From the mundane to the exclusive, the design conundrum covers the entire stretch. Making homes, offices, public spaces, entertainment places work on the basis of form and function. Materials and products surrounding them are ever changing in their form, texture, durability and the challenge is always in using the best option for the client. Factors like budgets and space constraints add to the free reign a designer can have in moulding spaces. We collect projects which represent a cross section of these concerns. For ultimately we speak to provide ideas for design. We also seek to celebrate a good design and beautiful outcomes for clients. We bring to you a stunningly simple yet alluring space that uses local materials and is sustainable. Ar Hiren Patel transforms this centre for the underprivileged out of its grime and squalor into a haven of peace and quiet. The Global Resident by Goddard Littlefair presents a central London penthouse apartment that spells beauty and functionality at par for the clients. We explore a commercial space for the silk makers of Surat which seeks to carve an identity of its own. Ar. Shailesh. N . A Community Centre par excellence
A public space project is always a challenge. For one the brief is beyond the individual and delves into the realm of public needs and offers utilities to a large scale of people. The constraints on budgets and space notwithstanding public space projects do offer a large palate to a designer to engage and offer solutions. Here we take a closer look at a community center located in an underprivileged urban area. Usually such places tend to be unhygienic and unclean and merge with the eye sore grim reality of the urban squalor in which they are located. The concept was to find such place and to use it positively by reforming and restructuring it. It was to be a place of learning and sharing. The existing complex, comprised of several structures including some religious structures. Overall the essence of the area and place had to be maintained.

The design team added a few more structures in this complex to create a community-learning place for children. The idea was to create world-class community space with all local constraints, educate the locals to build the place and run the learning classes for children. While designing and conceptualizing the entire complex, one thing became clear that the architecture itself should become the ‘Text book’ for children who would be using the community center. Thus it is focused on sound space planning, use of materials, and use of recycled material to imbibe the sustainable aspect. In doing so it became evident for the design team that many houses in the neighbourhood were quite sustainable due to their constraints of finance and space. While the same constraints existed for this community project as well, but technology was used effectively to counter those.
The existing building was left intact, it was just modified/improved wherever required. This saved nearly half the cost of the building compared to creating a completely new building. The team used local materials that were cost effective and also resulting in considerable amount of energy saving. Screen walls and windows were designed out of waste materials such as glass bottles and bamboo. Simple yet striking these screens add to the aesthetics of the place. The entire complex now exudes a sense of pride for the community, which was once neglected area. The two existing religious structures in the compound continue to flourish around the new development without disturbing them. Thus the whole compound has become a symbol of religious harmony, even the local name for the place is ‘Ram-Rahim Tekro’ which means the hill of Lord Ram (Hindu God) & Allah (Muslim God).

Meet Hogarth Architects, founded by Claire and Ian Hogarth. The dynamite architecture duo who thus injected fun-architecture and colour into their own London family home. A 2,800-square-foot, West Kensington property complete with it’s own illuminated dance floor, DJ booth, hat-wardrobe, sauna, cinema and toast room is what the Hogarth home is all about.
Positioned at the end of a traditional mews, the Hogarth’s unique home is immediately realized upon entering. A welcome bullet-proof front door chosen not for it’s security benefits but for its inky-blue metallic gloss is not so much an entrance as a statement of intent. Personality has been injected into every room of the home. A colourful seating “pit” arranged in front of a movie screen in the basement is the family living room and on the wall a light

box by the artist Simon Tyszko bears the message: “I just can’t take it any more”. For a more relaxing vibe, there is a sauna and relaxing all white minimalist bedroom. Claire’s colouful array of statement hats, are housed in their own unique hat-wardrobe. The fun quirkiness of the Hogarth’s home can be seen throughout, with a courtyard garden filled with a fully operational outdoor fireplace.
34
The Design Source May - June 2017
Claire Hogarth states, “The idea for the dance floor came from how I love dancing, but I’m too old to go out.’ The 150 square-foot space satisfied the dreams of several other family members too, the couple’s 20-year-old son Gil, a budding music industry manager, got the D.J. booth he craved. Ian Hogarth, quotes, “I spend too much time at work compromising, and this is a house that was designed very much for us, fun, and our family.”

35
There’s a golden property rule that says you should avoid stamping your personality too hard on your home so as not to spook future buyers if you go to sell. But that ethos has been totally ignored here and the Hogarth’s home aspires to standout.
36
The Design Source May - June 2017
Beneath the house there is a full-scale dance floor, embedded with thousands of tiny pulsing lights, a professional-standard DJ booth and a sound system purchased from a nightclub in Birmingham.
The areas of practicality are of course downto-earth, the kitchen is a glossy white, with a nifty central island with a work surface that slides away to reveal the hob and create a breakfast bar in one swift move. There is also an air source heat pump and solar panels, which should mean no heating bills. The Hogarth’s home would not be completely without a toast room inbuilt into the kitchen to keep the crumbs minimal and dirt hidden away.
Kensington and Chelsea Council to give consent for a much more ambitious fourbedroom and four-storey alternative. The total cost of the works was £650,000 (of which £350,000 went on the basement), bringing their total investment to £1.06 million. The valuation is now way higher than the original quote, proving even the most extreme family home makeover has the potential to turn a serious profit.
When the Hogarth’s bought the property, there was already planning permission for a traditional house. It took 8-month’s of planning permission to persuade the The Design Source May - June 2017

Bringing Vaastu Home An uberluxe bungalow in Vadodara designed by Ar. Shailesh Parikh conforms to stringent vastu requirements, as it incorporates new age materials into the contemporary aesthetic.
40
The Design Source May - June 2017
Originating in vedic times, vastu shastra, the traditional Hindu system of architecture, prescribes principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry. The designs are intended to integrate architecture with the cosmos, the relative functions of various parts of the structure, and ancient beliefs – utilising geometric patterns (yantras), symmetry and directional alignments.
Ar. Shailesh Parikh has been responsible of a vast number of projects ranging from Commercial spaces, Residential projects, Educational institutes, Hospitality and Townships for the past 20 years.
With a new generation subscribing to the benefits of following these principles (which purportedly can affect health, peace, finances and general well-being), it is not at all uncommon for architects to be informed by clients that the structure will have to be vastu compliant. In fact, vastu consultants identify locations of entrances, bedrooms, kitchens and various other minute details, which the architect is required to adhere to in his design.
His firm Creative Design & Mgmt has established itself as one of the leading contemporary Indian Architectural and Interior Design firm. The Design Source May - June 2017
41
It was exactly these requirements which Ar. Shailesh Parikh was required to conform to, in his design of this two-level 16,000 sq ft bungalow, sitting on a 28,000 sq ft plot. Heavily vastu compliant down to the artwork, colours of walls and the materials used in different spaces, Ar. Parikh’s design takes all the restrictions within its stride.
42
The Design Source May - June 2017
But along with the diktats of vastu, the bungalow sits very much in today, with its aesthetic and all the conveniences of a contemporary lifestyle. Located in a gated community, the design is replete with a variety of materials to reflect the tastes of the client, who is in the real estate business.
‘As he was open to new ideas and experimentation, the aesthetic is a plush, upmarket one, with no skimping or cutting of corners. The finishes are bespoke and detailed, contributing to a visual complexity which is supported by the size of the spaces,’ says Ar. Parikh.
This is no ordinary home. Incorporating a home theatre, puja room, waterfall, bar and family rooms, all requirements have been anticipated and provided for, creating a luxurious experience. One of two kitchens is meant for the exclusive use of the lady of the house, sporting an island with a breakfast table. The Design Source May - June 2017
43
A giant wooden knife, spoon and fork adorn one wall, proclaiming the culinary function of the room. The other kitchen is utilised by the staff for routine heavy duty cooking. All the bedrooms have a private dressing area with walk-in wardrobes, connected to the en suite bath. The glass of the shower panels has customised film which echoes the pattern of the tiles on the walls. Throughout the spaces, the ceilings are customised in a combination of wood, POP and acrylic lighting, incorporating both coves as well as spots. Doors are in solid wood, with corian handles.

The master bedroom has a ‘floating’ bed with a leather headboard. The wall behind is clad with plywood to provide a 3D effect and also incorporates several small uplighters, the whole creating a rectilinear geometry. attention. With its childlike aesthetic, it is evident at one glance that this is a room for a young girl. ‘An unusual informal arrangement on the ground floor combines needs of both parents and daughter for an afternoon siesta in the same bedroom. A double bed shares the space with a colourful bunk bed, enabling togetherness and bonding for the family,’ says Ar. Parikh.
The walkway to the house is not a straight one. It negotiates a right angle and ascends several steps, before reaching the main door to the home. Two white marble swans flank the walkway at the road level. Further inside, three blue vases gushing water stand like sentinels alongside the walkway, enhancing the exotic ambience. A car shelter has a 21 ft cantilever in a tensile fabric.
The Design Source May - June 2017

The building is C-shaped and has an impressive double height glazed entrance, which opens into an explosion of space. The impression is aided and abetted by the glass which substitutes for walls in many areas, enabling views of other areas which invite exploration. The wooden ceiling above the dining table has acrylic lights in the spaces which existed in the trunk of the wood used, while a mural of hexagonal tiles on the adjoining wall is backlit for effect. A cantilevered staircase floats between two pillars, leading to the floor above. ‘The corridor on the first floor enjoys intense detailing, with suspended pergolas and a railing which is lit from the base,’ says Ar. Parikh. Patterns in the artworks are subtly echoed in the upholstery or cushions, creating a sense of repetition in the space.
48
The Design Source May - June 2017
Ashish Teli, who handled the landscape, was cognisant of the fact that the large windows should bring in the landscape, without compromising on privacy. ‘In the harsh summers of Vadodara, the trees provide natural shade, allowing the verandahs to see more use by the family. It’s really very difficult to fight the sun here. The staircase, particularly, has a rain forest feel with the extent of greenery visible. So although the trees are outside, they have been positioned to be viewed from the interior.’ Teli also points out that the plot has almost no compound wall, so the plants not only create a hedge, but their green shield also provides a sound barrier. ‘The garden is accessed from everywhere within the house, giving a feel of a private garden to each area. We sourced mature plants which were native to the area, so they would grow well. The effect is one of a lush, tropical forest,’ he adds.
In the event of a water scarcity, the clients have been told to stop watering the lawn. When the supply is restored, all it takes is 10 days for the lawn to become green again. As for the larger trees, ‘They’re smart,’ says Teli. ‘They only need watering for the first six months, after which the roots find their own sources. Some varieties like the champa and bougainvillea have to be parched in order to flower, so this works in our favour too. I’m happiest when clients call to say that the trees are flowering or bearing fruit.’ In fact, the garden is not mere eye candy – it is used for sit outs too by the family, weather permitting. Unfurling from the interior spaces, it has been incorporated seamlessly in the design. While most architects rue the limitations imposed by vastu on both form and function, Ar. Parikh has negotiated a happy marriage between the age old tenets and a contemporary sensibility, creating a design which comfortably straddles two worlds… to deliver just what the client wanted! The Global Resident
Luxury interior design specialists Goddard Littlefair have completed the design of a stunning central London penthouse apartment for an international family client, who divide their time between London and their principal Mediterranean home. The fourth-floor, lateral-living Belgravia apartment will serve as a base for the family in the British capital, with a master bedroom for the parents and a separate en-suite bedroom for each child (a teenage girl and an adolescent boy). The overall brief for the scheme was to be ‘bold, elegant, timeless and sumptuous’. For the client, as a Mediterranean family spending time in a slightly less hospitable climate, it was important that the interiors created a feeling of warmth and intimacy. Glamour was also a key requisite, with striking feature lighting throughout and a palette of smokier, darker textures than might be the London norm.

Martin Goddard Director & Co-Founder, Goddard Littlefair
Goddard Littlefair: Goddard Littlefair was founded by Martin Goddard and Jo Littlefair in 2012. Both founders have a reputation for innovation, creativity and exquisite detail in their chosen spheres of hotel, leisure, spa and residential design, having worked on many of the capital’s landmark hospitality and luxury residential projects. The company’s ethos is all about human responses to an environment - space, light, textures and finishes.
Jo Littlefair Director & Co-Founder, Goddard Littlefair
From the navy-and-gold ‘honey bee’ wallpaper of the boy’s bedroom, for example, to dark and moody voiles; metallic, reflective wall coverings and the slickness of the dark gloss wood doors and door frames. The result is a truly-tailored scheme, a home-from-home which responds to the client’s lifestyle requirements and ensures a warm sense of welcome every time they arrive in London. The clients had both strong views and clear aesthetic sensibilities, Goddard Littlefair, Director, Jo Littlefair explained. ‘However, as communication was in their second language, the early stages of the project involved lots of meetings, evolving the concept step by step to make sure the final environment was the perfect articulation of their wishes!’ The apartment benefits from good natural light, with windows and balconies all along the two outside walls. It is comprised of extensive living and dining spaces, which are separated but linked via a feature fireplace wall. There is also a kitchen, three en suite bedrooms and a guest powder room. Some of the brand new apartment’s finishes were already in place, having formed part of the base build of the apartment block - including the exquisite marble bathrooms - but as these finishes, along with the overall layout and space-plan, were designed by Goddard Littlefair, the integration of the new interior scheme presented no problems for the team. ‘On this project’, Jo Littlefair added, ‘we sought to strike a really refined balance between traditional luxury and contemporary and unique furniture and features, with almost every single item, from the dining table to the bedside tables to wall-coverings, bespoke-designed for the scheme, in order to ensure a feeling of true luxurious exclusivity and to articulate the look and feel the client required.’ The Design Source May - June 2017
53
Design Walk-through: The apartment is wrapped around a central lift lobby with the living and dining spaces taking up the full width of the righthand side of the plan, followed by the kitchen, the master bedroom and then bedrooms and bathrooms two and three. The apartment also has a guest cloakroom leading off the lobby/hall. Walls throughout feature specialist metallic and reflective wall coverings, with those in the living and dining spaces commissioned from a specialist maker in New York. Joinery, especially doorframes, is in a high-gloss lacquer finish. Flooring includes a suite of different marbles, such as Botticino for the entrance lobby border and Noir St Laurent for the kitchen and bathrooms. Oak parquet timber flooring is used for all other spaces, with added bespoke feature rugs. The artwork in the apartment was commissioned especially for this space. The entrance lobby features a console table and two brass-based Hardwick lamps with white shades from Vaughan. A dramatic overhead chandelier is formed of multi-layered, antique black and gold soft-edged metal triangles.
54
The Design Source May - June 2017
The sofa is in a soft gold velvet, whilst the seats are in a grey glazed linen with a contrasting surround (Arlington fabric in zinc) and a fine velvet trim. To the side of one of the armchairs is a small side table in aged gold leaf. Scatter cushions are a mix of plain and textured fabrics in shades of silvery-grey, anthracite and cream. The bench is in dark timber and upholstered in buttoned petrol blue velvet. A central, two-tier square coffee table is bespoke, with an antiqued glass top and brass-edge nail-head detail to the leather-wrapped edges and legs. The clear glass chandelier directly overhead is the four-tiered Pentagon 2 by Bella Figura from the Retro Murano Collection, whilst the lamp on the bespoke dark-timber side table (with a central-edge brass detail) features a smoke glass base and a pale blue silk shade.

The formal dining space, perfect for entertaining, seats ten around a bespoke dining table in highly-polished macassar ebony. The dining chairs are bespoke-designed by Goddard Littlefair and include eight upholstered dining chairs, with embroidered perimeter edges and two ‘Corset’ carver chairs at each end of the table, with patterned embroidery spines. A stand-out two-tier Pentagon rectangular chandelier over the table is by Bella Figura, from the Retro Murano Collection. The rug in the dining space is in cream wool with a viscose motif and a graduated border in a very pale blue. One entire wall of the dining space is made up of a hand-silvered antiqued mirror with bevelled detailing, to add to the room’s reflectivity, sense of space and drama, whilst a down-lit artwork at its centre breaks up any sense of uniformity. The opposite wall features a bespoke dark timber display and storage cabinet, with inbuilt down-lighting, to showcase the client’s glassware collection and conceal cutlery. A small console serving table alongside with decorative tassels and brass-lacquered handles is perfect for dispensing drinks. Behind the cabinet and console we see the specialist metallic wall finish, which extends on into the living space. A two-way fireplace with a remote-controlled fire and Botticino marble surround separates the dining space from the living space beyond. Above the fire on the dining room side of the wall is a circular mirror, with black waxed pigment edges and moongold leaf glass inserts. The specialist wall finish continues from the dining into the living space, which features further bespoke furniture: a sofa, two

armchairs and a bench, plus a stand-out full-wall starburst unit opposite, which conceals the television and the children’s gaming consoles. The unit is made from highly-polished macassar ebony veneer, with a satin brass trim and custom-made solid brass handles. To its side sits a two-table nest of circular-topped side tables in verre eglomisé and gilded iron.
The next room along is the kitchen, which also features highgloss lacquer finishes to match the bespoke joinery, plus a Carrara marble backsplash and worktop. All appliances are by Gaggenau and are integrated. For the bathrooms, Noir St Laurent marble is used for the master suite flooring, with Calacatta marble for the shower and walls. All the brassware was bespoke-designed for the overall apartment block by Martin Goddard of Goddard Littlefair for Perrin & Rowe. The master bathroom also features underfloor heating, a rain shower and a marble surround bath, designed by Goddard Littlefair. The master bathroom also features integrated coffer lighting and large-scale, stepped-edge verre eglomisĂŠ feature mirrors.

The girl’s bedroom features a wall covering to the headboard wall from Elitis in a purple faux metal leaf. Scatter cushions here are more decorative than elsewhere in the apartment, with silver trimming or featuring a Paisley design fabric. All the furniture is also bespoke in this room, in a palette of soft geometric greys and creams. There is a bespoke dressing table/desk, with drawers featuring crystal and nickel handles and an accompanying chair, upholstered in lavender and plum glazed linen with a buttondetail back. The desk light is the Kenton Desk Lamp by Artemis, with a purple shade and a hand-rubbed antique brass stand. One bedside table has four legs and a drawer, whilst the other has four legs and three drawers. Two bedside lights are the Mougins Column lamps from Vaughan in a bronze and clear crystal finish.

The main feature light in the room is the Waterfall 2 by Bella Figura in smoke glass and gold metal. The room also has bespoke loose-laid rug, with a linking, geometric overlay pattern. The girl’s bathroom has Fior di Bosco flooring with a Calacatta marble border and underfloor heating, plus a step-free rain shower with recessed lighting and downlighting below the sink.
The richly-luxurious master bedroom is a balance of traditionally masculine and feminine fabrics and colours, including a vinyl wall covering by Philip Jeffries in Metallic Raffia with a handapplied antiqued glaze for the panelling and skirting areas, plus gilt cream highlights to the ceiling coffers. Some metallic areas, hand-painted, have been added for increased reflection. The bedroom also features a 3-part Sahco hessian-fabric padded wall feature in ‘mink’ behind the bed, with a chamfered edge and a slightly waxed feel. To each side are panels in silvered, mirrored glass with artworks at their centre. The bespoke-designed loose-laid, hand-tufted wool rug is in navy and cream and features a circular motif, whilst the oyster-silk-lined bedspread is also bespoke, as is the bed frame itself. Scatter cushions are in blue, nickel and bronze. The bedhead is in leather, whilst a beautiful, bespoke bench at the foot of the bed is upholstered in raven velvet. A stunning overhead chandelier – the Arctic Pear chandelier from Ochre - weighs 56kg and features pear-shaped solid glass elements.

The curtains in the master bedroom are in a bronze silk, whilst the two bedside tables, in different shapes to avoid too much symmetry (one is square and one oval), have limestone and leather tops respectively. The lamps on the tables are the Diamond Table Lamp by Thomas Pheasant, whilst the lamp on the bedroom’s bespoke dressing table is the Eternity lamp from Best and Lloyd in crystal and nickel with a Chase Erwin silk-laminated shade. The bespoke dressing table is in a polished dark-stained timber with black horn drawer handles, with a bespoke upholstered chair. A Cocoon for the Silk makers
This is a corporate office in Surat for Art Silk Cloth Manufacturer’s Association (SASCMA). How different could it be from any other corporate or association office. Carving out a distinct identity within a structure called Resham Bhavan, the quintessential thread and cloth makers realm, this was the job cut out for the designers.

Silk fiber is produced by silkworms to form cocoons. Silk is strong, flexible, and fibrous, and is essentially a long continuous strand of protein. The architects have deconstructed the property of silk fibre in order to represent the silk industry. The structure of silk fibre is a triangular prism which allows the cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, thus producing different, shimmering colours. This property inspired the design firm to create a language for the space which acts as a skin in the working areas of the office.

The entrance screen is made out of currently outdated plastic bobbins which personifies the past significance of the industry. It also embodies with it a message of sustainability and recycling as form of art. All the spaces within are enhanced by the use of a legible and contemporary signages which intervene different elements into one. Dashes of earthly yellows and browns mix with otherwise achromatic palette, making the interiors stand out. The departments were broken down according to the hierarchy, staff numbers, functions, internal and external communication requirements, storage and equipment needs.

A Not So Ordinary Home
The apartment is an ordinary urban scape space, a longitudinal symmetry with its varied spaces for living, dining, cooking and sleeping juxtaposed within the outward parameters. It would be a one in many spaces which our cities breed. Yet the families which inhabit these uniform spaces are unique in their aspirations, likes, preferences and tastes. A designers job is to deliver that unique quality that will make this space owned and loved by its family.
Designers Archana and Amit Shah work closely with the client moods and preferences to cull out desired outcomes.

Archana Shah & Associates established by Principle Designer Archana Shah and Amit Shah, has been practicing as an architechture and interior design firm for over 2 decades. This apartment had a simple longitudinal geometry. The clients were simple in their needs and desires as well. A certain minimalist philosophy is at take here with a no frills simple outlook in all its spaces. The individuality is expressed through colors and textures. The Drawing room has a wall with niches for displaying the collection of the artifacts. A generous number of artifacts from artists Amit and Aneri Shah are in use here. Art outlook features in various crevices of the house. The light grey stencils on the dark grey concrete finish wall with square grooves creates a steady artistic look. The elegance of the grey particularly stands out. The stencil which signify an Indian artistic pattern gets repeated in the sofa upholstery creating a story and a pattern alike. Simple spatial techniques like the use of glass and other reflective surfaces to make the spaces look larger and wider. Glass apart of its spatial extravagance effect also acts as a partition which divides spaces and yet does not give the permanence of a brick wall. It creates an illusion of a temporary divide with a flexible overview. The color palettes of the living room are a study in subdued elegance. Greys matched with the browns of the wood to the cool blue of the dining chair upholstery, blend usefully and subtly. An added touch of stylish accents along with the subdued color palette complete the contemporary look of the place.

Immediately adjoining is the family lounge which dares with brighter shades of red and yellow, rich yet subdued marking the difference in mood and ambience. The outside part of the Lounge area had been covered inside to make the Lounge appear more spacious. The Lounge area was created by covering the outside space and hence creating a new guest bedroom (which was previously the Lounge area) for the family. The initial “Curved wooden and glass partition of the guest bedroom which was earlier the Lounge, was knocked down and a wardrobe divider was made, with half opening in the room and half in the passage and thereby saving more space. The layout has been planned so as to keep the home looking spacious and clutter free.

73
Hence the accents which reflect an Indian aesthetic stand out in the openness of the space. The wall behind the bed in the Master bedroom has a tile patterned, MDF finished in rustic texture. The bright red niche draws attention as one enter this room. The overall look of the house is smart and functional. The inclusion of potted plants serve as decor element while bringing in nature.

Water Demineralization Treatment Plant
Sewage Treatment Plant is an advanced technological mechanism which purifies contaminated substances in the sewage system. These substances undergo treatment in multiple processes – physical, chemical and biological – for contamination removal.
Demineralization is a physical process of removing mineral salts from water by using the ion exchange process. It uses speciallymanufactured ion exchange resins which provides ion exchange site for the replacement of the mineral salts in water with water forming H+ and OH- ions. Because the majority of water impurities are dissolved salts, deionization produces a high purity water that is generally similar to distilled water, and this process is quick and without scale buildup.
Water after being used in oil and gas industry, manufacturing industry and households etc., gets contaminated, thus need to go thru a rigorous process of purification treatment and is thereafter environmentally safe water.
