The one person who can be credited to creating the ground work for India’s participation at the world stage is the Sri Lankan hair artist Nayana Karunaratne . She has played a pivotal role bringing international artists and promoting trainings which laid the foundation for Indian participation at world levels. Nayana Karunaratne may not be an Indian but she is certainly very well known in the Indian hair and beauty circuit. This Srilankan Hairdresser turned entrepreneur turned educationist turned Asia specialist has travelled through the length and breath of India perhaps far much more than many from the industry in India would have done. She has been credited with bringing world class stylists and hair professionls to conduct training seminars in India. She has also perhaps single handedly introduced India in a big way to International competitions and geared the Indian industry to participate in the world platforms and compete with the best to win accolades. As Nayana plans to enter into the Indian Hair education business New Age Salon catches up with the enigmatic Nayana and learns some more about her and her plans for the future.

What made you enter the field of hair and beauty?
Having been in Sri Lanka and India, what differences and similarities do you see in the hair and beauty industry in both the countries?
I must have been around 13 or 14 when my fascination for hairdressing drew me into this profession. I knew since then that hairdressing was my calling and I did just that.
Talent is the same. Yet in Sri Lanka we were exposed to the world scene before India, with Sri Lanka economy opening up in 1977. So we have an advantage. Also Sri Lankan hair and beauty industry persons are more literate and always appreciate training. There are quite a few Indian professionals who are world class, yet the country is so vast, they cannot serve everyone.
Your education?The professional training you have done? I completed my O levels and left school to join a hairdressing course. In the field of Hair I trained at Alan International, Vidal Sassoon, Toni & Guy , Rever , Wella and Schwarzkopf. In Beauty I trained at Raymond Young School of Beauty, Complexions and Lancome. The short courses that were followed regularly were many.
Why did you chose India to set up your salon, academy? My relationship with India was always good, may be because of my dancing (I did Bharata Natyam as a hobby) and many friends from India. My first professional connection with India was via Mrs, Sushila Vasvani in 1994 when she invited me to do a series of seminars in India. We also invited Indian professionals such as Nalini, Yasmin, Blossom Kochhar, Ambika Pillai and Micky Contractor to Hair Asia Pacific as judges. Blossom, Cory Walia and Asha Hariharan were some of the experts who were brought to Sri Lanka for seminars. We helped AIHBA to be formed in Chennai and held Hair Asia Pacific 2000 with them in Chennai. We helped to form HIP in Mumbai and held Hair Asia Pacific in Mumbai in 2005. Unfortunately both associations are not functioning now. I also work closely with Pakistan. Via OMC I work with Malaysia, China and Hong Kong.
How did you get chosen to represent Asia at the world stage, OMC? We (Sri Lanka Association of Hairdressers & Beauticians) joined OMC in 2002. By then we already had Hair Asia Pacific an international, competition that had a 14 country participation, which belongs to us. The then OMC Asia President Mr. Iwasaki from Japan wanted me to help him with organizing an Asia Cup before he retired. We had planned to have Hair Asia Pacific in Mumbai in 2005. So I agreed to hold both events together in Mumbai. At the end of the event, at the Asia Zone Board meeting, I was their unanimous choice to head Asia. I am holding that position for the 3rdterm now. What is the one most important change you see in the beauty industry in the last 5 years? In India, this industry has developed rapidly. People are now aware of the need of good education and training. Quality and standards of the salons have improved tremendously and more and more professionals are entering the business, unlike those days when untrained persons owned salons and ran them with less qualified staff.
What are your business plans in India ? We are very committed to spread IHB education in India. We have very big plans for barbering, hair and beauty sector and hope to include other related fields too. We want all salon staff that work on clients to be qualified. We have a very impressive international team of trainers and consultants in IHB who will guide us. We have already chalked up programmes up to management level and university degree. IHB is committed to work with Academies across India. We will continue to train the trainers and provide updated curriculum to the Academies and support them to teach the students maintaining the IHB international standard, but in their chosen language. IHB will control the quality standard of the exams.
Who according to you are the change makers in the Indian beauty sector? None other than the young staff who work on the floor looking after the clients. They know the need of the clients and the changing trends for the salons. The salon owners and product / suppliers have to work with them to make the changes for the better.
How do you perceive the competition here? Increasing. It’s good. At the moment people worry about too many salons in India. Not yet, India needs many more ‘quality’ salons. Imagine if all the people of Indian middle class and the higher strata, visited a salon ‘only once a month’ even for a small service such as a shampoo or waxing ! What volume of business are we talking? So future for the industry is good, but it will grow only with quality foundation education and professionalism.
What are the awards you have received over the years and which one do you cherish the most, and why? I have received many awards that I cannot even count. Among them, the following are most cherished for being able to achieve what each of those awards represent. New Age Salon & Spa
Gold Diploma at Alan International, London as the best student. 1980. Best Long Hair Stylist award at the Asian Hair and Makeup competition in Bangkok in 1986; Zonta Woman of Achievement Award in 1994; OMC Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Asia 2008 and OMC Medal of Distinction in 2009; Woman Entrepreneur of the Year - Sri Lanka in 2008; Business Woman of the Year – Sri Lanka 2008; Inspirational Woman f the Year- Sri Lanka 2014/15.
You have played an important role in helping India get on the global stage for international competitions. Can you tell us about this experience? Developing India is part of my job as Asia Zone President of OMC. From the time I was appointed to this post, I have used my energy and budgets to develop education in Asia as only Japan and South Korea were known in the world then. I was successful in getting China, Hong Kong and Malaysia on in to the World map as they grabbed all training opportunities and worked very systematically with OMC competitions. Now they always win gold medals. India should be the same as China. Equal in size (population) with abundant talent. Getting India active was a little difficult as popular salon owners were too busy to work for OMC.

Since AIHBA was formed in Delhi, they have done a great job of promoting OMC trainings and competitions. Now with World Skills coming to India, interest and commitment among the young will be better. India has a great potential for world champions. This is just like cricket. You need to plan ahead, scout for talent and then make teams and nurture them, train and guide them for a few years and send them to the world stage. They will then reach the stars easily.
What do you see as the 3 most important challenges the beauty and hair industry face? Education –education -education all the way – 1. Education - a thorough knowledge of the subject should be given to all persons on the salon floor as they handle human beings 2. Education with also give Etiquette, Discipline, Loyalty, Commitment and Value of Employment 3. Education will also instill the importance of Salon Hygiene - Health & Safety
Who are your mentors? Personal life – my mother Professional life – my first teacher –Late Janet Balasuriya, and late Mr. Jun Encarnacion – the Asian Gold Medalist and head of the Philippines Hairdressers Association, who guided me and believed that I could do a lot to the industry; and the current OMC World President - Mr Fodera, for being a true diplomat to run OMC with 77 countries.
What do you feel about your son also joining this industry? I never wanted to influence my children to follow my business and they were encouraged to pursue their own career paths. My son is looking at our salons and academies from a management level as he is a qualified IT engineer. He is young, from the digital world and has good people skills. I am sure this influence will help the business. The best quality he has is the respect for the hair and beauty industry and all our staff.
A word of advise to youngsters Please remember - Talent is only ¼ of your ability. It’s God given and need to be cherished. But to progress you need to concentrate on the other ¾ which is hard work, discipline and continuous education

Making Dreams Come True The Beauty industry is replete with success stories that are a source of inspiration and deserve to be applauded. Here is the story of Radha Muthuraja Hair and Beauty expert whoshares with NASS her journey in the world of beauty and hair. Every girl dreams about having great hair and skin, and so like so many others I made my entry into the Beauty Industry 15 years ago. What started off as a summer course for 6 months, shaped into a wonderful career opportunity for me. The beauty business had just seen a boom and a few good salons had sprung up around Bangalore. I completed my Cosmetology course from Shamans Beauty School and interned with them before exploring a world of opportunities that lay ahead. My foray into the salon world began with Peaches - the styling salon in 2002. Being a fashion forward salon I was exposed to working with famous cosmetic brands very early on. Apart from the Shamans Cosmetology certificate in Hair & beauty I also hold an Advanced Diploma in Hairdressing from City & Guilds London. Although my domain has primarily been Hair I have now diversified my expertise in makeup. Becoming a makeup artist is no easy task. It requires a lot of skill, patience and a certain level of creativity, plus lots of learnings and being up to date with the current fashion trends. I have trained extensively with make up brands like Kryolan and Ketts. Also being a trainer with a reputed Beauty School at Bangalore gave me the opportunity to learn and work with various other reputed brands. Tell us about your most memorable work experience?
Tell us about your most memorable work experience?
Over 15 years in this industry I have had the privilege to work some great salons where I personally attended to clients grooming needs. I then moved on to becoming a trainer for a beauty Beauty School and there on moved to directly working with the No 1 Hair Color brand in India. It has been quite an experience and the graph career wise has only moved upwards.
My most favourite of the lot in my experience is the Exposure at the World Skills Competition in London. I had to opportunity to groom and mentor an upcoming stylist who won the Finals in All India, later we represented India at the competition in London in 2011. To work with Stylists and artists from all over the world on a platform like this is an unforgettable experience.
Which aspect of beauty do you enjoy most?
What would you like to tell youngsters who wish to get into the beauty industry?
My personal preferences are Hair and Makeup, it gives me the freedom to be creative and explore with different styles and trends. A client is able have a complete makeover with just a change in hair color or cut, or even with a simple evening makeup they are able to see results or difference immediately. Working on Bangalore fashion week with brands like Schwarzkopf Professional gave me back stage experience and the confidence to take up Hair and Makeup seriously on a bigger platform.

Beginnings are always the hardest part of ones journey. Especially being a girl and wanting to venture out into the so called salon business, which almost 2 decades back was not even considered a respectable job. Usually the biggest challenges are the ones you face with in your own families. I had mine too , but It took persistence and belief in my work to have come so far and achieved so much. And the drive to prove your self right. Today this is one of the most sought after and profitable industries and is run by people majorly from IT & White collared

backgrounds and various other streams. People have become more excepting of our work and today a hairdresser or a make up artist or a skin therapist commands great respect and extremely good salaries.
Tell us about education and training in the beauty profession. Constant learning and training in the beauty industry is a must if one wants to keep up with the latest trends and products. Gone are the days where someone who couldn’t excel at studies chose this line of work. Today to color hair, understand the art of make up or even diagnose skin types one need to know and understand the basics of Hair &Skin. There are chemical formulations, a little bit of math and science involved too. We could do more with focus on quality education and increase the awareness about the industry.
How projects are you working on for the near future. I am looking forward to working on some Bridal projects slated for the next coming months. Also plan to attend a few workshops in Mumbai to update on trends.

Accolades for Intercoiffure Mondial (ICD) India @ 22nd ICD WORLD CONGRESS Osaka/Kyoto Japan The 22nd ICD World Congress held in Osaka/Kyoto Japan, in May, 2017 saw praises and accolades for Intercoiffure Mondial (ICD) India . The first felicitation was when ICD India was awarded with the ‘Best Section’ amongst its peers for the last 10 years at the congress. Dr. Kochhar was also bestowed with the prestigious ‘Knight Award’ for her contribution to the world of beauty and hair as well as her continued efforts towards strengthening ICD India’s position at International level. Education for Life (EFL) India project which is a training and education programme for the youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds got thumbs up and an honorary certificate. The project in India is carried out Blossom Kochhar College of Creative Arts and Design (BKCCAD) under the patronage of ICD India. Samantha Kochhar was also announced as the Ambassador EFL-India at the congress.

Adding another feather to the country’s cap, Dr. Kochhar was also declared Vice-President Oceania Region by Mr. OCHS at the congress. I would like to dedicate this award to ICD India members, to their incredible creative genius and artistry which has shown through at the ICD world stage and got India such notable praise and accolades from the international community.
