Verlede week se hewige wind- en haelstorms het behoorlik verwoesting gesaai oor die hele Soutpansbergstreek, met berigte van stormskade wat teen druktyd steeds ontvang is. Dié vernietigende storms het ook die lewe geëis van ‘n boer in die Levubu-omgewing. Mnr. Pieter Pretorius (65) was verlede Vrydag besig om ‘n boom op te saag wat deur die nag omgewaai is en op die huis geval het. “Ons weet nie presies hoe dit gebeur het dat die boom op Pieter geval

het nie – dit was ‘n fratsongeluk,” het ‘n jarelange vriend van Pretorius, mnr. Stephan Hoffman, vandeesweek aan die Zoutpansberger gesê. Hoffman is ook die voorsitter van die Soutpansberg Distrikslandbou-Unie. Donderdag se stormwinde is Vrydag opgevolg deur ‘n haelstorm. Volgens wat vasgestel kon word, het die storm oor die Makhado- (Louis Trichardt), Levubu- en Waterpoort-area getrek. Donderdagaand se sterk winde het ‘n massiewe kragonderbreking veroorsaak en Dinsdag hierdie week het die Makhado Munisipaliteit steeds gesukkel om die kragtoevoer te herstel na verskeie dele van die dorp en Levubu. Meeste boere en inwoners moes staatmaak op kragopwekkers. Die Zoutpansberger het Vrydag besoek afgelê op verskeie plase in die Levubu-omgewing. Orals langs die pad was stormskade sigbaar. “Dit lyk of ‘n trop olifante deur my piesangboorde getrek het,” het Hoffman gesê. “Dit was ‘n mini-orkaan.” Dié mini-orkaan het kol-kol oor Levubu getrek. Party plase, soos die van Fürstenburg Boerdery, het redelik ongeskonde daarvan afgekom. Ander plase soos dié van Latananda het egter veel meer skade opgedoen. Dáár is piesangbome met trosse en al platgewaai. Vyf-en-twintig-jaar-oue makadamiabome is ook teen die grond afgebreek in die storm. Volgens Hoffman het die storm tweeledige skade aangerig. Eerstens was daar skade aan strukture en dan aan oeste. Groot dele van verlede week se bemarkbare oes is tot niet, òf weens die gebrek aan elektrisiteit om rypmaakkamers te dryf, òf as gevolg van trosse wat merke opgedoen het. Tweedens, het Hoffman verduidelik, is dit in hierdie stadium baie moeilik om skade op makadamias en avokadopere te bepaal. “Dit sal mens eers werklik kan uitwerk as die oes inkom,” het Hoffman gesê. Munisipaliteit swoeg om kragtoevoer te herstel

Woeste windstorms veroorsaak chaos is groot dele van sy makadamianeute wat afgewaai (Vervolg van p. 1) Mnr. Fritz Ahrens van die plaas Sterkstroom is. Daar het die windstorm ook groot skade aangerig. Mnr. Henning Botha was Dinsdag besig om sy spanspekoes “te pak dat die biesies bewe.” Hy meen die stormwinde het nie soveel skade aangerig as die haelstorm van Vrydag nie. Ten spyte hiervan het hy gesê die boere is dankbaar vir die reënval. “Ek wens jy kon die gras sien vandag; dit is darem te mooi soos die wêreld nou hier groen staan,” het hy gesê. Hoffman het hierdie woorde beaam. “Die skade wat die storm aangerig het, was nie vernietigend nie. Ek dink boere sal dit kan absorbeer en deurtrek,” het hy gesê. Hoffman meen eerder dat boere en inwoners gefaal is deur die Makhado Munisipa liteit. “Ons het nou weereens die munisipaliteit se Mnr. Sekere areas was vir dae sonder krag, terwyl daar onder meer in die dorp gereelde kragonderbre kings plaasgevind het te midde van die herstelwerk. “Die Mara-omgewing is erg getref deur elektrisiteitsonderbrekings ná die storms, maar in die algemeen is die elektrisiteit daar herstel,” het die Makhado munisipale bestuurder, mnr. Sakkie Mutshinyali, Maandag gesê en bygevoeg dat Levubu weer elektrisiteit het, maar dat daar “nog drie pale is wat omgeslaan het”. Volgens Mutshinyali het die roetes na Tshipise weer elektrisiteit.

Die dorp het baie onder kragonderbrekings gebuk gegaan omdat een substasie nie werk nie. “Ek sou skat dat die voorsiening so 80% terug is. Ons kan steeds nog nou en dan onderbrekings verwag,” het Mutshinyali gesê. Die infrastruktuur in die munisipale gebied is erg beskadig en munisipale werkers het onverpoos gewerk. “Meeste van die wer kers het nie geslaap nie. Ten spyte van hul uitputting is hulle besig om die infrastruktuur te herstel,” het Mutshinyali gesê. Hy glo dat daar teen die naweek al ‘n groot verbetering in kragvoorsiening behoort te wees. Wat die elektrisiteit betref, is die grootste skad e Donderdagaand (31 Oktober) aangerig, maar “Vrydag was daar om die laaste skop te gee wat ons ondergekry het.” Daar kon nog nie ‘n presiese beraming van die skade gegee word nie. In Thohoyandou en Giyani het die storm verlede Vrydagnag en Saterdagoggend die ergste gewoed. Die plaaslike munisipaliteite se rampbestuureenhede sou begin om die skade te beraam.

“Hy was die rots in ons lewe,” sê dogter Die tragiese dood van mnr. Pie ter Pretorius (65) laat nie net ‘n groot leemte in die lewens van sy familie nie, maar ook in die gemeenskap. Pieter is verlede Vrydag in ‘n fratsongeluk op sy plaas dood, terwyl hy besig was met oprui mingswerk na die verskriklike windstorm. (Sien berig op voorblad). “Dis so moeilik om woorde te gee aan ‘n man wat so hemelsgroot was vir almal om hom,” het Pieter se dogter, Marelise, Dinsdag gesê. “My pa sal onthou word met groot deernis as ‘n mentor vir vele mense, iemand wat onbaatsugtig gehelp het waar hy kon.” Pieter Andries Pretorius is gebore op 27 September 1948, die derde van ses kinders. Hy

was vier jaar oud toe hy saam met sy ouers na Levubu verhuis het. Na skool het Pieter BCom (rekenkunde) aan die Universiteit van Pretoria geswot. Hier het hy ook sy vrou, Linda, ontmoet en vier kinders is uit hulle huwelik gebore. Die gesin het hulle in 1985 weer in Levubu kom vestig, waar hulle geboer het, terwyl Pie ter ook ‘n praktyk as geoktrooi eerde rekenmeester in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) bedryf het. Die praktyk het hy nog bedryf tot sy skielike afsterwe. Pieter, vertel sy familie, is geken aan sy nederigheid, eerlikheid, hardwerkendheid, en ‘n vaste vertroue en geloof in sy Hemelse Vader wat hy met liefde gedien het. “Sy lewe het om sy gesin gedraai, en hy was die rots in ons

lewe,” het Marelise gesê. Die Soutpansberg Distrikslandbou-unie (SDLU) het ook hulle innige medelye uitgespreek teenoor Pretorius se familie. “Ons wens sy familie sterkte en krag toe in dié moeilike tyd. So ‘n besonderse mens sal gemis word en sy bydrae tot die gemeenskap lê vasgemessel in die gemeenskap … ons treur saam met die gemeenskap oor ‘n man wat ‘n beduidende impak op sy gemeenskap gemaak het,” het die SDLU voorsitter, mnr. Stephen Hoffman, gesê. Pieter laat sy vrou Linda, drie kinders Liezel, Marelise en Pieter, twee skoonseuns en ses kleinkinders agter. Hy sal Dinsdag, 12 November, vanuit die NG Levubu-gemeente begrawe word.

Musikale oom Daan skielik oorlede

In Levubu, die kosmandjie van Limpopo, is daar groot skade aangerig aan piesangboorde. Party bome is met trosse piesangs en al omgewaai.

Die reën wat saam met Donderdag en Vrydag se windstorm gepaard gegaan het, het ook die bestuursvermoë van motoriste op die streek se paaie bemoeilik. Die bestuurder van dié vragmotor het Vrydagmiddag, na ´n hewige haelstorm, beheer verloor en die voertuig het geknipmes. Die voorval het op die N1 noord, naby Mountain Inn Hotel, gebeur. Hy het gelewe vir sy gesin, musiek en die natuur. Só sal nie net oom Daan Snyman se familie hom onthou nie, maar ook sy vriende. Oom Daan is Saterdag, 2 November, in die ouderdom van 68 in sy slaap oorlede ná ‘n hartaanval. “Nou is die huis leeg en stil sonder hom,” het sy eggenote, Anna, Maandag gesê. Daan en Anna het ‘n unieke liefde gedeel gedurende die 14 jaar wat hulle getroud is. Die egpaar, wat in Pretoria ontmoet het, is op 14 April 2002 getroud waarna hulle verhuis het na Louis Trichardt, waar Anna gebly het. Gedurende hierdie tyd het oom Daan ‘n boek geskryf vir sy Anna. “Hy was ‘n man wat met sy hele hart en siel liefgehad het,” het Anna gesê. Oom Daan, wat in Zeerust op 26 Julie 1945 gebore is, was deel van ‘n baie unieke tweeling. Hy en sy tweelingbroer, Peet, was een van net sewe stelle tweelinge in die wêreld wat in 1945 gebore is toe vier planete in lyn was. Verskeie artikels het al verskyn oor die tweelingbroers se unieke breinkommunikasie met mekaar. Die tweelingbroers kon mekaar se gedagtes, myle van mekaar af, lees en so lang gesprekke hê. In Februarie 1976 het Peet sy linkeroog verloor in ‘n motorongeluk. In Oktober dieselfde jaar het oom Daan ook sy linkeroog verloor. Buiten vir hulle unieke kommunikasievermoë was oom Daan ook ‘n begaafde musikant. Gedurende die sewentigerjare het hy saam met Peet en Wessel Kleinhans die musiekgroep Melodie 3 gestig, wat verskeie langspeelplate opgeneem het, en latere

jare ook CD’s. “Hy het altyd musiek gemaak,” het Anna gesê. Oom Daan word ook oorleef deur sy vier dogters Marensha, Elsie, Santie en Martie, asook sy stiefseun Kobus en 10 kleinkinders. ‘n Roudiens is Woensdag vanuit die AP-kerk Louis Trichardt vir oom Daan gehou.

Albasini water plant “a mess” No doubt residents have wondered why, more often than not, there is no water in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). “The Albasini water scheme is a mess,” is the verdict, not taking into account the fact that, of the 14 municipal boreholes to the southwest of the town, none is operational, and of the new boreholes in town, drilled at huge cost, none is linked to a reservoir. The 14 boreholes have been non-operational for quite some time, but the great shocker is what is transpiring at the crucial Albasini water treatment plant. AfriForum’s local chairperson, Mr Wally Schultz, and the deputy chairperson, engineer Duncan Campbell, spent three days at the plant over the past week. “Everything at the Albasini is a mess!” said an exasperated Schultz. After many hours, they figured out that the biggest problem (or challenge, if that term is preferred) is not the brand new pump which had been purchased at R750 000 and which had broken down much too soon, but the total mess at the plant. system is not fully operational or being maintained and not enough water is coming into the system. AfriForum has now given the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) 10 days to rectify the problems at the plant. Water from the Albasini Dam flows through zigzag channels at a certain stage to mix with the flocculent, and a brown, muddy substance forms on the surface of the water. The water then flows into a sedimentation tank. A rotation bridge depresses and opens a valve at a certain point to release the sludge. Clean water is then supposed to run into the sand filter to be purified and to run from the side channel, past the chlorine room, into transparent pipes before it is pumped out into the main line. The AfriForum delegation found, however, that neither the blade-like rotation bridge nor the important valve is working. The sludge is not being sucked out as it should, and water full of sludge runs into the sand filter, making it difficult to produce clean water fast enough into the system to be pumped. “We could see in the transparent pipes how slowly the water was dripping. Not enough water was coming in to be pumped, and the impeller shaft of the new pump became blue hot. As a result, the bearings burnt out ... Worst of all, there was no automatic switch that switched off when the water level in the transparent pipes became too low, and the staff were not doing it manually,” said Schultz. Schultz found the staff to be a major part of the problem. During their visits, they found one person sleeping in the office, another eating and another one playing games on the computer. They identified themselves as students. Schultz went to the living quarters of the person in charge on

the premises and woke him up. “He said he had worked the night shift. He is also the one who had said that nothing at the plant was working and that he had reported it. A root problem is that there are no competent people operating this important infrastructure,” said Schultz. The VDM is now going to use the two small standby pumps while the necessary changes are being made to get more water into the system, so that the large new pump can be utilized without burning the bearings. Schultz had a meeting with the newly appointed director of technical services of the VDM, Mr Walter Madimutsa, and his team on 30 October. At that stage, the main problem had been identified as the fact that the large new pump was not working properly. During drawn-out site inspections, AfriForum tried to ascertain whether the pump was truly brand new and found that it was. The sub-contractor had installed the fixed impeller shaft. Only much later did AfriForum realize that the problem could be that not enough water reached the system to be pumped, due to a dysfunctional system. A meeting with the VDM’s municipal manager, Mr Masala Makumule, and the managing technical staff had been scheduled at the Albasini plant for 08:30 this Tuesday. Only the AfriForum delegation and Mr David Mukosi, Vhembe’s Makhado water services manager, turned up. Hours later, when the municipal manager eventually turned up, Schultz had already left. “I like helping and still prefer engaging, but should AfriForum always do things that Vhembe should be doing? We now expect Vhembe to rectify the problems in 10 working days, so that the large pump can start pumping again,” Schultz said.

Agora ladies want to improve play area The ladies from Agora Club 1 in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) recently jumped in and painted the jungle gym at the local crisis centre. This is part of an on-going project for them, as the ladies want to improve the play area for the children. They are in the process of also painting stepping stones and they plan to add a sandbox and slide to the play area. Pictured are in front, from left to right, Coral Collett and Sandy van Niekerk. A sad farewell to Lenie

It was with great sadness that family and friends “We would like to take this opportunity to thank said goodbye to Mrs Lenie Kruger of Makhado all our friends and family for the love and caring (Louis Trichardt). wishes in our time of grief,” said Steve. She passed away peacefully on Friday, 25 October, in her sleep, after suffering from a very short illness. “Our loving wife, grandmother and great-grandmother will be fondly remembered,” said her family. Lenie is survived by her spouse Steve, children Stephen Kruger (and kids Bronwyn and Quintin Kruger) and Brenda Kruger (with daughter Leandra Kruger) and belated son of Lenie, Iep Kruger, as well as Amanda Kruger (daughter-in-law) with their two kids Shaun and Wayne Kruger, and the late arrival of the great-grandchild Jade. The family extended their heartfelt thanks to Dr Lappies Labuschagne, who took care of Lenie for the past 26 years. A word of thanks also went to the staff of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital, who took care of Lenie during the week that she was hospitalised. “Her wish was to go home to the place she loved and to see her garden. Kinders se kattekwaad of is daar wel ‘n spook?

Die indrukwekkende Stonehenge huis soos wat dit vertoon het in die vroeë twintigste eeu was verteenwoordigend van die koloniale argitektuur destyds in die Soutpansbergstreek. In sy boek Townspeople of the Soutpansberg gee die skrywer, Johann Tempelhoff, nie ´n aanduiding van wanneer hierdie foto geneem is nie. Dit is dus nie seker wie se twee honde op die foto verskyn nie. Bron: J. W.N. Tempelhoff.

Soms, as jy gelukkig is, kan jy glo die spook sien wat ‘n intrek geneem het in die ou statige huis aan die bo-punt van Snymanstraat hier in Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Altans, dit is hoe die storie een aand om ‘n braaivleisvuur vertel is. Ja, word daar vertel, op ‘n donker aand, reg op die voorstoep van dié huis, sit daar ‘n bejaarde tannietjie. Sy het lang, los hare, en sit altyd en tuur oor haar tuin met haar twee honde om haar geselskap te hou. As mens eers begin rondvra, vind jy uit dat dit glo al vir jare by dié huis spook, selfs in die dae wat dit nog bewoon was. Die jonger geslag van die dorp sweer hoog en laag hulle het dié spooktannie al gesien. Ouer inwoners is meer skepties. “Ek sal jou sê hoekom mense dink dit spook dáár,” het een oom gesê. “Ek was in die aand al daar en daar is rotte in daai huis.” Met al hierdie inligting was die enigste uitweg om self te gaan ondersoek te stel. So gesê, so gedaan en die spookhuis is besoek – tydens volmaan – en dit was hoofsaaklik vir veiligheidsredes... Die maan se skadu hang oor die ou huis, waarin een van die Soutpansberg se oudste en mees le gendariese inwoners, tannie Betty Noakes, tot haar afsterwe in 2011 gewoon het. Voor die huis, met die verroeste rooi-bruin sinkdak, lê ‘n gesneuwelde wildevy. Hy moes in vervloë dae pragtige skaduwee oor die massiewe tuin gegooi het, wat ‘n asemrowende uitsig oor die dorp se gholfbaan gee. Met sy rondomstoep en statige trappe wat tot by die reuse ou houtvoordeur lei, verbeel mens jou maklik jy’s in ‘n tyd toe Louis Trichardt ‘n toestroming van Britse koloniale setlaars beleef het. Vandag is die gapende vensters getuienis dat daar niemand meer in die huis bly nie. Krakende houtvloere, wat plek-plek vrot en waarop ‘n mens maar versigtig moet trap, laat mens egter begin wonder oor spoke. Elke geluid van die huis stuur tog maar ‘n rilling teen ‘n mens se ruggraat af. Die huis is eenvoudig ontwerp. Aan die een punt van die gang is die voordeur, en aan die onderste punt die agterdeur. Weerskant van die gang is daar vier vertrekke, een met ‘n kaggel met leë boekrakke aan weerskante. Gelukkig vir die volmaan, want elke kraak van daardie vloer laat

mense se hare regop staan van skrik. In die dag is daar niks onheilspellend aan die huis nie. Dié huis, wat bekend staan as Stonehenge, dateer uit die 1800’s en is tot ‘n nasionale gedenkwaardigheid verklaar. Dit was vir dekades lank die tuiste van tannie Betty. Tannie Betty het gedurende 1924 saam met haar ouers, Cyril John Laugham en Ethal May Noakes, na Louis Trichardt verhuis. Vóór die Noakes-gesin hulle intrek geneem het in Stonehenge, het die huis glo aan ‘n mev. Johanna Stevens behoort. Dit is volgens Johann Tempelhoff se boek Townspeople of the Soutpansberg. Stonehenge is gedeeltelik deur mev. Stevens en haar man Russell gebou op die plaas Highlands. Mev. Stevens, wat glo ‘n vurige Ierse dame was, het Stonehenge behou nadat sy van haar man geskei is. Sy het glo nie baie gehad om van te leef nie, behalwe die lemoenboord en ‘n paar vrugtebome in die tuin. Sy het drie seuns en ‘n dogter gehad, en wou nooit van die huis afstand doen nie. Uiteindelik moes sy glo die huis op ‘n veiling verkoop, en so het Stonehenge in die besit van tannie Bettie se pa gekom. Tannie Betty was ook ‘n groot diereliefhebber, en besoekers aan haar huis is altyd begroet deur haar lieflinghonde. ‘n Artikel van Retha Fourie, wat in 2002 in Beeld verskyn het, beskryf die waardige gryskop tannie en haar honde by wie mens kon aanklop en oor Stonehenge se geskiedenis gesels oor ‘n koppie tee. Kan dit dan wees dat die berugte “Spook van Stonehenge” dan nie maar net tannie Betty in lewende lywe was nie? Nee wat, lag die nuwe eienaar van die huis, mnr. Eddie da Silva. “Ek sal jou sê wat dit is; dit is plaaslike kinders wat hier kom drink en fuif,” sê hy terwyl hy saam met my deur die huis stap. Hy het Stonehenge op ‘n veiling gekoop na tannie Bettie se afsterwe, en het groot planne om die huis op te knap. Da Silva het intussen ‘n opsigter aangestel om die huis te beskerm teen kwaaddoeners. Daar lê ‘n gebreekte brandewynbottel by die kaggel, en al groter word die wonder of daar wel ‘n spook is…

Both schools have built halls which are nearing completion. “One bigger school is just more sustainable than two schools of our respective sizes. We worked hard to create a brand running from Grade RR to Grade 12, centering on an international curriculum,” says Ms Leigh Bristow, head of Ridgeway College and the executive head of the “new” merged school, together with her senior management team. Ridgeway Independent School, under leadership of Ms Magriet Swanepoel, has 208 learners and Ridgeway College has 180. Refugee craft supports local economy Be the first in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to join the worldwide trend to support sustainable tourism and local entrepreneurship, a global movement that feeds local economies, which form the backbone of larger economies. The Jesuit Refugee Service in town has done just that. On Saturday, 16 November, they will present their gorgeous knitted and crocheted scarves, small and larger hand-embroidered bags with beadwork and funky towels, pencil bags and scatter cushions made by 10 women of the refugee centre in town. This exhibition, at Burger Street 49, from 10:00 until 13:00, will take the form of a show, displaying what the 10 women have acquired during a 13-week training program at Madi a Thavha, a local lodge that specializes in sustainable tourism and boosting a heritage-based creative cul-

ture with workshops in various fields which international guests are particularly keen to see and even to participate in. “We only needed to guide these ladies in a programme that incorporated the whole process: from design, practical skills in sewing, knitting, and beadwork to developing a marketable textile product range, demonstrating marketing and sales expertise to learn basic business abilities and finally to present a business plan for small business development at individual and group level. They have so much talent and made stunning products during their workshop at Madi a Thavha,” says Dutch owner Marcelle Bosch, who has a master’s degree in public sector management of government and non-profit organisations in particular, from the Netherlands and has been in adult education all over Africa for most of her life. The 10 women will sell their products to generate money for re-investment in local crafts and start a business to support their families. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year, the guns fell silent. The war that was to end all wars had come to an end, but not before an estimated nine million people had lost their lives. In remembering those who died in the war and subsequent wars, Remembrance Day is commemorated annually. The Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHs) of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) will be holding their annual Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony this Sunday at 10:30 for 11:00 at their Turbi Hills Shellhole at 66 Burger Street. Monique Dique, a learner at Louis Trichardt High School and a member of the Bella Donna Modelling School, as well as a member of Model Cup SA, took part in the Limpopo provincials on Saturday, 19 October, where she won five gold medals and one silver medal. It is once again time for the Zoutpans berger and Limpopo Mirror’s very popular calendar photo competition. The region’s photographers will have until 15 November to submit their entries. This year’s prize money totals R8 400, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2-format 2014 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee. Only high-resolution photos of subjects unique to the Soutpansberg and surrounding areas will be considered for the competition. Wildlife photos are welcome, although the newspaper group would like to see more entries depicting the region’s cultural heritage, its people and landscape. The competition is limited to five

entries per photographer, which should preferably be submitted in digital format. Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition. All entries must clearly indicate who the photographer is, their contact details, where and when the photo was taken and what camera was used. Although technical aspects such as the quality and sharpness of the photo will be taken into account,

the photo should, however, only make for a nice picture. Each of the 12 winning photographs will be bought from the photographer at a price of R700 per photo. Sy rol kreunend om en haar eerste gedagte is dat iemand sowaar die son gesteel het. Dis laatmiddag. “Daisy, mmm ...,” stotter die man. “Ek het nou so gedink. Miskien moet ek jou uitvat vanaand as jou rug bietjie beter is. Wat dink jy?” Daisy glimlag en gaap lui-lui. Daar is beelde van seekos en knoffel en yskoue, droë wit wyn en geruite tafeldoeke en kerse wat verlangs haar smaakkliere begin prikkel. “Haai, Bos, het ek jou al vertel hoe wonderlik jy eintlik is?” spin sy soos ‘n sonwarm kat. “Ja, toe, toe, toe. Maar sy besluit tóg op ‘n etniese serp om haar kop en praktiese, skerpioenproef skoene in plaas van stylvolle wighakke en ‘n romantiese wit rokkie.

Die Bosbewoner maak vir haar die deur van die Landcruiser oop en probeer haar seer heupe op die sitplek laai sonder om vatterig voor te kom. Sy volgepropte bladsak druk hy agter die sitplek in. Dan onthou hy blykbaar iets en hardloop terug in die hut in. Hy kom terug met die rooi Masai kombers en gee dit vir Daisy aan om vas te hou. “Ons moet net gou eers by die winkel en die drankwinkel aangaan. Het jy ook iets nodig?” vra hy galant. “Miskien kan jy dalk net hoor of hulle al lugtyd gekry het. Hulle sou al twee dae gelede ingekry het - met ‘n bietjie geluk het Afrikatyd nou al ingeskop. En vind sommer uit of hulle al ‘n sushisjef aangestel het!” Die Bosbewoner lag en lyk besonder gelukkig dat daar geen moontlikheid van enige rou vis op sy onmiddellike horison is nie. Hy laai sonder groot vertoon die aankope agterop die Landcruiser. Dan ry hy met ‘n ewe skommelende pad teen die oorkantste oewer van die rivier af. Uit die plastieksakke haal hy bier en lemonade, smeerkaas, Lemon Creams en droë wors. “Mike-hulle is in Pretoria,” verduidelik hy. “Maar hulle sal nie omgee nie. En Daisy, dis nou nie Franse sjampanje of sushi nie, maar cheers! Ten minste kan ons vanaand eers later begin kyk na die liggies van die lugversorger!”
