A KICK START FROM NAPA AUTO PARTS A new NAPA Auto Parts initiative is helping grass roots racers

Motor racing is a sport like no other and in 2021, NAPA Auto Parts launched an exciting new initiative to open pathways for Australian and New Zealand grass roots competitors. The NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy is an online portal designed to offer tuition, tools, resources and monthly prizes to any motorsport entrant that is striving to be the best they can be – on and off the track. Led by Supercars driver Bryce Fullwood, as the mentor for the program, the NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy is free to all racers aged 13 and up. The Academy offers insights into the world of driving, race craft and analysis, commercial, media and sponsorship, plus detailed information on health and nutrition. The criteria for drivers looking to join the academy is simple – they must have a strong desire to succeed in the sport – no matter if they are a teenaged karter with eyes on racing in Formula 1 or the Repco Supercars Championship or a national or state-based circuit racer, rally, speedway or drag racing driver, who takes their motorsport seriously and is looking for an edge over their rivals. In 2021, a lucky selection of drivers across Australia and New Zealand that were hand selected by the program’s mentors received a $1000 kick start when they were accepted into the academy. On top of this, one lucky academy member will win an all-expenses paid trip to a Supercars race and will join Bryce Fullwood for an insightful experience. In the first six months of the program, over 200 participants registered to be part of the Academy, and Bryce says that he has been excited by the different types of drivers who are participating and looking for that extra edge. “The NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy is an awesome initiative and one that I’m really proud to be a mentor for,” Bryce said. “Motorsport can be a really tricky game to succeed in and the aim of the academy is to help drivers and teams navigate their way through some of the hazards and get the most of their careers. “For those who gain access to the portal, they’ll find information from me about race day preparation, goal setting and your support network. There’s also plenty more about sponsorship, media, health and nutrition – all play an important role in creating a strong, long-lasting career in the sport. “It’s not just for young karters who are just starting out. The NAPA Know How Motorsport Academy is open to all drivers and teams that have the mentality and drive to make the most of their time in the sport. It’s a great initiative and I feel anyone will be able to get something out of it.” If you meet the criteria and are accepted into the academy, you will get full access to the portal, including video tutorials and downloadable content. PRODUCT R&D

PENRITE RACING OILS

The Australian owned and operated Penrite has a range of engine oils for racing applications Penrite says its Racing range of engine oils represent the ultimate performance range of premium full synthetic 100 percent PAO and Ester, Full Zinc+, Shear Free engine oils for competition and road applications.

What make Penrite’s Racing Oils different to standard oils? Penrite states that its Ten Tenths Racing engine oils are made from 100 percent full synthetic PAO (Group IV) and Ester (Group V) base oils combined with a full zinc + anti wear additive system designed to provide the ultimate in performance and protection.

What benefits does full zinc + provide? Penrite Racing oils feature Penrite’s Full Zinc+ anti wear additive package for ultimate engine wear protection. They contain optimum zinc levels, boron and organomolybdenum complex to lift the total level of anti-wear package additives to over 2200+ ppm.

What benefits does shear free technology provide? Shear is the breaking down of oil molecules as a result of heat and load. As shear increases it inhibits the oil’s ability to protect against metalto-metal contact with resultant wear, loss of oil pressure and engine power. Penrite explains that its Shear Free formulation offers start up protection, maintains oil pressure

and eliminates viscosity loss. It says this means that the oil will maintain its operating temperature viscosity for the life of the oil, providing better film strength compared to oils that shear and lose viscosity as they age. Oils that shear as they age lose their operating temperature viscosity, and hence become a lot thinner at operating temperature, thus increasing frictional heat and wear between metal surfaces.

Where are Penrite Racing Oils used? Penrite Racing Oils are used by competitors all over Australia and the Asia Pacific region including in the Australian Supercars Championship. Penrite Racing Oil was in the 2017 Bathurst winning car driven by David Reynolds and Luke Youlden. The Penrite Racing Supercars use the same oil as can be purchased from your local automotive outlet.

Penrite Racing oils are also used by Penrite Ambassadors all over the country in a multitude of different motorsports from on track racing to V8 Superboats. No matter what motorsport you are into, Penrite says its Racing Oils are go to products for high performance engines.

Can they be used in road and off-road vehicles? Penrite Racing oils can be used in both modern and classic non-competition vehicles provided that the specifications are matched to the vehicle’s requirements. Penrite Racing Oils feature late API and ACEA specifications and are suitable for many on and off-road vehicles requiring the ultimate in performance and protection. Penrite states you don’t have to have a racing car to use Penrite Racing Oils, as they can provide the everyday driver with the same outstanding protection and performance as they do in the highest levels of competition.

What are the benefits of Full Synthetic oils? Synthetic base oils give outstanding performance, especially as lower viscosity oils. They naturally have a higher viscosity index which stops them from becoming too thick when cold and too thin when at operating temperature. Hence these oils flow more easily on startup providing engine protection when it is most needed. Penrite explains that they are much less volatile than mineral base oils, meaning they are more stable at temperature, burn less and require less additives that can be the cause of engine deposits. They are also less prone to oxidation providing better anti corrosion protection for the engine.

What is 100 percent PAO (Group IV) and Ester (Group V)? Penrite Racing Oils are made from 100 percent PAO and Ester base oils. These are laboratory 12

made base oils and no refined crude oil is used in these blends. PAO (Poly Alpha Olefin) are extremely pure with identical molecules due to their complex petrochemical manufacturing process. As a result, the chemical oil structure formation is “flat” compared to Group III full synthetic chain structures. Having a “flat” oil structure creates less friction between chemical structures which allows the oil to effectively become “more slippery.”

They have no sulphur, phosphorus and no wax impurities in their structure. They have excellent cold flow properties, are highly resistant to thermal breakdown and have excellent shear stability.

Penrite says the combination of 100 percent PAOs and Ester together with its premium additives, provides the ultimate protection against oxidation due to outstanding heat resistance.

Esters are manufactured by reacting an acid and an alcohol to give ester plus water. There are many types of esters, such as diesters and polyolesters.

Other product benefits include oil pressure stability, longer engine life and greater engine performance.

The benefits of Esters are resistance to thermal breakdown, good metal-wetting ability, high film strength and good shear stability.

Penrite 10 Tenths Racing oils are available from all good auto retailers. For more information, visit www.penriteoil.com.au

guaranteeing maximum performance to what is a record-breaking engine: the super powerful 6.5 litre V12 to which a 48-volt electric motor integrated into the gearbox has been added, powered by a super capacitor, instead of a lithium-ion battery. The Lamborghini Sián powertrain develops a total of 819hp and 720 Nm of maximum torque, establishing itself as the most powerful Lambo ever. ROWE HIGHTEC RACING COOLANT

Every Rowe product is 100 percent made in Germany and is proudly distributed in Australia by MotorActive With sustained levels of extreme stress, pressure and temperature, combined with the crucial importance of maintaining absolute reliability at the critical limit, there are few environments tougher on equipment than motorsport. Given these unrelenting and notoriously destructive conditions, it is understandable motorsport invariably requires a plethora of bespoke products – especially in the area of engine and driveline lubricants. Rowe says its Hightec Racing Coolant is a prime example, stating that this premium-quality, readyto-use coolant not only performs flawlessly at temperatures and pressures well beyond those experienced in a performance road car, it does so without the use of Glycol. Glycol additives are prohibited by virtually all track operators and motorsport bodies due to their propensity to leave a greasy residue if spilled onto the racing surface. Rowe says that more than just being motorsport approved, the advanced formulation of its waterbased coolant provides excellent heat transfer, has minimal tendency to foam and eliminates the typical problems caused by unsuitable water.

It states the coolant also exhibits outstanding, long-term resistance to corrosion, cavitation and the formation of undesirable deposits within the cooling system. Free of nitrite, amine and phosphate, it’s fully compatible with all materials typically used in engines and their cooling systems. Rowe says this makes Rowe Hightec Racing Coolant ideal for both alloy and cast-iron engines. In order to exploit the full benefit of Hightec Racing Coolant, Rowe highly recommends a complete change of coolant. Rowe says it recognises that racing improves the breed – which is why it owns a race winning motorsport team. Rowe says it is the ultimate laboratory, with every racing kilometre equivalent to 20km of performance road driving. For more information, visit www.rowe-oil.com.au or call 1800 350 622.

THE RUGGED SHIFT

The Australian performance landscape has changed dramatically over the last two decades A considerable shift towards diesel off-road vehicles is being witnessed and High Performance Diesel (HPD) says its products are popular with serious offroaders, tourers and weekend warriors having earnt a reputation for excellent quality, performance and durability, working reliably and withstanding the most punishing conditions. Whether it’s the latest technically advanced vehicles or older, simpler mechanical vehicles, owners want more power and better drivability. They also want to see beautifully made, high quality, durable parts when they open the bonnet, giving them peace-of-mind. When many were sadly watching the demise of the locally built sedan with epic Commodore vs

Falcon battles, HPD says it was already making performance parts for the equally passionate and colourful Patrol vs Landcruiser rivals as well as the rapidly increasing dual-cab owners. HPD states it was one of Australia’s first manufacturers to focus on the diesel 4WD owners chasing more power and torque to tackle tough trails and rock steps as well as towing caravans uphill on the highway not wanting to create a long line of impatient motorists.

The nitty gritty In the diesel space, injecting more fuel for extra power increases heat more dangerously than increasing boost. Intercoolers are vital for reducing intake temperatures for those who want to safely make power gains. When performing tuning, substantial power increases are easily achieved by upgrading to bigger cores in our front or top mounted units. HPD says its larger intercoolers can easily support 200kW plus at the wheels with appropriate modifications. It says the Australian made HPD intercoolers are ideal for the everyday tourer through to performance off-road vehicles, featuring extremely

robust bar and plate cores with highly durable end tanks and thick, billet alloy mounts. HPD states that its Turbo Kits make it relatively easy and cost-effective to safely make big power gains. All HPD kits include every part required for installation using basic workshop tools. Available for Patrols with TD42s and Landcruisers with 1HZs and 1HD-FTEs, kits can be optioned with a choice of Garrett turbos, intercoolers and exhausts depending on the customer’s application and needs. HPD explains that some of its customers simply want a modest power increase on their trusty old NA motor and don’t want to jeopardise reliability, while others are pursuing 30+ psi to achieve some impressive numbers. TURBO SYSTEM OPTIMISATION A guide to setting up your turbocharger from Garrett Advancing Motion In this article, Garrett Advancing Motion explains the Turbo System Optimisation process, covering auxiliary systems and how to properly calculate, install, and identify problems, as well as tips for how to correct common problems that arise from incorrect installation.

AIR FILTER SELECTION It is important to appropriately size the air filter for the maximum flow rate of the application. A target face velocity of ≤130 ft/min at redline is used to minimise restriction and to provide the turbo with the air necessary for it to function optimally. If the turbo does not have access to the proper amount of air, excessive restriction will occur and cause: • Oil leakage from the compressor side piston ring, which results in oil loss, a fouled intercooler and potentially smoke out of the tailpipe. • Increased pressure ratio, which can lead to turbo overspeed. • Overspeed, which will reduce turbo durability and could result in early turbo failure.

OIL SUPPLY AND DRAINAGE Ball bearing turbo: An oil restrictor is recommended for optimal performance with ball bearing turbochargers. Oil pressure of 40 – 45 psi at maximum engine speed is recommended to prevent damage to the turbocharger’s internals. In order to achieve this pressure, a restrictor with a 0.040” orifice will normally suffice, but you should always verify the oil pressure entering the turbo after the restrictor to ensure the components function properly. Recommended oil feed is -3AN or -4AN line or hose/tubing with a similar ID. As always, use an oil filter that meets or exceeds the OEM specifications. Note: oil leakage should not occur on a properly functioning system if restrictor is not used, unless the system pressure is excessively high.

Journal bearing turbo: Journal bearings function similarly to rod or crank bearings in an engine – oil pressure is required

to keep components separated. An oil restrictor is generally not needed except for oil-pressureinduced leakage. The recommended oil feed for journal bearing turbochargers is -4AN or hose/tubing with an ID of approximately 0.25”. Be sure to use an oil filter that meets or exceeds the OEM specifications.

Oil drain: In general, the larger the oil drain, the better. However, a -10AN is typically sufficient for proper oil drainage but try not to have an inner diameter smaller than the drain hole in the housing as this will likely cause the oil to back up in the center housing. Speaking of oil backing up in the center housing, a gravity feed needs to be just that – the oil outlet should follow the direction of gravity +/15° when installed in the vehicle on level ground. If a gravity feed is not possible, a scavenge pump should be used to ensure that oil flows freely away from the center housing. When installing your turbocharger, ensure that the turbocharger axis of rotation is parallel to the level ground within +/- 15°. This means that the oil inlet/ outlet should be within 15° of being perpendicular to level ground. Be sure to avoid undulations in the line or extended lengths parallel to the ground; draining into oil pan below oil level; deadheading into a component behind the oil pan; and the area behind the oil pan (windage tray window) where oil sling occurs from crankshaft.

WATER LINE OPTIMISATION Water cooling is a key design feature for improved durability, and Garrett recommends that if your turbo has an allowance for water-cooling, you hook up the water lines. Water cooling eliminates the destructive occurrence of oil coking by utilising the Thermal Siphon Effect to reduce the Peak Heat Soak Back Temperature on the turbine side piston after shut-down. In order to get the greatest benefit from your water-cooling system, avoid undulations in the water lines to maximise the Thermal Siphon Effect.

For best results, set the orientation of the center housing to 20°. Significant damage to the turbo can occur from improper water line setups.

RACING IMPROVES THE BREED Following on from the success it enjoyed working with Tickford Racing, RYCO Filters will be hitting the track again in 2022 When it does so, RYCO will be providing Tickford Racing with a variety of filtration products to assist in its endeavour to secure the Supercars Championship. “We’re extremely excited to continue our technical partnership with Tickford Racing,” RYCO Group Pty Ltd General Manager – Sales, Tony Sheedy, said. 2021 was a watershed year for both Tickford Racing and the RYCO engineering research and development team. “Last year, we learnt so much about the extremely high demands that the championship places on both machine and driver,” Tony said. “Both on and off the track, the team at Tickford Racing showed their resilience and commitment to the task of winning in what is considered the world’s most competitive touring car championship.” Again in 2021, the teams had to weather the storm of the COVID-19 pandemic, spending extended periods on the road, away from the workshop, their families and friends, due to border closures. The partnership certainly delivered with Cam Waters and James Moffat standing on the second step of the podium at Australia’s biggest race, the Bathurst 1000. “This was a fantastic way to cap off what was a challenging series for the team, and it has made us both even hungrier to go one step further in 2022,” Tony remarked. While the teams were pounding out the miles, Alastair Hampton – RYCO’s General Manager, Engineering and Innovation – and his team of hard-working engineers were locked away in Melbourne’s state-of-the-art testing and product development facility, developing new filtration products to increase performance and improve reliability for the Tickford Ford Mustangs. “The work we’ve been doing the last 12 months has been focused on shifting the dial in filtration technology to help Supercars achieve their performance targets for the eagerly awaited Gen 3 cars that will hit racetracks in 2023,” Alastair explained. This exciting news proves just how important filtration has become in modern racing applications. Pushing the boundaries of filtration technology is delivering a wide variety of advantages to both teams and the entire championship. “We have proven that improved filtration, be it oil, 20

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine February 2022

air or fuel, helps maintain engine performance over longer periods and reduces engine wear,” Alastair said. “This helps the category maintain performance parity and reduces costs for the teams as it will allow longer periods between engine rebuilds.” Cost containment has been a significant focus for developing the new Gen 3 Supercars. RYCO has been working closely with the GM and Ford engine builders in the development phase to help them reach the goals set out for performance and reliability. “To secure the future of the series, the Gen 3 race cars must be a lot more cost-effective to build and maintain,” Alastair said. The current ‘car of the future’ engines are built using many one-off parts and require frequent rebuilds to maintain peak performance.

“One of the issues with the current rules is that the teams with smaller budgets may not be able to rebuild as often to help maintain their engine performance throughout the entire season,” Alastair explained. “This affects both parity across the field and has blown out costs significantly.” To help contain costs, Supercars set out aggressive targets for initial engine build costs and increased the length of their service intervals while still producing in excess of 600 horsepower. Engine builders are using more ‘stock’ components than ever before to deliver this. “While I can’t reveal the exact targets for service intervals, let’s just say they are approaching something more in line with those you’d expect from a passenger car,” Alastair said. To hit these targets, the new Gen 3 engines must

MEMBER FEATURE

stay clean because they won’t deal with the same contamination levels as the ones that the team will run in the 2022 season. “Those stock components used in the Gen 3 engine will be under a lot more strain than they’re probably being designed to deal with,” Alastair explained. “Our job is to help protect them, reduce contamination and maintain peak performance for a longer period.” Alastair mentioned that space is at a premium in most racing applications, which is highlighted under the bonnet of the Gen 3 Mustang. “Our Z160ST is the only oil filter on the market that will flow enough oil whilst being compact enough to fit between the block and headers in the Gen 3 Mustang engine,” he said. “When the team at RYCO first started working with

Grove Racing and Tickford, we were surprised to discover that they were still using antiquated filtration technology to protect these highperformance thoroughbreds. “The oil and air filters that Supercar teams have been using for decades actually provide less engine protection than those found in a standard passenger vehicle. “We invited a delegation from the Tickford engineering team to join us for a tour of our worldclass testing facility in Melbourne, where we discovered that race engineers, as a whole, fear change. “These guys are always chasing horsepower, so their primary focus was on flow rates, with little attention devoted to filtration performance, even if it meant sacrificing engine longevity.” Working with the team’s engineering brains

trust, Alastair and his team took a close look at their current filtration systems, benchmarked performance against RYCO’s latest in filtration technology, and developed a program designed to increase flow and improve filtration. “Inside a race engine, the dynamic clearances are opening up and closing at a far higher degree because they’re effectively under higher internal forces, and as you can imagine, this accelerates wear if contaminants are present,” Alastair explained. Compared to your average passenger vehicle, race engines are much more expensive. They are subjected to high-stress levels for extended periods and operate at much higher RPM. As a result, they are pushing more oil and fuel through the engine and ingesting a lot more air. “We have already proven that we can improve oil filtration performance with the launch of the Z160ST filter,” Alastair said. “That, combined with the test results from the prototypes of the other racing filters we currently have in development, has changed their mindset. “We have become an extremely valuable technical partner and shown them that they can have their cake and eat it too.” The Z160ST oil filter is an excellent example of how this relationship is delivering commercial outcomes for RYCO. “Our Z160ST oil filter was developed initially for race applications and from the lessons learnt working side-by-side with Tickford Racing,” Alastair said. “When compared to the filters they were using previously, it is more robust, has a higher flow rate and provides better filtration, and now it’s available for purchase at your local parts store. “That means drivers of performance vehicles, in particular, those with modified LS or Ford Coyote engines, can go out and purchase the same filters used in the Supercar series.” When you consider it in context, RYCO’s involvement with Tickford harks back to the golden era of Group A Racing, when motorsport was a testbed for new components and innovation. Back then, racing was about improving the breed. “In those days, the lessons learnt on track filtered down and were applied to our daily drives,” Alastair said. “I feel like we’re bringing that back to the sport, and it’s a philosophy that we’re both excited about and committed to. “With products like our Z160ST oil filter, we’re reigniting the win on Sunday, sell on Monday mantra that was the basis for the development of racing legends like the XY GTHO, A9X Torana and the E49 Charger.” To find out more about RYCO Filters, visit www.rycofilters.com.au Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine February 2022

DBA EXPANDS ITS RANGE OF BRAKE ROTORS AND PADS And even more new releases are on the way

Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) continues to expand its range of performance brake rotor and pad applications and in this article shares some tips on what to look out for when selecting a braking component for the racetrack. The latest models to have been added to DBA’s impressive line-up include the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Trackhawk, Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and Hyundai iN30, while forthcoming releases will feature performance products for the Toyota Yaris GR, Volkswagen Golf R Mk8, and many more. It has also been a successful year of collaboration between DBA and Supercars team Tickford Racing/Automotive, with 5000 Series rotors and XP pads now available for the current Ford Ranger and Mustang models – not just through the wide network of DBA brake specialists but also directly from Tickford. DBA’s performance pack consists of its twopiece 5000 Series brake rotor and the Xtreme Performance brake pads as the perfect complement. When looking for brake rotors for a track going car with the intention to re-use the rotors after a session, DBA would like to remind vehicle owners and mechanics alike that a heat-treated product is really the only way to go. All 5000 Series rotors undergo Thermal Stability Profiling (TSP), meaning they receive heat treatment cycles during the manufacturing process, resulting in increased metallurgical stability.

With its 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminium hat, 5000 Series rotors feature a two-piece design, which thanks to its reduced unsprung mass notably improves vehicle handling. It also enables users to replace only the rings at the end of their service lives. 5000 Series performance rotors, like their 4000 Series counterparts, are available in various slot and drilled surface designs. For track use DBA recommends the T3 slotted surface design. DBA warns that a cheap rotor with inferior material and poor cooling vents can crack under extreme heat. It says the 5000 Series rotors feature DBA’s unique, patented Kangaroo Paw ventilation design, facilitating up to 20 percent more efficient cooling of the rotor. Further, 5000 Series rotors make use of thermographic heat paint (TGHP), providing a method to monitor rotor temperatures and take appropriate measures in case maximum recommended temperatures are frequently exceeded. When it comes to brake pads, DBA says its Xtreme Performance pads are the ‘ultimate road pad’ for unparalleled stopping power and reliability. Features include its unique, low metallic, low copper friction formulation, scorching treatment for increased performance, and application-specific HVN shims and slots for reduced vibration.

The range consists of over 160 unique part numbers, of which approximately 60 percent have so far received ECE R90 approval and covers all popular performance models in the market. While the Xtreme Performance pad is also perfectly capable of performing light trackwork, DBA advises that its all-new range of Race Performance pads, exclusively developed for track and racing applications, will be launched later this year, with more information to be released soon. To learn more or find a DBA performance product for a particular vehicle, visit www.dba.com.au, or call 1800 730 039.

GET INTO THE GROOVE With ER² Clutch Cover Assemblies

Every now and then a genuine innovation comes along for a product that has basically remained unchanged for many years. Clutch Industries says such an innovation can be found in its performance clutches with its ER2 Groove pressure plate. 4Terrain and Mantic Stage Cover Assemblies include this Patented ER2 Groove Design which is

22

Australian Automotive Aftermarket Magazine February 2022

a unique groove pattern that is CNC machined on the friction face of the pressure plate. This groove has been specifically designed to increase the Mean Effective Radius of the pressure plate and assist in heat removal. The increase in the Mean Effective Radius of the cover assembly gives a significant increase in torque capacity. By adding the groove to the pressure plate, the inside radius of the friction face has effectively been increased. The first 8mm of the pressure plate has all but been removed and added to this, there is progressively less material removed as the radius increases. The net effect of this is to move the effective inside radius further out. When comparing the Mean Effective Radius (Rm) of the ER2 version to the non ER2 version, you can see the ER2 version is further out (left image). Clutch Industries explains that moving the Rm out has the effect of increasing the surface area

of the clutch which increases the torque capacity. Torque capacity is directly related to Rm, so the greater Mean Effective Radius the higher the toque capacity. Clutch Industries states that this Australian engineered innovation gives 4Terrain and Mantic clutches an advantage over other performance clutch systems while not compromising on drivability or durability. Each system features ultra-light disc rotors, four or six-piston calipers, and high-performance brake pads along with a complete fitting kit as a direct bolt-on option. This range has applications for a wide variety of local and international vehicles, including the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, VW Golf, Nissan Skyline, Subaru WRX, and Nissan 200SX. It has options for performance vehicles as well as 4WDs like the Ford Ranger and Toyota LandCruiser.

XTREME CLUTCH SPRUNG TWIN PLATE ORGANIC UPGRADES Xtreme Clutch is continuing to expand its range of sprung twin plate organic performance clutch kits The kits have been designed specifically for high horsepower street driven vehicles. Xtreme Clutch says the new range of upgrades are already proving very popular in the Australian market as well as overseas and provides a great solution for vehicle owners looking for a driveable clutch solution for high-powered vehicles. Xtreme Clutch is a part of the Australian Clutch Services group of brands and covers the street performance and motorsport range of clutch kits. Incorporating a large selection of performance clutch options for each application, the comprehensive range of upgrades are popular around the world with modified vehicle owners and race teams. The Xtreme Clutch sprung twin plate organic kits are available in two sizes, a 230mm and 270mm.

The Stolz brake upgrade systems are designed to limit heat build-up and distribute and transmit forces according to the calliper’s specifications based on complete structural analysis. Stolz’s callipers can be purchased in black, gold, red, or silver finishes. A thorough thermal and flow analysis is completed on all designs, which helps to minimise temperature transfer from the pad to the calliper, from the calliper to the brake fluid, and from the disc. The ultra-light weight disc rotor available from Stolz is constructed from two pieces to create ideal stiffness. The rotor features aerodynamic ribs and well-placed drill holes, which also help with heat disbursement by decreasing the frictional heat delivered to the pad and calliper. Stolz’s brake pads are advertised as being reliable and consistent even after repeated heavy applications. They are made from non-asbestos organic compounds, and they are designed to produce low noise and low dust. The brand’s fitting kit is designed for each individual model by utilising the same forged aluminum alloys that are used in the construction of the callipers. This helps to maximise the stiffness while also decreasing the chances of fatigue failure. For more information, visit www.cooldrive.com.au 24

The 270mm clutch (pictured) incorporates a pressed metal style heavy duty pressure plate and performance flywheel. The 270mm clutch options have been developed specifically for larger capacity engines and are popular in supercharged V8 and turbo 6-cylinder applications. The design includes a strap driven intermediate plate which minimises the “twin plate rattle” often heard in multi-plate clutch kits due to the floating intermediate plate. “The 270mm clutch option allows for excellent performance in highly modified street vehicles that require a quiet solution,” Xtreme Clutch Senior Mechanical Engineer, Stewart Furze, said. “We have been working hard to develop the most driveable twin plate solutions we can to help support the expanding tuning market. “With so many groups now able to get huge horsepower and torque figures from their performance packages, it is critical we can provide a clutch solution that retains the excellent level of driveability that performance vehicle owners demand.” For smaller capacity turbo charged engines, the 230mm clutch is well suited. These kits include a lightweight, motorsport inspired alloy pressure plate along with a 4140 chromoly flywheel. “Our 230mm range of upgrades are highly adaptable to different makes and models from around the world,” Stewart said. “In the past, we offered these with rigid centre organic discs for street applications, however these new sprung kits for select vehicles reduce

shock loading on the transmission in comparison to the rigid style discs and are well suited to high performance street use.” Both clutch designs are recommended for street applications up to 1000 Nm, however Xtreme Clutch also has an option for vehicles being used in motorsport. “We are also offering the 230mm sprung style multi-plate kits with a ceramic friction material for higher heat capacity”, Stewart said. “These kits are recommended for motorsport applications where minimal shock-loading on the transmission is critical, such as race cars modified for increased power but still using the factory gearbox.” The kits come complete with everything required for the installation such as release bearing or concentric slave cylinder (application specific), metal alignment tool, replacement bolts and spigot bearing as required. “We are always looking to provide everything the installer may require in the kit, and this is something we put a significant amount of time and effort into,” Australian Clutch Services Sales Manager, Colin Jevons, said. “Whether it be for our Xtreme Clutch performance products or our ClutchPro standard replacement kits, we are looking to provide a kit with everything that is required for the installation process to help minimise the chances of installation delays and to ensure that critical components such as spigot bearings and release bearings are replaced at the same time as the clutch. “We are even including spline grease in our kits and thread locking compound with our flywheel bolts.” The Australian Clutch Services product range is available through a nationwide distributor network and the new range of sprung twin plate kits are available now. TORQUE V POWER

In this article, the experts at Exedy take a look at why torque and not power is the driving force behind performance clutches Whenever talking to anybody about performance cars, Exedy says it is way too easy to get lost in the hype of engine power and explains it is actually engine torque that matters.

Peak engine power is the point in an engine’s rev range where the relationship between engine RPM and the torque (force) applied at this RPM (not peak engine torque) is most efficient.

Clutch performance is measured by the maximum amount of Torque (force) applied through the driveline before the clutch will begin to slip. This is known as the clutch’s torque capacity.

Why clutch selection based on peak power output can lead to an underperforming clutch

Torque is the measurement of force (or call it twist) applied in a rotational motion. Simply put, the higher the engine torque, the harder it twists and the faster the car will accelerate. Power is the measurement of distance (or in this case, rotation) covered over one second due to the torque applied over this time.

The differences between peak engine torque and peak power output

As Exedy outlines above, peak engine torque is the maximum amount of force (or twist) applied to the driveline at any one time. While the amount of torque can be calculated at any specific power output and engine RPM, peak engine torque cannot be calculated by using peak power output and engine RPM. Generally, the amount of Torque being applied to the driveline at peak power output is significantly lower than peak torque. This can be seen in the sample engine dyno meter chart shown below.

Peak engine torque is the point in an engine’s rev range where the most torque (force) is being generated. This peak engine torque is independent and not dependent on engine RPM.

Power and torque curves greatly vary for each type of engine and even more so with different engine tunes and other modifications. Exedy says that basing your clutch selection on

peak power output can lead to severe deficiencies in clutch torque capacity and a clutch that does not meet your needs or expectations.

How can you get your peak engine torque figure? Exedy explains that anyone who has tuned your car on a dyno can give you the peak engine torque of your vehicle – all you need to do is ask for it. Whether you just need extra torque capacity for towing or intend on taking part in the odd track day, Exedy says its range has something to offer. Exedy states that it has a rich heritage in motorsport which over the years has included successful partnerships with Ferrari in Formula 1 and more recently multiple world championships with the Yamaha factory racing team in MotoGP. Further, it states that as one of the world’s leading OEM clutch manufacturers, it has used this expertise and its comprehensive engineering test facilities to apply these advanced technologies into the Exedy Racing range of performance clutches. With everything from Sports Tuff, single sports organic/ceramic series to the Hyper Series Carbon-R triple plate, the Exedy Racing range of clutch products caters for all disciplines of motorsport and more. BENDIX OFFERS MORE WHOAAA For Mustang and other future classics

It is common for car discussions between petrol heads to quickly turn to the numbers: how much horsepower? How many rear wheel kilowatts? How fast down the strip? While it is one thing to go fast, for safety’s sake, it is just as important to have adequate stopping power, both on the track and on the road. As a global leader in the automotive aftermarket sector with more than 70 years’ experience, Bendix is in the process of launching a range of braking packages designed for modern classics and muscle cars, beginning with the current model Ford Mustang. The new Bendix Ultimate+ range includes an upgrade package featuring a set of its Ultimate front rotors, Ultimate+ brake pads, replacement braided brake hoses, brake rotor cleaning wipes and a can of its Cleanup brake disc cleaner. Especially designed for use with the Mustang’s Brembo front callipers, the Ultimate front rotors meet Ford’s original specifications for size, diameter and stud pattern spacing, ensuring the rotors are an easy fit while providing long-term reliability and performance. Drawing on Bendix’s extensive experience as Australia’s largest manufacturer of friction material products and braking expertise, the range includes high carbon metallurgy steel for better thermal stability and a consistent pedal feel in both track and everyday applications. Additionally, the Ultimate rotors make use of diamond tip slots and v-shaped dimples to effectively dissipate heat, while repelling dirt and water.

Further complementing the Ultimate+ package is Bendix’s braided brake hoses, which feature a Teflon-coated core line, which is wrapped in a stainless-steel braid and then coated in a protective outer sleeve. The major benefit of braided brake lines is that the steel sheath prevents the line from expanding under extreme pressure, delivering a more consistent brake feel, while also better protecting the lines from damage. While initially available for the Ford Mustang, Bendix’s Ultimate+ Performance Brake Upgrade Kits will be released for additional makes and models later in the first quarter of 2022. These will include packages to suit selected Holden Commodores, Subaru WRX and BRZ as well as its Toyota 86 stablemate. For more information, visit www.bendix.com.au

STEERING PARTS FROM ZF AFTERMARKET Steering components are critical to the safety of all cars, and especially those with performance applications ZF says LEMFÖRDER is one of the world’s leading brands in suspension and steering technology in the automotive sector. Part of ZF’s global portfolio of premium brands, LEMFÖRDER products are fitted as original equipment and available to the aftermarket for passenger vehicles and performance cars. The quality of LEMFÖRDER parts/products enable the suspension geometry to handle the excessive strain that performance cars demand. Steering and chassis parts from LEMFÖRDER include stabiliser mounts and links, rubberto-metal components like axle bearings and suspension and strut mounts, control arms and bearings, tie rods and suspension joints. Also available from ZF in Oceania are OEM-quality SACHS shock absorbers and TRW steering and suspension components.

USEFUL STEERING TIPS Suspension and steering parts must be checked regularly, as they play a decisive role in the safe handling of a car. When it comes to inspecting, diagnosing and replacing common steering and suspension components, ZF Aftermarket says you should keep the following information in mind.

Control Arms Control arms are installed as pairs on the front and rear axle, connecting the chassis to the wheels. A defective control arm can manifest in the following ways: • Noise (squeaking, creaking, rumbling) • Deteriorating drivability • Increasingly woolly and imprecise steering • Uneven tyre wear The exact steps are set by the relevant vehicle manufacturer, with the below steps from ZF Aftermarket a guide for workshops to follow: 1. Lift the vehicle using a car lift, which makes it easier to correctly tighten the control arm fixing screws. TIP: Depending on the axle design, the control arm may need to be secured against falling with a suitable device, eg. a transmission lifter.

2. Treat the fixing screws and nuts of the control arm with rust solvent for a few minutes to loosen the components. 3. On vehicles with automotive headlight levelling, it may be necessary to detach the levelling sensor from the control arm. 4. If the stabiliser is connected to the control arm, loosen and remove the corresponding stabiliser fixing screws. 5. Loosen and remove the control arm fixing screws. 6. Loosen the ball joint at the steering knuckle with a suitable tool, such as a puller. 7. Remove the old control arm. 8. Clean the mounting flange of the ball joint on the steering knuckle with sandpaper and then brake cleaner. This is to prevent single rust particles entering the new control arm joint via the ball pin, potentially leading to premature failure of the joint. 9. Fit the new control arm with the supplied accessories and attach new fixing screws and nuts. 10. Reattach the stabiliser and, if applicable, the levelling senor for the headlight levelling to the control arm. 11. Lower the vehicle until the suspension is compressed. 12. Tighten the fixing screws with the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. 13. Lower the vehicle entirely. 14. Measure the chassis and adjust if necessary. 15. Check and, if necessary, adjust the headlight settings on vehicles with automotive headlight levelling where the levelling sensor is attached to the control arm. 16. To conclude, test-drive the vehicle. TIP: If the control arm is in working order, it is possible to only replace the defective bearings and joints; however, replacing bearings, bushings and ball joints can be complex and costly. Replacing the entire arm is generally safer and often less expensive.

Strut Mounts The top fastening of the suspension strut is attached to the chassis via the strut mount. As the strut mount must have both a damping force and a rotatable mounting for unhindered steering resetting, there are strict requirements for its function and wear resistance. A worn or defective strut mount can be recognised by various symptoms, including: • Squeaking during spring movements of the chassis

• Poor cornering • Crackling noises during steering wheel movements • Restricted resetting of the steering after cornering • Knocking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces If the suspension strut mount has been checked and a defect has been detected, ZF Aftermarket recommends that it should be replaced as follows: 1. Remove the wheels. 2. Remove the suspension strut and clamp it in an appropriate fixture. 3. Compress the suspension spring using a spring tensioner until it is released from the seat of the suspension strut mount 4. Remove the nut on the damper connecting rod. 5. Position the new strut mount in its installation position. In doing so, check that the lower part of the mount is seated correctly on the suspension spring. 6. Fit the bolts and fastening components and tighten the lock nuts to the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. 7. Carefully release the spring tensioner. In the process, continue to check that the suspension spring is placed on the strut mount and on the suspension strut plate correctly. 8. Refit the suspension strut in the vehicle. 9. Refit the wheels and perform a full wheel alignment. Finally carry out a test drive. TIP: Like other chassis components, suspension strut mounts should always be replaced in pairs. EVO T1 COILOVER SUSPENSION PEDDERS PENRITH BILSTEIN Now also for Toyota Supra CHOOSES MAHA MAHA says Pedders Penrith is the latest workshop to update to German precision and reliability

MAHA, a worldwide supplier of German made premium workshop equipment, began fitting its Automotive Test Lanes at Pedders’ premises in 2019 and since then has rolled out machines to workshops all over Australia. “By teaming with MAHA we are able to provide our stores with state-of-the-art test lanes that not only provide them with excellent drive on brake and suspension testing but also allows each store to add on to the base units to provide a tailored diagnostic solution depending on their customer base,” Pedders Penrith Owner, Nick Rouggos, said.

For many people, the Toyota Supra is as Japanese as manga, Godzilla or sake.

Fans were shocked when the sports car was discontinued in 2002, then 17 years later, the dry spell came to an end and the GR Supra became an ingenious success: great design, mega-direct steering, ideal weight distribution of 50:50, active differential and convincing engines. The suspension experts at Bilstein decided to squeeze the maximum out of these benchmarks and, together with the German partner Lightweight Performance and other renowned tuning companies, built a 462.9hp track tool. All videos on the project that have been published so far can be found at www.performance.bilstein.com/en/toyota-supra The heart of the conversion is the new Bilstein EVO T1 coilover suspension, which is available now. The “T” in the name stands for “Track.” This means that the road-legal and very comfortable coilover suspension not only provides a great deal of driving pleasure in everyday use, but also on the racetrack. Tuned using Bilstein handling tests on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife and road surfaces all over the world, the Bilstein EVO T1 is the ideal choice when maximum setup options are required.

“Some stores will value add and opt to upgrade to the knock detection and tread license plate camera as well. “It is a pleasure to be partnered with a company that shares our values and prides itself on its product and its people, which is what Pedders is built on.” After various sites in far corners of Australia provided outstanding feedback, MAHA says Nick and his team at Pedders Penrith were able to order all the extra options without hesitation. MAHA explains that the MBT2250 test lane which is now being installed at Pedders locations has been built for high volume and accurate repeatable vehicle testing. The MAHA MBT2250 can be optioned with noise detection, suspension system testing, warped rotor testing, oval drum testing, electric park brake testing, AWD brake testing, wheel track indication, an axle load of 3.5t up to 20t, motorcycle testing, and license plate recognition. Thanks to the 10-fold dual-click adjustment via an aluminium knob, rebound and bump damping can be adjusted in parallel without tools in the installed state. For the front axle, for example, only the bonnet must be opened to access the knob. A significantly more precise steering behaviour compared to original equipment and the more direct contact to the road are only a taste of what Supra pilots can expect from the dynamic damper settings, says Bilstein.

In addition, the EVO T1 can also be used to lower the Supra by between 10 and 35 mm, depending on the axle position and engine. This can be flexibly varied at any time without removal and noticeably reduces pitching and rolling movements. In addition, every setting of the EVO T1 is safe to drive. All in all, your own Supra remains a daily driver that makes the drive to work just as much fun as the trip to the race track, says Bilstein. Incidentally, the EVO T1 is the latest member of the EVO Performance Line, representing the latest generation of coilover suspensions from Bilstein. With their successful design, these products have even won the iF Design Award 2021. PASSION, POWER AND PERFORMANCE Harrop Engineering Managing Director and passionate motorsport enthusiast, Heath Moore, has been the driving force behind this iconic Australian brand The company was founded in 1955 by Len Harrop and his wife Elsa, who started out producing weaving machines from a small shed in the Victorian suburb of Brunswick. Their formula for customer satisfaction was good old Australian ingenuity and hard work – a formula that is still embraced by the Harrop team to this day. “The business grew steadily, and they expanded into other areas, including industrial foodprocessing equipment and heavy haulage and earthmoving accessories. But when their son, Ron, joined them in 1963 after completing a boiler making apprenticeship, the dye was cast for the business to take a new direction,” Heath explained. Fast forward to 1968 and Beechey’s Speed Shop and Jane’s Autoland car yard were both operating out of the Melbourne Suburb of Brunswick as well. It wasn’t long before two Australian motorsport legends, Norm Beechey and Bob Jane, were filling work orders at Harrop Engineering for machining and fabrication work to help support their on-track programs. Ron’s enthusiasm for ‘making things’ began at an early age. Ron was welding together go-karts in the back shed by the time he turned ten. In his teenage years, his passion would extend to modifying cars. By the time he’d started developing parts for Norm Beechey and Bob Jane, Ron was also working on his own projects – beginning with an MGTC powered Morris Minor, followed in quick succession by a much-loved Holden EH and his famous FJ, Harrop’s Howler.

“At drag strips around Australia, Ron and his FJ quickly earned a reputation as a giant-killer. The formidable pair were claiming wins and breaking records at almost every race meeting they attended,” Heath explained. “This is impressive when you consider Ron originally bought the FJ from Norm Beechey for $29.” ‘Harrop’s Howler’ would ultimately record an 11.8 second standing quarter, with a top speed of 118mph. “At the start of the 1970s, Harrop began working with Harry Firth and the Holden Dealer Team,” Heath said. “This increased the volume of work significantly, and Harrop Engineering quickly built a reputation for quality, precision and innovation. “While the business has changed significantly, these values remain woven into the fabric of the business some 65 years on and include third generation leadership with Len’s grandson, Tim Harrop, as our Operations Manager.” Heath’s journey at Harrop started 13 years ago when the ADRAD Group acquired Harrop in 2008. His background in corporate, including a stint at Macquarie Bank, armed him with the commercial skill set to plot a course for what was an already iconic and admired Australian automotive performance brand. On his arrival at Harrop, Heath discovered a passionate, highly skilled engineering, design and manufacturing team, with which he quickly developed a strong bond. When the opportunity to join the team as the Commercial Manager was

offered, Heath was quick to accept with a shared passion for performance. “Right from day one, I was confident the business had the technical expertise to move forward. But the product mix, sales, distribution and marketing functions needed an overhaul so that was my initial focus,” Heath said. “Over the last ten years, we’ve executed well on these critical components, developing a more robust and complete business model.” To continue to build brand equity and drive awareness, Heath invested heavily in marketing, putting a significant focus on growing Harrop’s digital footprint as an early adopter of social media. “We wanted to engage more directly with our existing and potential customers, so we kept doubling down on our investment in digital media and we’ve been reaping the rewards ever since,” Heath said. Today, Harrop Engineering’s most extensive product category is vehicle-based and performance-focused, but it’s not just about passenger vehicles. “When we talk about vehicle performance, it could be a train, a tram, a truck, an aircraft or a boat,” Heath explained. “While cars are the majority of the business, we are continually developing new products and programs for customers with vehicles that are non-traditional from an enthusiast’s point of view.” Heath explained that to secure the future of the business, the team at Harrop has to continually foster new markets to ensure they have an

technology continues to impact the aftermarket performance industry.

“We’re recognised as leaders in supercharger technology, and a lot of our digital media is focused on promoting that range, but our traction offering that includes differentials and torque management products is equally as strong,” Heath said.

“Integrating hardware into modern vehicles is becoming more technically challenging. We’re continually increasing our investment to ensure we have the skills and resources to tackle these challenges.

Harrop Engineering also services various industrial customers in the mining, transport and public transport industries, providing bespoke solutions to numerous OE manufacturers. “But as this is the performance issue, and deep down that’s where my passion lies, so let’s start digging deeper,” Heath said. “The end of automotive vehicle manufacturing in Australia and the increasing complexity of new car

“Whether it’s EV, hydrogen or one of the other emerging alternative fuel technologies, as the trend towards low carbon emissions powertrains grows, we are anticipating and developing programs to service these emerging markets with innovative performance solutions.” Harrop is well placed to pivot as new technologies and markets emerge. The business has a high level of vertical integration primarily due to its well-established Australian manufacturing base.

“We have invested heavily to provide our skilled workforce with state-of-the-art skills in CNC software programming, modern automation equipment and global benchmarking techniques. ‘Having our product development and manufacturing facility all under one roof significantly reduces design, prototyping and production timelines. “We have steel, iron and aluminium foundries located in Australia which greatly helps fortify our supply chain and provides a higher level of quality control.” This continuous development and refinement qualifies Harrop’s reputation for quality products with genuine performance advantages. More recently, Heath and his team have established Harrop Engineering USA in Dayton, Ohio; with a facility providing satellite R&D Engineering, warehousing and distribution for the growing range of Harrop performance products for popular USA enthusiast vehicles. “Our USA business generated a number of exciting opportunities with alternative fuel engine programs which is absolutely a big part of our future,” Heath said. It is an incredibly exciting space, not only for the performance market but also for commercial applications from mining and utility vehicles to local buses – there’s always going to be those sorts of speciality vehicles that require a tailored powertrain solution.” Heath explained. There is little doubt that Harrop Engineering is a genuine Australian success story. With its proven philosophy of delivering solutions based on excellence in design and manufacturing, the future looks bright for this iconic Australian brand with a history of success both on and off the track. GATES INCREASES BATHURST PRESENCE

The Bathurst 1000 provided a fitting end to Gates Australia’s long partnership with Andre Heimgartner With Repco the new major sponsor for the Bathurst 1000, Gates Australia had an increased presence at the 2021 event. Gates Australia had prominent track signage as well as some retro arcade gaming machines in the activation area at the 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000, where attendees could play video games and also enter the draw to win one of four of the retro arcade gaming machines valued at $1,850 each. After not being able to attend the last couple of years, it was with excitement that a number of the Gates Australia Automotive Team were on-track to enjoy the event and got to indulge in a number of unique VIP experiences, including: • Sneak Peak of the next Gen3 Supercars • Pit Lane function • Team Garage Tours • Hot laps around Bathurst • Pre-race grid walks When it came to the racing, Gates Australia sponsored driver Andre Heimgartner and the Kelly Grove Racing Team battled hard throughout the race and despite a myriad of technical difficulties, Andre still delivered an admirable 19th place in

the race, bringing his overall end of year ranking to 17th place in the driver standings. With the conclusion of the 2021 Supercars Championship, the long-standing partnership between driver Andre Heimgartner and Gates Australia also came to an end. In 2022 Andre is moving to a new team to continue his Supercar career, whilst Gates Australia will continue its sponsorship of the Grove Racing Team, and driver David Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth. Gates Australia commenced sponsoring Andre a number of years ago when he started racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup – a proposal sent to Gates by his mother requesting sponsorship was enough to invest in the then young up-and-coming driver. After several successful years in the support categories, Gates Australia followed Andre to a full-time Supercars driver position at Kelly Racing in 2018, replacing the legendary driver and team principal, Todd Kelly. DJR BECOMES FIRST CARBON NEUTRAL SUPERCARS TEAM DJR is carbon neutral for 2020 and 2021 and will continue to work to reduce its emissions Dick Johnson Racing has become the first carbon neutral Supercars team and attained the FIA’s highest level of Three Star Environmental Accreditation, cementing its place as an industry leader on and off the track. To become carbon neutral, DJR engaged Colin Trinder, a Certified Environmental Practitioner with extensive experience in environmental management in motorsport, natural resource management and defence sectors. He has previously guided Motorsport Australia to attaining Three Star FIA Environmental Accreditation as well as leading the environment program for Rally Australia in Coffs Harbour to deliver a carbon neutral event. Colin calculated DJR’s greenhouse gas emissions for their 2020 base year and worked with the Team to establish their Environmental Management Plan and Quality Management System. In July 2021 DJR’s Environmental Policy was finalised, which identified the following key priorities for the Team:

1. Increasing recycling and reducing waste going to landfill from DJR’s operations; 2. Shifting to 100 percent renewable energy. 3. Funding new renewable energy projects which help offset DJR’s greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Reducing total energy use in its business operations and freight logistics. These four initiatives combine to substantially reduce and completely offset any carbon emissions from DJR’s entire operations, creating net zero emissions. While these initiatives make DJR carbon neutral, the team has also been working to improve habitats and enhance the recovery of biodiversity by restoring sustainable native forests and bushland. For each team member, DJR is planting the number of trees needed to completely offset their annual per capita average greenhouse gas emissions. In total, over 17,000 trees have been planted – 5,100 in Australia with Trees For Life and to date 12,220 trees planted in Nepal, India, Tanzania, Mozambique and Madagascar with Tree-Nation.

DJR will plant 1,700 trees per annum in an ongoing commitment to Trees for Life. Further, from 2022, with each merchandise purchase, a tree will be planted with Tree-Nation through their Net Zero Product service. One of the team’s engineers, Brad Eyes, has been appointed as DJR’s first Environment and Sustainability Manager and the team will continue to work to reduce emissions and maintain its carbon neutral status as part of its commitment to its FIA Environmental Accreditation. The team is also a member of the Australian Sports Environmental Alliance. For more information, visit https://environment.djr.com.au

AUSTRALIAN MOTORSPORT IS AN ECONOMIC POWERHOUSE A study recently revealed motorsport’s significant contribution to the Australian economy, with a total gross annual output of $8.6 billion With the national economy looking to rebuild after a difficult two years, Australian motorsport is primed to lead the charge for the sporting industry. Ernst and Young prepared the global study on four-wheeled motorsport together with the FIA and Motorsport Australia, Karting Australia and the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA). Locally, it was found that the motorsport industry provides $3.1 billion in direct output, while providing $5.5 billion of indirect output based on pre-COVID figures. The industry also supported 16,900 direct jobs and a further 29,900 indirect jobs in 2019, the year the study was based on. The sport also enjoyed support from approximately 18,900 unpaid officials and volunteers, creating a total workforce of 65,700. The Ernst and Young study looked at a range of factors, further emphasising the importance of the Australian motorsport industry on the country’s overall economy. Between Motorsport Australia, ANDRA and Karting Australia, the sport has a strong foothold 36

across the country with a reported 188,112 people participating in the sport in 2019. The financial contribution of each competitor and their input to the overall economy is estimated at approximately $20,000 per year on expenses related to their involvement in the sport (not including vehicle purchases) such as travel, maintenance, food and beverages, as well as race meetings. At a state level, New South Wales and Victoria were the biggest contributors in 2019, with the two states responsible for more than 50 percent of the sport’s national economic value with around 97,000 active participants. In 2019, prior to the COVID shutdowns, 9650 events were held throughout the country via the three Governing bodies with events in both rural and metropolitan regions attracting thousands of competitors each week. Given the high level of events, a variety of industries outside of the sport such as tourism, hospitality, retail and entertainment venues at local, state and national levels all benefit from motorsport’s presence, providing a significant and positive impact on a large number of communities. The findings compare favourably to the most

recent survey undertaken in 2014. That survey revealed motorsport had a direct output of $2.7 billion dollars to the Australian economy, highlighting the rapid rise of the sport’s growth, with approximately $400 million more now being spent on an annual basis. With COVID impacting 2020 and 2021, Motorsport Australia, ANDRA and Karting Australia say motorsport has a unique opportunity to play a key role in the economic recovery of Australia, stating that competitors are ready and eager to start racing, travelling and spending in the coming 12 months. WORLD CHAMPION PERFORMANCE What a finish it was for the 2021 Formula One World Championship Max Verstappen clinched the 2021 World Championship on the final lap, of the final race in one of the most frantic and entertaining F1 seasons of the last decade – what a victory it was. For 2021, Red Bull Racing launched out of the starting blocks, all guns ablaze with Max sweeping to victory in five of the first nine races. Clearly, Red Bull had stepped things up. There was no doubt they had the pace to take on the all-conquering Silver Arrows and wrestle the championship away from their death grip. Early in the 2021 season, there were suggestions from some opposition teams that Red Bull may have introduced illegal engine upgrades. However Red Bull’s Team Principle, Christian Horner, along with engine supplier, Honda acknowledged one of the keys to the RB16B’s championship-winning performance was the introduction of a revolutionary new Mobil 1 oil. “We have a new oil from ExxonMobil,” Christian said. “So, I think they can take all the credit….The engines are the same specification.”

“ExxonMobil delivered a revolutionary new oil – that has helped push the team forwards,” ExxonMobil’s Global Motorsport Technology Manager, Tomek Young, said. “New components were incorporated as they were found to offer many benefits, including stronger interactions with metal surfaces and lower friction, helping deliver maximum power while offering protection and fuel efficiency. “These benefits translate into an ability to run the engine across a wider range of operating conditions and not be wound back.” Mobil 1 says this is the advantage of it being a technical partner – not just a brand sponsor. It says it was the same story at the 2021 Repco Bathurst 1000. Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth in their #25 WAU Commodore were blisteringly fast all weekend. The duo topped many of the weekend’s timesheets (never out of the top three), culminating in Chaz dropping it on pole during Saturday’s Top 10 Shootout. While their raw speed was a result of many, many

factors coming together, as WAU’s lubricant supplier, Mobil 1 yet again played a critical role in their outright speed and epic victory in the ‘Great Race’. Mobil 1 sends its congratulations to Max Verstappen, Red Bull Racing, plus Chaz Mostert, Lee Holdsworth, WAU and every other Mobil 1 technical partner across the world of motorsport who visited victory lane in 2021. For 2022, it says things are only going to get better. For Mobil 1 product details, along with distributor and stockist info, call MotorActive on 1800 350 622 or visit www.m1oils.com.au

DAYCO DRIVER AND TEAM FINISHES THIRD AT BATHURST David Russell claimed a breakthrough Bathurst 1000 podium in December After no fewer than 12 attempts at Australia’s greatest motor race, Dayco Ambassador David Russell raced to his first Bathurst 1000 podium in December after a giant-killing third place result with the Erebus Boost Mobile Racing team, partnering outstanding rookie Supercar driver Brodie Kostecki. Starting on the fifth row of the grid, David set the Boost Mobile Commodore up from the start, claiming five spots during his speedy opening stint. Fast forward to lap 94 of the gruelling 161 lap race and David held off multiple Bathurst Champion Craig Lowndes to retain fourth place all the way until his final driver change pitstop, handing the car over to Brodie for the run home. Brodie took his final stop for fuel and tyres on lap 139, moments before a Safety Car was called when Anton De Pasquale’s Mustang stopped at the exit of the Cutting. Shane van Gisbergen and Cameron Waters stopped under yellow flag conditions and ultimately made Brodie and David’s fight for the podium even harder. The Dayco sponsored duo lost track position

despite lapping faster than anyone on the track, with Brodie sensationally chasing down Cameron Waters for third position before taking advantage of an issue with Shane van Gisbergen’s right front tyre. Brodie flew across the top of the mountain and past Shane, narrowly avoiding disaster when he clipped the wall on the way through at The Grate section of the 6.2 kilometre circuit, taking the final podium spot. This outstanding performance by David and Brodie marks the second podium for the Erebus Motorsport team at the Bathurst 1000, (the team won the Great Race in 2017), helping to earn the team fifth place in the 2021 Supercar Teams’ Championship. Long term Dayco Ambassador and one of Australia’s most talented endurance race drivers, David Russell said that this result was like a dream come true. “It is an amazing feeling, this is a race that I grew up watching and wishing to be one of the heroes on the Bathurst podium one day,” David said after the race concluded.

“It has been a long time coming and certainly not from a lack of trying – I’ve had all kinds of devastating things happen here during my career, but I kept chipping away and I finally had a driving combination and team that has made it happen, so I couldn’t be happier. “I fitted in with the Erebus team like family and Brodie was just incredible to race with. This was by far the best car that I have ever driven at Mount Panorama, and it was thrilling to be able to make up positions from the start and hand the car back to Brodie in a strong position to continue the fight for our first Bathurst podium.” For more from Dayco, visit www.dayco.com
