提到現場演唱的話，香港人絕對不會懷疑這位廣東流行歌手的演唱實力。在卡拉OK唱了衛蘭的熱唱歌十年， 拍攝團隊的許多成員都非常興奮終於能夠近距離接觸自己的偶像。衛蘭已算是資深藝人，我們真的非常驚訝 她提早就到達了拍攝地點，尤其是在她自己生日慶祝活動的當天。我們不僅對她的專業精神印象深刻，亦受到 她的樂觀態度深深感染。衛蘭的星途可能經歷過一段暗淡的時間，但我們明顯看到她已經準備好讓她的美聲回 歸，而且更肯定她將更能按照自己的步調而行。 When it comes to live vocals, Hong Kongers will hardly second guess this Cantopop star’s singing abilities. Having sung a string of Janice Vidal’s hit songs in karaoke lounges for the past decade, several members of the photoshoot team were excited to finally meet their idol up close and personal. Even though Janice is considered a showbiz veteran, we were genuinely surprised to have her arrive at the shoot early, especially on a day after her own birthday festivities. Not only were we impressed by her professionalism, she carried an air of spirited optimism. While the spotlight on the singer might have dimmed down for a period of time, it seemed clear to us that Janice was getting her groove back, and more assured than ever to march to the beat of her own drum.

Nevertheless, life in showbiz has not always been a bed of roses – Janice has fallen in and out of the spotlight in good and bad times, especially with the media’s constant scrutiny about her weight and image. Even when healthy-looking curves are embraced in Western media and regulations such as “model health law” in fashion capital Paris has been implemented to ban the use of underweight models as aesthetic examples, Hong Kong is still stuck in a culture obsessed with a “cookie-cutter” ideal of how a woman should look like. Converting to Christianity in 2009 along with her twin sister Jill (after the latter’s 2009 arrest for heroin possession in Japan), the religion has helped give Janice new perspectives and see things through the “eyes of love”. It was heartening to hear Janice speak about her current positive state – not only is she eating healthier and exercising regularly, most importantly, she’s learnt to tune out the superficial negativity and embraced beauty in her own terms. “I always say that a rose can never be a sunflower, and a sunflower can never be a rose. I see that in women – women are so beautiful in their special ways in all shape and size. Ultimately it’s what you feel about yourself.”

The past year has been a brand new chapter for the Vidal sisters as they were signed to their new label Warner Music Hong Kong. Having grown up in a musical household with a Filipino-musician father, her upbringing was deeply rooted to soulful, rhythm and blues sounds of Tower of Power, Kool & the Gang and Earth Wind and Fire. Determined to take the leap of faith and follow her passion, she hopes to break out from the conventional pop karaoke tunes and venture more into the soulful genre. Her latest single “Butterfly” is her first step in foraying into bluesy tunes. Besides the melody, its lyrics convey parallels to her desire to break out on her own. After a decade of “going with the flow” by following whatever her old label management planned out for her, Janice is ready to be more hands on with her artistic direction and creative process. It is inevitable to doubt oneself for experimenting something new, nonetheless her fans and label company have been supportive of her so far. She also credits that people today are more open and accepting to new sounds. “I believe people who like my music are on the journey with me. As I’m evolving, they’re evolving too… I have to use my brain more now!” she said with a hearty laugh.

Looking back, it has been more than a decade ago when Janice started out her career at 18 singing background harmonies for Leon Lai, one of Hong Kong’s ‘Four Heavenly Kings’. Since then, Leon and Janice developed a mentor-mentee relationship. Chuckling as she recalled the tough love he gave, such as nitpicking her stage mannerism, she was ultimately grateful for his guidance as he taught her to do her best and never let setbacks paralyse her. Filled with optimism, Janice is back in the game. Keeping up with the times, she is in the process of putting out more singles on digital platforms this year. While she had anchored solo concerts at Hong Kong Coliseum (the iconic local landmark for Cantopop singers), Janice is preparing for a more intimate-scaled concert for her fans in August with focus on connecting through the purity of her voice and music. In addition, she is set to venture her singing career into Greater China. In her spare time, the singer has a knack for oil and canvas painting, where some of her visually-stunning artworks can be seen on her Instagram. One day, she aspires to have the exhibited. As testament to her earlier hit song ”Love Your Talent”, it’s evident to us that Janice is getting her groove back.
