“You can’t sell a broke business” The Internet is a very powerful entity. AgAir Update uses it to communicate instantly with its readers, as well as offering information 24/7 to ag-pilots around the world in almost any language. However, the Internet can also be a plethora of lies. Occasionally from the Internet, I pick up on a blogger that is spouting off inaccurate information about our industry. I simply can’t help myself when I post a link to their blog through our On the Net feature of agairupdate.com and AgAir Update’s eEdition. On the Net is used primarily to bring ongoing news from the Internet to the industry. Last month a blogger inaccurately described our industry. In a simplistic sentence describing her mental state, she did not want to kill anything, not even an insect. I can imagine her home where roaches live in a protective sanctuary. I posted a link to her blog through On the Net and within a few hours she received 29 comments from our industry. I have no idea what she was told, but I’d be willing to bet afterwards she had a better understanding of life. The blogger sent AgAir Update an email, whining about our posting the link to her blog. It just goes to show if you are going to write something and post it on the Internet, you best be prepared to take the heat. The Internet is an open book and the writer becomes fair game. I had an unusual inquiry the other day.
An operator called and asked my opinion. I was honored that he asked, but I am not sure I was the right person (even though I did have an opinion). The operator has a very successful business using two AT-602s and an AT-502. He is relatively young (47) and obviously had had another banner year. With it being the end of the season, I could tell by the nature of his inquiry he was chronically tired. The operator wanted to sell his business and simply fly for the new owner. This is a perfect example of how much ag-pilots love to fly their aircraft. I’ve often stated that when an operation has three or more aircraft, the owner profits better to fly a desk instead of one of the aircraft. This operator was offering an ideal opportunity. If I wasn’t already very satisfied with my station in life, I would have jumped at the chance to buy this successful operation and “run” it. I had my opinion on what the operator should do which was to “fish” the sell of the business through a blind classified ad in AgAir Update. This would give him an insight to what was out there in the way of what he wanted to accomplish. With three sophisticated ag-aircraft, a couple of hangars, load equipment, etc., it is going to take a considerable amount of cash to buy the business. Who has access through outright cash or borrowing power to buy his business that isn’t already involved in some sort of other business? Maybe
another operator, but not likely a business man looking to change careers. Even though his situation could be a dream come true for someone and himself, it is going to be difficult, at best, to figure out how to put the deal together. He could easily end up having to repossess the business, or even get fired from flying for what used to be his business! Of course the new owner would want a no-compete agreement and that combined with other factors is what makes this move complicated for the operator. Are you wondering, why in the world would a successful and relatively young operator want to sell out? I once had Dennie Stokes of Arkansas tell me right after Stokes Flying Service and MidContinent Aircraft Sales and Service struck a deal; “You can’t sell a broke business.” Those are words you can take to the bank. Until next month, Blue Sky and Tailwinds...

agair mail oil spills Bill good morning. Hope that everything is going well for you. I just received the AgAir Update edition for July and read an article on oil spills by Lawrence Roth. Just wanted to let you know that we in Panama have sprayed oil dispersant on two oil spills and another one on a diesel spill, with very good results. We even did a demonstration at the Panama Canal in coordination with2 a US company. There is a good opportunity there. best regards Carlos Motta El Dorado, Panama Hola Carlos; All is good here. That’s interesting news about you aerially treating oil spills in Panama.
I wonder why your July edition is just now arriving, as it was mailed the last week of June! Please give my fondest regards to Katia, Carlos, Sr. and all the familia!—Bill
new business I have not seen anything about the amount of new business generated the last to late summer spreading cover crops. Might be worth a look. Donald Wirth Tangent, OR Hello Don; Thanks for your suggestion and I surely agree. If you have anything to tell about this new business, I assume spreading alfalfa seed, please pass it on to me. For the “oddest” reason, I just can’t seem to be everywhere, so I am very dependent upon people like yourself for ideas and even articles.
Let me know more what you are thinking. —Bill
facebook Also, I recently became a fan of AgAir Update on Facebook. Can I post something on your wall to notify folks of an M601 Training Course in Cincinnati coming up in October? Thanks, Andy Pierson GE Aviation West Chester, OH Hello Andy; Absolutely you can post, since GE Aviation is an advertiser. Also, you can go to www.agairupdate.com and click on our interactive calendar and post the info there as well. If you’ll send me the info today, I’ll place it in our printed edition! I’ll also make sure it is in our next eEdition, depending on when is the course date. Don’t hesitate to call on AAU for GE Aviation needs.—Bill

I just wanted to say that I enjoy reading your website and newspaper! As a newbee in the industry, it has been a great source of information. I just ended my first season and I wish I’d started this career years ago! After many years of flying corporate/airlines, I was nervous about making the change. Glad I did. I would like to give my thanks to Billy Howell, of Ag-Flight, Inc. I attended his school in June 2010 and his instructors broke me of my bad habits. Going from jet powered nosedraggers to slow-n-low tail draggers takes a few adjustments! Not having a job lined up, I was surprised when Billy called me a week after school about a job spraying mosquito/ grasshoppers. It was a great first seat opportunity! Thanks!! Thanks again to you for the great info and I can’t wait to find a seat for next season!! Fly safe, Keith Larson Peoria, AZ
Hello Keith; Good for you, landing a seat in ag. As you know, that’s a tough nut to crack. Thanks for the compliments. —Bill
paper An open letter to Edward Jones financial/investment company. Dear Edward Jones; I only wanted to write that in the latest “Investment Perspective” the reference to saving trees, planting up to 10,000, for “Make a Statement” giveaway, simply hurts the credibility of EJ. How does less paper mean more trees? Are you not aware that trees, such as pine, are grown specifically for the manufacture of paper? Do you not realize the hardwoods you are so unnecessarily concerned over are not used for paper? Do you realize how such an inaccurate statement makes EJ look? Should I invest with a company that does not take the time to research where paper comes from? Think about it. Bill Lavender / AgAir Update /Client Dear Mr. Lavender, Thank you for your email and taking the time to share your feedback. I will forward your email to our marketing leaders for review. Best regards, Carolyn Miller Online Support Editor’s note: Ya just gotta try to reach these people. I did the same with HGTV about similar comments. I’m not taking the credit, but you don’t hear it any more from HGTV.
Denny O’Hara My name is Jody Wood and I am owner-operator of Wood Flying, Inc. in Texas. We are a two-turbine spraying business. I read AgAir Update religiously. I am writing to tell you about a pilot that flies with me. His name is Denny O’Hara. Denny is a 30-year seasoned crop duster who has an air ambulance and charter business in Amarillo. I flagged for Denny as
a high school kid growing up. We reacquainted and now he flies for me! If you’d like to meet a man who loves to fly a spray plane, then you need to meet Denny. He is type rated in a Citation V and turns down trips to fly charter so he can spray with me. If you ever consider writing an article about someone who truly loves the game, I would like for you to contact me. Denny is 63 and in good health. He says he hopes he can spray forever. Thanks for your time. Sincerely, Jody Wood Panhandle, TX Hello Jody; Thanks for the compliments. It’s a labor of love, AAU. Stopping in for an article about Denny and Wood Flying, Inc. is a great idea. Actually, I will be your way November 8, on my way to the CoAAA convention, Wx permitting. After the convention that ends Thursday a.m., I am scheduled to be in Midland on Thursday afternoon, November 11, again, Wx permitting with Friday as bad Wx day. Do you think Denny and you could
be available Monday, November 8?—Bill Editor’s Note: The visit is scheduled. Now, if the Wx will cooperate...
article Bill. Thanks so much for the extra copies. Chris is a very modest chap but I feel sure that he and his wife Sibyl will appreciate the copies which I am forwarding to them. I must say what a very good journal you are producing. I was very interested in the 1968 world-wide ag statistics. Even little New Zealand was doing quite well... as compared with the other vast countries. Cheers and regards, Mike Feeney Hamilton, New Zealand PS: The recent photo is of veteran 32,000-hour Super Air pilot Derek Williams (still ag flying) on the left and myself. We were at the annual Tiger Moth Club fly-in at Taumarunui. Derek has a AT-6 Texan/Harvard. Derek and I were sitting our Commercial Pilot Licence exams in the same room in the late 1950s. Thanks for the compliments, Mike. Also,

Also, a check is in the mail to you for my tardy registration. As for the Friday before the convention, just bring ya self and ya friends. I don’t know how many will be attending AAU’s Open House and Hangar Party, but it will be strict RSVP, so I can plan on how many to feed and provide beverages. There will be an announcement in the next few days on our FaceBook/Twitter pages, eEdition and in print that AAU will be hosting an Open House and Hangar Party Friday afternoon and evening with live music. I can’t entertain my Arkansas buds without asking the rest of my crop dusting friends!—Bill P.S. - We have a large parking area for motor homes with eight / 110V outlets passing through a single, 50amp breaker on one side of the hangar and a couple of 110V / 20-amp outlets on the other side. Hopefully, that will handle the motor homes. If not, there are hook ups for power-only about 500 feet to the south of AAU’s hangar. And, there is a shower (nice enough for the ladies) and four bathrooms in the hangar that will be available. —Bill

whole story Hey Bill In reference to “agair mail” 1st seat, from Jeff Christie don’t you think you were a little rough on the kid? He was just asking your opinion. First of all, we have had many “pilots” that were graduates of these so-called schools and I agree what a joke. All of the people we have had from these schools were sold a bill of goods. All were good people with good career intentions. I

picture and for most, they can’t help but learn something from attending. Maybe too much emphasis is being put on what is expected by graduating from an ag-av school. When it is looked at with its limitations, I believe it is a worthwhile endeavor. See ya and thanks for your email. It helps me to see both sides of an issue. —Bill
Hello Scott; Mr. Christie has been trying to land a seat for a couple of years and has acquired what appears to be a bit of bitterness in the process. He’s sent me several emails during that time. I disagree with you about the schools and not because they are advertisers. An education is no more than what you make of it. As I’ve often said, and believe, the cost for ag-av school is relatively cheap compared to other higher forms of education. I can’t see any harm in a pilot attending a school. It can’t hurt when compared to nothing. At least it’s probably a good way to find out if ag-av is a career choice, before he picks up stakes and moves somewhere to load a couple of years, get a few hours and then find out he’s not cut out for low level flying or other requirements for the job. The schools do not make an ag-pilot. They are not perfect and can’t possibly be for the tuition charged and the circumstances. I don’t believe any CFI or airline pilot fresh out of school is a qualified pilot for the job, until after he’s accumulated many actual hours “in the field”, hopefully based on his training. That’s not to say that some pilots do just as well without school. There are exceptions. I’m looking at the broader

Generations of Andrews in South Georgia
by Bill Lavender ARLINGTON, GA—The company name, Bruce’s Flying Service, just doesn’t tell the whole story. It does, however, represent three generations of ag-pilots. In reality, the company started over 50 years ago with Fred Andrews flying for Dothan Aviation. In 1953, when Fred was a mere 14 years old, he started flying a J-3 Cub with an 85 HP engine. The Cub was used to carry tools to various airstrips to work on Dothan Aviation’s ag and training aircraft. At the time, Dothan Aviation was operating over 25 ag planes and another 25 trainer aircraft scattered over southwest Georgia and southeast Alabama. After a legal solo flight on his 16th birthday, Fred completed his private and commercial licenses and started ag-flying in 1957 on his 18th birthday. He flew a 220 HP Stearman for liquid applications and a Cub for dusting operations. In 1960, at the age of 21, Fred started flying B-25s for Dothan Aviation treating fire ants with Mirex ant killer. His first flight in the B-25 was solo from Davis Monthem AFB, Arizona to Torrance, California without even a check ride beforehand. Over the course of 16 years
he flew the B-17, Lockheed PV-2s and the C119 Fairchild for the fire ant program. During those years, Fred logged over 1,300 hours in the B-25, often working it from 4,000-foot airstrips. In 1963, Fred left Dothan Aviation’s crop dusting division to fly for Fred Ayres in Blakely, Georgia during the summer and in Boca Raton, Florida during the wintertime. In Boca Raton, he flew some of the first night
operations east of the Mississippi River treating sugar cane. After five years with Ayres, Fred started his own flying service, Precision Dusting Company, with the help of an Arlington farmer. He used two 450 Ag-Cats and two 450 Stearmans. After a year, he dissolved the partnership with the farmer and started his own company, Farm Air Service, Inc. In the beginning, the company operated off a dirt strip with a school bus body for an office. One day a load of 2 x 4 lumber fell off a truck onto the highway. The owner told Fred that he
could have the 2 x 4s if he’d remove them from the road. Fred obliged and built his first real office from those 2 x 4s. Working over the cotton and peanut fields of South Georgia with biplane aircraft, Fred was convinced the monowing Thrush would better suit his needs. In the spring of 1974, with the Thrush factory only a few miles away, Fred went to his old friend, Fred Ayres (who was a Thrush dealer at the time) and bought a new 600 HP Thrush and an almost new year-old one. Three years later, Fred bought one of the first factory Turbo Thrushes with a PT6A-34 engine. However, during the late 1970s, operating a turbine aircraft was not what it should have been, with it being particularly difficult to find someone to work on the engine. He sold the turbine and 600 HP Thrushes and replaced them with two factory Bull Thrushes. Both were powered by the 1,000 HP Wright Cyclone R-1820. “Buying those Bulls was the biggest mistake of my life,” explained Fred. “The engine would literally shake apart the airframe. If you reduced the power too quick on landing, you were assured of a warped valve. It leaked and burned more oil than I could keep in 55-gallon drums,

not to mention gulping down 85 gallons an hour of fuel.” After trying unsuccessfully to make the Bull Thrush a workable solution for Farm Air, Fred returned to the proven 600 HP S2R Thrush in the early 1990s. For three years, 1988-1990, Farm Air also operated a “Poor Man’s Turbine” on boll weevil eradication contracts. This aircraft was a Cessna Ag-Truck with an IO-720 Lycoming engine. It was calibrated for boll weevil applications at 150 MPH. Farm Air moved to its current location in 1976. At that time, Fred built a stateof-the-art loading facility, complying with EPA’s wishes (although there were no published guidelines to follow). Eight years later the Department of Natural Resources decided the load site was not suitable and ordered him to dispose of it. After several years of contesting, he relented and built the concrete load pad in use today that collects the rinsate that is later dispersed by recycling with the appropriate chemicals, then applied. 1995 is when things changed at Farm Air Service, Inc. Fred had his brother, Eddie Andrews and his son, Bruce Andrews, flying with him. Bruce had started flying at Farm Air in 1981, while Eddie started in 1982 after working as an A&P at Dothan Aviation. After more than 25 years in business, Fred decided to dissolve Farm Air Service, Inc. Bruce stepped in and formed Bruce’s
Flying Service. He hired his sister, Tammy Andrews, to run the office and manage the work schedule. Fred and Eddie stayed on, along with Bruce, as pilots. He promptly outfitted the company with a new TPE331-6 powered 400-gallon Thrush that the company still operates today. It is flown by Bruce’s son, Patrick Andrews, who started ag-flying for Bruce’s Flying Service in 2007 piloting an Ag-Cat. Additionally, two 510-gallon TPE331-10 Thrush are now part of the fleet. Each aircraft uses AG-NAV GPS units with AutoCal flow controls and CP Products nozzles. Fifteen years later, Bruce’s Flying Service keeps busy treating corn, peanuts, soybeans, cotton and pecan trees. The corn, peanuts and soybeans typically receive five GPA. Cotton application rates are between 1.5 - 2 GPA, unless it is a foliar feed, which requires a higher application rate. Bruce’s Flying Service works for about 60 farmers with many of them farming as many as 6,000 to 7,000 acres. The large-acre farms are the result of a consolidation over the years of smaller farms. Applications are flown from two main bases, Arlington and Shellman, Georgia,
along with two satellite bases in the Leary, Georgia area. All landing strips are outfitted with permanent fuel tanks, load pads and mixing rigs. The company also has a gooseneck trailer fully rigged for remote operations.
In years past, 2006 through 2009, Bruce worked gypsy moth contracts for the private sector and the state of Pennsylvania. In 2007 and 2008, he flew over corn applying fungicide in Ohio and Nebraska. Along with treating crops in southwest Georgia, Bruce’s Flying Service provides maintenance and sells parts for agaircraft from a newly added 70’ x 80’ addition to the maintenance shop. The company specializes in wing spar repair

and replacement, along with rebuilding the Thrush main landing gear. Also, Bruce travels to Central America where he does annual inspections, including wing spars, for his Thrush customers. In the 21st century, it is becoming more common to find three-generation ag-operations. When one is found, it is usually a very successful operation, attested to the fact that in most cases it started with the first generation and survived through the next two, which is often 30-50 years of being in business.
Bruce’s Flying Service originated from a three-generation background of ag-flying. Fred Andrews started the basis for the company in 1960s. Over the years, he brought in his family to help, including his wife, Glenda and daughter, Tammy, to make sure of his success. Brother Eddie, son Bruce and grandson Patrick, leave little need for Fred to climb in and out an ag-plane these days except for standing by, ready to fly.
Tammy and Glenda Andrews take care of the office administrative and scheduling duties that sometimes include fixing a homecooked meal in the office kitchen.

Jelly Jars to ANRs Hearing is second only to vision as a sensory means of obtaining critical information during aircraft operation. In the early days of aviation, though, our knowledge of how noise affects hearing was as limited as our noise reduction technology. An Air Force Research Laboratory study notes the first hearing protection efforts included cotton or even chewing gum, and that the first headsets were “basically jelly jars dipped in rubber and put on a headband.” Fortunately, hearing protection methods and technologies have improved significantly.
a noisy world Hearing damage occurs when loud sound destroys tiny hair cells in the inner ear. These cells convert sound waves
into electrical impulses, which are sent to the brain. You experience hearing loss when 25 to 30 percent of these cells disappear. Daily exposure to high noise levels can cause hearing impairment. The average office can generate around 50 decibels (dB), and the cockpit of a small single-engine airplane exposes you to 70 to 90 dB. Experts generally agree that an acceptable noise level is about 65 to 70 dB, the level of normal conversation. Researchers have also found increased risk of hearing loss among people who listen to loud music through headphones for extended periods of time. Personal music players can give you a sound exposure as high as 100 to 120 dB. When you are using earbuds, the sound is more concentrated because it travels a very short distance to your eardrum.

protecting your hearing
The most important thing you can do is to limit your exposure to noise. Be mindful of volume and duration when listening to music through headphones or earbuds. For flying, you might want to use several forms of hearing protection. Your options include: Passive ear protection.
Ear plugs made of acoustic foam work well against mid- and high frequency noise, but do not block lowfrequency noise generated by engines, motors, and fans. Low frequency noise waves are longer, travel farther, and can penetrate passive barriers. Noise attenuating headsets. These devices use thick gel or foam ear pads to muffle noise. Noise attenuating headsets use clamping action to keep the foam or gel seal tight against your head, but glasses can reduce the effectiveness by breaking the airtight seal. Active Noise Reduction (ANR ) technology. This is more expensive, but it offers the only effective way to attenuate low-frequency noise. Also
known as electronic noise cancellation (ENC) or active noise cancellation (ANC), ANR works by electronically coupling a noise wave with its exact mirror image. This process cancels the noise. Combination of protection devices. The combination of earplugs with earmuffs or communication headsets is recommended when ambient noise levels are above 115 dB.

Equivalent airstrip length calculator for slopes to 20% by Mike Feeney The history of this simple graph goes back to 1981 when, working for the NZ Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport, I devised a similar ‘user-friendly’ means for pilots to quickly determine to what extent airstrip slope increased its effective operational length. It was published in articles I wrote for their “Flight Safety” journal and was primarily intended as an aid for the training of pilots undergoing specialised flight instruction for an Agricultural Pilot Rating. In this respect it was useful, but I had been over-cautious and had ‘padded’ the curves somewhat. This also became evident when I used it in PNG during the 1990s on accident investigation duties, and when doing some other work with the carrier MBA/Airlines of PNG. In the early 2000s, I joined Wanganui Aero Work, a large NZ operator of
fixed-wing agricultural aircraft and Part 135 helicopters. In my role as as Quality Assurance and Safety Manager, I was involved in airstrip standards, including advising clients on improvement methods and, on a few occasions, the siting and works planning for new airstrips. At this time, there were no country-wide standards for farm airstrips; particularly for the increasing number of heavy turbo-prop aircraft which are unable to economically operate ftom many of the historic strips which suited types such as the Fletcher FU-24, DHC-2 Beaver, Cessna 188 Agwagon etc. When the NZCAA were working on their publication “Safety Guideline Farm Airstrips and Associated Fertiliser Cartage, Storage and Application” (aka “The Guideline”), I made detailed submissions and had a couple of meetings with their people after examining the various drafts over some

years before it was eventually published. I provided them with considerable take-off performance data which I had gathered during much time spent on airstrips observing and measuring during PAC Cresco and Fletcher FU-24-400 operations at high weights. Anyway, it is a long story, but I donated my graph and other data. The graph which you see here is published in the Guideline document. As many pilots operate their private aircraft into sloping rural airstrips, this may well prove of interest to them. If you are not sure how to work out the gradient of an airstrip, there is an easy method which you can use. Simply note your altimeter reading at the top and bottom of the strip (or you could use your GPS if you are viewing several satelites), then walk out the length and use the old formula: Height difference divided by strip length (both in the same units of course) and multiply by 100. Example for a typical airstrip: Airstrip length = 1,300 feet. Height difference = 90 feet = 90/1,300 = 6.923....7% for practucal purposes. An example for a really steep ag. strip: 150/800 = 18.75 % (5% is about 3 degrees) When you look at the 20% slope on the graph, you may think it does not appear to be that steep. Let me assure
you that when you are approaching such an airstrip, particualarly with a tailwind which is quite normal during ag. operations, it will appear to be much fore-shortened and not to be attempted without training by an experienced person. I have operated from strips steeper than 20% and, until one gets used to them, they appear rather daunting indeed. In the earlier days with under-powered aircraft, such as the Fletcher FU-24-225 and 240 bhp models, you needed to touch down well up the strip and keep moving to reach the loading area as it might prove very difficult to taxi up. I do recall having to keep the power well up in the FU-24 to prevent the aircraft falling back onto its tail, then carefully turning to take off again and make another attempt. But I was new to the Fletcher then and soon learned to be much more ‘aggressive’ and just fly straight at the strip face, get the nose coming up, and up, and up whilst pouring on the power as one touched down looking up at the sky. Most exhilerating indeed! Recalling the periods when I was training new chums into steep strips, I was very wary of those pilots who were overly ‘timid’. Some had a strong tendency to ‘stalk’ the airstrip and get too low and too slow, ending up using far too much power just to make the threshold thus leaving themselves with
little reserve with which to execute the transition needed to equal the strip slope during the flare. This was particularly pronounced at the high altitude strips in PNG. The look on their faces when they went for more power and found that the throttle was already wide open! For take-off, one carefully selected an aiming point in the distance, opened
to max. power and simply fell off the loading area into space....but woe betide you if you failed to use the same aiming target each take-off. The effect of gravity is non-linear and is a function of the sine of the airstrip slope. For example: Slope 12 degrees = sin 12 = 0.20791 = about one fifth of
the aircraft’s weight will be the vertical component. So if the aircraft weighs 5,000 lbs., then acceleration will be enhanced by the equivalant of 1,000 lbs of thrust. This equates to another 300 bhp. In the case of a 400 bhp FU-24 this is a large help as this aircraft has a static thrust of about 1,500 lbs. And so an overloaded FU-24-400 might haul a tonne from a 250 metre steep strip, but needs close to 500 metres from a level grassed surface. Let’s look at an extreme ridiculous example. Say the strip has a slope of 80 degrees; virtually vertical. The sine of 80 degrees is 0.98481...near enough to unity. So the acceleration force will be the weight of the aircraft plus the propeller thrust. That is 32 foot per second, per second, plus thrust (ignoring drag). Flying airspeed will be attained in a few seconds but is the take-off distance really almost zero? It all depends on how we define take-off distance. I define it for sloping airstrips as that distance which is required to lift off and reach such an airspeed as will enable the aircraft to sustain flight clear of ground effect and attain at least level flight. As you rocket off the end of a steep
strip, you have an increasing rate of descent until you can execute the energy exchange required to attain level flight. This eats up distance with a heavy aeroplane. With our near-vertical strip case, the real take-off distance will be considerable...unless you want to just keep on diving. And there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’. Even on moderate slopes you become airborne well below your starting point due to the tradeoff. If you need to climb to your target spreading area, you will burn a lot more fuel to make up for the so-called ‘free ride’! The graph you see here is not a “legal” item of performance data. It is a guide only, but has been seen by many ag. pilots none of whom has advised that it is significantly in error. As I said earlier, it is a result of a huge number of directly observed take-offs by overloaded ag. aircraft; and, naturally, from my own ag. and ‘bush’ flying experience. I believe it will interest many GA pilots and is certainly better than having no information at all. Hemisphere GPS announces HQ™ asset tracking system Scottsdale, Arizona — Hemisphere GPS announced the release of HQ – a real-time web-based asset tracking tool that allows companies to track the position and position-related data of aircraft and other assets, such as spotter vehicles and loader trucks. Combining an Iridium® satellite modem or cellular modem with Hemisphere GPS’ own M3™ or IntelliStar™ aerial guidance system, HQ provides the ability to more effectively coordinate flight plans, resulting in reduced time and costs. Initially targeted at firefighting, forestry, and agricultural customers, HQ is ideally suited for companies that need to track multiple aircraft in flight at the same time. The Hemisphere GPS-managed web server stores all flight and asset information, allowing customers to view current flight data as well as all historical data from previously completed flights.
Aerial application companies can also provide their customers the access to log in via the web interface to view spray on/ off, spray rates, latitude/longitude, and other information to quickly analyze what jobs are being done and when. The HQ web interface allows real-time monitoring of aircraft to ensure aircraft are moving and in their proper locations. A USB cell modem is an alternative option to the satellite modem but may have limitations due to cellular coverage and signal loss issues. Aerial application companies will realize greater efficiency and safety through improved flight planning and better ground crew preparation. Applications are more effective and input costs are reduced significantly as a dispatcher can better direct the aircraft to avoid duplicate or inaccurate applications. Viewing real-
time information and being able to review previous flight data also allows companies to verify work is being done, giving them an upper hand in competitive contract bids. “HQ combines GPS and web-based mapping tools taking flight management to a new level,” says Greg Guyette, Director of Sales & Marketing, Air Products at Hemisphere GPS. “Aerial customers will appreciate the simple layout of the user interface to track and manage their entire fleet and assets. The benefits of HQ are so significant and quickly realized that aircraft fleet managers will demand it.” HQ is currently available through the Hemisphere GPS Air Products global dealer network. Savvy thinking Is it true that someone should change their communication style on behalf of the person they are speaking to? Communication styles differ across cultures, regions, personality preferences and even departments.
Being aware of potential differences between how you normally communicate, and how whoever receiving your communication communicates, makes you savvy. You do not need to change your style as much as you may wish to explain it, and to allow the style of others to be
present in the communication sequence, and understood by you. For instance if I am an extraverted thinker, I may communicate my thoughts out loud, not because I think everyone should consider them, but because that is how my personality processes. If my receiver is an introverted thinker, they may hear my thoughts and assume they are the result of a lot of thinking and reflection, rather than my way of processing and thinking out loud. An introverted thinker reveals their thoughts out loud only after much reflection and as more of a result. If these two people do not “get” what the communication difference means, misunderstanding may occur. So you do not need to change your method but inform whoever you are communicating with how your style may affect their understanding, and try also to understand how their style may influence your understanding of them as well. www.tero.com

Kixor herbicide technology from BASF crop protection to aid in the fight ®
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC—Nearly 60 percent of farmers who responded to a recent national poll said they are changing their weed management plans to deal with growing glyphosate resistance. The poll, conducted by BASF Crop Protection, showed that a similar percent of farmers are adding a preemergent herbicide with residual control to battle stubborn weeds such as ragweed, marestail, lambsquarters and waterhemp. “Lambsquarters are coming through higher rates of glyphosate, leaving weed pressure and competition in fields later in the season,” said one grower in the national poll. While only 23 percent of respondents believe glyphosate resistance will impact their yield this growing season, the poll confirms that many farmers believe they need to take action now to overcome the threat of yield-robbing glyphosate resistant weeds in the future.
A Purdue University study conducted in 2005-2006 found 40 to 47 percent of growers indicated that tank-mixing glyphosate with residual herbicides, or including alternate herbicides with different modes of actions would be effective management practices for minimizing weed resistance. Five years later the BASF poll confirms that a majority of farmers are putting those ideas into practice. “Growers are looking for new herbicide chemistry to fill in the gap where glyphosate is falling short,” said Dr. Dan Westberg, Technical Market Manager for BASF. “BASF is leading the way in addressing resistance with new chemistries like Kixor® herbicide technology, the most successful herbicide launch in more than 20 years.” Kixor family of products is the first and only herbicide in the United States in the pyrimidinedione family. This unique chemistry provides broad-spectrum
control of broadleaf weeds including ALS, triazine and glyphosate resistant biotypes. Kixor provides burndown and soil activity across a wide range of crops, making it one of the most flexible and versatile herbicide technologies on the market. Despite widespread acknowledgement
among agricultural experts about herbicide resistance, 40 percent of farmers who answered the poll plan to increase the use rate of glyphosate or the number of post-emergent applications from last year, creating conditions that are ripe for development of resistance. “Relying too heavily on one mode

“a walk with God by Bill Lavender Ken Peterson is an ag-pilot operator in Staples, Minnesota. Ken is not your typical ag-pilot. Not only does he fly ag and run an ag-business, Ken has also written a book. Like many authors, Ken was inspired and motivated to write his book. The story starts long before his writing efforts. Ken grew up on a Minnesota farm watching crop dusters. He took flying lessons in high school and later attended the University of Minnesota Crookston earning his Associate in Applied Science degree in Agricultural Aviation with much of the flying taught by Larry Leake. His first ag seat was with Benson Flying Service in Benson in 1980. Later, Ken flew for Gary Oleen in Morris, who he bought out in 1986. After running his own flying service in Morris for 13 years, Ken sold this part of the company to Kyle Scott in 1996 so that he could move his family to Staples, where he now operates Peterson Aerial Spraying.
uses the helicopter in conjunction with the Thrush. Peterson Aerial Spraying is located in potato country of Minnesota. Three major customers make up 70% of the flying for the company. Potatoes are treated every five days for about 12-18 applications starting in mid-May and ending the third week of September. Typical application rates are five gallons per acre. The balance of the flying is
(L-R) Daughter Kayla, Ken, son Jared, Julie and family friend and ground ops helper, Hannah Landecker in front of the Peterson Aerial Spraying hangar in Staples, Minnesota with the Thrush and Hiller aircraft.
Ken started his business in Morris with a radial Ag-Cat. He advanced to a turbine Ag-Cat in 1995, then in 1996 to a new Turbo Thrush with a TPE-331-10 engine bought from Mid-Continent Aircraft in Missouri. Four years later, with about 3,000 hours on the engine, Ken had a catastrophic engine failure that caused the aircraft to crash, totaling it. He replaced it with a used 1999 TPE-331-10 Thrush that he bought from an operator in Georgia. Ken still uses that aircraft today. In 2005, Ken realized he was losing business because he did not have a helicopter for spraying. With only 18 hours of helicopter experience (Robinson), Ken bought a Hiller, hired an instructor that helped him earn his helicopter rating on January 27, 2006. Now Ken

Ken Peterson and the wall board used to track potato spraying. over soybeans and edible beans. Ken believes Staples is too far north for an economical response to corn fungicide applications. Field size and customer demand determines which aircraft is used; the helicopter or the Thrush. The helicopter is capable of covering about 100 acres an hour, while the Thrush can cover 160 acres in an hour. Ken flies both aircraft and can’t tell much difference in the application quality. However, a day of flying in the open cockpit of the helicopter is much harder than a day in the air-conditioned cockpit of the Thrush. While Ken is busy flying the helicopter or Thrush, his wife of 28 years, Julie, is managing the office duties. The importance of her role in the business and Ken’s life is aptly described in Ken’s book, “a walk with God”. Ken grew up in the Catholic faith. In his early adult years, Ken admits leading a life of sin and the toll that lifestyle took upon him. “a walk with God” tells Ken’s story in his words about how he came to grips with his shortfalls, saved his marriage and business and strengthened his relationship with God. In it, Ken describes encounters with God and how they shaped his life, how he survived more than one ag-aircraft crash and the challenges of running an ag-spraying service out of and in the graces of God. Whether you are a religious person or not, reading Ken’s book gives you an ag-pilot’s inside perspective of breaking and making it in the agaviation business. You can order the book directly from Ken with an email to: kpflyboy1@yahoo.com, or search Amazon.com for “a walk with God” by Ken Peterson.

hands-on flying
Tracy Thurman thurmantracyt@yahoo.com
Of trailer parks and power lines In the Southwest we have our share of “retirement villas”. That’s a fancy term for trailer parks. It seems that every trailer park has at least one crazy lady.
The mere sight of a yellow airplane will send some of them into fits beyond explanation. One quaint but somewhat rundown
trailer park is surrounded by lettuce fields. The east side is guarded by a double set of the biggest, meanest, airplane-hungry power lines the country has to offer. I dreaded the scheduled application. That day the air was hot and muggy, unsettled and stingy. With a full load, the airplane flew like a wet sponge. I circled the field and noted the wires and trailers. I was spraying forty acres a quarter-mile north of the park with the monster wires along the edge. My choices were to contend with the wires or be a little safer and risk nicking the airspace over the trailer park. It was not a hard decision. I gambled on flying near the trailer park. I kept the airplane in as tight as I could, flew my turns high and wide. However, sure enough, I looked down the length
of the wing and there below was about a third of the trailer park passing under. “Oh boy,” I thought. “Here we go.” Not long after I returned to the airstrip the phone rang and the grainy voice of a lady asked, “Are you the crop duster that’s been flying over my house?” “Yes, ma’am,” I admitted knowing I was about to get an earful. “You scared my little dog!” She shouted. “I hope you are happy!” I thought I had heard just about every crazy lady story in the book, until that one. I tried to be as polite as possible and even considered trying to explain about the wires, but just apologized instead. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I hope the little fella gets to feeling better.” This gave her an opportunity to explain in detail about her pet. She spoke every word as

if describing a misbehaving child. “His name is Mr. Tiffany and he’s a Pekinese. He gets upset very easily and your airplane scares him.” She went on to explain a lot more than I cared to know, while on the phone burning fuel and time. (Did she say, Mr. Tiffany?) I consider myself a fairly openminded guy. I am certainly an animal lover. Heck, I even like cats.
However, a gay, hypochondriac lap dog who’s scared of his own shadow is almost more than I can take. “I’m sorry, ma’am. I’ll try to be more careful from now on.” I hung up the phone not knowing whether to laugh or cry. A week later I was scheduled to spray the same field again. The conditions weren’t any better, but I dove in heading east. The wires loomed ahead in the

haze like a giant high voltage spider web rushing at me at 130 MPH. I pulled up and the airplane staggered and groaned as I finally cleared the top wire and pushed the nose over to recover some airspeed. I “white knuckled” the aircraft around in a wide, shallow turn, nursing my angle of attack for airspeed and as much lift as possible.
As I dove over the wires to make my second pass, I experienced a loud whop on the windscreen. I instinctively ducked, then looked up to a view of the insides of a bird plastered on it. If that had happened while I was flying towards the wires, it might have been just enough of a distraction to put me right in the middle of them. I decided right then it wasn’t worth it. Mr. Tiffany was just going to have to get over it and the crazy lady could call whomever she chose. There comes
a time when the safety and security of yours truly becomes more important than a pansy Pekinese. I cleared my GPS, set up a north-south pattern and went to work. I tried to avoid the trailer park airspace for fear of riling anybody else. I already knew Mr. Tiffany would be in a terrible state of mind. When the call came with threats involving the FAA, the local veterinarian, and a carpet cleaning company, I simply explained I would operate the aircraft in the safest way possible and perhaps she should consider getting a braver dog. Not one of my best PR moments, but it made me feel a little better. When I got home that night, I wrapped my arms around the big fury neck of my sixty-five pound mutt and wrestled him to the floor. We shared a peanut butter sandwich and discussed the day’s events. I thanked the man upstairs for a safe return home and a good dog. Mr. Tiffany, indeed!

wing and a prayer
God’s amazing love and grace “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever” (2 Peter 3:18). The threads of God’s love and grace are woven throughout the Old and New Testament. It is impossible to understand God’s plan for humanity, or what He has told us in His Word, without understanding that God’s grace flows out of His love. God’s love and grace have always been, and always will be, a natural part of God’s character. God’s love and grace, as described in the Bible, is the reason Christianity is different from all other religions and cults that exist on this planet. It is impossible to describe Christianity without understanding God’s love and grace toward humanity.
When a Christian gets a biblical perspective of God’s love and grace, it will revolutionize their thinking and their lifestyle. “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). God created Adam and Eve and told them they could eat of every tree in the garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Adam and Eve disobeyed God and lost their intimate relationship with God. God had every right to destroy them at the very moment they sinned against
“Where Quality and Customer Service are First Priority.”
Him. Instead of destroying them, God demonstrated His love and grace toward them by sacrificing an animal and giving Adam and Eve animal skins to cover their nakedness. God didn’t take Enoch into the heavens because Enoch was perfect, but because Enoch lived his life to please God and God rewarded Enoch with His love and grace. When God gave Noah the wisdom and strength to build the ark, He didn’t do it because Noah lived a perfect life, but because Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6:8). “The Lord gives grace and glory; no good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, how blessed is the man who trusts in You!” (Psalm 84:11-12).
David was a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14), but David was far from perfect. It was God’s love and grace toward David that moved God to have Samuel anoint David to be the future king of Israel. It was God’s love and grace that directed the stones that David released from his sling toward the giant named Goliath. David disobeyed God when he fell for Satan’s temptation to number the people. David became prideful and ordered Joab to number the people. God was displeased with David and sent the prophet Gad to tell David that he had three choices; three years of famine, three months of defeat by their enemies or three days at the hand of the Lord . David said, “I am in great distress; please let me fall into the hand of the

Lord, for His mercies are very great. But do not let me fall into the hand of man” (2 Samuel 24:13). David understood that God’s love and grace are far more merciful than man’s judgment. The Law of Moses teaches that a person who is guilty of the sin of adultery or murder is to be put to death. David became guilty of both of these sins when he committed adultery with Bathsheba and then had her husband placed in a position so he would be killed in battle. It was God’s love and grace that allowed David to live after violating these laws of God. Nathan the prophet told David, “The Lord has taken away your sin; you shall not die.” But even God’s love and grace toward David didn’t allow God to let David totally get away with these terrible sins he had committed. God allowed evil to come against David’s house for the rest of his life (Read 2 Samuel 11-12). This is a good lesson for every Christian to learn from. Even though nothing can separate us from God’s love and grace (Romans 8:36-39), God has every right to discipline every disobedient Christian (Hebrews 12:4-11). Paul wrote, “What do you have that

their love and grace toward humanity. How will we know that we are growing in God’s love and grace? There are several things we will notice in our lives; we will never be satisfied in our personal spiritual growth—we will continually want more. We will find ourselves more interested in God’s truth than we are in denominationalism. We will be tempted less by the things of this world, and want less of the things of this world. We will notice that we are more interested in our personal relationship with Jesus Christ than we are in miracles and the gifts of the
Spirit. And we will find that we love God and Jesus Christ and their grace and love toward us, more every day! “And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified” (Acts 20:32). Before you buy, determine the cost! Before you become emotionally involved in an aircraft purchase, do the math. Estimate the projected cost before making a large financial investment. The place to start is to answer the question: How will a specific aircraft purchase/ trade impact your after-tax cash flow? If you currently own an aircraft, start by preparing a projected after-tax cash flow on your current aircraft for the next five years. This cash flow should include all projected expenses associated with the ownership and operation of the aircraft. Since aircraft depreciation provides a tax benefit to your cash flow, it is important to include the correct aircraft depreciation in your cash flow projection. Many factors affect the best time to
trade aircraft. Your common sense tells you that as your aircraft ages it will be less reliable and cost more to maintain than when it was new. To know how your aircraft is aging requires you to examine records concerning reliability, availability and maintenance cost. These records will help you make the best decision on when to replace your aircraft. Next, prepare a projected after-tax cash flow for each aircraft purchase you are considering. If you are trading your current aircraft, make sure the current aircraft tax basis is carried forward and the purchased aircraft depreciation is calculated correctly. In most situations, you will probably want to do a likekind exchange to save taxes. Another
important factor might be the BONUS depreciation available so check with your tax advisor before making the deal. When comparing different types of aircraft, compare the aircraft operating cost by having all aircraft fly the same number of MILES per year. This means that each aircraft flies a different number of HOURS per year if the aircraft speeds are different. So you end up with an apples-to-apples comparison, make sure you use the average fuel flow and block speed on each aircraft for your average stage length. Another factor that dramatically impacts ownership cost is the aircraft resale value. Different aircraft have different resale value percentages.
Do your homework on the estimated resale value of each aircraft in your comparison. Many aircraft on the market today are over 20 years old. The purchase price on these aircraft might appear to be a great deal, but these lower aircraft prices should be a warning to investigate further. The aircraft technology and operation cost of these great price deals will probably have a dramatic impact on operating cost and lowering the resale value when you are ready for your next aircraft. The difference between the BONUS depreciation and normal depreciation deserves comment. The total amount that can be depreciated using either method is the purchase price plus sales

tax for an outright purchase or the cash difference paid plus the sales tax for a trade transaction. The difference between the BONUS and normal depreciation is the year in which the depreciation is deducted as an expense. To really evaluate the cost difference, look at the after-tax cash flow difference that depreciation and resale values make in your situation. What is the Net Present Value (NPV) of the after-tax cash flows? You might be surprised with the results of this calculation. After projecting all the cost for your different options, you have a lot more
confidence in your decision. By doing the math first, you save a lot of time by not gathering facts on aircraft that don’t meet your budget requirements. You can concentrate all your other aircraft comparisons on the aircraft that do meet your financial requirements. The AircraftCostAnalysis program can be used to prepare after-tax cash flows on any type aircraft. To obtain more information go to www. AircraftCostAnalysis.com , click “Request Information”. through simple and effective weed management programs. Verdict, powered by Kixor® herbicide technology, is a corn preemergence herbicide product with the flexibility of use for soybeans. Verdict is a simple solution for preemergence burndown and residual control of 46 of today’s toughest weeds in corn, grain sorghum and soybeans, providing a foundation for maximum yield potential. “Verdict herbicide offers a stronger option for broadleaf weed control in corn, with the simplicity and convenience to also be used in soybeans,” said Bryan Perry, Kixor Product Manager at BASF. “BASF developed Verdict in response to our customers’ need for uncomplicated, effective weed-management solutions that contribute to an efficiently-managed operation. As part of the Kixor family of products, Verdict also offers growers additional modes of action to utilize in their corn and soybean weed resistance programs.” “With the label expansion, Verdict becomes the only enhanced corn
preemergence herbicide that is also labeled for use on soybeans,” said Perry. “Along with the low-use rate, the comprehensive Verdict label will give growers even greater flexibility to design a weed management program that fits their operation for maximum yield potential.”
Powered by Kixor herbicide technology The current Kixor family of products can be used on a wide range of crops and controls more than 70 broadleaf weeds. With its unique chemistry, Kixor tackles the toughest broadleaf weeds and offers growers an additional mode of action to manage resistance to glyphosate, ALS inhibitors and triazines. in my opinion
Wire strikes This is a topic that I should have addressed much earlier, but as the old cliché goes, “better late than never.” In my initial turbine transition brief, I tell my students that there are at least two things that a turbine ag pilot should keep foremost in mind; first, you must use clean fuel. Replace the Jet-A fuel filter often, and second; you cannot cut a hot wire. The wire thing is what I want to address in this article. I will address the clean fuel in another article. Recently I heard from two former students who had cut a hot wire with the prop; one with a Garrett and one with a PT6. My advice to both of them pretty much conforms to the following information I got from
my good friend Frank Kimmel of Kimmel Aviation Insurance. These are his words of wisdom, and In My Opinion, this is a highly relevant subject. #1. Call your agent immediately! Don’t finish out the day, don’t call your mechanic, or your buddy, or your wife... the insurance adjuster needs to get involved right away. It may take some time for the agent to get in touch with the adjuster, who will get him in touch with you which is why it is important to contact your agent first. Then call your wife and tell her you are OK (wives like that sort of stuff), then call your mechanic / or turbine engine shop and devise a plan of action.

Application Management is the easiest to use work order management program on the market.
#2. Call the FAA and / or fill out a NASA safety report form. I will discuss this NASA form in another column also. In the mean time, I highly recommend you research this on your own. The following is something that I was not aware of, and I find this very interesting and enlightening. What if it is not a hot wire? Nonsense! They are all hot! that is why they are called powerlines. Even telephone lines have a low impedance electrical current. Even if the wire happens to be disconnected from the service and is not “hot”, the prop still hit the wire and would be subject to a “prop strike” inspection. So we are back to square 1 -

and numbers 1 and 2 before still apply. What if the wire does not hit the prop? We see several strikes per year where a pilot hits the wire with a wing tip and fixes the damage and neglects to call the insurance company. Sooner or later, the electrical current that passes through the aircraft will have done some damage to the engine and will require attention.
Failure to notify the insurance company in a timely manner could jeopardize the insurance coverage for the loss. If enough time has passed and more damage has been done to the engine as a result of waiting to have the engine inspected, then much of that additional damage may not be covered by insurance (if at all!). And finally, what options does the insurance company give? The answer depends on what happens and who’s the
adjuster. If the adjuster is a seasoned veteran, he will insist on an inspection of the engine. The reality is that anytime, anything hits the prop, light strike or hard, hot wire or not, the engine will show damage at some point in the future. It is best to fix the damage right away. Having said that, a turbine engine could continue to run after the wire strike as long as the prop can hold together. Damage caused from a prop strike can hide for several hundred hours before problems surface, so the insurance adjusters are typically willing to “keep an eye” on the engine by pulling oil samples regularly and monitoring the engine parameters such as the N1 speed, ITT / EGT and start temperatures until the aircraft can go in for service. If everything stays pretty well in check, you might be able to wait until the end of the season and inspect the engine at that point. If Kimmel Aviation Insurance is not your agent, I recommend that you contact yours and get his/her own specific information and advice regarding wire strikes. And so as per always, be safe, have fun, and make money, and in that order. As a post script, I would like to add, I have been flying ag for almost 40 years, and I still love it .... it is fun!

NAAA board of directors meet in San Diego by Bill Lavender The National Agricultural Aviation Association (NAAA) held its annual fall board of directors meeting at the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center in San Diego, California October 14-17, 2010. The Leadership Training Program and National Agricultural Aviation Research and Education Foundation (NAAREF) met in conjunction with the NAAA board of directors. On Friday and Saturday, committees of the board of directors met before reporting to the directors Saturday afternoon. The Awards Committee reported it would be adding a new award called the Christopher-Evans Operation S.A.F.E. Award. NAAREF will make the nomination with the presentation at the annual NAAA convention and exposition in Savannah in December. Traditionally,
award recipients were not revealed until the convention. For the 2010 convention, recipients will be notified in advance. This will allow for better recognition and simplifying the logistics of recipients attending. Banners will be on display during the convention with a photo of the recipient for each award, along with a description of the award’s criteria. Scott Schertz reported the committee had placed two bids for new office space. One bid was not accepted because the seller removed the property from the market. The other bid was not for enough money to secure the purchase. The committee will continue its search for new office space. The Constitution and Bylaws Committee presented the board of directors with a motion that passed. The motion added a paragraph to the NAAA

Bylaws, specifically to Article III Section 3, allowing the president to fill a vacant allied director’s position. The committee also presented a proposed amendment change to Article VI Section 8 of the NAAA Bylaws that will be voted on at the December board of directors meeting in Savannah clarifying that the executive members and recent past presidents are considered voting board members and may be included as a quorum to do business. The Convention Committee reported registration was up for the 2010 convention in Savannah compared to conventions in the past, and that two host hotels are sold out and two hotels have been added.
A Calcutta will be held Saturday night with the golf tournament Sunday. Pratt & Whitney Canada has donated a new PT6-34AG engine that will be auctioned at the Savannah Convention Center during the convention. Next year
the NAAA convention will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton. The number of days for the convention in 2011 will remain the same as in 2010. The Government Relations Committee advised the board of directors to remind their constituents an electronic pesticide use survey would soon be available online. It was noted that participation in the survey was necessary to counter overly conservative risk assumptions EPA makes about our industry and will help to ensure aerial uses on pesticide labels. The committee also reported it would hold a 50-50 raffle at the convention to help raise funds for the Ag-Av political action committee. The winner does not have to be present. Directors will sell the tickets at the convention and at the preceding state and regional conventions. The Long Range Planning Committee reported that for the continued financial health of the association, consideration should be given to current and prospective future industry changes. As ag-av companies consolidate, it is evident membership numbers will be affected, reducing membership revenues. Several states, such as California, charge higher state dues than the national association.

Eventually, this issue will have to be addressed. Comments were it may be time to review the dues structure regarding the number of aircraft and aircraft hopper capacity. However, any changes will present new issues to be resolved. The Membership Committee will continue its program to award NAAA membership to ag-flight school graduates. The two BASF scholarship program recipients of $5,000 and $2,500 have been selected and will be announced at the NAAA convention. The committee also presented a motion,

The Museum committee will have a booth at the NAAA convention with lounging couches and complimentary beer. Ron Cline will have the radial engine cutaway at the 2011 convention and afterwards it will be delivered to its new home for display at the National Agricultural Aviation Museum in Jackson, Mississippi. The Nominating Committee presented next year’s NAAA officer nominations; President, Rick Richter / CA, VicePresident, Mark Hartz / AR, Treasurer, Perry Hofer / SD and Secretary, Chip Kemper / ID. The WNAAA officer nominations are President, Julie Broussard / LA, Vice-President, Kathy Diehl / KS, Treasurer, Ellye Rau / ND
and Secretary, Dona Jordean / TX. The nominees will be voted on at the board of directors meeting in Savannah in December. It was reported at the Safety and Federal Air Regulations Committee that 69 accidents have been recorded with six fatalities thus far in 2010. The higher numbers are attributed to the increased hours flown. The NAAA issued to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Airports Committee an intention to request a temporary interim amendment to exempt agricultural aircraft from being restricted from hot fueling. The NFPA Committee is working on a revision to its entire airports fire prevention recommendations document. The FAA is working on a procedure for both hot fueling and hot loading of aircraft. Certain safety measures are being suggested that may include that the pilot remain with the aircraft during the hot fueling, that the aircraft be grounded and that a fire extinguisher be available. A prototype of the guy wire marker is being made and may be available to view at the 2010 convention. The marker is the result of the NAAA guy wire contest. It was also reported that of
the large number of ag-aircraft in service with the AmSafe restraint system, there have been no adverse incidents reported resulting in an inadvertent deployment of the system. Board members were asked to advise their state members to be aware of what their FSDO considers a congested area. A proactive plan would be to contact the FSDO before an application will be made over any area that may be considered a congested area, possibly preventing an investigation. WNAAA will continue its Athena Program at the national convention and where they are invited by state associations. The WNAAA will host a raffle for two prizes; an iPad and iPod. There was not a winner of this year’s essay contest. The four entries were not considered to be appropriate. Next year’s essay theme is, “How to Promote Agricultural Aviation Positively”. The annual fall board of directors meeting was adjourned Saturday afternoon, October, 16, 2010.

ntsb reports NTSB Identification: *CEN10CA426* Date: July 22, 2010 Location: Alexandria, LA Aircraft: G-164B, Injuries: 1 Uninjured. The commercial rated pilot was performing an aerial application run when a “puff” of smoke came from the engine. Immediately after the puff of smoke, the engine lost power, but kept running. The pilot tried to return to the airfield, but the airplane would not maintain altitude/airspeed. The pilot then elected to conduct a forced landing in the rice field. During the landing, the airplane rolled for 50-150 yards before flipping over onto its back. The pilot was not injured; however, the airplane sustained substantial damage in the forced landing. A visual inspection of the

engine failed to identify the reason for the loss of engine power. At the time this report was submitted, the pilot had not returned a completed NTSB Form 6120.1, (The Pilot/Operator Aircraft Accident/ Incident Report), as requested. NTSB Identification: *WPR10LA387* Date: August 06, 2010 Location: Meridian, CA Aircraft: PZL MIELEC M18 Injuries: 1 Minor. According to the pilot, he had just taken off to the south and was beginning a turn to the east, when he heard a “loud snap,” and the engine stopped developing power. He leveled the wings, and attempted a landing in the waterfilled rice paddy immediately south of the airstrip. After touchdown, the airplane nosed over onto its back. A nearby witness assisted the pilot in exiting the airplane. According to information provided by
law enforcement and FAA personnel, the airplane was registered to Martin’s Dusters, which was the pilot’s aerial application company. The airplane was equipped with a Lycoming T53-7A turbine engine, and a 3-bladed propeller. The fuselage fractured at the firewall, and the engine and cowling were folded aft and under the remainder of the airplane. All 3 propeller blades were bent aft, and the vertical stabilizer was canted forward. According to the pilot, he had a total flight experience of about 20,000 hours, and he held ratings for airplane single-engine-land and helicopters. NTSB Identification: *WPR10LA396* Date: August 11, 2010 Location: Tracy, CA Aircraft: GRUMMAN G164 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. According to the pilot, he had started flying about 0630 the morning of the accident. The accident flight was the
second flight of the day. He reported that the airplane was loaded with 240 gallons of pesticide and about 35 gallons of fuel. While spraying a corn field, he heard a loud bang, followed by a loss of engine power. The pilot also reported that the engine began shaking and he started looking for a place to land. The pilot was able to land the airplane in an alfalfa field. He reported that the field was slick and as he activated the left brake to intentionally ground loop the airplane, it did not respond. The airplane continued its forward movement until it struck a fence at the end of the field. The airplane came to rest inverted in a nearby ditch adjacent to the alfalfa field. An FAA inspector responded to the accident site stated that he did not see anything wrong with the engine, but he was not able to rotate the engine manually with the propeller. Further inspection of the engine will be accomplished after the wreckage is recovered.

the engine exhaust. He leveled the airplane; however, it settled back onto the runway. The pilot checked the engine torque, which was normal, and rotated for takeoff as the airplane approached the end of the runway. As the airplane climbed to 10 to 15 feet above the ground, it began to settle onto a grass area beyond the runway. The airplane rolled on the grass for about 100 to 150 feet, before the pilot elected to abort the takeoff. The airplane subsequently struck trees, which resulted in substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage, before
coming to rest in a parking lot. Initial examination of the airframe and engine by representatives from Air Tractor, and Pratt Whitney Canada, under the supervision of a FAA inspector, did not reveal any preimpact malfunctions. The airplane will be examined further at a later date. NTSB Identification: *WPR10CA444* Date: September 02, 2010 Location: Murtaugh, ID Aircraft: Schweizer Aircraft Corp 164B Injuries: 1 Minor. The pilot reported that he noticed the
wind was picking up at the private airstrip when he landed from his fourth load of spray for the aerial application flight. During the takeoff roll of the pilot’s fifth load, as the tail was coming off the ground, a gust of wind struck the airplane and it veered towards the right. The airplane exited the runway environment and struck a power pole, substantially damaging the wings, fuselage and empennage. The nearest weather reporting station located about 13 miles to the west of the accident airstrip reported wind from 070 degrees at 13 knots gusting to 19 knots. The pilot reported no mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airframe or engine prior to the accident. NTSB Identification: *WPR10LA446* Date: September 03, 2010 Location: Salinas, CA Aircraft: BELL 47G Injuries: 1 Serious. a flight plan was not filed. A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector, who responded to the accident site, reported that company personnel revealed to him that the pilot stated that he had become disoriented just prior to impact with terrain. The inspector further reported that the helicopter had come to rest in the southbound lanes of an interstate highway, and that the aircraft had sustained substantial damage to its airframe. The helicopter was recovered from the accident to a secured location for further examination. NTSB Identification: *WPR10LA452* Date: September 07, 2010 Location: Winters, CA Aircraft: AEROSPATIALE SA315 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On September 7, 2010 an Aerospatiale SA315B experienced a loss of engine power shortly after takeoff, and subsequent to the autorotation, made a hard landing near Winters, California. According to the pilot, the hopper was full of a water-based miracle grow type substance, and the helicopter was low on fuel. He pulled pitch to take off and was about 200 feet above ground level
when the engine decelerated to an idle power setting. The pilot performed an autorotation, but due to the height above the ground, the helicopter landed hard. The landing gear skids spread, and the main rotor blades cut off the tail boom. The pilot reported that the engine had approximately 190 hours since a field major overhaul had been performed. NTSB Identification: *ERA10LA474* Date: September 10, 2010 Location: Doerun, GA Aircraft: AYRES S2R-G10 Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On September 10, 2010, an Ayres Corporation S2R-G10 was substantially damaged when it impacted trees during a forced landing, following a loss of engine power near Doerun, Georgia. The pilot was not injured. According to the pilot, he was “finishing up” spraying a field and “doing clean up passes,” when a vibration started and he heard a loud “whine.” He observed that the exhaust gas temperature was above the temperature limit and was rising and almost simultaneously he observed that the indication on the torque meter was dropping.
He then made a decision to land in a pasture that adjoined the field that he was spraying. He landed in the pasture and struck several “large anthills” which caused the airplane to bounce up and become airborne each time. The airplane then overran the pasture and struck trees, separating the wings from their mounting location, breaking open the fuselage at the firewall, and separating the engine from its mounting location. According to FAA and maintenance records, the airplane was manufactured in 1999. The airplane’s most recent 100 hour inspection was completed on August 11, 2010. At the time of the accident, the airplane had accrued 4,481.6 total hours of operation. According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the pilot held a commercial pilot certificate with a rating for airplane single-engine land. He reported 17,247.6 total hours of flight experience. His most recent application for an FAA second-class medical certificate was on February 16, 2010. The airplane was retained by the Safety Board for further examination.

NTSB Identification: *ERA10LA484* Date: September 18, 2010 Location: Covington, TN Aircraft: BELL OH-58A Injuries: 1 Uninjured. On Sept. 18, 2010 a Bell OH58A, impacted terrain following a loss of engine power immediately after takeoff from a portable platform near Covington, TN. According to a telephone interview with the operator and the pilot, the helicopter had been refueled with approximately 165 pounds of fuel from a stainless steel 500 gallon tank prior to the accident flight. The operator had utilized that tank to refuel the helicopter for several days prior to the accident, including the 4 hours the helicopter flew the morning of the accident. During takeoff, about 30 feet above ground level and at approximately 30 mph, while at translational lift, the engine began
“surging.” The helicopter experienced a loss of engine power and began losing altitude. It impacted the ground “fairly hard” and the main rotor blades struck and severed the tail boom approximately 1 foot aft of the horizontal stabilizer. NTSB Identification: *WPR10CA466* Date: September 21, 2010 Location: Mecca, CA Aircraft: HILLER UH-12E Injuries: 1 Minor. While maneuvering during an agricultural application flight, the pilot flew too close to a telephone pole. The helicopter’s main rotor blade impacted the pole about 10 feet above the ground. Thereafter, the pilot lost control of the helicopter and crashed into the field. The pilot reported that prior to the collision, no mechanical malfunctions were experienced with the helicopter.

Crop duster took maiden flight on July 31, 1970 BRAZIL — Embraer is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first flight of the Ipanema crop duster. The airplane project began at the end of the 1960s, on the orders of the Ministry of Agriculture, that the Research and Development Institute (Instituto de Pesquisas e Desenvolvimento – IPD) design the first agricultural aircraft to substitute imported models. The project became a reality with the founding of Embraer, in 1969. Today, the Ipanema is the leader of Brazil’s agricultural aviation, with more than 1,100 planes delivered and 75% of the fleet in operation, nationwide. The Ipanema was conceived to modernize Brazilian agriculture. Initial studies began in 1969, and the name was chosen in honor of the Ipanema farm, located in Iperó, 128 km (80 miles) from the city of São Paulo. Then, this farm had a school and an agricultural aviation research center maintained by
the Ministry of Agriculture. The first prototype of the Ipanema, registration number PP-ZIP, was the second airplane produced by Embraer, soon after the Urupema (EMB 400) glider. The original model (EMB 200) had a 260 HP engine, fixed-pitch propeller, hydraulic spraying system and a 580-liter
(153 U.S. gallons) hopper. The maiden flight took place on July 31, 1970, at Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, State of São Paulo, and approval was received in December 1971. The company Corsário de Aviação, from the State of Goiás, ordered ten

aircraft, in March 1971, and was the Ipanema’s first customer. In February 1972, the first airplane, registration number PT-GBA, was delivered and entered service in the fight against pests that threatened cotton crops. Sales of the Ipanema constantly grew, which significantly added to Embraer’s own development. In November 1973, the 100th airplane was delivered to Serviços Agro Aéreos do Sul. In 1975, Uruguay’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fishing ordered ten Ipanemas, along with five EMB 110 Bandeirantes, marking Embraer’s first exports. In 1980, Embraer acquired Indústria Aeronáutica Neiva, a company founded in 1954 and that produced small airplanes. With the merger of the two companies, the Ipanema’s production was transferred to Botucatu, São Paulo, in 1982, where it continues. In order to adapt it to operational

realities and to keep it in line with the times, Embraer has made a number of modifications in the Ipanema’s design, over the years, such as a variable pitch propeller, larger wheels, more powerful 300 HP engine, tail wheel with a larger diameter, new shock absorbers and wing profile, among others. As of 1992, when the capacity of the spraying tank was increased to 950 liters (250 gallons), the new EMB 202 model was fondly nicknamed the “Ipanemão” (Big Ipanema). This version also included aerodynamic improvements, to ensure greater speed and stability, and an innovative electrostatic spraying system. The most recent and significant change, however, became a reality in 2005. On March 15, the 1000th Ipanema was delivered. Coincidentally, that was also the first model with the 320 HP ethanolpowered engine, which is the same fuel developed in Brazil used mainly by the nation’s automobiles. The project was developed in a partnership with the Department of Aerospace Science and Technology (Departamento de Ciência e Tecnologia Aeroespacial – DCTA). From that point on, Embraer began to offer ethanol conversion kits for the airplanes powered by aviation gasoline

(AvGas). Currently, around 25% of the Brazilian fleet uses ethanol. Besides being less polluting, this fuel extends the useful life of the engine and reduces the aircraft’s operating cost. The Ipanema has established itself as the first airplane in the world to be produced in series with an ethanolpowered engine. Recognition for the big innovation by the aviation world came quickly. In 2005, the Ipanema received the Aeronautics Industry Award in the
General Aviation category, presented by the renowned British magazine Flight International. That same year, another important international publication, the U.S.’s Scientific American, considered it to be one of the 50 most important inventions of the year. In Brazil, the Ipanema was granted the Melhores da Terra (Best on Earth) Award by the Gerdau Group. “We would not have gotten where we are today, if it weren’t with the contribution of all who have dedicated,
View of the Botucatu plant (Neiva), today and still dedicate, time and attention to the development of the Ipanema,” says Almir Borges, Industrial Director of the Botucatu plant. “We expect to keep the Ipanema in operation for many more years, and to that end we will continue evaluating additional improvements to the product to meet the needs of our customers.” So, much has changed over these four decades, but the contribution of the
Ipanema to the Brazilian agricultural scene is undeniable. The 40-year veteran still has the same energy as the pioneer, motivated by constant technological innovations. The airplane’s flexibility allows it to be used not only for crop dusting, but also for planting, and seeding rivers, as well as combating carriers and larvae. The Ipanema has become a symbol of Brazilian agriculture and worldwide aviation.

75 BELOW 24-HOUR DARKNESS ONE ENGINE THAT COULD
It was a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 free-turbine engine that powered the Twin Otter aircraft on a South Pole rescue mission the world won’t soon forget. Sean Loutitt, captain and chief pilot at Kenn Borek Air, rescued a man who was in dire need of treatment after developing a life-threatening illness while stationed in the frozen wilderness. His life depended on his rescue. And his rescue depended on P&WC engines.
