It’s getting hot in here

I’m sitting here on a balmy early November morning. That anticipation of summer is seeping into my veins – the windows are open, music is on, and the sun is reflecting off my morning espresso. Across the board, I feel like the festive season is here to stay.

We set out to fill this issue with great content centred around planning your summer holidays. Whether you’re staying put and exploring our local walks (see page 30 for a few destinations off the beaten path) or island hopping to Fiji, or just up north, I hope you have your sights set on making the most of your summer.

In a Christmas period that is peppered with American-centric snowy scenes and chestnuts-roasting-on-an-open-fire propaganda, I’m happy to work on my freckles, get into the garden, and have a breezy, balmy Christmas.

Speaking of snowy, Kate’s sharing with us all things icy, this issue – we introduced Kate, an Auckland transplant, to a Cantabrian staple, Ice Cream Charlie. Read all about it in our Palate section, and maybe pay our mates at Ice Cream Charlie a visit for a taste of nostalgia. Tell them Aves sent you!

I’ve got plenty planned over the new year and beyond – I’m celebrating another birthday and will be visiting friends in Tauranga and even spending time with the in-laws in Wānaka. I’m all over the place in all the best ways. Summer rules.

Kicking off in November was the Court Theatre’s rendition of Rent. I was lucky enough to attend opening night. Thanks to a flawless show by the Court’s wonderful troupe of creatives, performers, musicians, and supporters, it is still cemented as one of my favourite musicals. I love its storytelling and the very human approach it takes to crises, both public and personal. Just as Jonathan Larson instilled humanity into his art with Rent, I’ve, this month, looked to others who have done the same and achieved incredible works while keeping true to the human condition. There’s my favourite TV show for 2022, a masterpiece expertly created by Guillermo del Toro, a book that will have you glued to its pages, and a song from the archives bringing back the almost haunting harmonies of The Beach Boys. Rent is on ’til 21 January, get along.

Reminiscent of The Twilight Zone, Guillermo del Toro presents a range of odd stories by different directors in Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

This series on Netflix skates through various horror genres and captures the unique talents of individual filmmakers.

It is absurd, a little scary, and in some places, it’s just plain brilliant.

ARCHIVAL ARRIVAL

Originally recorded for The Beach Boys’ 1973 album Holland, Carry Me Home laid dormant and was unreleased until this year. I can understand why it wasn’t released initially, as it centres around a soldier dying in Vietnam and has a very different feel from the other tracks on the album. Its haunting harmonies will send a shiver down your spine.

PACED PERFECT

Real, relevant, and relatable. Better the Blood by Michael Bennett is an excellent thriller with a real New Zealand at its core. It’s modern and moving, twisted and tense. You won’t put this book down thanks to its near-perfect pacing and the ease it takes to visualise every plot element. You’ll be transported into the protagonist’s world and absorbed in the thrill right to the very end.

Gap Filler’s Dance-O-Mat is one of Ōtautahi’s most iconic post-quake initiatives – a moveable dance floor that encourages everyone to see the city as a stage! The Dance-OMat has made its home at a number of central city locations but has recently nestled into the vacant lot next to Irish pub Paddy McNaughton’s on Manchester Street. The formerly dilapidated spot has now been brought to life, not just through dance and music, but with an array of urban art additions. Along the top of the northern wall, a large black and white wall painting declares the spot as a ‘Place of Play’, signifying its inclusion in Gap Filler’s Urban Play Network. But it is underneath the monotone painting that the walls really come to life; traditional graffiti pieces and characters produced for the 2022 Christchurch Hip Hop Summit Graffiti Jam bring vibrant colour and a sense of presence. Across the lot, a dedicated paste-up wall, covered by members of the Slap City collective with an array of faces, phrases, and playful imagery, adds variety and embraces the potential for change. Go on, grab your dancing shoes!

What’s afternoon tea without Aulsebrook’s?

In an unpretentious shop on Colombo Street in 1863, John Aulsebrook began what would become, a century later, a multimillion-pound iconic Kiwi brand. He’d ended his five-month-long business partnership with William Cole in September and gone solo. He, his wife, and his child had arrived in Lyttelton from England as government immigrants in late 1859. They lived in a house attached to the premises where Aulsebrook baked biscuits in a hand-fired brick oven.

In 1866 he took John Meadows on as a business partner and imported a steam biscuit machine and flour mill to make their flour. By 1868, the City Steam Flour Mill and Biscuit Manufactory was bankrupt and sold, only to be purchased again by Aulsebrook in 1877. During this time, Aulsebrook remained manager. William McDougall joined the business in 1878, and even though the partnership only lasted a year, it would bring about a change in fortune for the brand.

For the first 25 years, Aulsebrook & Co produced only biscuits. In 1888 confectionery was added, followed by chocolates in 1895. The turning point for the business was when

Robert McDougal, son of William, came in as a junior partner. Eventually, Aulsebrook sold his shares to McDougall and focused his attention elsewhere. He died in Auckland in 1905.

The ‘thrifty Scot’ McDougall had a knack for making his products “a little bit better than most of his competition,” so the business grew. Although thrifty, he was also generous and is publicly best known for gifting £30,000 to the Art Gallery that bears his name. He remained governing director of Aulsebrooks up until his death in 1942.

Formed into a private company in 1928, Aulsebrook’s went public in 1952, amalgamated in 1961, and a new holding company, AB Consolidated, was formed.

Pick up a map at the entrance, and stop by Information Centre to appreciate this native forest regeneration project.

SCAPE Public Art revolutionises the open spaces of Ōtautahi and public art practice in Aotearoa by installing free-to-view contemporary public art in the central city. With a focus on its annual ‘seasons’, SCAPE has become the largest producer of new contemporary public artwork in New Zealand. These artworks provide a unique point of difference for the city. Ambitious and high impact, they enhance the urban centre and raise the profile of public art in Christchurch.

Executive Director Deborah McCormick recently resigned after a highly successful 25 years at the helm.

“When I started looking at the vision with the trust, we were committed to seeing an ‘art-full’ city. Now, I believe it’s done, and I feel like my chapter is complete. For me, this is my last season. I started SCAPE at 23, and now being close to 50, I feel it’s a nice time to reinvent myself, you know – look towards the next ten years.”

“I see myself as a producer – taking an idea with an artist and making it happen. I’m going to expand and take on projects in my own capacity. I’m leaving space for the next creative to put their stamp on SCAPE for the next 25 years.”

“I’m exploring different pathways within the same subject matter. I see myself as ‘Deborah: Public Art’, so I like taking art into context outside of gallery spaces, where people can get exposure to public art; exploring new modes of what public art looks like in the future for different publics.”

Deborah mentions that the board is committed to the 25 years of SCAPE, producing more legacy artwork.

“There’s a focus on creating the next suite of public artwork for the city and becoming known as a destination globally for public art.”

The SCAPE Public Art Season 2022 brings works from eight local and international artists to the city. Each artist’s work will showcase their unique interpretation of this year’s theme, Sweat Equity, a compelling conclusion to Managing Curator Jamie Hanton’s overall vision of ‘Fictions’, which has tied together SCAPE Public Art’s seasons from 2020–2022.

Deborah encourages people to take the walkway and see the works as they were originally conceived.

“It feels like a nice compact show, both thematically and geographically. I would encourage people to think about how the curator conceives the project as a whole and the different touch points along the way. You’ve got so many different elements of textures in terms of public art – a really beautiful quiet work by Wendelien Bakker, moving right through to a poignant sound work by Dr Jo Burzynska in the Botanic Gardens. We have captivating works like Cognitive Reorientation by Eddie Clemens.”

SCAPE’s vision is for people to be excited, engaged, and stimulated by contemporary public art and for Ōtautahi Christchurch to be a city with a world-class collection of public art that is widely known and visited.

Ripe returns

Ripe, The Wānaka Wine and Food Festival returns to the shores of Lake Wānaka on Saturday, 18 March 2023. This festival is all about passion and energy for the best wine and food of the region and our country.

After Covid restrictions forced Ripe Wānaka’s 2022 event to be postponed, locals and visitors have been hanging out to join the wide range of Central Otago Wine and Food producers on show. Ripe 2023 will be held at Glendhu Station, located within a ten-minute drive of Wānaka township and a stone’s throw away from one of New Zealand’s most beautiful campgrounds, Glendhu Bay Motor Camp.

Odeon awaits

New Regent’s undeniable magic is spreading with the impending arrival of Odeon – a new dining establishment by Shafeeq Ismail, the creative force behind the restaurant Story. Odeon will open on the New Regent end of Gloucester Street in the coming weeks.

Shafeeq says Odeon is named in homage to an establishment he worked at in India, famous for its slow-cooked meats. Shafeeq also acknowledges Tuam Street’s Odeon Theatre – the oldest masonry theatre in New Zealand as an influential namesake.

The Spanish-inspired menu ranges from small to very large plates, all designed to be shared around the table. As an all-day eatery, coffee will be served, as well as weekend brunches. Evenings will focus on larger dishes with plenty of game meat – things like wild goat venison, which Shafeeq says is abundant here.

The Andalusian food focuses on the south of Spain, with touches of the Mediterranean on the lunch menu and even dishes inspired by

“They are made by passionate people who care greatly for what they do and the land they work on. These are not wines that you will find on every wine list, and we are incredibly fortunate to be able to list them.”

Christchurch-based homeowner, Casey, owns two houses in Hanmer Springs which he advertises for short-term rent. For second homeowners, there can often be a toss-up between whether to have the home as a long-term tenancy or holiday rental. THE RIGHT TIME TO BUY IS NOW

Finding the right home can be a challenge at any time. But buying a home in the right market at the right time is less important than the period you intend to own it. With interest rates rising, it’s no surprise that some buyers might decide to wait before taking the plunge into the housing market.

Much can be read, digested, and speculated regarding the current property market and its values, with opinions and expectations on what it will look like over the next year or so varied. All this noise can make the prospect of buying at the perfect time an anxious decision, with the uncertainty of what the future might bring.

Kiwis, on average, own a home for seven and half years, during which time it is almost certain to increase significantly in value. Yes, currently, there are affordability challenges. General living costs alongside mortgage rates are rising, and we are also in a very competitive job market with employers looking to attract and retain talent.

“I remember purchasing my first house in St Albans for $110,000. I was very excited and still

recall the emotions 25 years later,” says Golden Homes Canterbury Director Dean McGuigan.

“Maybe I paid five per cent too much, and maybe I didn’t. What I do know now is that time cures everything, and timeliness in that market did not really make a significant impact. It is the length of time I owned that freezing old house, not so much the timing of when I purchased it, that mattered the most.”

The chances of finding the perfect house, and timing the market when it is the cheapest, are very slim.

Dean’s advice: “If you can find your ideal house now, grab it.”

Dean says very few people have regretted buying a home when they have kept it for seven to 10 years. “I never have, and my parents never did. Ask around, and you will hear similar stories to mine, there are plenty of them, and I am sure you will come up with the same answer.”

Step aside from the noise, and remember, time in the market is vital, not timing the market.

TURNING UP THE SUMMER HEAT

Summer, what does it mean to you? Do you look forward to it with longing or start a countdown as soon as Daylight Saving commences?

Is it the lighter food that’s so attractive? Longer days? Brighter clothes? Or a combination of all of these things?

I have so many memories of summers spent here and overseas. There have been a lot of short, hot summers in France – or été as the French call it – where seemingly the whole population heads away to rest and relax with family and friends.

It may be the height of the tourist season, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find little Post-it notes taped onto windows of unique, usually family-owned, businesses in Paris saying simply “away for the month.” I love the thought of this.

Another hot, or should I say burning hot, summer was spent visiting Alice Springs and Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock. I’d explain it as an experience similar to putting your head into an oven. If it’s on your bucket list, be prepared to do things at 3 or 4am to beat the heat – and don’t be surprised if you’re sharing the pool with huge numbers of local birds.

Here in this beautiful hometown of mine and in my own life, summer is busy, very busy. The pace is on, and the scene is set. The property market is usually highly active as people seek to be settled by Christmas and social events punctuate every week. It’s also a time when the countdown is on for Christmas, which makes our summer particularly interesting. While those in the northern hemisphere are lighting fires, drinking eggnog, and rugging up for the cold, we are having barbeques and heading to the beach, rivers, pools, and wherever else we can find to cool off. And in Christchurch, there’s a lot for us to enjoy, so get out and do that.

Now, with all this talk of Christmas and holidays, it’s probably appropriate that I say: have a fabulous time, enjoy the summer and everything on offer.

It’s been one heck of a year: personally, it’s had its share of ‘ups’, including travelling back to Paris once again to find those crazy little notes in some of the windows, and ‘downs’ with long Covid and its fatiguing effect… as well as some significant special family events.

So, from me to you, here’s to a safe and happy festive season, and I’ll see you with bells on in 2023!

Salad days

As the days lengthen and we reacquaint ourselves with balmy temperatures, I find it fascinating how our desire to consume changes too. We eat outside, often with other people. We crave crunch, ice-cold liquids, and charred food we can eat with our hands.

Bowls of colourfully diverse, toothsome and textural salads are a must. But what even is a salad? From those with fancy names like Waldorf, Greek, or Caprese to the iceberg wedge, leafy mesclun straight from the bag. Those with 70 ingredients, or the debate about the presence of fruit. They all have their place.

As we gather around barbecues and serve food for a crowd, maybe the salad on offer doesn’t need to be a typical combination. We’re better off experimenting with what’s affordable, fresh, and in-season rather than filling a bowl with expensive, out-of-season produce to follow the imaginary rules.

Opting for one or two hero ingredients is a power move. Heirloom tomatoes in their prime (stored at room temperature – not in the fridge!) need nothing more than olive oil, flaky sea salt, and torn basil. If you did the same in winter, you’d be bitterly disappointed. I also love strawberries with fresh mint and balsamic.

If in doubt, go heavy on the acid. A squeeze of citrus (and zest, too) or a slosh of vinegar will breathe new life into any vegetable. Balsamic, red wine, white wine, apple cider, or

even a fancy chardonnay option – like chefs use on oysters. Fresh herbs and mustards will level up your dressings too. Then find the best extra virgin olive oil you can get your hands on and appreciate its grassy, peppery nature. My favourite olive oil is Robinsons Bay from Akaroa. So good it’s worthy of drinking.

My 12-year-old nephew is obsessed with a celery salad I make at home due to the generous presence of rice wine vinegar. Alongside sliced celery, there’s cucumber, spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, coriander, soy sauce, and sesame oil. It’s deliciously hydrating and satisfyingly crunchy, and he’ll drink the dressing at the end if we let him.

Another hack to ramp up your salad game is toasted nuts, seeds, and flavour bombs like tangy capers, salty olives, or preserved lemon. I love roasting salted cashews, frying sliced almonds and capers in browned butter or toasting sunflower seeds in a dash of tamari and sprinkling them liberally. And then there’s cheese in all its glorious forms.

Over the next few months, when produce is abundant, let yourself re-think what a salad means. Smash a cucumber instead of slicing it. Roast half a red onion and make a quick pickle with the rest. Choose a super fresh lettuce, pair it with a punchy lemony yoghurt dressing and some Italian parsley and enjoy.

A salad doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated; it just needs to taste alive. Let what you eat this season be relaxed, convivial, and delicious.

Gelato Lab is what happens when a love of science meets an adoration for Italian gelato. Owner Pippa Scott is a research scientist who fell for gelato while studying in Europe. She works alongside Martina, an Italian woman with gelato in her bloodline. On the table of ‘elements’, you’ll find stracciatella and dark chocolate next to sorbettos like grapefruit and black pepper or apple and mint. Served with a traditional metal spatula, it’s smoother and silkier as it contains less butterfat than ice cream, allowing flavours to come through more intensely. There’s liquorice, caramelised fig, and my personal fave, custard (crema), which is especially good when paired with rhubarb. Opawa locals are weaving their way down the street on balmy summer afternoons to join the line.

There’s an undeniable charm about the simplicity of a food truck that’s been serving vanilla ice cream to residents of this city since 1903. Even the font provokes historical sentiment. Made in small batches every week, you choose a cone or a cup with toppings including raspberry, chocolate, passionfruit, and optional chocolate chips. I opted for the traditional sundae, involving a tub of vanilla ‘ice’ with a perfect hole scooped out to create space for the raspberry syrup and a dash of runny cream. The concept is foreign, yet the nostalgic raspberry flavour takes me immediately back to my gleeful eight-yearold self. Charlie’s Vanilla Ice will continue to delight weekend city wanderers and Te Pae visitors as it has all those who have come before them – oh, and they do affogatos!

There’s a young woman in this city creating tubs of small-batch buttermilk ice cream that we all need. She makes edgy flavours like cookie dough, Victoria sponge, and miso butterscotch peanut. Nadiah fell in love with cultured butter while at French Pastry School in Paris. After arriving in New Zealand in 2020, she couldn’t find any – so she made her own. Culcha, her award-winning cultured butter, is made by fermenting cream with lactic bacteria that develops a distinctly tangy and nutty flavour. This process leaves behind cultured buttermilk, which she transforms into a rich French anglaise with egg yolks, creating dense and delicious ice cream. ‘Nenek’ means grandmother in Malay, an ode to her heritage. Utopia Ice was one of my first tastes of Ōtautahi when I landed here in early 2021. I still dream of the spiced peach sorbet, sweet and tart with an incredibly creamy (despite being dairy-free), almost furry texture – like eating the skin of the peach itself. It was heaven. After starting at the Christchurch Farmers’ Market, they now have two vibrant sites, one on High Street and the HQ in Sumner. Their whimsical offerings, both classic and vegan, are made from scratch, using organic ingredients, free-range eggs, and local Canterbury milk. I adore their house-made gluten-free waffle cone, speckled with ground almonds. My go-to order: dark chocolate and sea salt sorbet with a scoop of Greek yoghurt and lemon.

Rollickin Gelato is a sought-after institution here in Christchurch, and every time I walk past, the music is pumping, the line is long, and they are delivering the goods. I’m a big fan of the Mister Mint Choc, a controversial flavour for some, but the use of real mint leaves and organic milk provides a cool and refreshing kick, with flecks of smooth dark chocolate scattered throughout. The enticing names and creative descriptions of both their gelato and baked goods may make you smirk, like the Ashley Bloomfield apple pie with a scoop of hokey tokey pokey. The Yogi Bear with yoghurt gelato and a swirl of gooey caramel is a big hit too, but whatever you choose, make sure to fill your cone or cup with a shot from the luxurious chocolate tap.

There aren’t too many out there making 1kg panforte cakes, but Pilgrim took on the challenge. WITH BARBECUED ASPARAGUS

SERVES 1

200g Black Origin flat iron steak

3 heads of asparagus

1kg Wagyu beef bones

1 lemon

100g Wagyu fat

1 small handful of chive flowers

1 nasturtium flower

3 small nasturtium leaves salt to taste

Smoke the beef fat using mānuka chips in a smoker or BBQ for roughly half an hour. Once smoked, transfer the fat to a pan on medium heat and allow it to render out. Once enough of the fat has rendered to a liquid, strain and place aside for later use.

Roast the Wagyu bones in an oven at 180°C until the bones have evenly browned. Transfer to a pot and top with cold water. Place the pot on a stove and simmer for around six hours, topping up with water every 30 minutes. Strain the liquid into a smaller pot and reduce it to a consistency that will coat the back of a spoon. Season with lemon juice, smoked Wagyu fat, and salt. Add the chive flowers to this sauce just before plating.

Pull the flat iron out of the fridge 20 minutes before cooking (this allows the meat to cook evenly). Generously season the steak on all sides. Place the Wagyu on a hot barbecue for around four minutes on each side or to your preferred cooking temperature. Rest the steak well before slicing.

Whilst the steak is resting, peel the asparagus, season it, and place it on the barbecue until cooked.

KING OF WINNERS

After recently taking out the 2022 Hospitality Awards Supreme award, King of Snake’s David Warring had a quick five to chat with Avenues editor Joshua about their new Terrace location, the team behind the win, and the summer ahead for the restaurant.

Firstly, congratulations on your wins! Tell us all about it! We were thrilled with the result and so humbled. Winning Restaurant Of The Year and the Supreme Award was outstanding and a massive achievement for all of the individuals that contributed to that result. I am really proud of the entire team. They’ve worked hard in very difficult circumstances and under immense pressure, and still, they’ve delivered. I think it speaks to the culture we’ve created. We have a shared ideal, and we work toward it by expecting and encouraging the best in each other.

Speaking of the team, tell us about your talented crew. We are very fortunate to have some very loyal and passionate leaders. Ole, our head chef and Dang, her husband, are completely committed, and it shows in the quality and consistency of our food. They’ve worked extremely hard and deserve the accolades. Lewis, Monte, and Sammy have done an outstanding job as a senior management team. There are too many names to mention, but it’s not possible without all of them, and I am very mindful of that and so grateful.

You’ve now settled into your new location on The Terrace. How is that going? It’s fundamentally an entirely different restaurant. My wife, Jennifer (Warring – of Studio Collective), and I worked together for a year on this project. It’s always an unknown as to whether the market will love the elements you put together as much as you do, so it

was hugely rewarding to win the outstanding design and ambience award as well. Both Jen and I fell in love with the openness of the space and knew that whatever we did, we needed to make the best use of its unique aspect. I also believed that the market had outgrown the traditional theme approach to the interior. We took a calculated risk by showing some discipline and restraint in the design. Because of the scale of the space, I knew we had a unique opportunity to create a sense of arrival and movement through the space that would provide a feeling of luxury and generosity and a sense of personal ownership. Jennifer was able to interpret that resort-like experience I was aiming for. She made some really good decisions about details as simple as floor levels that capitalised on the opportunity. We were able to source some stunning materials across the globe, and our relationships with some of the trades enabled us to pull off some stunning features, like our bespoke marble floors and restored antique joinery. There were some very nervous moments about the decisions we’d made, but when it came together, we knew we had created something special. We’re thrilled at the feedback we’ve had from our customers, and the support has been really encouraging.

Spend an evening with Six Ounces

Six Ounces is fast becoming a Christchurch institution, and thanks to the addition of late-night dining, the Papanui Road eatery is cemented as a local for the Merivale and St Albans community.

Avi Cohen and Lois Parmenter have gained a raft of experience between them. Following a chance meeting at Al Brown’s Depot Eatery in Auckland, the couple gained nearly a decade of experience working at Queenstown’s Amisfield Winery, with even a stint in London. Like many others, Covid encouraged a return to Ōtautahi, Avi’s home town, where the concept of Six Ounces was born.

Lois mentions gathering a “great little group” of local suppliers to service the eatery. With Switch Espresso for coffee, Le Panier and Full Time Tart to provide delicious pastries and sweet treats, Avi and Lois were able to serve great brews and freshly made sandwiches from early morning until afternoon. Avi says the team at Six Ounces is like family.

This year, the couple decided to venture into late-night dining. With Six Ounces now open until

10pm daily, the venue offers an extensive wine list, a range of craft beers, and select premium spirits alongside various kinds of cheese, meat, and antipasti boards. You can order these directly off the menu or make your own creation.

The drinks menu is well-considered and updated regularly. Regulars tend to have their favourite tipples and antipasti options.

Good news on the pet front; the entire place is dog friendly, day or night. You can purchase a range of dog treats, from long chews to pup ice cream, to keep your pooch happy while you dine. You might even encounter the real boss during your visit – resident four-legged pal Brixton.

‘Summer rules’

Now, this could be taken two ways. Summer Rulz! And Summer Rules (defined as principles that describe or prescribe what is possible or allowable). Perhaps it’s my desire for order, but I prefer the latter.

That said, it’s difficult this year for us to have ‘Summer Rules’ as they require a degree of surety and planning. As I write this, our gazebo is still deep in a storage container in Hornby. That might sound like a first-world problem, but this piece of camping equipment is a key part of our outdoor summer living; we BBQ, get out of the heat of the bus and give one another some space.

Something we usually do every Christmas is hiring a Karaoke machine. Some scoff, but they’re not scoffing after a few wines and checking to see if Love Shack is on the song list. Fortunately, I kept my Karaoke Bluetooth mics with us as I couldn’t risk losing track of these little gems. I charge them every day, so they are ready to go at a moment’s notice.

An important part of getting Christmas sorted is organising the food. I thought we might try a food bag type delivery this year, but the issue with this in a house bus is the size of the fridge, which is like a minibar. It’s actually bigger inside than it looks (we have nicknamed it ‘The Tardis’), but it sure as hell isn’t going to fit food for four people.

So now the ‘Summer Rules’ are going completely out the window. I can’t really plan Christmas Day; the changeover of winter to summer stuff is being thwarted by belongings lost deep in the bowels of shipping containers (yes, that includes clearly marked ‘summer clothes’), and don’t get me started on where I am going to put the tree and decorations – if we ever find them. Rob made a rather rude suggestion about where the tree could go when I raised this with him recently.

In view of the challenges of ‘Summer Rules’ this year, I’ve decided to go with Summer Rulz! instead and just chill in the shade of a tree, and be very grateful for what we have.

Riding with Harry, my five-year-old German Shepherd, means we both enjoy the thrill of the ride. We have explored Hanmer Springs backcountry, café rides to Rakaia and a few other hotspots in North Canterbury, and even riding up to Kaikōura overnight. This summer, we’re off with the camp gear and fly-fishing rod packed. I often ride with a group of mates, and from them to strangers – and even myself – we all have a little extra smile when we ride together. It’s so amazing the number of people that smile, take photos, and come up and begin chatting. I’ve not yet come across a grumpy bum. I never considered the attention that riding with a big dog would bring. I must admit, it makes my riding a lot more courteous compared to when I ride a Ducati Supersport! I’ve been planning to ride the entire outline of New Zealand with Harry, starting in Christchurch and heading south, to begin with. I would like to have that done and dusted before the end of this summer. I guess if the wife is reading this – surprise!

Harry’s safety and mine are a core focus when choosing the right carrier. I chose a Ruffly K9 Moto-Cockpit from ruffly.com. Their design and customised dog harness lock Harry down into his seat from his backside and his chest, ensuring little movement when we ride. RexSpecs, his goggles, provide safety for his eyes from the same types of bugs that hit my helmet screen. I met a man two weeks ago that was on a solo motorcycle adventure around New Zealand. We shared some memories in Oxford, North Canterbury, about his late mate from the past called, Max Corkill. Max was the guy that rode a motorcycle with his cat called Rastus. Talking about that made me realise that while there are so many dangers out there these days on our roads, you can still have some genuine fun riding a motorcycle, and have even more fun when riding with your dog.

“Post-earthquakes, I had a disconnect in my teaching, especially with the way we were expected to teach writing under the national standards. Teaching suddenly became uncomfortable for me, and I ‘had’ loved it.

“I’ve always been a hobby writer, so I took time out to do a Masters in Creative Writing and wrote a collection of flash fiction. It was long distance, which suited me because I could just disappear into my little room in the roof of our house, up a spiral staircase. Out one window, I see the Alps, and the other way is the ocean.

“I was told off for daydreaming at school. I don’t think the idea that you can be a writer was ever in my head. It wasn’t a real thing. It was either a teacher, a nurse, a secretary, or an air hostess. So, yes, it took me a long time to actually start writing. Now I get to do what

I was always doing as a little one, making stuff up, which is fabulous!

“When Glyn, who had been the director at the School for Young Writers retired, I took it on with some trepidation. I’m a teacher at heart, so the two loves have just been so connected. I feel incredibly lucky to be doing this work.

“Children don’t often experience getting to write in their own voice. We encourage them to write from who they are, from what they want to say. They’re each individual; they’re totally unique, so no two pieces should be the same.

“My new thing for this year? I’m learning ballet for the first time in my life! It was what I really wanted to do when I was six, and my mother said no because I was very clumsy. I’m totally useless, but nobody cares. I’m a silver swan, and there’s a whole new adventure in that.”
