CONGRATULATIONS
MCINTYRE RANCHING
A century of Hereford cattle at the McIntyre Ranch was recognized with an award from the Canadian Hereford Association at the British Breeds Rancher Calf Sale at Balog Auction in October.
The southern Alberta ranch was started in 1894 by William McIntyre, his son Billy ran the ranch for his father and became a member of the Canadian Hereford Association in 1914. In 1921 the herd letters “MCI” were registerd with the CHA.
Billy passed away in 1947 and Ralph Thrall purchased the McIntyre Ranch the following year. It remains in the care of the Thrall family to this day.
A cross-breeding program was started in 1987 with the introduction of Red Angus into the herd. Today, the ranch runs both purebred Hereford and Red Angus herds in addition to a cross-bred commercial herd with the “hearty” Hereford acting as the mainstay of their crossbred program.
Given the ranch location in southern Alberta, they don’t see that changing anytime soon!
CHA President Nels Nixdorff presented the award to McIntyre Ranch representatives Kimberly Widmer and Johnny Badura.
THANK YOU
Albert Rimke presented his thanks to outgoing CHA President Nels Nixdorff. Nels was presented with a CHA jacket to recognize the time and effort he devoted to the CHA the past two years.
The CHA would also like to recognize the contributions of outgoing CHA Directors Albert Rimke, Rob Flack and Phillip Thorne.
New to the board will be David Alward representing the Maritimes, Janelle Gulka from Manitoba. Heather Ribey from Ontario will take over the term for Rob Flack.

Canadian Hereford Association President's Message
BY NELS NIXDORFF President of the Canadian Hereford AssociationWe had a beautiful September and October in our area but then winter hit with a vengeance with lots of snow and cold temperatures just as our outfit and our neighbors rounded up our cows and weaned calves. I was reminded how nice it is to work with Hereford and Hereford cross cattle, even in adverse conditions. It is truly one of our breed’s greatest attributes that they are docile and seem to want to work with you, not against you!
I was privileged to travel with Michael Latimer, our new executive director to the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. It was my first visit to the Royal and it was a great National Show in a fantastic facility with lots of top-quality Hereford cattle. We had many great conversations in the barns, and I appreciated the warm hospitality that we received.
ultrasound data and all other information. We as a breed need as much hard information as possible to make sure that our EPD’s are TRULY ACCURATE. These measurements help us to improve our breed and help us identify the individuals that will improve our herds.
This will be my last President’s message as my term as President has come to an end. It has been a great privilege for me to work with all the directors from across the country and I am very proud of the work that we have done in creating and implementing our new breed strategy.
We have experienced some trying times getting through Covid and finding a new executive director. I realized in these endeavors that we have a great staff that is very capable and very willing. We have a great breed with a great future ahead of us, and I feel very lucky to be a part of the Hereford fraternity.
Our board is working diligently to continue pushing forward the implementation of our breed strategy.
Michael has been a very quick study and understands our goals and is spearheading these efforts.
He has stepped into the job very easily and has a very good understanding of how to run the office and the association.
As a breed we have many ways to improve our cattle and it is important as breeders to use these tools. It is of the utmost importance that we continue submitting our birth weights, weaning weights, yearling weights, cow weights,
All the best to you and all your family. I hope to see you down the road.
We as a breed need as much hard information as possible to make sure that our EPD’s are TRULY ACCURATE.

Hereford horizons
Happy New Year!
We look forward to 2023 with a sense of cautious optimism. The current economic climate and continued drought in some areas is cause for concern as is the continued record-breaking numbers of cull cow sales. Strong calf prices have been offset by incremental increases in production costs and it is impossible to put a positive spin on that! Moving forward it seems there should soon be a shortage of calves and that will maintain some stability in calf prices. The cost effectiveness of Hereford bulls and females arguably provide the best value in the entire industry for producers looking to maximize profit in difficult times. Acknowledged Hereford feed efficiency addresses the most significant cost of production and the benefits of the F1 through docility, fertility and overall lifetime production have been proven to increase revenue per cow. These are all messages we need to share. Our Better Your Beef strategy is predicated on communication. We need to get our message out to the membership and to the wider audience of the Canadian cattle
industry. It is a role we take very seriously at the CHA and at the Canadian Hereford Digest, getting the message out about the strengths of our breed and its place in the cattle industry is paramount. Our CHA communications team is focused on action and has tasked itself with messaging that is congruent with the six pillars of the strategic plan. Taking advantage of all avenues of communication will be key to the success of these initiatives. The Canadian Hereford Digest as the official voice of
BY JUDY FINSETH Managing Editorthe Canadian Hereford Association will continue to serve the needs of breeders as a forum for marketing cattle but will provide editorial content that highlights the great things we offer as a breed as well as information that enables our readers to stay current with the science and news that forms the core of this business of breeding Herefords. As a staff we are pleased to welcome Communications Specialist Emma Cross to our team. Emma’s main role will be to develop a social media strategy that sees consistent messaging across all our social media channels. Creativity and on point messaging will increase the presence of Canadian Hereford and we look forward to Emma tracking the measurable gains we make on the social media front.
As an enthusiastic young Hereford breeder growing her own herd, Emma is keenly aware of the challenges facing the next generation of Hereford breeders. We talk about sustainability and fostering the skill set needed to move from the junior level to active breeder status. It is a big leap with unique challenges surrounding succession planning on multigeneration operations and colossal challenges for young breeders striking out on their own. As an association we also recognize the difficulty of taking breeding programs to a new level, the ability to expand a customer base so the ability to market more bulls and females negates the necessity of off-farm income. Supporting young Hereford breeders is a key plank in the strategic plan and the CHA is committed to action on this front.
Better Your Beef isn’t just a catchy slogan, it is a call to action for the CHA, provincial associations and breeders to continue improving and growing our breed and to make sure everyone in the cattle industry hears that consistent message!

FEATURE STORY
FAMILY & PROGRESS
BY COURTNEY LOMHEIM Contributing WriterNestled near the Chilcotin River, you will find the heritage Chilco Ranch. Located one hour southwest of Williams Lake, British Columbia it is rich with history that plays to the sentiments of the cattlemen who saw a land of opportunity and called it home. Today the Chilco Ranch is focused on the importance of traditions, family and a vision of the future.
Dean and Lorraine Miller (Miller Ranches Ltd) purchased the Chilco Ranch in 1992 and today 4 generations call the ranch home, living just a stone’s throw from each other.
Dean and Lorraine are still active on the Ranch and a high priority is put on family involvement. Dean at 84 years young, can still be found attending the “morning meetings” or throwing a loop in the branding trap.
Janet Miller is Dean & Lorraine’s daughter. A nurse by trade she is active on
Low maintenance Hereford cows form the core of the breeding program on this BC ranch
the ranch whether astride a horse or keeping the crew well fed. Unofficially titled as “Camp Cook” Janet’s beautiful home plays host to the delicious food enjoyed by the crew at weaning and pregnancy check time.
Ranch Manager, Jordan Grier (Janet’s son) and wife Crystal share roles on the ranch outside of being parents to children: Connor and Taylor. They both have a passion for training nice horses, as horses play a very important role on the ranch.
Connor and Taylor are 4 th generation on the ranch. Connor is in his second year with a 4-H beef project and Taylor is a 4-H Clover Bud until she is old enough to officially join.
Justin Grier (Janet’s son) lends his skills as a mechanic, along with being the ranch’s “jack of all trades”. Justin’s girlfriend Meghan Cave also offers a hand on the ranch outside of her job as a Veterinarian in Williams Lake.
The Chilcotin is the ideal place to raise cattle with its hard native grass, mild weather and on some ranches “floating meadows.” The Chilco Ranch does not have any of these meadows but for the ranches that do they offer year-round green grass to graze under the snow.
Mild weather in the Chilcotin also brings dry conditions and drought potential. Drought has been a factor in past years making the area vulnerable to devastating fires. In 2017 the ranch was wiped out by fire with the main ranch buildings and some equipment being saved, fortunately no livestock were lost. The dry weather brings on the use of irrigation for around 400 acres of hay and crop land. A gravity fed system was implemented that spans nearly 30 km start to finish. The Ranch works in conjunction with Ducks Unlimited on a water project to utilize that water for irrigation and to maintain riparian areas on the grasslands.
“
Hereford is the ‘go to’ breed on the Chilco Ranch. Their good disposition, great maternal ability and ability to perform in the Chilcotin, is unmatched.”
This relationship brings a balance between sustainable cattle production and maintaining the ecosystem to preserve it for years to come.
Jordan is the President of the Cariboo Cattlemen’s Association. This association brings together cattle producers from the central interior of British Columbia. Jordan saw the position as a chance to empower cattlemen, young and old, not only in the Cariboo, but all-over British Columbia. Cattle are not in the forefront within the province compared to Alberta and that plays a role in how the future lays out for the industry. The progressive views of the Cariboo Cattleman’s Association aids in an easier path forward but is not without roadblocks. Jordan notes the aging demographic of cattlemen requires steps to be taken and ignited his passion for creating building blocks that encourage future generations to want to stay on the ranches.
The Cariboo Cattleman’s Association recently hosted events in conjunction with Farm Credit Canada on Succession/Transition planning. The events titled “The Transition Process: Empowering your family to be stewards of your land, legacy and business.” presented valuable information for producers to understand the benefits and
steps needed for building a sustainable future and how to improve ranch operations right now. Hereford is the “go to” breed on the Chilco Ranch. Their good disposition, great maternal ability and ability to perform in the Chilcotin, is unmatched.
Jordan feels the future is bright for the Hereford breed, gone are the days of the stereotypical “Old Hereford Cow”, she has evolved to a modern style cow. This modern style cow is highly efficient, and her low maintenance is essential to the ranch due to a limited ranch crew and 1,000 head plus to manage. The ranch maintains a young cow herd with 5-7 years being the top end of the age bracket. There is no doubt the Hereford cow can
last years longer in the area, but for the ranch 5 to 7 years is ideal.
Dean has been a buyer at the Calgary Bull Sale for over 40 years. The sale offers quality Hereford genetics and has established valuable relationships with breeders. A top-quality bull parallels in importance to top quality females and the Chilco Ranch wouldn’t have either without the dedication of purebred breeders and for that they are very thankful. The only other breed used is Red Angus for bulls on the replacement heifers, which are then returned to Hereford bulls the following years.
Spring brings a start to calving and moving cattle on their rotational grazing system for the season. Replacement heifers start calving end of March and are separated from the cows on a newly acquired ranch
“There is no doubt the Hereford cow can last years longer in the area, but for the ranch 5 to 7 years is ideal.”
close by. The cows calve in April on their calving pasture. The pasture rotation system has no fences to move, which makes for less labour and micro-management of the parcels. The pasture rotation system leads the cattle back to the ranch site by fall, but if mother nature helps out, they can often pasture cows until January 1st in the rotation. In May, a week of branding occurs with family and community gathering to lend a hand and enjoy the beautiful background of the ranch scenery.
The red and white cattle offer a nice consistent group to market in the fall and for picking out replacements for the future. Grier believes it is important for the ranch to participate in development programs on herd health and traceability that exist for producers. The ranch is currently enrolled in the Verified Beef Program, Age Verification and Zoetis Select Vac Gold Plus.
The future of the Chilco Ranch is based on sustainability and maintaining what the Chilcotin offers for raising cattle efficiently. Also,

to take on any growth opportunities via land base or adding to industry awareness in British Columbia. Overall, progress and forward thinking is what will keep the future generations engaged in having a future on the Chilco Ranch Modern times and traditions must offer a balance with each other to maintain the vision the Chilco Ranch has for years to come, to continue to raise great cattle.

Bonanza 2023 offers a unique experience on Prince Edward Island
BY JUDY FINSETH Managing EditorExperience a Bonanza like no other with Herefords on-site at a luxury resort. From the natural beauty of Brudenell River Provincial Park to world-class service and resort amenities, the Rodd Brudenell River Resort truly has it all and come July it will be a holiday resort complete with the sound of cattle blowers and Junior Hereford members.
driving range,” says Jeff, “and when you look outside the cattle tents you look down over the water.”
Initial planning is to welcome 100 to 150 head of cattle, but if more enter, they will be made welcome says Jeff. They will also be set up to welcome juniors that want to participate but maybe won’t be able to haul cattle that far east. It is a place that families will want to come to, as there are activities for everyone to participate in.
Bonanza 2023 will be hosted on Prince Edward Island at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort from July 25 to 29, 2023. The site better known for its local attractions including golf, water sports and camping will be transformed into a venue for a junior cattle show. Jeff Matheson heads up the organizing committee of Bonanza 2023 and he explained that tents will be set up to house cattle on what used to be an old golf academy. “Where we are planning on putting the tie-outs is actually on the old
The organizing committee is planning on setting up a Facebook page to update information about the venue and the activities as more information becomes available. CHA communications will also be forthcoming as more details are confirmed.
Bonanza is part of Hereford Week in Canada and that means that the Canadian Hereford Association will be holding Board meetings and its Annual General Meeting at the resort. Plans are also underway to offer more activities and events for the adults that plan on attending. Provincial Hereford associations will be encouraged to send representatives for the annual marketing roundtable. Aside from business there are some potential boat tours planned and with two
golf courses on site there will be plenty of opportunity to relax. “You can basically park your vehicle and not have to move for the week if you don’t want to,” says Jeff.
If you are planning on flying, Charlottetown airport is only roughly half an hour to 45 minutes away. When driving most people will plan to cross Confederation Bridge, but there is a ferry boat on the eastern end of PEI that comes from Nova Scotia.
Rodd Brudenell River Resort is the perfect place to relax and unwind with no shortage of activities and adventures for the whole family! Jeff reports that rooms for this event have been booked already and encourages Hereford breeders from across Canada to consider travelling east this summer for a unique Bonanza and an opportunity to experience the best of Prince Edward Island.
BUILDING TRUST WITH CONSUMERS
BY JILL BURKHARDT Contributing WriterDave Braden is no stranger to efficiency— especially when it comes to building energy efficient homes—but he’s also using efficiency to better his grass-fed beef operation. The Flamborough, Ontario farmer has been raising grass-fed beef since 1972, when he and a cousin purchased two Hereford cows. Neither of them had cattle farming experience, but he claims he was, “fortunate he chose the right breed!”
Braden finds the Hereford breed requires average quality feed, at best. He says they require minimal attention, are docile, easy to handle, and the cows are excellent mothers. “As labour resources grew scarcer and as I age, these qualities become increasingly important.”
Braden is “very selective” on the bulls he uses. He first breeds his cows exclusively by AI for the first cycle and runs them with a clean-up bull. “I’m pretty careful about the size of calves I have, and I want good udders. I want that calf to get up easily by itself. And I want efficiency,” he said. Focusing on hardiness and mothering ability allows a “handsoff” approach that Braden likes to take. The less that he has to put into his herd with vet costs, the better it is for him. Focusing on doing more with less, is definitely how Braden runs his operation.
Braden wants efficiency with his herd. “I don’t need the efficiency, but I want it. I want to set an example and share with the farm community—This is where we’re going.”
He believes in the future we are going to need more efficient animals that can reproduce for more years and give a consistent weight calf every year, “That’s dynamite, I think, especially with little to no costs.”
His farm focuses on raising the animal from birth right through to finish on grass.
And the Hereford breed is giving Braden what he wants, in terms of efficiency. “It provides scientific information,” he said. “Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is a measure of the variation in feed intake that remains
Hereford provides the efficiency needed on this Ontario grass-fed beef operation
after the requirements for maintenance and growth have been met,” according to the Canadian Hereford Association website. It is a useful genetic marker that Braden utilizes a lot. The RFI has allowed members and potential bull customers to not only learn about this trait, but as Braden says, “to take advantage of the fact that certain animals are far more efficient and profitable in turning plants into edible, human food.” He also is appreciative of Hereford breeders who were early adopters of RFI. “Their willingness to pioneer this program and readily share data with the membership is not only appreciated but essential.”
And bigger isn’t always better for Braden. “I want an animal that is smaller, in general, than normal size.” He doesn’t want big calves or large adult animals; he is looking for animals that are smaller and better
Twenty years ago, Braden was focused on maternal traits. “I really wanted a great milking herd.” Now when he looks at an EPD chart, he likes to see two to three generations of good positive, consistent information when it comes to weaning and yearling weights. “I’m always looking for the next generation of daughters; I want daughters that are a lot better than their mothers.”
producers. “I’m a practical person, but I have targets.”
While other EPD numbers are important, Braden feels most breeders are focused on growth alone, where in fact, in his opinion, they should be focused on efficiency. He finds that sometimes RFI numbers are hard to find, or they aren’t published in sale catalogues. “In a few years, it will become one of the most dominant characteristics
“I don’t need the efficiency, but I want it. I want to set an example and share with the farm community—This is where we’re going.”
sought by commercial customers given the financial, environmental, and cultural challenges we face in the beef industry,” he stated.
we could accentuate the efficiency numbers along with weights,” he said.
But where Braden stands out from the herd, is how he markets his animals. He capitalizes on the “buy local” movement, as well as the “grass-fed” label. He also finds customers from people who are very health conscious and want the health benefits from grass-fed beef. He said many people seek out grass-fed beef for its Omega-3 benefits, which helps differentiate his product from conventional raised beef. When Braden sells a steer directly, he gets to set his price, “I am happy, I am proud of this, and I have a great product,” he said. Unfortunately, he has found some adversaries that are upset about him receiving a premium price. “We, the producer, need to have a product that we can get a good price for,” he said. “I want a way of optimizing the amount of money we get for what we do and are respected for it.”
“The Hereford association is doing a lot of good things,” he said. Education on RFI and efficiency to both the consumer and breeder need to continue. “The breed needs to encourage its members and consumers at large that efficiency is what is coming in the future.” Because the information provided to the association is the responsibility of the breeders, they need to be encouraged to be diligent in reporting on efficiency.
He also feels the RFI concept needs to be front and centre. The “Dams of Distinction” program is already in place, and Braden thinks this should be extended to highlight animals with excellent efficiency. “At shows
He also stands behind his grass-fed beef with a full guarantee. If someone buys beef from Braden, if they find something questionable or that they don’t like throughout the time they are eating the beef they can bring the beef back to Braden and he will give the customer their money back. He acknowledges that purchasing a large amount of beef is expensive, but he wants to make it as comfortable as he can. “If they’re not happy, I’ll give them their money back, no questions asked.” It all comes down to building trust and a relationship he said.
Another part of building the farmer to consumer relationship includes inviiting his customers to the farm for visits, free manure, and to see the new calves. “Very few do it, but the idea is to personalize the source of the food.”
“I’m hoping that people can learn from what I’m doing in a positive sense; whether they do it or not at least they are aware,” he said. If producers can get calves to grow well on minimum inputs, Braden feels that is the future.
“The breed needs to encourage its members and consumers at large that efficiency is what is coming in the future.”

The Hereford Breed Improvement (HBI) committee is comprised of CHA Directors and members at large appointed by the CHA president. Its purpose to enhance the breed and its marketability through genetic improvement and performance evaluation programs.
Happy New Year to each of you and all the best for a successful calving season, be it now underway or still to come.
First, I want to discuss the rationale behind distributing the Carcass Merit Decision Tool to each member, as a mail out, in the spring of ’22. Through our industry consultation and strategic planning process-necessary and focused enhancement of carcass merit has been deemed critical for the breed to thrive. Creating Hereford influenced fed cattle that will harvest with more marbling and larger ribeyes, yet maintain acceptable external fat is critical to optimize carcass valuedetermined by yield grade, quality grade and carcass weight. Until breeders broadly embrace the challenge to enhance these characteristics through intentional data accumulation and sire selection-perception and associated pricing of traditional, straightbred feeder calves is unlikely to change.
The Carcass Merit Decision Tool revealed a herd specific average sire EPD value for fat, ribeye area, marbling and carcass weight reflecting the herd bull battery influencing your most recent calves. Those four values were a weighted average, based on resulting progeny, of each sire
contributing to that set of calves. Our defined breed goal is to make yearly 10% EPD improvements in each of those traits to meet our Hereford carcass improvement target. We provided you a second set of four EPD values that were designed to meet that 10% improvement threshold, so long as you ensured your next set of sires collectively could meet those values on average. The difference between the two sets, be it positive or negative, reveals the difference between where your existing sires are and where we would like to see them for suggested improvement.
We can continue lamenting market results and the tools available or we can recognize that ultrasound values are measured and interpreted by unbiased, third-party technicians and labs, respectively. Consequently, this data is as honest and genuine as any measured trait. Considering carcass traits are moderately heritable, the success of focused and diligent selection is clearly validated in the progress American Angus and their CAB program has achieved in drastically shifting quality grade.
Some may contend that focusing on these traits will challenge our maternal superiority or efficiency of forage utilization and body condition maintenance. We have no intent to jeopardize such breed strengths-we simply are challenge everyone to be more selective in isolating genetics with the data and values necessary to elevate carcass merit, all while balancing other trait values. It can be done, just takes a bit of time, effort and possibly investment. Your bull buyers may not directly prioritize such criteria or information, but with time they ought to benefit from it so long as we have breeders begin seriously implementing improvement. We aren’t proposing carcass superiority, but elevating the base of our breed is critical to incorporate more value.
Past that, another DNA question repeatedly posed is if a simple, affordable test for parentage can be requested? Yes, it can be requested from the office staff. The technical challenge that leads to this question is our current online system doesn’t have the
“Creating Hereford influenced fed cattle that will harvest with more marbling and larger ribeyes, yet maintain acceptable external fat is critical to optimize carcass valuedetermined by yield grade, quality grade and carcass weight. “
ability to show this test as available under the DNA request portal. If you want a simple DNA parentage verification test, in the case of multiple sire pastures, please contact Val, Tara or Katie.
Our committee continues to work on other interesting developments including: 1) Superior Sire and Dam Recognition Programs, 2) Genomic-Enhancement of Residual Feed Intake Testing, 3) Consultations regarding development of Canadian Beef Improvement Network, 4) Joint Hereford-Angus Research Projects. These topics are still being developed and discussed, so utilization by the membership isn’t yet applicable.
Finally, I want to make each of you aware and invite you to participate in the 2023 Beef Improvement Federation Annual Symposium, to be hosted in Calgary, AB from July 3-6. This annual event capitalizes on combining committed minds from production, academics and industry who share a common passion-genetic improvement of beef cattle. This event has excellent producer participation and provides an opportunity to expand your knowledge base and thought process to propel our business forward. Many of the most progressive and successful breeding establishments throughout North America and overseas, regardless of breed, will be represented and keen to visit. A pre-tour is also being organized with Hereford centered events and hospitality for anyone interested.
As always, if you have questions or want to provide feedback regarding current or potential breed improvement initiatives-please contact myself or any board members so we can listen to your suggestions. and continue driving quality, value and demand for our breed.
Canadian Hereford Association Executive Director's Report
BY MICHAEL LATIMER Executive Director, Canadian Hereford AssociationOptimism about the future and belief that tomorrow will be better is a foundation of all human societies. This is especially true for those working in agriculture as we always look forward to new calves, better sale results, higher crop yields, timely rain and so much more. As we enter 2023, we have a lot to be thankful for, but we need to be prepared for any challenges on the horizon and capitalize on opportunities.
well on British, Continental and even Brahman cattle. The Baldy cow remains recognized as one of the best beef animals in Canada and is an important part of connecting with the commercial sector.
The Better Your Beef initiative will feature prominently in all CHA activities as it provides strategic direction for the Association and for Hereford breeders. As with any strategy it identifies priorities, challenges and desired outcomes while providing flexibility in the tactics and methods used to achieve success. One of the primary goals is to increase the Hereford Influence throughout the beef industry. This will be extremely challenging given the fact that Canada has many great breeds of cattle with exceptional genetics. Perhaps the most undervalued asset we have is to leverage the genetics of other breeds to create hybrid vigor knowing that Hereford genetics cross exceptionally
One section of the strategy that I want to focus on is that of dispelling the perception of Hereford as yesterdays breed. Hereford remains one of the four largest breed associations in Canada by both annual registrations as well as member and junior memberships. This has been the situation for over a decade which indicates a stable and healthy breed with a bright future. Hereford breeders have culled hard to remove animals from the genetic base that have issues traditionally linked to Hereford cattle, so those are largely a problem of the past. The next step in dispelling any negative perceptions is to communicate improvements in the breed and embrace technology. We need to showcase a modern Association and breed development programs supported by marketing campaigns that target key demographics in support of a positive Hereford brand. Efficiencies in member services that makes it easier to register and transfer animals as well as breed development activities which are of value to the commercial cattle sector are a key component in demonstrating change and creating an image of being a forward-looking breed.
I enjoyed meeting and reconnecting with Hereford breeders at shows and sales across Canada this past fall and look forward to doing so again in 2023. I want to wish everyone the best of luck with upcoming bull sales and throughout calving season.
We need to showcase a modern Association and breed development programs supported by marketing campaigns that target key demographics in support of a positive Hereford brand.
Canadian Junior Hereford Association
CJHA President's Message
BY DANIEL SCHUEPBACH President of the Canadian Junior Hereford AssociationHappy New Year! I hope you enjoyed a great holiday season with family and friends.
In 2023 we are welcoming a new group of delegates, executive and directors at large onto the CJHA board. We are all very excited to organize upcoming CJHA projects and represent fellow juniors. I encourage all CJHA members to contact your provincial delegates with any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like brought up at our national council meetings.
I would like to extend a huge thank you to our outgoing delegates for all their hard work on the board, your work did not go unnoticed. I would also like to thank all the adult advisors, Libby Laycraft and CHA staff for facilitating our events and activities. Most importantly thank you to all our sponsors for your continuous support in growing the next generation of leaders in agriculture and the Hereford breed.
Juniors can develop their own herds by accessing high quality genetics from proven herds through the Semen Donation and Heifer Lottery projects. We also offer the opportunity for juniors to showcase their herds on a national level competing against some of the best cattle in the industry at Bonanza.
There is also the opportunity to practice public speaking, art, photography, judging and showmanship all skills that further develop juniors as strong leaders and producers. Most importantly we give all juniors the opportunity to connect with each other from across Canada while sharing the same love and passion for the Hereford breed. These are friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. So, juniors, keep your eyes and ears peeled for these great opportunities!
The CJHA calendar will hit mailboxes at the beginning of the new year. We would like to acknowledge the Canadian Hereford breeders that advertise their operations and sales in the calendar. Be sure to explore the 2023 calendar for breeders offering top quality genetic opportunities, including sales and operations that are eligible for the CJHA Heifer Lottery.

Bonanza 2023 will take place at the Rodd Brudenell River Resort in Prince Edward Island. With plenty of activities for the entire family, this may end up being the most “vacation like” Bonanza ever and will be a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with each other and see a special part of our country.
As incoming president, I am excited to see what the year has in hold for everyone. I am especially looking
forward to mentoring and encouraging CJHA members to utilize, participate and enjoy the different programs and events the CJHA has to offer.
Most importantly thank you to all our sponsors for your continuous support in growing the next generation of leaders in agriculture and the Hereford breed.

HANS ULRICH
HEREFORD FAREWELLS
It is with great sadness that the family of Hans Ulrich announce his passing, at the age of 92, surrounded by loved one’s on December 13th, 2022, at the Claresholm General Hospital.
DALE WILMS
August 18, 1931November 4, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Dale Melvin Wilms on Friday, November 4th, 2022 at the Cypress Regional Hospital. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and neighbour. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Cora, and their children Lane (Brenda), Laird (Sharon), Darwyn (Ila) and Darren (Lori). He will be forever cherished by his 10 grandchildren, Carolyn, Cortney, Derek, Misty, Jason, Amy, Robyn, Briana, Madison and Karter, his 16 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Dale was the youngest of four children, born on August 18, 1931 on the family homestead just north of where they live now. He completed his education to Grade 12 at Elmwood School in Swift Current. In his youth he worked at the theatre and developed a passion for vintage movies and enjoyed them his entire life. His generation grew up with music and dancing. Although he had no formal music instruction he could play instruments by ear and could cut a rug on the dance floor. Dad was an intelligent gentle man that loved conversation and had an infectious personality. One of Dad’s first jobs was working in the Round House for the CPR. He loved to tell us the stories of those good old days. On April 20th, 1954 Dale married the love of his life, Cora Rebman. They lived in Swift Current for the first years of their marriage, eventually moving out to the farm to raise their family and pursue their dreams. Dad had a love for animals. He was a modern-day grizzly Adams with animals big and small following him around the farm yard. Dale was well-known in the cattle industry for his registered Polled Herefords known as Emerald Springs Polled Herefords. Dale took great pride in raising the animals and selling many bulls at the bull sale in Swift Current and at Agribition. Dale was a lifetime member of the Hereford Association, as well as serving on the Board of Directors of the Hereford Association. He was a councillor in the RM of Swift Current for many years. When Dale and Cora started their “Golden Years” they enjoyed going on many bus tours, visiting casinos in Deadwood, Sky Dancer, Las Vegas and they also went on an Alaskan Cruise. They enjoyed travelling with their dear friends, Bill & Jeanine Robertson, Fred & Ann Borzel and Reg & Beth Parsons. Dad got his wish to remain on the family farm for 91 years. He passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 4, 2022 after being hospitalized for a very short 2 weeks.
HANS ULRICHJuly 20, 1930December 13, 2022
Hans was born July 20th 1930 in Zurich Switzerland, he was the eldest child of Hans and Lina Ulrich. He spent his early years in Oetwil am See, after primary school he went on to farming school. In 1954 Hans made the journey to Canada to see the country and learn the language. He initially spent time in British Columbia in a variety of jobs. When he returned to Switzerland in 1957 he was offered an exciting opportunity to manage a ranch near Claresholm AB for a Swiss lawyer. He came back to Canada with dear friends Florian and Luise Eberl and started managing Dr. Ammann’s Ranch in 1958. In 1960 Hans returned to Switzerland for a visit, and it’s there he met Annette Suter. They returned to Canada and got married June 25, 1960, leading to a long and loving marriage of over 62 years. Together they raised their four children – Elisabeth, Peter, Margaret and Marianne.
Hans had a very strong passion and influence in agriculture, especially the Hereford industry. In time he and his wife were able to purchase the ranch, operating under the very successful operation of Ulrich Hereford Ranch. Hans made many friends within the industry all over North America and was well respected by his peers. The ranch split between his son and son-in-law in the early 2000s in which Hans continued to be an integral part of both operations. Hans was known to be a family man and of strong Christian faith. He spent his “retired” years still being an essential part of day to day operations by running errands, transporting grandchildren, making his weekly journey on Wednesdays for the sale at Balog Auction Mart, and always ensuring to have a good visit with friends.
Hans leaves behind his loving wife Annette; children, Elisabeth Weber (Fritz), Peter, Margaret Schuepbach (Andy), and Marianne; grandchildren Leah Weber, Ruth & Daniel Schuepbach, and Michelle Unsworth (Clint). He is also survived by siblings Ursula Isler, George Ulrich, & Regula (Chris) Witschi. As well as many other relatives and friends in Canada and Switzerland.

Provincial Report
BY JANICE TAPP British Columbia Hereford Association Secretary-ManagerHere we are again-end of a year and a new year begins. Here are some highlights of last year and a look forward to 2023.
AGM held in early September with two new members elected as Directors: Kym Jim and Shannon Moebis. It is great to have the increased geographic representation. Thanks to Kym for letting his name stand for Vice President for 2023.
Planning 3 MOE shows is happening around the province: the Interior Provincial Exhibition in Armstrong, the West Coast Show in the Lower Mainland and one for Hwy. 16
Providing awards for 4H members & Juniors around the province continues to be an objective. Thanks to the CHA for their monetary assistance which we matched in order to do this. We gave out a dozen awards last year and hope to continue this year.
Yearly events are returning. Our BC Cattlemen’s AGM, one of the largest gatherings of cattle producers in BC, will be held In Vernon in May 2527. The BCHA will be there.
New logo for BC Hereford to go along with the CHA Better your Beef. New advertising signs will be coming to our major auction marts.
Each of our clubs in BC are excited to be getting back to normal with events and activities. The clubs have struggled the past few years but are actively working to recruit members and planning events to bring back the comraderie of past years.
Herefords Across Canada Provincial Reports
West Coast Hereford Club held their first in person meeting since 2019 in November. It was very well attended with over twenty-four people in attendance in Aldergrove. A new executive was elected and discussions were held on events for the club. They will be having an MOE show on September 16.
Yellowhead Hereford Breeders’ Assn. are looking forward to holding their first in person meeting in over two years on January 21 in Vanderhoof
addresses are being used to circulate the newsletter and other information saving a lot of money which is used to support other BCHA activities. Please make sure yours is on file.

An Association is only as good as the input from its members. Keep in touch with our Directors and Clubs. Please Be Active.
Remember-we all received genetic, breed and EPD reports on our herds. Use them to help make choices for your cattle going forward. Let’s Better Your Beef.

PROVINCIAL REPORTS
Alberta AB Provincial Report
BY CONRAD FENTON Alberta Hereford Association PresidentAn extremely busy fall run has come to an end in Alberta as winter has come hard and fast. I’m hoping enough feed has been put away as the province has seen everything from extreme drought to above average yields.
Calf prices have for the most part remained fairly steady which has been crucial to keep up with higher than ever feed costs. The cull cow and bull market has recently backed off but held on remarkably well considering the sheer number of cows on the market. There are dispersals and bred sales happening daily which speaks to the state of the cattle business. Every available acre seems to be being tore up and put into crop. At some point one would think demand will outreach supply, provided imports from South America don’t fill the gap as their low cost of production is a huge advantage in the marketplace.
As a board we have just come off a successful show season that started with the Alberta Hereford Showcase in Red Deer. I believe it was the largest show hosted in Canada with well over 200 entries. This consisted of the Genes Event where despite the horrible roads and weather we hosted over 350 commercial cattlemen. This was followed up by the Gene’s of the Future Female Sale with a strong set of heifers selling to a strong demand. The open show kicked off on the Friday and the Junior Show and Heifer Futurity rounded out the week on the Saturday. Thanks to all the many volunteers and board members for hours of dedicated work.
Farmfair International was once again held in Edmonton. A big thank you to the Skyvirtu Ranch, Kevin Schaub for carrying the lion’s share of the work. All positive reports from the show as many breeders made their way to Edmonton to take it in.
We are quickly moving into the Bull Congress Season. Stay tuned to your area as Grande Prairie, Lloyminster, Camrose, and Stettler all host forms of a Bull Congress. As we speak the Pen Show in Medicine Hat will kick off that is always a well-attended and successful event. Good luck to all the production sales that are in progress and yet to come. Provincial Report

Ontario Hereford cattle are dominating the show ring this fall! Cleaning up from fair to fair with overall Supremes all breeds in the bull and female side at multiple shows.
The 100th anniversary of the Royal Winter Fair was a huge success. The National committee held countless meetings and it showed. Thank you to all who helped organize, plan and execute the 2022 National Hereford show, your hard work has not gone unnoticed. Thank you to all who sponsored without you we would not be able to make such an event a success. The cattle, exhibitors and breeders were so well represented and it truly was a first-class show. Congratulations to all who competed. The exhibitors brought out such high quality of cattle to the National Hereford Show. The breed truly showed how deep of a breed it is with the Supreme Champion Female of the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Winter Fair coming from the Hereford division, as well two Hereford bulls making the top 5 on their side of the Masterfeeds Supreme Championship
As the breeding stock and show cattle quality gets deeper, it only makes all attributes of the breed improve. We have been seeing this in the Ontario stockyards this fall, as the Hereford and Hereford influence cattle are selling extremely well and the stocker market is at a steady high from week to week. As this is happening in the stock yards the fall sale run in the purebred Hereford sales was exceptionally strong with new and old breeders jumping in and getting some of the best genetics around. This all shows that HEREFORDS are gunning for all the other breeds in full force and are here to compete in the sales barn
Congratulations to everyone on another success year in the cattle business. Happy New Year!
