here’s no question the concept of sustainability is making an impact on the decisions home builders are making, with 2022 seeing a trend towards smaller overall footprints. “A few years ago, there were a greater number of homes that were 250 square metres or more, but we are seeing a resurgence in demand for smaller homes from around 60 square metres to mid-size family homes around 180 square metres,” says Lockwood managing director Andrew La Grouw.
“This seems to be partly due to the cost of land and smaller sections, but also people seem to be taking on board the idea that bigger is not necessarily better,” says La Grouw. Being local has had an added advantage for Lockwood and their clients this year, during a time when the construction industry has experienced considerable disruption in the supply chain. For more than 70 years, Lockwood has been providing Kiwis with locally grown homes – quite literally. “Sustainability has always been a key driver of ours, ever since the 1950s when the founders of Lockwood conceived the idea to use plantation pine from New Zealand forests, instead of importing materials from Europe,” says Andrew.
“Our improved processes minimise waste through thoughtful assessment and optimisation of our timber materials. We only apply timber treatment to finished components, so our shavings are untreated and are made into wood pellets for sustainable heating. Our components are manufactured to finished dimensions; there is very little waste generated on the building site. “We have been able to continue our manufacturing and construction uninterrupted (in the past year), which is of great relief for our local suppliers and those whom we are building homes for.” 0508 562 596| lockwood.co.nz
