Like most of us here, we were curious about what actually happens down on Raccoon Drive at the Wastewater Plant. We decided to take a field trip to satisfy our curiosity and discovered three amazing people who operate a very important part of our community. The process of wastewater is one that every resident in the park should understand and know how it relates to our everyday lives. Meet Ray, Chris and Eric, the team who makes sure our sewer system keeps flowing and our reclaimed water is always up to standard. See page 22.

The 2022 Florida Today Best Of The Best O cial Community Choice Awards has awarded our TGO Golf Course the BEST golf course on the Space Coast. Through a public nomination and voting process, more than 200 communities choose the best of the best. We are proud to receive this well deserved award and know that all the hard work done by Shane Willey and his crew, along with Chuck Kandt, our golf pro, have made this possible. The Blue Heron Restaurant was also a finalist for the Best All-Around Restaurant award. Congratulations to everyone!

Fall is also the time for budgeting. In the coming weeks, I will meet individually with all CSA managers and supervisors to gather their budget requests and begin to compile a responsible, realistic budget for 2023. Budget priorities in 2023 will include remaining a competitive employer in a tough job market, maintaining our building exteriors, improving our roads, and servicing our 30-year-old irrigation system. The 2023 budget will also include a plan to further strengthen our reserves to prepare TGO for a golf course renovation in 2024.
I met with one of our long-time owners last week to discuss some concerns. She is seeing many new people in our community, who are renting from private owners and are unfamiliar with our many TGO rules and guidelines. I wish to remind our owners that our Board of Directors created a small booklet called “A Short and Helpful Reference for Living in TGO.” This booklet was just updated this year. Printed copies are available for free here in the CSA o ce and the information is also found online at www.TGOCSA.org. If you rent your property, please ensure your renters have received and read this booklet. The information in the booklet is valuable to any newcomer here at TGO.
TGO has once again partnered with our local Titusville Walgreens Pharmacy, located at US1 and Cheney Highway, to o er a Flu Shot Clinic onsite here at TGO on Friday, September 30, from 1:30 - 3:30 pm in The Manor. Flu vaccines protect you by reducing the risk of getting and transmitting the flu. The vaccines also conserve scarce healthcare resources during an especially tough time for health care providers. CSA O ce will be reserving the times - TGO residents and family who wish to receive the flu vaccine during this event. Space is limited. Simply call our CSA o ce at 321-268-9767 and we will register you for this event.

OWNERS! Our TGO Golf Course just earned the title of “Best of The Best” on the Space Coast in 2022! Undoubtedly, the key to this success is the hard work done by our golf maintenance team and golf shop team, led by Shane Willey and Chuck Kandt. It makes me so proud to see our course stand out among the 27 golf courses in Brevard County, and I wish to thank all who voted and supported this award. This recognition will help our course keep its forward momentum as we plan for a major course renovation in the year 2024. You’ll find more photos regarding the awards and gala inside this issue of The Happenings.
Last week all of us wished Jay Wilson from our Recreation Team a goodbye and good luck. He decided to take a job closer to his home in the Melbourne area as he continues to make progress toward his ultimate goal, to attend the Police Academy and become a law enforcement o cer. We wish Jay the very best in his new endeavors.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.
• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.
The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first tra c signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.
Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!
• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.
Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property
The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (o for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process e cient, please follow these important rules:
14Community
Service Animal Rules
According to Florida Statues under Social Welfare, Chapter 413, Section 08, Paragraph D - “Service Animal” means an animal that is trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability. The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the sacksigns.lunch
• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.
Information & Notices
CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules
• Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.
CSA Trash Pick Up Rules
Walgreens Flu Clinic
• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.
• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.
Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.
Walgreens has agreed to come to TGO on Friday, September 30 at 1:30 pm in the Manor to o er a free Flu Shot Clinic. Call CSA to reserve a time - 321-268-9767. Bring your insurance card, information forms will be completed upon arrival. Mark your calendars!
• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.
• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!
We would like to thank everyone who voted for our golf course and made this award possible.
Congratulations to the Blue Heron Restaurant - a finalist in the best all-around restaurant category.
Congratulations to all the employees at the TGO Golf Course plus all TGO residents. You can be proud to know that our golf course has been selected the Best Of The Best on The Space Coast.

There’s a lot of refuse that travels down to the wastewater plant. Not only from your toilet but also the debris that collects on the streets and runs into the drains. The process to separate the solids from the liquid is what our wastewater plant is all about.
22
Why exactly do we have our own waste system verses using Titusville’s or Cocoa’s system?
Ray has worked at the plant for over 14 years and lives in the house on the property; a vital benefit in case of an emergency. He oversees the entire operation, working closely with Chris and Eric.
ManagementWastewater Team
When the park first started, did the wastewater plant start with it or did it come later? I know that records show that the wastewater plant was established in the mid-80’s, but the plant was only half the size it is today. It has grown with the growth of the park. The park was originally a golf course with a limited number of RV sites and the wastewater system was very basic.
What exactly is a Wastewater Management Plant? Every city in America has one... a management system to recycle your waste into irrigation water and sludge. Though we’re not a city, TGO is big enough to have their own - and it’s definitely a cost e ective solution for our park.
o for a field trip to the TGO Wastewater Management Plant located at the south of the park on Raccoon Drive. If you’ve traveled along the Nature Trail, then you have most likely caught a glimpse of the plant. You might have seen the “Do Not Enter” sign, or the house that sits just on the other side of the fence. We’ve been here almost a decade and it’s always been a mystery to us so we went to find out what’s behind that Do Not Enter sign.
Give us a breakdown on how the entire system works. The water and waste from our homes enter the sewer system, and is pushed through a series of lift stations and sent by gravity to this wastewater plant where we are now. For the most part, gravity takes the sewage from your homes, with the help of lift stations. They are positioned at the lowest places in the system and they pump the water up to the higher levels so gravity can be used to keep the sewage on
The process starts with you, in your motor home or house bathroom, plus your kitchen and laundry sinks. It’s a journey that doesn’t get described very often, but we can assure you it’s way more complex than you might have imagined.Weset
Since TGO is not within Titusville city limits, that was not an option. The logistics to utilize Cocoa was basically prohibitive from both a cost and geographical standpoint. There would also be been taxation issues to consider.
Doing our best Mike Rowe imitation, here is what we discovered through a series of questions with Ray, Chris and Eric.
Eric is the pup in the group, he has been here eight years, but we can tell you, he knows a lot about the bioscience of the operation. Part of his duties are to maintain the nine lift stations throughout the park, another vital part of the waste journey. More on these lift stations later in the Q & A section.
First, we can tell you we met three of the nicest people you’ll ever meet in this park. Ray Dittemer, the Wastewater Plant Manager; Chris Conaway, the Wastewater Lead Technician, and Eric Wells, the Wastewater Supervisor. All three of them work in unison to keep the plant flowing.
The alternative to not have our own management plant would be to operate on a septic system. Not the best choice when you consider how they deteriorate over time plus the tra c coming in and out to clean out the individual systems. Remember, we have over 1,600 lots. That’s a lot of maintenance and wear and tear on our roads.
Chris has been here for about 12 years. He works on everything mechanical and electrical - and believe us, when you take a close look at the control panels that keep the plant operating - that is no easy task.
filtration system where solids are prevented from continuing. The last stage of the process is neutralization, where the final e uent (processed water) is introduced to sodium hypochlorite (bleach) which will completely neutralize bacteria, viral matter and other living microscopic in the system. The e uent is then pumped to the reservoir for irrigation.
So... Where does the sludge go?
After a thickening process the sludge goes through a coagulation process using polymers, then we bring the solid concentration up to 30%, which is a little moister that a dirt clod. This is cake sludge, and that is sent to the landfill in Cocoa. 30,000 gallons of wastewater creates about nine tons of cake sludge. We transfer the sludge to Cocoa via our dump truck. The rest of the liquid goes to our evaporation pond.
its way to the plant. Manholes are used as an access point for the sewer system to allow for inspection, maintenance and upgrades.Thewastewater enters the plant system through the bar screen, which prevents larger debris from entering the system. Then it enters the equalization basin where it is both aerated and mixed. It is then pumped to the first of our two stage bay system. In aeration bay #1, the raw wastewater is mixed with the return activated sludge. The mixing is accomplished using di used air, which also provides oxygen for microorganism growth. In bay #2 the mixing and oxygenation continues, then the liquid goes to the clarification tanks where the solid portion settles to the bottom and is either pumped out as waste sludge or returned to bay #1 as activated sludge. The liquid travels from the clarification system to filtration, where it passes through a cloth media
Ray Dittemer and Eric Wells stand on top of the reclamation tanks. Each bay holds up to 88,000 gallons. On average it takes a little less than a week for the water to go through the whole purification cycle. The solids stay longer, the liquids goes through faster, but they retain some solids which contain good biology that they put in with the fresh waste coming in, to help keep the system going.

We have to maintain our licenses and do our Continuing Education to keep in compliance. We answer to the FDEP (Florida Department of Environmental Protection). We have to do monthly reports and submit them. They want to know about our reuse. They want to make sure we are staying within the perimeters of allowed levels of solids, which is based on parts per millions, to make sure our e uent is at acceptable levels.
We are now fully permitted and the FDEP will come out and inspect everything. The community is really good and we have a good system. We’ve kept things modern and it is an e cient system. I’m glad we have a good budget. It makes it easy for the FDEP to check up because everything is up to date and it makes for an excellent wastewater system.
RiddleAnswer:Abarber
30,000... That’s a lot of gallons!
Just so our readers will know, none of the reclamation water gets anywhere near the inside of the Blue Tower. Absolutely not! The blue tower is for potable water that comes from Cocoa and doesn’t have anything to do with the wastewater plant.
If people feel they have to use the chemicals that kill the microbiology, we ask them to please not introduce them to the TGO main sewer system. Please use the dump station by the manor which is for those chemicals. That goes to a special processing plant. If you ruin the microbiology in our system, we might have to buy seed sludge from a healthy plant, which is a cost to the community. It also makes our job harder.
This is a view of the evaporation pond. After the reclaimed water is sent to the irrigation pond up by the driving range and the sludge is trucked to Cocoa, the remaining liquid is sent to this evaporation pond. Not a great place to fish!
What can we share with the RV community that they should be aware of to not dump into our sewer system? That’s an important question. Things that kill the biology in your RV tank are usually bad for our system. We need that biology to help the solids settle better. When people dump chemicals that kill the necessary biology it reduces our ability to separate and can make it more di cult to be in compliance. If our separating process isn’t good, then the filters have to work too hard and now we could have an unbalanced solids to water ratio.
There are two types of water in TGO. The drinking or potable water in the blue tower at the front of the park, and the reclaimed water used for irrigation. The reclaimed water comes from the lakes, rain, and most importantly, from the wastewater management plant on Raccoon Drive.
To an outsider, this process sounds pretty scientific and complex. What are your qualification for doing all this? We are all licensed from the state. It’s a combination of on the job training and book study. We have to get our licenses renewed every two years. Eric has a C license, I’ve got a B license (the B license includes an advanced, in-depth examination of wastewater collection systems, along with administration and organization, safety/survival knowledge, inflow and infiltration, and sewer rehabilitation.)
Yes, the park produces about 30,000 gallons a week during peak season. We’ll sometimes send three truckloads of cake sludge to Cocoa each week.

Chris Conaway (left) is responsible for everything mechanical and electrical, while Eric Wells oversees the nine lift stations throughout TGO. He also helps maintain the manholes to ensure the flow is not obstructed. Hurricanes and lots of rain can a ect the flow rates. Both Chris and Eric, along with Ray are responsible for processing all that extra water. Electrical storms can also knock out parts of the system, which is where Chris jumps in to either repair or bypass the

The Creek Fire was a wildfire that started in Northern California on September 4, 2020, near Shaver Lake. It was finally extinguished three months later on December 24, 2020. The cause is undetermined (probably lightning). 379,895 acres were burned, 856 buildings were destroyed. Amazingly there were no human fatalities! Twenty-six non-fatal injuries including 14 firefighters! The fire necessitated the rescue of hundreds of people by National Guard helicopters. The Creek Fire destroyed 856 buildings and totaled a fire suppression cost of $193 million. Why should you care? How does this relate to you and TGO?

Like you, the Californians who lived on the ridgelines that got burned out, lived on the Urban Wildland Interface (UWI), a zone where wildland and human living and working space meet and overlap. Like you, they loved the environment, the views, the smells, the wildlife. Oh, to live and work in paradise! Then a wildfire stopped by to tragically reshape that environment and the “paradise.”

Situational Awareness Could Save Your Life by Ed Brown
Our Firewise Program is coordinated by The Great Outdoors Firewise Committee.
The reason for this article and ones like it that stress the unpleasant realities of living in a UWI is to increase your awareness. The military would use the term SITUATIONAL AWARENESS (SA). This is your #1 survival skill. When you check the TV or your weather radio for the day’s weather prediction, you are exercising your SA. This is not di cult. You just have to remember to do it, to make it a habit. It applies to a multitude of activities, from brewing a cup of “Joe,” to stepping o the curb and crossing a street, to coming to a complete stop for a TGO STOP SIGN! There are tricks for increasing SA, but we will save them for a future Firewise article. In the meantime, pay attention to weather reports and updates for Hurricane Preparations (see recent editions of The Happenings). Reference tornadoes, like hurricanes, and you will either hunker down in a central room, away from windows or get the heck out of TGO!

TGO FIREWISE INFORMATION
Remember, you must have written permission to remove any living shrubs or trees beyond your property line. Contact CSA if you have questions about removal and consult the Architectural Review Board before making landscape changes.
In the Creek Fire, residents who were aware of the approaching fiery menace took the two-lane road out of town and out of danger. They exercised the #2 survival skill: AVOIDANCE. They Evacuated! Behind them, the smoking piles of gray ash that had once been their homes and businesses on “The Ridge” marked their passing.

TGO our pickle ball courts are free. So is the shu e board, and the tennis court and the swimming pools. But, did you know that we have a free Photo Tour Guide service too? It is NANCY’S PHOTO TOUR SERVICE! - I just now made up that name.

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker
I was watching the news last night and at 11 minutes before 7:00, I swear the TV screen switched to a commercials only station. So I decided that is what I needed to do with SnapShot. I needed to publish an advertisement for an important service we have that you many not know about. So, I said to myself, this is the perfect time for me to present to you Nancy Presant. She needs to be advertised. You need to know about the remarkable service she o ers to the TGO community.Sure,at
See some of Nancy’s past tours in the box to the right. Nancy said, “Wildlife is everywhere in TGO and Central Florida, but the tours we arrange also focus on providing some variety. Street photography (people doing daily things) is very popular. I also like photographing landscapes, cemetery scenes, and images of abandoned and dilapidated buildings and other reminders of the past.
This fall I will organize new tours and some replays of ones we have done in the past. Also, I am constantly researching interesting workshops and classes to attend. For example, I found a workshop called “Zoo Photography Techniques.” This is an exciting opportunity to learn techniques to take great zoo photos! Experience the thrill of capturing amazing animal moments - Saturday, November 19, 2022. Get on my mailing list for details.
It is a service that spends hours researching the Internet, scanning local papers, and making many phone calls to find interesting places to visit and photograph around TGO and Central Florida. Places with wildlife, parades, festivals, classes, history, and more. Then the service takes care of all the arrangements of letting people know, organizing transportation, planning an agenda, collecting entrance fees if required, and finding dinner reservations if appropriate. The service encourages photographers with years of experience to join the tour and stand willing to answer questions about how to compose a specific photo situation, how to use camera settings, or how to try a video shot. I call it a seamless experience where Nancy takes care of all the details and you can focus on photography and socializing.
I so enjoy doing this. TGO people are special. They all want to help, you never feel intimidated by those truly experienced photographers...

I so enjoy doing this. TGO people are special. They all want to help, you never feel intimidated by those truly experienced photographers - they want to help. It has made my life. Many have told me the tours really turned them onto photography, showed them how special our area is, and they look forward to being with people who have some of their special photo interests - even if it is photographing cemeteries or dilapidated buildings. “My wife and I visited Contentment Hearing Care because of recommendations by others in our community. The facility environment was friendly, convenient, and inviting. Tom Contento, explained about hearing loss and why something should be done to improve hearing to prevent or lessen some of the side effects of continuing hearing impairment. A series of tests were performed to determine the nature and types of hearing loss and the results were thorough ly explained to us in layman's terms, which made it very easy to understand and to make decisions. We are extremely pleased with the results and would highly recommend Contentment Hearing Care to others.”

STOP SIGNS - Let’s make sure we obey them
Please remember that like our speed limit signs, stop signs are not a suggestion... they are a rule that everyone must follow - even the golf carts and bicycles. You can receive a tra c violation to the tune of $50 or more for this violation, so please take an extra couple of seconds, come to a complete stop behind the sign, and look both ways before proceeding. This will help keep everyone, including yourself, safe. Activities
A stop sign is one of our most valuable and e ective tra c control devices when used at the right place. Here at TGO we have numerous stop signs in locations where they are vitally important to obey. Some intersections can be very dangerous not only for vehicle accidents but much worse if a golf cart, bicycle, or a pedestrian is hit by a car.

WE NEED YOU
Bring the kids - they’ll have a great time and they’ll learn about how important it is to maintain our ponds. Hope to see you there... Thank You!
Over the past year, we conducted 50/50 drawings at several of our TGO golf events. Due to the participation of many of you, we were able to sponsor a child through the Save the Children organization. Meet Krizel Joy, a 13-year-old from the Philippines. Her birthday is in September, and she has indicated on her profile that she would like to become a nurse. Wouldn’t it be great if the TGO community had a part in helping her dream come true? We can make a di erence at TGO, even if it’s through a single child thousands of miles away.
John Roberts needs our help to distribute 1,175 fi ngerling catfi sh throughout our 32 ponds.
We suggest you wear boots, a hat for shade and some sunscreen.
70
Your Support Can Make A Di erence
I would like to invite you to compose a short note to Krizel and introduce yourself and the TGO community. You may choose either a written correspondence or an e-mail. We plan on sending all your messages to Krizel at the end of September. Drop o any written correspondence in the golf shop or send an e-mail my way to tgogolfpro@tgocsa.com. There will be a time lag in getting info to and from Krizel due to translation requirements and the remoteness of her location.
Thank you for your support - Chuck Kandt - Golf Pro
Simply show up at the west side of Lake Judy and we’ll provide you with the buckets and directions.
It’s time to restock our ponds and we need volunteers! join us on September 23 at 10:00 am.
