Alligator Robb is Back - with Snakes this Time!

Frank Robb is back with another entertaining article - this time about snakes. Basically, there are four snakes you do not want to chum up with, but there are many others that play an important role in our ecosystem. Frank clues us in on how to distinguish the difference between the friendly rodent and insect eating reptiles versus the four deadly venomous types that will send you on a quick trip to the Parrish Hospital. Basically, snakes do everything they can to avoid interaction with you, so if you stay alert, keep your eyes on the ground, all will be good. Read more from Robb on page 34.

Nature Center Family Fall Fun Day

Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 22 as the Nature Center will be holding their annual Fall Fun Day starting at 10:00 am. This is an opportunity to learn about all things nature related including bats, bees, birds, snakes, and gopher tortoises all found in our area. There will be games and treats and different things to purchase, including your annual Nature Center membership. This is a great time for all ages, especially those younger nature seekers. Sorry, no pets allowed. Learn more about the Nature Center events on pages 26-27.

It’s time to start making plans for the great list of events and shows the TGO Activities Committee has lined up for this season. It kicks off with the annual Halloween Social inside the Manor on Saturday, October 29, followed by an inside the park Trick or Treat event. From there we have a night of Trivia, then the Artisan Market and the first of the Concert Series featuring Illusionist Jay Mattioli on November 17. Now is the time to purchase tickets as they will go fast! More information about upcoming events and concerts starts on page 17.

Happy Fall Everyone! It is a pleasure to see many of our seasonal owners and residents now returning to TGO as the weather begins to cool. Welcome Back!

This high season also re-engages our CSA Board of Directors. CSA Board Meetings are held monthly, from October to May, on the third Wednesday of the month at 2:00 pm. The season’s first meeting will take place next Wednesday, October 19 at 2:00 pm in The Manor. I will report to the board and owners on current CSA activities, and Chairman Tom Wheir will lead the CSA Board through agenda items and votes on strategic items to keep our community great. Please attend in person to see our business take place first-hand. Owners can address the entire Board at these meetings through the green-card process. You can also watch the meeting from home on channel 732.

You are cordially invited to the CSA office Open House on Monday afternoon, October 31. Come join us for some Halloween fun while we tour you through our newly renovated CSA office space and say Thank You for our new digs. This is a walk-through and “trick or treat” event so you can arrive anytime between 2:00 - 4:00 pm. The walk-through will end in the newly renovated Juke Box Rec Room where you will view and vote on your favorite carved pumpkins on display from your neighbors. Costumes are optional, and more information on this event is found on page 14 of this issue of The Happenings. Do you enjoy carving pumpkins? Call the CSA office at 321-268-9767 to enter our pumpkin carving contest, and you could win a $50 gift card to Blue Heron on October 31.

Hurricane Ian allowed us to test the phone-calling capabilities of our new community emergency notification system called “Alert Media.” This system allowed us to call our owners to share important information. Our Alert Media phone number is 321-325-8715.Several owners called to tell us this number showed up as SPAM. Please take a moment to program this phone number into your phone’s contacts as “TGO-CSA Alert.” This will ensure that your phone recognizes that CSA is calling with important information about your home and community. You may also want to add no-reply@alertmedia.com to your email program to ensure our messages do not go to spam.

As I write this article today, Monday, October 10, the floodwater is now the only remaining evidence of Hurricane Ian in our community. Those home sites around the 300 block of Plantation and along the south section of Oak Cove were certainly impacted by the rising water from the St. Johns River. Today the receding floodwaters allowed us to reopen a flooded section of Plantation Road after over one week of closures. The hurricane also upset the Waste Management garbage pick-up schedule last week and caused a lot of problems for our trash collections. Waste Management seems to be back on track now. The only good thing about Hurricane Ian was that it showed me our community’s strength and resilience. I saw CSA employees work extra hard to clean up and restore our community quickly and get us running again. I saw many neighbors helping neighbors and volunteering to care for each other. That was impressive!

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards and shown on our TV Community Channel 732. The actual meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel. CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the Plantation Manor at 10:00 am. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meetings will be held on the following Wednesday dates at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch: November 2, November 23 and December 14. The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on the Monday before an ARC meeting.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa. org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them in writing to the ARC Secretary.

There is an opening for owners who wish to serve on the Finance Committee. An application needs to be completed to apply for committees. Election Year for Chairman Positions

The year 2023 is an Election Year for the Chairman position of both the Community Services Association Board of Directors and the Architectural Review Committee. For this reason, Election Notices will be mailed to all properties at The Great Outdoors. Included with the Election Notice will be a request form for obtaining an Absentee Ballot for those who expect to need one.

Automated Visitor Call-In - 321-383-8802

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

Service and Set-Up Calls - 833-697-7328

The CSA has a contract with Spectrum that includes Spectrum TV Select and Spectrum Internet services. If you are experiencing problems with their service or need to set up a new service, call the number above. Tell them your community at The Great Outdoors has a bulk agreement known as the Bronze Package.

TGO Community Channel 732

Our television channel for Community Services Association and other information about The Great Outdoors can be viewed using a digital TV tuned to Channel 732 on the Spectrum Cable TV system. The TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@ tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. These applications are scheduled in 2022 as follows:

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list.

They will make additional visits on the following 2022 dates: October 20, November 10, and December 15.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator)

Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

Please call the CSA Office at 321-2689767 during the regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

Guide to Living With Alligators in TGO

There are 32 Lakes in The Great Outdoors and all of them are home to alligators. Please keep these points in mind to be safe when alligators could be nearby:

• It is illegal to feed, taunt or harass an alligator.

November 12 at 10:00 am at the TGO Community Church. Ron Carroll lived in TGO for 15 years with his wife of 53 years, Karen. They have two children, Jonathan and Ronald. They moved from New Hampshire where Ron had been the Information Technology Director for Southern Connecticut Gas Company. He was a volunteer firefighter in Shelton, CT for 25 years. He also volunteered his time on the Board of Directors at Lake Ashuelot Estates, Washington, NH, as the manager of the marina. While at TGO, he was a member of ARC for 10 years. Ron was a great fix-it man and a NASCAR and Disney enthusiast.

Ron was a friend to everyone he met and always willing to help others. Anyone who knew Ron, knew that he was the most loving husband, father and grandfather a family could ask for. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world. He will be greatly missed, and his memory will live on with everyone who loves him.

Activities Committee Votes To Upgrade Manor Stage Lighting

The Activities Committee is a “Florida 501C Not For Profit” organi zation that supports The Great Outdoors homeowners and renters with various entertainment. This volunteer group typically pro vides five themed socials, five concert performances, a 5K Walk/ Run event, weekly bingo, nickel bingo, Trivia nights and a Variety Show each season. All money collected is used to support these events and upgrade manor equipment. Over the years money has also been used to purchase tables, chairs, sound equipment, front porch furniture and ice machines. Money has been contributed to the CSA for manor projects such as the lobby tile, kitchen upgrades and office furniture.

This year the Activity Committee voted to fund Phase 1 of the stage lighting upgrade. The light equipment was about 20 years old, the interface to the control board was no longer supported, and the control board was not 100% functional. The Sound and Light committee was given the task of finding replacement lights and a new control board. They hired Jack Links and Associates from Rockledge to assist with the selection of lights and provide additional installation help. This is the same company that installed some of our lights 18 years ago.

Links sent a representative to our facility, took measure ments then returned with demo lights provided by Chauvet Lighting from Miami. The committee members were able to evaluate their recommendations in our facility prior to purchasing the equipment. Fortunately, the short lead times for all the lights, control board and cabling allowed the project to be completed before August.

After the initial installation of the new light fixtures, committee members finished the project which included installing DMX split ters, securing loose cables, routing DMX cabling under the stage, and soldering and installing new DMX wall receptacles. Approx

imately two thirds of the lighting is now converted to LED, and we have a new control board. Phase 1 of the lighting upgrade is complete!

The remain ing lights are also almost 20 years old and often require trips to Orlando to be re paired. Phase 2 and Phase 3 of this project are in the planning stages. Each Phase will address replacement of the old lights and will ultimately enhance the manor lighting for various events.

We are thrilled beyond measure with the results of this project. The curtains are on fire with color, we have multiple chase sequences, lights that dance to the music and a few surprises in store for the audience. We believe you will enjoy the new effects!

If you have never attended our Concert Series, we hope you will give it a try. If you are a regular attendee, thank you for sup porting the Concert Series. This season’s entertainment includes an illusionist, a comedian, a country band, a rock and roll band (early rock) and a Bee Gees tribute band. These are truly class act performances that you can see right here at TGO for the bargain price of $15 for General Admission. Tickets are available at the TGO Ticket Sales Office located at Hobbyland.

GOLF CART NATURE TRAIL

The following information about the Golf Cart Nature Trail is from Betty Salter’s brochure titled “Nature Trails of The Great Outdoors.” Trail brochures can be found in the Nature Center museum on the display case by the enclosed porch door. Individual trail brochures can be found in the same location in the museum and at each trail’s trailhead. However, there is no brochure for this trail.

The Golf Cart Nature Trail is for everyone. It is a multiuse trail… golf carts, bicycles and walking are permitted. Pets are not permitted. The trail begins at the end of Addison Way in Hammock Oaks and continues to Raccoon Road near our water treatment plant. You may see deer, turkey, bobcats or other wildlife. When the Fire Hazard is rated Moderately High or High, gas golf carts should not be on this trail. Distance 2 miles

The humidity had been high. In fact, the ground was saturated by the time Tropical Storm IAN arrived on the Southwest Florida Coastline. It quickly escalated in intensity to Class 4 Hurricane status!

Ft. Meyers was devastated by the wind and storm surge, as were Sanibel Island and Captiva. I mean DEVASTATED!!! As you know, my family and pets survived Hurricane Andrew exactly 30 years ago and 100 miles EAST. Believe me, I know DEVASTATED! Rivers and creeks have risen well over their banks. The word is that the flooding could last for months! So far 500 water rescues have been performed! More than 100 fatalities have been documented. There will be more yet to be found in the storm wreck and the rubble. Many of the missing will never be found! Many living survivors will be permanently changed. Living survivors will never be the same. Some of those folks will be better prepared for the next Mega Storm! Perhaps they will print out instructions for Hurricane Survival from the electronic version of “The Happenings” or file hard copy cutouts of those same articles in a “Bail-Out Folder” for instant reference and light reading when the next “big blow” threatens. The NEXT ONE? It could be next week, or next month or next year, but build the folder; they will come! Meanwhile, you will have a great source of hurricane survival lore.

As far as Firewise is concerned, What Gets Wet, Will Dry Out. The cool, dry winds of cold fronts will follow Hurricane Season, providing unlimited OXYGEN. All the dry, downed vegetation will serve nicely as unlimited FUEL. For a source of IGNITION (lightning, matches, a hot auto exhaust pipe, etc, (Remember the FIRE TRIANGLE) will explain the birth and structure of that devilish wildland fire.

What can you do to help protect your property and possessions from WILDFIRES?

1. Don’t discard cigarette butts on the streets or grounds of TGO.

2. Pick up deadfall from your trees and shrubs and deposit it out front, roadside, not in the conservation area behind your property.

3. Be FIREWISE and help make your property safe:

a. Create a defensive space around your property.

b. Pick up dead palm fronds and “boot jacks.”

c. Put out yard waste for collection by CSA.

d. Eliminate “ladder fuels:” plantings that can allow a ground fire to extend to tree tops and climb exterior walls to the roof.

e. Keep rain gutters and down spouts free of debris accumulation.

f. Increase use of fire resistant building materials when repairing or upgrading external construction.

g. Pick up and read Firewise literature at the CSA office and the Nature Center.

Alligator Robb Some Great Info On Snakes

After the recent visit by Hurricane Ian, there’s no doubt the local snake population will be looking for dry ground, so here is some information from our good friend, Alligator Robb.

Good day once again Great Outdoorsians! This is Frank “Alligator” Robb back to share some more tidbits of wildlife knowledge. I sincerely hope my last note found each and all of you happy and healthy. Our last discussion was just a little peek into the extraordinary attributes and benefits of the American Alligator, which we will build upon another time. Today I hope to discuss another topic that is also a favorite of mine, snakes.

Snakes have gotten a bad rep from the very beginning. As soon as Adam and Eve had the run-in with the serpent in the Garden of Eden, they have been on the wrong side of most everyone’s affection. But I digress! Snakes are a vital part of our ecosystem. Think of snakes first and foremost as scaled epidemiologists. Snakes seek out many of the animals in our local environment that are disease vectors.

Ok, there I go again, getting a little out of control on the terminology, so let me back track for a minute. Let’s consider a few of our most common species of snakes on the Space Coast and get into some details on each of them.

The most common snake on the Space Coast is the Black Racer. You have all likely seen them in your yards. They are a black snake with a white chin. They have a translucency to their color, which is a biological property of the skin. These guys will eat everything…. mice, toads, frogs, birds, fish and even other snakes. Their favorite seems to be lizards, that’s just what they tell me, it’s possible it was a story to throw me off. They are a super visual snake with HUGE eyes. They are excellent climbers and have no issues in shrubs, vines and trees.

Next in line would be the Yellow Rat Snake. This is a golden colored snake that has four darker colored lines

running the length of it. Some call them a chicken snake, due to their propensity to be around chicken coops. That’s for several reasons; they love bird eggs and where you find chickens, you typically find rats. Well, yeah, and eggs too, of course. The Yellow Rat is Florida’s second largest native species when full grown and can top 8 feet in length. They are an arboreal species, which means they spend 99% of their lives in trees. It’s incredible to watch them meticulously work every limb and branch on a tree looking for a nest. These guys, when fully grown, have no problems whatsoever in catching and consuming a full-grown grey tree squirrel. That’s quite the accomplishment! I should also mention that there are Yellows that occasionally have red pupils and a red tongue. Very neat when you see this!

After the Yellow Rat Snake would be the Red Rat Snake. Some will mistakenly call what we have a Rosy Red Rat Snake, which would be incorrect, as that’s a subspecies in the Everglades. Our Red Rat snake can grow to about 6 feet in length and, just like the Yellow, can be in many shades and variations. The Red has a black and white checked bottom, with darker chevrons on the top. This snake, like nearly every non-venomous species we have, has vertical lines that look like stitches on its mouth.

Now, you need to take something into account here. We have many snakes here on the Space Coast that I hope to eventually discuss with you in future articles. Or maybe

even in person sometime if you can make it to one of our presentations. NONE of our snakes are going to chase you. Lord knows, I sure wish they would. It would make my life and the research I do so much easier. They do everything they can to avoid interaction with us. This does not mean if you have one scared or cornered, they are not going to defend them selves. Everything bites. Heck, humans have the nastiest bite of about any animal on the planet. So don’t hold being defensive against them. On that same note, ALL snakes will rattle their tails in a defensive display!

I like to tell people, “If you know your four venomous species, you can play with everything else.” Please under stand my joke and don’t go around picking up snakes. There are other species that, while not venomous, are not some thing you want chewing on you. I speak from experience of providing lots of lipstick for snakes. But this is NEVER going to happen if you are not putting yourself in the situation.

Snakes are also interesting in the fact that some lay eggs and some give live birth. Next time someone tries to tell you they found rattlesnake eggs… please keep in mind they give live birth.

I hope this will bring a little bit of insight into the few more common snakes we have locally. I love lots more than just reptiles. Some of my favorites are Opossums and Spotted Skunks and my personal army of Shelties. Looking forward to the next opportunity to share with y’all!

Our four venomous species are, the Coral Snake (forget about rhymes and stories and just remember coral snakes have a black head), Water Moccasin (very likely not what you are seeing, as the most misidentified snake in the world is the Banded Water Snake. BTW, all of our venomous snakes do, other than the coral snake!), Diamondback Rat tlesnake (Once you see one you will never mistake it again, beautiful, bright, large diamonds and feathered scales) and the Pygmy Rattlesnake (Juvenile Black Racers are al most always misidentified as this; most of ours all have an orange line running down the back and all have that same horizontal eye stripe). WWW of TGO A Group for Widows

WWW of TGO is an organization being formed to connect and support widows who live in TGO. This will be a group formed for and by women who have lost their partner. It can be too easy to slowly withdraw and find yourself isolated. WWW is an opportunity to get connected to others who understand and to find opportunities to get out and enjoy life again.

Best Pumpkin Muffins

Here’s an idea... It’s October so let’s eat some pumpkin treats. These pumpkin muffins are moist, buttery, soft and loaded with fragrant fall spices with just the right amount of sweetness. Use fresh or canned pumpkin to make these easy pumpkin muffins – no mixer required. Feel free to drop off some at the Happenings office in the Manor!

INGREDIENTS

15 oz pumpkin puree

½ cup salted butter melted

¾ cup light brown sugar packed

¾ cup granulated sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice

2 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp fine sea salt

1 cup mix-ins (optional) chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, nuts, dried fruit, etc.

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2. Grease a standard 12-cup muffin tin, set aside.

3. In a small bowl, mix together flour, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon, baking powder and sea salt. Set aside.

4. In a large bowl whisk together pumpkin puree and melted butter until smooth.

5. Add brown sugar and granulated sugar and whisk until combined and no lumps.

6. Add eggs and vanilla and stir to combine.

7. Add dry ingredients and stir until batter is smooth.

8. If desired, add mix-ins like chocolate chips, cinnamon chips, walnuts, etc. and stir until evenly distributed.

9. Pour ¼ cup of the pumpkin muffin batter into each well of the muffin tin, and smooth out the top.

10. Bake in preheated oven for 22-25 minutes, or until the tops are set and a cake tested inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean or with a few crumbs.

11. Let pumpkin muffins cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove them and transfer muffins to a wire rack to cool completely.

TGO Clown Alley

Our TGO Clown Alley was in rare form last Friday as they showed up with their bag of tricks and invaded Jerry’s Ice Cream Truck. Turns out Jerry is quite a clown himself and demonstrated his juggling skills. Clown Eddy showed up with his squirt gun to patrol the scene while Captain Juggles kept his balls in the air. Ember represented our Titusville Fire Department and Cutie Patootie showed off her pet squirrel. The ice cream patrons loved the clowns’ antics.
