Community in shock after female train driver is attacked, possibly raped and then killed

Makhado was rocked by a disturbing and tragic incident when a female train driver was possibly raped before she was brutally killed on Monday morning. Ms Nare Mashamaite (48) had apparently stopped at the Makhado station to check if the train had mechanical problems, after hearing a noise coming from the train. Shortly afterwards, she was allegedly first raped and then killed by an unknown man. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that Mashamaite was in the company of her assistant female driver when she was attacked. “They were inspecting the train’s carriages, one on each side, when the suspect grabbed and overpowered Ms Mashamaite,” he said. Mulaudzi said that the other woman ﬂed the scene when she realised that something was wrong. The Makhado police were alerted and when they arrived at the scene, they discovered the body of the deceased next to the train. According to Mulaudzi, the deceased might have been strangled. The possibility that she was also raped is being investigated. No arrest had yet been made at the time of going to press. “A search for the suspect is currently underway,” Mulaudzi said. Mashamaite is a resident of Ha-

Angry residents of Musina set two cars alight and blocked the streets with burning tyres and rocks while protesting against poor service delivery two weeks ago. Community members smashed the windows of the municipal offices, the house of Simon Madamalala and the house of the driver of the mayor. Residents are accusing the local mayor, Carol Phiri, and the council’s Chief Whip, Simon Madamalala, of being corrupt, practicing nepotism and failing to reduce the electricity and water tariffs. They are demanding that the mayor and the Chief Whip resign. Police had running battles with the protesting community members for several hours during the night. Residents want Musina Municipality to reduce the electricity and water tariffs and to stop cutting off the supply of basic services to people whose accounts are in arrears. According to the chairperson of the Musina Residents Repre-

sentative Committee (MRRC), Mr Mashudu Ndou, the problems in the area started three months ago when community members started complaining about their high municipal bills, corruption and nepotism. “We are fed-up with corruption and nepotism in this municipality,” said Ndou. “We are going to fight this and we want those two to vacate their positions, since they are using municipal money for their personal interests,” Ndou added. The issue of billing was the most burning one and community members demanded that the municipality should cancel all their debts. Police spokesperson Lt Peter Mudau said the residents of Musina had gone on the rampage several times in the past weeks, demanding the removal of the mayor and the Chief Whip. “They were marching and then they ended up damaging a lot of things.” The windows of the municipal office and the Chief Whip’s office have been

smashed as well as the windows of the mayor’s driver’s car and two vehicles. “Members of the MRRC started blocking the road between Musina and the Venetia Mine,” he said. Nobody was injured during the latest incidents. Lt Mudau condemned the public violence and subsequent destruction of property. He warned that a zero tolerance policy will be followed where protestors use violence. Mudau said the police managed to arrest 25 people in connection with the protest. “They were charged with malicious damage to property. The accused appeared in court on Tuesday, 22 May,” he said. The initial suspects included 10 young children, who were released without bail. Three of the accused were denied bail. Those denied bail are the chairperson of the MRRC, Mashudu Ndou, Walter Muravha and Elisa Sakala. The case was postponed to 18 June.

Hulp benodig vir Christene in Malawi Wie kan help met boumateriaal, loodgieterspasstukke, busonderdele of geld? Dít is die veelkantige noodroep vanaf ‘n pionierssendingprojek – ‘n interkerklike Bybelskool - in Malawi. Twee inwoners van Makhado, wat in diens is by die Sola Scriptura Bible Training College naby Mzuzu in die noorde van Malawi, Ds Louis Schnetler en mnr. Tienie Venter, is tans terug op besoek in Suid-Afrika om dringend hulp te soek vir behoeftige studente en vir verskeie noodsaaklike opgraderingsprojekte by hierdie Bybelskool, wat strategies geleë is om ‘n beduidende gedeelte van sentraal Afrika met Bybelonderrig te bedien. Ds. Schnetler, die huidige prinsipaal van die kollege, sê die studente kom uit uiteenlopende

agtergronde en kerkverbande. “Die gemeenskap is besonder arm en die studente het werklike alle moontlike ondersteuning nodig. Die onderrigkoste per student beloop R145.50 per week; dit is R582.00 per maand. Ons hoop werklik dat ons hulp kan kry van plaaslike christene wat bereid is om gereelde bydraes te maak – om as’t ware ‘n student ‘aan te neem.’ Die kollege doen reeds sedert 2002 besonder goeie werk in daardie deel van Afrika. Selfs gevestigde leiers van plaaslike kerke kom hul kennis van die Bybel by ons opskerp. Al die studente is naweke deel van evangeliseringsuitreike in die streek en sommige behartig selfs prediking by omliggende gemeentes. Hul geskrewe preke word nagesien en besprekings daarvan vorm ook deel van die klasonderrig gedurende die week.” Daar is tans 40 studente, vyf werkers en twee personeellede. Die kollege, wat sowat 16km buite Mzuzu geleë is, moet sy eie krag opwek. Die bedryfskoste beloop sowat R6 000 ‘n week of R25 000 ‘n maand. Van die infrastruktuur by die inrigting, ondermeer die toilette, met bakke, pype en passtukke, moet nou opgegradeer word en ‘n doelmatige kombuis moet voltooi word. Daar is ook ‘n 60-sitplek passasiersbus wat twee wiele kort, tesame met gereedskap en diesel om die voertuig weer aan die gang te kry. Venter het volledige behoeftelyste saamgebring. Vir die busprojek word ‘n swaar domkrag en gepaardgaande moersleutel, tesame met geld vir diesel, benodig. Vir die badkamerprojek word ondermeer toiletpotte, krane, pype, passtukke, deure, skarniere en deurslotte benodig, tesame met vernis en dakverf. Vir die kombuis word dik staalplaat en (selfs stukkende) vloerteëls benodig. Heelwat sement, stene en klip, asook ruitglas, word vir al die projekte benodig. Sy is met vlieënde vaandels deur die Limpopo-Noord uitdun op 4 Mei en is na aﬂoop van die semi-finaal op 1 Junie aangewys as die Limpopo-wenner in die kategorie Afrikaans huistaal Graad 10 tot 12. Douglas, ‘n Graad 7-leerling

van Laerskool Louis Trichardt, het op sy beurt die eersteplek verower in die kategorie Afrikaans eerste addisionele taal Graad 6 tot 7. Hierdie twee wenners dring nou deur na die finale rondte, wat op 16 en 17 Augustus by die Buffelspoort ATKV-oord naby Rustenburg gehou sal word. Skole van oor die hele Limpopo Provinsie het aan hierdie semi-finaal deelgeneem. Die kompetisie was straf en die standaard van die inhoud en lewering van die toesprake was hoog. Deelnemers aan die

kategorie Afrikaans Huistaal het deur uitdunne gegaan en die groepering van die grade was in die kategorieë grade1 tot 3, 4 tot 5, 6 tot 7, 8 tot 9 en 10 tot 12. Deelnemers aan Afrikaans eerste of tweede addisionele taal het bygekom in die semi-finaal en kon teen mekaar deelneem in grade 6 tot 7, 8 tot 9 en 10 tot 12. “Dit is vir ons in die provinsie ‘n groot eer en voorreg om hierdie sprekers geluk te wens en sterkte toe te wens vir die kompetisie,” sê me. Klub in duisende ten bate van fonds Die Soutpansberggemeenskap is steeds besig om hul harte, en beursies, oop te maak ten bate van Hoërskool Eric Louw in Musina se ongelukfonds. Die fonds is gestig om lede van die skool se eerste meisieshokkiespan wat beseer is tydens ‘n gru-ongeluk in April se mediese kostes te help delg. Lede van die Louis Trichardt 4x4-klub het Sondag, 3 Junie, ook hul deel bygedra met die hou van ‘n uitstappie om geld te in vir die fonds. Hulle het op goeie noot weggespring met Ultra City Pietersburg wat R5 000 geborg en reeds oorbetaal het.

Sondag het die klub ‘n verdere R3 000 ingesamel, wat die klub se bydrae op R8 000 te staan gebring het. “Ons hoop die bydrae sal ander klubs en organisasies inspireer om ook ‘n bydrae te lewer en ‘n verskil te maak in die beseerde kinders se lewens,” het die klub gesê. Buiten vir Ultra City Pietersburg, wat as hoofborg opgetree het, is ‘n dank ook uitgespreek teenoor die ander borge, naamlik Adam Barnard, Ansie Barnard, Anni Janse van Rensburg, Ansie Zietsman, Ansie Schoombee, Arno Jordaan, Brian Jefferies, Christa Otto,

It could only be described as a miracle that nobody had died during the high-impact crash early on Friday morning (1st) on the Makhado/Sinthumule road. Three vehicles were involved in a head-on collision near the Ledig turn-off, including this minibus taxi which left the road and capsized. Fortunately, the only occupants were the driver and one passenger. According to information supplied on the scene, two people sustained serious injuries, however, while another three sustained less serious injuries.

Oudste SA-wildveiling lok belangstelling Die oudste wildveiling in Suid-Afrika, dié van Greater Kuduland Safaris van mnre. Howard en Peter Knott, is op 1 Junie vir die 33ste keer by die veilingskrale in Alldays aangebied. Aangesien dit so ‘n gevestigde veiling is, was daar weereens ‘n groot aantal kopers en, ten spyte van die ernstige droogte veral noord van die Soutpansberg, is daar self ‘n nuwe Suid-Afrikaanse rekord vir volstruise opgestel. The Soutpansberg, and more speciﬁcally Makhado, will this coming Saturday again play host to one of the country’s top cycling challenges, the 23rd annual Kremetart One Day Stage Race. Rated as one of South Africa’s top cycling events, the 175km stage race annually attracts some of the top cycling names and teams in South Africa and 2012 promises to be no different. Some of the top teams to compete include Team Bonitas (who recently took first, second and third position during the Tour de Free State), Team Europcar and Team MTN Qhubeka. Burger, Sarah Chemaly, An-Li Pretorius and Charlotte van der Merwe. On the home front, local cyclists to look out for are CP van Wyk and Christiaan Roos, especially in the 70km event. This year also sees a remarkable increase in the number of tandem entries. “The number of entries has already doubled from last year and the 175km stage race looks set to become a tandem event,” says Stanley Thompson, chairman of the P&L Hardware Cycling Club who is the host of the event. By Monday this week a total number of 1 200 cyclist have already entered online. The bulk of the entries (968) were for the 175km race, and the rest for the 70km race. The organisers, however, expect a further 300 entries to come in before the race, shadowing last year’s total of 907 entries for both races. It will, however, not only be about the road races on 9 June. In 2010 the P&L Cycling Club decided to turn the event into a complete cycling

weekend, bringing in a mountain bike section. The mountain bike races over distances of 50km, 30km and 10km will be decided on Sunday, 10 June. For the little ones, the ever popular Kiddies Race for children from under four years up to under 10 years will also take place. The 10km fun ride also promises a lot of fun with a R1 000 prize for the school with the most entries and two R250 prizes for the best dressed cyclist and the funniest bike. Also, do not forget about the air display by a Hawk from AFB Makhado on Saturday afternoon. This year’s Kremetart cycling weekend will again see an inﬂux of close to 3 000 cyclists and supporters who are expected to ﬂock to the Soutpansberg. Residents are encouraged to greet them with hospitality and even support the cyclists at some of the spectator points. Throughout the weekend, residents are also invited to visit and support the numerous stalls at the tourism information centre.

Mind the cyclists • Be patient and wait until it’s safe before overtaking a cyclist. It won’t hold you up for long and it could save his or her life. • Give cyclists enough space (at least a few metres or a whole lane if you are travelling over 60km/h) in case he needs to swerve to avoid other hazards. • Slow down – the wind from a passing vehicle can blow a cyclist over. • Don’t overtake a cyclist on a blind curve or hill. • If a cyclist is ahead of you and you are turning left, do so behind the cyclist. Overtaking and cutting the cyclist off is extremely dangerous. • Don’t pass and then slow down, or stop or turn in front of the cyclist. Sometimes the bicycle is going as fast as you are – or even faster. • Don’t overtake bicycles while in an intersection. Wait for the cyclists to cross.

Community’s help made 2012 Kremetart a success This year’s annual Kremetart Cycle Race from 8 to 10 June promises to be the biggest ever, with PPC Cement coming on board as main sponsor and pledging to pump R1 million into the event over the next three years. The event will see a major shift back towards greater community involvement and support as one of PPC’s pre-conditions with regard to their sponsorship. This entails rather making use of local skills and products than bringing in outside help. In this regard, a huge thank you goes towards the

• Always check your blind spot for bike riders before changing direction, turning or opening your car door. • Don’t get too close behind a cyclist, who has a shorter stopping distance compared to a car. • Don’t hoot. You’re likely to startle the cyclist and cause him or her to fall. • Many crashes between bikes and cars involve children, so be extra careful around schools and other places where children might be riding bikes. Young cyclists are not always predictable and can lack road sense. • Treat cyclists with respect and courtesy. The rider in front of you could be your friend or family member, so it pays to take care.

A sin not to ride mountain bike race The 2010 Kremetart was the ﬁrst Kremetart Mountain Bike race to take place on request of so many riders doing the road stage race. Travelling to Makhado for the road race and sleeping over and not doing the mountain bike ride is a sin! The three distances, a 50km, 30km and 10km leaves you with the choice depending on how your legs feel after the stage race. The routes were perfectly marked and laid out for a good ride. The 10km is ﬂat making it the perfect ride for mom and the kids. The 30km ride is for the bigger kids and fitter moms and the older riders. The 2012 ride will be a bit easier than in 2011. The riders that did the 30km and 40km rides were treated to some of the best single track, climbs, down hills and views over Makhado.

Kaapse by is steeds ‘n bedreiging

oos baie van ons boere reeds weet, is die Soutpansberg en Levubugebied, tot nou toe nog, vry van die Kaapse by (Capensis). Hierdie toestand het nie toevallig ontstaan nie maar is die gevolg van ons lokale byeboere se voorsorg om te verhoed dat ons besmet raak. Die Kaapse werkerby besit die vermoë om werkereiers te lê deur ‘n proses van partenogenese. In die Kaapse byekolonie skei die koningin ‘n baie sterk feromoon af wat hierdie proses stuit. Ongelukkig is die feromoonafskeiding van die koningin van ons geel Afrikaby nie sterk genoeg om dit te verhoed nie. Ons bye aanvaar die Kaapse lêende werker as ‘n koningin en maak hul eie koningin dood. Die gevolg hiervan is dat die werkersmag kwyn en die kolonie mettertyd uitsterf. Al wat oorbly, is ‘n handjievol Kaapse bye wat dan die lokale bye infiltreer en die proses herhaal. Die ekonomiese en ekologiese impak is enorm. Eerstens is die aantal werkerbye wat die bestuiwing van ons gewasse moet behartig, vernietig. In die tweedeplek word die inheemse byekolonies uitgewis en die hele ekosisteem ly daaronder. Plante kan nie sade maak nie en hul natuurlike saadbank verdwyn oor tyd. In natuurlike toestande het hierdie proses ‘n selfvernietigende einde. Die Kaapse bye het suid van die Plooiberge in die fynbos gebiede gebly en die geel Afrikaby in sy

gebied. ‘n Byeboer het ongelukkig ongeveer 20 jaar gelede besmette bye teruggebring nadat hy appels gaan bestuif het in die Kaap. Sedert dien kruisbesmet byeboere mekaar by staanplekke soos op die aalwyne en by die sitrus. Byeboere is dus verantwoordelik vir die voortgesette instandhouding van die bron van besmetting. Om ons gebied skoon te hou, bring ons lokale byeboere nie bye in van die suide af nie en vermy ons staanplekke waar besmetting kan plaasvind. Ons het egter nie beheer oor ander byeboere wat bye van byvoorbeeld die aalwyne af hierheen wil aanry nie. In so ‘n geval kan ons net staatmaak op die goeie oordeel van ons lokale gewasprodusente om staanplek aan sulke byeboere te weier. Ongelukkig het daar verlede jaar bye ingekom van die Springbok vlakte af en bestaan die moontlikheid dat dit weer hierdie lente kan gebeur. Die risiko is dus daar dat besmetting van ons gebied, met die gepaargaande negatiewe nagevolge, kan plaasvind. ‘n Beroep word op ons boere gedoen om te help om hierdie risiko te besweer en nie bye van elders op hul plase toe te laat nie. We regard this official Australian announcement as a victory for the causes of war crimes and abuses of basic human rights committed against Boer prisoners in the Zoutpansberg. The emotional stress and pressure that these ‘petitions’ have placed on numerous descendants in South Africa over some three (or more) years has merely added to the abuse of their basic human rights. We applaud A.G. Nicola Roxon for ‘putting the Australian government’s lid’ on the issue, just as debates in Anglo-Boer War study groups in Australian circles are doing right now. Also in Tshiozwi there is a new tarred road. How wonderful that must be for residents in the area. But there are no road markings and the shoulder of the tar has at least a 15 centimetre edge. With the first decent rains the foundation of the road will be washed away and the road destroyed forever. Indeed, it is already crumbling in many places. Surely the authorities in charge should realise that maintenance is as important as the actual building of the road? Lastly, a sad sight was the name of a local radio station being painted onto the beautiful rock outcrops along the N1 at Matoks. It appeared that it was being done by someone who paints signs as a business. I must therefore assume that the station authorised it. When will we humans stop destroying our world? Ever? Efesiërs 4:22: “Hou dan op om te lewe soos julle vroeër gelewe het; breek met die ou, sondige mens in julle wat deur sondige begeertes verteer word.” Die doel daarmee was: “Sodat die liggaam van die sonde tot niet gemaak sou word.” Met ander woorde die ou self. Wat aan die kruis vir ons gedoen is, moet nou ook in ons gedoen word. Godsdiens moet prakties in ons lewens uitwerk. Die laaste deel van Rom. 6:6 sê: “Ons is dus nie langer slawe van die sonde nie.” Dit beteken vryheid. “As die Seun julle vrygemaak het, sal julle waarlik vry wees.” Hoe kan dit waar word in jou lewe? Aanvaar dit in die geloof. Bid en vra Hom om in jou lewe te kom en jou te verander. Twintig roomyshouers en 2 300km lê en wag ... Oor bietjie meer as ‘n week durf ‘n plaaslike dokter een van die strafste ﬁetsry-uitdagings in die land aan, die jaarlikse Freedom Challenge. Dit is ‘n rit wat strek vanaf Pietermaritzburg in Kwazulu-Natal tot by Wellington in die Wes-Kaap. Die totale afstand is rondom 2 300 kilometer en fietsryers moet die afstand binne 26 dae aﬂê. Wat die uitdaging so moeilik maak, is die feit dat elke fietsryer op hom- of haarself aangewese is vir die duur van die resies. Daar is nie voertuie wat agter die fietsryers aanry nie en geen tegniese spanne of ondersteuners wat jou inwag by elke dag se “wenpaal”

nie. Die roete strek oor berge en deur riviere en die weerstoestande wissel van sneeu in die Malutiberge tot warm sonskyn in die Karoo. Die oornagplekke is sowat 100 kilometer uit mekaar, maar die fietsryers moet dikwels êrens langs die pad skuiling soek en ‘n paar uur se slaap inkry. Dr. Casper Venter is ‘n bekende in plaaslike fietsrykringe en sekerlik een van die fiksste en mees bedrewe bergfietsryers. Hy is een van die nagenoeg 50 deelnemers aan die Freedom Challenge wat in groepe van 10 wegspring. Die eerste groep vertrek reeds Saterdag (9de). Casper se groep spring op 18 Junie weg en hy hoop

om die roete in 20 dae te voltooi. Die uitdaging verg meer as net fisieke fiksheid. Om vir so ‘n lang tydperk op ‘n fiets te wees, verg ongelooﬂike deursettingsvermoë en emosionele krag. Casper berei reeds vir etlike maande intensief voor vir die uitdaging. Hy vertel dat die fietsryers hul eie klere, gereedskap, onderdele en ‘n sekere hoeveelheid kos moet saamneem. Voor die resies mag hulle 20 twee-liter roomyshouers vol pak met noodsaaklikhede soos ekstra klere, onderdele en voedselaanvullings. Hierdie houers word dan vooruitgestuur na die oornagstasies. Die fietsryers moet voorbereid wees op enigiets van ‘n pap wiel tot ‘n raam wat breek. Die oornagplekke is gewoonlik plaashuise op die roete. Hier kan die deelnemers kies of hulle vinnig iets wil eet en aangaan, en of hulle eers wil uitrus. Baie van die deelnemers verkies om op sekere dae meer as 200 kilometer te ry en deur te druk na die volgende oornagstasie. Verlede jaar se wenner en die rekordhouer, Alex Harris, het die roete voltooi in 12 dae en 15 ure en by tye net hier en daar langs die pad gerus om ‘n paar minute te slaap. Een aspek wat Casper, soos die ander deelnemers, nie kan voorspel nie, is die weer. Verlede jaar se deelnemers moes baie sneeu trotseer. Casper het nie minder nie as vier stelle handskoene ingepak om die koue weg te hou. Dit is buiten die ekstra kouse, reënbaadjies, musse en droë skoene wat saamgedra word. Die groot uitdaging in die Freedom Challenge is die navigasie. Geen elektroniese apparaat soos GPS’e word toegelaat nie en deelnemers kry 84 navigasiekaarte wat hulle van een kontrolepunt na die volgende neem. Veral die fietsryers wat vir die eerste keer aan die resies deelneem, verdwaal gereeld en spandeer baie tyd om weer by die bakens uit te kom.
