Celebrations in English speaking countries


NEW YEAR l  l

All countries around the world. In some countries, people have traditions like eating or burn objects while the bells ring at twelve o'clock. In the English speaking countries, people just hear the bells ringing and then they see or shoot fireworks.


VALENTINE´S DAY l

Many countries around the world (USA, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom...) Couples celebrate their love giving presents each other.


ST PATRICK'S DAY l

Ireland and Northern Ireland. Irish areas in the USA and Canada. It commemorates the death of Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. People dance in the streets and dress up with green clothes and clovers.


EASTER l

All Christian countries.

It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. l

Family give Easter eggs to children.


APRIL FOOL'S DAY l

It isn't a national holiday, but it's recognized in the UK, Australia, USA...

People play jokes and tell lies.

Usually, there are the children who play jokes.


MEMORIAL DAY l  l

It's a national holiday in the USA. It's made for remember the soldiers or civilians killed in the war. People go to parades and cemeteries.


4th JULY l  l

National holiday in the USA. Celebrates the independence from the United Kingdom.

People hang flags and shoot fireworks at night.

It's a very patriotic holiday.


LABOR DAY l  l

Celebrated in the USA and Canada. The equivalent holiday in other countries, like Spain, is celebrated on 1st May. It's a day of rest at home or to do free time activities.


COLUMBUS DAY l

Celebrated in the United States, many countries of Latin America and Spain. It relives the arrival of Cristobal Colón to the American shore.


HALLOWEEN l

Started in English speaking countries. Nowadays, celebrated in many places. People (normally kids) dress up with scary costumes and go trick-or-treating.


GUY FAWKES NIGHT l  l

Celebrated in Great Britain and in the US. It's inspired in 1605, when a group of English Catholics tried to kill James I of England with explosives. Nowadays, people make bonfires or fireworks with the body of Guy Fawkes inside.


THANKSGIVING DAY l

Celebrated principally in the United States and Canada. It started being a date when people said thanks to God for the good harvests. Nowadays, people have dinner with the family and they eat the typical turkey.


CHRISTMAS l

Celebrated all over the world.

It relives the birth of Jesus Christ.

Nowadays, everybody meets their family and they sing and are together. Santa Claus comes at 25th December night and brings gifts to children.
