The Great Outdoors Security Team

The Great Outdoors is proud of its state-of-the-art automated visitor management system. Residents install a barcode on their vehicles which allows them to bypass the visitor’s lane and have instant access to the community. CSA installs a barcode for residents on their vehicles (Community Services Association) and permits them to activate/deactivate barcodes as needed and allows them to verify who enters the resident’s gate. CSA also provides a voice and email automated system for residents to call in infrequent visitors who have not been put on their guest list (usually family members).

Todd Sampson is the gate supervisor/manager and coordinates schedules with five other gate personnel to manage our 24-hour gated community. Todd started working with the CSA maintenance crew over 11 years ago, moving over to the Gate Manager position nine years ago after acquiring a degree in criminal justice. Continued on page 36

Blue Heron’s Space Photo Exhibit

Titusville has space research in its veins - it is our heritage. The first chapter in space exploration began in July 1950 right here at Cape Canaveral and NASA was formed in 1958. These wall decorations are designed to help TGO keep that heritage forefront.

Studying space and the solar system gives us insights into gravity, the atmosphere, the evolution of planets, and much more. We learn that the human race has a common origin that transcends gender, race, ethnicity, and religion.

With these understandings, we can better plan a future that solves challenges like resource sustainability, overpopulation, global warming, and creating peaceful lifestyles for our rapidly changing diverse population.

Dear TGO Community,

We are at the peak of our busy season now and it’s wonderful seeing our community bustling with activities. Recent spring-like weather has our residents outside enjoying The Great Outdoors.

Daylight Savings Time arrives next weekend, Sunday, March 13 at 2:00 am followed by the offi cial beginning of Spring on Saturday, March 20. I expect this recent warm weather to trigger the growth of your lawns and landscaping. The next TruGreen treatment of liquid fertilizer and herbicide is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, March 15 and 16. The previous January treatment, along with cold weather, should’ve knocked back weed growth, so I expect this March treatment and the warmer weather to push out healthy grass and cause your lawns to flourish.

CSA is adopting a new mass communications system called AlertMedia. We will conduct the first community-wide email test of this system on Tuesday morning, March 8. The reason we are switching to AlertMedia (from former Vesta Communications) is ease of use, better reliability, reporting improvements, and overall look of the product. The email test will come from “The Great Outdoors Community Services Association” but the email address may also say no-reply@ alertmedia.com. Mass emails from our current system come from tgocsa@dccnotify.com. Please be sure to accept this new email so you can continue to receive important notifications from the CSA office. Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated, and feedback instructions will be sent in the upcoming test email.

Let’s celebrate the opening of our newly renovated Library, Game Room and Bathhouse. You are invited to stop by the Library on Monday, March 7, between 10: 00 am to 12:00 pm for an open house, to tour this newly renovated amenity and visit with members of the Buildings and Planning committee who helped plan the renovation. If you stop by, you can enter a drawing for a chance to win a TGO-themed door prize basket.

Liberty University’s Wind Symphony Orchestra will be performing at the Manor on Wednesday, March 16, at 7:00 pm and this performance is open to all TGO residents with no admission charge. The Orchestra, directed by Dr. Richard Kerr, is the recipient of several National music awards and will be stopping here along their annual southern tour. It is comprised of 56 talented student musicians. If you wish to attend, PLEASE call the CSA office at 321-268-9767 and reserve space for your party. Our CSA office team will add you to the list and give you further instructions on the concert.

The CSA Safety Committee will host our 3rd annual complimentary Shred Day for TGO residents on Thursday, March 24, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the parking lot north of The Manor. This is a drive-through event, and safety committee volunteers will be on hand to assist you with boxes. More information and directions are available at the CSA office.

These past few weeks our CSA grounds team continues to trim back overgrown vegetation along our roads, in common areas and behind homes throughout TGO. Our drainage team is taking advantage of this drier, cooler weather to clean out and reshape our surface drainage pathways in preparation for the summer storm season. On page 18 you will find a picture of a 30 foot palm root system that was clogging a 4-inch drain pipe around 297 Plantation. Please contact us if you have any surface drainage concerns as we prepare our community for another rainy season.

Owners are encouraged to attend all the Board of Director meetings. Green Speaker cards are available if an owner wishes to address the board for three minutes about any issue. An informational packet with the meeting agenda is given to each household that attends. Prior to the meeting, the agenda is posted on official bulletin boards and shown on our TV Community Channel 732. The actual meeting is televised LIVE on this same channel. CSA Board of Directors meetings are held on the third Wednesday from October through May. Planning meetings to set the agenda for the Board of Directors meetings are scheduled October to May on the second Wednesday of the month in the Plantation Manor at 10:00 am. They are open to attend for any TGO owner.

District Meetings

There are ten CSA voting districts at The Great Outdoors. They are non-geographical, but are determined by the last digit in each property’s street address. The District Meetings are held monthly from October through May. Various districts join together to hold combined monthly meetings. There are two meetings per month with five districts in each one. Please note the upcoming meeting schedule if you want to attend your district meeting.

The President’s Council includes the presidents of the eighteen Condominium Associations plus the Addison Preserve and Fairways Homeowners Associations.

At an informal meeting held on the third Tuesday from November through April, they get information on changes in Florida state law, compare notes on issues affecting the condo associations, work on budgets and discuss other operational topics. The Great Outdoors Premier RV/Golf Resort Architectural Review Committee

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the next ARC Meetings will be held on the following Wednesday dates at 10:00 am on the Plantation Manor Porch: March 16 • April 6 • April 27

The Architectural Review Committee meets for planning purposes on the Plantation Manor Porch at 10:00 am on the Monday before an ARC meeting.

All changes to your property that are visible on the outside require advance approval from the Architectural Review Committee. Application forms and ARC Guidelines may be obtained from the Community Services Association office or printed from The Great Outdoors Community Services Association website at www.tgocsa.org. All completed ARC forms must be submitted to the CSA office by Noon on the Wednesday before the next Wednesday meeting. Results will be available to pick up after the ARC meeting or from the CSA Office. Be sure ALL necessary paperwork is included with your ARC application. No approval will be given without having all the required data available at the ARC Meeting for review.

TGO property owners are encouraged to suggest modifications to the ARC Guidelines, which will be discussed during an annual review. Please submit them to the ARC Secretary, in writing, no later in the year than October 1.

CSA DUES PAYMENT

The Second Quarter Maintenance Assessment for 2022 will be due April 1. Please drop off your payment of $900 at the CSA Office or mail it to: The Great Outdoors at 100-D Plantation Drive, Titusville, Florida 32780. You can also fill out a form to have your payment drawn directly from your bank account. The payment must be received by 5:00 pm on April 21, 2022 or there will be a $25 late fee.

Opening for Owners on the Infrastrure Committe

There is an opening for owners who wish to serve on the Infrastructure Committee. There is an application that needs to be completed to apply for committees. It is in the CSA Office or online on the website. Go to www.tgocsa.org

Automated Visitor Call-In

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call 321-383-8802, no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. This system cannot confirm that your request was received or respond to any additional messages.

TGO Comunity Channel

Our television channel for Community Services Association and other information about The Great Outdoors can be viewed using a digital TV tuned to Channel 732 on the Spectrum Cable TV system. The TV must be equipped with a Spectrum TV cable box or digital adapter.

CSA Trouble Calls - 321-268-9767

If you have questions about lawn spraying, getting sprinklers adjusted, or any other services provided by the Community Services Association, residents should contact the CSA Office by email at service@ tgocsa.org or call 321-268-9767 to mention your concerns.

Golf Cart Gas - Monday - Friday - 9:00 - 11:00 am

The Community Services Association offers gasoline at the CSA Maintenance Area for TGO residents’ Golf Carts. Fill-up time is Monday through Friday from 9:00 - 11:00 am. The gas price is based on the prevailing rate charged to the CSA. Payment is CASH ONLY.

Vehicle Barcodes

If your vehicle needs a barcode installed, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767 to schedule a REQUIRED appointment. They install them everyday, but will not do “walk-in” applications. If you need a barcode installed on your Recreational Vehicle, they’ll install RV barcodes on Fridays ONLY, and they want to visit your home or RV site to hopefully complete that barcode installation without moving your RV.

TruGreen regularly applies spray applications to our lawns and common areas that includes an herbicide for weed control, a liquid fertilizer, and an insecticide to kill chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects. These applications are scheduled in 2022 as follows: March 15 & 16, May 17 & 18, July 12 & 13, October 4 & 5, and November 29 & 30

TruGreen is also offering “service-call” visits to TGO. If you are still having problems with lawn pests or weeds, call the CSA Office at 321-268-9767, and we will put your address on the TruGreen list. They will make additional visits on the following 2022 dates: April 7 & 21, May 5, June 2 & 16, July 28, August 11 & 25, September 8 & 22, October 20, November 10, and December 15.

TruGreen advises all TGO residents to stay off treated areas of your lawn, and to keep your pets off treated areas, until the application has thoroughly dried.

AED Basics (Automated External Defibrillator) Have Someone Call 9-1-1 While You Operate AED

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks.

AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts.

The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

TGO has seven AEDs located at CSA buildings.

Contractor Restrictions

Contractors employed for repairs, construction, renovation, or installation at residences that are in The Great Outdoors are not allowed to work on Sunday, except in an emergency or with the advance permission of the CSA.

From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from Oc tober 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30.

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street.

Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

• Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

Photo Club Reception

The Southern Classics Car Club will parade antique cars through TGO on Saturday, March 12, beginning approximately 11 am. This parade will be led by our Courtesy Patrol Team and will follow the same route as our annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade. We would like to thank Eddie Shea for bringing this popular parade to TGO for the 3rd annual year. This year, following the parade, the classic cars and their owners will gather in our large Manor parking lot so you can take a closer look at the cars and talk shop with the owners. Jerry the Ice Cream Man will also have his truck there to buy ice cream.

While you are driving around for the Yard Sale, make sure to stop by the Manor as The Photo Club will be holding their annual Photo Gallery Reception March 5 from 10 am - 2 pm on the Manor Porch. 1) Our CSA Grounds Crewmembers Mark Grey and Jeff Miller are collecting the trimmings from our common areas and roadways and hauling this vegetation away.

2) CSA Drainage technicians Phillip Wolf and Lucas Hapeman helped clean up the area around the Propane Tank west of the CSA building and laid some clean white gravel around both sides of the tank.

3) Phillip and Lucas were busy this week - they were troubleshooting some drainage problems in the yard of 297 plantation when they discovered 30 plus feet of palm roots that grew into the 4” pipe.

4) Next time you see Jeannine White and Taylor Hardy cruising around TGO to keep our amenities clean, make sure to shout out a big “Hello.” They are both members of our CSA custodial team that helps keep the park clean for you.

The tasks may include, but are not limited to, guiding a person who is visually impaired or blind, alerting a person who is deaf or hard of hearing, pulling a wheelchair, assisting with mobility or balance, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, retrieving objects, or performing other special tasks. A service animal is not a pet. Only Service Animals are allowed in TGO buildings, no other animals are permitted. Please obey the signs.

WE’RE BACK! Men, mark your calendars with the dates for the upcoming 2022 Men’s Breakfasts. The dates are: March 19 • April 16

We will be offering a tasty breakfast of eggs, potatoes, meat, pancakes or biscuits and gravy, fruit, orange juice and coffee or tea, catered by Kelly’s Cuisine, all for only $10.00 each. We eat at 8:00 am followed by some informative speakers who will educate us and then off er some great opportunities to ask questions. In March, we have the return of our most asked-for speaker, Laurilee Thompson, Owner of Dixie Crossroads, and a knowledgeable advocate for saving our ecology. Our April speaker will be TGO resident Dick Dean. He is a pioneer in Christian radio and television in Pennsylvania. Brian’s Eagle Nest Update 4 : On February 15, Brian provided the following update: We have three eaglets in the Watson Trail nest again this year! They're getting large enough that an adult is no longer closely guarding them but still flying nearby. We saw the biggest eaglet stretching wings on Fridays walk to the nest viewing area. In the next couple weeks they'll be taking hop flights above the nest, playing games, and then short flights to nearby branches. A month from now they could be flying and ready to leave the nest a couple weeks after that, still depending on their parents for food while working on their skills.

One of our featured exhibitors, Elaine Williams, will be representing the Indian River Anthropological Society (IRAS), the local chapter of the Florida Anthropological Society. She is a board member and past president. She has a BA in anthropology (archaeology) from UCF and an MA in archaeology from Northwestern University where she attended under a National Science Foundation fellowship. Her specialty is prehistoric archaeology of North America and she has participated in excavations in Illinois, Virginia, and Florida. If people want, she can try to ID things they have found. Her exhibit will be about the prehistory of Brevard County.

Wildfi re Protection at TGO 2022 - A Team Eff ort by

Long before the first human inhabitants of Florida walked our woodlands, there were the pine woods. They were the dominant plant species, maintained by lightning–caused fire and supporting thousands of other plant and animal species. Then, in a short time, settlers moved in. There goes the neighborhood! They were encouraged by developers and local governments to buy and build in the pine woods. When threatened by Wildland Fires, they soon asked the local governments for Fire Protection. Welcome to the woodlands, SETTLER!

“Controlled Burns” were used to eliminate offending and dangerous vegetation and thereby protect valuable property. WHOOPS! They weren’t always “controlled,” as planned. Now termed “PRESCRIBED BURNS,” they are carefully researched and implemented to insure desired results. Some of the planning considerations:

• Humidity

• Wind Speed

• Wind Direction

• Area Hazards

• Impact of Smoke Downwind Of The Burn

• Assistance From Other Agencies

• Personnel & Equipment Needed

• Effect On Local Traffic

The St. Johns River Water Management District uses Prescribed Fire to reduce the possibility of dangerous wildfire while enhancing the land’s environmental quality. “Prescribed Fires Benefits include restoring and maintaining natural communities, reducing chances of destructive wildfires, perpetuating fire-adaptive plants and animals, cycling nutrients, controlling tree diseases and opening scenic vistas.”

Your job, if a wildland fire gets inside TGO (and it will), is to prepare your property beforehand:

1. Pick up leaves and branches on your lawn, under porches and on the roof.

2. Remove vines (ladder fuels) from trees (they can spread fire to your roof).

3. Clear rain gutters of leaf trash.

4. Stack vegetative waste curbside for CSA pick-up.

As you can see, keeping TGO Firewise and Safe is indeed a “Team Effort.” It starts with YOU!

The T.G. Carlson Nature Center building houses the Nature Center museum, library, meeting room and a kitchen. The building also has a climate controlled enclosed porch where you can relax, read a book or have a bug-free picnic lunch. The building is open to TGO residents, renters and their guests seven days a week from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. This building went from an old camp site to a new modern concrete building. The CSA also provides Courtesy Patrol officers who assist in making sure all vehicular traffic is confined to the designated areas. Non-owners are not allowed to ride through the resort without being accompanied by an owner or by being escorted by a member of The Welcome Center staff. Courtesy Patrol officers duties include enforcing speed limits throughout the park utilizing state authorized and calibrated radar and electronic signage. They also assist registered guests and renters with information regarding the resort’s amenities and rules and regulations.

At the Guard Shack, Todd and his security team each man different shifts to make sure there is 24 hour coverage. Kevin Connelly has been here for 7 years, Michael Anderson - 5, Untwan Robinson andBrodyHahn-3.

But there’s a lot more the Patrol Team does. They work with emergency vehicles that enter the park, they monitor the pool to make sure only our residents and their guests enjoy this benefit. They provide direction and escort RV renters to their sites. And, of course, they help search for the occassional lost pet.

Two other members of the patrol team, Joe DiGulio and Rick Reinish, were missing during the time we took these photos. We’re sure some of you have met these people - but maybe not under the best of circumstances. No matter, these patrol officers are an important part of keeping TGO a safe and secure place to live. Next time you see one of these troopers patroling in their silver security car, make sure to give them a thumbs up. Better yet, stop and take time to talk to them. They are great people!

Here are some numbers you might find interesting: In the peak season, approximately 400 visitors check in at the gate each day with about the same number of residents going in and out. That makes for well over 100,000 vehicles in a year. There are about 15 FedEx, UPS and Amazon vehicles per day. About 20 medical nurses and one emergency vehicle per day. And if you don’t have a drivers license or someone has not called you in, you’re not going to get into TGO. 36

The Blue Heron Space Photo Exhibit

Our lifestyles, already, are formed through the use of space exploration technology: cell phones, MRI scans, safe air travel, GPS traffic management, weather forecasting, and giant social media systems.

The dedicated wall space in the Blue Heron private dining room is aimed at making the heritage of our space exploration a point of pride at TGO.

The photos on the front wall were chosen to provide a peaceful atmosphere for folks meeting and eating. We wanted it to be so powerful that guests see it and know the theme, however we wanted it to be a background like the clouds in the sky and not be distracting to those while dining.

However, the two surfaces to the left were designed to be more dynamic and be a conversation starter. These walls will show the excitement of blast-off and images from NASA and other explorations like the Webb Telescope this summer. We hope to subtly change these left walls often with images and tidbits of information about space exploration then and now - conversation starters.

This approach to decorating the private dining room will help TGO keep our space exploration heritage forefront.

Getting to know the Jim & Gloria Brubaker

With backgrounds in computers, corporate management, and education, Gloria and Jim came to TGO in 2002. They loved TGO and the residents so much that they made TGO “home” almost immediately. Until this year Jim and Gloria had second homes. TGO now is their only “home.” They call this phase 4.

Since 1982, they have lived many lives. They had “homes” in seven states. Each move was driven by the desire for the excitement of new country and new people. Each “home” was in small communities with a lot of heritage in its veins.

In each community Jim and Gloria led neighborhood groups and businesses in the arts, community marketing, religious training, historical heritage preservation, and the application of computers.

The application of computers provided them the opportunity to live in rural Pennsylvania and the Hill Country of Texas. It also provided Jim a corporate office in Copenhagen, Denmark, and constant travel throughout Europe and the United states.

In TGO Jim participated in Doggie World, Golf, Tennis, Biking, Nature Center, Wood Shop, Radio Controlled Airplanes, and Photo Club. Gloria focused mainly on the arts - teaching rug hooking, becoming a wellknown multi-media artist, and managing the Blue Heron Art Gallery from 2015-2020.

Jim and Gloria are now looking forward to enjoying the 4th phase of life in TGO (Retirement with one home ). They will have more time to be involved in TGO activities and will have more time to travel to “homes” they do not own to enjoy their four children (Generation X) and five grandkids (Generation Z). They also plan to travel to enjoy other cultures - small community culture (Jim) and the culture of big city. They feel phase 4 will be the most exciting phase of their life.

The TGO Welcome Center

For RVers who rent lots inside TGO, the Welcome Center is where they check in. They are met by either Nancy Kuzma or Wendy Shimski; both have worked here for several years. They are also the friendly voices on the phone when people call in to get information and make reservations. Both ladies are very knowledgeable on the workings of the park. They handle reservations for the rally lot, take care of storage rentals and manage tours for the realty staff.

You know “Singing Sammy” best for rocking TGO with his DJ style music, but Sammy’s not just another pretty face. Sammy Haddad received his MBA from Florida Institute of Technology. He worked at NASA for 34 years, retiring as the Industry Labor Relations Manager of Kennedy Space Center. He now owns Haddad Labor Management Consultants LLC, providing management and labor consulting solutions to a wide range of business practices. He also writes a column, “Funny Thing is...,” for Senior Life magazine. But most importantly, he provides music and fun as the Singing DJ. Stop by the Blue Heron every other Friday to get your dance on with your friends!

Free Beer! Sean and Margie Haire hosted an event for the Veterans group and had some beer left over which they shared with their neighbors the following day. Great Idea!

Meet Chloe, the first pet to be chosen for this new section known as Pet Corner. Chloe, a seven year old MaltiPoo, is a good girl who loves riding in the golf cart, barking at the delivery people and sometimes acting like a cat. Who’s Next? A dozen people showed up for the Clown Class, presented by Pamela Taylor, to learn how to make balloon objects and learn about the art of being a clown. A Clown Alley (club) will be organized for next season with plans to do volunteer work as clowns in the Titusville area. If you are interested in more information, contact Pam at 571-217-0444.
