Artefact Foundation Studio Practice- TDF1411 Aadam Lambat

I am required to submit creative proposals through to finished design/animation for a new version of the ‘Golden Record’ entitled, ‘Earth Artefact’. This does not have to be a slavish reproduction of the original golden record, but could be a more contemporary version, which should be reflected in the content and the format/media channel of my choice. I should document all stages of the research and design process, which should demonstrate a critical understanding of the design challenge. I should be inventive and demonstrate my ingenuity in solving this creative challenge. It is important I generate several creative solutions, taking one justified idea forward to a final solution. W

Brief

The Voyager Golden Records are phonograph records, which were included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecraft’s are not heading towards any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light years of the star AC+79 3888 in the Ophiuchus constellation in about 40,000 years. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting any kind of electromagnetic radiation. If they are ever found by an alien species, it will most likely be far in the future as the nearest star on Voyager 1’s trajectory will only be reached in 40,000 years.

W “For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk, we learned to listen. Speech has allowed the communication of ideas enabling people to work together ... to build the impossible. Mankind’s greatest achievements have come about by talking ... and its greatest failures by not talking. It doesn’t have to be like this. Our greatest hopes could become reality in the future with the technology at our disposal - the possibilities are unbounded. All we need to do is make sure we keep talking.

Voyager Golden Record The voyager golden record is a phonograph record, which is an analog storage medium. This included aboard both Voyager spacecraft, which were launched in 1977. They contain sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life form, or for future humans, who may find them. The Voyager spacecraft are not heading toward any particular star, but Voyager 1 will be within 1.6 light-years of the star, currently in the constellation Camelopardalis, in about 40,000 years. As the probes are extremely small compared to the vastness of interstellar space, the probability of a space-faring civilization encountering them is very small, especially since the probes will eventually stop emitting electromagnetic radiation meant for communication.

Carl Sagan (an American astronomer) noted that “The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.” Thus the record is best seen as a time capsule.

The Voyager 1 and 2 probes are currently the farthest human made objects from Earth. Voyager 1 has reached interstellar space, the region between stars where the galactic plasma is present. Both probes were launched by NASA with a message aboard, a kind of time capsule, intended to communicate to extraterrestrials a story of the world of humans on Earth.

The golden record is attached to the spacecraft and consists of 116 images and a variety of natural sounds (surf, wind, thunder, animals). also they added musical selection from different cultures and eras and 55 ancient and modern languages. The images are a collection of photographs and diagrams both in black and white and colour. The first images are of scientific interest, showing mathematical and physical quantities, the Solar System and its planets, DNA, and human anatomy and reproduction. Care was taken to include not only pictures of humanity, but also some of animals, insects, plants and landscapes. Images of humanity depict a broad range of cultures. These images show food, architecture, and humans in portraits as well as going about their day-to-day lives. Many pictures are annotated with one or more indications of scales of time, size, or mass. Some images contain indications of chemical composition. All measures used on the pictures are defined in the first few images using physical references that are likely to be consistent anywhere in the universe.

Lou Romano (born April 15, 1972) is an American animation production artist and voice actor. He did design work on Monsters, Inc and The Incredibles, and he provided the voices of Bernie Kropp in The Incredibles, Snot Rod in Cars and Alfredo Linguini in Ratatouille. Romano had an interest in drawing and painting at an early age and studied theater arts. He also studied animation and completed workshops which, later went on to work as an art director and designer for animated projects, such as The Powerpuff Girls and The Iron Giant. In 2000, Romano joined Pixar as the production designer of The Incredibles, for which he won an Annie Award in 2005. His artwork has been exhibited at many Museum of Modern Art and Galleries. I could use Mr Romano work by looking at how he has laid out his illustrated designs. i could use the way he has used 4 rectangular block as a scene of a animation and incorporate that kind of idea into my Earth Artifact idea.

Antoine Corbineau A Multidisciplinary French born Artist worked with major designs and advertising agencies. His work consists of fine art and illustration. his work often colourful and has a more complex view in his work. Using a range of mediums and techniques, Antoine creates beautifully busy patchworks of texture, imagery and creative typography. I could use Antoine work in my idea by the way he has used complexity in his designs and the way he has designed some of his work and use that to incorporate my idea of Earth Artifact.

Grundini

Peter Grundy is a graphic designer and illustrator working with Nilly Northedge. Peter Grundy rather liked the work of her department since it was more about explaining things than selling things which seemed more interesting. In the last year they combined an analytical brief with a creative concept to do the first real G&N project. Idea to make info design interesting, there idea is to do it using simple pictures and symbols a journalist wrote. i could use Peter work by the way he has presented his ideas and the way he has used different block shapes.

I could use Saul Bass work by the way he has designed and laid out his posters. Also the way he has used typography and vibrant colours in my idea, so i could design my own poster like he has.

Idea 1

Welcome to Earth

An introduction to Earth of what kind of people are on earth and describe how humans work and give facts about Earth. This could be done created by having moving images or a animation

Natural Disaster is big issue on planet earth, so this could be an idea on to stay away from these disastrous events and how these disaster is displayed. I could present this idea of Lou Romano and create an illustrative design of the Natural Disasters. This could also be presented by creating a creative book or poster.

Idea 3 Beliefs of earth

Consumerism

Natural Disaster at earth

Many different types of religion and beliefs on earth can be introduced and how each religion portray earth and how there lives are lived. This idea could be displayed by designing a poster on different types of religion.

An idea on how technology has been placed on Earth and how it works, as well as how Technology has been developed and acts like robots in the modern nature of earth.

Idea 4

Technology

A poster of consumerism could be displayed or an animated story board of how people live there lives in these modern days.

Colour Variation

A variation of colours could be used when creating my idea, as it would help me to choose the right colour of that art of idea. This is because using the correct colour would show different understanding of the idea and overall design.
