The summer is upon us. Albeit a little too soon. For a tropical country like India, the sweltering heat under the scorching sun is not really a novelty. For almost 6 to 8 months, the country reels under the sun. Skin and hair care in such severe conditions need to be top priority. There a host of products today in the market today to address these concerns. Its best perhaps to do a bit of research on them before closing on any one would perhaps be a good idea.

A sharp yet clear ideology defines the brand “Rod Anker Salons”. A hip sound which is meant to be young and fresh and encompasses all the best in practice, design and style. Rod Anker, he is discerning and addresses his audience with this critical eye. He stands for a change, which is a change for the better. He believes in doing what he preaches and works to create magic with hair which is loved. He loves connecting with people and uses this as tool to learn, evolve and ultimately deliver results. Because that’s what talks. He is ready to give up a profit in lieu of healthy hair as he thinks ethics are crucial to every salon practice. Meet Rod Anker the man behind the brand and get close peek into his mind and practice. How would you want to define the Rod Anker brand?

How and why did you make the journey from Australia to India?

Its “ Rod Anker Salons” that’s the brand we started about 18 months ago. The brand is a young brand not by age but by definition, it appeals to the new generation in India that demand something new, something fresh!

I have been in India since 2008. I came here with another brand that later left India and I then started this brand.

Why did you choose to continue living in India and practice your art, once the brand you came with left?

We are connected globally yet understand the Indian market. We don’t do everything but what we do is the best, we are a hair salon with our primary focus being on hair.

April - May 2017

After I came to India, I saw an enormous gap in the market with everyone doing everything in the salon and not being able to specialise and hence deliver anything much. It was then that I decided to stay and open salon.

What made you venture into the hair industry? In Australia doing a trade (which you have studied for 4 years at a Trade school) is respected and hair was something I wanted to do from a very young age.

What would be your professional education and qualifications? Apart from the 4 year training and qualification in Hairdressing, I have done a business management degree.

Why Delhi ? Why not Mumbai, especially since Mumbai is the place where Bollywood is, and you have done some work in Bollyoood? I have done and do a lot of people in Bollywood, I don’t think that defines me or the brand. However I am lucky to have Bollywood stars as clients and friends. I didn’t choose Delhi, that’s where the brand is. There is a lot more to this industry than Bollywood or celebrity clients. New Age Salon

You say you do not follow what is normal, you create something new, what is this new? How would you define your work? We don’t follow, we create, but that in itself at times means following someone right?! To give a better understanding, for instance we do not do rebonding because we believe it destroys the hair. Now most salons if not all do it. We on the other hand end up doing a lot of damage control for hair which have come through other salons. We believe its better to have some ethics. It is our firm belief and commitment to do the right thing that is important for the hair integrity than just pursue a sale or a profit.

How would you compare India and the Indian hair industry vis a vis Australia and Beijing? Hairdressing in India and the way salons are run is like Australia in the 80’s where everyone discounted everything. Everyone was trying to be the biggest the fastest and no one concentrated on skill development or quality of service. To me it’s a follow me mentality with very few understanding it. The biggest issue this industry has in India is that change has to happen from within and it’s the owners of these salons that need to understand that what is crucial is quality and the rest will naturally follow.

You have been awarded and feted on several prestigious shows, which award do you cherish the most and why? I was voted to the top 10 in the World by Style Stars a few years ago. It was great. More recently being awarded Vogue India’s Best Colorist was also a great feeling but honestly its not about awards its about the work, so having so many clients come back and refer people to not only myself but our team who have all been trained is like being awarded. How would you describe the customers and clients in India, in terms of their knowledge about hair and trends, their standards and expectations from a hairstylist or salon? As a broad cross section the people don’t’ know, so its very difficult to have perceptive and critical clients who understand hair and its treatments. What the general perception is that hair care involves a lot of washing every second or third day , and a possible hair spa and rubbing oil onto there scalp. All of this is nonsense, however no one wants to change this perception, because its deeply grained in the minds. Education has to happen first with hairdressers, then media, then clients.

What will be the trend for 2017 in hair? Bangs, Fade haircut for men, Solid combination colors & Balliage will dominate the hair trends in 2017.

Any words of advise for young professionals entering the hair industry? Do your homework on who to work for BEFORE you start. A lot of salons and owners will have you either sitting at the basin for the next 3 years or cutting hair within the first week (neither is a good idea! ) New Age Salon

tattoos

Many salons have added tattoo studios to their businesses. A tattoo is a form of body modification, made by inserting ink, dyes and pigments, either indelible or temporary, into the dermis layer of the skin to change the pigment. In the beauty world we have heard of permanent make up, which is essentially tattoo. Permanent makeup is a specific application of tattooing which is specifically geared towards mimicking the appearance of makeup in a permanent manner. Tattooing in general is far broader and typically isn’t geared towards replacing the need for daily makeup. They are both “tattoos”, just different purposes and styles. We take a close look at a tattoo artist, Shymali Pandoa who chose this art form to express her creativity . What compelled you to learn tattooing and what fascinated you about its art form?

went with the whole god damned crew to a tiny ass studio in Bangalore. I’ve never taken anyone along for a tattoo since then.

I always loved tattoos but don’t ever remember consciously considering it as an actual career till I met Lokesh , my mentor, at Devilz Tattooz. I loved the idea of having something beautiful and poignant being a part of our skin. I’m not too attached to the idea of “untouched”/ “clean” skin- our lives leave deeper and uglier scars that are unseen and beneath the surface. Atleast this way we can choose to put beautiful things on top as reminders of where we’ve been and where we wish to be.

What was the first tattoo you did as an artist?

A brief of your education I studied visual communication design at Sristhi School of Art, Design and Technology and graduated in 2010.

What and when was the first tattoo you got? My first tattoo was Celtic pentacle- I was into nature worship and all things pagan back then. It was my 18th birthday and I April - May 2017

33

The first tattoo I did was on myself - as a practice piece. Its an old school swallow with an arrow pierced through it. The first tattoo I did on someone else though was something small and forgettable to be honest because that’s what one needs to start out with.

Is tattooing as an art form? How? In my opinion tattooing is a perfect amalgamation of commercial art and fine art- it requires a lot of dedication and attention to detail and a unique visual language for an artist to really stand out in this field. In fact the pressure is two fold because it isn’t enough to make the artwork look perfect but it requires technical mastery to make sure it heals well too.

tattoos

What has been the tattoo you are most proud of till date? I love doing custom pieces, which means people come to me for my style of illustrations and tattoos to represent their ideas. Each on of these pieces presents a new set of challenges and over coming those and learning from them is in itself a thing to be proud of.

Devilz Tattooz. They are the most patient, nurturing and inspiring bunch and I would’ve most certainly not lasted without their tough love and support.

Are you inspired/interested in the tribal tattoo art in India?

Have you had any mishaps while tattooing?

My great grandmother used to tattoo in her tribal village in Orissa, I think its a thing of pride and definitely a part of out culture that’s worth protecting and carrying forward.

Mishaps, no. Mistakes, yes- but none that didn’t have a quick fix available.

What is the most common part of the body that people want tattooed?

Most interesting /outrageous tattoo request you have received?

Mostly the side of the wrist of the forearm and other places which are most visible to the others.

Outrageous for me would be people who come with no ideas about what they want. Furthermore that they want something that literally a million other people have. There have been a lot of interesting pieces however, a couple being a humpback whale with a dream catcher and a tattoo based on an excerpt from Jack Kerouac’s- On the Road. Both of these tattoos and more can be view on my FB page ArtPanda.

What is the most strange or unusual body part you have tattooed? I don’t think there’s any such body part which I find strange or unusual, we’re all human beings and have the same body parts right? The only thing to keep in mind when you’re getting tattooed is that the tattoo needs to fit that part of your body well, like follow the curves of your muscles etc.

Do people come with specific requests? Are they open to your inputs? Yes and sometimes. Clients in India are still learning about art and individual expression. So even the most curious and adventurous folk have their reservations about stepping out of their comfort zone and trying new styles of artwork. That being said a lot of them eventually listen to their artists once they see the final artwork.

How often do you get an opportunity to design a tattoo for a person? More and more often now that I’m getting my work out there.

Who are the tattoo artists you admire in India/abroad? My sources of inspiration change everyday- a lot of times i’m inspired by the new artists and individuals I meet through my profession. I love women like Sasha Unisex however, who have mastered the technique have a unique style which they stick to. That’s the aim. All my learning is due to the wonderful artists I work with at New Age Salon

emotions and ideas. They are two different processes and so far I haven’t felt the need to cross that line.

At the studio where I work, we either charge by the hour or my the square inch depending how intricate or simple the design is.

Do you think people’s perception of people with tattoos has changed in the last decade?

While first learning, how did you practice tattooing?

No, not at all. Its slightly hypocritical actually- as long as the tattoos are of an “acceptable”/”decent” format, i.e. - small, inconspicuous, not unique, religious or about their parents or spouse then its okay. If it breaks out of the same shitty societal norms then its viewed as trashy.

There is a rubber skin available with most tattoo suppliers, that’s what I practiced on.

What is the best part of your profession? It has its good days and bad, everything depends on our dynamic with our clients really. One of the best things about this profession is the fact that I get to meet such a diverse bunch of people. The profession itself requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice but that’s true if you want to excel in any creative field.

Would you consider tattooing as part of the beauty industry? As some salons offer tattooing as an additional service. No. This is not like getting your nails done or getting hair extension. These are a permanent parts of your body, its art, its spiritual and not a form of weekend relaxation. It could be viewed as a part of the fashion industry however but then again the more editorial part of that industry.

What would you say is the worst thing about being a tattoo artist? Back problems! And clients who think we are servants- especially in Delhi where people lack the basic respect towards fellow human beings.

Do people who come for tattoing consider it as a form of beauty?

What’s on your tattoo wishlist, a particular tattoo you would love to create if you were to finding a willing client?

Yes, a lot of people come because its fashionable.

What is the range of the people (age/profession/class/ gender etc) who come for tattoos. Can you share one interesting or emotional story attached to one of your client’s tattoos?

No such tattoo. When I create any artwork it’s a form of self expression but when i draw for tattoos its to visualize a clients

The shop where I work draws clients from across all ages and professions really- lawyers, doctors, journalists, homemakers, cricketers, entertainers, businessmen, parents, grandparentsyou name it. I won’t go into the specifics of any one story because that’s too personal and told to me in confidentiality but I’ve met many strong and beautiful women who had to break and overcome patriarchal abuse and get tattoos to commemorate these new phases of their respective lives.

Give us some idea of the costs involved in tattooing. We charge around 10k for a tattoo thats 3inches in height and 3inches in width- which is a medium sized tattoos. All studios charge differently however.

Does it involve retouching? what is the care prescribed for tatttoos? Yes tattoos involve retouching, mostly just the once after 5 weeks. The basic aftercare again varies from artist to artist but it necessary to keep a tattoo clean and moisturised while its healing.

What are the kind of safety standards important for a good tattoo parlour/artist New and disposable materials should be used for EVERY tattoo. All surfaces that come in contact with the client’s skin needs to be covered in plastic which should also be changed with every tattoo. The inks should be FDA approved and preferably organic. Please make sure your artist wears gloves and uses new ink caps for your tattoo.

Millennials are the ideal spa-goers. It’s a generation that’s technologydriven, mobile-ready, looking for immediate gratification, and wanting to feel valued, to savor authentic experiences and adventures. Affordability is a question but this is the audience Spas should gear up to. More and more teen and college goers will go for spa services. It will be like getting a haircut. According to the US Census, in 2015 there are 92 million millennials in the marketplace. They range from 18-35 years-old and are presently the largest demographic age group.

Millennials are wellness concious. They do spend money on the things they value, and they value wellness. From the bands on their wrists, they track every step, every heartbeat, every hour of rest and every calorie. Fitness is very important to them - a lifestyle of exercise and eating right shapes their choices. Fresh, healthy foods, salads, organic, probiotic are the drivers of today’s food scene. Nail Trends you can follow

Nail Art Trends from the runway at New York Fashion Week. Creativity continues to produce a nail art trend that is very interesting and great fun. Moreover, not only dark colors, but even multicolors appear in every runway. Read more what are nail art trend that you can try or apply to your nails. Stacey Bendet created magical nails for The Alice + Olivia show. It combined complementary colors and dynamic prints wrapped in intricate and magical story-telling!! The NAILS were perfect in their sophisticated simplicity!

The first of three looks was ‘Crown of Palms,’ featuring a crown of hand-painted palm leaves around the perimeter of the nail on a cream-tinted soft oval base to create a natural contouring and slimming effect.

The next look was the ‘Palm French,’ which took its cue from the original French mani, but took creative license in making it more artistic. One side was a hand-painted rich green palm frond and the other side, a soft dusty pink frame. New Age Salon

And finally, it ended with the magical story with a cascade of the tiniest clear crystals falling like a summer mist on the most ethereal and concealed healthy base. Light, lovely, wearable and city chic.

China Glaze executed nail art for three shows at NYFW. Nail leads Naomi Yasuda, Honey, and Miss Pop worked with designers at Opening Ceremony, Proenza Schouler, and Rachel Antonoff to create unique works of art.

Opening Ceremony’s “Pageant of the People” event celebrated the story of American immigrants and featured bold nails. Naomi Yasuda was inspired by the patterns in the collection, the bold stripes and waves. The color palette was primary-colored stripes on a black tip with negative space at the base and waves in two shades of gray, bright blue, and white at the tip of the natural nail. The nails are bold, modern, and wearable.

This summer will be dripping with art deco design, lush foliage and juicy tropical hues. With Cuba on every fashionista’s travel itinerary, we foresee a sophisticated summer style mashup of cultural-influence, bold color and graphic prints. New Age Salon

Nail artist Honey created a modern and chic abstract line in Liquid Leather for Proenza Schouler. The painted lines were freehanded so no two models wore the same look. The design was capped with top coat for a high shine, negative space final look.

Designer Rachel Antonoff collaborated with Archie Comics for her spring collection. Miss Pop brought to life quirky nail art looks to top off the collection. Nail looks featured hearts, punctuation marks, and speech bubbles.

this summer

Keep your nails strong and shiny this summer.

Remove polish carefully Use a nail polish remover with acetone for stubborn polish and glitter. If you still have excess nail polish near your cuticle, use a cuticle remover to push them back, then try to remove the polish again. For regular glossy shades opt for non acetone remover.

Moisturize Nails are porous, moisture them regulary to keep them healthy. After swimming make sure you generously moisturize because too long in water can cause the to weaken.

Avoid skippy the first base coat Base coat makes your manicure last longer. Base coats also prevent polish from staining your nails. Some base coats are packed with ingredients to address to a number of nail issues. Read the labels to decide which one best suits your needs. For extra dry nails choose one that’s moisturizing to keep nails in tip-top shape. If the surfaces of your nails are uneven, opt for a base coat with ridgefilling properties. This will provide a thicker base to even out ridges or indentations in the nail before applying the color coat. If you suffer from weak, brittle nails, go with a strengthening formula like keratin.

Take a break

Keep super bright polish for upto two weeks and then take a break. If they stay any longer they can cause discoloration of nails.

Beware of base coats that claim to be nail hardeners, these usually contain a high content of formaldehyde and will temporarily harden your nails, but will later cause them to split and crack easier because they’ll become too hard. April - May 2017

step by step

Lips: Define the shape of your lips with bubblegum pink lip liner and to give a glossy natural finish to your lips, apply lipstick.

Eyes: As this season is a season of flowers, colorful makeup will enhance your beauty quotient. Apply soft pastel shadings on your eyes. If you don’t want to put eye shadow, then you can also apply colorful liner. Apply vanilla shade in eyebrows and white pencil shading on borderline. To give fresh look to your eyes, apply mascara cots.

Hair: You can apply gel to your hair and make a silk pony tail or else you can apply colors on the side of the hair and keep it open also. At last apply good aroma perfume to complete your look.

Jaguar THERMOCUT Scissor The cutting-edge innovation in hair cutting that reduce split ends and helps hair grow longer and stronger! In the age of blow-drying, brushing, coloring, and hot tools, scruffy split ends seem inevitable. Now, Headstart InternationaI has provided a solution for top stylists to give their Clients the most hygienic cut using the Jaguar THERMOCUT System, or “hot scissors”. The technological developments and increasing demands of Clients are making salon professionals conscious, of the brands and products they use on their Clients. One such professional hairstylist, Mr. Iqbal Shah became the proud owner of the innovative Jaguar THERMOCUT system. How does THERMOCUT work: The blades of the hairdressing scissors are heated. The cuticles of the hair ends are sealed by the heat by spreading the natural keratin found in the hair across the cuticle, which stimulates self-regeneration of the hair and seals the ends thereby reducing split ends. With THERMOCUT System all cutting techniques such as slicing, feathering, pointcutting etc. are possible. Excited and elevated by the fact of owning the Jaguar THERMOCUT system, Mr. Iqbal, Stylist and Owner at Hair & Rush Salon in Delhi claims that “Unlike traditional scissors, which open the cuticle and leave the hair susceptible to environmental stress that can cause frizz and dryness, the heat from the hot scissors seals the end of the hair to trap in moisture and protect the hair from damage. This keeps the cut looking fresh for weeks New Age Salon

as compared to a regular haircut, but it won’t cure split ends for good—you still have to be consistent with regular haircuts.” The THERMOCUT System can be individually adjusted to every quality and length of hair, producing an immediate optimum result. Stylists can adjust the temperature from around 270 degrees for fine hair to up to 310 for coarse locks. Price: Rs. 1,24,975/ Email: info@headstartinternational.in
