The workday began for me at 7am with a morning tag-up and some words about the importance of safety on the job. I was placed on Tracy’s team, with Zach and Gage. Lawn crew trainer Anthony Walton was also assigned to me, to provide training on the 60” sit down mower before I got to work. Needless to say, my assigned team ran circles around me while I mowed, and I made two rookie mistakes along the way. First, I made a wide turn on the mower and accidentally knocked over some loose pavers in a front yard. Fortunately, the homeowner was very understanding and forgiving. Later I was mowing along a lake perimeter and got my mower stuck in the mud and was pulled out by a chain. I also operated a backpack blower and line trimmer, fortunately causing no damage. My favorite moment came when my assigned crew and I took a few minutes to towel off the sweat, catch our breath, chat about the equipment and look back at the nice lines of manicured lawns we left behind. Perhaps the best part of my Wednesday Workdays is treating the crews to lunch, and spending time listening and getting to know them over a meal. This day’s lunch was the famous 1/2 lb. Blue Heron Burger with fries. The main reason for my Wednesday Workday is to show my respect and appreciation for our CSA employees’ hard work and dedication to our homeowners. I know the lawn crew enjoyed watching me sweat and struggle with the equipment and get a taste of their hard work. We all enjoyed some laughs along the way, and at the end of the day my arms felt like jelly. If you want to help and support your lawn crew, here are six simple ways you can do so: 1) Trim up any low-hanging palms or bushes and put clippings by the road. 2) Pick up your dog waste. 3) Remove obstacles, pick up palm fronds or other tree debris and put it by the road. 4) Offer a kind wave or smile to them as they go about their work, they appreciate your kindness. 5) If you have concerns or problems with our lawn crew, contact me or your CSA office team, and give us an opportunity to use your feedback to teach and coach our crew, as many are just now learning the ropes. 6) If you have compliments, email them to me for the record and I will share with our team.

Be Well and God Bless, Billy Specht CSA Manager D Plantation Drive • Titusville, FL 32780 • 321-268-9767

One of our long-term CSA employees is beginning a battle with lung cancer now. Trash and Debris technician Jeff Miller will be receiving surgery next week, and following surgery he may begin a treatment plan in the following weeks. Jeff has been with CSA for over seven years and it’s time to show him our support during this difficult time. If you wish to send Jeff your well wishes, a gift or a card, we will collect them in the CSA office and make sure they reach Jeff quickly.

I found this team to be healthy, skilled, caring and fun. This is the best lawn crew we’ve employed in my six years as your manager. The team reflects the hard work of their supervisor, Mike O’Neal. Mike is a 20-year CSA employee who began his career on lawn crew and has served in many roles of CSA maintenance. Mike is an honest and humble leader who genuinely cares about his employees and TGO. His care is reflected in the quality of your lawns.

Dear TGO Community, This is the “Lawn Crew” edition of my Manager’s Corner. Today our TGO lawns look lush and healthy, thanks in big part to our hard-working lawn crew. I spent a “Wednesday Workday” recently with this crew (see pictures on page 32). They are a diverse team of eighteen men with varying backgrounds, ranging in age from 19 to 53 years old. Lawn crew is the most physically-taxing job within the CSA, and it requires extra endurance during our long summer season’s unbearable heat and humidity. The lawn crew is a proving-ground for hard-working employees. Many of our skilled, long-term CSA maintenance workers began their CSA careers on lawn crew.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses incorrect heart rhythm patterns that could potentially be life threatening. The device treats the condition with electrical shocks. AED use requires minimal training because an electronic voice prompts the user through each step. If you are helping a person who collapsed and you’re unsure if a heart attack is the reason, don’t hesitate to use the AED. Every minute counts. The device determines if the patient needs an electrical shock or not. Simply place the AED pads on the patient’s bare skin, one on the right upper chest and the other on their lower left side. No one else should be touching the patient because false readings could result. The AED will advise you, the device operator, what to do next.

The automated system offers two methods to provide access for a visitor. Call no more than 24 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. Send an email to: guest@tgocsa.org, no more than 48 hours prior to your visitor’s arrival. The phone number and email address you use must already be registered with the CSA Office for the access request to be accepted. From Monday through Saturday, contractors must leave TGO by 6:00 pm from October 1 to April 30 and by 7:00 pm from May 1 to September 30. Please call the CSA Office at 321-2689767 during the regular weekday office hours to request any exceptions to these contractor work restrictions.

TGO Ambassadors FMCA Chapter Rally Schedule

February 23-26, 2023 Ocala Equestrian Rally (Planning) Ocala, FL Contact Linda Utz at 407-257-0842

• Tie bags together if they are all light in weight.

Golf Carts in TGO - Please Slow Down - Make Those Stops

• Break down all boxes and put all packing material in a closed bag.

• Do not put trash out at night because by morning it will have been scattered by wild animals.

As you all know there are many golf carts here in TGO and they are always zipping around the neighborhood. Unfortunately, serious golf cart injuries are on the rise to the tune of approximately 13,000 per year requiring emergency room visits. Luckily, here in TGO, we haven’t had many serious mishaps and we hope this good record continues. Please don’t be a statistic; stop at stop signs, control your speed, and do not turn corners at high speeds.

Community Information & Notices

• Close all trash bags with twist ties or the integrated drawstrings that some trash bags have.

CSA Trash Pick Up Rules

Our Declaration of Covenants states that “No CSA land may be cleared of any vegetation without prior written permission from the Board of Directors or its designee. Unauthorized clearing of CSA property will result in a hearing, with possible fines and ordered replanting.” This only makes sense, as you would not cut vegetation on someone else’s property without permission first. In order to track this better, we will require anyone seeking permission to cut vegetation on CSA property to fill out an ARC permit. An approved permit must include the CSA manager’s signature, and a copy of the permit will be filed in your ARC file for documentation purposes.

CSA Yard Debris Pick-Up Rules

The CSA crew picks up household trash 364 days of the year (off for Christmas). You’ll see them in a big truck pulling one or more green hoppers behind it. The guy crouching on the hopper grabs your trash bag as they pass by. To make the collection process efficient, please follow these important rules:

Clearing Vegetation on CSA Property

A word I know, six letters it contains, remove one letter and 12 remains. What is it? Answer is somewhere in this issue.

• Also be aware that if you place your trash out on the street too early, the vultures think you have prepared them a sack lunch - and the result is not always pretty!

• Place trash within 1 foot of the road so that it’s within easy reach.

• Put trash out at the curb by 10:00 am - Pick-up time varies within the park.

• Do not mix household trash with organic yard debris or construction materials.

• Dispose of your pet’s waste inside the closed trash bag.

The CSA crew picks up organic yard debris at least once per week. Tree trimmings should be cut down to a maximum of 4 feet long, weigh less than 50 pounds, and be stacked uniformly at the curb. Loose material such as pine needles, leaves and small twigs must be collected in untied plastic bags or open containers. The CSA will not pick up sod, dirt, tree stumps, construction material (e.g., concrete, wood, drywall, metal), chemicals (e.g., paint, oil), major appliances, or tires. DO NOT bring these items to the CSA Maintenance Yard yourself. They may be dropped off, without charge, at the Brevard County Mockingbird Mulching Facility (321-264-5009) on South Street (SR405). Go past the Lowe’s SR405 entrance then turn LEFT at the first traffic signal. Most other waste items such as carpet, porcelain plumbing fixtures, etc. that are not mentioned above can be dropped off at the Brevard County Transfer Station (321-264-5048) that is also on South Street (SR405), but 0.5 mile past Lowe’s on the same side of the street. Please do not allow pets to urinate on trash or debris. The crew has to pick this up!

Feature articles focusing on TGO resident photographers - by Jim Brubaker

Today my story is about our neighbor, Bob Netherton, and about being on the edge of something big. I met Bob as the TGO leader for the Moonport Modelers Radio Controlled Airplane Club here in Titusville. But for this article, I talked with Bob because he taught photography in the Titusville schools. Bob is retired after working 32 years in our school system. I asked Bob what he did in addition to teaching photography. He told me he was Director of the Arts program and was Media Specialist for the Titusville middle school. He taught art, ceramics, jewelry making, poster making, program promotions - everything to do with art and photography. I wondered, “What did art and photography do for the student?” Bob’s response was, “What I did was fun for the kids - they loved to do it. I was teaching them how to have fun while learning. Photography and art were often an elective and they viewed it like a getaway from studies. But, I was teaching them to create, to commit to a project, and to be a team member. I made sure the yearbook and activity advertisements were student projects of learning about producing a publication, how to plan a project, how to promote a school activity, and report students’ accomplishments and how to take photos that told the story. I helped teachers use educational videos and photos. I used students to help produce the school’s communications broadcasts that were supported with photos and videos, like our network morning shows. I maintained the library - anything to do with media.”

Meet Bob Netherton

Just imagine, in Bob’s 32 years, how many Titusville graduates owe him a big THANKS. Their family life, their career, their being was so influenced by the learning and caring that Bob, as a leader of the elective media activities, gave when they were young students. At least one of them carried photography into his career, Gregory Daniel Photography, on Garden Street in Titusville. According to Professional Photographers of America, Gregory is one of the most internationally awarded photographers in the United States.

I wondered to Bob, “Does your skill in building and flying model airplanes have anything to do with your skill of photography?”

Bob went on, “My photography hobby is in hiberna tion now, but it really gives me peace of mind to know I can bring it out of hibernation when the time is right. Knowing that I have that backup relaxes me more than I can describe. Flying requires space for plane storage, an air field, and physical ability. Photography, on the other hand, like Sharon said in a previous issue of Snap-Shot, is a hobby that can serve us through all of our years with almost no space requirement and can even be done from the seat of our golf cart as we get older.”

Right now, I am into flying as a hobby, enjoying ex perimenting, studying what should be done, re-doing, focusing on details and being in control of the outcome. Flying and photography are the same that way. I enjoy the same things in both and would encourage others to consider these hobbies as two that go together. Flying club members enjoy photographing friend’s colorful planes and some even equip their planes with cameras to photograph from on high.”

He said, “Last year I came to that meeting hoping to find a group that was focused on what I call the new darkroom - I have had access to a darkroom since I was 10 years old. With the digital camera, the darkroom is replaced with post processing software like Photoshop. I would enjoy a group focused on the new techniques.

In the darkroom I learned how to define and create the image I wanted. It took a lot of tinkering and learning to know what you want to happen in the way of compo sition, texture, color, perspective, and the story told by the photo. You needed to know how to make the camera, printer, and the darkroom chemicals do that for you. I would like to join with a group of photographers that want to do what I did in the darkroom but with the soft ware, digital displays, and printers to create the image they want. Maybe even to learn the modern version of photo graphic silkscreen printing that I experimented with in the darkroom. The advances in software, video, drone photography, cell phone cameras, mirrorless cameras, and photo media is happening at lightening speed. If we had class es, maybe once a month, I am sure interest groups would emerge - offering opportunities for like minded hobbyists to socially gather while experimenting and learning all that the new digital technology has to offer. We see photographs everywhere in TGO - in the Hap penings, on the Nature Center facebook page, on the Photo Club facebook page, on TGO calendars, on CBS Sunday Morning Show - these photos were taken and post processed by TGO residents. If their skill was taught - maybe as often as once a month, I think my photo hobby might come out of hibernation. We could be on the edge of something big if interest groups emerged.”

“My photography hobby is in hibernation now, but it really gives me peace of mind to know I can bring it out of hibernation when the time is right. Send your tips and ideas about Snap-Shot to jimbrubaker@earthlink or text message to 321-693-0597

I met with Gregory and he told me, “Mr. Netherton, my art instructor in high school, had a major influence on my life. Mr. Netherton worked with me and allowed me to create my own unique class curriculum to mix photogra phy, oils, and acrylics. He taught me to be in control of the outcome. My elegant portraits would not be without the freedom and guidance I received from Mr Netherton.

After a brief pause, his response gave me a new insight: “I got into photography as a hobby at a very young age. I spent hours in the darkroom learning to enjoy ex perimenting, studying what should be done, re-doing, focusing on details and being in control of the outcome.

I wanted to tempt Bob - not to stop the flying but to maybe bring his photography out of hibernation now. “I saw you came to one Photo Club meeting, what would you like to see the club do?”

TGO FIREWISE INFORMATION

The Hurricane At TGO by Ed Brown This is a storm that you have been preparing for (RIGHT)? If your answer is “no,” “not yet,” or “what storm?” I am deeply concerned for you! We are in “Hurricane Season.” We have been for weeks! Perhaps you are a new resident and haven’t had time to research “Hurricane!” For you and the rest of us who may need a reminder, a hurricane is a storm called a TROPICAL CYCLONE that forms over warm ocean waters. It is a low pressure system that has a counter-clockwise circulation, thunder storms and maximum sustained winds of less than 39 mph. It is best referred to as a “TROPICAL STORM.” When the maximum sustained, swirling winds reach 74 mph, it is called a HURRICANE. Fueled by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, straight-line winds can reach over 160 mph! If a Hurricane strikes land, it pushes a wall of water ashore. This wall of water is called Storm Surge. It can combine with the storm’s rainfall to produce flooding.

Category 2: Winds 96-110 mph

There are five types, or categories of hurricanes, based on the storm’s wind speed: Category 1: Winds 74-95 mph

Donald Payne 407-222-0583

Category 3: Winds 111-129 mph Category 4: Winds 130-156 mph Category 5: Winds 157 mph or more What ingredients are needed for a hurricane to form? 1. Warm surface waters: 79F or more. 2. Winds that don’t change much (speed or direction) as altitude increases.

RESIDENTS REDUCING WILDFIRE RISKS

Sharon Maloney 770-294-6362

Now that we have HURRICANE defined, let us review your preparations for SURVIVAL: Option #1: Get out of Titusville and go where the hurricane is not going! Make a list (or lists) of what you and your family need to take, including pets and their food. Also, important papers and medical info. How do you determine the storm track? From the TV news, weather radio; crystal ball! Make sure fuel tanks are full! If you are filling spare fuel tanks, make sure they are grounded (on the ground) to avoid static electric sparks (be Firewise) and have a safe fuel transfer system (check Amazon for pumps. Have spare food (canned is quick and simple and edible cold.) Have a manual can opener and eating utensils. Out of the storm target area services should be good, but take water for drinking and cleaning (one gallon per day, per person). Plastic gallon jugs of water from Publix are good. Keep in contact with family and friends via cell phone. Keep it charged. Turn off home electricity when you lock up. On the road, expect delays. Be patient, courteous and safe. GOOD LUCK! Evacuation and Shelter-In-Place articles have appeared in THE HAPPENINGS earlier this year. Check back issues of FIREWISE in The Happenings and in the TGO Conference Room or On Line.

Alligator Robb

48

Howdy, Great Outdoorsians! My Name is Frank “Alligator Robb” and I have been offered the blessing to share some incredible information with you and maybe even tell a story or two if words permit.

Three years ago, I started a 501c3 non-profit, Environmental Education Awareness Research Support and Services (EEARSS), in which we study Alligators here in Brevard, in North Carolina and Crocodiles in Belize with the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC). Our Crocodilian research is accomplished along with NC State, University of Lousiville, University of Southern Indiana and a handful of others. We also provide Biodiversity studies on Brevard County Environmentally Endangered Lands.

First, I feel like it is important for me to tell you a little bit about myself so you can understand my qualifications to speak on the subject at hand. I have been working with crocodilians and reptiles in general since my freshman year in high school 27 years ago. This is something that has been a true calling from God for me and part of my daily life. I went back to school while working for Florida Fish and Wildlife and earned a Biomedical Degree so I could look at the human health related benefits of Alligators and other crocodilians. I am an appointed member of the Crocodile Specialist Group and sit on the Global Board of Human Crocodile Conflict for them. I have been part of studies exploring parasitology, endocrinology, toxicology, tracking, lipids, and on and on.

Meet

49 I come to you with a knowledge base that’s very different and sometimes quite enlightening to some. So, let’s jump right into it! The American Alligator is a crocodilian. Ok, but what is a crocodilian? Crocodilians are a group of semi-aquatic reptiles that include alligators, caiman, crocodiles and gharials. Total as to date of 26 species that are across the world. More than 80% of those are critically en dangered and are likely to be extinct if things don’t drastically change for them.

Although semi-aquatic alligators do not need to live in the water, we commonly find them residing in forest areas. Even sometimes in scrub habitat living with Gopher Tortoises… and, on a few occasions, in gopher burrows! Here in Brevard, we have the American Alligator. I am often asked, “Frank, how many alligators are in Brevard?” or “How many gators are on the Space Coast?” Being slightly sarcas tic, yet said with as much truth as possible … my reply is, “Somewhere between one and a million,” as there is honestly no way to know. Brevard is different than just about anywhere else alligators are found. This is due to all the open water we have throughout the county. The Indian and Banana Rivers provide excellent opportunities for our alliga tors to hunt/fish. Yes, that’s right, alligators are great at fishing and even love feeding upon sharks. Before I get off subject, alligators can spend time in and around our brackish/salt rivers if there is a fresh water outfall or pond nearby. Alligators, unlike their counterparts the crocodile, don’t have salt excretion glands to filter out the salt water. So, our alligators travel to rain outfalls, ponds, ditches, and canals like the Addison Canal to purge the salt from their systems. Alligators were thought by the “experts” to not travel more than a mile and a half radius for adult males and about a third of that for females. For a traditional non-coastal habitat of alligators that might be true. Through the research projects I have been part of in our county we have found alligators traveling up to and sometimes more than 40 miles. This blows away any previously documented findings, but again, Brevard and the Space Coast are different.

Alligator Robb Captures Chicago’s ‘Chance the Snapper’ Frank Robb is sort of a legend in Chicago. You see, Chicago had an alligator problem (yes, an alligator!) and Robb was called on to locate and capture him somewhere within the Humboldt Ponds and Lagoons. Not an easy task when you consider there are over 2.8 acres of water. Chicago didn’t have any alligator trappers in their Animal Control Division so Robb got the call. Within 48 hours, Robb had the gator in hand, all 5’ 3” of him - and Robb was now a hero. T-shirts were made and thousands of people took part in a Name the Gator contest. Every media outlet in town wanted an interview with Robb. He even threw out the first pitch at a Cubs game. As for Chance, he now lives the cozy life at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm.

There have been gators we have caught on NASA property that ended up in Windover Farms. Not to men tion finding them there and in The Great Outdoors with barnacles still on them. I find that fascinating myself. You might be thinking... ok, so they travel a long ways, Alligator Robb, but why in the world should I be interested in alligators? They are just big, silly, worth less animals! Well, let’s hope you are not saying any of those things, because you would be drastically wrong on all accounts. Continued...

Alligator Robb Meet

50 If I told you how many times I have heard the mention of an alligator’s brain size and say that they are just a dumb dinosaur… Well, that couldn’t be further from the truth. The alligator has the same cerebral cortex as a dolphin. Yes, you read that correctly. They can solve problems; they are thinkers and studiers of everything. Really, it is their intelligence that gets them in trouble so often. They learn quickly and if an easier way is provided to them, they take it. For instance, if you are in the backyard by your pond/ lake/canal/ditch and you are feeding the fish or the turtles or the ducks… any wildlife, they are watching this, they are always watching and taking notes. They never, ever forget. They see you feeding these animals and after one or two times of doing this, you have yourself a friendly neighborhood alligator. Fishing provides them the same opportunity at an easy meal. After a fisherman catches a fish, that fish is tired and is an easy catch for the alligator. Not to mention some fishermen leave things behind that the gator will clean up. This is not me saying don’t go fishing; I love fishing, just do it smartly and with the respect of knowing that if a gator shows up you are moving on. If you find yourself in the backyard feeding wildlife in the water... I am sorry, but you are part of the problem and the best thing you can do is stop. Nearly every bite I have ever worked involved a fed gator or someone in the process of feeding one. Why does an alligator lay back and watch and study? That is how you build yourself a game plan. He is watching it all and planning a move. Maybe every afternoon at 3 pm you come home, walk to the edge of the lake and feed the fish. He knows that and will plan his entire day around it. This means he is studying the birds, rabbits, squirrels, and sadly, sometimes your pets, and learning their behaviors. That doesn’t make him bad, it makes him opportunistic!

Capturing alligators is a dangerous business. Robb has an “A” team that he relies on to make sure it goes smoothly.

Speaking of their brain, they have a uni-hemispheric brain. This allows them to turn half their brain on and off as they please. Alligators also have full control over their heart rate and O2 saturation. They can decide to turn their heart rate down to 1 BPM and chill out on the bottom of the pond all day or to crank it up after a morning of laying in the sun (Thermoregulation) and go grab a snack.

Alligators are an apex predator. They are the top of the food chain in their environment. This means that the alligator can bioaccumulate all the information in an area. That’s a big word that might require some expla nation. Alligators eat everything; fish, turtles, birds, horseshoe crabs, you name it! Any toxins, heavy met als, chemicals are all magnified in them due to this. This Bioaccumulation makes them a floating file of in formation waiting to be sampled. So, what we do with EEARSS is to capture the ani mal and then take blood, tissue and urine. This allows us to analyze our environment via them. Where it gets even more interesting is that the American Alligator has an endocrine system and reproductive hormones that are 95% plus the same as ours. We, like them, are apex predators and the environmental factors affect ing them WILL and are affecting us. The alligator has one of the top immune systems in the world. Their blood kills every known virus and bacteria on contact. HIV, Covid, you name it, dead within seconds. They have a blood clotting factor that scientists still do not completely understand. Know ing that, you wouldn’t think they would get sick, but theyHeredo. locally, what makes the Space Coast so dif ferent is also one of their biggest challenges. Salt is hard on their systems, and that, along with toxins and other stressors, allows this incredible immune system to not work up to its full potential. More about this another time! I want to tell you a story to cap off just how incred ible alligators really are, in every way. I have caught alligators in literally every situation you can imagine and sometimes think I’ve seen it all in that regard. Then the Lord reminds me there is always something different. I have captured them in restrooms, in the VAB, hotel elevators, garages, fire stations, police stations, under rockets, under the space shuttles, on and around every rocket pad on KSC or the 45th space wing, under neighborhoods in culverts (quite often), under downtown Titusville... you get my point.

A couple years ago I went on a call about a man who had been bitten by an alligator. This man was a dock worker and was in Sykes Creek, chest deep, jetting in a seawall. They had been working all day when one of the workers saw bubbles and pointed it out to the guy in the water. Now, keep in mind, bubbles are not always associated with an alligator. Ninety-nine percent of the time they have nothing to do with one another. But, this was one of those one percent times. A few seconds lat er he felt something brush him and then he felt a huge pressure on his leg. This was a very large, very tough guy and when he got out of the water, he had huge holes in his leg where a very big gator had grabbed him. Let’s make one thing clear, alligators have zero desire to hurt a person, it’s not the way they are built.

Why waste that precious energy on something that’s too big to even consider. Just not how they work.

The Benefits of Alligators

Frank and EEARSS has an event coming up, the ECOFEST at Sand Point Park in Titusville on November 19 from 9 am to 4 pm. Mark your calendars.

52 I didn’t hear about this until a few hours later when law enforcement called, and we went to the scene. Nobody had ever seen a gator, there were just bubbles and then the guy’s leg. So, I started my search for what we knew had to be quite a large animal. I noticed the canal had tons of catfish in it. In speaking to the neighbors, they told me many people on the canal scrape the leftovers from lunch or dinner off their plates over the seawall. Interesting, I thought, this explained the exuberant catfish that were in high number everywhere.

This is exactly what had happened in this circumstance, this blind alligator, bumping along the seawall, struggling to survive, made a mistake, realized it and moved along. I tell you this story to remind you that the situation isn’t always binary, bad animal, good animal. They are typically what we make them. The less interaction you can have with them, the better in all instances. Give them their space, enjoy them, they have so many benefits and are such an incredible keystone species which may eventually be the cure to cancer, HIV and many other things that ail us. Robb Meet

I searched all evening and never saw a single thing. Sometimes at night you will be able to get a glimpse of a gator via eye shine. The next day I was back there looking again and came across a very large gator. When I approached him, he didn’t sink or swim away and I walked within feet of him. Something looked off and then I saw it. Both of his eyes had been shot out. As I watched him for a few minutes he swam and bumped the seawall under my feet, ducked and rubbed his nose along the side until he would brush a crab, or a fish and he would grab it and eat it. Alligators have something we call ISO’s, which are sensory organs around their mouths. It is underwater sonar that allows them to detect movement or destressed animals. They also have an inherent ability to be gentle and to tell when they grab something that isn’t what they had intended.

Artemis I will be the first integrated flight test of NASA’s deep space exploration system: the Orion spacecraft (the NASA spacecraft that will carry astronauts from Earth to lunar orbit and back), Space Launch System (SLS) rock et (the only rocket that can send Orion, astronauts, and cargo to the Moon on a single mission - the most powerful rocket in the world), and the ground systems at Ken nedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The first in a series of increasingly complex missions, Artemis I will be an uncrewed flight that will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration, and demonstrate our commitment and capability to extend human existence to the Moon and beyond. During this flight, the uncrewed Orion spacecraft will launch on the most powerful rocket in the world and travel thousands of miles beyond the Moon, farther than any spacecraft built for humans has ever flown, over the course of about a three-week mission.

The Human Landing System is the final mode of transportation that will take astronauts to the lunar surface from the Gateway in the Artemis lunar exploration program. On early missions, the astronauts will live in side the pressurized crew cabin portion of the lander for up to a week. The plan is for long term housing on the moon, the Artemis Base Camp.

NASA plans to build a Gateway in lunar orbit which will be a small, human-tended space station orbiting the Moon that will provide extensive capabilities to support NASA’s Artemis campaign. This will be where astronauts will transfer between Orion and the lander on regular Ar temis missions. Built with international and commercial partnerships, Gateway’s capabilities for supporting sustained exploration and research in deep space include docking ports for a variety of visiting spacecraft, space for crew to live and work, and on-board science investigations to study heliophysics, human health, and life sciences, among other areas. Gateway will be a critical platform for developing technology and capabilities to support Moon and Mars exploration in the coming years.

62 Tip of the A The tip of the A of Artemis points be yond the Moon and signifies that our efforts at the Moon are not the conclu sion, but rather the preparation for all that lies beyond. Blue Earth Crescent The crescent shows missions from our audience’s perspective. From Earth we go. Back to Earth all that we learn and develop will return. This crescent also visualizes Artemis’ bow as the source from which all en ergy and effort is sent.

Red Trajectory The trajectory moves from left to right through the crossbar of the “A” oppo site that of Apollo. Thus highlighting the distinct differences in our return to the moon. The trajectory is red to symbolize our path to Mars. A The A symbolizes an arrowhead from Artemis’ quiver and represents launch.

Gateway will remain in orbit for more than a decade, pro viding a place to live and work, and supporting long-term science and human exploration on and around the Moon.

Understanding The Artemis Logo

NASA is going back to the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and inspiration for a new generation of explorers: the Artemis Generation. While maintaining American leadership in exploration, they will build a global alliance and explore deep space for the benefit of all. With Artemis missions, NASA will be using innova tive technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before. They will collaborate with commercial and international partners and establish the first longterm presence on the Moon. This will be the Artemis Base Camp, a place for astronauts to live and work on the moon. The Artemis Base Camp concept includes a modern lunar cabin, a rover, and a mobile home. They will use what they learn on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap: sending the first astronauts to Mars.

Moon The Moon is our next destination and a stepping stone for Mars. It is the focus of all Artemis efforts.

63 Standing atop the mobile launcher, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket is photographed at Launch Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on March 18, 2022. The rocket, with the Orion capsule atop, was carried from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the pad - a 4.2-mile journey that took nearly 11 hours to complete– by the crawler-transporter 2 for a wet dress rehearsal ahead of the uncrewed Artemis I launch. Artemis I will test SLS and Orion as an inte grated system prior to crewed flights to the Moon. Through Artemis, NASA is paving the way for a long-term lunar presence and serving as a stepping stone on the way to Mars. In case of a launch date delay, backup dates are scheduled for September 2 and September 5 Huge crowds are expected to visit the Space Coast for this inaugural launch! See more about Artemis 1 and its planned trajectory in the back pages of this issue.

I am working part time at a new speakeasy called The Cellar, located in Niceville. I absolutely love it and I’m learning so much from the mixologist. I still have more interviews lined up and I’m hoping to get another part time job right on the beach in Destin. So, how long do you plan to stay there before you hit the road for another adventure? My goal is to stay here for two years. If I didn’t love the campground so much I would probably take off sooner than that. To be honest with you, I don’t even know where I want to go! Do you plan to get some parrots like Frank and Suzy? I think I will stick with my two lizards and my cat! If I had more space I would probably get more animals, though!

I’ve never thought about that, but I would love for some familiar faces to come visit! Come check out the beautiful campground and let me make you some of these fancy cocktails I am learning!

Will you keep us informed of your future adventures? Of course! I miss everybody and would love to share my journey. See some photos of Dee’s adventure in the back pages of this issue.

I live in Defuniak Springs, Florida in a Campground called Sunset King Lake RV Resort. I absolutely fell in love with this place. My favorite part about it is that the pool and hot tub overlook a big lake. When I walk up to the lake in the evening time I can’t even count the amount of turtles that swim up to me. I feel like it is in the middle of nowhere, but Walmart is only 15 minutes away. To get there it is nothing but back roads and hills. I will share some photos of downtown, but there is not much to see! Tell us a little about your new job? How long do you plan to stay there? I have had so many job offers, trying to find one that will make me as happy as everything else going on right now.

It was a relief to know she wasn’t abducted by aliens! “I’ve never really been the spontaneous one. My anxiety has held me back from a lot of things in life. When I decided to buy a camper, I thought how great it would be to travel. I never thought I would actually get up and leave my comfort zone. To go on vacation, and then to decide I didn’t want to go back home is one of the craziest things I’ve ever done. (Well, maybe not the craziest.) But I have to tell you, this whole week has been amazing. Being so close to my best friend, and being able to follow my dreams of exploring is something I should have done years ago. Life is too short to be anything but happy.”

Have you thought about starting a Go Fund Me account so all your Blue Heron friends can help out?

It was a mystery... one day she’s serving customers at the Blue Heron on Country Music Night, and the next day she’s gone! The TGO locals were concerned and needed to know what happened to Deanne Fricano.

Well... inquiring minds needed to know more about Dee’s sudden decision to make this life-changing choice, so we sent our ace investigators to track her down for this exclusive interview.

So Dee, we saw from your Facebook post that you’ve had this desire to take off and explore, but really, when did you make up your mind to leave? About three days into my vacation! I had been telling people for months that I was going to leave, no one believed me including myself. It was always scary to think about relocating to a place where I didn’t know anybody. So where are you now and what are you doing?

It wasn’t long before Dee put a post on Facebook explaining her absence.

Etiquette and Image Summer Camp

On August 2, 3, and 4 an Etiquette and Image Summer Camp was held at the Blue Heron for 8th through 11th grade students wishing to improve their social skills. The camp was put on by Robbie Renee Milbert. She is an etiquette expert trained and certified by the mecca of manners, the Emily Post Institute. She opened Robbie Renee & Co. etiquette school in 2014 and coaches East Central Florida adults and children in all manner of considerate comportment. The students were instructed in every day manners, proper greetings, casual and formal introductions, correspondence, technology etiquette, sports etiquette, manners at home and other venues, and being a proper host and guest. Tea Etiquette was discussed during a mid-day tea, and dining etiquette was worked on during a multi-course meal. Image training included personal appearance, grooming, proper attire for every occasion, and appropriate posture. The end of the course was a lesson on how to dance the Fox Trot.

When I visit a new town, I always check out the haunted places nearby. Here are a couple of them. Far Left: This hotdog stand is supposed to have the best hotdogs in the world. It is also the second oldest in the country. Staff working late claim to hear singing, and the back door opening and closing on its own Left: This bed-and-breakfast hotel was built in the 1920’s. Staff and guests have reported ghosts of young children and a lamp that moves around on its own in Room #008.

We found out a couple things about Dee after she left TGO

72 I have explored all over the panhandle, southern Alabama, and even went to Georgia one afternoon. I have been to so many amazing places it is hard to wrap up in just a few pictures. Keep an eye out on my Facebook because I will start to post photos and videos of my adventures. My new home is Defuniak Springs, Florida. The sign coming into town says “Home of Florida’s Historic Chautauqua.” If any of you know me well, I went straight towards one of the abandoned buildings that is part of the Chautauqua.

73

Above: This is the old Covington County Jail in Andalusia, Alabama. I am waiting to hear back about getting inside for a tour. David from abandonedflorida.com and I are hoping to explore it together!

I thought it was pretty cool going to the highest point in Florida! The mansion from Sweet Home Alabama.

She’s a great photographer and enjoys haunted places

Left: However, I did get inside the old Coffee County Jail in Elba, Alabama. It was built in 1912 and used until a flood in 1990. On March 1, 1979, Coffee County Sheriff C.F. “Neil” Grantham was murdered in front of the jail.

74

Above: I love finding buildings where you can see the old signs on the brick.

Below: Reeves Peanut Company was founded in 1932. Fun fact (well, don’t quote me on this, you can’t trust what you read online these days). The peanuts are known for being used in Lance peanut butter crackers. The building appears to be built back in 1903, maybe it was a cotton factory back then.

Below : This is the old general store, part of it is still open these days. It is rumored to be haunted by a past owner. People have heard footsteps and witnessed items falling off shelves.

Above: The Bluff City Inn is an iconic 19th century hotel in Eufaula, Alabama. It is said that the town is restoring the hotel. Everything was fenced off, so it was hard to see if much progress is being made. It is a giant building and I would love to go back and see what they do with it
