Manifesto

21-22

MODERNISM // POST MODERNISM Modernist Designers and architects rejected the old style of designing based on the natural form and materials. They believed the modern designs should symbolise the new 21st century. Groups were made for the modernist principles like, de stijl, Bauhaus, constructivism etc. The main style of modernism is “Form follows Function”. Post-Modernism is used to criticize the functionalism of modernism movement and to describe the electric new design styles being developed by a whole range contemporary architects and designers. The term post modernism means “after modernism” as the design style is used in a concept way and a deconstructive way. This new design style expresses the design more in a form over function way.

When I think of modernism, I think of cutting edge, new, fresh, and original. When I think of post-modernism, I think of all these things, but with also an added element of irony and/or deeper meaning such as a radical political statement, deconstruction of historical benchmarks, or socio-economic commentary, not that modernism can’t contain these things, but I believe it’s more pronounced in postmodernism. For my layout of the magazine i went for the Post modernism look with hints of Modernism, like the grid system.

Helvetica is a san serif typeface, which is a German style that was popular in the 19th century. Max Meidinger designed Helvetica in 1957 when working for the type foundry in Switzerland. Thereafter, Frankturt based corporation bought the typeface and adapted and developed on it. Helvetica has increased in popularity over the years. Its legibility and versatility have become its trademarks, allowing it to be used for numerous different applications. Helvetica has inspired me to incorporate the typeface into my work and use it as part of my designs, as i think the typeface is simple and effective in many ways.

CITY IN FLUX

Brief - This brief is divided into three parts. The success of the final outcomes depends on how thoroughly you have dealt with all components of the brief. Background The ‘City in flux’ can take many forms in its simplest and most literal form ‘City in flux’ is little more than the layout of the town and the associated directional signage. However, when we apply a more cultural interpretation, then the ‘City in flux ’is more than this alone. It is an integral, multisensory landscape that is realised when many factors inter-relate. The way in which the space is interpreted and perceived. I approached this brief in a more visual way and the use of typography wondered me in cities. The city that i researched was Manchester, as i thought it was a well developed city. The artist that i looked at and inspired me for my final idea was Paula Scher, as her work was mostly the use of typography on large scales.

Brief I am required to submit creative proposals through to finished design/animation for a new version of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled, ‘Earth Artefact’. This does not have to be a slavish reproduction of the original golden record, but could be a more contemporary version, which should be reflected in the content and the format/media channel of my choice. I should document all stages of the research and design process, which should demonstrate a critical understanding of the design challenge. I should be inventive and demonstrate my ingenuity in solving this creative challenge. It is important I generate several creative solutions, taking one justified idea forward to a final solution.

EARTH ARTIFACT

Background The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records, which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecraft’s are not heading towards any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light years of the star AC+79 3888 in the Ophiuchus constellation in about 40,000 years. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting any kind of electromagnetic radiation. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will most likely be far in the future as the nearest star on Voyager 1’s trajectory will only be reached in 40,000 years.

Inner pages of my `earth Arifact book based on Natural Disaster.

EARTH ARTIFACT Natural Disaster was my final idea on this brief as i found that this was a big issue of Earth. I had religion as well as fact about earth as my idea, but eventually it lead onto Natural Disaster. The aim of this was for the awareness of different kind of Natural Disaster and how it could be avoided. I tried different kind of ideas, as researching artists like Lou Romano and Grundini, trying the style that they have created. In the end i created a book of information about the Natural Disaster of Earth. For this i created Front, Back cover, inner pages, Logos and icons.

TYPEFACE

When creating my own typeface I firstly looked at various and different patterns, which i could incorporate into my own unique font. I tried different kind of fonts like cubism and line font, but i thought that this was the best. A spiral staircase inspired me to create a font like the image it self. so i used block lines with thin lines and a spiral at the end.

Design, Make and Achieve

This is my own personal manifesto, which i created and wanted to keep it simple and straight to the point of my views on my personal life of being a graphic designer. The inspiration from this piece comes form researching manifesto, which expresses my motivation, aspiration and morals as a graphics designer.

“If I get up everyday with the optimism that I have the capacity for growth, then that’s the success for me.” - Paula Scher
