Today, 150 years after we first set up home in Pall Mall, with 15 decades of finding property and looking after people under our belt, our clients now consider us to be their, ‘home experts’.

Yours sincerely,

Gerrards Cross

Hamptons offers you a warm welcome to Gerrards Cross

Congratulations, if you are house hunting in Gerrards Cross, you have already won. A home in this great area with all it offers, automatically makes you the envy of many. Now in order to make your transition as smooth and hassle free as possible Hamptons have put together this great guide which will help you choose the best schools, learn a little about planning and building control, read tips on where to shop, eat and lot’s more, all packed into one little guide with clickable links.

Perhaps most importantly we have researched some of the leading local professionals and experts who can help you add value and personalise your soon to be new home. A big WELCOME and enjoy.

A little bit of history

Gerrards Cross grew significantly following the opening of its train station in 1906 giving wealthy Londoners easy access to the benefits of country living.

Famous former residents include entertainer Roy Castle, human rights activist Amal Clooney and Conservative politician, Dominic Raab. Musicians Lulu and Maurice Gibb of Bee Gees fame married in St James Church in 1969.

The assortment of properties in Gerrards Cross has something to appeal to all tastes and budgets, from contemporary new-build property and luxury apartments to and detached Edwardian properties. Notable local buildings include the Grade II listed Gerrards Cross Memorial Building, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens best known for Cenotaph in London, the unique Victorian parish church of St James and Bulstrode Park country house to the southwest of town which was originally built for notorious 17th century judge, George Jeffreys.

Why move to Gerrards Cross?

It is considered one of the most exclusive areas in the country outside of the capital, with many celebrity residents. Despite its modest size, a major national surveying company named it the most sought-after commuter town or village in their London Hot 100 report in 2014, so if central London living doesn’t appeal to you, Gerrards Cross can effortlessly bridge the gap between city and rural living.

The town has a smattering of independent retailers alongside high street mainstays like WHSmith and Boots. It also has a post office, a community library, Everyman cinema, several doctor and dentist surgeries, and major supermarkets including a large Tesco, Waitrose and M&S. There is a leisure centre with a swimming pool and gym available a few miles north in Chalfont St Peter.

Gerrards Cross is surrounded by a vast expanse of rolling countryside and occupies a stunning position on the edge of the Chiltern Hills Area of Natural Beauty, with its array of walking and cycling trails. The town itself has ample green space in the town itself, families can take a stroll through the East Common to the children’s playground or West Common to the local duck pond.

RExcellent

nearby schools and close proximity to the Big Smoke make this smart town a hit with celebs and commuters looking for a cosmopolitan lifestyle with the benefit of countryside surrounds. Part of our Top 200 Places to Live series.

Dubbed ‘mini Hollywood’ due to the influx of celeb residents over the years (Amal Clooney grew up here after her family fled the civil war in Lebanon plus ‘our Cilla’, Fern Britton and a handful of première league footballers), ‘GX’ as it’s known locally encompasses the benefits of countryside living – foodie gastropubs, acres of local parkland and rural surrounds – whilst maintaining a buzzy town feel and easy access to London.

In central Gerrards Cross there’s smart gastropub The Apple Tree, or slightly off the beaten track is The Three Oaks, a handsome pub with a more restaurant-y feel that’s held a Bib Gourmand (excellent food at excellent value) since 2014. Family-run Di Paolo on the main high street offers a modern Italian with refined flavours and presentation, or if you’re after casual daytime dining head to buzzy Fego (lots of healthy and veggie options here) or cool indie café Huddle for specialty coffee and artisan food, freshly prepared daily in the kitchen.

GX isn’t best in show when it comes to shopping (head 12 minutes down the road to Beaconsfield for more choice), although you will find womenswear boutique Heidi & Hudson and Winser London alongside a Waitrose and sweet indie Gerrards Cross Bookshop. There’s a good yoga studio, Yoga Hook, offering classes as well as a floatation tank for major zoning out, and one of the few dedicated Guinot salons in the UK. For designer gear, hop in the car for 45 minutes to luxury outdoor designer outlet Bicester Village with 160+ boutiques and restaurants.

A fresh look at interior design from Kiwi Burst’s Claire Holdom.

For someone who is considering a appointing an interior designer for the first time what would you say to convince them to get in touch?

Employing an interior designer will provide invaluable and detailed knowledge of ergonomics, spatial planning and creative ideas to make people fall in love their homes. They help you get the most from your budget & avoid making costly mistakes. An interior designer comes with a fresh perspective & different ideas that create an interior that is a reflection of those that live within it.

Who takes the lead creatively when you have that first meeting?

The interior design of any space is a journey that we & our clients embark upon together. It is very much a joint effort to ensure the client gets exactly what they want from the design process. The initial meeting is to gain an understanding of what the client is trying to achieve from the space, what the area will be used for, if they have any particular styles they like or dislike, whether any existing items of furniture or accessories need to be incorporated & probe into their ultimate desires. As your interior designer, we take the lead with lots of questions to then start the process of developing an interior that fits the client’s lifestyle, needs & personality within their budget & timeframe.

What are the main steps from initial consultation to completion?

At the outset is programming & research. This is where the project is defined in general terms, identifying the client/s, the nature of the project, the purpose of the space & extent of the design work required. Research is carried out which involves interviews with the client to identify each of the users, their objectives, budget, timescales, style & colour preferences, from which a detailed brief is provided & approved by the client.

The exciting stage of conceptual design development follows, involving brainstorming design solutions, mood boards, space plans, colour schemes & any details of the proposed design. The concept designs are then presented to the client for review & feedback from which the final design development & documentation are produced. This will include the working drawings (floor plans, elevations, detail drawings), specifications, schedules & timeframes, which once approved, are used for the final construction phase. Contractors bids are sought & a schedule of works, materials, furnishings & accessories are ordered. Once the construction is completed any snagging will be resolved before the final installation of furnishings & accessories.

Do you have a particular style that you’re known for or can you adapt to anything?

A lot of my work is contemporary, but the style of any space needs to reflect the clients personality, so this is key for every project undertaken. At the end of the day, it’s the clients home, so the style needs to encapsulate their dreams & turn them in to reality.

What would be your dream commission?

I like older style properties with features such as tall ceilings, fireplaces & large hallways to create an initial wow that can be given a contemporary twist whilst being in keeping with the original architectural features.

Building Character, Shaping Futures

• Enthusiastic, sharing their enjoyment of their learning

• Curious, engaging in their learning, asking questions and seeking out knowledge

• Ambitious to achieve their personal best academically and to learn new skills outside of their academic lessons

• Resilient, ready to have another go if something does not work the first time, and recognise that success is a journey and not just a final product

• Excellence - striving to be the best they can be, acting with honesty and integrity in everything they do.

St Mary’s School, in Gerrards Cross, consistently achieves individual student success through a finely balanced approach that develops the whole student during her time with us Character education is a deliberate and purposeful part of our holistic education In teaching children the values, beliefs and behaviours that they need to be responsible, successful members of our school community, we are developing in our students the skills and mindset they need to strive for excellence and become role models who will take their place in the world and achieve their goals in whatever field their passions and interests lie. As we encourage our students to develop themselves holistically, we are also supporting their well-being and positive mental health We know how important it is that we ensure all our students are equipped for a modern and changing world, where new technologies and major demographic and environmental changes are predicted to transform education and employment over the coming decades Using the acronym TAKE CARE, we identify a range of character strengths as important for students to develop St Mary’s students are :

• Team players, who enjoy leading and engaging with peers as mentors, as collaborators in lessons, in sports teams and in musical ensembles.

• Adventurous, embracing new challenges and opportunities, for example, trying one of the sixty clubs we offer each week throughout the school.

• Kind and empathetic, acting as positive role models by supporting each other and showing respect for everyone in our diverse community.

Character education is integrated into our academic curriculum; students are challenged not just to be active in their learning, but to take the lead, to be curious, and to be academically ambitious under the guidance and supervision of their teachers Fostering habits that lead to such an active approach requires teachers to know each student they teach and what will support and challenge them in their learning pathways. Every student is an individual By encouraging students to learn from their mistakes, we help them to develop a growth mindset, and to celebrate the pathway to success as well as the end result itself We

Local Schools

Where our children spend most of their week and how they are being educated is a decision which should take some serious consideration. We have put together this list of suggestions to make your life a little bit easier. Many local schools and nurseries offer free tours so please go and visit your choice options before making that final important decision.

Beaconsfield High School

Our school seeks to provide an engaging, challenging, and inspiring education in an environment where every individual is valued, nurtured, and celebrated. With a firm foundation of Christian values, we share a vision of excellence. Our vision is to see ‘Every Child Flourishing’; this is inspired by Jesus’ words in John’s gospel where he says, ‘I have come that they might have life and life it to the full.’ We seek to equip our children with a love of learning and the associated skills to flourish in the modern world. We look to promote confident, curious, imaginative, resilient and organised learning in all our children. At the same time we nurture their personal and emotional development and a strong relationship between home and school is always maintained.

Thorpe House School

Thorpe House is based in the beautiful town of Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire. At Thorpe House our aspirations push us to achieve higher. There is no such thing as failure, only a desire to learn and become the best version of ourselves. As soon as they start in Reception we look to prepare our boys for the world to which we believe we should all aspire, one in which there is an emphasis on encouragement and recognition of our diversity and where we want the boys to consider not what they can do for themselves but what they can do for others. Through an enrichment programme that runs throughout our three year GCSE course, we build on the confidence that has already been nurtured in the earlier years to develop skills and empathy that will make them the leaders that we want and need to direct the course of our society in the future.

Planning and Building Control

Unsure which services you need?

If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.

Please note that many developments will require both.

What is planning?

Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).

You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:

• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building

• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties

• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes

• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas

• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access

• change the density of development in an area

• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties

• have an effect on existing trees

What is building control?

Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
