Modern cannot exist without the traditional and vice versa. The architect and the designer are often asked to marry the two. Traditional ideas of living couple merged with modern systems of architecture, modern materials and modern outlooks. The designer is called upon to juxtapose the needs of the old and aged with those of the young and restless all residing under one roof. The push and pull of the diverse perspectives and viewpoints gets resolved based on power plays many a times. However with the retro becoming the “in” thing this marriage between tradition and modern becomes a little less tough on the designers.

The Vaastu Principle

This 10,680 sqft residence proposed with the concept of villa embraces Indian ethos with an interesting mix in a modern setting. The concept follows the principles of Vastu, the ancient Indian science of energy flow and the region’s climatic conditions, where the requirement was to create five bedrooms, living room, a private family room, a kitchen, a dining space, home theatre and gym. In the western part of India, climate is a crucial feature, where natural light and ventilation is essential but not it’s roasting heat. Hence the design is an introvert type with courtyard in center as its focal point.

Dipen Gada, principal designer and founder of Dipen Gada & Associates (DGA), is a graduate in Civil Engineering from M.S University, Vadodara, Gujarat. Since its inception in 1993, DGA evolved from an exclusive interior design firm to a civil and architectural planning firm. Exposure, experience and honing of skills helped him create a boutique identity for his practice. The focus has been on innovation, architectural expressions and timeless designs. Classic minimalism is what is followed and maintained in each project with a stunning amalgamation between architecture, art and design. DGA aims for responsive and responsible architecture. Special emphasis is given to design with respect to climate, contextually solutions, use of design fundamentals and appropriate use of materials. There is a constant search of exploring the uncharted and concluding beyond the conventional. At the end, any design effort should rejoices the essence of being human. The work of DGA is featured regularly and has made an appearance in more than 100 National and International design journals and magazines. Dipen Gada also headed as the Chairperson of IIID, Vadodara Chapter from the year 2006-2008. The Design Source July - August 2017

Massing of the building is kept simple with subtle play of white and textured concrete. The entrance foyer at north-east intends to lead into the central courtyard directly, where all other spaces open to. Environmental transparencies at the ground level, created through courtyards and large openings helps in passively cooling of the internal spaces. The living room, kitchen and master bedroom are strategically located near the entry of the house for visual control and security reasons. Overall a neutral color palette of flooring from mirror finished green kota and river finished multi-colored kota is seen throughout the house. The playfulness of some bright colors of walls or furnishings adds a language to the interiors. The combination of these elements involves an ideal balance of modernity and tradition.

Implication of traditional design elements and following basic principles of Vastu like courtyard adds a spark to the design. It can be considered a luxurious amenity that gives the house a scenic beauty, privacy and an arena for outdoor entertainment. Plenty of light and cross interaction between family members on different floors is encouraged by this design element.

32

The Design Source July - August 2017

The skylight with pergola stimulates the inner space with varying moods of light and shadow which is created by the continuous movement of the sun. The enchanting vernacular jali and bench along with the traditional custom-made swing offers an Indian flavor to the house.

The staircase complements to the volume of the courtyard. A part of this courtyard and jali brings life to the basement area of the house too. Henceforth, the real spirit of the entire house lies in its courtyard. The combination of staircase with the assorted vibrant colored and custom-made metal lamps leads to the first floor passage, a space that connects well with ground floor activities through courtyard.

The lavish master suite faces the entrance of the house. It includes an impressive sitting space with bedroom, separate study area, huge dresser and bathroom. On other two sides of the floor, bedroom for their two sons are located.

The Design Source July - August 2017

The interiors and furniture pieces were planned to be simple and looking effortless in its place. Every space is quite different and is a reflection of the person it belongs to. There is a giant terrace garden on its east corner of the house, which has become the maximum utilized space in evening to its pleasant climatic condition and lush green outdoors.

The library being a core of knowledge in this academic campus, hence the architecture is designed for inspiring environment and as a contemplative place of learning. Natural light is used to make pleasant ambience in the entire building. The extension to building is planned to seamlessly integrate with existing building both externally and internally. The entire building is redesigned as open plan and for views across the various spaces and surrounding greens including the central courtyard. Easy circulation is organized in the floors aligning the movement horizontally as a complete loop around every floor of the building (like a circumambulation path) and the loop is connected vertically at four corners by staircases. The vertical expansion at the top most floors is constructed in lightweight metal

frame structure. It has external elevations with glazed walls for maximum natural lighting and external views of the landscape. All library administrative office functions are brought together. A digital knowledge lab, language lab, 24x7 reading hall, new entrance hall are added. All the existing trees are preserved, protected and additions are built around them. Care is taken that the site ecology and microclimate is maintained and enhanced. The main entrance is designed as large canopy above a glass box and added as an entry to the great institutional building. The circulation lobby is designed as a welcoming entrance hall. The open central courtyard is provided with cafĂŠ and landscaping for informal sitting and discussion on steps. The building except entrance lobby is air-conditioned to preserve the books and create comfort conditions for

Central Library IIT Bombay- The periodical hall has low height display racks to allow natural light through the entire hall. The curvilinear racks display magazines around the reading area with various types of sittings. The colours are kept minimal and coordinated from walls, floors, ceilings to furniture to create a warm contemplative space.

the readers and visitors. The architecture & interiors is a continuous dialogue between inside & outside, between architecture & nature, between users & natural light, between spaces inside and universe outside. The natural light, coordinated white colour and pastel shades, textures & furniture to create calm, peaceful & refreshing atmosphere to study in concentration. The library has become core magnet of the campus. It’s important since this project brings several ideas together right from designing with reference to site and context, learning in midst of green and

openness, using light for interesting environment to saving of energy, climate and place informing design, connecting users with architecture of inside and outside and reimaging the library and its architecture in the digital age. There was a continuous search for suitable materials for architectural ideas. For example in the Central Library IIT Bombay glass is used for letting in the natural light in all spaces to create pleasant and inspiring ambience. Glass has allowed to open views to outside greenery and create inside outside dialogue with surroundings.

As the seasons change the spaces get activated accordingly. Metal is used for light weight metal structure, roof and wall cladding work both internally and externally. Both materials are easy for construction and future maintenance. Natural Light is used in Library as main design tool which reduces energy bill of artificial

lighting. The green surroundings are preserved to keep microclimate cool and reduced heat loads. Deep shaded windows, large overhangs for sun heat and glare protection is adopted to reduce heat loads and maximum natural ventilation for lower energy consumption throughout the life cycle of the buildings.

Central Library IIT Bombay- The reference reading hall has book racks on one side with reading tables in the centre and other side. It is filled with natural light wherein the ceilings are designed to get maximum natural light from windows. Some of the reading tables are planned around the circular columns creating a rhythm in the space.

The Alluring Brick

Buildings are everywhere, we walk amongst them and live inside them, largely passive dwellers in cities of towers, houses, open spaces, restaurants and shops, in which we have no hand in creating. But we are their best audience. Owners, clients and residents come and go, but architecture lives on.

44

The Design Source July - August 2017

This project was about refurbishing an old structure to a hospitality project, where a restaurant was an essential part of it. Designed with the basic materials like wood for furniture, a brick wall, and rustic flooring, with ambient lighting enhanced the space aesthetically.

The space delivered a rustic yet sophisticated appeal. Having exposed brick walls with thoughtful staggering of half cut bricks and creatively playing with light and shadow is one of the major allure. The everlasting sohistication of the brick is used to the hilt to create a magical wall, that is the centerpiece. Creating an art wall, blending use of art and art-objects make the space of ‘timeless’ quality

to an other wise simple dining space with neat and clean lines for seating. It almost feels earthy and sustainable. The deep redness of the bricks combined with intelligent lighting to draw patterns on different times of the day and the muted colors in the background add to a serene, quiet and close to earth feel, making you want to sit , relax and enjoy your meal.

Modern Siheyuan

Twisting courtyard is a Siheyuan located in Paizihutong, Dashilar Area, Beijing. A Siheyuan is a traditional Chinese house, the typical topology is houses or buildings placed around a central courtyard. A typical Siheyuan has four buildings normally positioned along the north-south and east-west axis. The building positioned to the north and facing the south is considered the main house. The northern, eastern and western buildings are connected by beautifully decorated pathways. These passages serve as shelters from the sunshine during the day, and provide a cool place to appreciate the view of the courtyard at night.

Arch Studio was entrusted with the task of preserving the ancient concept and topology but upgrade the necessary infrastructure needed for modern life, thus turning this traditional courtyard, which mainly serve as a residence, into an attractive public space of Beijing Inner City. Twist within regular layout. The design aims at getting rid of the solemn and stereotyped impression given by Siheyuan, and creating an open and active living atmosphere. Based on the existing layout of the courtyard, the undulated floor is used to connect indoor and outdoor spaces of different height. The Design Source July - August 2017

51

The floor extends to the inside of the house, twisting into walls and roof, thus creating dynamic connection between inside and outside space. What’s hidden within the curved wall is necessary auxiliary spaces such as kitchen, toilet and warehouse; while reception and dinning spaces are shown outside the curved wall and connect to the courtyard as a whole.

Twist between patterns of utilization.

Both indoor and outdoor floors are paved with gray brick. The flooring gives the illusion of a water body meandering into the different parts of the house both inside and outside.

The four houses can be rented for public events for purposes such as recreation, meeting and gathering. Meanwhile, they could be served as a family hostel with three bedrooms.

A hawthorn tree in the courtyard is kept and being part of the twisting landscape.

Integrated furniture is used to enable the flexible switch of space scenes. Furniture boxes are inserted into the existing wood

frames of east and west wings. Wood platform with lifting table hidden inside could be used as tearoom or bedroom. Bed wall and partitive soft curtain are also used in the main room on the north to meet multiple use requirements. For building type “Siheyuan”, the courtyard is the core of living fun. “Twisting courtyard” makes micro-adjustment to relations between the parts to change the temperament of the courtyard space and to meet requirements of multiple use without changing the existing housing structure, making the traditional courtyard up-to-date and being integrated into modern urban life.

Spaces for All Minimalisim is a refined aesthetic that combines clean lines with luxurious materials and finishes, creating warm, sophisticated, and comfortable spaces. Minimalism’s long unbroken expanses, simple details, and soft color palette—these act as a visual palate cleanser. A successful minimalist setting, highlighting form and line and free of superfluous detailing, can be utterly sublime. It allows the eye, the mind, and the soul to rest and rejuvenate. Here is a design by Ar. Milind Pai that adheres to simplicity of a minimalist space with an eyecatching mix of tones and textures.

This project is a 4BHK apartment for a family of six. A desire for having a minimalistic but classy and functional home was the brief they shared with their designers. The project revolves around a clean base theme of white and beige, with splashes of colours unique to each room, and the taste of the person occupying it are at the centerstage.

There are a lot of interesting elements that are compelling and unique to this space. The entrance opens up in the living area which flows into the dining space which is connected to an open kitchen. The entrance passage gives a warm and welcoming feel with an eye catching stone wall cladding and visually balanced dark veneer. A sleek shoe console finished again with dark veneer gives it an appeal. The backlit brushed finished metal nameplate completes the look.

58

The Design Source July - August 2017

The living space reflects warmth with Italian ‘Bottocino’ marble flooring teamed with sleek leather furniture customized for the space and slim cove cuts in the false ceiling lighting with LED strips. The addition of a veneer panel in the ceiling only makes the living room look richer. The main TV panel cum home theatre system works as a focal feature in the living room area. The selected artefacts, very well accessorize the space and reflect the artistic taste of the end user. The bedrooms each have a unique design style.

The Design Source July - August 2017

59

The dining space has been accentuated with interesting wall units and console table, with geometric patterns all over making it a striking element in the space. Kitchen space is a well-planned with a dedicated breakfast counter in continuation with the regular work top. It continues to have a white and beige palate with white laminated cabinet and white and brown back painted glass shutters . To break the monotony of the aluminum profile, grey backsplash tiles and high gloss granite counter are juxtaposed.

60

The Design Source July - August 2017

A dedicated prayer or mandir space is functional yet visually appealing. The features like intricate patterned cabinet shutters, mother of pearl inlay work on the wall behind the idol, backlit slits in the marble panel and full wall marble cladded teamed with glass door opening with vinyl film create a compact space within the layout.

The master bedroom has a rich classy appeal with the use of huge wardrobe at the entrance and a TV panel with open display next to it. Tufted cushioned bed’s headboard, texture wallpaper on the headboard wall and artwork with ‘In sync’ furnishings gives the room a subtle yet rich look. The son’s bedroom has a unique character to itself, with zigzag patterns on the wall behind the headboard. The study space into the bedroom is made to look distinct with a catchy bold blue wallpaper and pure white flowing study top. The ceiling with led spots throwing light onto the space adds to the chic and class of the personal space.

Art for History Bhagat Singh was a charismatic Indian socialist revolutionary whose two acts of dramatic violence against the British in India and execution at age 23 made him a folk hero of the Indian independence movement. Bhagat Singh along with his associates Sukhdev and Rajguru became popular folk heroes after their death. They sacrificed their lives for the independence of India and continued to inspire even after their death. They became symbols. While their act was forgotten over the years, the symbol remained. Even today many towns and villages of the Punjab, and to a lesser extent in the rest of northern India, have memorials for them.

Managing Waste Mr. Ashish Paius, CEO Rebbeca Environment Engineering Company gives us some insights into systems for waste management and how it can be deployed in various existing and new projects. Tell us about your company Rebbeca Environment Engineering Solutions? We provide a biological solution to a biological problem. The REES operates with a patented Aerobic Bacterial Generator stimulating the growth of specialized and helpful bacteria right in your septic system. The system can be installed in any existing septic system where the blend of microorganisms immediately begins digesting wastes. The aggressive bacteria migrate into the septic field where they consume the bio mat that clogs the soil. The digestion is so complete that the need for pumping your septic system is virtually eliminated.

Garbasher - The Food Waste Disposer (FWD)

Who is your target audience? Builders, RWA’s, Hotels and restaurants and schools and colleges can use it.

• How can these systems be incorporated into existing housing and commercial projects? The technology we offer converts biomass waste into basic compounds such as water, Co2 and minerals that can be immediately reused by man, animals or plants. We utilize air, aerobic bacteria, bacteria generators, aerator devices and engineered containment vessels to create a system that consumes and converts biomass into water and recyclable compounds. This technology is totally compatible with standard residential and commercial waste plumbing systems. There is no need to alter the plumbing within the building envelope because our systems intercept the sewer pipes outside the building.

Office complexes are all gearing up to issues like water conservation, recycling and waste management how will your products help achieve this? REES can be installed anywhere. They are easy to set up and process wastewater at half the cost and energy consumption of our leading competitors. REES’ end product is clear water that can be

Sewage Treatment Plant introduced right back into the local water table, used for irrigation or even made potable. Unlike conventional treatment systems, which have to double in size to treat double the wastewater at double the cost and double the maintenance, REES’ biological system expands to meet needs naturally without manual regulation or added equipment.

Name few successful projects installed and functional & what is the response? SSV Coral, Hennur Road Bangalore, L&T Constructions, ITC Green Centre, Bangalore, Asset Homes, Kochi, St. Antony’s School, Khora, Assisi Convent School, Noida and Ettah are some examples.

Tell us something about the uptake and maintenance to these systems? As mentioned earlier, it’s a fit and forget system. It’s a maintenance free system. The reason is, the only electro-mechanical device that we use in this system is a twin lobe blower. Rest, the entire system is naturally made. Even the flow of water is controlled with geo gravitational force.
