information required for any decision, to enable all to participate in the smooth running of the municipality. “We are moving towards building grassroots institutions that enable decisions to be made directly at the appropriate level by those affected, based on systems which encourage civic vitality, voluntary action and community responsibility. It is also our obligation that all elected representatives be committed to the principles of transparency, truthfulness, and accountability in governance.”

The draft annual report of the 2011/12 was presented during the meeting. The draft report gives a sense of how the municipality performed its functions during the financial year. The mid-year report, which measures progress during the current 2012/2013 financial year, was also presented.

A report about the recent flood disaster in the Musina municipal area was tabled before the council. It was also noted that, despite the lack of resources, the municipality is doing its best to make sure that the aftermath of the situation is addressed.

Council also passed condolences to the family of three victims who had passed away as a result of the floods. A report about the mayoral back-to-school campaign was also tabled and acknowledged by the council.

Municipality launches re-surfacing project The Makhado Municipality launched two street-surfacing projects worth millions of rands a fortnight ago.

The first project was launched in Eltivillas Extension 1 and the estimated cost of completion is R11 million. A project consultant has been appointed to oversee the whole project. According to the consultant, Mr Ramsy Nekhalale of African Blue Eagle, a 1,6km stretch of road needs to be tarred.

The project is expected to be finished in 10 months. He explained that storm water drainage is at the core of the project as it will then make the road durable even in times of heavy rains.

Two local businessmen and residents of Eltivilas, Mr Devendra Patel and Mr Viju Premjee, questioned the duration of the

project. “Why should it take 10 months (to complete) only 1, 6km?” asked Mr Patel. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, especially in a machinery world of today. Ten months means more or extra money into the project, and who is going to pay that money? Of course, the local ratepayers.”

Municipal Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi defended the decision to award the contract to the specific consultants and contractors. “We need to look at the history of our place and people,” he said. “Not all companies can afford the bigger machines, so we need to give them sufficient time to render quality service.”

by Mr Martin Mposi. He promised to deliver quality work and slaughter two cows at the handing over of the completed project somewhere towards the end of the year.

The second street-surfacing project is in Tshikota and the cost is R8 million. Mont Consulting Engineers has been appointed as the consultant, while the contractor is Immorial Building Construction. The consultant, Mr Edward Muvhango, explained that the scope of the work included the upgrading of the gravel roads to the tarred main road, which will stretch for 1,6km and the work will include storm water drainage pipes. “The duration of the project is six months,” he said.

The Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court was filled to capacity a fortnight ago, when Lutendo “Lufuno” Madome (25) appeared in connection with a charge of murder which took place at Tshikwarani village in the Kutama area.

Madome stands accused of allegedly murdering a 20-year-old female pupil, Tuwani Fhetani, on 9 January. He allegedly stabbed her to death at his home, while police officers hesitated to act outside the room. According to police’s preliminary investigations, Madome had abducted Fhetani when she was on her way from Tshiungulela Secondary School, where she was doing Grade10. The deceased’s family attended the court as well as the traditional leaders from Tshikwarani. “When cases of this nature happen among us, our duty is to show moral support to the affected household and relatives,” said Mr Ludwik Mahuwa, a community leader attached to the Kutama Traditional Authority.

“We will be coming to court until the final day of this case.”

The case against Madome was postponed to 27 February for further investigation. He remains in custody. Meanwhile, the office of the provin­cial commissioner Lt Gen Simon Mpembe had since lashed out at the members of the SAPS who attended to the complaint.

“As such, we have re­sorted to take serious departmental steps against them and the process is underway,” said the police’s provincial Lutendo Madume ap­ spokesperson Brig pear­e d in court for H a n g w a n i M u murder. laudzi.

One of Limpopo‘s senior traditional leaders, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, who has 75 chiefs serving under him, has urged the boiling community of Tswinga outside Thohoyandou to be united and to provide whatever information they might have in connection with the recent and mysterious death of a local man.

Mphaphuli addressed residents during a visit to the area on Sunday. The visit took place at the local traditional leader’s royal palace and came against the backdrop of turmoil in the village that has left many people affected. The turmoil has emanated from the death of a local school boy, who was found hanging in some nearby bushes.

When Avhashoni Mbedzi (18), a Grade 11 pupil at Muvhavha Secondary School, was found, rumours started doing the rounds that he had been ritually murdered. Many who have allegedly been linked to the mysterious death of the local man have had their properties torched and cut off from services in the village.

The aftermath of the upheaval also left many in the community arrested.

Mphaphuli was well received by the community members, who expressed the hope that all their challenges would be ironed out, so that they continue with their lives in a peaceful way. Addressing the residents, Mphaphuli said he had noted their concerns but had found two issues central to

the unhappiness in the area: that of the local traditional leader who is alleged to be selling sites in a corrupt manner and inefficient governance.

He said he summoned the chief and confronted him about the allegations, which he denied. “I have rebuked and cautioned him that if what I am hearing is true, he should stop it right away.”

He also touched on the burning issue of the killed boy which he said was troubling him as well. “I visited the police with a view to finding out what exactly was happening with the case, and I was shown post-mortem results and

made to understand that nothing was missing when the boy was found. I now urge and challenge anyone of you who might have information about this death to come forward and assist the police, so that the perpetrators can be brought to book,” he added.

After the address, many showed discontent and said there were many things which they had complained about which had not been addressed.

Amie Chhaya spreads his wings Much to the delight of the Musina community, well-known Limpopo community builder Mr Amie Chhaya has spread his wings to Musina.

Commonly known as the Minister of Blankets, Chhaya was in Musina earlier this week to arrange with the municipality on how best he can assist in helping the poor with much-needed food parcels and blankets. Chhaya was also there to get firsthand information about the recent floods that left three people dead in Musina.

Chhaya was received by Mayor Carol Phiri and Municipal Manager Johnson Matshivha in a round-table discussion to map

a way forward. A truck was immediately dispatched to pick up maize meal, cooking oil, margarine and bath soap, which will then be distributed to the poor during the course of next week.

Chhaya has committed to assisting the people of Musina until his last day on earth.

“Helping people is a way of life to me. I will continue to do that as long as I live. I know I have to help people as the nation’s economic crisis has deeply affected the lives of millions of our people. Poverty and job layoffs have pulled the rug out from under many families, particularly those living in lowincome communities. There is a

rising level of homelessness and food insecurity for many community members, and children are particularly affected by these conditions,” says the 88-year-old community builder, who has received countless awards during his lifetime.

Mayor Carol Phiri said she was very thankful to have Chhaya coming in to help the people of Musina. “We know the poverty levels of our people. We also know their hardships and some of them even have to sleep on empty stomachs. We feel greatly humbled to be associated with people of his calibre and this will help to fulfil our dream of bringing a better life to our people.”

Mine extends helping hand to victims The recent floods in the Limpopo valley caused a few anxious moments for the employees and residents of Tshikondeni Mine.

The mine confirmed last week that they had received a record-breaking 416mm of rainfall between 12 and 19 January.

“For the evening of 19 January alone, 185mm was measured,” said the spokesperson of the mine, Mrs Deadré Bekker.

No damage was reported in

the Tshikondeni mine village, but employees staying near the Mutale River experienced severe damage to their homes and belongings.

“In one case, a contractor’s house with all its contents was completely washed away,” said Bekker.

One farmer from the area reported that the water rose 15m above its normal level.

Prompted by the surrounding villages that were cut off from

the outside world, the mine’s manager, heads of departments and employees voluntarily assisted to distribute food parcels to the stranded residents. Villages that were left without road access were Mutale, Mkomawabani, Nkotswi and Bende Mutale.

The mine provided them with 500 food parcels. A special effort was also made to help the family who lost their 13-yearold child during the floods.

More people drown in Mopani area A flood victim was found in the Middle Letaba River outside Giyani a fortnight ago, after a three-day search by members of the community and the police.

ayeni village was swept away by water when he and a friend were fishing in the river.

The incident took place after warnings by the provincial government and the police that people should refrain from going

to the rivers after heavy floods.

Police spokesperson WO Thomas Makhubele said the police had worked hard to find the body. “What made things worse was that the river was still flowing heavily underneath and we managed to get him a kilometer away from where he drowned,” said Makhubele.

He also pleaded with the communities near big rivers to look after their children and not to play close to the water.

On Thursday, it was also announced that the bodies of two teenagers were found in the MeloPolice divers search for the body of Mr Brain Ntuli in the Middle Letaba totsi River at Ndzumeri Dam. near Giyani.

According to a statement by DAFF, the meat inspection service by suitably qualified and

skilled staff in the red meat and poultry abattoirs “is considered to be one of the essential elements of ensuring that the meat sold to the public is safe and wholesome.”

Meetings have already been held at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute near Pretoria, in the

Woman sentenced for attempted murder

Principals of the Soutpansberg East Circuit of education bade farewell to their circuit manager, Mr Peter Netshia, during an event held at the Emmanuel Christian School last Friday. Netshia recently retired after working 42 years in the Department of Education. The Vhembe District senior manager, Dr Gerson Rambiyana, praised Netshia for being a hard worker and a committed circuit manager. He indicated that Netshia’s contribution in the struggle for quality public education will always be remembered. He also mentioned that Netshia will be missed in the education family.

Netshia said that he was leaving the department with a warm heart because he had played his part wholeheartedly. “I now hand over the spear to the young to take over.” He said he was humbled by the love shown by his colleagues. The Tshilwavhusiku Regional Court sentenced a 26-year-old woman to five years' imprisonment for attempted murder.

The court heard that on 25 August last year a resident of Maebane village in the Kutama area, Nkateko Beauty Rihlampfu, was sitting outdoors with her sister and mother, when she told them that she felt tired and needed to rest in her room.

When her sister followed her into the house a few moments later, she found a stark naked Beauty wriggling on the floor.

She then rushed out to call her mother. On their return, they found that Beauty had given

birth to a baby boy and was sitting hard on top of the new-born baby, shouting that she did not want him.

The mother and daughter tried to pull her off the child, but she violently kicked the baby against the wall. The baby, who was apparently still attached to the mother through the umbilical cord, lost consciousness. Police and emergency personnel were called and Beauty was arrested, charged and placed in police custody.

The accused was later released from custody but tried to make a run for it shortly afterwards and went to Gauteng. The Director

of Public Prosecution recommended that a warrant of arrest be issued against her. She was rearrested and the case was put on the court roll again.

The case against the accused was postponed many times for further investigations before the trial could resume. When she appeared in court on 24 January, she was sentenced to a direct jail term of five years.

“Focus on your education” - Archbishop Musina residents repair town’s streets The leader of the United African Apostolic Church, Archbishop Elias Miriri, has urged the youth of his church to take their education seriously.

Miriri addressed hundreds of youths from the different branches of his church during the Vuwani 2 District’s first ever conference. The conference took place at Itsani outside Thohoyandou on Sunday.

The leader of the youth in the district, Johannes Madzhie, said as the youth of the church

they could not just sit and look on when pupils achieved good results as if nothing was happening. “This is a way of motivating them. We believe this will bring better results in the long run and our youth will be counted among the best in the country,” he said.

Miriri handed over certificates, medals and trophies to pupils who performed well in the 2012 Grade 12 examinations and said the church took the issue of education very

seriously. “I always feel envious when I am invited by the government in Polokwane to hand over awards to top achievers and I do not see youths from our church,” he said.

He warned the youth against rushing into sexual relationships, saying it would destroy their future. “Education is your husband and your wife who will never divorce you. Do not rush into things that are meant for adults. Study harder in order to get good passes,” he said.

Hundreds of residents of Musina spent last Monday repairing roads that were recently da­maged by the floods. The initiative is part of Mayor Carol Phiri’s strategy of enga­ging community members in the running of the municipality.

Municipal workers, led by the municipal manager, Mr Johnson Mathivha, did not want to be left behind in this communitybuilding initiative.

All managers got down in the scorching sun with courage and enthusiasm.

Phiri says it was very important to do something with the community in the spirit of

Vuk’uzenzele (do it yourself).

“It will take some time before we mobilize resources and money to replace the roads and, as responsible citizens, we couldn’t just sit and relax while our communities needed improved lives out there.”

Phiri thanked everyone who took part during the initiative.

“We are happy with the response we got from our community members who volunteered their time to come and assist here today. It is very important for us to sustain our noble spirit of joining hands, and to remind all of us of the need to entrench the spirit of Vuk’uzenzele. A lot

of hard work lies ahead, and this requires each of us to lend a hand, in the true spirit of volunteerism and nation building.”

One of the community members who volunteered his time to fix the roads, Mr Abel Mbevhana, said “this is what we really call cooperative governance. I did not think twice when I heard that the mayor wants us to come and assist the municipality here today.

I decided to put aside everything because I know that the community also benefit from our efforts.

I encourage other community members to work hand in hand with our municipality to create a better life for all.”

The league is being organised by the Eltivillas Cricket Club. Matches will also take place in the evenings at the field of Eltivillas School.

According to the president of the club, Yahya Jiwa, the league is being sponsored by Hyundai Louis Trichardt and Easy Build. Teams comprise the standard 11 players, but a soft ball will be used.

Better working relationship between municipality and Chamber of Commerce?

For the first time in three years, the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) had an official meeting with the Makhado Municipality.

This meeting took place on Friday, 25 January. Attending the meeting were the mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, and the municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, as well as two members from the chamber.

President of the chamber Ms Lize Strauss said the meeting was requested to address town problems such as sewerage,

maintenance of streets and the general appearance of the town.

All these things, she indicated, have a radical impact on the economical growth of the town.

During the meeting, Mutshinyali acknowledged that the lack of service not only burdened residents of the town, but also the entrepreneurs. He emphasized the fact that the Makhado Municipality can no longer be held responsible for the water supply.

This area is now the responsibility of the Vhembe District Municipality. At the meeting it was resolved that businesspeople

and members of the chamber can report service delivery problems directly to the municipal manager. This can only be done if a problem has not been resolved by reporting it to the relevant municipal departments.

“We as the Soutpansberg Chamber of Commerce are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship between the Makhado Municipality and ourselves,” said Strauss.

Easter Challenge a roaring success Mamu Community Sports Development recently received a sponsorship from Postnet for their annual Sinthumule Kutama Easter Soccer Challenge and the event was a roaring success.

Last Friday, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, the organisation's publicist, visited the company at the Game Centre in Thohoyandou.

He handed over a full report of the tournament to the Postnet Thohoyandou and Musina manager, Mr Marubini Mapholi.

He also handed a certificate of appreciation and a framed

picture of the winning team to Mr Mapholi.

"This is just to show our appreciation for what this company has done for us. We value the good work that it is doing for the community and we just pray that many make use of this company, so that they will always have something to share with the community. Our tournament was a roaring success, and we felt that we should come back to say thank you to them and acknowledge the good they are doing in the community," said Mamugudubi.

In response, Mapholi said when they helped they were just performing their social responsibility and did not expect anything in return. "It is rare to find people you have helped coming back to you just to say thank you. This organization found it neccessary to do that and it really encourages us to help them further. I just hope this will build a long-lasting relationship with the organization.

We have something in common with the organization, and that is community development," said Mapholi.

Giyani Hotspurs were too strong for the struggling Phungo All Stars and beat them 1-0 in a Safa Second Division match played at Eltivillas on Saturday.

Stars were the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in their putting more pressure on the defence of Spurs for the better part of the match.

The Giyani lads missed a golden opportunity in the eighth minute when Stephen Ngobeni shot wide from the penalty area. Realising that their midfield was weary, the technical department of the Spurs introduced Kulani Mbombi for Sydney Maluleke.

Stars took the match to their opponents late in the match. The second half was characterised by dangerous play from the home team's players.

In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed some yellow cards in quick succession.

Nhlanhla Mkhize and Tondani Nkhumeleni for Stars were booked for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play.

Thabo Malane of Spurs dribbled past three defenders in a row and sent an excellent pass to the unmarked Lesley Malayane, who beat keeper Reason Mbedzi easily.

Black Leopards to prey on students?

After a break of about two months, it will be business as usual for the teams campaigning under the banner of the Absa Premiership next week.

Three matches will be played on Tuesday, February 12, while the remaining fixtures will be played the following day.

Black Leopards will resume their league activities by hosting Bidvest Wits at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Leopards and Wits drew 2-2 in their first-round match at the Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg seven months ago.

The rookies, University of Pretoria, are geared to give Lamontville Golden Arrows a soccer

Young Santos will want to avoid dropping more significant league points after sharing the spoils with Mukula Avalon at home last Saturday.

Dynamos vs Mpumalanga Aces The National First Division teams will play their preliminary matches for the Nedbank Cup next Wednesday afternoon, February 13. Dynamos should regard themselves lucky as they will play their preliminary match at their home ground, Giyani Stadium.

The pride of Giyani will host Mpumalanga Black Aces. Aces are the current log leaders, and for that reason Dynamos must be ready for war if they are serious about proceeding to the next stage of the prestigious competition. Aces have recently acquired the services of two seasoned players from the Absa Premiership side, Bloemfontein Celtic.

In the other Nedbank preliminary fixtures, Sivutsa Stars will host African Warriors at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit. The Cape Town

derby between Vasco Da Gama and Santos will be played at the Parow Park Stadium and FCAK will travel to Polokwane, where they will rub shoulders with Polokwane City at the University of Limpopo Stadium.

United FC will pin their hopes on their two killer strikers, Jeffrey Mokoena and Andrew Makena, for goals when they host Roses United at the Maruleng Stadium in the Free State. Thanda Royal Zulu will be the visitors in their match against Milano United. The match will be played at the Grassy Park Stadium.

Witbank Spurs and Blackburn Rovers will test each other’s strength at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank.

Jomo Cosmos will meet FC Cape Town at the Johannesburg Stadium.

All matches are scheduled to start at 15:00.
