President’s Report I would like to start off by saying congratulations to all club members and entrants of this year’s Chev Convention for making it such an enjoyable and fun filled weekend. Without your participation it would not have been so successful. As part of the Convention committee, and your President, I was very proud of the way members, entrants, and family members not only behaved but also got into having fun for the entire weekend. This is what our great club is all about. With so many challengers leading up to the event it was great to see it all unfold. The weekend started off great (except for a really cool wagon on the Westgate!) with a nice quite cruise up to Ballarat in near perfect weather. Most of us got there early to arrive at a great holiday park to set up registration so we weren’t flat out trying to do it after our cruise to Fast Lane Speed shop. With a small mishap of rooms for registration it went well then we were off to Daniel and Ebony Casser’s shop for a great tour. Daniel not only cleaned up all night and most of the day Friday but he also shut the shop for the day to allow us to be welcomed into his shop of absolute skill and mindblowing workmanship in which I thank you greatly Daniel. Next on the agenda was back to the registration at the Welcome Stranger Holiday Park. In the years I’ve been at the club, I’ve never seen the social side of rego so big and spread out as it was on Friday night. It was a great gathering of members and entrants which went on late in the night for all to enjoy. Can I thank Allan and Bill for the bbq’s , and Mick Bugeja for helping at registration, and the over kind staff of the Welcome Stranger Holiday Park for their experienced hospitality. The next day was the drags. The day went extremely well with many cars and purpose built drag cars of all sorts. It was a great crowd pleaser event with many thanks go-

It was great to see many entrants going down the ¼ for the first time and the rain held off until the last two finals (in which a white and green 57 was lined up and ready to go but had to be called back, bad luck Stevo!).
Now for the down fall. Due to many seats not filled on the night of the dinner as anticipated, Bad weather on Sunday in Melbourne (there were many groups of cars organising a day trip up on Sunday) and bad gate takings, also weather related, our Next was the dinner and band night overall finances suffered and we did not make the money we had hoped at the Trotting Track. Member’s Report - Mick Bugeja so I was a little unsure of what was to come. I was off to a good start with a burn out. Then once I worked out how to stage the car, I took off at the green light with a slow reaction time (but hey it was my first go!). I manually changed the gears not knowing where the finish line was. After I completed the first run I was hooked. After a quick feed, John and I went back for The weekend began for me meeting a seconds. I improved on my first race few other members at the Rockbank with a better burn out and reaction service station on the Western Freetime, beating John again. After setting way, from there we cruised on towards my qualifying time, my next race was Ballarat. With an easy check in at the against Charlie in his 65 Chev. I won Welcome Stranger Holiday Park as Charlie ran faster than his nomi(including an upgrade!) I was well on nated time, so I was into the next the way! After settling in, we cruised round. I narrowly missed out against down to Fast Lane Speed Shop for a Steve Peterson and my day was over. tour. The owner had a Once back at the Holiday Park the 1955 Chev drag car in the shop, but I weekend was in full swing. Sarah and was disappointed that it didn’t make it Mitchell then arrived and settled in down to the track the following day as I quickly before we all got ready for the Dinner Dance. It was well thought of would have loved to see it in action! to organise a courtesy bus for us so Once the tour was finished we all that those who wanted a drink didn’t cruised back to the Holiday Park via Ballarat’s main drag. I have to say that need to worry about how they would get back to the Holiday Park. When we turned a few heads. we arrived the evening was already I offered to help out with the Registrawell underway. The drinks were flowtion for the weekend, it was busy and ing and we able to catch up with other we sold lots of merchandise and raffle members before our meals were tickets that night. This was then folserved. Sarah and I were very imlowed by the sausage sizzle and a few pressed with the standard of the food quiet (!) beers. and service at the Ballarat and District Saturday morning started with more Trotting Track. After not winning the registrations for those who couldn’t raffle we relaxed (we’d managed to get make it the night before and selling Mitchell to sleep in his pram) and enmore raffle tickets. I then cruised with joyed the entertainment. We then took other members to Ballarat Drag Racadvantage of the courtesy bus once ing club which was located at the airagain and arrived back safely (thanks port. I was so excited at this point to Bill). give my car a run. With scrutineering It was an early start (too early for those completed, John and I got ready to run who’d enjoyed last night’s festivities our cars against each other. I must too much!) and we were back off to the admit, I have never drag raced before, Ever since I bought my 57 Chev in 2008 to restore I have been itching to get it to the convention. This year was the year! I’d been to the Saturday drags previously, but this would be the first year that I would be there for the whole weekend with my finished car, and the first year that Sarah and Mitchell would attend.

Trotting Track for our breakfast. We had been expecting a bacon roll, but to our surprise, breakfast was a big buffet that we took full advantage of. With the Chev parked we offered our help to Rowie and Phoebe by manning the merchandise stall. Nearly everyone who approached us enquired about the Hoodie’s. With the unexpected cold weather these had been a big hit Friday night and so none were left. I hadn’t even managed to get one for Sarah! After a while we were relieved and had a wander around to look at what cars had entered. There were a lot of quality cars on show, but unfortunately it seemed as if the weather had turned people off as number appeared down on previous conventions. Sarah quite liked the 56 Maroon/Silver hardtop. Luckily the rain held off so the band was able to set up outside near to the display area. Again we were unlucky with the raffle (thanks Don Neal!) and we were onto the awards. I was surprised to come away with the President’s Choice award but extremely happy about it. Once the awards were over we helped to pack up the stall and made our way back to the Holiday Park. For those who stayed the Sunday night we entertained ourselves by watching the Australian Grand Prix on the big screen followed by a BBQ and a couple of celebration beers. And so that completed my first Convention weekend. Sarah had more fun than she thought she would and was impressed at how family friendly the weekend was, so she is looking forward to the next convention. Overall, I had good fun at the drags and a great time seeing car club members and catching up with everyone.

Member’s Report - David Desira The 10th Chevrolet Convention has come and gone, if you weren’t part of it you missed a great event, with the new location and modified format working a treat.

for kindly offering not only to bus many of the people between the caravan park and the dinner but also for driving the women around during the day while the boys were out at the drags having a play. The committee guys were up early to set things up for the Sunday Show n Shine. Entrants started rolling in from around 8:00 and were treated to a kings breakfast in the function room directly above the show arena. Arranging parking in the new venue went smoothly with great support from the local Mens’ Shed team and a handful of dedicated members including Michael Kendall, Peter Liston and Don Neal. The Weather Gods were playing with us, giving us the coldest day in two months. With a max temp of only around 15C and rain in Melbourne, the numbers of anticipated day entries and spectators were lower than hoped for but the atmosphere nonetheless was fantastic. The layout of cars, with the Kids jumping castle and trade stands all in close proximity worked really well. The oval show arena with some of the top show cars on display looked an absolute treat and generated many compliments from entrants and spectators alike. The merchandise stand was set up in a prominent possie (albeit in a wind tunnel!) and did a steady trade throughout the day. Thanks to Mike & Sarah and Bob & Juli who manned the stand for a good portion of the day along with a few other members who held the fort from time to time. Car awards and the raffle were announced around 2:00. The raffle had a last minute rush on the tickets with our own Don Neal taking out the first prize of the huge tool kit. (I know where I’m going next time I need to service my car!)
