Border jumper escapes jaws of croc A 17-year-old Mozambican border jumper escaped death by a whisker after fighting off a crocodile, which had grabbed his left leg while he was trying to cross the Limpopo River into South Africa illegally.

The victim, who is now nursing injuries in the Beit Bridge District Hospital, told Mirror that the incident occurred on Friday at around 16:00.

He was in the company of three other young men, and they were trying to cross into South Africa through the Limpopo River illegally. “I was travelling with three Zimbabweans, and when we arrived at the illegal crossing point, we got into the Limpopo River and started swimming. In the deep water, I was attacked by a huge crocodile. It grabbed my left leg and started pulling me towards the deeper end of the river. I wrestled with it and when I realised that it was overpowering me, I pulled out my knife and stabbed it in the nose. It then released me,” he said.

The other border jumpers who had accompanied him did not make efforts to rescue him and instead swam back and left the scene. They later came back in the company of officials from the local parks and

When Mirror visited the victim in hospital, he was groaning with pain in his hospital bed.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in the Limpopo River. Many border jumpers

continue to risk their lives by crossing the river and several of them have either been killed or left with scars by the deadly reptiles in the past .

Recently, an 11-year-old Beit Bridge boy was killed by a crocodile while he was swimming in Limpopo River as his friends watched helplessly.

The local police spokesperson, Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe, warned border jumpers against this

practice. “We continue to handle several cases of people, mostly border jumpers, being attacked by crocodiles while trying to cross into South Africa.

Therefore, we would like to urge people to desist from doing so as they put their lives at risk.

Border jumping is an offence and we warn those involved in this practice that they also risk being prosecuted,” said Dzirutwe.

“Stop abusing women and children” “It is high time that men start treating women and children with dignity and respect.”

This was said by Ms Mpho Mukwevho, a senior social worker at the Department of Health and Social Development. She was one of the speakers during an event to celebrate the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children, held at the Fhembeledzani Primary School sports grounds in Waterpoort a fortnight ago.

Mukwevho said the days where women used to keep quiet while they are being abused were over.

She said men always intentionally beat their spouses and

apologized the following day.

“Let us not keep quiet when you are being abused. You can always contact social workers who are always available to assist in this regard,” said Mukwevho.

She added that children were left to head families after their parents died of HIV/Aids. She stated that people who were aware of child-headed families must contact the nearest social work office for assistance.

“As much as you know that there is someone who is being abused, contact our offices or the police. Remove the bandage that is on your mouth, preventing you from speaking and saying no to abuse of women

and children,” appealed Mukwevho.

The event was organized by the Waterpoort police. Guest were being entertained by various cultural groups, which included the traditional domba dance. The South African Government runs the 16 Days of Activism Campaign to create public awareness around the negative impact of violence on women and children. It also encourages collective action against all types of abuse and its prevention in the communities.

The station commander of the Waterpoort police, Capt Samuel Moshapho, encouraged women and children to report their abusers to the police.

Botswana girls flee to Lim to abort More and more young girls from Botswana are crossing the border to have abortions at the Lephalale hospital and surrounding clinics.

This is according to the Limpopo health department’s unit manager for statistics and research population, Shoki Mokobane.

Mokobane told Northern News this week that she and her team visited several districts in Limpopo in September this year to find out how many foreign nationals were accessing health care in South Africa. When visiting the hospital in Lephalale, she found a group of seven young girls between the ages of 16 and 21, who admitted that they were there to terminate pregnancies.

Abortion is illegal in Botswana, while South Africa passed legislation in 1996 allowing it.

Mokobane said that these girls were reluctant to be interviewed, because they feared for their lives, should it be known in their home country that they had had abortions.

The CEO of the Lephalale Hospital, Kholofelo Moabelo, said that she was not aware of an influx of young girls from neighbouring countries who were seeking to abort their babies. “Yes, we do perform abortions at our hospital, but I don’t know of any foreigners entering South Africa and our hospital

specifically for abortions.” She added that it was possible that these girls registered a local address when entering the hospital.

Sapa reported this week that the study was launched in September after the department noticed an increase in the consumption of health materials in border clinics and hospitals.

The research focused on three hospitals - Phalaborwa, Musina and Lephalele - all major entry points for immigrants.

The report also indicated that the increase in foreigners accessing South African health care was stressing the government’s health budget.

Early morning shoppers and stall owners setting up stalls for the day ducked for cover when armed robbers fired shots randomly in a bid to escape after a failed robbery. In the confusion, an unlucky shopper was injured by a shot fired by one of the robbers.

The drama started when robbers who attempted to rob a nearby business were disturbed when the employees of the business raised the alarm, forcing the robbers to escape empty handed.

The incident happened at a busy shopping complex in the Thohoyandou CBD last Thursday morning.

During the commotion, a woman fainted and had to receive emergency treatment. Within minutes of the incident, the area was swarming with onlookers.

Meanwhile, angry members of the community had taken it upon themselves to chase one of the robbers. He was eventually captured and subjected to “people’s justice”. Only the timely arrival of the police saved the robber from being killed by the furious mob. Police who tried to whisk away the captured robber had their van surrounded by the angry mob, who were baying for the robber’s blood.

Eyewitnesses said the men had earlier attempted to rob a shop.

Ms Mpho Ramazhamba, who works for the targetted business,

said she was busy unpacking cloting when three men arrived and entered the shop. She said they went for the owner of the shop and said they wanted to make a laybye for something. “Out of the blue, I heard a commotion between one of the men, who was holding a firearm, and the owner, while the other two rushed to the back room,” she said.

She said she realized that something was wrong and that her employers were in danger.

“I risked being shot for the sake of my employers and ran outside shouting for help. That was when all hell broke loose. Shots were fired and some scuttled for cover, while the brave ones chased the robbers.”

Mr Reggie Nengovhela, who owns a repair shop next to the spot where the incident happened, said he was busy opening his shop when he heard noises. “I ran to the road and noticed three men approaching. They started firing shots, and I believe they were trying to scare those who had assembled at the scene,” he said.

He said two of the men ran in one direction while the other one ran in a different direction.

“After they had left, I realized that a man had been wounded in the leg and many people were gathering at the scene,” he said.

Nengovhela said he had not yet recovered from a similar incident

that happened in February next to where his shop is.

“We had to duck for cover when robbers who were robbing an airtime business fired shots wildly during the robbery. We are happy this time around that they managed to arrest one of the robbers,” he said.

Capt Mashudu Malelo, the Thohoyandou police spokesperperson, said they had arrested a 32-year-old man on a charge of attempted murder and attempted robbery. “We managed to recover a 9mm pistol with its serial numbers filed off, as well as nine rounds of ammunition,” added Malelo. He said the arrested suspect would appear in court soon.

In another, unrelated incident, police have recaptured a 31-year-old man who had earlier escaped from the Thohoyandou Magistrate Court’s holding cells.

It is alleged a police official was locking the holding cells when the suspect, who was appearing for armed robbery, forced his way out.

Police and members of the public gave chase. While being arrested, the man grabbed a police firearm and, in the ensuing struggle, a shot went off, but fortunately no one was hit.

Malelo said the man would appear in court soon, charged with an additional charge of escaping from lawful custody.

“Mortar” deceased a resident of Zim The police are still no closer to finding out who the two men were that discarred old mortar shells in Musina last week.

One of these shells exploded a man’s hands when he tried to open it, killing him instantly. He apparently wanted to sell it for scrap metal.

After the explosion, police were quick to cordon off the area. By Wednesday morning, the scene was finally cleared.

The remaining mortar shells were destroyed by the police.

Local couple dies in fire

She was speaking during her 50th birthday celebration, which she celebrated with intellectually impaired children at Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School last Friday.

A manager of mental helalth care at Elim Hospital, Mrs Rachael Ramovha, said that people often took advantage of intellectually impaired people and abused them.

A shocking and gruesome incident happened at Tsianda-Tshiitwani village outside Levubu where a couple died in a fire last Thursday morning. Long-time sweethearts Ms Mulatedzi Mulaudzi (32) and Mr Tshifhiwa Netshituni (37) are believed to have been asleep when the fire broke out.

Residents from the area found it hard to accept that the couple had perished in the fire. The two people had been staying together in the shack for a very long time.

He said that the fire broke out shortly after 02:00. “We received a call that there was a shack burning and when we arrived at the scene, we found that there were two people who had burned (to death),” he said. Jail time for notorious burglars Three Beit Bridge men who had broken into a local school computer laboratory and stolen a consignment of computers worth R24 000 will spend several years in jail.

The computers were donated to the Vhembe High School in 2007. Protégé Kwangwari (22) of Dulibadzimu Township, who is believed to be the leader of the syndicate, was jailed for six years, while the other two accused, Clearance Sibanda (26) and Benjamin Jaricha (57), a local taxi driver, were jailed for five years each.

charges of unlawful entry and theft, but were convicted by local magistrate Mr Carrington Karidzagundi, due to overwhelming evidence.

It was testified that on September 25, the three went to Vhembe High School, armed with a bolt cutter and an iron bar. They gained entry into the computer laboratory after destroying the door, using the tools, and stole eight computers. They also broke into the school’s administration block, where they stole an empty cash box before they disappeared into the bushes.

Mukhola said that the cause of fire was still not known, adding that the bodies of the two had been taken for forensic investigation. He also warned residents to refrain from pointing fingers and spreading rumours in the village about the incident. According to Mukhola, the police must be given time to investigate the incident and residents must not interfere.

“Those who know what might have happened must just furnish the police with information in this regard,” appealed Mukhola.

Khoroni donates three wheelchairs

Tshakhuma ready to fight rise in crime

Khoroni Hotel is not just a lavish hotel when it comes to accommodation and entertainment, but also has staff with soft, caring hearts. This was proven last Friday when Khoroni donated wheelchairs to three intellectually impaired children at TshilwavhusikuRazwimisani Special School.

The hotel also donated Bosch machinery to use in the woodcraft training department.

According to Ms Mashudu Muthuli, the public relations officer, the donation was part of the hotel’s social responsibility programme. “We always invest back into the community that we do our business in,” she said.

The residents of Tshakhuma say that they are fed-up with the increase in crime in the area.

This comes after a group of gangsters has been terrorising members of the community, assaulting them, breaking into their houses and taking their belongings by force. The police have been looking for their alleged leader, Mabidi Ligaraba.

The man is believed to be dangerous and whoever sees him is requested to contact the police.

During an urgent meeting at the Tshakhuma Tribal Office last Saturday, residents threatened to take the law into their own hands whenever they see Ligaraba.

It is believed that the group of gangsters is comprised of nine men from Muledane, Tshakhuma, and the Tshisahulu villages. Several cases of assault, housebreaking and rape have been opened at Levubu against the men. Other people have been wounded but are afraid to open cases.

During the meeting, residents said that they had decided to join the war against crime, in the sense that whoever is seen engaging in criminal activities in the area will be dealt with. They added that Ligaraba and his gang would be expelled from the village. "We are ready to fight crime in our community. We are the ones who can create a crimefree environment in the community we live in," said the chairperson for the South African Civic Organisation, Mr Nndwakhulu Davhula.

Traditional wedding for local royal princess The royal Rammbuda family, which belongs to the Singo clan, one of the prominent Vhavenda clans in Vhembe, is known for doing things in a special and different way.

They are known for being industrious and for being the torchbearers in bringing development in the former Venda area.

When their daughter, Tshililo, tied the knot with Thembelani Dondolo at the weekend, it was a traditional affair.

The traditional wedding, held at the Thohoyandou Town Hall, was a mixture of two different cultures: Venda and Xhosa.

The wedding, which was hailed by many as Vhembe’s wedding of the year, saw many prominent people attending. Among them were many chiefs from Vhembe and prominent figures from the

Eastern Cape, including Dali Mpofu, who was part of the inlaws’ entourage.

In true Venda royal tradition, the girls, who included white maidens who are friends of Tshililo, emerged clad in Venda traditional attire long after the stipulated time from the wedding house, concealed in blankets.

There was the sound of Venda mouth organs doing the Tshikona dance, a Venda royal dance which accompanies the royals and done during important events.

At the hall, the in-laws were treated to the grueling task of identifying the bride, who was still concealed in a blanket. On two occasions they failed to locate the bride and they were made to pay a fine, as per tradition. There was a loud applause from the guests when they finally

located her and unveiled her for all to see.

Vho Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, one of the most senior and influential traditional leaders in Vhembe, commended the Rammbuda family for following tradition. He said most marriages did not last because people tended to forget the old ways of doing things. “We are here to pay our dues as traditional leaders. I am honoured because Rammbuda did the right thing by coming to the palace personally to invite me,” added Mphaphuli.

He said the marriage would strengthen the ties between the Xhosas and Vendas as they will from now on visit each other.

The second leg of the wedding was held on Monday at one of Polokwane’s top hotels.

Tiyani’s pre-schoolers celebrate Pupils from Tiyani’s pre-school “graduated” during a ceremony at Tiyani Village last Friday. They will continue their primary education phase as Grade Rs next year.

Addressing the community, Chief Elias Shondlani thanked the parents for supporting their children through their pre-school days.

“We know it was a difficult year financially. When these children start at primary level next year, keep up the good work. Use their money wisely,” he said.

A member of the school governing body, Mr Norman Khosa, said that it was by grace and hard work that these children got to “graduate” at the end of the year. “We have dif-

ficulties in our pre-school, but we worked together with the principal.

Today marks the official end of this year’s programme and the departure of our children to the primary phase next year,” said Khosa.

The pupils recited the poems that they were taught throughout the year.

The principal, Miss Gladys Mabunda, could express her appreciation to her colleagues for their support throughout the year.

“We never received money from the government this year and we relied on the children’s payments. To the parents who cooperated throughout the year in making payments for their children: thank you, we relied on it,” said Mabunda.

Univen publishes its first health journal In 2010, the School of Health Science at the University of Venda commenced with deliberations and actions to publish evidence of its research and publication activities.

These efforts were compiled by staff members in the four departments into a formal publication.

In 2010, the school approached the African Journal for Physical Health Education, Recreation and Dance (AJPHERD) to publish the research and presentations as

a special edition or supplement of the journal. The first of its kind, the journal was launched on Wednesday during a special ceremony at the university’s senate chamber.

Univen’s vice-chancellor and principal, Prof Peter Mbati, officiated at the launch and also autographed some of the copies during the event. The university submitted 42 articles and 36 were accepted for publication in AJPHERD. Mbati said he was quite impressed by the amount of re-

search work undertaken by the School of Health Sciences. This year alone, 36 articles from staff members and students were published in accredited journals.

“The articles covered focus on HIV/Aids, sexual reproductive health, public health, nutritional practices, anthropometry, sport, fitness and training, paralympic sports, programme and programme evaluation and communication technologies (ICT).

These are wonderful achievements and I commend you highly,” said Prof Mbati.

Local businesses donate gifts for children In 2002, some 300 men and women from Tshakhuma decided to close ranks and established what is today known as the Tshakhuma Orphans and Vulnerable Children Project.

The centre held its Christmas party at Tshakhuma two weeks ago.

A well-known local spiritual leader, Pastor FE Gumani, stated that the best way to honour the Lord was to take care of the orphans and vulnerable children. She stressed the fact that the youth are the future of the country.

According to her, raising a

child is a joint venture involving parents, neighbours, civic structures and the police. “It takes the whole village to raise a child,” she said. She appealed to the children to forget about their orphanage and concentrate on their studies.

A local traditional leader, acting chief NE Madzivhandila, expressed appreciation for the work done by the volunteer women at the project.

He also appealed to businesspeople to support the project.

According to one of the founder members of the project, Mrs Shumani Ndou, there are only

11 women left who look after 85 childrenwho are enrolled at the drop-in centre. Ndou revealed that the Thohoyandou outlet for KFC had donated clothing to the centre as a Christmas gift for the children.

She appealed to other businesspeople to follow suit, saying even orphans and vulnerable children had the right to have a merry Christmas.

Several businesses, including Tshakhuma Spar, Makhado Pick ‘n Pay, Tshikhudini Butchery and Tshakhuma Funeral Services, contributed towards the success of Saturday’s event.

The Kharigude Group at Tshakhuma held their year-end party on Wednesday two weeks ago. The group is comprised of stall owners at the Tshakhuma Market. They said that they had been working together for a long time and became a big family. The function was held at the Tshakhuma market. The women said they formed the Kharigude, a literacy group, after realizing that everyone needs education today. Most of them did not have the chance to go to school during their time.

Mufulwi bids farewell to legend One day, when the history of women who contributed to the rural communities of Mutale by encouraging pupils to take education seriously is documented, the name Constance Tshimangadzo Nemandalale will appear in a special chapter.

In the early 70s, she was the first woman to work as a qualified teacher in her village of Mufulwi. On Friday, Ms Tshimangadzo Constance Nemandalale (65), principal of Mufulwi Primary School near Matavhela in Mutale, bade farewell to the teaching profession after working as a professional teacher for

the past 42 years.

She is regarded as the pioneer of rural education upliftment in villages such as Mufulwi, Ngalavhani and Matavhela in Mutale.

Members of the communities, her teachers, relatives and former pupils organised a big function to bid her farewell as she is going on pension. The circuit manager of the Tshilamba area, Mr Takalani Makakavhale, urged principals and teachers to follow in Ms Nemandalale’s footsteps in providing quality education to the young generation. Makakavhale said Ms Nemandalale’s work cannot be

replaced. Her departure from the education fraternity will leave a gap as she used her teaching experience to mentor and coach pupils and teachers. One of the pupils taught by Nemandalale, who is now a school teacher, Mr Avhampfuni Ugoda, expressed appreciation for the good work Ms Nemandalale had done to bring education to the rural communities. “She has been a pillar of strength. She made us what we are today and she led us to better education. She taught us to be responsible, stand on our own and regard education as the best weapon to survive,” said Ugoda.

Man jailed for torching neighbour’s home A 26-year-old jilted Zimbabwean man from Musekwa village outside Beit Bridge allegedly torched the bedroom hut in which his estranged girlfriend and her two children, aged six and two, were sleeping, resulting in the death of the two minors.

The woman, however, escaped unhurt. The local police spokesperson, A/Insp Emmanuel Mahoko, said the incident occurred last Friday night at Musekwa village. The two children killed in the fire are Pretty Kangausaru (6) and her stepbrother, Nigel Hungwe (2). “The two year-old boy was burnt beyond recognition, while his six-year-old sister sustained severe burns and died on admission to hospital. Their mother, Ms Lydia Mangena, es-

caped unhurt,” he said. Mahoko said police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, Desire Dhewa from the same village, who went into hiding after the incident. He said that on the day of the incident, the suspect and complainant had an argument , resulting in the two’s affair going sour. The man later visited the woman’s homestead during the night, intending to re-engage her. “When he arrived at the Mangena homestead at about 22:00, she had retired to bed, together with her two children.

Dhewa proceeded to her bedroom hut and knocked on the door, but the woman refused to open the door and the suspect threatened to burn down the hut. He also attempted to open the locked door forcibly,” Mahoko said.

On sensing danger, Mangena managed to get out of the hut through the window, leaving behind her two children, who were fast asleep. “When she got out of the hut and realised that the roof was on fire, she screamed for help and the suspect chased after her, but she managed to escape,” said Mahoko. Some villagers who heard the screams for help later rushed to the scene and when they arrived at the homestead, one of the victims had already died. They managed to rescue his sister, who had sustained severe burns. She died later.

Mahoko said the police were now appealing to local community members to assist with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect, who was still at large.

Iyarunga aim high

Waterval’s councillors battle to get answers

Iyarunga FC aim to suprise Tshiozwi Dynamos in the semi-final of the Tornado Mulaudzi Soccer Challenge at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

Iyarunga beat Madodonga Limpopo Professionals 1-0 in the quarterfinal last week. The match between Dynamos and Iyarunga will start at 13:00.

Madombidzha Arsenal will play against Muraleni United in the first match of the day, starting at 10:30. The winner between the two will meet Maisa Rainbow at 15:00.

Last week, Rainbow was on target when they beat Mpheni Home Defenders 5-4.

The captain of Dynamos, Mashudu Mafunisa, said that they were going to win the match and avenge the two defeats they had suffered at the hands of Iyarunga this season. “This time we are going all out to win the trophy,” said Mafunisa.

The manager of Iyarunga, Funny Thoga, said his side was ready for any team and that history would repeat itself on Sunday.

The champions of the tournament will receive R5 000, a floating trophy and gold medals.

The Waterval community’s struggle to secure proper service delivery is far from over and, much to the frustration of the local people, the representatives from the various departments failed to attend a meeting last week to discuss the problems.

The councillors for the Waterval region, which falls under the auspices of the Makhado Municipality, convened a meeting on 29 November at 10:00, where they were to meet with delegates from the Department of Roads and Transport and the Vhembe District Municipality.

This followed after the three parties first met on 22 November, when it was agreed that during the next meeting the water affairs section and roads and transport would bring written reports with regard to their service delivery duties for the communities concerned. As recorded in the previous meeting’s minutes, the water affairs section was required to go back to assess the extent of dysfunctional boreholes in the 18 regions which fall under the Waterval region. They were also requested to provide the gathering of councillors with a comprehensive written report on what the office’s move would be to see to it that residents eventually received water.

Waterval region’s acting administrator for the Makhado Municipality, Mr SS Baloyi, confirmed during the meeting that Kgosana had been served with at least three invitation letters. She refused to accept them, saying that the invitation should have been addressed to her seniors in Vhembe. “Kgosana said she would still attend the meeting, even though she didn’t accept the invitation letter,” reported Baloyi during the meeting.

When contacted to explain her absence from the meeting, Kgosana ignored calls from theLimpopo Mirror. The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said he was aware of the 29 November meeting and that a representative from his office was going to attend. “I contacted Ms Leah myself,” he said. “She said she was in the meeting [of the 29nd of November]. That’s the information she gave me today (30 November).”

Service delivery convener and the person who chaired the meeting Cllr Sipho Masuka said people like Leah were not fit to be in office because they thought they could lie and get away with it. “The community needs water more than anything else,” Masuka said. “It takes some six years for a borehole machine to

be fixed, and you tell me if there’s sense to that. People buy a 20 litre drum of water, paying R2 and R3, from their neighbours. Most of these people cannot even afford a loaf of bread.”

In the meantime, the service support manager for the department of Roads and Transport, Maureen Ramudzuli, agreed that her department would undertake to fix “main roads” which were left impaired by recent rains whilst the Waterval regional office for the Makhado Municipality would take full responsibility for ward roads. “I will submit a request for a second TLB grader to speed up the project,” Ramudzuli said. “You must also remember that, in the previous meeting, the Waterval regional office had promised to request two trucks from the Makhado Municipality for assistance in the process of roads reparation, since there’s a scarcity of trucks from our side.”

The technical director at the Makhado Municipality, Mr T Ralulimi, was supposed to come to the meeting to answer to the issues of the requested trucks as well as the roads construction departments’ programme in and around the Waterval region. Mr Ralulimi, however, only arrived at the venue at 14:19, long after the actual meeting was declared over. He refused to give any comments, saying that he did not speak to the media.

Bold “16-days” statement by AFM’s youth In support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, the children’s department of the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) in South Africa has added its voice against the atrocities against women and children.

On Saturday, more than a thousand Sunday school children in their academic gowns took to the streets of Shayandima. Led by the leadership of the church, which included the national director of children’s ministry, Adv Sam Tshabalala, Zoutpansberg regional chairperson of the AFM, Dr Mackson

Maanzwane and other senior church officials, they marched from P & L Hardware through the streets of Shayandima to the local satellite police station.

The leadership handed over a memorandum highlighting the plight of women and children. Adv Tshabalala told those gathered that they were there to make a statement against the continued violence perpetuated against children and particularly the girlchild. “As one of the largest pentecostal churches in South Africa, we have realised the value of children in our society.

We are building a future church, future leaders who should grow up respecting their parents and living within the perfect moral fibre,” he added.

He said children were entitled to the best in life, which included better education and that they live in peace and joy. He said that a nation that did not care for its children was doomed. He encouraged parents to discuss the dangers of diseases such as HIV/Aids and obesity.

He said the 16 days should be extended to weeks, months and years and eventually become the African way of life.

Early Christmas gift for Shooting Stars

Mukumbani Shooting Stars, one of the oldest soccer teams at Mukumbani, received an early Christmas gift when they were handed a soccer kit.

The kit, a generous donation from Vho Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, one of the most senior Vhavenda traditional leaders, brought much joy and encouragement to the impoverished team.

In handing over the kit, Tshivhase, who heads the Transport Portfolio in the Limpopo Legislature, said he was motivated by the commitment shown by the team’s players and management. I know this area has no entertainment. The youth do not have anything meaningful to do and many of them end up indulging in illicit substances like drugs and alcohol. Tshivhase, who is very passionate about development and is always seeking ways to uplift his community, said he was also told that the players did not have soccer boots.

“I know our playing pitch is not up to standard. One cannot play barefoot, so we will soon also give them soccer boots,” he said. He said sport is the right catalyst to keep people busy which will, at the end, lead to healthy bodies. We just hope that in a few years' time, we will see stars emerging from this village who will go out and represent us at higher level.

"There is a lot of talent here which is just waiting to be nurtured,” he said.

Mpho Demana, the assistant coach of the club said the uniform is a blessing and a motivation to the club. “We are an impoverished team with virtually no resources at all. We are very grateful for the support we are receiving from our traditional leader.

The kit will motivate us a lot and will see us moving up the log ladder,” he said. He said the donation had posed a great challenge to the team as they had to prove to their chief that they were the best.

“From now on, we have to double our efforts. We have to prove to all that the kit is money well spent and an investment in the community,” he said.

He appealed to businesspeople to assist them as they do not have the finances to honour away matches and the payment of referees.

The function was held on 3 December in the crèche’s hall on a windy morning and lasted for seven hours!

"Today your children are graduating because you decided not to throw them in the veld or into rubbish bins," she added. "You must know that in taking good care of the little ones, you're creating a good future for us all."

Moshatane said leaving small children alone when you go out for work is never safe. Instead, parents must use the child's grant money to take him or her to a crèche, where the child will be safe. In very strong terms she emphasised the importance of healthy child-upbringing by citing situations where parents are not even ashamed to quarrel before their children. She also condemned the behaviour of parents who shout at children when they should speak to them soberly. "Speak with them and they will hear you," she said.

"Shouting at your child will only frustrate him or her."

During the function, each young graduate was given enough

time to recite some songs and limericks they had learnt during their time in the crèche. Their voices sounded good and were full of happiness and joy of life.

Lufuno crèche accommodates children aged between 0 and 5 years. Ramalivha also said that there were only 34 graduates for the 2010 graduation out of the 119 children who were registered with them. Yet Lufuno Crèche and Pre-School managed to produce at least 79 graduates for this year, out of 210 children. The numbers of registered children and graduating children have doubled so far. "We are happy once more to notice that more and more parents believe in our services," she added.

Emotional mother describes hard times An emotional mother of a wheelchair-bound girl narrated the untold hardships and bad luck that had befallen her family. This was during an event when her daughter received two new wheelchairs from a caring Thohoyandoubased business.

Funanani Matsenene (18) of Itsani-Tshisahulu, a pupil at Tshisahulu Full Service School, received two spacious wheelchairs from the Thohoyandou branch of a well-known national clothing store, Express Stores.

Before her windfall, Funanani had to leave her wheelchair at school, as she did not have money to transport her wheelchair to and from school.

Her mother, Virginia Matsenene, was close to tears when she described the pains she had gone through because of her dis-

abled daughter. Funanani, who is in Grade 4, nearly jumped out of her old wheelchair in joy.

“This gesture is a Godsend. I have been going up and down, engaging the Department of Health to get a wheelchair, but to no avail,” she said.

She said her daughter could not bring her wheelchair back home as she could not afford money to transport it and that meant that she had to have one at school and the other at home.

“We are very poor. My husband used to work as a bus driver, but a mysterious illness disabled him and he cannot walk as I speak now.” To add insult to injury, the girl’s grant was cut from April 2011 and when it was reinstated, she was not paid the arrears.

“We are struggling to make ends meet,” she said. She said

what happened was the mercy of God towards the impoverished family.

“I thank Express Store Thohoyandou and especially the manager, Mr Sonnyboy Lekganyane, who uplifted the family from this mire of poverty,”she said.

The principal of the school, Mr Victor Murovhi, was equally excited. “The school is very humbled by this donation. It is through such partnerships that this school will go from strength to strength,” he said.

Mr Sunnyboy Lekganyane of Thohoyandou Express Store said they were touched when they learnt of the grl’s plight.

“The family’s story is heartbreaking. The condition the girl found herself in needed immediate intervention and that was when we came in,” he said.

The SAB League match between Mphego Real Rovers and United Artists, which was played at the Mphego grounds on Sunday, ended in chaqos. The score was 2-2, and with 10 minutes to go, referee Mphireni Mphephu blew the final whistle.

It was evident from the onset that something unusual would happen. A fan of Real Ro­vers stormed onto the pitch, forcing the referee to stop the game for a while. The captain of Rovers persuaded the man to leave the pitch and the game continued as if nothing had happened.

Ramavhoya resident with growth on face needs help The life of Lufuno Tshisimba (30) of Ramavhoya in the Nzhelele area came to a dramatic halt in 2006, when a strange growth at the left of his head started to deform his face.

The growth is causing him pain and he cannot sleep at night. He said he is being mocked by fellow community members and they call him names because of the growth in his face. The lump on Lufuno’s face started in 2002 as a small pimple, but gradually grew bigger and bigger.

“Doctors cannot tell me exactly what is wrong,” he said.

“I cannot afford expensive medical attention.” He adds that he has tried everything to have the growth healed, but without success. “I have consulted traditional healers, men of the cloth and spiritual healers, but none of them could cure me. I seriously believe this is the work of the evil people, who want to see me suffer. I want to be healed and enjoy the precious gift of

New hit single album for reggae artist Tshidino Ndou If you are a lover of reggae music, make sure you get Tshidino Ndou’s new single, Ri Khou Phusha Life.

With this new offering, Tshidino indicates that he sings what his fans like. In terms of sound, he seems to have found his own style. He said his passion for reggae was inspired by the sound of Lucky Dube and Colbert Mukwevho.

Born in Tshakhuma, Tshidino is one of the few talented musicians who are making names for themselves in the music industry. Reggae is one music genre that has fast become popular, especially in Venda.

The hit track, Ri khou phusha Life, has some elements of gospel, but Tshidino remains loyal to

the reggae genre. The single is accompanied by other three other tracks, U luga, Lufuno Lwanu and A ni tshithu.

Tshidino says he is a proud Venda musician who enjoys singing in his home language, Tshivenda.

Phungo All Stars donate points to Spurs In their Vodacom Promotional League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday, Phungo All Stars lost 1-2 to Giyani Hotspurs.

It was clear from the onset that Hotspurs needed nothing less than a convincing victory. Their midfielders, Ntoanano Maluleke, Vincent Mabunda and Javel Nd-

lovu, created dangerous moves on a continuous basis. The visitors from Giyani were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box in the 24th minute. Vincent Mabunda gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box. Phungo All Stars lost shape in the middle of the park shortly after the goal.

Hotspurs capitalised on the setback and continued to enjoy ball possession. They were duly rewarded for their endless efforts when their overlapping midfielder, Senior Maluleke, blasted in a rocket, after the Stars’ keeper, Reuben Mbedzi, missed the ball. Vincent Mabunda of Hotspurs was reprimanded with a card for advancing to the opponents’ half before the referee blew the whistle to restart the game after the goal.

Phungo’s solitary goal came in the 39th minute. Ivan Mahangwahaya beat the keeper with a volley.

All Stars replaced Mandisi Ngubane, Phumudzo Ramanyo and Humbulani Matsa with Nkhumeleni Tondani, Hulisani Mathugana and Ntshani Ndzalama respectively earlier in the last half.

New Mates and Benny’s Care in draw Benny’s Care Soccer Academy held Maelula New Mates to a 1-all draw in their Safa SAB match played at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

Mates was the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in their putting more pressure on the defence of Benny’s for the better part of the match. They missed a golden opportunity in the 10th minute, when the veteran player of Mates, Mushe Matibe, shot wide from the penalty area. Realising that their midfield was weary, the technical department of the Maelula lads introduced Rotshidzwa Luvhengo for Ndivhuwo Nesthiozwi.

The second half was characterised by dangerous play from the Mates players. In an attempt to calm the situation, the referee flashed some yellow cards in quick succession. Lucious Matibe and Mulalo Munzhedzi were booked for the application of dirty tricks and dangerous play. Rotshidzwa Luvhengo of Mates dribbled past three defenders in a row before beating the keeper, Trence Mphothi. After the goal, Bennys started to chance the action as Mates enRotshidzwa Luvhengo controls the header and joyed ball possession. As if they were hypnotized, Loldy Davhana waits for the ball. the players of the local team were more spectators than players throughout the match. Billy Moyo of Benny’s could not make the grade, as the opponents used him as their “freeway”.

Benny’s later equalised through Theo Phophi, who scored after he received a beautiful pass from Lesedi Kapinga. The Mates’ central back, Alucious Matibe, and Mulalo Mudzhedzi were reprimanded with cards for rough tackling and wasting time respectively. Benny’s introduced Thendo Sidzele and Andani Nelalili for Loldy Davhana and Clement Mapahaba, but this did not have any influence on the outcome of the match. The draw was a fair result for the evenly contested match.

Kingston Nkhatha tried his luck, but Greg Etafia executed a brilliant save, much to the Leopards fans’ disappointment.

Black Leopards in dire straits

Although Black Leopards were the first to score, they finally suffered a 1-4 defeat at the hands of Moroka Swallows in their Absa Premiership League match at the Dobsonville Stadium last Saturday evening.

Leopards could have scored four goals in the first half, but their strikers were unlucky. Their Nigerian international, Joshua Ojabe, missed a

sitter two minutes into the game. He received a beautiful pass from Thabo Mongalo and shot wide from inside the box.

Leopards’ goal came in the eighth minute.

Lidoda Duvha continued to control the proceedings after the goal.
