More Women’s Month murders shock communities

Young mother hacked to death By Elmon Tshikhudo

Mayor Grace Mahosi holds the one-month-old baby boy, Ampfarisaho.

The killing of women and children in the Vhembe area has led to an outcry by community leaders and structures, calling for an end to the scourge. This follows the gruesome killing of a young mother at Tshisahulu last Wednesday. Ms Ethel Nematswerani (27) met her death at around 19:00 on Wednesday. The circumstances leading to her death are still sketchy at the moment as no one witnessed the killing. She is believed to have been surprised by an intruder while her husband, a taxi driver, was still at work. She stayed with her husband and two boys, Kharende (3) and Ampfarisaho (1 month). She is said to have suffered multiple stab wounds and, according to the police, a knife holder was found at the scene.

Her murder comes in the first week of Women’s Month and adds to the ever increasing number of women who are maimed, killed and attacked during this special month dedicated to them. Two weeks ago, the body of a woman was found in a donga in bushes in the Tshilungoma area. She had several wounds on her body. Her killer or killers have not been found. Early this year, the nine-year-old Mulweli Ramanyimi was found murdered in a donga in bushes not far from the recent spot. Elsewhere, at Matangari in the Mutale area, the community went on the rampage over the weekend, following the mysterious murder of a woman in the area. (See page 2). On Monday, Limpopo Mirror paid the family a visit at Tshisahulu. The mood was sombre, with relatives and the husband of the deceased in visi-

ble grief. Family member Ms Virginia Tshitovha said the incident had shocked the family. “We are all devastated here; we do not know what happened. What is making the situation worse is that no one in the family is working.” Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi visited the family and voiced her concern about the continuing onslaught on women and children. Accompanied by members of her management team, the local Sanco leadership and other officials from the municipality, she visited the grieving family on Monday. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu said that no one had been arrested so far. “We have opened a murder investigation and we are appealing to the public out there to assist us with information that could help us in cracking this case,” he said.
