“They wanted to cut off my son’s manhood” 9-year-old gets tortured for “raping” 4-year-old girl

By Maanda Bele “They wanted to cut his manhood off,” said the mother of a nine-year-old boy. This was apparently to “punish” him for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl.

The boy was tortured and beaten by a man who is presumably a friend or relative of the young girl’s parents.

The dramatic episode started last Wednesday, when the mother received a call from her own mother, who was looking after the children. She rushed home to find out what the fracas was all about.

“When I arrived home, I was told that my son had raped a four-year-old toddler.

I asked him and he denied this,” said the mother. The mother and grandmother found the fact that the boy

could or would have done something like this hard to believe.

According to the mother, she went to the grandmother of the girl, trying to resolve the matter and to apologise, should there have been any misunderstanding. “She told me not to worry because it was just children playing,” she said.

The little girl apparently told her grandmother that she wanted to urinate, but she was feeling pain in her private parts. The grandmother asked her what had happened, and the girl said she had been hurt by the boy.

“On Thursday night, an unknown man came to my house with the grandmother and the uncle of the girl. The uncle said that they went to the doctor and the doctor said it was not the first time

that these incidents happened,” said the boy’s mother.

The unknown man then proceeded to interrogate the young boy. During this interrogation, a zinc basin was filled with cold water. The boy was stripped naked and forced to sit inside the tub.

“They started beating him with a belt. The man wanted to cut off his (the boy’s) manhood, using pliers,” said the mother. “It was painful to watch. I called my mother and told her that she should expect the dead body of her grandson in the morning.”

She said the torturing incident started at around 22:00 and lasted for about 90 minutes. “The man said this was just the beginning and he would come every day to discipline him,” said the mother.

“I went again to the house (of the girl) with my mother

to ask for forgiveness,” she continued. She also showed her mother the bathtub filled with water, the pliers and the belt that was used to torture her grandson.

The family later decided to open a case of assault at the Vuwani police station. “The police told me that the girl was not raped, she was just suffering from a urinal problem,” the mother said.

The police confirmed on Wednesday that a 21-year-old suspect had been arrested in connection with the assault on the boy and appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court on 4 October. The case was postponed to 19 October.

The man was released on warning. The rape allegations will also be investigated, the police said.

Protesters close access to Elim mall

By Kaizer Nengovhela On Wednesday morning, Elim residents blocked off all entrances to the Elim Mall after the mall’s management had allegedly failed to address their demands.

Angry residents prevented people from accessing the shopping mall, causing several commuters from around the Elim area to be stranded. Shops in the area were closed for most of the morning. The protesters were blocking off roads, using stones, and they actively prevented motorists from getting past. The police had to use water guns to try and disperse the angry residents and to open the entrances to allow workers and taxi operators access to the mall.

Residents said they had been engaging with the Elim Mall’s management regarding the sewage spilling from the mall into the residential area. They are also concerned about the high rate of crime and feel that the dark areas around the mall should be lit up at night.

luma. “When we complain, we are told they will come and meet with us, but they do not. They must come and fix the spilling sewage. Residents demand that they install lights to reduce the crime. They also demand the creation of jobs,” he said.

Rasiluma said that the sewage caused such a nasty smell that residents living nearby could hardly eat any food in their own houses. The residents complain about the green flies that are in abundance. “It kills one’s appetite,” said Rasiluma.

At the time of our going to press, the spokesperson for the mall, Mr Christo Heyneke, had not yet responded to questions that were sent to him.

Officer shoots at cow, hits man

Attempts to contact the spokesperson of the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, were unsuccessful and he did not respond to requests for comment.

The acting Vhamusanda, Jubline Ramabulana, said that she had been appointed by her late father, the previous Vhamusanda. She said that the land belonged to the royal family and not to the community and she did not recognise the Muraleni local tribal council.

Ramabulana described them as a “fly-by-night” council that was not known to the royal family.

According to Ramabulana, no individual person can appoint a new traditional leader as this is the responsibility of the royal family. She explained that, according to Venda culture, the chieftaincy (Vhuhosi) is the property of the family, and the chief is the “manager” of that property. “The appointment of the successor will thus be the responsibility of the royal family,” she said.

She confirmed that she had sold the land to people who had paid for the sites. The money collected went to the Sinthumule Tribal Council and Thovhele Sinthumule, with the remaining portion going to the Ramabulana royal family.

Ramabulana said that the correct procedures had been followed when selling the land.

Each person who bought land was provided with proper documentation from the Sinthumule Tribal Council and a Permission to Occupy (PTO) certificate was issued.

Mr Albert Jeleni, a wellknown tour guide from the Vhembe region, suggested that the Vhembe District’s tourism sector and the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism close their offices as their officials’ jobs are not in the office but out in the field.

Jeleni, who represented the local tourism industry, addressed guests during the executive mayor’s business breakfast session held at the Khoroni Hotel on 30 September.

Vhembe District Municipality as part of a networking session and presented under the theme “Tourism for inclusive growth”, focused on various topics, including the impact of Covid-19 on the tourism industry, challenges faced by the sector and solutions to revive the sector. The session targeted, among others, people from accommodation establishments, hunting and safaris, travel agents and tour guides.

According to Jeleni, closing these tourism offices will help with developing good working relationships between tourism officials and the people from the tourism sector who work directly at the plants.

Another well-known tour guide from Thohoyandou, Mr Mashudu Dima, said that most of the municipalities across the Vhembe region had some wetlands that had been abandoned for many years.

Dima said the tourism sector could help to create jobs if they were promoted and encouraged at government and municipal level.

The executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, said that the district must give the small and emerging tourism sectors as much support as they could, and that they wanted these sectors to go from strength to strength.

An undisclosed amount of money was stolen at the Madombidzha fuel station early on the morning of Friday, 1 October, after two ATM machines were blown up and robbed. Petrol attendants ran for cover when the armed assailants openly bombed the ATMs, took their loot and fled.

According to one of the petrol attendants at the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, the incident happened at about 01:30. He told the media that four heavily armed men appeared and ordered them (petrol attendants) at gunpoint to cooperate. “The men were wearing masks and ordered us to lie down, and that was when they blew up the ATMs,” he said. The attendants were left shaken up and traumatized.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident. A case of malicious damage to property, unlawful use of explosives and armed robbery has been opened. “We do not know the kind of explosives that were

used to blow up the ATMs yet, but our explosives unit has already sent the findings to the forensic laboratory for tests,” he said, and added that the police would leave no stone unturned to find the perpetrators.

No arrests have been made in connection with the robbery and investigations are still continuing. The police are appealing to anyone who might have useful information to contact the nearest police station or their toll-free number 08600 10111.

Portia Ramakavhi’s killer gets sentenced to twenty years in jail

At the time of the murder, Munzhelele had allegedly accused Ramakavhi of cheating on him. A heated argument ensued at the accused’s home, after which he stabbed and chopped her with a sharp object. Ramakavhi died on the scene.

Hard work and determination can get you far,” he said. The donors plan to get together and see to it that all the learners at Fondwe Primary School receive new shoes in the near future. Limpopo Mirror got in touch with one of Vhembe’s top barbers, whose clients happen to be some of the foremost artists and entertainers among us.

Munewazwothe Mabasa (24) hails from Ha-Magidi near Sibasa but currently lives at Ha-Dumasi village. He has been in the hairdressing industry for nearly three years and operates his business in Thohoyandou P-west, Nazarene Street. His business is known as Mune Barbershop X Tattoo by Ghost.

“I developed a passion for this line of work in 2019 when I met the best barber around - Doctor the Barberman - who made me fall in love with this craft,” he said.

For the whole of 2019, Munewazwothe learned the tricks of the trade in hairdressing. In 2020, he decided to go professional and found a spot down the road at Merichie Building, opposite the Game Complex.

“My work comprises art and skill; I see myself as a hair artist,” he said.

“When I cut someone’s hair, I make sure that I bring out the best in that person. I am also a tattoo fanatic, so my haircuts tend to be clear-cut because of my love for the art of tattoos.”

His clients include celebrities such as Mizo Phyll (VenRap artist), Vhuyie Da Dj, Racha Kill, Justin Shonga and Gvoice.

“My clients always appreciate my work, and knowing this motivates me to do even better,” he said. “I prefer to use the best equipment for the job. This gives me confidence, though my hairstyles are unique as they are. I offer my clients the best service, so I can’t exactly say that I am afraid of my competitors,” he said.

He says that his current challenges lie in the need for better equipment and adequate space to operate his business. He feels that if he can get an expansive space, he can boost his clientele and employ at least one or two youths.

Dorah turns egg cartons into beautiful pieces of art

I start here … George Matemera demonstrates how he starts sculpting his art from dead wood.

Matemera now wants to pass on his carving skills Arts & Culture Thirty-three years ago, 22-year-old George Matemera fled from his country, Mozambique, during the civil war that had led to so many lost lives. With only the clothes on his back, Matemera found refuge in Zimbabwe.

With nothing to eat, the young man had to make a plan to put some food on the table and because he harbours such a hate for crime, he decided to join other young men at the local arts centre in Victoria Falls, where he was taught wood sculpting. With the harsh economic conditions in Zimbabwe, Matemera legally crossed to South Africa, where he now carves beautiful wooden sculptures in Antonvilla, Musina.

With age catching up with him, Matemera (now 55) makes a call on young people who would like to learn wood sculpturing to come on board, so that he can teach them these skills free of charge. “I have realized that most wood sculpture artists are elderly and that young people do not seem to be interested,” he said. “The fact is that we need young people to continue with this rewarding career when we depart from this earth. This knowledge should be passed on from one generation to another, so that we can preserve our beautiful art. My plan is to open an art school to equip young people with these much-needed skills.”

Matemera uses home-made axes and chisels to work with and collects dead wood from the bush to make his sculptures, because he loves nature and does not want to cut down beautiful trees.

“My home-made tools come in handy because I cannot afford big machinery to manufacture my sculptures. I then do the final touches with shoe polish, so that my sculptures can shine. My biggest problem is to get marketing exposure to display and sell my sculptures on a wider scale.

I will be happy if I can get someone to assist me with this, so I can sell my products in all corners of the world.”

An elderly woman, Dorah Tshivhase Munyamela (89) of Khalavha near Thohoyandou, makes a living by recycling waste egg cartons to craft wonderful traditional decorative bowls.

Munyamela explains that she starts off by tearing the egg cartons into tiny pieces and then puts them in a large bowl with enough water to completely cover them. She adds a couple of scoops of laundry soaps and soaks the carton chips for several hours.

“I knead it until it is fairly smooth and knead it again. It should be mixed well until the pulp is ready to use. When the pulp is ready, it will feel like clay. This mixture is my clay; there is no need to buy clay every time,” she says.

“I make pots, bowls and mugs and put them in an open space for a few hours to dry out. When my bowls are dry, I smear glue to paste lime stones and sand as my decorative style before painting them.

I use different colours, depending on different cultures,” Munyamela adds.

“People can use the small bowls

to store small items like jewellery and buttons. These bowls can also help you organise different kinds of beads. I collect calabashes from the mealie field and decorate them with colourful beads. I make traditional bracelets and traditional ties for those who like wearing traditional attire,” she says.

“I once displayed my artwork at the Thohoyandou Arts and Culture Centre and later withdrew them because I discovered that people in charge of the centre were selling my products at high prices and paying me little money. Those people were benefiting a lot out of my sweat, and it was a very painful experience,” she says.

“I don’t regret withdrawing them because tourists are buying them straight from my home. I have already displayed them in Kempton Park’s Oliver Tambo Centre and Ghanaians bought my products,” says Munyamela.

Gospel duo in line for provincial accolade

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho For two artists from the same music stable to compete against each other for the same award is indeed a rare occurrence, but such is the case for Lufuno Phalandwa and Grace Mulaudzi, both from Mukurob Music, who were nominated for the Best Gospel Hit at the fourth annual Limpopo Music Awards (LIMA) for their latest album releases, called A vha shanduki and Takuwa Yehova respectively.

The two artists are not unfamiliar with receiving top honours. In 2019, they collaborated on a song, titled Nga a rendwe, which was crowned Worship Song of the Year at the SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards in Durban.

Unlike Mulaudzi, who is still cutting her teeth as a solo artist, Phalandwa is a serial winner, with three awards

under his belt. Apart from the joint award with Mulaudzi, Phalandwa had previously won two awards at the Limpopo Gospel Music Awards.

For either Phalandwa or Mulaudzi to take the award home, they will need to overcome stiff competition from seasoned gospel artists such as like Dr Winnie Mashaba and legendary gospel guru Minister Lufuno Dagada. City Modiba and Bubu Nxumalo complete the strong line-up for the nominees vying for the Best Gospel Hit this year.

For Mulaudzi, the nomination came as a total surprise, although her song was well received by gospel lovers, and she could not have asked for more. “To be nominated among the best gospel artists in the province is a huge achievement,” said an elated Mulaudzi. “I grew up listening to Dr Winnie Mashaba and I always wanted to follow in her

footsteps, while Minister Lufuno Dagada has always been my inspiration. Being nominated in the same category with them feels like a dream. Bellafonte bombards the radio with his hits

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Bellafonte Mawela, who is regarded as one of the “godfathers” of VenRap, released a masterpiece to online music platforms last week, titled Sokolatela.

The album comprises 23 outstanding hits, including Radio Killa, Vho-Ramabuto, My Story, Shout out, Tshifhinga, Angelina, When the morning comes (ft Troj4n), and Naho ni siho (ft Thitupulwi).

“I am celebrating the gift of life through this full-length album, which took me and my team some years to complete,” said Bellafonte. “The public’s reception thereof proves that it is well cooked.”

As the son of legendary Afro singer Dr Irene Mawela, Bellafonte started singing at home at a young age. To him, music is the essence of life.

“Music is everything to me. It is the

place I go to for comfort when I feel sad, and it’s my companion in happy moments,” he said.

He believes that music is a universal language since it can communicate with audiences from anywhere.

“Because music speaks to us, it holds the key to influence,” he said. “So, basically, if the right sounds and messages are sent out through music, it has the ability to make a difference.”

He has great admiration for his famous mother and enjoyed the liberty of re-doing some of her classics, such as Ndi itwani.

“She is my inspiration. If you listen carefully to my music, you will hear my mother’s unopposed influence everywhere - from my style, delivery and sometimes even the tone of my voice. She really has a lovely voice and is a great composer.”

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Twenty-one-year-old Ronewa Bruce Mugivhi from Dzwerani Mvelaphanda village is celebrating his debut book of dramas, titled Dandetande.

Mugivhi, who is a third-year BA-student in international relations at the University of Venda, says he fell in love with writ-

ing when he was only 14 years old.

“I spent a lot of time watching and analysing soapies and imagining how this or that soapie should have ended, or how the plot should have played out instead,” he says. “My love of writing grew from that kind of critical mind.”

In 2016, he started writing stories and sharing them with friends on social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp groups, and everyone said they were really good stories. He gained more and more followers every day, and that kept his confidence alive and gave him hope that he might reach the point one day where some of his dramas would get published.

“My followers encouraged me to write a book, because they saw that I had a gift,” he says. “My late father, Musandiwa Maxwell Nelwamondo, used to support my work by buying

me data, so I could post my stories on social media. I wish he was alive now to see what I have accomplished by it.”

Mugivhi, who matriculated from Ndaedzo Secondary School in 2018, had submitted his manuscript to several publishing houses around Limpopo, without any luck, and in the end decided to self-publish his book.

“It took me five years to fulfil my dream of publishing my book,” he says.

“With the moral support of my parents, Vhutshilo Lydia Ratshimbilani and Calvin Murashiya, I managed to publish Dandetande in both hard copy and on Amazon.”

Dandetande tackles issues of corporate corruption that eventually affect the wrong people via scapegoating.

Phalaphala FM: Paying tribute to the region’s “trailblazers” Phalaphala FM has been celebrating “trailblazers” within the Tshivenda music industry across all music genres with a project called Ri fhululedza Mazhakandila. These are artists who started producing music in their respective genres and paved the way for other artists to follow in their footsteps.

All features are broadcast in the last week of the month, from Monday to Thursday. Daytime programmes share information about the chosen artists and play their music. Pre-recorded audio clips by family, friends and fellow musicians are also played for fans and listeners to get to know the artists a little better.

The artists’ pictures and short videos are posted on the station’s website and Facebook page. On Fridays, the selected artist is interviewed on the afternoon drive show, Dzia Orowa and two of the artist’s favourite songs are played.

Role players in the music industry might also form part of the live interview. Artists who have been selected for the project so far include Adziambei Band, Splash, Mutendas, Maduvha Madima, Elfaas and Simba, Emmanuel Mamphogoro, Colbert Mukwevho, and many more. These are legends who released good Tshivenda music through the years and inspired generations of artists to follow in their footsteps.

As part of celebrating Heritage Month, the station selected Mr Marcus Mundalamo, who plays an important role in preserving the language, heritage, and culture of the VhaVenda people, to showcase the best Tshivenda music and take listeners down memory lane.

Mundalamo, son of Wilson Mundalamo Rabali and Tshavhungwe Tshisikule, was born in 1965. He released several albums in his music career, namely Ndala ya Matshona in 2005, Tshivenda in 2008, Pembelani in 2010, Vhudabadaba in 2012, and Avha tendi in 2014.

Mundalamo sang at the VDAA Traditional Dance Competition held in Thohoyandou in 2006, won the SATMA Award for Best Tshivenda Album in 2007, the SATMA Award for Best Praise Singer in 2008 and the SATMA Award for Best Tshivenda Album in 2010. He a l s o won the Best Traditional Tshivenda Artist Award at the Tshima Awards in 2013 and performed at venues and events with artists such as Oliver Mutukudzi, Colbert Mukwevho, Ringo Madlingozi, Khakhathi & friends, Malaika, Thomas Chauke, and more.

Make sure that taxis are roadworthy before allowing children to board

By Bernard Chiguvare The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety called on parents and schools to make sure the transportation that learners use to and from their respective schools is roadworthy.

This follows an incident involving 15 learners who travelled in a minibus taxi that caught fire on the way to school in Elim last week.

“The learners were all rescued, but the minibus taxi was burnt to ashes,” said Matome Moremi Taueatsoala, spokesperson for the department.

“The department does

operational inspections from time to time, particularly with minibus taxis that transport school learners,” said Taueatsoala, adding that the department had impounded more than 20 minibus taxis in the Vhembe area some three weeks ago.

A long list of regulations and requirements, as per the National Road Traffic Act, exists for transporting learners. This requires that an authorised officer must be satisfied that the vehicle in question is properly registered and licensed and that a valid roadworthy certificate has been issued for the vehicle as required by the National Road Traffic Act. All vehicles used for scholar

transport must: (a) Be marked in a manner prescribed or required by the relevant regulatory entity to indicate that scholars or students are being carried. (b) Have a first-aid kit in the vehicle at all times that complies with prescribed requirements or those stipulated by the regulatory entity.

In terms of the Act, no person may operate a road-based public transport service unless he or she is the holder of an operating licence or a permit.

Should this not be the case, the vehicle may be impounded, pending the investigation and prosecution of that person.

Long-service awards for 15 years of service were handed out to six members of the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital in Louis Trichardt last week. “The 15-year batch: They were appointed in 2006 after the completion of the theatre and wards 8-12. They have seen a lot of change and survived a few matrons - Sr Drieka van der Merwe, Sr Juanita van den Berg, Sr Ina Muller and currently, Sr Dalene Steyn. They have also experienced the addition of the mobile offices in front of the hospital. They saw the building of the day ward and the addition of the container kitchen, and next year the new 92-bed hospital,” said Dr Anton Stroebel (director) during the ceremony on 30 September. Lwamondo’s “young boys” in SAB

By Silas Nduvheni A group of young boys from the Lwamondo villages in Thohoyandou used to play only friendly soccer matches for Sigobela before they were transformed into the Lwamondo Mighty Brothers in 2020. Today, they are a proudly affiliated soccer team and have just been promoted to the SAB League.

“I used to work at Vuwani Magistrate’s Court as a legal representative and it concerned me that so many of the crimes presented to court were committed by young people from the Lwamondo villages.

I was born and raised here

and decided to do something for the young people, to keep them busy and off the streets.

And that was when Lwamondo Mighty Brothers was formed,” founder and managing director of the team Ernest Nemusimbori said.

Vhembe’s borehole operators march to get the promised permanent jobs

By Bernard Chiguvare On Monday, 27 September, more than 50 borehole operators from the Vhembe District marched to the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) in Thohoyandou, demanding to be hired as permanent employees.

According to Lovemore Mayimele, one of the borehole

operators, the VDM hired 319 volunteer borehole operators in 2013, with the promise to employ them permanently. In 2019, only 140 had received permanent employment while, from August 2020, the remaining 179 were included in the Extended Public Works Programme.

“This is not what the municipality promised us. We need to be employed permanently,” said

Mayimele, adding that some of them had replaced former borehole operators who had been employed permanently.

The volunteers said that, if their demands were not addressed soon, they would stop the ANC’s door-to-door voter campaign and close boreholes in their respective villages.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror, one of the protesters, Ruth Maluleke, said, “I have worked

for a long time, anticipating a permanent job, but this now seems to have been just a dream.”

Lim residents enjoy Big Walk event

By Bernard Chiguvare Several hundred people young and old – arrived at the Makhado Show Grounds on Sunday, 3 October, to participate in the Limpopo Provincial Big Walk 2021.

The colourful event marked the beginning of National Sports and Recreation Month in October.

Participants had the option of running or walking the 5km, 10km or 15km distances.

Mushwana, acting head of the Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, the department decided to take the event to Makhado to honour Paralympic medallist Sheryl James. James participated in the Tokyo Summer Paralympic Games in Japan last month and returned with a bronze medal.

James encouraged people to take on some form of daily activity, as she believes it contributes to good health. “Go out and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Staying active and healthy makes you enjoy life more,” she said. After nearly two kilometres, 68-year-old Tshishami Takalani was still among the leading group of walkers. Then she started to jog!

Smiling, Takalani said, “I like such activities because it keeps me healthy. When I turned 60, I realised that I should do regular exercises, even if it is just at home.” When Takalani spoke to Limpopo Mirror, she had been jogging for almost 500 metres.

Wheelchair-bound Innocent Vhumbani also participated in the 5km walk. He shared his own words of encouragement, especially to the disabled.

“Anything is possible. Look at Sheryl James; she is a Limpopo Paralympic bronze medallist.

And if I can do it, anyone is capable,” said Vhumbani, who had participated in several national disabled sporting activities before.

The icing on the cake after the Big Walk was when participants were treated to some aerobics.

Limpopo Silver Stars Soccer Academy came back from a 0-1 deficit and beat Maniini Real Madrid 2-1 in their Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO competition at the Budeli Mphireleni Grounds on Sunday.

Real Madrid approached the game aggressively, giving the Stars’ defenders no time to breathe. Ntwanano Govani, the Stars’ captain, was a marvel to watch throughout the game. Govani managed to extinguish a number of flames in the first 20 minutes of the game. At that stage, the strikers of Madrid, Karabo Dzivhani and Pfano Magadidzha, were knocking on the Stars’ door time after time.

Real Madrid’s efforts did not pass without reward. Their solitary goal came in the 29th minute. Karabo Dzivhani blasted in a rocket after a scramble within the Stars’ box. Real Madrid lost cohesion after the goal. They played the remaining part of the first half with their backs against the wall.

Silver Stars came back from the half-time break with more self-confidence. Realizing that the Stars were unstoppable, Real Madrid tried to strengthen their defence by introducing Rolivhuwa Mulaudzi, who Ntiyiso Chauke of Real Madrid (right) and Tshimangadzo replaced Pfano Magadidzha.

Maindis Ladies beat Richmond 3-2

By Frank Mavhungu Maindis Ladies registered their second victory in a row when they crushed Richmond United Ladies 3-2 in their Hollywood Bets Super League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

The game was a see-saw battle, with the teams knocking on each other’s door constantly.

Maindis were leading 2-0 at one stage. The visitors from De Aar in the Northern Cape did not give in without a fight, despite the fact that Maindis were looking unstoppable after scoring their second goal.

The home side opened their account in the 25th minute.

down in the 20-metre area. The team’s captain, Xiluva Tshabalala, beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick.

Tieho Mofokeng of United was reprimanded with a card a little later. She tackled Vutivi Sithole from behind and the referee, Mr Fortunate Ngobeni, was lenient enough not to let her see red.

Maindis increased the lead in the 34th minute. Vutivi Sithole beat the offside trap and showed the United keeper, Ntambose Chabaku, the wrong way.

United regrouped from behind towards the end of the first half. They pulled one back in the 44th minute. Mathapelo Mokgeti was on target, following a heart-breaking scramble within the box.

Maindis enjoyed their 2-1 lead until the end of the first half. They introduced Madembe Tshikumbu at the expense of Thembi Munyuku three minutes into the last half.

United scored the equalizer in the 65th minute. Michelle Sampson found the net with a ground cutter, following a square pass from Hilda Xaba.

Xiluva Tshabalala of Maindis was booked for a late tackle on Malebogo Shawe. Maindis did not lose hope after United scored the equalizer. They reclaimed the lead through Molepo Rapatsa 10 minutes before the final whistle. She forced her way through the defence of United and unleashed a rocket from close range.

By Frank Mavhungu Teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League will start with their activities for the new season this weekend.

The new season will commence with the preliminary matches for the Nedbank Cup KO competition.

Two preliminary-round matches will be played at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

The opening match will be between Musina United and Tubatse FC at 12:00. Musina United and Tubatse are closed books. Both are newcomers in the league. The winner of this match will play against Denilton Callies FC in their groupstage match at the Jane Furse Stadium in the Sekhukhune District next Saturday.

Vondwe XI Bullets and Emmanuel FC will follow suit soon after the game between Musina and Tubatse. This one is scheduled to start at 14:00.

Bullets and Emmanuel will use Saturday’s game to gauge their level of readiness for their debut season in the high-

er league. Bullets and Emmanuel FC were campaigning in the SAB League last season.

They got promoted to the ABC Motsepe League after their superb performance in the SAB League provincial promotional playoffs, which were staged at the Thohoyandou Stadium about three months ago. Emmanuel finished the tournament on top of the log standings after winning all four their matches, while Bullets lost only one match in the annual event.

Asked about their level of readiness for the Nedbank Cup KO competition, the head coach for XI Bullets, Mr Tsumbedzo “Zoo” Manamela, said that they had assembled the best possible squad. He reiterated the fact that they were leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for the prestigious competition. Mr Manamela’s counterpart from Emmanuel FC, Mr Tshikani Nkondo, stated that his team had what it took to lift the trophy.

VFA the only local team to celebrate

By Frank Mavhungu Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM) will not easily forget the past Saturday’s GladAfrica Championship League game against Richards Bay FC that was played at the Umhlatuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Vhadau Vha Damani, as they are affectionately called, were brutally walloped 0-4.

TTM dropped from the eighth to the 12th position on the log standings after the poor result.

Richards Bay took the game to the Tshakhuma side from the first whistle. Their opening goal came in the first minute when Sifiso Magubane tried his luck with a ground cutter from the edge of the box. The home side scored their first two goals in the first half, but it was one-way traffic even in the

second half.

The other Vhembe-based side, Black Leopards FC, are also in mourning. They suffered a 0-2 defeat at the hands of Cape Town Spurs at the Parow Park Stadium outside Cape Town on Sunday. Cape Town Spurs had their first taste of victory after sharing the spoils in four of the six matches they had played before their match against Black Leopards.

Their victory against Leopards did not affect their position on the log standings.

Cape Town Spurs are still lying in the second-last position on the log, with seven points accumulated from seven matches.

Black Leopards are in the 14th spot on the log with the same number of points.

Venda Football Academy (VFA) are still in celebratory mood after beating Uthongathi FC 1-0 at the Thohoyandou

Stadium on Saturday. VFA were awarded a penalty seven minutes into the last half and Ranga Chivaviro made no mistake from the white spot.

Platinum City Rovers, who were leading the pack before their last match, have dropped to the second spot on the log standings. This after they lost 1-4 to the University of Pretoria FC at the Absa Tuks Stadium in Pretoria.

Maindis beat Tsunami Queens 2-0 at the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium in the Free State two weeks ago before crushing Richmond United 3-2 at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday.

Try Again crowned as champions

By Kaizer Nengovhela Madombidzha Try Again were crowned as the champions of the Mazamato tournament when they beat Mabaleng Hollywood bets FC 4-2, following a penalty shoot-out after the two teams had played to a goalless draw at the Zamenkomste Grounds on Saturday.

Try Again played entertaining football from the onset, but their strikers were unlucky. Gundo Maluma, Try Again’s right flank, missed an opportunity in the 10th minute. After beating two defenders in a row, he shot aimlessly from inside the box.

The ball went far wide, much to the disappointment of the

team’s fans.

Try Again soon realised that their day at the office would be a difficult one when their leading goal scorer, Tumelo Mpfumba, fumbled at the goal finish. He received a neat pass from Sedzani Ndadza within the box and shot wide with the keeper, Mashudu “Makumba” Munengiwa, already beaten. Mpfumba committed a similar blunder a little later.

This time around, he failed to connect with Muladelo Ndou’s square pass.

Alugumi Mamugudubi, Mabaleng’ centre back, was lucky to get away with a yellow card. He obstructed Rudzani Rambau at the edge of the box in a one-on-one situation, denying Rambau what could

have been a goal. The referee did the unexpected when he flashed a yellow card at a time when most of the fans thought he would give Mamugudubi his marching orders.

Mabaleng threatened to score for the first time in the 47th minute. Phindulo Mabasa received a beautiful pass from his captain, Ralinde Manenzhe, and unleashed aimlessly from close range.

Mushubi Mushukwa of Try Again disappointed the fans in the 78th minute. He won a loose ball from the left corner and ran a few steps towards the goals before beating the keeper. He caused an upset, however, when his shot hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.
