Angry community members, who were protesting outside court that the suspect should not be granted bail. The message is clear on the placards.

Lone widow stabbed to death By Elmon Tshikhudo

At a time when organisations are vigorously campaigning for an end to violence against women and children, women out there are still facing abuse and some are being killed violently on a daily basis. One such victim is Elisa Shonisani of Maraxwe outside Thohoyandou. Shonisani (49), a mother of five, who stayed alone, met her untimely and vicious death probably in the early hours of last Saturday. Details of the events leading to her death are still sketchy as she was alone at the time of her death. It was, however, confirmed that she was stabbed several times all over her body. News of her death sent shockwaves to the closely knit community of Maraxwe, who vowed that they would not rest until the perpetrator was safely behind bars. They said they would work in conjunction with the police in tracing the killer, so that he could be stopped in his tracks before killing and maiming other women in the village. On Monday, community members, including members of the Maraxwe Women’s Club, of which the deceased had been a member,

heard of the arrest of the suspected killer. They quickly arranged for transport to the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court, where the suspect was scheduled to appear. “We are here to make a statement. We are here to tell the courts that they should not grant bail to the suspect. The man arrested for the murder is known in the community and what we know is that he is a former prisoner, who was released on parole. He is violent and we want him locked in prison for the rest of his life,” said Mavis Mafinya, the chairperson of Maraxwe Women’s Club. She said the death of one of their members left them greatly saddened as the deceased was a dedicated member. “The whole community is crying; some of us did not even go to work today. We will be by the family’s side until our colleague is buried. We will not keep quiet and will tell the justice system that they are soft on criminals, because they commit serious crimes and the next day they are released,” she added. She stated that they would continue monitoring the case until it was finalised. Mutale police spokesperson W/O Tshilidzi Nyambeni said that they had arrested a 33-year-old man, Tshilidzi Masindi, in connection with the murder. He appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s

Court and was not granted bail. He is to appear in court again on 23 January next year. Mashudu Shonisani, the deceased’s eldest son, said the death of their mother had left a big void in the family. “Our mother was everything to us. After our father passed away in 2008. She did not give up but took over as the parent and singlehandedly made sure that we all got the best as her children, making sure that all of us got education and food.” He added that the family was still in shock and failing to handle the situation. He said the family had put everything in the hands of the law. “Whoever is responsible for our mother’s death should rot in jail. The law should show that there is still justice in this country,” he added. “The fact that she was helpless and could not have resisted makes us feel bad that she was brutally killed. We also need to know the reason behind her death as, so far, nobody seems to know what actually happened,” he said. Ms Shonisani will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at the local graveyard.
