The East by Hopewell Real Estate is a mega-project that consists of the retail floors of a number of properties across the Wan Chai neighbourhood: dining mecca QRE Plaza, office and commercial property Hopewell Centre, office building Wu Chung House as well as serviced apartment GardenEast. The retail areas of the four properties feature a plethora of restaurants and bars, and have collectively built up a reputation as a dining destination.

Nonetheless, bringing dining experiences to Hong Kong isn’t all that The East has to offer. Outside Hopewell Centre, you’ll find a ‘CityTree’, a high-tech, free-standing installation that works to purify air, absorb pollutants, and combat air pollution. Produced with recycled materials, it purportedly boasts the same effects as 275 real trees. Made by Germany-based company Green City Solutions, this CityTree is the first to be installed in Asia. Looking to other innovative retail developments in Hong Kong, K11 comes to mind. Completed in 2009, the six-storey space in Tsim Sha Tsui, designed by New World Development, is much more than just a shopping mall. While it has everything shoppers would expect from a high-end retail project of this calibre, K11 is also marketed as the world’s first ‘art mall’. Exquisite artworks are to be found dotted around the property for shoppers’ enjoyment – think sculptures, decorations, ornaments on ceilings and even benches. Of course, exhibitions in shopping malls are nothing new – but these pieces are on permanent display.

Still in the development stages, The Mills sets about transforming a factory space in Tsuen Wan into something completely different. Taking over the former textile factory, which used to function as Nan Fung Group’s cotton mill, The Mills is a revitalisation and conservation project, set to become a hub of creativity upon completion in 2018. So what can we expect from The Mills? First and foremost, it will act as a hub for startups. A business incubator dubbed The Fabrica will take up a two-storey space, providing support to tech startups as well as their strategic partners. A highlight of the development is the MILL6 Foundation, which will take up a vast space at the property. A non-profit organisation that pays homage to the building’s past in textiles production as well as Hong Kong’s former role as an industrial hub, MILL6 will explore local culture through different medium. Plans for the non-profit include community engagement through a series of exhibitions and artist-in-residence programmes. These are being put on with the aim of exploring Hong Kong’s unique heritage, as well as supporting creative industries in the city. Announced back in 2014, which coincided with Nan Fung Group’s 60th anniversary, The Mills will also place a strong focus on providing a platform for innovators – both locally and abroad.
