October’s Avenues signifies one of the more exciting months of the year for me. Not only am I beginning to thaw out (somewhat literally) and enjoy the warmer weather, but it’s also a chance to get out and about and spend time with friends and family in our dynamic city. I’m looking forward to ciders in the sun up the top of Riverside, brunch bakery visits to Bellbird at The Tannery, and a little bit of retail therapy at The Crossing, amongst other things. I’m also looking forward to upping my gelato intake considerably.

If you follow our Instagram, you may see some of the wider team’s exploits this spring. One thing is for certain; the entire Aves team love to get out and about! As a well-rounded (ahem) fan of all things foodie, I accompanied our food editor Kate Underwood on assignment for this issue’s reviews – it’s a hard life, I tell you! We’ve brought you eggs in every fashion – make sure you pay our featured eggs a visit!

We have included some great aspirational adventures in this issue. Whether you’re keen to travel near (Methven, Marlborough, or even Dunedin) or far (Fiji, baby!), make sure you read up on our featured destinations.

On Show is the fantastic new moniker for our city’s spring events. There’s so, so much on offer out there for Canterbury. From live music events like The Killers (wahoo!) to the Fast5 netball champs to the quintessential Cup and Show week fun, you’ll be spoilt for choice throughout the warmer days ahead. ADDINGTON CUP WEEK

Springtime in Canterbury always delivers, and it wouldn’t be a true celebration of the season without Cup time at Addington Raceway, one of the great events on the New Zealand sporting and social calendar. It’s always been a week of celebration for the city of Christchurch, with Addington hosting two days of spectacular racing, entertainment, fashion, food, and beverages on 8 and 11 November. Ōtautahi will host a fast-paced world series in early November, a modified version of netball featuring two-point goals, double-goal power plays, five players-a-side and shortened quarters. Our national team, the Fast5 Ferns, has dominated the world competition since 2009, winning seven titles. The world’s top six ranked teams (from Australia to Jamaica) will arrive and compete at Christchurch Arena, so get dressed up, and come to dance and celebrate with your team, family, and friends. Did you make it along to any of our city’s cultural treats for September?

I kicked it off with WORD, and I was lucky to attend several events, with An Evening with Lianne Moriarty an absolute stand out. As the month continued, the CSO came out to shine with Verdi Requiem, an impassioned opera which seemed a fitting way to remember the late Queen. Then came the moment I had been waiting over a year for – Matilda The Musical at the Isaac Theatre Royal. I was thrilled for the local theatre crew Showbiz to wow audiences once again. It is something they do so well, and they had been interrupted by Covid several times when trying to perform Matilda. It was a full circle moment, with opening night falling in the same week as pandemic mandates were lifted.

I say this to our local artists and performers that have made it through these past two years, you’ve sacrificed a lot, and for that, we owe you an ovation, a ‘bravo’, a thank you.

You’d be forgiven if you couldn’t name a New Zealand ‘blues’ group. That’s why I was thrilled to come across Wellingtonian band Sea Mouse. Though not strictly a ‘blues band’ – they’re known for rock – their latest EP has an incredibly bluesy feel, with hardhitting guitar slapping and vocals from the recesses of the soul that B.B King would be proud of. Tasting History with Max Miller is the YouTube series you didn’t know you needed. It is guaranteed to satiate your historical hunger. Max takes the viewer through some of history’s most interesting meals and presents excellently researched contextual stories of the times of the dish. Though he admits some should stay where they were, he occasionally comes across a gem.

ROOT TO STEM

There are some books that are read once and then relegated to an overflowing bookshelf. Plantopedia is not one of them. The time has come to say “see you later” to some of your favourite exhibits at Canterbury Museum. The Museum is about to embark on a major and much-needed redevelopment which will see it move out of its buildings for up to five years. From mid-October, Museum staff will be progressively closing galleries to pack them down. Many favourite exhibits, like the Christchurch Street and Fred and Myrtle’s Pāua Shell House, will return in the redeveloped Museum, and a temporary Museum will pop up in the central city next year – but it could be some time before you see your favourites again so make sure you stop by soon to wish them well on their travels!

Innovate

Artist Askew One

Disguised amid fluid and merging reams of red, blue, black, and white, the word ‘innovate’ is revealed in stacked layers, the letters providing a structural quality as the ribbons of colour seemingly melt and pull in different directions across the wall. Innovate was painted on the Ara Institute of Canterbury’s campus by Elliot ‘Askew One’ O’Donnell, one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated and accomplished urban artists, in June 2021. The artist, raised in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland but now based in the United States, painted the mural while in Ōtautahi for Continuum, a joint exhibition with his wife, photographer Jasmine Gonzalez, at Sydenham’s Fiksate Gallery. The glitching mural extends Askew One’s investigation of the power of words and the confluence of digital imagemaking techniques and analogue processes, ideas borne out of his grounding in graffiti. Celebrating the importance of innovative thinking in education, the artist also warns of the dangers of constant innovation, imbuing the work with a dichotomous quality, one of daring beauty and fragile combustion.

BE THE CHANGE

In just a few months, a Christchurch school’s new innovation and entrepreneurship programme has seen students create an educational Māori culture social media lens with over 150,000 global engagements, pilot a wāhine in tech programme for Deloitte, and assist a health tech start-up company’s virtual reality therapy app.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has this year launched RangiX, a programme dedicated to arming its Years 7 to 13 students with future-focussed skill sets, tool sets and mindsets to thrive in an increasingly complex and dynamic world.

Centred around the three pillars of innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship, RangiX runs across pre-existing classroom subjects, standalone classes, co-curricular options, and online learning modules – all with a close tie to real-world opportunities and commercial and tertiary partnerships.

The programme at the independent day and boarding school is headed by Owen Flattery, the school’s recently appointed Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He joins the school from Melbourne, where he drove the digital strategy at Lauriston Girls’ School.

“RangiX is about teaching students how to innovate to solve problems and to be

able to create those solutions using digital capabilities,” he says.

“This is underpinned by the understanding that as the world becomes more technological, what becomes more valuable are the human skills and traits that bind us – communication, creativity and collaboration; empathy, trust, courageousness, resilience and kindness, and leadership and managing others – and RangiX aspires to develop these skills in our students.”

Principal Dr Sandra Hastie says RangiX addresses a crucial element of modern education: “We don’t know what jobs many of our students will do when they leave school because they are yet to be invented.”

“But,” she says. “What we do know is that students need to be creative thinkers, have the ability to see a problem and a solution and the ability to deal with failure and not give up and to develop resilience.”

RangiX is another way the school prepares students for life after high school in an increasingly complex world. As well as learning about innovative thinking and problem solving, students will learn about essential technologies, and crucially, RangiX connects students with industry and tertiary partners to create real-world opportunities for students.

SMALL STEPS, BIG DREAMS

Christchurch entrepreneur Hannah Hardy-Jones has been recognised for her change-making work in tech and mental health. She was awarded a grant to develop a programme that allows better support for women on their cancer journey.

Launched earlier this year, the ‘She Sets The Pace’ community grant by car brand Jaguar recognises changemakers and people challenging the status quo by providing funding for their ventures. In Hannah’s case, the $10,000 prize will go towards The Kite Program, a mental health app publisher that creates apps to support groups, organisations, and causes.

The Kite Program aims to overcome mental health challenges, especially for women. It highlights the gender-based obstacles that prevent people from receiving the help and support they need by creating highly specific app programmes. These include services for eating disorders, maternal mental health, veterinarians, HR professionals, and an offering for small businesses, to name a few.

Hannah started Kite due to her own difficult mental health journey with postpartum bipolar disorder following the birth of her daughter in 2013. Using her HR experience, she created a solution to support mums through the challenges of motherhood – an app was the perfect way to reach as many women as possible.

“Since the success of Kite for Mums, we have launched versions of the app into new markets and focus areas, particularly within corporate wellbeing. All are based on the Kite app philosophy of small achievable steps each day.”

As people move through the app, they select the Kite modules that apply to them, and they

receive one quick, practical and achievable task, idea or activity to complete that day.

When stressed and overwhelmed, our ability to retain and apply ideas and suggestions is limited, so breaking it down into small steps is effective, according to Hannah.

“It was important that I was open and transparent about my mental health journey when I launched Kite. When I was unwell, I couldn’t find anyone who was thriving or who was able to manage their illness successfully – all I could find were heartbreaking stories. I wanted to show that it is possible to live a full life and come out the other side. It has been my mission to break down the stigma of mental health and be open about my experience wherever I can.”

Hannah mentions how incredibly exciting it is to be chosen as the first recipient of the Jaguar She Sets the Pace grant.

“Being a sole female founder of a tech start-up can be challenging, and winning this grant was wonderful validation for me, personally. I love what Jaguar is doing with challenging conventions for women, and these values fit so well with my own values and that of our wider organisation. The grant has allowed us to start working on some epic projects in the mental health space, plus being able to drive a beautiful I-PACE has just been the icing on the cake and a great way to experience an EV.

“No matter what you are going through right now, there is always hope and always a way through. I would never have thought I could start a mental health tech company based on my mental health and being a mum of small children, but anything is possible. It just takes small steps each day to get to your dream.”

KILLER LOCATION

Jeremy Stevens is the director and shareholder of one of our city’s only rooftop bars, Mr Brightside – named after the song by the global chart-topping rock band, The Killers. Mr Brightside is right in the heart of the city – the jewel in the crown of the recently refurbished Public Trust building. This tailor-made space has stellar views across the city, where you can see The Terrace, the Avon, snow-capped mountains, and Cathedral Square from the back. The roof retracts for the warmer nights, so patrons can quite literally feel on top of the world. With the ability to host close to 150 people, Jeremy slyly describes the location as a venue “suitable for the Canterbury environment”. Winter means the space transforms to be almost completely covered.

“The last view of the sun on the terrace means sundown at Mr Brightside is incredibly special.”

Jeremy is also the general manager of the Aikmans Hospitality group – this includes Aikmans Bar, Café Valentino, and Brigittes of Merivale. He describes the lofty aim of bringing Mr Brightside to our city as “financially ridiculous”.

“Back in 2018, I viewed the building for a possible ground-floor restaurant and basement prohibition-style bar. During the viewing of the building, I was caught up in the view from the small add-on office on the roof. With further discussion with the landlord, we converted the office into what is now Mr Brightside.”

Being a historic building meant some of his ideas for the structure were a challenge, but the final offering gives a pavilion-like look from the street and a well-sheltered area for all seasons. The added glass roof inserts and opening section give the perfect amount of light and shade.

Jeremy mentions that word of mouth was key for the success of the bar and meant there was zero need for paid publicity.

“I posted once on social media about our opening, and ever since, the venue has been busier than we expected.”

It seems things aren’t slowing down, coming up to its second year anniversary.

After initially being open from 3pm, there’s now a lunch offering daily. The team has grown to close to 20 people, and they all pride themselves on quick, professional service. The bar is an R20 environment, a decision patrons support.

“It just gives 18 and 19 years olds a venue to look forward to in the future!”

A partnership with Ecospirits provides the bar with five-litre refillable tanks, including Roots Gin and Plantation Rum.

“Not only do we save on trash bills, but using the eco-spirit system eliminates the use of glass bottles saving 30 grams of emissions for every cocktail made.”

So what is next in the summer pipeline for Mr Brightside? A new line-up of food and cocktails, a Halloween-themed party, sponsored by Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and more leading up to Xmas. An expansion into other parts of the country hasn’t been ruled out, nor have new venues in Christchurch.

Jeremy says you will have to watch this space closely.

When asked if The Killers were scheduled in for a cheeky after-show beverage at the bar following their local performance this month, Jeremy said, “I wouldn’t be able to tell you if they were! You’ll just have to come and see for yourself.”

PITCH PERFECT AT HAGLEY OVAL

Few people know the unique character of the wicket block at Hagley Oval better than Rupert Bool, who helped build the ground in 2012 and has had a decade of experience managing the turf there. Getting the pitch at its best is a big responsibility, particularly for big international games, like the BLACKCAPS vs India ODI coming up at the end of November.

“You know there will be millions of people watching all around the world, so there is that pressure to prepare the pitch to the highest standard possible for the players, to ensure it’ll be a good game,” Rupert says. “It’s the preparation you’re putting in two to three months beforehand that makes a good pitch.”

This month (October) sees the start of the T20 international tri-series, with Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Pakistan batting it out at Hagley through to the final on 14 October. Hagley Oval is also hosting men’s and women’s domestic competitions this summer.

Whether it’s Canterbury domestic cricket or an international game, Rupert says the focus of the grounds team is always on producing a high-quality surface. It’s a constant and complex business getting good grass cover in the right condition at the right time. “You’re always doing different things: managing moisture, applying fertiliser, grooming the grass, and rolling. It’s a cumulative process that involves a lot of effort and attention to detail.”

Rupert grew up in Rangiora and went to high school at Christchurch Boys’, honing his

love for cricket along the way. He got his start in turf management as a casual helper during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln in 2000. “I knew I was a rubbish cricketer, but I wanted to be involved in the sport. The experience at Lincoln really sparked my interest in turf management, so I then went straight into a three-year apprenticeship with New Zealand Cricket.”

Before returning to Christchurch in 2012, Rupert worked at the cricket ground Seddon Park in Hamilton. His career in grounds management now spans 20 years. A satisfying career highlight earlier this year was managing the turf at Hagley Oval for the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, the same tournament that originally kicked off his interest in the field in 2000.

Rupert says the wicket block at Hagley Oval is exceptionally well built and rates the quality of the playing surface and outfields as world-class. Hagley Oval has received accolades for the quality of its pitch, acknowledged over the past decade at NZ Cricket turf management awards.

The block’s 11 cricket pitches are made from Kakanui clay, covered with ryegrass … and not any old ryegrass either. “It’s a type of ryegrass (Spartacus) that’s bred for sports turf. It’s grown from very high-end seed that we’re lucky to have available in New Zealand.”

Having served at Hagley Oval for 10 years, Rupert has recently stepped into a broader role as Hagley Park Manager, with part of the role mentoring young up-and-comers starting their own sports turf careers.

FAST5 IS BACK!

World Netball and Netball New Zealand have announced that the FAST5 Netball World Series is returning to the international calendar, with New Zealand hosting the fast-paced tournament for the next three years, with Christchurch centre stage.

FAST5 netball is a modified version of the game featuring multiple-point shots, doublepoint power plays, five players-a-side, and shortened quarters. It can be more dynamic, as it features a few rule changes, and there are typically a lot of rolling subs due to the speed of the game and the area players need to cover.

Our Kiwi teams have carved a commanding legacy, winning the inaugural FAST5 Netball World Series in 2009 and holding the title seven times.

New Zealand last hosted the tournament in 2014 in Auckland, and this time around, six of the world’s top-ranked teams will play the condensed version of the game from 5-6 November in Ōtautahi at the Christchurch Arena. New Zealand is to host the tournament for the next three years, and this agreement will see Christchurch as the host city for 2023.

Speaking on the announcement, World Netball CEO Clare Briegal said, “New Zealanders are some of the most passionate and knowledgeable netball fans in the world, and I feel it’s fitting to see our fun, festive tournament return to New Zealand at this time.”

“The FAST5 Netball World Series has had incredible success and a strong following, and we’re looking forward to seeing that growth continue over the next three editions.”

Jennie Wyllie, Netball New Zealand’s chief executive, said they were thrilled to be hosting the FAST5 Netball World Series and were looking forward to welcoming some of the game’s best international players to New Zealand.

“We’re really excited to be hosting this fast-paced tournament again – it is a real celebration of netball, on and off the court. Due to Covid-19, there have been challenges with delivering netball recently, so what better way to welcome the return of FAST5 athletes than by hosting this event and welcoming the world’s best netballers to our shores,” she said

In another significant move, the FAST5 tournament will take the opportunity to increase its reach and include male exhibition matches on the schedule.

“This is another opportunity to showcase men’s netball on the international stage and also highlight the strength of our youth teams, utilising this condensed version of netball,” Jennie said.

Jane Watson, business owner, new mother, and international netballer, has recently been named in the ’22 and ’23 squad for Canterbury’s team, the Trident Homes Tactix. She is excited for the return of FAST5 to Christchurch and her own comeback to the sport.

“I cannot wait to be playing netball again. I’ve been slowly working my way back into the game after the birth of my daughter, Tia. Having this break has ignited a wee fire in me, which is so exciting. It’s going to be a challenge to get back, but I’m up for it”.

The Jew’s-harp is an instrument that boys are particularly fond of twanging, but the music that is generally got out of it is not nice.”

The ancestor of the mouth organ, the Jew’s Harp, is one of the oldest instruments in the world. By the time European whalers, traders, and sailors brought it to Aotearoa New Zealand, the instrument had been in use in various forms throughout the settled world for millennia.

Neither a harp nor of Jewish origin, the name is believed by some to be a corruption of the French “jeu-troupe”, meaning “toy-trumpet”.

One of the most famous stories of a Jew’s Harp in European history concerns a soldier in the service of the 18th Century Prussian King Frederick the Great. On guard under the King’s window, he played the Jew’s Harp masterly and impressed Frederick, who gave him his discharge and 50 gold coins.

In 1826, a German pastry chef further “elevated a vulgar toy to the rank of a beautiful and perfect musical instrument.” Karl Eulenstein modified his instruments

and composed melodies. Playing “sixteen to twenty different harps, substituting one for the other”, he could reach four octaves. However, playing the Jew’s Harp severely damaged Eulenstein’s teeth. When his last undamaged upper tooth broke off, he turned to his guitar and music teaching for his living.

Māori had their version of the Jew’s Harp, called rōria and made of kareao (supplejack), wood, or bone. Rōria have a slender tongue and are plucked to create sound through vibration. The mouth is used to manipulate the sound and produce various resonances. Consequently, the European Jew’s Harp was popular among Māori, who were readily able to master it.

Okains Bay Museum has three Jew’s Harps in its collections. One is from the Ngāi Tahu kāika at Pā Bay, found with several items of European origin among a collection of ‘classic’ Māori material excavated there in the late 1950s. It is reflective of the period of cultural encounters that shaped the lives of Ngāi Tahu on Banks Peninsula in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

A spring reboot

Idon’t think there’s any city in the world that celebrates spring as beautifully as our own. There’s a reason Christchurch is referred to as the ‘Garden City’, and a drive down Harper Avenue or a quick glimpse of the blossom trees around Hagley Park merely confirms this.

It seems the city forefathers really looked to the future when they planted such incredible specimens way back in 1936 on Arbor Day.

These and the massive drifts of spring bulbs evident throughout our parks and gardens rival some of the plantings I’ve seen overseas, including Japan with its blossom and the Netherlands with its bulbs. Remember that both these countries have international reputations for their displays. Tourists and locals alike are in a constant state of rapture because of our botanical treasures.

But I don’t want to sound like someone delivering a ‘20 things to do in spring’ article, preferring instead to think about the two or three things I intend to do now that the weather’s warming up and the spring property market’s about to launch. It’s been a long, unsettled winter, and it’s a relief to come into the warmer months.

Most importantly, I want to spring clean everything!

In my environment at work, it’s time to repaint areas that need refreshing, reupholster chairs, give the outside a spruce-

up and get rid of the mountains of extra stuff that’s found its way into nooks and crannies you never knew existed. I’m giving fair warning to everyone: if it’s past its best, it’s past its time. Then it’s going to be our home’s turn. Having recently read a rather brutal book on clutter busting by Brooks Palmer, I’m going to endeavour to let go of items that we don’t need. The rationale is that it’s said to be liberating given you’re less likely to be weighed down by objects you no longer use or even like and, believe it or not, all of us have things that fit this description. Duplicates – make that triplicates – of some items for that ‘just in case moment’ that never arrives, books that no one has time to read, and magazines that can now go to a new life in medical waiting rooms.

Given that I sit about as far away as possible from being a minimalist, tending instead towards hoarding, it’s likely to be a trying, if not vexing, experience.

But, as spring is all about regeneration, I’m going to embrace the idea even if I can’t follow through with all the actions.

For the rest of spring, I’m going to do what an Australian friend of mind does, and that’s to wear happy colours, floral ‘ensembles’ (her word), and no more – or make that not so much! – black.

It’s spring in the best city in the world, and after an interminable winter, it’s time for all of us to get out and enjoy life.

A good egg

Ifind it hard to imagine a culinary world without the existence of eggs. These life-giving bundles dubbed ‘the everyday super food’ are one of those rare, cornerstone ingredients that just keep on giving. The simple fact is that an egg can begin, entirely encapsulate, or finish a meal.

We have so many delicious things to thank our (preferably free range) laying hens for. From the trivial and seductive entertainment of a runny yolk, the visual appeal of pink pickled eggs (made using beetroot), to the challenging dark hue of the Chinese Century egg – where eggs are preserved for weeks in a salt and clay mix.

I’m forever fascinated by the structural integrity of eggs. The way the white has the ability to produce foam on a whiskey sour, lift chocolate mousse to ethereal heights, and provide strength and subtlety to the perfect pavlova. Inside lies the yolk, the gooey, unctuous pocket of gold. A vibrant bundle that delivers richness, colour, and viscosity to hollandaise, mayonnaise, lemon curd, custard, crème brûlée, and traditional carbonara.

My go-to eggs are jammy. Boiled for approximately six minutes (medium-sized) and then plunged into cold water, resulting in a soft yolk that is jiggly and luscious, held together by a taut white exterior. I like them on toast, sprinkled with sea salt flakes, draped with an anchovy, a dollop of chilli oil, or a blob of Kewpie mayo. I love how the slightly loose yellow centre creates a sauce of its own, leaving a puddle to be mopped up. Ramen eggs are another favourite, highly seasoned

umami bombs that sit overnight in a sweet soy liquid with vinegar and spices.

I often crave the luxurious swirl of a well-seasoned scramble, cooked quickly yet patiently, by pulling the eggs towards the centre of the pan and repeating ’til *just* set. To be eaten swiftly, before they overcook, cool down or congeal. But regardless of the time of day, when I eat eggs, I almost always feel good.

Nutritionally eggs are an excellent (and affordable) protein source, containing vitamins A, B, D, and E, alongside minerals from amino acids, sodium, iodine, selenium, and calcium to omega-3 fats and antioxidants. It’s this diverse nutrient offering and combination that makes eggs so unique, and it would require lots of different foods to gain the same nutrient cocktail.

Eggs are ubiquitous in brunch, proven by their compulsory presence on menus and the obsession with a certain dish involving eggs on eggs. The beloved Eggs Benedict, where poached eggs are smothered in a buttery egg yolk sauce cooked gently over heat until thick and creamy. Controversial, maybe, but I don’t always love an eggs bene. I often find it too much, too rich, and dare I say, too eggy.

However, the power to sway me lies in the hollandaise, one that leverages enough acidity to balance out the butter and the yolk. I appreciate when there is plenty of lemon or vinegar and have enjoyed versions involving chipotle, tarragon, the nutty burnt butter, and even one infused with espresso. After many bene attempts, I’ve learnt it helps to order hollandaise on the side, to control the richness you endure.

Eggs with a difference

There’s no denying the allure and delight of perfectly cooked eggs on toast. It’s the literal bread and butter for the brunch trade of most cafés. But in the name of research, our food editor Kate Underwood was determined to scour the city for egg dishes offering something a little different.

If there’s shakshuka on a menu, I’m ordering it. At Hello Sunday, it’s served in a sizeable cast iron pan with tomatoes, capsicum, onion, and eggs nestled within. The generous portion is scattered with marinated feta, almonds, and Egyptian dukkah, alongside housemade flatbreads ready to be ripped and dipped to mop up gooey yolks and unctuous sauce. This quirky brunch spot has been a city go-to for years, with its loud, lively atmosphere housing different spaces to exist. The plentiful, crowd-pleasing menu involves brioche French toast and a popular braised beef cheek hash. On a balmy spring day, it’s worth sitting out back in the private courtyard for some al fresco dining and a side of sun with your eggs.

Blink, and you could easily miss Westend Stories. Just a step and a hop from the Avon, the green oasis is a favoured central city lunch spot for visitors and office workers upstairs. It was the smoked salmon bruschetta that secured my stomach real estate, essentially a poached egg on sourdough supported by cold smoked salmon, beetroot hummus, avocado, tamari sunflower seeds, and a welcomingly tangy salsa verde. Inside the large modern space are people from all walks of life, some sipping espresso martinis, others ordering smoked cheese truffle burgers or fried cauliflower tacos. Like me, you’ll leave satisfied and enticed by the lush-looking treats, hopefully with a slice of hazelnut chocolate torte (gf) on hand to devour later.

Just a stone’s throw from Sumner beach is Niche, an eatery for all, where delicious food and relaxed seaside vibes abound. Tempted by ‘The Indecisive’, aka the big breakfast, the chilli scramble with potato rosti and Calabrian sausage, I was eventually swayed by a dish called ‘Planted’. A celebration of poached eggs and vegetables draped in a Kolkata-style coconut curry sauce. Tasty, fragrant, and nourishing, it is livened up the roasted cauliflower, mushrooms, spinach, and crunchy jeera papad or cumin pappadom on the side. There’s something here for every appetite and all the Allpress coffee you desire. I love that you can order a pancake stack with a choice of toppings, but next time I’m going back for the housemade pies.

Forever drawn to the most obscure or unique sounding item on a menu, it takes a special dish to secure a repeat order from my curious appetite. The Kimchi Rice Omelette from Child Sister gets me every time. Served dramatically sizzling on a hot plate, the moat of fluffy eggs is topped with a mountain of spicy, vivid red, kimchi-spiked rice mixed with pork belly slices (or mushrooms), showered in Grana Padano, and finished with a blob of Kewpie

mayo. It’s flavour-forward, satiating, and evident by the number of people eating it all around you – extremely delicious. Since joining the Christchurch dining scene, Child Sister has won appetites and loyal friends, taking out café of the year in 2021. Conveniently located on Manchester Street across from the famous Margaret Mahy playground, the industrial, open-air space makes it a hot spot for mums with prams, family gatherings (they take

bookings for groups) or work meetings. With strong brews from Lyttelton Coffee Co, the cabinet offers loaded sandwiches and treats I always want, like lolly cake and Basque cheesecake. The menu is influenced by Korean ingredients, including dishes like gochujang meatballs and a kimchi cheese toastie. I’ve spent many hours tapping away at my laptop here and can tell you that someone will always order the fried chicken and often honey butter waffle fries.

Build your perfect cheeseboard

With summer fast approaching, our days are becoming longer, and sunshine and outdoor entertaining are just around the corner. Our friends at Barrys Bay have shared a few tips with us on how to build the perfect cheeseboard – filled with a range of textures, ages, and flavour profiles.

Something mild

Not everyone loves a strong cheese, so try including a cheese that is approachable, like Barrys Bay Havarti. This cheese is extremely smooth and milky sweet.

A blue

Not for the faint-hearted – give your guests

a cheese powerhouse! We love Barrys Bay Peninsula Blue for its big flavour, finished with a hint of sweetness. Try this with honeycomb or a ginger biscuit, and you will not be disappointed.

Platter with punch

We eat with our eyes, so you always want your cheeseboard to look striking. Use a range of colours and textures to draw people’s attention. We love Barrys Bay Wood Smoke for the rich, rustic orange colour and the Peppered Havarti for the great texture! Both are very punchy on a platter.

Hard and mature

A SEASON FOR NEW LEEVES

The past year has been quite the journey for Red Eight at Portstone, so it is fitting to introduce a new name for the café, Leeves at Portstone.

Owner Stephanie, who started the original Red Eight in Kaiapoi, chose the new name to reflect the current location at 465 Ferry Road’s Portstone Garden Centre. She describes this as a “fresh approach” for the café.

“Leeves ties in with the garden centre and is also a play on words, as it’s also a nod to my surname, Reeves!”

The café’s cabinet is one of the best in town, with all food being made on-site using fresh, quality ingredients. This shows in the delicious flavours and presentation.

She also muses on Leeve’s signature dish and states that a “café is judged on its Eggs Benedict”.

For a dose of fun and whimsy, there is ‘Fancy Pants Fridays’ at Leeves. This is where Steph and the team really turn on the fancy! The Facebook page announces on Thursday evenings what the four to five extra treats will be, and then from 9am, the deliciousness emerges from the kitchen.

“It could be freshly cooked doughnuts, topped with Italian meringue and chocolate pastry crème, or cinnamon buns with cream cheese frosting. Our canelé – a delicious French custard patisserie treat – has been popular, and our sponge drops create quite a stir!”

Leeves locale is enviable, with its lush greenery to sit amongst. The outdoor seating area is tranquil and currently perfumed by all the Daphne plants. You can sit in the sunshine or shade and bring your four-legged friends.

Leeves is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 3.30pm, and weekends from 9am to 4pm.

Inever wanted the traditional flower shop. I wanted to bring my flowers to people, with a real focus on sustainable floristry and doing things differently, so a flower truck it was! Randy was listed for $500, with a tow bar, a healthy-looking body and engine coupled with a warrant and registration. I simply couldn’t go past him.

I told the seller I couldn’t beat the other offers on the table. This didn’t sit well with the lovely man. In the conversation we had the night prior, I’d told him what I planned for this wee beaut of a panel van, and he really wanted to see this idea come to fruition. Kindness cannot be understated. He insisted I have the car for free! I couldn’t believe it. My business idea was going to come together, and Randy was going to get a whole new life as the Rogue Florals flower truck!

The back was empty but had so much useful space. Matt and Dan’s Camper Vans understood my vision and created the perfect pull-out flower stand. Now that Randy is finally ready for markets, we are inseparable. The best part is being able to work with my family and show my brother Liam the tips and tricks of floristry.

It must have been the car to have because while the wives are grabbing the flowers, the husbands are walking around Randy telling me about how they used to have one.

Astley and bubbles

Many of you will be getting ready for Cup and Show week in an appropriately Cup and Show week-way, perhaps by getting a spray tan or putting on something that shows your midriff. Knock yourselves out. Sure, I’ve had my fair share of dancing on the tables, but these days if I have a wine too many, I’m more likely to tidy up the laundry or do some gardening while listening to Fur Patrol or Rick Astley. Of course, being in the house bus with no garden and a pantry the size of a shoebox, that isn’t really an option, except for the Fur Patrol and Rick Astley.

One Cup Day several years ago, a group of us planned to meet at the track for a “day on the lawn”, but I couldn’t get a taxi. So, I sat in the garden with a bottle of Lindauer, and after two glasses and no lunch, I texted that I couldn’t make it. I then proceeded to weed the vege garden. Rob got home from work to a fabulous-looking garden and strains of Never Gonna Give You Up belting out around the neighbourhood.

It is a special time for me in one way, though. Our first baby was due on Show Day 1998, but she arrived slightly early on 6 November, encouraged to join us by the fireworks she would’ve heard the evening before.

Not wanting to appear a complete curmudgeon, Cup and Show week does herald in fresh energy, a sense that summer is almost here, and there’s no doubt it’s great for the local economy.

Finally, a word of advice for those who like a flutter or two – bet on the horse that has a poo just before the race; it’ll be lighter and run faster.

“Since I was about six, they put me in dresses. I just didn’t want to get out of them, that’s all. Yes, my cousins dressed me up, and I enjoyed it.

“It’s interesting when you look back on life because, as I say, I’m 80 now. I’ve been in and out over the years. Sydney, I lived as a woman there for so many months. I’ve done it all my life. But when I was 79, I said, ‘oh well, that’s enough of this’. So that’s where I’m at.

“The only thing I kind of regret, and I do regret it, because I like being honest. It’s too hard telling lies. But when I married my wife 54 years ago, I didn’t tell her I had a problem. It took a couple of years to get it out of me. She said, ‘what the hell’s the matter with you?’ I said, ‘I just want to put on a dress. But of course, if I had told you that before, would you have married me?’

But we have never been so much in love, and life is rolling on. She loves me as I am, and that’s terrific.

“I had my first perm yesterday, and for my 80th birthday, my wife bought me a wedding band, so that was nice. It took me two months [and I had] to be patient, but now I’ve got my driver’s license in the name of Patricia Hales. I’ve got my IDs. Right, I’m all organised.

“I’ve got a few projects. Of course, paint’s a new one at $4 a litre. People come along, bring their paint in; out it goes, and everybody wins. You see what I mean? I love it.

“And, of course, my library’s whistling along. Yes. Four or five years now. So that’s good. It’s a service. We got them all free. That gives me a lift. Everybody wins. Everybody has to win. Beautiful. And I meet all sorts, which is lovely.”
