Smail kry dag in die hof Die 65-jarige Alexander Smail van Buysdorp se moordverhoor het vandeesweek begin.

Smail het Maandag weer in die Louis Trichardt Streekshof verskyn. Hy word daarvan beskuldig word dat hy twee jong mans van die Buys­ge­ meenskap, Cornelius Bruce Joachim (20) en Sergio Bozario Buys (21), koelbloedig doodgeskiet het.

Buiten die twee klagte van moord, staar hy ook twee klagte van poging tot moord in die gesig.

Dié insident het in Desember 2009 plaasgevind naby Smail se onderneming in Buysdorp. Daar is ook ‘n hoeveelheid kontant in sy besit gevind. Sy verduideliking aan die polisie was dat dit sy salaris was wat hy by sy werkgewer ontvang het. Omdat die man glo ‘n Zimbabwiër is, is hy deur die polisie in hegtenis geneem sodat sy paspoortbesonderhede nagegaan kon word. Dié man het Dinsdag in die Louis Trichardt Distrikshof verskyn op ‘n klag van roof. Sy saak is uitgestel tot en met 27 Februarie.

Ouers sit skouer aan die wiel

Die opruimingswerk in Andersonstaat het op Vrydag (1ste) begin. Eerste aan die beurt was die skoonmaak van die parkeerrylaan waar die busse moet stop. Mnr. Pieter Leonard (links agter), beheerraadslid vir terrein en geboue, en mnr. Theo Muller, adjunkhoof van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt, saam met vier van die arbeiders wat deur verskillende ouers beskikbaar gestel is vir die projek.

Is dit dieselfde straat? Drie graad 8-leerlinge stap vir die eerste keer op ‘n skoon parkeerlaan. Van links na regs is Llewellyn Rowles, JP Venter en Divan Harmse.

“Moet hier eers weer ‘n kind doodgery word voordat die munisipaliteit iets doen?”

Dit was die vraag wat mnr. Henry Denner, hoof van Hoërskool Louis Trich­ ardt, aan die Makhado Munisipaliteit gevra het.

“Ek het vir die waarnemende burge­ meester [me. Mildred Sinyosi] en die afvaardiging wat ons skool op 17 Janu­ arie met ons uitslae kom gelukwens het, gesê dat daar ‘n paar jaar gelede ‘n kind op ‘n motorfiets doodgery is, omdat die munisipaliteit nie gehoor gegee het aan die gedurige versoeke van die skool om spoedwalle te bou nie. Eers na die dood van die kind het hulle die spoedwalle kom bou,” het Denner gesê.

Sedert September 2011 sukkel die hoër­ skool met die padwerke in Andersonstraat wat net nie kan klaarkom nie. Die kinders stap in die strate, omdat die sypaadjies vol bourommel lê. Om die situasie nog onvei­ liger te maak, het ‘n stroom riool vir weke lank in Andersonstraat afgeloop. Moto­ riste wat vir die rioolstroom uitgeswaai het, het telkens ook die kinders wat nie in die riool wou stap nie rakelings gemis.

Denner het ook dié probleem met Sinyosi opgevat tydens haar besoek.

Sinyosi het daar en dan ‘n oproep gemaak en die verstopte mangat is binne ‘n uur oopgemaak. Ongelukkig het die volgende mangat, slegs tien meter daar­ vandaan, op 21 Januarie begin oorvloei.

Dit het daaglikse oproepe vanaf die skool, aanmoediging van die DA en dreigemente gekos, voordat die tweede mangat uitein­ delik einde Januarie oopgemaak is.

Vir die ouers was hierdie slakkepas waarteen die munisipaliteit reageer net onaanvaarbaar en op 28 Januarie is daar tydens ‘n beheerliggaamvergadering be­

sluit dat die ouers self die probleme gaan begin aanspreek. Die verwyder van die bourommel was eerste op die lys.

Op Vrydag, 1 Februarie, het die werk begin. Ouers het masjinerie en bakkies geleen, werkers gegee en self ook kom werk. Saterdag het selfs ‘n paar leerlinge kom handjie bysit. Teen Maandagmid­ dag was die straat se netjiese voorkoms opvallend en op die parkeerlaan reg langs die tennisbaan was daar nie ‘n krieseltjie bourommel te bespeur nie.

“Nou kan die busse darem weer hier stop,” het Divan Harmse gesê. “Mense kan nou sien hoe skoon ons skool is,” het Llewellyn Rowles trots bygevoeg. Die twee is albei Graad 8-leerlinge.

“Trotse Triegie” is die skool se leuse vir hierdie jaar.

“Die beheerliggaam se groot inisiatief pas dan ook in by ons leuse,” het die ad­ junkhoof, mnr. Theo Muller, gesê en verwys na die goeie gees onder die ouers.

“Ek is hier omdat ek omgee vir die kinders, die skool en die dorp. Ek moet my werk los om hier te wees,” het een van die ouers, mnr. Hennie Coetzee,

Maandag gesê.

“Dit is interhoër oor twee weke en dit is hartseer dat dit so sleg hier gelyk het, terwyl miljoene aan kontrakteurs betaal is,” het mnr. Jacques Bouwer, wat sy ar­ beiders van die plaas af gebring het, gesê.

“Ons help graag, maar eintlik is dit ‘n onbillikheid - dit is die munisipaliteit se werk!” het mnr. Johan Laubser gesê.

Intussen het die kommunikasieafdel­ ing van die munisipaliteit laat weet dat ‘n kontrakteur vanaf Maandag in Munnik-, Stubbs- en Andersonstraat besig sal wees.

Maandag was daar egter geen teken van enige kontrakteur in Andersonstraat nie.

“Baie dankie aan die beheerraad vir die inisiatief. Hulle en die ouers het regtig hard gewerk,” het Denner gesê.

Mnr. Pieter Leonard, beheerraadslid vir terrein en geboue, was die dryfveer agter die projek. Almal wat gehelp het word bedank, insluitende Rampie Gilfillan van Lenaka Plant Hire, Stanley Thompson van Thompson Motors, Jaco Oberholzer van Delta Blue, Rubicon, Helena Grobbelaar, Jacques Bouwer en Jimmie Moodie.

Die skoongemaakte sypaadjie in Andersonstraat waar leerlinge uiteindelik weer kan loop sonder om oor bourommel en voor voertuie te struikel.

Sumbandila Scholarship Trust boasts outstanding results The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust, in partnership with Ridge­w ay College in Ma­ kha­­do (Louis Trichardt), is a non-profit organisation which provides full scholarships to private schools, as well as Saturday and holiday schools, to rural children in the Vhembe District.

The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust was founded in 2007 by Leigh Bristow, who is now the executive director of the trust.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and outstanding potential.

The process of selecting the first children for the full schol­ arship programme brought the Sumbandila Trust into contact with a group of learners who, although they were not selected, were nevertheless talented, am­ bitious and capable of perform­ ing very well academically. All of these learners attend rural secondary schools throughout

the Vhembe district, and Sum­ bandila provides intensive aca­ demic support and mentorship in core areas.

Last year saw the first group of Sumbandila students sitting their matric exams. Their results were outstanding: * Hulisani Nekhavhambe (seven distinctions: maths, science, life science, English, geography, life orientation and Venda); * Yvonne Mulaudzi (five distinctions: maths, science, life science, geography and life orientation); * Musundwa Mugodi (four distinctions: maths, science, English, and life orientation); * Thompho Ndou (four dis­ tinctions: maths, science, Eng­ lish en Venda); and * Tshilidzi Siavhe (three distinctions: maths, life science and life orientation).

Limpopo increases annual pass rate Limpopo increased its matric pass rate by 3% from last year and stunned the country by producing the three top pupils in mathematics and physical science and the overall top performer.

Limpopo’s star pupil is Mma­ di­k getho Komane of GlenCowie Girl’s High School in the Sekhukhune District. Komane scored 100% (thus 300 out of 300) for mathematics, physical science and accounting. With a total of 1730 out of 1800 for her best six subjects, excluding life orientation, Komane was announced the country’s top performer.

Kamogelo Mamashela also obtained 100% in both maths and physical science. He is from Pax High School in the Capricorn district. The three top learners in maths in Limpopo and also in the country were Ko­ mane, Mamashela and Shruthie Anne Thomas of Capricorn High School. The best three physical sciences learners in the coun­ try were once again Komane and Mamashela, together with Farisani Bienie Ramabulana

of Maneledzi Secondary in the Vhembe district. The Vhembe district improved its matric pass rate to 76.8%. This is 6.5% up from last year, more than double the marked increase of the Lim­ popo Province.

In Limpopo, 78 211 Grade 12s entered the 2012 national senior certificate examinations, of whom 77 360 actually sat for the examination and 51 745 of these candidates passed. Of these, 15 324 qualified to go to university.

This represents an increase of 2 378 from last year’s candidates who could go to university.

The provincial pass rate is 66.9%, which is an 18% increase since 2009. The national pass rate is 73.9%, which is up 3.7% from last year. Limpopo took position eight out of nine prov­ inces, with Gauteng (83.9%), the Western Cape (82.8%) and the Free State (81.8%) in the first three positions.

The school in Limpopo that improved the most was Shayan­ dima Secondary in Vhembe.

They increased their pass rate by 45.5%. The worst-performing school was Alpha Secondary

School in the Capricorn District, with a 0% pass rate.

The Vhembe District had 11 schools in the top 30 schools in the province, according to the pass percentage. The top two Vhembe schools were Mbilwi Secondary (99.3% pass rate) in position six and Thengwe Secondary (99.3%) in position seven. The other nine schools were Miriyavhavha Technical Secondary, Thohoyandou Sec­ ondary, Hoërskool Eric Louw, Nwaridi Secondary, Shayan­ dima Secondary, Dlamani high, Edison Nesengani Secondary and Lwamondo High. The top three schools in Limpopo, ac­ cording to learners who qualified for university, were Mbilwi, Thengwe and Hoërskool Piet­ ersburg.

Vhembe had 16 learners un­ der the top 30 performers in the province and four under the top 10. They are Dzulani Thanyani of Mbilwi Secondary (9th), Ntwanano Shitolani of EPP Mhinga Secondary (8th), Nduvho Munyai of Mbilwi (6th) and Bienie Farisani Ramabulana of Maneledzi.

Bravo Christian School of Victory in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has now started an FET phase of the national curriculum, whereby students who wish to do so can enter Grade 10, progress to Grade 12 and obtain a certificate through the Independent Examination Board.

Municipal workers, led by the municipal man­ ager, Mr Johnson Mathivha, did not want to be left behind in this community-building initiative.

All managers got down in the scorching sun with courage and enthusiasm. Phiri says it was very important to do something with the community in the spirit of Vuk’uzenzele (do it yourself). “It will take some time before we mobilize resources and money to replace the roads and, as responsible citizens, we couldn’t just sit and relax while our communities needed improved lives out there.”

Phiri thanked everyone who took part during the initiative. “We are happy with the response we got from our community members who volunteered their time to come and assist here today. It is very important for us to sustain our noble spirit of join­ ing hands, and to remind all of us of the need to entrench the spirit of Vuk’uzenzele. A lot of hard work lies ahead, and this requires each of us to lend a hand, in the true spirit of volunteerism and nation building.”

One of the community members who volunteered his time to fix the roads, Mr Abel Mbevhana, said “this is what we really call cooperative governance.

I did not think twice when I heard that the mayor wants us to come and assist the municipality here today. I decided to put aside everything because I know that the community also benefit from our efforts. I encourage other community members to work hand in hand with our municipality to create a better life for all.”

St Mark’s Anglican Church in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) will host its traditional pancake after­ noon and evening on Tuesday, 12 February.

Moms can take a break from cooking and buy pancakes for supper at the church, situated at 128 Munnik Street, from 17:30 to 20:00.

• ANNUAL BLYDE XFEST The

annual Blyde Xfest will be hosted at Blyde Ad­ venture Camp from 1 March to 3 March.

This year, there will be mountain bike races for children and adults, as well as kayak races for paddlers. For the rest there will be croc­and­tube races on the Lower Blyde River at the camp.

This activity is loads of fun and suitable for anyone. It entails a race with a partner in a tube and then in a croc raft down the two largest rapids of the Lower Blyde River. The first 20 entries for the croc­and­tube races will receive an official Blyde Xfest 2013 T­shirt. All these events take place on Saturday.

• TURBI HILLS MTB RACE The MOTHs of the Turbi Hills Shellhole in Makhado (Louis Trichardt), in conjunction with the Soutpansberg Town Watch, will once again be hosting their Turbi Hills Mountain Bike Race in the Roodewal Plantation (Ridgeway Independent School) on 9 March.

The race comprises a 50km, 30km and 8km race. The entry fees for the three races are R100, R60 and R30 respectively, with first, second and third place prizes. Registration will take place from 17:00 until 19:00 on 8 March and from 06:30 to 08:00 on the day of the race.

Martie Truter, die einde van November afgetree het, maar steeds aanbly as ‘n onderwyser in ‘n beheerraadspos.

“Daar was dus ‘n vakante adjunkhoofpos. Trie­ gies se getalle het nie meer twee adjunkhoofde toegelaat nie en me . Fourie is herontplooi na ons,” het Whiteley gesê.

Mev. Adri Denner groet Hoërskool Louis Trichardt na ‘n 20-jaar dienstydperk. Die gemeenskap en leerlinge sal haar veral onthou as puik Afrikaanse onderwyser, hoewel sy ook in ‘n stadium hotelhouding en spyseniering aangebied het. Adri se aansoek om vervroegde aftrede is deur die onderwysdepartment goedgekeur. Sodra die departement haar eggenoot, mnr. Henry Denner (skoolhoof), se aftree-aansoek goedkeur, sal die egpaar na Gordonsbaai verhuis. “Ons hoop dat dit sal gebeur voor die begin van die tweede kwartaal,” sê Adri.

Young rhino activists speak out on 50/50 Our interview is probably the best thing that has happened to our project so far,” said Casper-John.

The footage for the insert of the 50/50 interview that will be aired, had already been shot in Decem­ ber last year when 50/50 presenter Faye Peters, producer Susan Puren and their photographer travelled to Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Casper-John and Marco envisaged a couple of possible projects for this year. There may be a Rock for Rhino event with a superstar invited and they may have a stall at the CANSA Relay for Life.

Ridgeway’s Cycle Race will donate some of the proceeds to their save-the-rhino project.

The two young save-the-rhino activists from Makhado (Louis Trichardt), Marco Marcos and Casper-John Venter, will later this month feature in the popular conservation programme 50/50 on SABC 2.

“We did our 50/50 interview!” said the two, both students of the Ridgeway Independent School. The broadcast will be on 18 February at 19:30.

“It was nice but kind of scary with the gigantic cameras. We were interviewed by Maurice Carpe­ de,” said Marco (11). The interview took place on 28 January. Casper-John (also 11-years-old) said that having entered the studio, they first did a warm up. One of the questions was how much money they had raised.

“I answered that we had raised between R7 000 and R8 000 so far. Then they said they had a surprise for us. I thought they would donate something to us, but it was really a big surprise...”

Casper-John said. Into the studio came Rico, the rhino-horn sniffer dog that they support and their school’s mascot. They were overjoyed.

“Rico has sniffed R33 million worth of rhino horn, elephant tusks and skin. He is going to live in with the owner of the company and will not be staying with the other sniffer dogs in the kennels,” said Marco, very proud of their champion dog.

Fear as incidence of malaria increase The Vhembe District Municipality is concerned about the high incidence of malaria in the area.

A spokesperson for the municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said the heavy rains that had fallen since the begining of the year “will surely have a negative impact on the health of our people, especially in Mutale and the Musina local municipality.”

Although no death has been reported so far, Ralushai says a higher number of malaria patients than usual has been admitted to different hospitals around the district since the rain started. “Another challenge is that some of the families are now roofless since their houses collapsed because of the floods. Some of the families are staying with their relatives, but there are those who are staying in tents we provided for them. Tents expose them to mosquitos, which makes them vulnerable and possible victims of malaria,” says Ralushai.

His other concern is that most of the areas that are known to be at high risk for malaria, such as Ha-Mutele in Mutale, areas towards the Kruger National Park and Pondrift, are isolated from other areas as their bridges have been washed away.

“Because of the damaged roads and bridges in those areas, it is difficult for our ambulances to reach patients,” he added.

“Our main worry is that the rain is still pouring, which makes it difficult to address the situation.

We are promising our people that we will continue doing our best with the help from NGOs like the Red Cross and others, “ said Ralushai.

Elektrisiën se vyf minute herstel kos pensionaris toe ‘n aardige bedraggie

or die algemeen is ons almal moedeloos oor sake in ons dorp, provinsie en ons land. Dit kan enige regdenkende mens begryp en ver­ staan.

Ek het egter ‘n klippie in my skoen waarvan ek graag ontslae wil raak, maar terselfdertyd ook ‘n waarskuwing aan ons dorp se inwoners rig deur middel van die Zoutpansberger.

Ons stoof se oond wou nie werk nie. Ek vermoed toe dat die fout dalk die smeltdraad, beter bekend as ‘n ‘fuse’, is. Ons draai toe die smelt­ draad uit en stap na ‘n handelaar, wat my vermoede bevestig. Ek koop toe ‘n nuwe, dink dit was R9,50 en by die huis gekom, draai ek die nuwe in, maar nog steeds is daar fout. Ek moet erken van stowe en elektriese dinge weet ek min.

Ek bel ‘n elektrisiën, maar hy is tans uitstedig en belowe om een van sy werknemers te stuur. Die middag kom die man toe hier aan. Hy bekyk die smeltdrade, draai die oond s’n uit, buig die koperplaatjie wat kon­ tak moet maak effens op, draai die

smeltdraad terug, en siedaar … alles reg. Wat ‘n verligting!

Ek het gedink dat dit my dalk baie geld gaan kos, maar dit was in vyf minute opgelos. Op my vraag wat die koste is, antwoord hy dat sy werkgewer ‘n rekening sal stuur.

Die rekening het gekom! ‘n Hele R421,80! Ek skryf dadelik ‘n e­pos om ‘n verduideliking te vra. Die antwoord? Dit is hul koste! Ek moet betaal (Nou betaal hierdie ou pen­ sionaris maar maandeliks af!)

Ek wonder maar net hoe vergelyk hierdie tarief met die van proku­ reurs, dokters, terapeute, ensovoorts.

Mense met jare se studie. Om nie eers van onderwysers te praat nie.

Nou my waarskuwing: Moenie sommer elektrisiëns of selfs lood­ gieters laat uitkom nie. Vra eers wat die KOSTE naastenby sal beloop.

S

unday, or the Lord’s Day, is a wonder­ ful day. For the Christian it should be the best day of the week, because it reminds us of the resurrection of our Saviour. Christ rose from the dead on the first day of the week. Sunday is the day when Christians meet with one another to worship God and give thanks for their salvation in Jesus Christ.

But can you imagine how the friends of Jesus must have felt when they saw Him die upon the cross? John 16:20 says they wept and lamented about what had happened to Jesus. In Psalm 30:5 we read some wonderful words: “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Sometimes we think we shall never be happy again, but as time goes by happiness returns.

Now think of the disciples and others who saw Jesus crucified. How they wept.

But three days later their weeping gave way to joy, as they learned that Christ had conquered death.

When Christ’s friends met Him again at first they could not believe their eyes.

Jesus was alive. Now the tears were gone.

Their sorrow was turned into joy.

If you are a Christian you have reason for sorrow. Your sins nailed Jesus to that terrible cross. But there should also be real joy in your heart, for Jesus has dealt with your sins. God has forgiven you for the sake of Jesus. And the best is yet to come, for one day we shall see Jesus, our Saviour, face to face and enjoy Him for ever. There will be no more sin, no more tears, just everlasting joy in the presence of Christ.

SANRAL quick to reduce speed limit SANRAL acted with great speed to reduce the speed limit at the dangerous Waterpoort Tjunction on the N1 North.

On 24 January, the Zoutpansberger reported on the many accidents at this junction. The very next day, SANRAL had sent out their team and 120km/h, 100km/h and 80km/h speed limit signs were put up on either side of the junction.

SANRAL said that they had already placed high-visibility signs on the R523 (Waterpoort Road) and rumble strips to warn motorists on the approach to the N1 T-junction.

Te midde van die voortslepende waterkrisis het ‘n afvaardiging van die Vhembe Distriksmunisipaliteit (VDM) nie daarin geslaag om ‘n vergadering met AfriForum betyds by te woon nie.

Die vergadering sou aanvanklik op Maandag (4de) in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) plaasvind, maar dit het nie. Daarna sou die vergadering Din­ sdag om 14:00 plaasvind, met ‘n perskonferensie om 15:00, wat ook nie plaasgevind het nie.

“Die vergadering met AfriForum het misluk omdat die sluiting van die pad weens ‘n padon­ geluk die Vhembe amptenare verhinder het om in Makhado uit te kom,” het VDM woordvoerder mnr. Matodzi Ralushai Dinsdagaand per SMS gesê.

Die VDM is die wateroutoriteit wat water aan Makhado (Louis Trichardt) moet verskaf. Die plaaslike AfriForum-tak sê dat die tyd van mooi­ praat verby is en dat hulle opdrag gegee het dat die regsprosesse vir minagting van die hof in werking gestel word. AfriForum het in Oktober verlede jaar ‘n hofbevel teen die VDM verkry. Die doel van hierdie week se vergadering sou ingesluit het ‘n deeglike bespreking van dié hofbevel.

“Ek vind dat Vhembe se fokus nie op die hof­ bevel is nie. Daar word gesê dat ons na die groter prentjie moet kyk, soos na die Nandonidam se nuwe pypleiding. Ek het die waarnemende tegniese bestuurder van Vhembe telefonies gevra of hy die hofbevel gelees het en hy het te kenne gegee dat hy nie bewus was dat daar ‘n hofbevel teen Vhembe is nie!” het die plaaslike AfriForum voorsitter, mnr.

Kommentaar oor die dreigende regsprosesse vir minagting van die hof is van Vhembe gevra.

“Wat die saak (issue) van die hof betref, bly die munisipaliteit steeds toegewy daaraan om water te verskaf, maar respekteer ook die regsisteem.

Ons is oortuig daarvan dat die oplossing by ons almal saam lê,” het Ralushai gesê. Hy kon nie ‘n tydsraamwerk in verband met die voltooiing van die Nandoni-pypleiding gee nie, maar het gesê dat daar mettertyd met alle rolspelers gekommunikeer sal word.

“Die ironie is dat die waterkrisis nou erger is as voor die hofbevel. Dit lyk of dinge buite beheer is. Die persoon wat die finale verantwoordelikheid moet aanvaar, is die munisipale bestuurder van Vhembe,” het Schultz gesê en ‘n vergadering met hom vir Donderdag geskeduleer. “Donderdag se vergadering het egter geen relevansie om die minagting van die hof te keer nie. Vhembe het reeds hul spertye gemis. Dit is net om kontak te bewerkstellig om die werk gedoen te kry,” het Schultz gesê.

Intussen is die groot vraag: “Waar is die water?”

Op 5 Februarie het Ralushai gesê dat “Makhado nog water ‘uitdagings’ beleef, maar dat dié verdien­ stelike saak aandag geniet” en dat die watervoors­ iening sal verbeter.

Mrs Fatima Chindara contacted the newspaper last week out of sheer desperation after she had reported the leak in December last year. The municipality was alerted about the dilemma and responded this week that the problem had been fixed.

Die borg van die byeenkoms, mnr.

Ram­pie Gilfillan van Bridge Auto en GWM Limpopo, het sy tevredenheid met die byeenkoms uitgespreek. “Dit is die eerste jaar dat ons as borg optree. Dit is vir ons ‘n voorreg dat ons genooi is om dit te doen,” het Gilfillan gesê. Die nuwe telbord is ook deur Bridge Auto geborg.
