50 Years of Full Mission On December 8, 1962, a small wooden boat set sail on the Amazonian Basin with the goal of carrying out a special task: to bring hope and the comfort of God’s Word to riverside dwellers. With this vessel, named “Luz na Amazônia” by Bible Society of Brazil (SBB), an outreach program that provides social, spiritual and medical assistance was born, which has been transforming reality in the communities assisted for 50 years. In this half century of adventures across the waters of Amazonian rivers, nothing stood in the way of the boats “Luz na Amazônia” I, II and III, their crew, partners and volunteers in accomplishing the mission entrusted to them. Throughout five decades, this rich universe of fortunes and misfortunes faced by Amazonian riverside populations, as well as all the assistance work carried out by the program, was registered with photos. Some of those photos have been selected to tell part of the history of this program and are published in this book. The goal of this book is not to provide a historical and/or scientific summary of this work, but rather to offer a collection of some of the touching moments that have been kept for eternity. It is a look at lives that had the opportunity to be changed through the full mission carried out by SBB’s Light in Amazonia program.

50 anos de missão integral Em 8 de dezembro de 1962, um pequeno barco de madeira começava a navegar na bacia amazônica, com o objetivo de fazer um trabalho especial: levar a esperança e o conforto da Palavra de Deus à população ribeirinha. Com essa embarcação, batizada pela Sociedade Bíblica do Brasil (SBB) de Luz na Amazônia, nascia um programa de assistência social, espiritual e de saúde, que há 50 anos vem transformando a realidade das comunidades por onde passa. Nesse meio século de aventuras pelas águas caudalosas dos rios amazônicos, nada foi empecilho para que os barcos Luz na Amazônia I, II e III, sua tripulação, seus parceiros e voluntários cumprissem a missão que lhes foi confiada. Ao longo de cinco décadas, esse rico universo de venturas e desventuras vivido pela população ribeirinha da Amazônia, assim como todo o trabalho de atendimento realizado pelo programa, foi registrado por meio de fotos. Aqui, nas páginas deste livro, estão reunidas algumas delas, que foram selecionadas para contar um pouco sobre a trajetória desse programa. Este livro não pretende fazer um apanhado histórico-científico sobre esse trabalho, mas sim ser a reunião de registros de momentos emocionantes e vívidos. Salmo 65.5 (NTLH) The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical forest of the planet, and includes territory belonging to nine nations: Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Suriname, Guyana, and French Guiana. In Brazil, the Legal Amazon region includes territory from nine Brazilian states: Amazonas, Pará, Roraima, Rondônia, Acre, Amapá, Maranhão, Tocantins and part of Mato Grosso, corresponding to more than 59% of the Brazilian territory, or approximately 1.73 million sq. mi.

The Amazonian region is full of contrasts. A rich biodiversity on one hand, with a population facing poor conditions on the other. It’s one of the regions with the lowest Human Development Index, lowest per capita income, and lowest life expectancy in Brazil.

When riverside dwellers get sick, they must travel many hours by boat to one of the few larger villages with substandard medical facilities. And the riverside dweller gets sick because of malnutrition and the lack of sanitation. Intestinal parasitisms, anemia, skin diseases and malaria are very common in the region.

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, the Amazonian population consists of 23.55 million people, or 12.83% of the Brazilian total. Riverside dwellers live in small villages and houses that are isolated from each other.

A Light that Shines for 50 Years The year of 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of an important outreach initiative that targets the Amazonian riverside population. Created by Bible Society of Brazil (SBB), the Light in Amazonia program provides medical, social and spiritual assistance to communities facing situations of extreme need, through the hospital-boat “Luz na Amazônia III” and the Bible Boat “Luz na Amazônia II,” both specially designed to navigate the Amazonian Basin. In the last 10 years alone, 118,000 people living on the banks of the Amazon River were benefited by the Light in Amazonia program. Light in Amazonia’s inaugural trip took place on December 8, 1962. Since then, SBB organizes periodic trips with predetermined itineraries reaching preferentially communities that are more isolated and distant from urban centers. The hospital-boat, designed to offer quality medical assistance, is equipped with infirmary, medical and dental consultation rooms, pharmacy and a medical laboratory, which enables emergency treatments and even small surgeries to be performed. Some of the program’s objectives are: improve the quality of life of riverside dwellers; promote social transformation; promote their spiritual and cultural development; strengthen family ties; and increase the visibility of the region’s social reality. The two vessels that currently operate in the program are used for distinct, yet complementary, purposes in the States of Pará, Amazonas and Amapá. The main goal of the “Luz na Amazônia II” Bible Boat–considered a true floating bookstore–is to offer Scriptures for affordable prices, thus making it easier for people, who otherwise would not have access to other bookstores, to acquire them. In 2011 and early 2012, the Bible Boat was completely refurbished to include a larger and more modern bookstore, focused on the public, in addition to a cultural space called Bible Museum. The “Luz na Amazônia III” boat visits small communities on the banks of the region’s rivers and streams. At first, the Light in Amazonia program’s task was to improve and

Uma luz que brilha há 50 anos O ano de 2012 marca o cinquentenário de uma importante iniciativa social, voltada à população ribeirinha da Amazônia. Criado pela Sociedade Bíblica do Brasil (SBB), o programa Luz na Amazônia destaca-se por levar assistência médica, social e espiritual a comunidades que vivem em situação de extrema carência, contando, para isto, com o barco-ambulatório Luz na Amazônia III e o Barco da Bíblia Luz na Amazônia II, ambos especialmente projetados para navegar na Bacia Amazônica. Somente nos últimos 10 anos, as ações do Luz na Amazônia beneficiaram cerca de 118 mil pessoas localizadas às margens do Rio Amazonas. A viagem inaugural do programa Luz na Amazônia foi realizada em 8 de dezembro de 1962. Desde então, a SBB promove viagens periódicas a roteiros pré-determinados, alcançando preferencialmente comunidades mais isoladas, distantes dos centros urbanos. O barco-ambulatório, projetado para proporcionar atendimento médico de qualidade, conta com enfermaria, consultórios médico e odontológico, farmácia e laboratório de análises clínicas, estrutura que possibilita realizar de atendimentos de emergências a cirurgias de pequeno porte. Entre os objetivos do programa estão: elevar o padrão de qualidade de vida do ribeirinho; promover sua transformação social, seu desenvolvimento espiritual e cultural, e o fortalecimento de vínculos familiares, além de proporcionar mais visibilidade para a realidade social da região. As duas embarcações, que atualmente integram o programa, realizam trabalhos distintos, mas complementares, abrangendo os estados do Pará, Amazonas e Amapá. The initial project of supplying Scriptures was soon expanded, becoming also a project of philanthropy, medical, dental and pharmaceutical assistance, and donation of clothing and food. The success of the Light in Amazonia program inspired SBB to develop similar initiatives in other regions of Brazil. Therefore, SBB established the Light in Brazil program, which, in addition to the Amazonian region, operates in the South, Southeast and Northeast of Brazil with two buses and a truck fully equipped to provide medical and spiritual assistance to communities facing situations of social risk and vulnerability.

Today, the lines of action of the program are: spiritual development; outreach and medical assistance; incentives to volunteerism and partnerships; educational and cultural development; and promotion of citizenship.

Over the past ten years, the Light in Amazonia program made 410 trips, benefiting 117,981 people, from 23,039 families, in 258,363 procedures. Those results were reached with the support of 1,789 volunteers. Light in Amazonia operates in more than 70 towns in the North of Brazil.

Light in Amazonia has taught me that everyone, regardless of their social standing, ethnicity, status, group, is a human being needing to feel loved. “If it weren’t for Light in Amazonia... Spiritual transformation is essential. The Word of God can change everything. We start by showing that everything in the Bible one can find in nature. It seems that they open their closed eyes. It fits very well, and then life flows smoothly. “Light in Amazonia encourages people to improve; it doesn’t just deliver ready solutions. Light in Amazonia works with prevention and spreads the Word of God. “I’m 72 years old, and have a lot of respect for the Word of God. It encourages me to face the ‘storms.’ I’ve learned that the best thing in life is the friendship of riverside dwellers. I have worked with love and joy, and planted a seed. My replacement is my son. “Para a universidade é uma oportunidade ímpar. É muito difícil conseguir manter um barco. Para os alunos, eles saem dos muros das universidades e podem usar o conhecimento em favor da comunidade. Por muitos anos a universidade ficou fechada entre aluno e professor apenas. É uma oportunidade de conhecer o nosso povo. “It’s a unique opportunity for the university. Maintaining a boat is very hard. And the students can leave the confines of universities and use their knowledge to help the communities. The university remained closed just to students and professors for many years. It’s an opportunity to get acquainted with our people. Medicine students didn’t know the reality faced by riverside dwellers.” Marli de Fátima Carvalho de Melo, Assistant Professor from Federal University of Pará, partner in Light in Amazonia for eight years.

“This project helped me after I reached rock bottom. I like to think that Light in Amazonia came to the island to assist me. I was in the desert. I had lost my brother and my husband. “Light in Amazonia is very important to us, because it brings both spiritual remedy and material remedy. We don’t have any medical assistance here. When we need it, we must travel hours by boat. Quando precisamos, temos de viajar horas de barco. Muitas vezes não dá tempo. Já tenho visto morrer muitas pessoas, crianças e adultos, durante essas viagens. “The Bible has taught me a lot of things. I learned to be humbler, love my fellow human beings, lead a better life, and believe more and more in God. “I got my first Bible from the Light in Amazonia program. The Bible contains everything that is good. Through it, we can strengthen our spiritual life, have inner peace and learn about God and Jesus. The Bible is food, a relief for our soul. Those who live in riverside communities in the Amazonian region have to travel to get medical assistance. This is hard, because the distances are very long, and we depend on boats and on the tide. “Tem horas na vida da gente que só Deus pode ajudar. Quantas vezes, num momento difícil, eu abri a Bíblia e comecei a ler. Então, foi como um bálsamo, como água fria que cai em cima de uma queimadura, como algo que vai limpando, que vai tirando aquele peso, aquela dor. Isso é a Palavra de Deus. O Luz na Amazônia é muito necessário aqui. Eu quero agradecer a todas as pessoas que têm ajudado o Luz na Amazônia. Peço que Deus possa abençoá-las cada vez mais. Nós, aqui, precisamos muito de ajuda. Mas sabemos que há gente nessa Amazônia precisando ainda mais do que nós.

So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God’s message, we should do it according to the faith that we have; if it is to serve, we should serve; if it is to teach, we should teach; if it is to encourage others, we should do so. Whoever shares with others should do it generously; whoever has authority should work hard; whoever shows kindness to others should do it cheerfully. Romans 12.6-8 (GNT).

Portanto, usemos os nossos diferentes dons de acordo com a graça que Deus nos deu. Se o dom que recebemos é o de anunciar a mensagem de Deus, façamos isso de acordo com a fé que temos. Se é o dom de servir, então devemos servir; se é o de ensinar, então ensinemos; se é o dom de animar os outros, então animemos. Quem reparte com os outros o que tem, que faça isso com generosidade. Quem tem autoridade, que use a sua autoridade com todo o cuidado. Quem ajuda os outros, que ajude com alegria. Romanos 12.6-8 (NTLH)
