AAAA NEWS

CONTINUING THE FIGHT

The dust has settled after the huge announcement of the new Mandatory Data Sharing Law From far and wide, both locally and internationally, we have been inundated with positive messages, emails and calls of support about this landmark law for our industry. On behalf of all of us at the AAAA, thank you – your support has been overwhelming. Amongst the exciting reactions, celebrations, and relief for so many in our industry, there was also a ground swell of perfectly valid questions and concerns about how the Law will actually work. You are probably aware by now that the law passed on the 24th of June, and will come into effect from the 1st of July 2022. The next few months is where the Government works through the scheme rules and clarifies definitions. We are being vigilant in monitoring and providing our guidance on the rules that are being developed. We do not want to see the Law eroded by additional regulations and interpretations that narrow what information we are able to obtain on fair and reasonable commercial terms. There are three main areas of enquiry around the Law that I’d like to clarify and address.

Safety and Security definitions With manufacturers given provision to qualify recipients of critical safety and security data in the new Law, there were questions raised around how safety data and security data will be defined. Specifically, the concern was that manufacturers may determine that everything is either security or safety related. I’m pleased to report that from what we can see so far, those terms are being defined very accurately, addressing those specific concerns. To elaborate further, in the scheme rules Safety is defined as information that may affect technician safety, and this has been narrowed down to high voltage systems for electric vehicles. For example, in order to de-power an electric vehicle, technicians may need to complete a study unit to ensure competency and safety in this area.

Thus, the definition of ‘safety’ does not include components on the vehicle or embedded in the vehicle that support safety of occupants and other road users, which could have been a long list. The issue of ‘Security’ in the scheme rules context is similar. Our understanding is this is being interpreted to support activities that relate to vehicle entry and immobiliser codes to protect the car owner from information sharing that could lead to vehicle theft.

Access Another common thread of enquiry from our members has been in relation to who can access this information. If you are in the business of repair, service, or modification you are entitled to receive the information on fair and reasonable commercial terms. This includes the entire supply chain because the supply of auto parts is an integral component of the business of repairing and servicing vehicles.

Third-party data providers This is undoubtedly a challenging area to navigate. The legislation is principles based and as such it says that it is against the law to withhold information, however it is not prescriptive about exactly how the information is to be provided. The car companies can’t deliberately make it difficult – by requiring purchase of their proprietary tools, but they don’t have to follow one standard method of supply. We are optimistic that there will be a great deal of information supplied through the thirdparty intermediaries because that’s how most of the industry secures the information that is needed. But we will be in a ‘wait and see’ pattern for a little while longer on this front. Importantly there is a clear safety net in the Legislation – efforts to frustrate the Law will be addressed. So, our watching brief is governed by a level of optimism that the car companies that don’t play nice will be picked up.

Skills Shortage As fantastic as it has been to see the Law go through after so much work, we cannot afford the luxury of a break. Looming large on our agenda is the ever increasing and very worrying labour and skills crisis. Finding staff, keeping staff and worrying about the future pipeline of employees is now the number one issue for our industry. And I don’t believe it is hyperbole to call it a crisis either. In fact, we know that we are short by about 30,000 technicians. And that is frankly an alarming number. On the ground, in workshops across the 6

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

country, this reality is exacerbated by our current situation with the unprecedented demand as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns and closure of international borders. I have heard directly from many workshops that are dealing with a huge surge in demand, with not enough staff to keep up. Clearly we need more staff, and we need more young people choosing to work in our industry. In the short term we are working with the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) to lobby government for urgent attention, including listing us on the Skills Priority List in anticipation of our international borders and skilled migration programs re-opening. The skills shortage issue is not something that can be solved overnight. Just as was the case with Mandatory Data Sharing, there is no simple, quick fix. We must be strategic, and patient. The issue is complex and multi-faceted, and needs to be tackled at Government level, the education and training level, and I would argue, at societal level. Automotive trades need to be encouraged as a worthwhile pathway for school leavers, and recognised as such. Encouragingly, we have learned a great deal from championing mandatory data sharing and we are building strategies and tactics that will enable us to achieve short, medium and long-term goals on the skills issue. Our resilience and dogged determination, of which we are now well known for, will help us engage in this new battleground, and allow us to find solutions for the betterment of our industry. We welcome feedback on your experience with labour shortages, and any questions you have about the new Mandatory Data Sharing Law. Please email us at info@aaaa.com.au or call us on 03 9545 3333.

4WD INDUSTRY TO FEATURE AT AUTO AFTERMARKET EXPO New 4WD Innovation Zone launched

The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) is proud to announce the launch of the 4WD Innovation Zone feature at the Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo, taking place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre across April 7 – 9, 2022. The Expo is the nation’s most comprehensive exhibition for the aftermarket industry, featuring the latest vehicle repair and servicing equipment, replacement parts, tools and accessories, plus industry experts sharing technology and trends. As part of the process of continuous improvement, the AAAA has launched a dedicated 4WD industry section at the Expo to provide an opportunity for companies involved in 4WD modification, accessories and tuning to promote their company through a trade only B2B platform. As an exhibitor there will be many ways to supercharge your business development. The Expo is a perfect platform to launch or showcase new products and services, or generate brand buzz through interactive activities and competitions. Innovative new 4WD products can be entered in the Expo Awards Program and product demonstrations on the show stage provide another marketing platform. Networking opportunities at the Expo will also be massive. Companies can connect with prospects face-to-face in a relaxed atmosphere and strengthen relationships with existing customers.

“We are always looking at ways to extend the appeal and value of the country’s premiere aftermarket show - an event run by the industry, for the industry,” AAAA Chief Executive Officer, Stuart Charity, said. “Given the Australian 4WD aftermarket industry is valued at $6 billion, comprises over 2,000 business and employs more than 70,000 Australians, a dedicated 4WD Industry space within the Expo is a logical step, and one the 4WD Industry has been asking for.” Other exciting components of the 2022 Auto Aftermarket Expo will include a modified and classic vehicle display area in the show concourse, celebrity appearances, interactive displays, demonstrations, competitions plus a comprehensive and free industry education and information program. “Interest in the 2022 AAAExpo has been unprecedented with over 75 percent of available space already allocated. And with major 4WD companies already locking in positions as foundation members at our new 4WD Innovation Zone, demand is expected to be extremely high for the limited spaces on offer,” Stuart said. “This is a not to be missed opportunity for 4WD companies looking for a boost to sales, connections and brand awareness across the industry.” The 4WD Innovation Zone will add to the Australian

Auto Aftermarket Expo’s massive 21,000 sqm footprint, which also includes the co-located Collision Repair Expo. And with a projected 400 exhibitors and up to 10,000 trade visitors over the three-day event, the 2022 AAAExpo is gearing up to be the best ever. “We look forward to hosting Australia’s best 4WD parts and accessory manufacturers, resellers and retailers across 7-9 April, 2022 in Melbourne. It is a great opportunity for the entire aftermarket industry to come together, to recognise and celebrate success during these challenging times,” Stuart said. To secure your space at the 4WD Innovation Zone as part of the Aftermarket Expo, please contact Expo partner, IEC Group: 0402 067 321 or nina@iecgroup.com.au To enquire about sponsorship opportunities, please contact the AAAA on 03 9545 3333 or michelle@aaaa.com.au For more information on the 2022 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo, visit www.autoaftermarketexpo.com.au

2021 STATE OF THE NATION REPORT LAUNCHED In this column, Capricorn Society’s Group Chief Executive Officer, David Fraser, takes a look at this new release

In 2020, Capricorn embarked on an ambitious project to look under the bonnet of our industry. We wanted to better understand the mood amongst Members in these difficult COVID-19 times, to really get a handle on the issues, trends and challenges affecting you, your business, and the industry as a whole. This work produced our first ever State of the Nation Report. Capricorn’s second annual State of the Nation Report is out this month and the news, considering the pandemic, is generally positive. More than 2,000 Capricorn Members took part in this year’s survey and overall the results show workshop profits are up. But not everyone has ridden out the pandemic profitably. State of the Nation 2021 found there are still plenty of places automotive businesses are leaving cash on the table, costing themselves potential profits, or taking unnecessary risks. Identifying opportunities to help our Members create more profitable and sustainable businesses is why Capricorn embarked on the State of the Nation project. This year’s report identifies the shortage of qualified technicians as a major problem, not enough workshop owners have a healthy work-life balance and too few of us are ready for the big technological changes coming. But it was also great to see big improvements in many of the areas we identified in last year’s report – with more shops now charging for diagnostics, tracking efficiency, marking up parts more profitably and getting their retirement and succession plans in order. State of the Nation 2021 is full of great insights and useful advice to create a more profitable business. You can download the full State of the Nation report today at capricorn.coop/caphub. If you are interested in learning more about how you can benefit by joining Capricorn, I encourage you to email join@capricorn.coop to arrange a visit from your local Capricorn representative. FIRST STUDENTS FOR NEW NATIONALLY RECOGNISED 4WD TECHNICIAN COURSE An industry first 4WD training program pilot is now officially underway

The new and nationally recognised 4WD Technician Course is creating a career development path for a new generation of upskilled technicians in the booming 4WD aftermarket sector. On Thursday the 17th of June, students attended Kangan Institute’s Docklands campus, to begin a new chapter in their career. The students become the first wave of technicians to take part in the country’s first 4WD specific program, the ‘4WD Accessories Technician Course.’ The Australian 4WD Industry is a $6 billion industry comprising more than 2,000 businesses and employing over 70,000 Australians, and the sector desperately needs an ongoing supply of the right skills to keep growing and meet consumer demand. The Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA)’s 4WD Industry Council (4WDIC) committed itself to developing a nationally recognised qualification. To bring the concept to reality, the 4WDIC enlisted the services of leading vocational education and training provider, Kangan Institute. The result is a pilot program developed to provide the specific skills and knowledge technicians need to effectively work and succeed in a 4WD accessories business. Under the watchful eye of Kangan Institute training specialists, the students will study a range of mechanical units, accessory fitting and electrical units, and upon successful completion, leave with a Certificate 2 in Automotive Service Technology.

The Certificate, and specialised new skills will aid employment and career progression opportunities for the students who have completed the course. Kangan Institute has been instrumental in guiding the 4WD Industry Council through the process of developing a program that would meet the immediate needs of the industry, with the flexibility to adapt and grow as the sector moves forward. The AAAA says it would like to acknowledge and thank Gavin Cribb and Ian Said from Kangan Institute for their tireless work and expertise. The AAAA also wishes to thank 4WD Industry Council Chairman Ben Lavis, Convenor Nigel Bishop, and the entire 4WD Industry Council for their vision and support of the 4WD industry. The AAAA says it looks forward to the new 4WD Accessories Technician Course playing a role in bolstering technician skills and inspiring the next generation to build a career in the Australian 4WD aftermarket industry. For more information on the course, including an overview on the course content, visit www.4wdcouncil.com.au/resources/ 4wd-accessories-technician-certificate/

Established in 2015 by executives who built their careers at General Motors Holden and Telstra, Applied EV has grown on the back of strong global demand for its technology and driven by a workforce sourced from Victoria’s extensive talent pool in advanced manufacturing, design and engineering.

The latest vehicle to be produced by Applied EV is Blanc Robot – a sophisticated autonomous-ready electric vehicle platform that can be integrated

“We welcome the support from the Victorian Government, which helps take our Melbournemade mobility solutions to the global market

– offering a product that is cost-effective, adaptable to business needs and good for the environment,” Applied EV Chief Executive, Julian Broadbent, said. Victoria has backed its highly-skilled manufacturing workforce by creating more than 1,000 new job opportunities for automotive sector employees under the Labor Government’s Local Industry Fund for Transition program. The support for Applied EV extends the Government’s investment in the autonomous and electric vehicle industry. The Government partnered with Transdev in 2019 to develop the first locally-built, fully electric bus with body construction and fit-out carried out by Dandenong-based Volgren.

LED AUTOLAMPS WARNS INDUSTRY OF ALLEGED COUNTERFEIT PRODUCTS The lighting design and manufacturing company is concerned consumers may be at risk of purchasing inferior products

LED Autolamps says it has been targeted by some eBay sellers who are alleged to be passing off fake manufactured LED Autolamps products, some of which are being marketed with LED Autolamps branding and approval numbers. “These sellers have been misleading consumers by passing off a fake Maxilamp range of products, stamping our approval markings on the products, and in some cases even selling these fake parts under LED Autolamps’ branding and promotional name,” LED Autolamps Managing Director, Tony Ottobre, said. Tony continued to say, “these sellers are passing off their products as LED Autolamps products by calling their copied lamp ‘Maxilamp’, a trademark we have used since 2009. Further, the copied lamps clearly show our ECE approval mark on the reflector, and also display LED Autolamps’ part numbers.” “We are very concerned consumers are being tricked into buying an inferior product and a product that does not comply with the ADRs through incorrect LED output,” Tony said.

“Consumers are purchasing these products believing they are genuine LED Autolamps product, and when they fail, they have attempted to return to the supplier for warranty assistance only to find they are not the original products they believed they had purchased.” LED Autolamps says it has taken a sample of the alleged counterfeit lights and had them thoroughly tested. “Our test reports justify our claim in the inferiority of these fake parts,” Tony said. In relation to the test reports Tony explains “we had these products tested to ADR/ECE standards and also environmentally tested, but as expected, the reproduced fake Maxilamp failed in ADR 49/00 – Stop Function, ADR 49/00 – Tail Function, ADR 6/00 2a – Rear Indicator Function and ECE Regulation R3 – Retro Reflector.” “Environmental testing was also performed, and the fake parts failed IPX7 with considerable water

ingress during the investigation. Further testing in Bundoora of the fake Maxilamp also resulted in LED failure within 12 hours,” Tony said. “In summary, these fake parts are not only being fraudulently marketed with our branding and our approval numbers, but they are also fundamentally a poor product with low quality components in the lamp and poor-quality sealing,” Tony said. “By purchasing genuine LED Autolamps product direct from us or our stockist, you can ensure you or your customer receive a safe and legal product that is fit for purpose and covered by warranties that lead the market,” he concluded. LED Autolamps is based in Bundoora, Victoria and has a European warehouse and sales operation and a Taiwan Manufacturing plant. Its operation and buildings are ISO Certified to either ISO9001:2015 or IATF16949. For more information, or to find your local stockist, visit www.ledautolamps.com

BOX HILL INSTITUTE EMPLOYER PATHWAY PROGRAM Box Hill Institute needs your help to build a better skilled automotive workforce to meet the demands of the current automotive workshop Box Hill Institute has embarked on a new employer pathway program and it is getting great results. To address the current skills shortage in the automotive industry, Box Hill Institute says it is working on attracting the right candidates to the Certificate II in Automotive Servicing pre apprentice course by working with automotive business owners, creating social media posts and getting the word out that having a career in the automotive industry can be a lifelong rewarding vocation. Students who have completed or are nearing completion of their pre apprentice course are introduced to prospective employers by a Box Hill Institute team whose sole purpose is to match the right candidate to the right employer. Employers are enjoying the fact that they don’t have to advertise for apprentices and students are loving the opportunity to secure employment at one of the participating automotive workshops.

every day, getting through their studies in the required time and displaying a great attitude towards work.

The candidates

Students who have finished the Certificate II course have also completed a health and safety induction and units such as Workplace Health and Safety, using workplace tools and equipment, following environmental requirements, vehicle servicing, inspecting and servicing braking, cooling, fuel, steering and suspension systems.

Students in this program have a passion for motor vehicles and want to gain meaningful employment in the automotive industry. They have shown commitment to getting a job by enrolling in the Certificate II in Automotive Servicing course, showing up to classes on time

every two vehicles sold was a SUV

This is clearly a reflection of consumers’ desire for a versatile vehicle that can meet their travel needs across urban and rural environments. This represents a clear role reversal since 2012, when Passenger Vehicles accounted for half of new vehicle sales. (with just over 3,500 sales YTD), the Kia Stonic (with just under 3,500), and the Hyundai Venue (just over 3,000 sales YTD).

Source: VFACTS

Whilst this is impressive, the strength of SUV sales is by no means a revelation for the Australian automotive industry. Franchisees and prospective franchisees will benefit from: • improvements to pre-entry disclosure requirements including: - introduction of a new key facts sheet which must be completed by the franchisor and provided to prospective franchisees, along with other disclosure documents to help a franchisee to make an initial assessment about a franchise offer - an updated information statement that must be given to anyone who expresses interest in buying a franchise to help consider the risks and opportunities associated with franchising - improvements to the scope of financial disclosure, including requiring additional information relating to goodwill - more specific disclosure relating to supplier rebates. • extra dispute resolution options. • a longer cooling-off period of 14 days, and new cooling-off rights for transfers. • a prohibition on franchisors passing on certain legal costs. • a prohibition on franchisors retrospectively and unilaterally varying franchisee agreements. The Government has also committed to significantly increase penalties for breaches of the Code, and Legislation is currently before the parliament. A trend that we have seen more recently though is the growing popularity of the ‘Baby’ SUV. While some of these models (for example, the Mazda CX-3) have been in market for a number of years, crossover SUVs have really burst out in popularity over the two years – going from ~5 percent of SUVs sold in January 2019 to more than 10 percent of the SUV market in June 2021. Bringing a unique value proposition that combines the best features of compact passenger vehicles and mid to large sized SUVs, a ‘Baby’ SUV affords customers the extra room, commanding view of the road and comfortable ride associated with a SUV, along with the lower price tag and reduced fuel intake of a small passenger car – the best of both worlds. We have seen the mid-sized SUV take over from sedans, and the Baby SUV now clearly seems to have its sights on the small car. Diving deeper into the category, growth is led by the Mazda CX-3 (with almost 9,000 sales in the first half of 2021), the Toyota Yaris Cross (with just over 4,000 sales YTD), Volkswagen T-Cross

The performance of the Toyota Yaris Cross is particularly impressive, as it was only introduced into the market in late 2020 – its trajectory (along with the downward sales trend for the ‘traditional’ Yaris), suggest that it could be cannibalising share from its stablemate. What impact will the growth of this new category have on the existing market segments? To answer this question, it is useful to look at year-on-year sales for medium and large passenger vehicles as SUVs have become more popular.

Source: VFACTS

There are only so many vehicles sold each year, and SUVs have clearly taken sales from medium passenger vehicles (down 63 percent since 2012) and large passenger vehicles (down 93 percent since 2012). Over time, we will see if the cost, drivability, and fuel economy of micro and light vehicles (for example, MG’s MG3) are enough to prevent the declines seen within the medium and large passenger segments. Historic results do however suggest that we are likely to see more growth in this emerging category, as OEMs launch more vehicles, and consumers take advantage of having these options available in market. NEW GENERAL MANAGER FOR IM GROUP A new General Manager of Circular Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Power Solutions has been announced for IM Group IM Group says it is pleased to announce the appointment of Dickson Leow as its new General Manager of Circular Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Power Solutions. The creation of the new role charges Dickson with the development of new opportunities within the electric vehicle and circular power solutions division of IM Group, as well as assisting with its expansion of Australia’s first scalable component reuse and resource recovery program of retired battery packs from hybrid-electric vehicles. Dickson brings over 25 years of experience to the team. He boasts an accomplished and innovative background which includes future mobility studies and hydrogen vehicle research, and has previously worked in both engineering and regulatory roles for companies including the Australian Road Research Board and Toyota Australia.

“I’m genuinely excited by the challenges that lie ahead at IM Group,” Dickson said. “The initiatives already launched to market are just the first step of what’s possible. The research and engineering team here is among the most inventive and forward-thinking in the country, and I think the market will be genuinely impressed by some of the projects we’ll launch in the very near future.” Injectronics, a subsidiary of IM Group, is a leading Australian supplier of quality new and remanufactured automotive electronic components, as well as a preferred repairer of electronic and mechatronic parts. Its battery remanufacturing program, announced earlier this year, has created a circular economy in which battery life is maintained long after manufacturer warranties have elapsed. “The (hybrid battery remanufacturing exchange) program Injectronics has pioneered under IM Group prevented a lot of e-waste, batteries, and toxic materials from going to landfill,” Dickson said. “Now that word is spreading to automotive workshops across the country, we can create a supply of remanufactured batteries ready for exchange as required, and the good thing about that is it allows us to begin diverting our skills and energies elsewhere. “Interest in hybrid vehicles is growing exponentially,

and alternative fuels such as hydrogen are already entering the market. By 2024, there will be more than 23,000 hybrid and electric vehicles in need of a new battery, and that is just one component of the car. “When we look at some of the technologies that will enter the market over the coming decade, we begin to understand that the need to maintain and repair these vehicles is something of a priority, and one I know IM Group is capable of meeting head-on.” IM Group is already looking to export remanufactured hybrid vehicle batteries to New Zealand as it invests further in research and development, new technologies and equipment, and aligning with universities to find cost effective solutions for the reuse and remanufacture of not only a variety of battery types, but other hybrid and electric vehicle components critical to a circular economy. TRADE FAIRS ARE ESSENTIAL Messe Frankfurt says trade fairs are essential for a healthy and successful economy

Trade fairs pave the way for economic upswings and are a key to prosperity: this is something Nicola Beer, Vice President of the European Parliament, and Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt GmbH, both emphasised when they met at the home base of Germany’s biggest trade fair organiser recently. Nicola also spoke forcefully about the importance of international trade fairs to a strong, stable and healthy economy. Ever since early 2020, the international trade fair industry has been facing huge challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic. When trade fairs were shut down, Messe Frankfurt says the marketing, communication, order and networking platforms that are so essential to every industry for establishing and maintaining customer relationships and generating sales disappeared almost overnight. “Trade fairs are international showcases and strongholds for their industries, and they make a major contribution to economic prosperity,” Nicola said. “If trade fairs and congresses cannot take place, this has consequences not only for exhibiting companies, but for the entire economy – and these are significant in scope. Trade fairs are essential for a healthy and successful economy.” Messe Frankfurt says that is why the European trade fair industry needs policymakers to send a clear signal that events can resume; stating that Spain, Great Britain and the Netherlands have already demonstrated major events such as trade fairs and congresses are possible once again. According to a study by the renowned ifo research institute, events at Messe Frankfurt reportedly generated immense purchasing power amounting to €3.6 billion annually nationwide in the past, not to mention a total of €657 million in tax revenues. The cancellation and postponement of trade fairs also has a huge secondary impact, not only on hotels, restaurants and bars, but also on transport and service providers and retailers. According to the ifo study Messe Frankfurt’s events safeguard over 33,000 jobs throughout Germany. Messe Frankfurt says some three-quarters of exhibitors have bemoaned the impact of trade fair cancellations on their acquisition of new customers. Trade fairs make it possible to vividly present innovations and emotionally address all the senses – opportunities that are not available elsewhere. Messe Frankfurt says that is why trade fair organisers, exhibitors and their service providers are now looking for a clear signal that trade fairs will be allowed to resume, with Messe Frankfurt stating that impressive safety and hygiene concepts, state-of-the-art ventilation systems, safely configured exhibition halls and new forms of visitor management guarantee maximum safety for trade fairs and congresses. NEW COMMITTEE TO EXPLORE ROAD SAFETY IN AUSTRALIA The ultimate goal of the committee is to decrease road injuries and deaths A new parliamentary committee has been established with the goal of identifying ways to reduce traumas and deaths on Australian roads. The Joint Select Committee on Road Safety will explore opportunities to improve road safety programs and policy. The committee will also investigate how to reduce road trauma in the workplace. More than half of all worker fatalities in Australia are related to vehicles. Additionally, the committee will also determine how to integrate road trauma prevention across agencies. “This inquiry will focus on the practical and immediate steps that can be taken to reduce trauma and deaths on our roads,” Committee Chair, Pat Conaghan MP, said. “The committee will be focusing on what can be done in the short to medium term to achieve real and tangible results. “We need to focus on action and cooperation in the prevention of further trauma and deaths on our road networks.

“We will also focus attention on ensuring the Federal Government’s 2021-22 Budget commitment of $3 billion over three years to the Road Safety Program continues to be effective.” Mr Conaghan also said that tens of thousands are hospitalised each year due to road accidents, and over 1,000 people die on Australian roads each year. The impact is greater on rural and regional Australians since two thirds of deaths on Australian roads in 2019 took place in regional or remote areas. Of course, for most Australians the roads are an unavoidable means of transport, especially in these rural areas. “We always have to remember that these are people not just statistics. They are mums and dads picking the kids up from school; truck drivers keeping our supermarkets stocked; cyclists and pedestrians heading to work; farmers driving into town to re-supply; and gig economy delivery workers,” Mr Conaghan said. Mr Conaghan emphasised the importance of

exploring all possible options to meet Australia’s road safety goals. “We must all work together towards zero deaths and serious injuries on Australian roads by 2050. Everyone deserves to feel safe on our roads,” Mr Conaghan said. DBC2 CELEBRATES 21 YEARS WITH EXCITING NEW LOOK Dale Brittain Communications originally launched in 2000 as a motorsport sponsorship agency In 2010, and on the back of significant growth, it rebranded as DBC2. Now, as DBC2 emerges with a fresh new look, AAA Magazine took the opportunity to talk with DBC2 Managing Director and Founder, Dale Brittain, about the timely refresh of his respected brand and the changes ahead in automotive marketing. AAAM: What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in your business over the past 21 years? DB: For the first 10 years we were very much a traditional marketing agency focused on sponsorship, PR and motorsport. In 2010 we made the move to represent the broader automotive aftermarket sector, and in hindsight I think we chose a really good time to do that. Digital marketing was just about to take off, and we were in on the ground floor. It was something that wasn’t on a lot of our clients’ radars at the time, and that put DBC2 in a really good position. It was by far the biggest change I’ve seen in my 35 years in automotive marketing, and we have a genuine focus on quality content in that space. AAAM: Is the refreshed look of DBC2 a response to those changes? DB: The refresh isn’t about DBC2 being seen differently by the industry; it’s about modernising the look of our brand to stay relevant. It coincides with the announcement that we have three new board members, all of whom are very experienced, highly successful businesspeople. We understand the need to keep ahead of the curve and to challenge ourselves before we have any chance of expecting our clients to do the same. There are a lot of changes happening in the industry, most of them positive, and DBC2 will be helping our clients to capitalise on those changes.

18

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

AAAM: Were there concerns that refreshing the look of DBC2 would impact brand equity? DB: As this is more a brand refresh than a rebrand, I wouldn’t see that there’s any reason to feel concerned. I remember when Qantas tweaked their logo… a lot of people questioned it at the time. But it’s gone on to be a great success for their brand. The reality is that all branding needs to keep with the times. We’re at the forefront of marketing the automotive aftermarket and our look should reflect that. It’s bold, fresh, and it stands out. We’ve done a lot of similar work for clients recently and we felt a need to do the same for ourselves. AAAM: Is there any change of leadership associated with the refresh of DBC2? DB: There’s two significant changes within our leadership team. The first is that Mitch Brittain moves to become Agency Director, and Anthony Crivelli becomes our new Creative Director. Whilst I have no plans to go anywhere, we have strategically created these roles to help steer and energise the business in its future direction. AAAM: Is there a relationship between the refresh of DBC2 and its 21st year in business? DB: We missed the anniversary by a few months, mostly due to COVID-19 and lockdowns, but this is our 21st year of business, and I think there’s a connection there. It’s about us growing up, becoming more ‘adult’.

The move to our new corporate headquarters in Port Melbourne, into a building that really speaks to who we are and that we’re really proud of, is another big part of that. In a humble way, we like to think that we’re a respected agency and we hope our clients feel the same way. AAAM: Are the changes currently happening in the industry a sign of optimism? DB: I think the aftermarket industry is in the strongest position it’s ever been in. It’s been led by a strong association in the AAAA; by a massive consolidation in the industry that’s created some very strong players; and by large businesses who are not only paving the way forward, but who I think are giving real credibility to our industry in the wake of the demise of local vehicle manufacturing. Significantly, that has put the automotive aftermarket on the radar of Federal and State governments, and that’s been a major help. For example, I don’t think the Motor Vehicle Service and Repair Information Sharing Scheme Bill would have been passed without the hard work of the players I’ve just mentioned. DBC2 will remain 100 percent focused on the automotive aftermarket moving forward. We feel that we can grow as our industry grows and become better recognised as the players in the industry become even stronger. We plan on trying to stay ahead of the times to keep our clients relevant and profitable, and I am genuinely and very sincerely excited about the future of our industry. AAAM: What does the new logo say about DBC2? DB: It says that we’ve maintained the equity we have built in our brand while moving out of our own comfort zone. It’s bold, and I like to think we’re trying to make a statement, but with a sense of humility. I mean, we know our stuff, and we know the industry, and we should have a logo that speaks to that, literally. We Speak Cars – it is absolutely who we are and what we do. AUTOMECHANIKA FRANKFURT PRIORITISES PERSONAL INTERACTION AND DIGITAL NETWORKING With a focus on innovative products and trends alongside professional development and networking The aftermarket sector will finally be meeting faceto-face again at Automechanika, from 14 to 16 September 2021. The organisers report there is a strong demand for personal interaction, as around 75 percent of the approximately 200 exhibiting companies want to have physical stands at the exhibition. It says what’s new is that Automechanika will take place at the same time as Hypermotion – the tradeshow of the logistics industry – at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre. They report this will give the automotive sector valuable inspiration, for example, with regard to resilient supply chains, fleet management and IoT systems. At the same time, this year’s Automechanika Frankfurt Digital Plus will be held in a more compact form, with a different model adapted to suit the prevailing situation, and also with a wide range of online products and services. “I’m really pleased that our ‘plug and play’ offer of fully equipped stands has been so well received and that so many companies who’ve signed up want to meet in person again in Frankfurt,” Automechanika Frankfurt Director, Olaf Musshoff, said. “However, even those who are not coming to Frankfurt can take part in our wide-ranging complementary programme. Thanks to our new online features, we’ll be providing additional options for presentation, for networking and for a wide international reach.” There has been considerable from companies worldwide, with exhibitors set to come to the show not only from Germany, but also from Belgium, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, Greece, Turkey, India, the United Arab Emirates, Korea, China, Taiwan and Australia.

Programme highlights at Automechanika Frankfurt Digital Plus As an innovation showcase, training centre and test lab for car dealerships and repair shops, the Future Repair Shop 4.0 will be working with the Institute for the Automotive Industry (IfA), demonstrating tomorrow’s technologies, processes and business models at the trade show. There will be eight learning stations on the customer journey with a focus on aftersales, giving visitors a hands-on experience of technological change. Motor industry professionals can gain valuable expertise and fresh inspiration for their own business in the future. Digitisation and new technical developments are posing new challenges to car repair shops on a daily basis. As before, hands-on workshops will be held at the trade fair. They will take place in cooperation with well-known partners and will be directed at car repair shops, in particular. There will also be several live accident repair demonstrations, hosted by FabuCar and the Car Doctors (Die Autodoktoren). In addition, the Automechanika Academy will be running a wide-ranging programme on all three days. Recent developments on the topics of Tomorrow’s Service & Mobility, Electromobility, 3D Printing and Car Wash will be presented in several visionary talks, given by professionals, and will be debated in panel discussions. Anyone who runs a car repair shop will be particularly interested in Schadentalk (a vehicle damage chat show) as well as a range of talks and panel discussions on the day-to-day business of a car repair shop. In times of climate change and environmental protection, the topic of a circular economy and remanufacturing is becoming increasingly relevant. The first Automechanika Remanufacturing Day will be therefore held on 15 September, in cooperation with APRA (the Automotive Parts Remanufacturers’ Association). On this occasion, several professionals will be presenting the topic from various angles, with opportunities for questions. For more information, visit www.automechanika.com

NEW DON KYATT SPARE PARTS BRANCH OPENS IN QUEENSLAND

The family-owned 4WD parts company has opened a new location in Townsville

Don Kyatt Spare Parts has announced the opening of a new store in Townsville, Queensland. The first Don Kyatt Spare Parts location opened in the suburbs of Melbourne in 1969. Since then, the Don Kyatt Group has expanded to a total of 17 warehouses across Australia, Africa, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand and Europe. Over the past 50 years, the Australian-based company has grown its Terrain Tamer brand into an internationally known name. Terrain Tamer’s range of over 40,000 spare parts were developed in Melbourne and then produced in partnership with the world’s leading manufacturers. The company says its products meet or exceed original equipment standards. “We’ve focused more on international expansion over the last 10 years, so although it’s not a capital city, Townsville is certainly an important strategic hub for our Northern Queensland customers,” Don Kyatt General Manager, Brent Hutchinson, said. “Would you believe the distance between Brisbane

and Townsville is almost the same as Melbourne to Brisbane? With today’s freighting environment, having stock closer to our customers is a key foundation for our fill rate and customer service standard, which has always been an important ingredient to our success. “It’s always exciting to open a new branch in a region which demands the quality 4WD parts that we offer. The cattle stations, mines and 4WD enthusiasts have been refreshing to work with and very welcoming. “We have two existing staff members who jumped at the opportunity to relocate and manage the new operation, in the beautiful location that is Townsville. Part of me is jealous of the experiences

they have ahead of them and the locations they will visit.” Don Kyatt Spare Parts supplies to a range of customers in over 80 countries, including mining contractors, emergency services, farmers, and recreational 4WDrivers. The new warehouse opened on the 1st of July. The company says there was a quick turnaround after taking over from one of its long-term stockists, Stewarts 4WD, who is retiring after 32 years. You can find Don Kyatt Spare Parts Townsville at 431 – 433 Woolcock Street, Garbutt, Queensland 4814. It can be reached by email at townsville@donkyatt.com.au or via phone at 07 4725 2199. ROAD TRIPS ARE HERE TO STAY! Monroe supports driver safety and is ready to help grow your suspension business With local travel here to stay for the foreseeable future, more than ever vehicle owners need to get their cars serviced to ensure they are in the safest possible running condition. An important vehicle safety factor that tends to be overlooked is the checking of worn shock absorbers. According to independently sourced market statistics, the current Australian industry standard for shock absorber replacement is eight out of every 100 vehicles serviced or inspected. Based on known shock absorber wear rates and national averages for annual distances travelled, it is clear from these suspension replacement statistics that not enough vehicles are being checked for shock absorber wear. If your workshop’s shock absorber replacement rate is low, then your customer’s vehicles may not be in the safest condition possible and you’re missing out on shock absorber replacement business. All too often, many customers only learn their shock absorbers need replacement when something has gone terribly wrong. By informing your customers of the increased emergency stopping distances, reduction of steering response and excessive tyre wear effects of worn shock absorbers, Monroe says you are assisting them to make sensible and highly responsible vehicle maintenance decisions.

ANBI BATTERY CONDITIONER BREAKS NEW GROUND ANBI says even new batteries can benefit from the fitment of an ANBI Battery Conditioner

The all-new ANBI under-bonnet battery conditioner is designed to improve the life of vehicle batteries, primarily by delivering highfrequency pulses to combat the build-up of electrically resistive materials, such as sulphate, on battery plates and spark plugs. Initially developed for use in military applications for the US Army, early battery conditioner technology was only suitable for vehicles that were driven regularly. The conditioning unit would draw power when vehicles were left idle, ultimately flattening the battery in approximately five to seven days if idle. As a result, applications for passenger vehicles were limited. ANBI says its new battery conditioner technology has addressed these issues. Featuring a voltage sensing switch that isolates the unit when the battery charge falls below 12volts, the ANBI Battery Conditioner is now suitable for installation in all vehicle applications, even if the vehicle is left idle for an extended period. Extensive, independent testing has reportedly proven that the ANBI Battery Conditioner can extend battery life by up to three times by removing sulphates from the battery plates. Sulphidisation occurs when active matters on the battery plates become lead sulphate as the battery discharges.

When the specific gravity of electrolytes is lower than 1.125, the amount of lead sulphates increases gradually. The variation of acid temperature and lead sulphates on the plates produces white crystalline solids and these crystalline solids reduce battery performance. The ANBI Battery Conditioner generates highfrequency pulses that remove the build-up of white crystalline solids from the battery plates. It is important to note that even new batteries can benefit from the fitment of an ANBI Battery Conditioner. After the new batteries leave the factory, sulfation begins immediately. Batteries are then stored and

then delivered to car manufacturers to be installed on the new vehicles. On average, when the consumer purchases a new car, ANBI says the battery is only 75 percent efficient because of the sulfation build-up. Once the ANBI Battery Conditioner is installed, the battery’s efficiency will be considerably improved once the vehicle has travelled approximately 1000klms. Several items combine to cause battery damage, but more than 80 percent of damage is due to vulcanisation. Vulcanisation is the build-up of lead sulphate crystals on the battery plates, which the ANBI Battery Conditioner combats. Other conditions that lead to battery damage include: • The battery is overcharged • The battery is not charged enough • The battery installation is not held solidly in position • The battery acid is too thick • There is too much sediment in the battery • The battery acid has frozen • The battery plates have broken down • Not enough acid in the battery • Impurities in the battery acid The impurities at the bottom of the lead-acid battery are white precipitates called sulphate crystals. The ANBI Battery Conditioner’s ultra-high frequency pulse dissolves these sulphate crystals, converting them into electrolytes, allowing the battery to exchange electrons again. ANBI says its Battery Conditioner will not only increase the battery life by up to three times, but

installation can significantly decrease the market demand for lead-acid batteries and waste recycling. It says it can make outstanding contributions to environmental protection in terms of battery pollution, which lessens the damage to nature. The global consumption of lead-acid batteries is up to 0.8 billion units. Accordingly, more and more wasted batteries need recycling and proper disposal, so it is a big challenge to environmental protection. If the waste batteries are not properly disposed of, the heavy metals of the batteries will pollute the whole environment, causing irreversible damage. For example, lead intoxication will affect the entire body, damaging the nervous system and sanguification mechanism, which causes deaths in children and the elderly. Among heavy metals, lead and cadmium are the most harmful to human beings. ANBI explains that

other heavy metals cause the crops to wither or the spikes to empty, but lead and cadmium do not affect the growth of the plants. Because the human body cannot digest the heavy metals on its own, it explains people can be intoxicated by eating the contaminated crops with lead and cadmium. Furthermore, the harmful effects can be magnified through the food chain, accumulating in our bodies, which is detrimental to human beings. Therefore, it is crucial that car batteries consumption is reduced and that used batteries are recycled correctly. With a recommended retail price of only $79.50, the ANBI Battery Conditioner comes in at about half the new battery cost. ANBI says this represents excellent value when you consider that testing has shown it can extend battery life by up to three times.

The ANBI Battery Conditioner can also resuscitate a low battery when recharging, with the ANBI Battery Conditioner installed on the battery at the time of charging. Testing has proved that installing the ANBI Battery Conditioner onto the terminal of a flat battery before charging can restore battery efficiency to approximately 80 percent. ANBI says the all-new ANBI Battery Conditioner has been tested to ensure it meets all international automotive specifications, proving that it will deliver outstanding performance, even in the most extreme conditions. The ANBI Battery Conditioner is suitable for a broad range of applications, including automotive, marine, agricultural, and industrial equipment. From Burg Design

The new generation Ford Mustang is now a very popular model in our Australian market and as such many special accessories are now available for those owners wishing to upgrade the performance and appearance. However, Burg Design says one important item seems to have been forgotten on the latest models fitted with the quad four exhaust tail pipes. The specialist designer and developer of many unique Auto Accessories over the past 50 years has developed a set of four big and bold Euro style exhaust tips for the Mustang that it says only take a few minutes to install. Burg Design states that the transformation offered by installing these tips “is simply amazing.” Apart from the stunning improvement in appearance, these new Burg Design Mustang exhaust tips are said to be very functional. Burg Design explains that the standard angle cut four pipes have very sharp edges and it is very easy to end up with serious nicks and cuts on your hands by simply washing/detailing this model.

By installing the Burg Design tips, the company says you can eliminate this potential problem while dramatically improving the rear end styling of the Mustang. The new Mustang tips were designed in Melbourne and Burg Design says they have been manufactured to the highest quality standards possible using chrome plated stainless steel and are designed to last the life of the car. Burg Design Pty Ltd is located at 28 Bignell Road Moorabbin in Victoria. DE-SOLV-IT MULTIPURPOSE CLEANER Tough on grease and grime, friendly to the environment A degreaser cleaner is designed to remove grease, oils, handling soils, fingerprints, and other contamination common in assembly and motor repair. In the market, you can find heavy duty degreasers, water-based degreasers, solvent based degreasers or degreasers for specific use. Sometimes, a solvent based multi-purpose cleaner works just as well. The objective for a degreaser is to remove the offending stain quickly, avoiding as much wiping and scrubbing as possible. Degreasing solvents are commonly packaged as an aerosol for convenience. However, its flammable nature may not be ideal for use near sparks or open flames, not to mention that it is not environmentally friendly. N-Propyl Bromide (nPB), Trichloroethylene (TCE) and Perchloroethylene (Perc) are commonly used to provide cleaning performance in a non-flammable formula. They are highly toxic chemicals and potential health risks need to be taken into consideration when frequently exposed to them.

According to De-Solv-it, performance, efficacy and safety are their top criteria in their research and development of their product range. The De-Solv-it Multipurpose Cleaner is a concentrated, solvent based product with natural citrus cleaning power. It is designed to safely and effectively remove tough grease, grime, sticky residues and dirt while smelling wonderfully fresh. For 40 years, De-Solv-it says it has solved the toughest cleaning jobs and quickly become the “go-to cleaner” for tradies, professionals and households. It reports that De-Solv-it Multipurpose Cleaner has been the CHOICE recommended stain remover/cleaner in Australia and New Zealand for many years, and has now also gained global recognition. Being a multi-purpose cleaner, De-Solv-it is extremely versatile. You can use it on benchtop, work station, equipment, tools and assemblies. It can work just as well as a grease/oil stain treatment on your clothes before you put them in your washing machine. It is not flammable, and the trigger spray packaging

makes it very easy to use and considered a safe option to use near sparks or hot surfaces. Just spray on to saturate the affected area and leave for a few minutes for the product to activate before wiping or scraping. The De-Solv-it range of products is biodegradable, so “if you have any tough stains, grease and grime, De-Solv-it naturally.” The products are available in Coles (cleaning aisle), Bunnings, Mitre 10, Home Timber and Hardware and other leading retailers. INJECTRONICS HAS AN EYE ON SAFETY

The company aims to address an often-overlooked problem with its new ABS service program Melbourne-based Injectronics is well-known for the services it provides, including testing and repairing a wide range of control modules and related components for passenger and commercial vehicles. Injectronics also services a number of electronic and mechatronic automotive components. The company says it has a focus on innovation as it seeks to identify and address areas of concern to thoroughly maintain vehicle technologies in a safe and cost-effective manner. Recently, Injectronics has turned its attention to the servicing and upkeep of anti-lock braking systems (ABS), which is something that is often overlooked. Injectronics recognises that the anti-lock braking system is one of the most significant advancements in road safety and says it has been proven to reduce frontal collisions by as much as 35 percent. When there is a problem with the ABS, a warning light may pop up on the instrument panel. Other

warning signs include wheel or pressure sensor fault, low-voltage related fault, or even intermittent ABS disengagement. Injectronics may also identify an issue with the ABS modules during a routine vehicle servicing with a simple scan tool. All of the common anti-lock braking system issues, which are especially prevalent in older and highmileage vehicles, can reportedly be addressed by Injectronics through its ABS service program. The company states that it can resolve most ABS faults in just one or two days, which will likely save time compared to a repair at a dealership. Injectronics also claims to be significantly more cost effective, stating that in the event that a supplied module is unable to be repaired, Injectronics can usually offer a replacement unit. After completing a repair, a hydraulic function test on repaired units is completed to ensure correct functionality. This test is carried out on test equipment that was designed in house and which Injectronics says was the first of its kind in

the world. All repair work is covered by a 12-month warranty on workmanship. For more information on the test, repair, and service of anti-lock braking systems, or for any other vehicular electronic or mechatronic issue, you can contact the Injectronics technical hotline on 1300 308 060 (Australia) or 0800 535 547 (New Zealand). THE HULK PROFESSIONAL SERIES

Improve driving performance with a Quick Response Electric Throttle Controller The latest product included in the HULK Professional Series is a Quick Response Electric Throttle Controller meant to enhance a vehicle’s driving performance. These products are available from CoolDrive Auto Parts, one of Australasia’s largest automotive parts distributors. The Quick Response Electronic Throttle Controllers are designed for modern vehicles that use “fly-by-wire” technology, specifically vehicles without an accelerator cable.

In these types of vehicles, there is often a delay between the time the accelerator pedal is pressed and the time the signal gets to the throttle. This is commonly known as “lag.” The HULK Professional Series Quick Response Electronic Throttle Controllers shorten the response time between the accelerator and throttle in order to reduce or in some applications completely eliminate the lag time. CoolDrive Auto Parts says they are easy to install in as few as five minutes with the included fitting guide, and there’s no wiring required. With over 35-part numbers, they are available for most vehicle makes and models and can be used to improve vehicle response and are said to be ideal for towing trailers or caravans. The Quick Response Electronic Throttle Controllers come with six switchable modes, including Comfort, Sports, Performance, Automatic, 4x4/Eco and Standard. Each controller also has 36 settings to accommodate a range of driving conditions.

38

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

The new Automatic mode is designed to study driving styles and adjust depending on the situation. It gives both power and fuel economy when needed. The controllers also come with an LED Brightness Sensor, which can automatically adjust the display based on the amount of ambient light available. Another notable feature is the Anti-Theft Function. When activated, a vehicle will start and idle but will not accelerate without the input of a PIN. CoolDrive Auto Parts says the features of the Quick Response Electronic Throttle Controllers work together to improve driving performance, and enhance the product offerings of the Hulk Professional Series sold by CoolDrive Auto Parts. MAKING MECHANICS’ LIVES EASIER With technically refined and long-lasting MEYLE-HD parts An increasing number of recalls, poorly conceived technology in the vehicle and in the installed production parts, as well as complicated installation and removal often lead to anger and frustration for garage businesses and drivers. To improve product quality and make life for mechanics easier, Hamburg-based manufacturer MEYLE goes one step further during its engineering process. The manufacturer says its MEYLE-HD products are technically superior to OE parts, whilst the reinforced and optimised design and high-quality materials make them more durable and reliable. As a result, they reportedly simply last longer and often outperform OE parts.

Improvements through manufacturing expertise and technical know-how To ensure MEYLE-HD parts meet the high expectations of customers, garage businesses and drivers, MEYLE explains it has established a multi-stage re-engineering process performed by its experts. MEYLE engineers analyse OE parts, their weaknesses and potential for improvement, use their findings to develop better parts and are involved in the entire process, from development to manufacture, at MEYLE’s own production facilities or at those of its international production partners. MEYLE’s manufacturing expertise and the engineers’ technical know-how reportedly ensure that vehicles all over the world quite simply remain roadworthy for longer and are more reliable. The Hamburg-based manufacturer says it knows the market requirements and the daily routines in the workshop very well and therefore focuses its product development on solutions that are precisely tailored to the needs of the workshop employee. Additionally, MEYLE gives a four-year warranty on its MEYLE-HD parts.*

further enhanced its manufacturing expertise with its own production facilities in Turkey. MEYLE has two own production plants which manufacture steering and suspension and rubberto-metal parts with 25 years of production know how. All of MEYLE’s expertise and the engineering knowledge that comes from the manufacturing and production process at own plants are applied to the specifications of further MEYLE product lines like MEYLE-ORIGINAL or MEYLE-PD. On top and to ensure the high-quality standards during the manufacturing process, MEYLE’s quality engineers also audit the production partners at regular intervals.

Unique solutions reducing costs and repair time One example of how improvements and innovative thinking can improve parts in comparison to OE versions, is the MEYLE-HD slot bushing kit with matching installation tool. This product was developed by engineers and product managers of the MEYLE steering and suspension team. The in-house experts have accompanied and controlled the entire process chain – from the initial idea through development to production and comprehensive quality tests.

MEYLE manufacturing expertise: unrivalled precision

The impulse for the product innovation came from the analysis of the repair on the BMW control arm: in contrast to the OE version, defective bushings on the BMW rear control arm can be replaced separately in pairs with the MEYLE kit - a repair solution that is reportedly not yet available from the OE side. The MEYLE kit comes with the appropriate tool which previously had to be solved by the cost-intensive replacement of the complete control arm.

In recent years, MEYLE has significantly expanded its research and development expertise and has

MEYLE has developed a specialised tool to ensure seamless installation and removal of the bushing

and offer garage businesses a comprehensive package with the ready-to-install slot bushings and tools. The bushings are already pre-compressed to installation size and enclosed in an installation sleeve. Because the installation sleeve is longer than the bushing, the tool is guided during insertion, preventing the tool from slipping off. The environment benefits too. Produced with high energy, the aluminium body of the control arm can be used again, with any waste associated with the use of the repair solution limited to a few rubber and aluminium parts. MEYLE also proves its worth in a weight comparison: at 600 g, the two MEYLE bushings are lighter than the OE control arm, which weighs nearly 4 kg.

Expert aftersales support and technical advice MEYLE also makes sure the garage businesses using MEYLE components can rely on them when it comes to aftersales support. The technical services team is available for questions and the technical trainer team advises on usage and tips for numerous products. MEYLE has also set up online technical trainings with more to come and further tips and tricks are available on the MEYLE YouTube channel. Bosch says that with its range, you will find the right component for practically every vehicle while benefitting from first-class Bosch quality and also ensuring customer satisfaction.

Innovations from Bosch have had a decisive influence on automobile history and as one of the world’s largest parts suppliers to the automotive industry, Bosch explains that it significantly contributes toward making driving safer, cleaner and more economical. Bosch says there are a number of reasons to choose its brake pads.

Research and development

Global trusted brand

Bosch says it is the world’s leading supplier of antilock braking systems (ABS), traction control systems (TCS) and electronic stability programs (ESP).

Bosch is a renowned global automotive innovator with over 90 years of brake development.

It makes a substantial investment each year in the research and development of braking products and systems. With continuous development and the use of innovative techniques and materials, Bosch assures product quality through constant checks during the entire production process. Bosch states that its technological competence is evident in the fact that it is a world leader in the number of patent applications it submits each year.

Vehicle brakes are subjected to extreme loads. For example, braking horsepower is about 10 times engine horsepower, which is why brake pads reach such high temperatures. During long mountain descents or when driving in stop-and-go highway traffic, temperatures can easily reach as high as 650°C. To ensure safety, Bosch says brake pads therefore need to be regularly inspected and replaced only with high quality products, such as Bosch brake pads.

Quality and performance guaranteed Bosch European brake applications are designed to meet the increasing demand of today’s vehicles. Bosch explains that its brake pads have been developed to withstand extreme loads and are manufactured from especially high-quality materials. It says that extensive performance and NVH dynamometer testing along with extreme environment testing ensures Bosch brake pads demonstrate a high level of performance and service life before being approved for sale.

REDARC HELPS MITIGATE RISK AFTER ROLLOVER The company offers products that will reportedly decrease the fire risk in the event of a rollover In a heavy vehicle rollover scenario, the primary danger obviously comes from the initial impact, but there are additional dangers to consider as well. One of these is the electrical system, which can spark and create a fire due to leaking fuel or flammable exposed goods. REDARC’s Battery Master Isolation Switch (BMIS) and Roll Over Sensor (ROS) have been designed to safely isolate batteries in 12v and 14v applications. These products are made in Australia and are trusted by brands like Kenworth. The company says it has put an emphasis on safety and reliability in the product’s designs, and it complies with stringent industry standards, including the latest Australian Dangerous Goods Standard AS2809;2020. The BMIS and ROS feature an ISO26262 rated dual redundancy system to avoid false triggering. The BMIS is ergonomically designed so that the four cables extrude from its side.

This gives it a smaller installed footprint than some popular alternatives. During the development process, the BMIS underwent extensive independent testing and validation, including rugged field trials, to confirm that it could be fitted as OE equipment. The BMIS can either be installed on a new model or as a retrofit. The company provides a variety of accessories to ensure the retrofit installation is as simple as possible. When the BMIS is combined with REDARC’s Roll Over Sensor (ROS), heavy-duty vehicles can meet AS2809 roll-over sensing requirements. Together these products will instantly shut down the vehicle’s engine and electronics when it reaches an angle of more than 45 degrees. REDARC says this significantly lowers the chances of a spark. The way these two products work together with the system’s dual fault protection helps to prevent false triggers from wiring faults.

The ROS is designed with multi-axis dual accelerometers that provide multiple detections. It will isolate within the three second window required by Australian standards and the system’s trigger signal also makes BMIS activation more reliable. REDARC states that the BMIS and ROS can provide additional protection for not only dangerous goods vehicles but any vehicle that has the potential to roll over while electronics are in use. The BMIS and ROS have been designed, developed, and tested in Australia. To find out more, visit www.redarc.com.au/heavy-vehicle-safety

INVICTA LITHIUM BATTERIES Now with a seven-year, full replacement warranty As a relatively new brand among the masses of batteries in the lithium battery industry, Invicta says it has quickly established itself as a leader and is becoming renowned for its high-quality product, excellent customer service, and technical knowledge. Further to this and to prove a point that its lithium batteries are among the best and most reliable, Invicta has recently unveiled a “market first” seven-year full replacement warranty on its deepcycle range. Invicta notes that this is not an extended warranty that you need to buy or a pro-rata warranty. Instead, it states the Invicta seven-year warranty is “exactly what it says it is and is unheard of until now.” Invicta says it can provide this level of warranty because its deep cycle batteries have undergone a rigorous testing regime that has proven it is manufactured using the highest quality components available.

This testing has included real-world independent cycle testing and IEC Certification, some of which are reportedly the first to be completed in today’s market. The real-world testing, which continues to this day, has kept the battery in continuous discharge and charge for over three years. Invicta says this resulted in the battery completing over two cycles per day and easily surpassing its claimed 2000 cycles some time ago. In addition, Invicta says the battery and its cells have also undergone IEC Certification to ensure it can operate safely and that its performance is true to what is being advertised. Invicta lithium batteries are available in a wide range of sizes from 12V – 48V with Bluetooth monitoring and are said to be perfect for a range of applications, including 4WD, Caravan, Marine and Industrial. Built to withstand the harsh and rugged Australian environment, they feature aluminium encased

prismatic cells and a robust internal design with integrated BMS, solid busbar connectors and a strengthening frame for complete confidence. Invicta is supported and developed by SPB, a company which says it has more than 25 years in the battery business and boasts a highly knowledgeable technical team lead by Director and Electrical Engineer, Ryan Hammond. SPB says this combination of proven success in the industry and battery knowledge ensures resellers and customers can be confident they’re getting a product that they can rely on today, tomorrow and many years to come. JLM LUBRICANTS LAUNCHES THREE NEW PRODUCTS

The company is committed to releasing new products for professional motor mechanics JLM Lubricants explains that it is a global brand serving the automotive aftermarket space. The company has focused on introducing new and improved products to help professional motor mechanics get the job done. Recently, JLM has announced the launch of three new products: a multi spray, an engine oil stop leak, and a spark plug/injector loosener. JLM says that its new injector loosener will provide “a lifeline to injectors that would otherwise have to be drilled out.”

It offers a strong cooling effect that maxes out at -40 degrees Celsius. This causes micro cracks that release the bond between the injector and the engine to allow for disassembling without breaking. “It’s not always the case that a stuck injector is destined to be drilled out,” JLM founder, Gilbert Groot, said. “With this product the stuck injector or spark plug can be loosened, but should it be impossible to extract, the mechanic knows they’ve done everything possible before resorting to drilling. “Our inspiration for this product was on the back of the global reaction to our GDI Cleaner. Mechanics were asking for this as a natural partner. “The two go hand in hand as part of the modern mechanic’s toolkit. And the motorist is spared the cost of footing the bill for a new injector. “We remain steadfastly committed to the professional mechanic in the 40 countries where our products are used. “Our mission is to innovate, improve and react without delay when we can see a compelling need to go back to the drawing board. These three products are the tip of the iceberg with more to follow in quarter two.” For more information, visit www.jlmlubricants.com 58

FREE YOUR TRAILER FROM MAINS POWER Trailer operators know the hassle of having to connect their trailer to 240v AC mains power overnight or in between jobs

This is not only a waste of time and power; it can also limit where and when the trailer can be used. REDARC says its new BCDC1212T takes its market leading BCDC solution and focuses it on work trailers. It says it is ideal for trailers featuring hydraulic pumps and winches, such as dump, boat and car trailers as well as liftgate trucks. REDARC says it is a versatile 12V, 12A input current limited on-trailer DC charger and works in both 12V and 24V applications. By charging while on the move, the trailer battery is always ready to go, freeing it from the shackles of AC mains power. The BCDC1212T is installed on the trailer, close to its battery. With the trailer connected to the vehicle and the engine running, the BCDC1212T takes DC power from the vehicle’s alternator and uses this to charge the trailer’s battery. Many modern vehicles now feature smart alternators, these limit power production in the name of efficiency. The BCDC1212T is compatible with such alternators and works by boosting the voltage regardless of alternator type. REDARC says this technology also helps overcome voltage drop caused by long cable runs. Like REDARC’s other BCDC chargers, the

BCDC1212T is compatible with common battery types such as standard lead acid, calcium, gel, AGM and lithium (LiFePO4). While it shares many similarities to the rest of REDARC’s BCDC range, the BCDC1212T is uniquely designed with trailers and work applications in mind. Input is limited to DC only (no solar), improving value for trailer operators. REDARC says it is prewired with a customised wiring harness, compatible with typical sevenpin round trailer plugs. This allows it to use the existing 12V auxiliary power available on these plugs, making installation “a cinch.” The BCDC1212T features fully sealed electronics and is therefore moisture, dust and mud resistant, allowing for external installations, such as on a trailer’s A-frame, nose cone or on the back of a liftgate truck. THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED The origins of ARB go back to 1975, when company founder, Tony Brown, was inspired by a 4WDing trip through the top end of Australia

Today the company employs more than 2,000 people, many of which can be described as serious 4WD enthusiasts. Back when Tony Brown started the business, 4WDers relied on homemade or ill-fitting equipment that was not designed for extensive Outback expeditions. Endless corrugated roads, extreme temperatures, and the heavy loads carried by Australian travellers were tremendously punishing on vehicles that regularly tackled these kinds of conditions. Tony’s many years spent toiling on his Series 1 Land Rover proved highly beneficial to others in the top end during his travels. Damaged bull bars and broken roof racks ensured Tony’s expertise was called upon regularly. Through this experience, an idea was born: well-engineered, durable equipment that would meet the rigorous demands of 4WD owners. After one of his many top-end adventures, returning home to Melbourne, Tony put theory into practice and began working in the family garage to address some of the product deficiencies he’d encountered on his trips. “It was exactly what Australian 4WDers had been waiting for and ARB, the initials of Anthony Ronald Brown, was founded,” ARB Director of Sales and Marketing, Matthew Frost, explained. Today, ARB says it is Australia’s largest manufacturer and distributor of 4x4 accessories. “We have a vast international presence, with offices in the USA, Europe, and the Middle East, and an export network that extends through more

than 100 countries around the globe,” Matthew explained. “Our philosophy, however, has never wavered from its original course; quality, reliability, and practicality above all else.” Tony’s two brothers, Andy and Roger, were quick to join the business as well. One, an MBA, was able to inject his business skills, and the other was a skilled engineer, and together the three grew the business quickly, leveraging their complementary skill sets. “While Tony’s initial focus was on roof-racks, it was not long after launching the business that he started dabbling with bull bars and today, these are still the cornerstones of ARB’s continued success,” Matthew explained. “It wasn’t long before the trio outgrew the confines of the family’s garage, moving the business to a rented factory in the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

“Of course, our exponential growth over the journey has seen us move many times. Even today, our international headquarters are still located in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.” While Founder Tony Brown left the business just before Matthew started with ARB in 1993, Andy and Roger are still actively involved in the business today; Roger as Chairman, and Andy in the role of Managing Director. ARB’s exceptional growth can be tracked in line with Australia’s ever-increasing appetite for 4WDs and their appreciation of quality products that are designed to perform even in the harshest conditions. “One of the big game-changers in our industry is the launch of a new vehicle,” Matthew explained. “The first was the launch of the Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series in the early 1980s.” The 40 Series created a massive demand because it was tough, reliable, fuel-efficient, and that combination attracted the attention of an awful lot of people. As a result, the team at ARB designed a range of protection and storage products specifically to suit the 40 series cruiser, effectively securing their position as Australia’s largest manufacturer and distributor of 4x4 accessories “The Hilux was also a great vehicle for us,” said Matthew. “It changed the way Australians purchased 4WDs. Before the Hilux and the 40 Series Land Cruiser were available, people would have been buying old Land Rovers and things like that. “As the vehicle selection improves, more people started buying them, and then there was more demand for our products, and that still rings true today.” The Hilux was one of the first vehicles for which ARB developed a complete fit-out, and their range

included a bull bar, rear bar, side rails, and of course, a roof rack. “By then, we had also started selling driving lights, as well as bringing more products into the business. That was a very key moment for ARB,” Matthew said. Another defining moment for the business occurred in the late 1980s when they made the decision to start opening up international markets. “We took our ARB air locker to SEMA and the interest it generated was phenomenal,” Matthew explained.

and that was very much a product that got us into the overseas market and really established ARB’s brand in North America,” said Matthew. In 1987 the company went public, which provided them with the capital to invest in growing their suspension offering, allowing them to acquire the iconic Old Man Emu brand and bring it under the ARB umbrella. “We were already one of the largest Old Man Emu resellers when we purchased the company, so it was a great fit for the business.” Matthew explained.

For those who do not know, ARB’s Air Locker is an air-operated locking differential that was initially designed by Tony Roberts. ARB purchased the design from Tony and used their vast engineering expertise to improve the product before taking it to America.

“Once the purchase was finalised, we focused on growing distribution and the product range in order to complement our existing offering.”

“The Air Locker was a huge hit at SEMA; the industry had never seen anything like it over there,

“Our international footprint is huge and continually growing,” said Matthew.

Today, ARB products are sold in well over 100 countries, of which ARB-owned companies service many.

“Take North America, for example. We have got ARB-owned warehouses on both the East and West Coasts. We’ve also got ARB Europe and a similar setup in the Middle East and Thailand.” More recently, ARB has acquired a canopy manufacturer in the United Kingdom. “This latest acquisition gives us an excellent manufacturing base in the UK and will provide us with the opportunity to expand our European operations,” Matthew explained. “We also purchased a similar business in New Zealand, which again increases our global manufacturing footprint.” More recently, ARB has announced that from July 2021, ARB is now a Ford-licensed accessory. This is big news for an aftermarket company like ARB, as for the first time, ARB says aftermarket products will be backed by a full five-year factory warranty. “What it means to consumers is that if you order a new Ford Ranger and specify you want a bull bar on the car, Ford will sell you an ARB bull bar. It will be supported with the factory-backed Ford warranty, so they’re giving the full five-year vehicle warranty on the ARB accessories,” described Matthew. “And it’s not just bull bars. Ford customers will be able to choose from an extensive range of ARB products, including rear-bars, canopies, and suspension upgrades. “This new arrangement with Ford has taken the ARB business to a new level, and it’s different from how they engage with all other vehicle manufacturers. “In the past, customers could order ARB products having them dealer fitted prior to delivery, and included in their new car finance package, but the products weren’t backed by the factory warranty. ARB’s warranty backed them. “This is a huge market shift for ARB and will change the way we engage with other vehicle manufacturers moving forward.” Of course, as a significant player in the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Industry, ARB has been a long-time supporter of the AAAA. “The AAAA provides the aftermarket industry with a unified voice,” said Matthew. “Obviously, we have got competitors in the industry who are also members of the association, but at the end of the day, we all need a healthy aftermarket industry for us all to survive and ultimately thrive. “The AAAA has done a fabulous job over the years in lobbying federal and state governments to make sure that when they make policies, that they hear every side of the story. “We’ve always been a powerful advocate for the AAAA, and we’ll continue to support their endeavors for decades to come.” To find out more about ARB, visit arb.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

NEW TOUGH DOG LEAF SPRINGS The leaf springs are designed for the 4x2 N80 Hilux The Toyota 4x2 N80 Hilux has developed a reputation for being a tough and reliable truck. This workhorse appears to be up to even the most demanding task. Its owners may load up the bed with any number of items like machinery, heavy tools, canopies, or anything else that needs to get from here to there. However, Tough Dog suspension states that for the most part OEM suspension components are not designed with the goal of maintaining comfort under load. It says OEM leaf springs are not usually rated for heavy loads and as a result, the rear of the vehicle will drop, which will negatively affect the breaking and handling of the vehicle. Tough Dog Suspension further explains that ride comfort is also affected, as the OEM shock valving is likely not able to effectively control the spring under heavy loads.

To address this problem, Tough Dog says it has developed a new range of standard height heavyduty 0-1000kg leaf springs that pair with its award-winning twin tube 41mm foam cell shocks to improve the suspension of the 4x2 Hilux. Once combined with supplied bushes and U-bolts, Tough Dog says the upgrade will assist with load carrying applications while maintaining a high standard of comfort and driveability. Tough Dog aims to help owners get the most out of its 4x2 Hilux without compromising safety. It says that it recognises that a one size fits all mentality just won’t cut it when it comes to suspension components. Top Dog offers a four-year unlimited kilometre warranty for recreational use. It also provides a three-year unlimited kilometre warranty for fleet and commercial use, giving its customers some additional peace of mind. THE IMPORTANCE OF STEERING AND WHEEL ALIGNMENT JAX Tyres and Auto says the trade has a big role to play in educating consumers While Australian drivers are becoming more familiar with identifying vehicle issues, industry professionals have a huge role in ensuring this awareness is translated into action to encourage safety and peace of mind. Findings from the JAX Tyres and Auto Road Safety Report 2021 showed that despite a nine percentage point increase from 2020, only 40 percent of Aussie drivers take their car for a check-up every six months and just over half (54 percent) say they carry out specific checks before a long drive. One necessary maintenance procedure that only trained technicians can provide is a wheel alignment. Misaligned wheels can cause issues with fuel efficiency, increased tyre wear, and impact on safety and handling. It may seem trivial but improper handling could cause serious safety risks if drivers need to make

an emergency manoeuvre and their car doesn’t respond accordingly. The correct settings for wheel alignment are very precise so there’s a noticeable difference in the feel and function of a car. Here are the symptoms that mechanics encourage people to look out for: • The car pulls to one side • Tyres are worn excessively or unevenly • The steering wheel is not centred when driving straight • Squealing tyres or unusual sounds when driving Concerningly, JAX Tyres and Auto’s recent study also found 39 percent of Australians claimed that even if their car drove fine, an unidentified noise wouldn’t prevent them from going on a long road trip. Only 50 percent of respondents take the right precautions by checking their tyre health at least once a month. Beyond conducting a wheel alignment during

regular servicing, JAX Tyres and Auto encourages members of the trade to have a conversation and encourage customers to consider it when they get new tyres, replace a part of their steering or suspension or experience a sudden jolt or accident while on the road. JAX Tyres and Auto says its industry expertise means it is best placed to help these drivers to take action when noticing bad wheel alignment symptoms. These actions are essential for safety and peace of mind, both for the driver and others on the road. To discuss the importance and benefits of wheel alignment with qualified technicians, JAX Tyres and Auto encourages you to contact its team via www.jax.com.au

TRACTION + ATTRACTION

The Eibach PRO KIT reportedly retains ride quality, improves suspension performance and achieves better aesthetics A big part of suspension performance is the appearance that comes with it. Fit a passenger vehicle with larger-diameter rims wrapped in lowerprofile tyres and the first thing you get is a greater gap between the tyre tread and wheel arch. Eibach says its Eibach PRO KIT, the most popular among numerous Eibach options, reduces that extra real estate by 25 to 35mm depending on make and model to transform it into a nice, sleek, lowered vehicle that is tastefully done – and not overdone. It says a popular analogy is this: when a motorist buys a sports model variant, it comes with sports suspension. The Eibach PRO KIT provides sports suspension to a vehicle that has not come from the factory with sports suspension. On the one hand, the spring system should be compliant and soft enough to compensate for bumpy roads or tracks. This compliance assures permanent road-contact of wheel and tyre and therefore guarantees grip and traction. On the other hand, the spring system must be firm enough to reduce body roll, squat and dive of the vehicle body during cornering, acceleration and braking. 70

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

Eibach says its revised spring rates lower the vehicle’s centre of gravity without sacrificing ride quality; improving the suspension performance and achieving “far better aesthetics.” The lower, more muscular, more athletic stance makes the recipient vehicle stand out from stock and in addition to the “no more wheelarch gap” appearance, Eibach says its owner will instantly notice the significant performanceoriented improvement in handling, braking and responsiveness. Retaining ride quality is particularly important here in Australia given our quality of driving surfaces in contrast to those more common in Europe. Eibach is engineered in and meets the strict criteria of Germany per TUV certification and works in close collaboration with vehicle manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi — plus premium tuning houses such as AMG and AC Schnitzer. In addition to the German brands, Eibach offers products for vehicles manufactured in North America, Asia, Australia and the other European countries. In contrast to so-called pop-up businesses here

in Australia which bring in their own suspension products from overseas, Eibach states it is a global brand with a rich history spanning more than 70 years. Eibach Australia is part of the Eibach Federn GmbH global group, providing local technical support for its products, and has direct access to all data files and drawings. Eibach says its springs are engineered and tested to work perfectly with original equipment shock absorbers and come with a five-year warranty for faulty workmanship. Workshops, tyre dealerships, and car and SUV servicing centres are encouraged to contact Eibach Australia directly with trade enquiries. BORGESON’S COMPLETE STEERING SELECTION The brand has been in operation since 1914 and continues to grow

For more than 100 years, Borgeson has been manufacturing steering universal joints for the industrial, automotive, military, and aerospace industries. The brand’s original needle bearing U-joint has been refined over time, and Borgeson says it is the strongest joint available for high performance automotive applications. In 2001, Borgeson expanded its range of steering components by acquiring Mullins steering gears. Today, the brand has an expansive inventory that includes steering boxes, columns, shafts and bearings. It also has a complete selection of power steering parts, including power steering pumps, reservoirs, brackets, pulleys, and complete conversion kits. Borgeson says that its steering components are ideal for all types of upgrade or custom-built street or race vehicles. These components make it possible to customise the steering for a vehicle to come through or around headers and chassis rails. The brand’s portfolio includes single and double U-joints, vibration reducers and rag joints, steering

shafts, support bearings, couplers and adapters, pin and block racing u-joints, column drops, and floor mounts. Borgeson recommends using only needle bearing U-joints on street vehicles. The brand says they last much longer, outlasting non-needle bearing joints by a factor of 10 to one.

Any of its four Double D (a round shaft with two flats) sizes, 14 different spline size yokes, and the ‘94 and later Mustang V style can be combined to mate components from many different manufacturers.

The brand’s U-joints are made of specially selected steel and stainless steel for strength and longevity, and they are machined in Borgeson’s factory on state-of-the-art CNC equipment.

Borgeson also offers two telescoping shaft assemblies in 24” and 36” overall lengths, 3/4” double D shafts in steel and stainless steel, vibration reducers made with urethane, and splined shafts in steel, stainless steel and polished stainless steel.

It says the sealed precision needle bearings never require maintenance, stating that the needle bearing joints have zero backlash (radial play), providing for more precise steering and a better feel for the road.

MASERATI USES BILSTEIN

The Maserati MC20 supercar uses Bilstein DampTronic X technology Innovation, passion and uniqueness are the guiding values that Maserati has adopted as part of its strategic renewal. The Maserati MC20 is representative of the new era of Maserati – ravishingly beautiful and fast-asan-arrow; a true technological jewel that combines craftsmanship and engineering, elegance and performance. The 630hp twin-turbo V6 engine is the first to be produced by Maserati after a hiatus of more than 20 years. With a kerb weight of less than 1,500 kilograms, the Italian super sports car is also an extremely lightweight vehicle that boasts the best power-toweight ratio in its class at just 2.33 kg/hp. Maserati is also particularly proud of its sophisticated aerodynamics. The right state-of-the-art suspension was needed for this much potential and that’s where Bilstein says it came in.

The MC20 has been fitted with a suspension featuring the Bilstein DampTronic X system. This latest technology from Bilstein is said to be a perfect match for the requirements profile of Maserati’s developers. Bilstein explains that the high adjustment dynamics of the Bilstein DampTronic X shock absorber enable the required damping forces to be adapted in just a few milliseconds to the damping requirements determined by the central control unit. Further, the control concept calculates and adjusts the damping several hundred times per second, depending on the driving situation and wheel selectivity. This allows the agility as well as the ride comfort and safety to be increased. The Bilstein plant in Mandern produced the prototype dampers for the first road test in July 2020. Bilstein says the pressing question was is the first theoretical characteristic design heading in the right direction and states the redeeming answer is yes, with the first set of shock absorbers already working amazingly well in the MC20. “We met expectations right from the start,” Bilstein Technical Project Manager, Marc-Raphael Stratmann, said. “The performance in terms of both handling and comfort was already at a good level. At the

following road test in Nardo a few weeks later, we were already able to fine-tune it.” As a result, the project team was able to perfect the system together with Maserati, making it ready for production. “Our DampTronic X system works perfectly in the car,” Marc-Raphael said. “It is a very good system that offers a wide spread between comfort and taut sporty tuning. “We have the only inboard system on the market that works with pilot-operated pressure relief valves in both the rebound and compression stages. The excellent control combined with very high dynamics is impressive.” Marc-Raphael looks back on the project with pride. “It was a very, very open, fair, almost friendly collaboration with Maserati, and I’m still totally impressed by it.” “It is spectacular what we have achieved with our great team together with Maserati, despite the challenging conditions.” For more information, visit www.bilstein.com

CORGHI EXPANDS RANGE The range of PROADAS solutions at Corghi has grown Corghi – which says it is renowned the world over for innovation, quality and precision – has recently announced that it will expand its product range with the launch of the new PROADAS START equipment. PROADAS is a universal modular system developed for the verification and calibration of driver assistance systems or front sensors, the verification of the alignment status and the complete wheel alignment service on multi-brand cars and commercial vehicles. The system allows the calibration of front sensors, including Camera, Radar and Lidar. “Our new PROADAS START offering is specifically designed for all those who want to get to know the ADAS world through an easy-to-use solution, as all the key features of the RS configuration are included,” Corghi Australia General Manager, Andrew Cornwell, said. “Special grips enable accurate system positioning, 76

while information provided by the integrated wireless devices make it all really intuitive to operate.” Corghi’s new PROADAS START includes an integrated patented software system that controls positioning in real time. It can also be upgraded to PROADAS RS configuration to include Toe Control and Wheel Aligner Service. “PROADAS is compatible with most of the wheel aligners produced by Nexion Group,” Andrew said. “Using the cameras or the CCD sensors on the wheel aligner, it is possible to align the PROADAS system with the vehicle to be calibrated.” When the alignment is complete, the software checks for the presence of ADAS sensors and transfers any data on the vehicle to the PROADAS software over Wi-Fi. “This avoids increases productivity by saving the operator from having to select the vehicle again in the database,” Andrew said.

In addition to PROADAS START, Corghi has launched the new SCE 700 equipment for the calibration of ADAS sensors, AVM Cameras (360°), Rear Camera and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) radar sensors on VAG Group vehicles. “With the PROADAS software it is possible to check the system alignment status, thus making the positioning process easy, accurate and fast,” Andrew said. STEERING TIPS FROM ZF AFTERMARKET

Suspension and steering parts must be checked regularly, as they play a decisive role in the safe handling of a car The experts at ZF Aftermarket have shared some useful tips when it comes to inspecting, diagnosing and replacing common steering and suspension components.

Strut Mounts The top fastening of the suspension strut is attached to the chassis via the strut mount. As the strut mount must have both a damping force and a rotatable mounting for unhindered steering resetting, there are strict requirements for its function and wear resistance. A worn or defective strut mount can be recognised by various symptoms, including: • Squeaking during spring movements of the chassis • Poor cornering • Crackling noises during steering wheel movements • Restricted resetting of the steering after cornering • Knocking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces If the suspension strut mount has been checked and a defect has been detected, ZF Aftermarket recommends that it should be replaced as follows: 1. Remove the wheels. 2. Remove the suspension strut and clamp it in an appropriate fixture. 3. Compress the suspension spring using a spring tensioner until it is released from the seat of the suspension strut mount 4. Remove the nut on the damper connecting rod. 5. Position the new strut mount in its installation position. In doing so, check that the lower part of the mount is seated correctly on the suspension spring. 6. Fit the bolts and fastening components and tighten the lock nuts to the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. 7. Carefully release the spring tensioner. In the process, continue to check that the suspension spring is placed on the strut mount and on the suspension strut plate correctly. 8. Refit the suspension strut in the vehicle. 9. Refit the wheels and perform a full wheel alignment. Finally carry out a test drive.

TIP: Like other chassis components, suspension strut mounts should always be replaced in pairs.

Control Arms Control arms are installed as pairs on the front and rear axle, connecting the chassis to the wheels. A defective control arm can manifest in the following ways: • Noise (squeaking, creaking, rumbling) • Deteriorating drivability • Increasingly woolly and imprecise steering • Uneven tyre wear The exact steps are set by the relevant vehicle manufacturer, with the below steps from ZF Aftermarket a guide for workshops to follow: 1. Lift the vehicle using a car lift, which makes it easier to correctly tighten the control arm fixing screws. TIP: Depending on the axle design, the control arm may need to be secured against falling with a suitable device, eg. a transmission lifter. 2. Treat the fixing screws and nuts of the control arm with rust solvent for a few minutes to loosen the components. 3. On vehicles with automotive headlight levelling, it may be necessary to detach the levelling sensor from the control arm. 4. If the stabiliser is connected to the control arm, loosen and remove the corresponding stabiliser fixing screws. 5. Loosen and remove the control arm fixing screws. 6. Loosen the ball joint at the steering knuckle with a suitable tool, such as a puller. 7. Remove the old control arm. 8. Clean the mounting flange of the ball joint on the steering knuckle with sandpaper and then brake cleaner. This is to prevent single rust particles entering the new control arm joint via the ball pin, potentially leading to premature failure of the joint. 9. Fit the new control arm with the supplied accessories and attach new fixing screws and nuts. 10. Reattach the stabiliser and, if applicable, the levelling senor for the headlight levelling to the control arm.

11. Lower the vehicle until the suspension is compressed. 12. Tighten the fixing screws with the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. 13. Lower the vehicle entirely. 14. Measure the chassis and adjust if necessary. 15. Check and, if necessary, adjust the headlight settings on vehicles with automotive headlight levelling where the levelling sensor is attached to the control arm. 16. To conclude, test-drive the vehicle. TIP: If the control arm is in working order, it is possible to only replace the defective bearings and joints; however, replacing bearings, bushings and ball joints can be complex and costly. Replacing the entire arm is generally safer and often less expensive.

HYDRAULIC POWER STEERING VS ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) Where is the Automotive repair industry heading to service power steering into the future? Power Steering Parts of Australia explains that hydraulic steering will still be around for many years but the type of EPS units in most modern vehicles can only be repaired by an experienced specialist Power Steering workshop as opposed to a general mechanical workshop. The tools to do these overhauls are not cheap and if you try to repair a unit without these tools, Power Steering Parts of Australia warns that you have a high probability of damaging the housing and then you will need to buy a complete new unit as a housing on its own is generally not sold separately by most OE manufacturers. “Years ago, when the VT Commodore and AU Falcon were popular, the power steering units were

being repaired as often as McDonalds sold a Big Mac burger and virtually anyone with a spanner and a screwdriver could repair the them, but this is not the case anymore,” Power Steering Parts of Australia Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Peter McMahon, said. “Just to replace an inner seal means you may have to cut the piston from the rack shaft without damaging it and then correctly line up and roll in place a new piston,” “Rarely have we seen anyone get this right on the first and sometimes multiple repairs. This becomes very expensive especially when you quote before you start. Add to this the cost of R&R each time and you will well and truly be in the red. “With the EPS units it will be many years before many of the experienced specialists are even able to completely repair/service these vehicles. There are a few dedicated specialists working in this field now. “You now need to be not only a Power steering specialist but also an auto electrician as well. The diagnosis will take time that is an expense only to find that you may have to replace the complete electric motor driving the steering unit. “In some cases, if you remove the steering unit

assembly and do any work on it you will have to repair it with the vehicle’s computer. Generally, only the dealers have the computer programs to do this. Some scan tools can be of some help. “The previous popular sourcing of exchange hydraulic units will not be the same for EPS units. This will not happen for many years as core units are not making any appearances in volumes to make this happen. “Again, putting a unit into another vehicle will in most cases need them to be re-paired with the computer. Not all are suitable to accept this. “Some equipment is now available to reprogram the EPS unit before it is re-installed but the cost of suitable equipment is now well above $30k plus ongoing computer program support costs to suit specific vehicles.” For more from Power Steering Parts of Australia, please visit www.pspa.com.au

BAPCOR SHINES LIGHT ON ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY The company’s environmental, social and governance strategy is a driver of its success

Australia and the Asia Pacific’s largest automotive aftermarket specialist company, BAPCOR Limited, has spent three years developing and actioning its four pillar Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy. This detailed BAPCOR ESG strategy and its related action plans outline the Australian company’s solid commitment to corporate responsibility and highly effective governance throughout all of its automotive aftermarket industry operations across Australia, New Zealand and in Thailand. The importance placed by BAPCOR in the implementation of a world class ESG strategy saw the Australian company join the United Nations Global Compact in early 2020, ensuring that all facets of its ESG strategy are aligned directly to the highest global standards of corporate, social and environmental responsibility. One of the four pillars of BAPCOR’s ESG strategy is the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The Australian company has implemented a number of decisive and effective actions to ensure that the carbon emissions created by its operations are more than offset through a number of initiatives.

This environmental commitment is further enhanced by using 100 percent Recyclable Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cardboard cartons for Penrite’s 1L, 2.5L, 4L, 5L and 6L product ranges. The FSC Certification assures that Penrite’s cardboard cartons are made with, or contains, forest-based materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC controlled wood. Penrite says its award-winning ENVIRO BOX, a bag-in-a-box concept for packaging and dispensing lubricant, is another example of its commitment to environmentally conscious packaging. The introduction of the ENVIRO BOX has reportedly meant a reduction in the number of 20 litre HDPE packs that Penrite is putting into the landfill waste. Penrite says it strives to minimise any environmental impact by reducing emissions and developing safe and sustainable, production, packaging, storage and distribution methodologies. The carbon emissions generated by more than 1,000 Burson Auto Parts delivery vehicles used across the entire nationwide store network are offset by the company’s integral involvement with Greenfleet. In less than two years, more than 40,000 trees have been planted across the country, with all Burson Auto Parts delivery vehicles displaying signage advising that each vehicle’s carbon emissions are offset by the Greenfleet tree planting program. BAPCOR staff are also directly involved in this strategy by taking part in tree planting days, further enforcing the importance that BAPCOR places in its commitment to environmental sustainability at both local and national levels. In addition to the Greenfleet carbon offset program, all Burson Auto Parts store lighting is in the process of being modernised to LED lighting to conserve energy.

immediate and long-term energy savings generated by this highly responsible BAPCOR environmental sustainability initiative are more than significant. Additionally, BAPCOR says it is committed to reducing waste and increasing recycling activity. To achieve this important ESG strategy goal, the company has formed an alliance with Wasteflex, an organisation that assists BAPCOR by reducing the amount of waste that would normally be sent to landfill by optimising waste recycling. Other pillars of BAPCOR’s ESG strategy include ensuring the company’s many thousands of automotive aftermarket products are sourced from highly ethical suppliers; strong, highly effective and responsible corporate governance; and the company’s local community support across its entire footprint of over 1,100 stores, wholesale operations and automotive service centres across Australia, New Zealand and Thailand. According to BAPCOR Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Darryl Abotomey, the establishment and actioning of BAPCOR’s detailed ESG strategy has been a highly rewarding process. “The time and resources that we have committed to establishing and effectively actioning BAPCOR’s ESG strategy have ensured highly positive changes to the way we view and understand our environmental, social and governance responsibilities,” Darryl said. “We have encouraged ownership of these responsibilities across our entire company to ensure that each pillar of our ESG strategy is clearly understood and actioned by our hardworking team members.

INTO THE FUTURE

Bosch believes AioT, electromobility and green hydrogen are the way forward Technology and Services supplier, Bosch, is combining the internet of things (IoT) with artificial intelligence (AI) and believes electromobility will allow it to develop new business opportunities on the back of the profound technological and ecological changes currently occurring. “Bosch came through the first year of the coronavirus pandemic well,” said Dr Volkmar Denner, the Chairman of the Board of Management of Robert Bosch GmbH, at the press conference to present the company’s 2020 annual report. “We are one of the winners in the transition to electromobility, and we are significantly expanding our software business by tying in artificial intelligence.” In powertrain technology, electromobility is establishing itself as Bosch’s core business. Dr Denner reported that the company is making heavy upfront investments in this area. Currently, Bosch sales revenue from electrical powertrain components is growing twice as fast as the market, at almost 40 percent. The aim is to increase annual sales fivefold by 2025 and to break even one year earlier. “Electromobility has long since ceased to be a bet on the future. Our upfront investments are now beginning to pay off,” Dr Denner said.

Hydrogen megatrend: fuel-cell market worth billions Bosch is also focusing on a growth market for the hydrogen megatrend: the company believes the market for green hydrogen in the EU will be worth

almost 40 billion euros by 2030 – with annual growth rates of 65 percent. Fuel cells convert hydrogen into electricity, and Bosch is developing both stationary and mobile fuel-cell solutions. From 2021 to 2024, Bosch plans to invest one billion euros in fuel-cell technology. “Bosch is already H2-ready,” Dr Denner said. “The plan is to put 100 stationary fuel-cell plants into operation this year. They will supply electricity to users such as data centers, industrial manufacturers, and residential areas.” Bosch estimates that the market for mobile fuelcell components will be worth around 18 billion euros by the end of the decade and Dr Denner believes Bosch is in a good position here. “We have what it takes to be a leader in this market as well.” Bosch recently entered into a joint venture with China’s Qingling Motor Group to produce fuel-cell powertrains. A test fleet of 70 trucks is set to be on the roads before the end of this year.

CO2 reduction at Bosch: along the entire value chain Bosch is pressing ahead with its own climate action targets as planned. Now that the climateneutral status of the Bosch Group, with its more than 400 locations worldwide, has been certified, Bosch is giving concrete shape to its plans for what is known as Scope 3. By 2030, it aims to reduce carbon emissions by 15 percent from its 2018 level along its entire value chain, from suppliers to customers – a reduction of 67 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. “Our efforts are sure to drive our product portfolio in the direction of energy efficiency or even technology change. In the future, a supplier’s or logistics provider’s carbon footprint will be one of the criteria for awarding new procurement contracts,” Dr Denner said. “In terms of mitigating global warming, this will pay off.” For more from Bosch, visit www.bosch.com.au

SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY FOR MODERN DAY VEHICLES Century says knowing what changes are happening in the industry is crucial for future-proofing any business With rising global pressures for companies to take action on climate change and reduce CO2 emissions, vehicle manufacturers have been investing heavily on the research and development of battery monitoring systems, Idle Stop Start, Hybrid, Electric and Hydrogen vehicle technologies.

replace an Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) with an EFB and Absorbed Glass Mat Battery (AGM) with an AGM Stop Start Battery.

Battery technology is constantly developing and changing at an astounding rate and stop start technology is no different, with a large number of vehicle manufacturers adopting stop start technology to improve vehicle fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions to satisfy global carbon emission targets.

Century says its ISS Active and Hybrid battery range represents the latest in performance for vehicles with stop start or Micro Hybrid technology. It explains they are specially designed to meet or exceed the requirement of vehicles fitted with Idle Stop Start systems, providing fuel saving and reduced emission benefits.

“Vehicles fitted with Idle Stop Start systems place unique demands on the battery and conventional batteries should not be used. In a conventional system the battery operates in a close to full state of charge, and starts the vehicle only a few times a day,” Century’s Australasia Marketing Manager, Andrew Bottoms, said. “In contrast Idle Stop Start batteries are often in a partial state of charge due to the multiple starts the vehicle endures during a journey and the charging duration in between engine on off modes. As such stop start batteries are designed to handle increased cycling and recharge faster and more efficiently. “With a conventional system, the engine starts approximately 750 times a year. In comparison, in a vehicle with an ISS system, the engine may have to start every one to two kilometres or roughly 17,500 times a year, so you can see the importance of using a battery that has been designed to handle these requirements. “Fitting a conventional battery in an ISS vehicle could potentially damage the electrical system and lead to early battery failure. With this in mind, when replacing a battery in an ISS vehicle it is vital that you use a like for like replacement – only

“The number of vehicles being introduced into the market place with ISS technology is still growing rapidly and we don’t foresee this trend slowing down anytime soon.”

Century ISS Active AGM and EFB batteries incorporate innovative design features and are built from the finest raw materials to deliver superior cycling performance, rapid recharging between repeated engine starts, and the extra power required to run your vehicle’s on-board electrics whilst the engine is stopped. The Century Hybrid Auxiliary battery range is also available for hybrid vehicles, with Century explaining this range provides superior cycling performance and dependable auxiliary power to run the vehicle’s on-board electrics and computer management systems. The range has been designed from the ground up with an improved micro-cycling ability to enable the battery to recharge faster.

Configuring battery management systems With the introduction of C02 production control systems including Idle Stop Start, it is essential that vehicles have a battery of the correct type and specification installed. More importantly, several automotive manufacturers have introduced active energy management systems that require the replacement battery to be correctly configured to the vehicle following installation. This configuration is required because a brandnew replacement battery requires a very different charging strategy compared to the battery which has reached the end of its serviceable life. Applying the old charging strategy to a new battery could result in a loss of Stop Start system functionality, loss of vehicle system functionality, plus increased fuel usage and C02 emissions. Century says the configuration of these vehicle energy management systems can now be carried out simply and easily using the Century Yu-Fit battery configurator tool. The Yu-Fit tool can be used to configure the replacement battery to the vehicle’s active energy management system – informing the vehicle that

a new battery of the correct type and performance has been installed. It will also inform the charging system of the new battery characteristics and ensure the correct charging strategy is applied right from the start. Century says configuring a vehicle with the YuFit tool following battery replacement will ensure the vehicle’s charging, energy management and system functionalities will perform as intended, and ensure your customer will receive the best possible performance from their battery purchase. The Century Yu-Fit tool comes pre-loaded with profiles for all common vehicle manufacturer make and models and receives regular updates to help keep pace with the latest changes to the Australian new car market – all by simply connecting the tool to your PC.

Don’t leave your customers stranded – test every battery In Australia, approximately 750,000 vehicles per year require a roadside battery replacement – and over 70 percent of these vehicles would have been in a service bay or retail outlet within the previous six months. Proactive battery testing using a handheld tester like the DHC BT521A from Century Yuasa provides an accurate on the spot test result in minutes. It can help identify suspect batteries before they fail and highlight problems with the vehicle’s starting and charging system. But more importantly, it helps your customers avoid the financial and emotional costs associated with a flat or faulty battery. INNOVATIVE E-ATV CONTRIBUTES TO SURVIVABILITY FOR THE ADF

The prototype was developed to meet strict requirements from the Australian Defence Force A world-leading electric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) prototype providing enhanced stealth and manoeuvrability benefits for defence personnel has been developed by Melbourne-based electric vehicle conversion expert, EVolution Australia. Featuring independent wheel drive with maximum torque from standstill via a unique and custom designed tri-motor drivetrain, the e-ATV prototype was developed to meet strict requirements, primarily reduced noise and heat signature to mitigate risk of discovery while in the field. Individually powered wheels also enable greater manoeuvrability and an improved opportunity for moving away from threats, even if one wheel has been damaged by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). EVolution Australia worked with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) to plan,

design and build the prototype vehicle, which Director, Russ Shepherd, said is an industryleading outcome. “The e-ATV has been a challenging and highly experimental project that fulfills the client brief of enhanced survivability, while providing insight into the decarbonisation and deployment of electric defence vehicles as the transition to low-emission transport gathers pace,” Russ said. As independent wheel drive was unachievable with current hub motor technology, so the EVolution team designed a bespoke drive system utilising latest e-mobility componentry, with the aim of improving design over time. “This was enormously challenging as this type of design doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. It’s been a completely unique process that adapts components and technology to a one-of-a-kind electric vehicle,” Russ said. EVolution General Manager, Jack Puzin, said establishing strong supplier relationships had been integral to the success of the e-ATV. “Due to the unique design, it’s been exciting to align ourselves with local partners who share our vision and jump completely on-board with the seemingly impossible, despite demanding timelines,” Jack said.

“In doing so, we preferenced Australian companies, but spoke to technology leaders all over the world to gather information. This enabled us to balance emobility technology with aesthetics and ergonomics, to deliver a driveable and fullyfunctional electric vehicle.” Interestingly for the EVolution team, the e-ATV used a mix of specialist skills and knowledge that move away from that of a traditional automotive mechanical workshop. “This future-focused project has highlighted to us the need to provide training and advice to the automotive sector, to prepare a new generation of e-mechanics,” Russ said. “We’re extremely proud of this rewarding outcome. The e-ATV is by far the coolest project we’ve worked on and we’re very grateful to the DSTG for partnering with our leading Australianowned conversion business in this exciting emerging sector.” For more information, visit www.evolutionaustralia.com.au

ZF INTRODUCES ENERGY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE This software offers higher energy efficiency and longer battery life for Electric Vehicles The global technology company ZF has developed a new Energy Management System (EMS) software for the commercial vehicle market. The ZF EMS can control all auxiliary units such as air compressors, steering pumps and thermal management while also coordinating the energy requirements of the driveline. ZF says its software can reduce energy consumption per kilometer, which increases the range and potentially extends the battery’s service life. In addition to greater efficiency, ZF says there are also benefits related to maintenance, diagnosis and reduced battery costs. “Only such an integrative approach makes it possible to further increase the efficiency of electric vehicles,” said Winfried Gründler, who

is responsible for E-Mobility in ZF‘s Commercial Vehicle Technology Division. “This illustrates the strategic importance that software expertise has for our Group strategy: Next Generation Mobility.” ZF currently offers the EMS ZF as an add-on to commercial vehicle electric drive systems already in volume production. ZF’s EMS also reportedly supports a faster launch to market of highly efficient all-electric commercial vehicles. ZF says that this software coordinates the correct start-up and availability and interaction of all components in the vehicle relevant for the flow of energy. This includes the battery’s state of charge, the

electric drive, and all auxiliary units such as the compressor, DC/DC converter and heating. If the charging state of the battery decreases during a long trip, the EMS is able to lower the energy requirement priority of the auxiliary units to extend the range. The EMS can also take over charging management at the depot. Additionally, the software simplifies diagnostics since it is constantly checking the functional status of all consumables. “With our system, we are targeting bus and truck manufacturers unable to develop their own EMS or want to use them differently,” Winfried said. “Fleet owners such as transport authorities also benefit when only one partner assumes overall responsibility for the energy management of a vehicle.” For more information, visit www.zf.com/au or call 1800 ZF SALES (1800 93 72537).

OUTSIDE THE COMFORT ZONE Steven Tokouzis, Senior Channel and New Products Manager at Apex Tool Group, has built a successful career in the automotive aftermarket by pushing himself outside his comfort zone Today, Steve is responsible for the continued success of GEARWRENCH in Australia. “GEARWRENCH is the fastest-growing brand of hand tools in the automotive aftermarket,” Steve said. “We only launched the brand in the Australian market ten years ago, so we’re still considered the new kid on the block.” During that time, GEARWRENCH has experienced constant double-digit growth, taking market share from the more established brands. “The real drive behind our market penetration is our vertically integrated manufacturing and our heavy investment in new product development,” Steve explained. “I believe we have the world’s best product development team. This allows us to bring new and innovative products to market fast.” Born and raised in Sydney, Steve’s career in the automotive aftermarket was kick-started when he applied to complete his school-mandated work experience program at the local K-Mart Tyre and Auto. “I’ve always been into cars, so I thought this would be a fun way to learn more about them,” Steve said. “I must have done something right because, at the end of my work experience placement, they offered me a casual job, and I jumped at the chance.” Initially, Steve spent his Saturdays fitting tyres and

helping out around the workshop, but it wasn’t long before he started his apprenticeship as a mechanic. “I left school in year ten and started my apprenticeship. Trade school was fantastic, and there was one teacher who gave us some very sound advice, he said that you don’t always need to be the best at something, you just need to be a good bloke with the right attitude and people will bend over backwards to help you out,” Steve remarked. “That’s always stuck with me throughout my career and made me realise the value of having a positive attitude.” Armed with that advice, Steve put his nose to the grindstone while keeping an eye out for opportunities to further his career. “I was a very comfortable job,” said Steve. “I enjoyed engaging with the customers and was good on the tools. To top it off, it was only about 10 minutes from home, but I wanted to push myself to do more, and when I was offered the role of assistant manager at another K-Mart Tyre and Auto Store, I grabbed it with both hands.” Steve’s new job saw his commute to work increase to almost an hour each way, but his effort was rewarded when he got the call to join the K-Mart Tyre and Auto head office team. “I ended up spending 18 years with Kmart Tyre and Auto,” Steve explained. After downing tools, Steve’s first role was in the

training department, where he was responsible for working with mechanics and store managers to hone their selling techniques, upskill them technically and delivering new safety initiatives. “My time in the training department was certainly an eye-opener,” Steve remarked. “I was travelling all over the country and engaging with guys coming from off the floor. “It allowed me the opportunity to develop my interpersonal and listening skills, which has proved invaluable as my career has continued to evolve.” After doing his time in the training department, Steve spent time in merchandising before securing the role of mechanical services manager. But after almost two decades with the business, he was ready for a new challenge. “I don’t regret one minute of the time I spent with K-Mart Tyre and Auto,” said Steve. “But when I was offered the role at GEARWRENCH, I knew it was time to challenge myself once again and push outside my comfort zone.” GEARWRNCH is a division of Apex Tool Group (ATG), one of the largest manufacturers of professional hand and power tools in the world, serving the industrial, vehicle service and assembly, aerospace, electronics, construction, and serious DIY markets. In addition to GEARWRENCH, ATG’s portfolio of brands includes SATA, Crescent, Cleco, and Weller. “ATG works collaboratively with distributors, retailers, and large customers across the globe to make sure end users have the tools they need to solve real-world problems,” Steve explained. “Our unique category management approach provides customers with end user data, market

research, and customer insight, which helps drive inventory, display and promotion decisions.” Of course, Steve’s time on the tools serves him well as he pushes to grow the GEARWRENCH brand in Australia. “There are currently more than 5,000 SKUs in the GEARWRENCH range,” Steve described. “But we’re not stopping there, our product roadmap is extensive, and we have a huge number of innovative projects in the pipeline.” Many of the new product innovations start with the end user, in this case, mechanics from around Australia. Steve’s extensive experience on the tools provides him with a unique insight into the challenges they face every day. “A big part of my job is to get out and talk to mechanics in their workshops,” said Steve.

“I work with them, and together we identify processes that slow down their work and develop products to help them become more efficient. “In the end, our tools are designed to help them get the cars out on time. It’s not just about increasing productivity and profitability. Our tools can make the difference between going home to your family on time or spending hours in the workshop.” While it’s a vast, global business, Apex Tools goes to great lengths to listen to customers, with its unique innovation incubation program designed to take on board this feedback and bring new products to market quickly. “The advantage of being a global business is that we’ve got strategic business units set up around the world, so we are drawing insights from multiple markets,” said Steve.

“We have a global innovation forum that meets once a month to identify new opportunities, and this, combined with our vertically integrated manufacturing capabilities, allows us to develop new products at a break-neck pace.” The monthly innovation forum Steve described includes a broad cross-section of members, including the Chief Executive Officer, representatives from the factories, engineers, industrial designers, and, of course, new product managers. “In these meetings, we gather all the end user feedback, identify new product opportunities and start the new product development process,” said Steve. On many occasions, Steve has taken prototypes, 3D mock-ups, or pre-production hot off the production line and shown them to his customers to glean their feedback. Steve is quick to recognise that a big part of his success is his ability to communicate and build rapport quickly, from the boardroom to the workshop floor. “I get a big kick out of sharing our new products with my customers before they have been released,” Steve remarked. “It shows them that we’re on this journey together, and I know they feel proud to have played a part in launching a new product globally.” When it comes to strengthening their relationships with end users, Steve and his team at GEARWRENCH find their AAAA membership delivers exceptional value. “The AAAA provides us with numerous opportunities to engage with end users,” said Steve. “We can speak with them at trade shows and at the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Expo, get new products into their hands, and share our new product concepts and ideas.” GEARWRENCH also runs a national campaign in the Australian Automotive Aftermarket magazine. “Every quarter, we insert our latest catalogue into the magazine,” said Steve. “We know it ends up on the tables of workshop break rooms right across Australia and that it gets read. It’s another avenue we use to great effect to communicate with our end users.” GEARWRENCH has also thrown its support behind the AIS, supplying tools and advice to help the AAAA secure the success of this enormous project. “There is no doubt that the AAAA delivers value of multiple levels,” said Steve. “They help us keep our finger on the pulse of industry trends and provide a direct link to our end users.” To find out more about GEARWRENCH, visit www.gearwrench.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

CONSUMER LAW

DEFAMATION LAW CHANGES

Changes to defamation law commenced for several States and Territories on and from 1 July 2021 Defamation legislation has been changed in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria. The changes in these States and Territory take effect on and from 1 July 2021 for publications published on and from 1 July 2021. For publications published before 1 July 2021, the defamation legislation in place before the changes will apply. Tasmania has just finalised consultation on the changes and it is anticipated that the proposed legislative amendments will soon be considered by the Tasmanian Parliament. There is no indication of when Western Australia and the Northern Territory will introduce an amendment bill to their respective parliaments to consider. If you have any questions on whether the changes apply to a particular publication, or if amendments have commenced in Tasmania, Western Australia, or the Northern Territory, please contact Industry Legal Group.

Who may make a defamation claim? The law of defamation is available only for natural persons, corporations with less than 10 employees that are not an associated entity of another corporation, and not-for-profit entities.

What are the changes? The key changes include: • a fourth element must be met, being that serious harm is caused to the complainant (see below under ‘What are the elements to prove defamation’, for details of serious harm); • legal proceedings may not be commenced until a concerns notice, setting particular

information, such as the defamatory imputations and the serious harm caused, is first provided to the publisher of the alleged defamatory publication; • changes in relation to available defences, including the deletion of the defence of triviality; • the single publication rule, meaning that where the defamatory meaning is the same for several publications, the one-year limitation period commences running from the date of first publication; • the one-year limitation period may be extended up to 56 days where a concerns notice is issued within 56 days of the end of the limitation period; and • a limitation is placed on the maximum amount of damages for non-economic loss.

What are the elements to prove defamation? A publication is defamatory if each of the following are established: 1. the publication has a defamatory meaning; 2. the person making the claim is identified as the object of the defamatory meaning; 3. the publication is published for a third party; and 4. the publication has caused serious harm, being: (a) for a person, the publication has caused, or is likely to cause, serious harm to the reputation of the person; or (b) for a corporation, the publication has caused, or is likely to cause, the corporation serious financial loss. A publication may carry a defamatory meaning if

for example, in the mind of an ordinary reasonable person (as a general community standard), it injures reputation through, ‘disparaging’ the person, causing others to ‘shun or avoid’ the person, or causing the person to be subject to ‘hatred, contempt or ridicule.’

How long do I have to make a claim? The limitation period for a defamation action runs for one year commencing from the date the publisher, or an associate of the publisher, first publishes the defamatory publication (however, where applicable, the limitation period may be extended by up to 56 days if a concerns notice is given before the limitation period expires or the court grants an extension). The date of publication is the date the publication is uploaded or sent to the recipient.

Takeaways The key takeaways are: • there are changes to the defamation legislation commencing on and from 1 July 2021 for the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria; and • changes to the defamation legislation for the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Western Australian have not yet commenced. HR

ANNUAL WAGE REVIEW 2021 The Fair Work Commission (FWC) announced a 2.5 percent increase to minimum wages following its 2020-2021 annual wage review (Decision) The commencement of the increase depends on which group the applicable award falls under and will apply from the first full pay period starting on or after: • Group 1 – 1 July 2021; • Group 2 – 1 September 2021; or • Group 3 – 1 November 2021. Most awards fall into Group 1 and will increase from 1 July 2021 including the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award (Vehicle Award), Clerks Private Sector Award (Clerks Award) and Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award. Group 2 includes the General Retail Industry Award 2020 and for Group 3 includes awards where exceptional circumstances justified delayed operative dates.

Vehicle Award Regarding the operative date for the Vehicle Award, it was stated in the Decision: We acknowledge that an operative date of 1 July 2021 will mean that businesses covered by the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 will face two minimum wage increases in a 6 month period. But those businesses also had the benefit of no increase in minimum wages between 1 July 2020 and 1 February 2021. Further, the timing issues is, of itself, not sufficient to warrant a finding of exceptional circumstances in light of the turnover data.

Award Employees If you are already paying your employees more than the minimum award rate, you may be able to

absorb the increase depending on the particular employment arrangements. Members can contact Employer Assist for updated pay guides and specific advice on whether absorbing an increase is possible based on individual circumstances.

Enterprise Agreements If a registered agreement applies to the workplace, you will need to ensure the minimum base rates in the agreement remain at least equal to the base award rates. If not, the agreement rates will need to be increased to at least match the base award rates.

Award Free Employees The new national minimum wage that will apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2021 will be $772.60 per week or $20.33 per hour. This constitutes an increase of $18.80 per week to the weekly rate or 49 cents per hour to the

hourly rate. The national minimum wage applies to employees who are not covered by an award or registered agreement.

Superannuation Also note, the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate increased to 10% on 1 July 2021.

Next Steps for Employers AAAA members can contact Employer Assist for updated Vehicle Award and Clerks Award pay guides. Alternatively, members can download a copy from aaaa.employerassist.com.au If you have not already done so, you should review your current wage arrangements with employees to determine whether the increase can be absorbed or if you need to budget for the increase. Now is a good opportunity to review existing employment contracts to ensure they are applicable to the current work arrangements and compliant. If you do not have existing employment contracts, Employer Assist recommends implementing them for all employees. Employer Assist can review existing employment contracts and provide members with advice on any amendments required or improvements that can be made. JAX TYRES AND AUTO LAUNCHES INDUSTRY-FIRST VIDEO VEHICLE CHECKS This remote customer service is now available for NSW and VIC customers JAX Tyres and Auto is one of Australia’s top tyre retailers and mechanical service providers. In 2020, JAX launched its Video Vehicle Checks service for its Melbourne customers facing Stage Four lockdowns, enabling these drivers to address vehicle maintenance concerns in a safe way. Now, JAX is expanding this industry-first program to NSW customers that would like to take advantage of remote video vehicle checks. JAX Video Vehicle Checks are now available across Victoria and New South Wales for customers who are taking health precautions, living with or near

vulnerable members of the community, facing stayat-home restrictions, or wanting a convenient initial vehicle check. This service is only a preliminary visual diagnosis of the vehicle and is not intended to be a substitute for a complete in-store vehicle examination by a qualified mechanic. “It’s certainly been a strange and stressful time in recent memory, so we understand that many of our customers are seeking support and surety on top of the ease and convenience that our core services provide,” JAX Tyres and Auto Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director, Steve Grossrieder, said. “The JAX Video Vehicle Checks combine the best capabilities of our digital platform and knowledge of our store teams, so all of our customers regardless of their circumstances can get the expert help they need.” JAX says that New South Wales and Victorian-based drivers can book and access JAX Video Vehicle checks via the webchat to SMS functionality on JAX Tyres and Auto’s website.

Customers will then be connected with a qualified JAX Tyres and Auto technician who will conduct remote visual inspections and provide one-on-one expert mechanical and tyre advice and information. “We are proud of the warm response and interest that the JAX Video Vehicle Checks received from Victorian customers in lockdown last year and from industry peers both in Australia and abroad,” Steve said. “Giving our customers peace of mind about vehicle maintenance, especially in the current environment, drives every business decision we make. “We remain committed to delivering high-quality, innovative and flexible retail services through new technologies and first-rate industry expertise within our franchise network.” To book a JAX Video Vehicle Check, visit www.jax.com.au

SERVICING EV BATTERIES Electric vehicle battery types

There are typically two batteries in an electric vehicle – a lead acid 12V accessory battery and a lithium-ion high voltage traction battery. While you are no doubt familiar with 12V batteries, isolating or handling the traction battery of an electric vehicle can be dangerous to those not familiar with these high voltage systems that are generally above 48V. When handling either type of battery for workshop servicing or wrecking, care should be taken to ensure the ignition is switched off, bearing in mind you won’t hear an engine running. Prior to attempting to isolate an EV traction battery, you should always review the manufacturer instructions and ensure you have appropriate high voltage-safe PPE, including fire resistant clothing and gloves to Australian Standards.

To avoid short-circuiting, insulated tools should also be used to handle the traction battery, and a multimeter is a vital tool to check voltages. One of the main risks when working with EVs is thermal runaway, particularly in vehicles that have been involved in an accident where the traction battery casing has been breached. Moving an EV around a workshop should be done with extra care, and it’s important to note that EVs should never be hoisted on a scissor lift that may impact or damage the traction battery. Ensuring you have the right safety measures in place is essential for anyone servicing EVs, so EVUp has helped develop a simple one-hour online course for mechanics through the EV Alliance at www.evalliancetraining.thinkific.com

Charging an electric vehicle in your workshop Providing a reliable charge to your customers will soon be an expectation, rather than a value add. Following the servicing of an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, a 7kW single phase or 22kW three phase portable charging unit that can be easily maneuvered around your workshop will be a valuable tool for your team. A portable unit removes the need to move EVs in and out of a fixed parking space and also avoids

92

stretched charging cords creating a trip hazard or a fire risk. The Melbourne-made AURIGA unit available through our website has been designed as a durable portable charger for exactly this purpose, and starts at $2900 per unit. EVUp can also help with public charging infrastructure that will attract EV drivers to your location and future proof your business as the transition to electric transport accelerates.

WHY YOU NEED AN ECU REMAP ON YOUR 4WD Diesel Performance Tune says there are four “irresistible” reasons why you need an ECU remap today ECU (Engine Control Unit) remaps are amongst the most popular upgrades for your 4WD experience in today’s market. ECU remapping is when your original 4WD’s computer software file is replaced. This vehicle remap replaces the standard manufacturer’s software in the ECU, overwriting it with new updated software which can be programmed to optimise your 4WD’s overall performance. Diesel Performance Tune believes that with the right tune and qualified technician, an ECU remap will take your 4WD to the next level for the following reasons.

Increased power and torque When you replace the default computer software with a fully customisable ECU remap file, Diesel Performance Tune says you remove the limitations which were set by the vehicle’s manufacturer. Diesel Performance Tune says its qualified tuner adjusts the parameters with new levels which suit your driving needs. When it comes to how much increase you can

expect, Diesel Performance Tune says every car is different and therefore the results will be different, but a power increase between 25 to 35 percent is quite common – although the team does state it sees some vehicles with “huge” increases between 40 and 60 percent.

Better fuel efficiency With the correct tuning, the engine can achieve more power with less throttle, so your overall fuel economy could improve.

Improved overall performance With an ECU remap, Diesel Performance Tune says your 4WD drivability will improve significantly in all aspects from accelerating, cruising, towing, braking and all off-road driving.

Tailored and customised to your 4WD needs Diesel Performance Tune knows you didn’t buy a 4WD just to do one thing, and so its qualified tuner will customise your tune to suit your exact needs. Diesel Performance Tune also states something to consider before you opt for a cheap tune is the

fact that unfortunately, like any updates on your mobile phone, not all of them improve it. Diesel Performance Tune says ECU remapping also works this way and not every person who can offer you an ECU remap will necessarily update your files for the better. Because of this, Diesel Performance Tune says it is extremely important you have someone with experience and the right equipment carry out your ECU remapping. Diesel Performance Tune says its qualified technicians only use the best equipment including the latest Dyno Dynamics 4WD Dyno and Alientech tuning equipment and have extensive training to ensure “100 percent customer satisfaction.” For more information, call 07 5527 7207 or visit www.dieselperformancetune.com.au

FORMER MECHANIC TURNS SNAP-ON FRANCHISEE Experienced mechanic and Snap-on Rookie of the Year, Max Hardy, tells us what it’s like to be a Snap-on franchisee. Snap-on is a leading developer and manufacturer of tool and equipment solutions providing premium tools for professional tool users across Australia that has a reputation for outstanding quality. It has a unique mobile franchise model that transports its impressive tool range direct from workshop to workshop, customer to customer, day in, day out. Snap-on began in 1920 and says today it is one of the longest-running, most successful franchises in the world. Getting involved is simple and satisfying for anyone wanting their own business, it says, noting that it is never too late to give it a go. Max Hardy is someone that made the jump from employed mechanic to a driven Snap-on franchisee, and he’s reaping the benefits.

“The advantage with Snap-on is that there is a lot of training, guidance and support from the very beginning,” Max said.

Having spent 12 years as a mechanic, Max started his own Brisbane-based Snap-on franchise 14 months ago, and with hard work his business grew rapidly. In fact, his efforts saw him recognised as Snap-on’s Rookie of the Year at its annual conference.

“The support from head-office is really impressive, whether it’s IT, advertising, purchasing, technical backup or marketing, they’re multi-faceted in their approach and support. When you think of what we all went through in 2020, Snap-on never left my side, and we were able to keep operating.

“I was getting bored doing what I was doing as a mechanic, but I didn’t really know anything else,” Max said. “My experience with Snap-on started during my apprenticeship, my boss introduced me to Snap-on products. So, when the opportunity came up to join the Snap-on team as a franchisee, I thought it was perfect as I was still able to be around the industry without being directly in it.” With no business background, Max didn’t know where to start when it came to setting himself up, but he quickly realised the support from Snap-on was there whenever he needed it.

“The support from head-office was incredible. They are there to help you out, and knowing that they’re with you the whole way, fills you with confidence.” But it’s not just assistance from head-office that ensures success, says Max, who notes the support from the franchisee network is also invaluable. Snap-on explains that franchisees are there to give tips on products, demonstrations and advice on working with customers and it is the relationship with the customer that pays dividends. “I love it when a customer comes to me with a

problem and I can offer them a solution,” Max said. “Whether it be a new or existing customer, you build really close relationships with the customers through regular contact. “I meet people at their workplace, or their home, whatever works best for them. Dealing with people, communicating with them and showing them how you can help is extremely satisfying.” The advantage with owning a Snap-on franchise is the opportunities for growth and Max is already looking for an assistant, and plans to be a multifranchisee, running a second Snap-on truck as soon as he can. His advice for someone considering a Snap-on franchise is to talk to your local franchisee and to take the discovery tour. “They’ll explain all the methods and the advantages of having your own business, I wish I had done it sooner,” Max said. “Other than that, just give it a go. Get around people. Don’t stand back, grab the opportunity and make it yours. You won’t regret it for a second.” For Snap-on franchise opportunities, visit www.snaponfranchise.com.au

BURSON AUTO PARTS CONTINUES WA GROWTH New stores open in Geraldton and Bunbury

Australia’s Burson Auto Parts, a preferred supplier of parts, tools, equipment and accessories to the trade, has increased its regional automotive trade reach with two newly opened stores in Albany and Bunbury, joining the existing Geraldton store, making access to its range of quality service and replacement automotive parts easier for the regional automotive trade in Western Australia. Along with the regional stores, there is also a total of ten Perth metropolitan Burson Auto Parts stores located in close proximity to automotive repairers and service centres in Welshpool, Bibra Lake, Canningvale, Joondalup, Malaga, Mandurah, Midvale, Myaree, Osborne Park and Rockingham. To celebrate the opening of the Geraldton and Bunbury Burson Auto Parts stores, major trade nights were held that attracted hundreds of local trade customers. These events also saw the major prize draw of the special opening trade promotions for both of these regional Western Australian stores. Two John Papas Trailers filled with quality outdoor, camping and electronic products to the value of $8,000 were given away at these bumper events. In a major vote of confidence for the Perth automotive aftermarket industry and to provide even better service to local repairers, Burson Auto Parts has several more stores planned for metro and regional Western Australia. These new

stores will also create several exciting employment opportunities for local people seeking to start or continue to develop their automotive aftermarket industry careers. The Burson Auto Parts Welshpool store replaces the former Belmont store and is located adjacent to two BAPCOR Group warehouses providing this and all Perth stores with access to more than 10,000 square metres of Western Australian based stock. This directly translates to more Burson Auto Parts customers gaining immediate access to more parts, delivered on demand. Being actively involved within the local communities of each Burson Auto Parts store is an important part of the Australian company’s business philosophy. So, it made perfect sense that the company got behind one of Albany’s biggest and colourful motoring events. The Burson Auto Parts Albany Classic “Around the Houses” motor race event was held on June 5 and 6. Celebrating its 30th Anniversary, this historic race saw over 150 classic cars take part in front of more than 10,000 spectators. This popular local motorsport event aligned well with the many Burson Auto Parts’ 50th Anniversary celebrations taking place across the country during 2021. Burson Auto Parts also secured the naming rights sponsorship for the Western Australia based Australian Automotive Service Dealer Network

(AASDN) Annual General Meeting and Gala Dinner held on June 19 at the Crown Entertainment Complex. “The last six years since we opened our first Western Australia Burson Auto Parts store, to now having 13 and with more to come, has been, in typical Burson style, a truly whirlwind ride,” Burson Auto Parts Western Australia State Manager, John Wood, said. “In Western Australia we now employ around 100 full time team members with a fleet of more than 40 dedicated delivery vehicles that provide quick and efficient delivery of the biggest and best brands of automotive parts, tools and equipment. “I am looking forward to the next phase of our continued Western Australian growth in line with the growth of the entire Burson Auto Parts nationwide store network.” For more information, call 1300 BURSON (287 766) or visit www.burson.com.au

NEW FULCRUM SUSPENSION STORES The Fulcrum Suspensions team is springing into action and making tracks Fulcrum Suspensions has two new additions to the bricks and mortar side of the business. It explains that the first is the modern, exciting, and spacious new Capalaba workshop based in the Redlands on 30 Neumann Road, Capalaba. Fulcrum Capalaba’s Branch Manager, Michael Sargent, is a passionate 4X4 enthusiast and says the move came as it was purely time for them to expand their operations as they outgrew the workshop where they originally were. Fulcrum Capalaba’s customers also had to wait a gruelling five weeks on the regular due to book in times blowing out which they are hoping to reduce drastically in the next few weeks. The new Fulcrum Capalaba site is also a massive 500m2 larger than the old with hopes to employ more staff, implement additional lift bays and an extra wheel alignment bay which will help in reducing customer wait times. Fulcrum’s Retail and Franchise Operations

Manager, Alan Moon, states that Fulcrum Capalaba’s site is made for the future: from ease of deliveries of product, to storing product, to saving time operationally, it will take them a little while before they realise the full potential at the site. Fulcrum Suspensions says that you can have a digital tour of the new Capalaba workshop by visiting its YouTube page. The second addition is Fulcrum Suspensions’ new Sydney distribution centre (DC) that complements Fulcrum’s surrounding Eastern states (QLD and VIC) warehousing locations and provides the greater Sydney area readily available suspension products. Fulcrum’s new Sydney DC is located on 41 Huntingwood Drive, Huntingwood, which is only five minutes away from the old DC location. The new Sydney DC is said to be a huge and innovative facility that boasts more than 1500m2 of space, meaning they can carry more suspension goods for better supply.

Fulcrum Suspensions says its main aim is to provide improved availability, service and ongoing support to dealers, partners and more in New South Wales. Upon moving its Sydney DC, Fulcrum states that nothing has changed in terms of its team providing exceptional service and delivering the same fast driver delivery with the continuation of stocking leading suspension brands. These brands include Formula 4x4, SuperPro, Whiteline, Bilstein, Airbag Man, Raw 4x4, King Springs and much more. HSP PREMIUM RANGE OF HARD LIDS For Isuzu and Mazda third generation vehicles

HSP says it has taken a proactive approach to ensure it is first to market on almost every aftermarket offering of 2021 and says it has even been quicker than some of the genuine offerings. “For years we have had the philosophy that if you do it all internally you have maximum control, and that’s not just in terms of the sectors within our business, but in terms of where your business is located,” HSP Sales Director, Massih Aimaq, said. “We have always been a big believer in building in Australia and with all the negatives of COVID19, the silver lining for us was that we didn’t have delays due to extended shipping time or multicountry lockdowns.” HSP says it was the first to release the Silverback, Tail Lock, Tail Assist Load slide and Roll R Cover on the Mazda/D-Max in the third quarter of 2020 and has now finished its range with the Premium Lid. The HSP premium lid has three variations for the D-Max which consist of a one- and three-piece dual cab lid and a one-piece space cab lid. The Mazda Bt50 has two variations which consist of a one- and three-piece lid to suit the dual cab.

HSP says its Premium range of lids is one of the most popular hardcovers in Australia and boasts a range of features such as carpet interior, quick release hinges/struts, deep channels for water protection, a vehicle-specific shape to suit the vehicle and of course the integrated locking and light option. The covers are officially available via HSP, your closest HSP authorised distributor or any vehicle dealership and due to being locally manufactured, reportedly only require one to two weeks from time of order to being fitted on your vehicle. HSP is looking for more distributors to join its family nationally. For more information visit www.hsputelids.com or email info@hsputelids.com

SIZE DOES MATTER

At least it does when you are talking exhausts

Tuff says it is looking forward to new models from Ford and GM in the coming months, along with new SUVs from Toyota, in the form of the Toyota Landcruiser 300 Series and RAV4 Edge. Tuff General Manager Mark Casey said demand for 4x4 products was very strong despite the current shortage of vehicles and long waiting list for popular models. “We now have a stronger demand for Australianmade products and our Aussie manufacturers are going well, aside from labour shortages, lockdowns and steep material increases,” Mark said. “We see a strong future for Australian made 4x4 accessories and Tuff has made significant investments in recruiting additional staff and engineers to join our research and development team. “We have also purchased adjoining properties to expand our manufacturing facility based in Toowoomba, Queensland. “Tuff provides many options with bullbars, trays and canopies and there is a clear trend towards accessories that stand out from the crowd and have some form of personalisation.” For more information, visit www.tuffaustralia.com.au 96

Upgrading your vehicle’s exhaust to an aftermarket system has always been one of the easiest modifications you can do to a 4WD. Sinister Offroad says that historically, by bolting on a turbo back exhaust, you could instantly have more power and torque and better throttle response. However, Sinister Offroad explains that since 2016, all new diesel vehicles sold in Australia have Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) installed in the exhaust system as part of the emissions system and so bolting on a turbo back exhaust is no longer an option. It says while a DPF does a good job at trapping soot particles which is great for the environment, it also kills any exhaust note. As you can’t legally remove a DPF, Sinister Offroad says that when installing a DPF Back Exhaust, bigger is better. The team at Sinister Offroad has recently released a range of aftermarket exhausts, aptly named Sinister Exhausts, which includes a comprehensive list of three-inch systems for older 4WDs, as well as 3.5-inch systems designed specifically for DPF equipped 4WDs. “You might be thinking a 3.5-inch exhaust is overkill for a four-cylinder diesel engine and you’d

be right if it wasn’t for the DPF,” Sinister Offroad Chief Executive Officer, Jeff Jones, said. “By going 3.5-inch straight off the back of the DPF, we are attempting to amplify the exhaust note. “Most vehicles have also shown some minor performance gains, as well as drops in Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) which is great for towing. “Not content with only 3.5-inch systems for the V8 Landcruisers, four-inch Sinister Exhausts are in the pipeline.” Sinister Exhausts are designed and manufactured in Australia from 409 grade stainless steel and are “built tuff for harsh Aussie conditions.” For more information, contact Jeff Jones on 0431 978 177 or visit www.sinisteroffroad.com.au/sinister-exhaust

TERRAIN TAMER AND MULTIDRIVE TECHNOLOGY PAIR UP The new range of GVM upgrades from the pair are geared towards popular 4WD models The Gross Vehicle Mass, or GVM, is a rating that refers to the legal maximum weight of a vehicle. This rating is determined by the vehicle’s original manufacturer. It applies to the wheels and everything that sits on top of them. This means it includes the weight of the vehicle, winches, bull bars, fuel, people, and anything else that might be loaded into the vehicle. The GVM also determines the imparted Tow Ball Mass when towing and the Rated Axle Capacity, which is a limit set for how much weight should be distributed to each axle. It seems that with 4WD models in particular the GVM and axle load can be pushed to the limit. These types of vehicles are often used for towing or are loaded down with essential off-road gear or other items. Terrain Tamer has partnered with Multidrive Technology to create a range of vehicle specific GVM upgrades for popular 4WD models. The kits that these two companies have developed include exclusive Terrain Tamer suspension components. The kits are all thoroughly tested by Multidrive Technology to reach Secondary Stage Manufacturers approval. They can either be installed prior to registration or on existing registered vehicles at approved workshops. Users must follow state level modification processes. The first kits the companies have released are for Toyota 200, 79, 78 and 76 Series Landcruiser models, as well as the Hilux GUN and KUN 125/126 models, and more kits are currently in the development process.

Terrain Tamer says the 200 Series upgrade kit increases the original manufacturer’s GVM rating by over 10 percent from 3350kg to 3700kg, including an increase of 200kg to the rear axle capacity, from 1950kg to 2150kg. There are also two kit options available for the GVM upgrade of the 79 Series Landcruiser. These enable an increase from the original rating of 3300kg (dual cab) to either 3780kg or 3950kg. Terrain Tamer says all kits have been independently assessed to increase the front axle rating to 1540kg. The heavier rated kit also adds an extra 140kg to the rear axle, which boosts the rating to 2440kg. Terrain Tamer and Multidrive Technology’s GVM upgrades for Landcruiser are now available. LS rocker arms

Comp Cams’s Max-Lift BSR Shaft Rocker System is a bolt-in bushed shaft rocker system designed to combat fatigued LS rocker arms. “The BSR system can be beneficial at all performance levels. The increased system stiffness will help get the most of your rocker arm and camshaft while the superior durability of the bushings will ensure a long life of the product,” Comp Camps Mechanical Group Manager, Chris Potter, said. “We designed the BSR system to provide the best valvetrain stability and durability within a reasonably priced package. The BSR system increases the stiffness of the valvetrain package by tying all the rockers together, helping to eliminate the flexing of individual rockers. “This is especially beneficial on the LS3 and LS7 offset rocker arms. It allows us to maintain the proper contact geometry between the rocker pad and the valve tip, especially at higher spring loads and lifts. The use of a tri-layer bushing also increases the system stiffness while eliminating moving parts by removing needle bearings from the rocker arms. “The size of the camshaft is really irrelevant. The current BSR is lift limited due only to contact

patch of the GM rocker arm geometry. The BSR allows us to safely run .675-inches of lift on the LS1 and LS3. We’ve run .700-inches of lift on the LS7 with the stock lash cap repeatedly without fear of tearing up the valve tip or rocker pad. “Generally, we don’t recommend over 550-pounds open load on the stock-style rocker arm. As you’ll hopefully see in the future, the shaft will take more than that, but the rocker is currently the limiting component.” To install, the only thing that you must do is remove your old rockers. After this task is complete the majority of the work is already done. You will remove the rocker stands, and the shaft system will bolt right into place. The Comp Camps Max-Lift BSR Shaft Rocker System is available from Rocket Industries. For more information, visit www.rocketindustries.com.au

MOBIL 1 GIVES RED BULL BETTER WINGS ExxonMobil is driving Formula 1 success for the Red Bull Team Rather than just a sponsor, ExxonMobil is a technical partner with the Red Bull Formula 1 team. As their fuel (Esso) and lubricant (Mobil 1) partner, they’re able to work hand-in-hand with Honda to maximise the outright performance of the tightly homologated power plant. “ExxonMobil delivered a revolutionary new oil – that has helped push the team forwards,” ExxonMobil’s Global Motorsport Technology Manager, Tomek Young, said. “New components were incorporated as they were found to offer many benefits, including stronger interactions with metal surfaces and lower friction, helping deliver maximum power while offering protection and fuel efficiency. “These benefits translate into an ability to run the engine across a wider range of operating conditions and not be wound back.” In a demonstration of Mobil 1’s commitment to ‘absolute performance’, Tomek confided engineers had been working on these new components for eight years. However, the opportunity to collaborate directly with Honda and Red Bull has ramped up development, enabling

ExxonMobil to bring the new additive package properly into play. Oils are so much more than just viscosity – that’s only half the story. A lubricant’s additives package can represent up to 30 percent of the final product. These carefully selected and highly engineered components are part of every oil and ultimately define how they perform under various temperatures and pressures and it is reportedly what separates Mobil 1 from ordinary oils. While ‘pioneering innovation’ is a must to stay ahead in the incredibly competitive world of F1 – there are also real-world benefits. Vehicle manufacturers are continually striving to

lower engine friction for improved fuel efficiency – while simultaneously extending engine life. Given the long history of Mobil 1 collaborating with manufacturers, there’s no doubt Mobil 1 road users will benefit from the same revolutionary advancements that have helped push Red Bull F1 to the front. Mobil 1 says ‘absolute performance’ and ‘pioneering innovation’ are much more than just tag lines, stating “it’s in our DNA.” An extensive range of Mobil1 oils and lubricants is distributed in Australia by MotorActive. 2021 SEMA MARKET REPORT RELEASED The report states US Automotive Specialty-Equipment Retail Sales have reached a new high The year 2020 was a roller coaster, with COVID-19 and the response to it creating an unprecedented and unpredictable disruption throughout the US economy.

The SEMA report states that forty-eight percent of enthusiasts did more online shopping for parts in 2020 than in 2019, and 40 percent of enthusiasts spent more time working on their vehicle.

Still, the specialty-equipment industry showed resilience with industry retail sales climbing from $46.2 billion to a new high of $47.89 billion in the US, according to the new 2021 SEMA Market Report.

Filled with data on market sizing by parts category and vehicle segment, purchasing channels, and types of consumer, the new report contains key findings such as:

The report provides an overview on the state of the US specialty-equipment market and examines how consumers and businesses adapted to the pandemic, along with how much was spent, and where, on specialty-automotive parts and accessories in 2020.

• Forty percent of enthusiast consumers modify their vehicle to stand out versus 28 percent of non-enthusiasts. • Sixty percent of specialty-equipment consumers are under the age of 40. Young drivers continue to be an important and engaged part of the industry and often buy more involved performance parts or accessories and make heavier modifications to their vehicles. • Forty-three percent of accessorisers turn to search engines and review websites when looking for parts information, while 41 percent look to manufacturer’s websites and 36 percent to retail websites.

While the industry was certainly affected by the pandemic, some businesses were spared from full lockdowns as auto parts were considered an essential business in some areas. Even amid the disruption of the pandemic, many of the industry’s companies reported record sales in 2020 as enthusiasts spent money on their cars instead of other pursuits that were unavailable during the lockdown.

• Just over 50 percent of dollars spent in 2020 went through online channels. However, even with social-distancing measures in place, many consumers still preferred brick-and-mortar retailers for their aftermarket parts purchases. • Pickups remained the biggest vehicle segment for the specialty-equipment market, accounting for 28 percent of all dollars spent, followed by CUVs at 16 percent. PETRONAS: A POSITIVE PARTNERSHIP

AIC’s Luke Truskinger and Aidan Koay recently spoke with Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team’s Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas about their favorite PETRONAS experiences The PETRONAS brand is synonymous with Mercedes-AMG in F1. Together, they have dominated the modern Formula One era by winning a historic seventh consecutive World Constructors’ Championship at the end of the 2020 season. The successes achieved over the years underscore the dynamic collaboration between PETRONAS and The Silver Arrows and demonstrates the relentless determination and talent of its workforce while giving testimony to the prowess of the company’s fluid technology solutions. Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 finished first and second in the driver the 2020 Formula One World Championship, with champion Lewis Hamilton and runner-up Valtteri Bottas quick to recognize the team’s partnership with PETRONAS as a driving force in its success. Great partnerships deliver results for the team and the sponsor both on and off the track, so marketing activations are par for the course of any successful relationship. Unsurprisingly, both Hamilton and Bottas have plenty of stories to tell. “I think the most unique and fun experience I had was we went to Imbak forest, not far from Kuala Lumpur, and we went out to where they were doing a lot of research within the forest in biodiversity medicine – that was quite an interesting visit,” Hamilton said. “Going to the (PETRONAS) Twin Towers for the first time was amazing, because I remember seeing it on TV in a movie, and to then finally get there and see these iconic buildings and not only that, but then see how diverse it is inside. You go in there, there’s a real diverse range of people, and lots of women from different backgrounds. And they’re…powering those towers and keeping PETRONAS alive. “I’ve had so many unbelievable experiences with fans. (To) pick up an odd one…I got a pair of boxer shorts once given to me from a fan, and there’s no way they were going to fit me, they were the tiniest things. I thought maybe she wanted me in a picture of them or something like that, but it was quite funny. “I’ve met some incredible young people who are battling diseases who have been incredibly inspiring. Even just in Australia, in Melbourne, I’ve been out to the hospital and seen some people going through some really difficult times and been massively inspired by the journey of them and their families. “One of the greatest experiences I had, I went to a theatrical show in London and when I was leaving the show, I bumped into this lady. I know she was obviously not expecting to see me, and she was like, ‘Oh my God…your race in 2007, I was in hospital going through cancer and through chemo’ 100

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine August 2021

and she is like ‘you got me through it.’ And I was like, ‘No, I didn’t. You got yourself through it’ and she said “no, but just your races were uplifting.’ “For me, that was a lot to digest because when I’m in that race, I had no idea that I would be impacting someone in that way. So that’s why I always say we win and we lose together because I feel like we build this connection and then we ride the storm kind of out together, right? “And there’s days where I have lows and the fans pick me up and I’d like to hope and think that there’s days that I put on some decent results and help someone maybe get past that short moment or long moment. So, it’s an amazing experience. And I never ever thought that I’d even have fans, so it’s something still that I find difficult to grasp. “The power of the fans really creates the event, and I can’t wait till it’s back fully to normal and we can just continue to have lots and lots of people come.” For Bottas, the PETRONAS Twin Towers is also a standout. “The first time I got to go to the PETRONAS Twin Towers (was one of the coolest). It was really, really cool because obviously I knew the towers by the name for a long time and finally when you get up there it’s pretty cool view, and it’s a long way with an elevator. We went through the different offices and seeing all the people there, there’s so many people working for the company and feeling that support – yeah that was really special,” Bottas said. “I really enjoyed the Orchid Ride and Run thing; I’ve done it a couple of times. It’s always a nice event and I’ve won the race. I don’t know if it’s a race, but for me it was. And I’ve made some Malaysian cooking as well, like some traditional pancakes, that kind of stuff. So, I’ve done some cool stuff (as part of marketing activations). “Obviously (with COVID-19) I’ve missed really meeting race fans lately. It’s good to see now some spectators on the grandstand, but it’s been a while that we’ve had actually like proper fan meetings.

I always find it quite funny when they give me some kind of gifts. Sometimes they are, for me it can be something like a little bit strange food or something like that. “I’ve had autographs being asked to sign on their skin, whether it’s about arm or chest or these kinds of things, and then they tell me that they’re not going to shower for two weeks just to keep the autograph. So, things like that (are quite funny). I definitely miss the support physically from all the fans.” PETRONAS Lubricants International offers different ranges of lubricants for passenger cars, commercial and heavy vehicles, transmission and hydraulic systems, agriculture and earthmoving machinery, motor bikes and industrial and manufacturing equipment under different brands such as Syntium, Urania, Tutela, Ambra, Akcela, and Sprinta.
