Tatura Run A chilly Saturday morning had us all gathering at the Bunker Hill servo by 10:30am ready for the short cruise to Nagambie for lunch then onto Shepparton to meet up with Jeff Wilson and others at the newly constructed Car Museum. The majority of the group went inside the museum for a look while a couple of the ladies took the option of going straight to the warmth of a nearby café. Inside the museum the selection of vehicles was impressive, ranging from vintage to classic cars, motorbikes, pushbikes and a great display of old clinker speedboats. The majority of items on show are owned by the general public. Once having put the details of the owners’ vehicle on a register, the museum coordinators then have a large range of items available to call on for displays. This enables them to run a “theme”, be it anniversary, model of interest etc. - a great idea ensuring a constantly evolving display. From there it was a short drive to Tatura for a quick check in at our accommodation where we met up with the Kendalls. A few ales at the motel, then we were off the Drew’s for a fantastic dinner, more drinks and the huge bonfire. Even though it was a cold night, the fires and food kept most people warm and for others the booze kept them pickled. There was a great turnout and as per previous years the bonfire as always was a crowd pleaser. One amusing point for the evening was the appearance an old jalopy driven by Graeme Drew with Rowie perched high on the rear tray atop a rickety old wooden chair a la the Jed Clampett mobile. The racoon hat was a nice touch too! The Drews sure do know how to put on a good show. Sunday morning had us waking up early for the planned breakfast at the Goulburn Valley GM club rooms. A while later everyone else turned up after a nice sleep in, *note if you decide to change the start time remember to tell everyone... A good feed of egg and bacon sangas topped off with a hot coffee was perfect to start the day. We then pointed the Nomad east and with Glenn and Jules in tow we headed across to Jeff’s place for lunch. The rest of the group made their way there via the Mooroopna Market, topping up on some hand-crafted goodies. While at Jeff’s we had the chance to look at his growing collection of cars, which now includes a very original FE Holden. Luckily he still has plenty of room behind the shed to keep extending it as his car collection grows. Eventually the rest of the group arrived and the bbq was fired up for a superb lunch. Kaylene had been busy cooking up a great range of deserts, treating us all to a bunch of goodies to top of the great lunch. All too soon the time had come to hit the road for the cruise back home. Thanks again to the Wilsons and the Drews for putting on such a great weekend, and thank you also to the GVGM Club for putting on the breakfast at their Club Rooms. A note worth mentioning, the GVGM club are changing their name to the GV Fins and Fenders and are holding a Show n Shine in Tatura on the weekend of the 19th - 20th October . Stay tuned for more details. The Hot Ones

History with a Mystery
The Chevrolet bowtie—introduced by company cofounder William C. Durant in late 1913—is one of the most recognized emblems in the world today. But how it came to be synonymous with the brand is open to wide interpretation. Durant’s version of how the logo came into existence is well-known. The longaccepted story, confirmed by Durant himself, was that it was inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel. According to The Chevrolet Story of 1961, an official company publication issued in celebration of Chevrolet’s 50th anniversary: “It originated in Durant’s imagination when, as a world traveller in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends, with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car.” However, conflicting accounts have emerged, each of which is plausible enough to deepen the mystery and suggest it may never be solved. Two of the alternate origins come from within the Durant family itself. In 1929, Durant’s daughter, Margery, published a book entitled, My Father. In it, she described how Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table: “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day.” The Hot Ones

The origins of the Bow Tie More than half a century later, another bowtie origin story was recounted in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine, based on a 13-year-old interview with Durant’s widow, Catherine. She recalled how she and her husband were on holiday in Hot Springs, Virginia, in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, at the time, Mrs. Durant didn’t clarify what the motif was or how it was used. That nugget of information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a November 12, 1911, edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, the Southern Compressed Coal Company placed an ad for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon. Did Durant and his wife see the same ad or one that was similar–the following year a few states to the north? The newspaper edition was dated just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Company. One other explanation attributes the design to a stylized version of the cross of the Swiss flag. Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, to French parents on Christmas Day 1878. Whichever origin is true, within a few years, the bowtie would emerge as the definitive Chevrolet logo. An October 2, 1913, edition of The Washington Post seems to be the earliest-known example of the symbol being used to advertise the brand. “Look for this nameplate” the ad proclaims above the emblem. Customers the world over have been doing so ever since. Many variations in colouring and detail of the Chevrolet bowtie have come and gone over the decades since its introduction in late 1913, but the essential shape has never changed. In 2004, Chevrolet began to phase in the gold bowtie that today serves as the brand identity for all of its cars and trucks marketed globally.
