Tracy’s Helmet
In 1983, I managed to end upside down underwater in a Thrush after an overloaded takeoff.
A 6 | agairupdate.com
If you only read one article in the February issue of AgAir Update, be sure it is Tracy Thurman’s “Hands on Flying” column about ag-pilot helmets, “Three Pounds”. Tracy is an excellent writer (has some western books on Amazon) with a very enticing dialogue when it comes to making a point. He has the ability to drive home something important related to our industry with a bit of dry wit, making for a good read. Tracy’s column this month about helmets is a perfect example of how he can make the reader sit back and soak in his words. The following is an excerpt: “Consider this: everything that is you, your ideas, your personality, your dreams, the way you walk, talk, eat and sleep, everything that is your life and essence is completely and only contained within three pounds of gelatinous goop floating around in grease encased in about a quarter inch of bone.” Tracy is describing your brain and goes on to explain how the helmet is an important component to protecting those three pounds. He acknowledges some pilots don’t wear helmets, but he also proves that’s probably not a good idea. With high-tech helmets that are available today; lightweight, noise canceling, smaller overall size, made of space-age strong materials, I agree. I vividly remember in the late 1970s (because I can recall the approximate year based on the aircraft I was flying) I was approaching to land in my Ag-Cat. I had the left side door open and streamlining in the wind. This was before airconditioning. I did not have the chinstrap snapped in place. For whatever reason, I stuck my head out into the wind to look back and instantly my coveted helmet flew off my head to land in the swamp below. I was young at the time, about 25 or 26 years old, and bullet proof. “What the heck? I just lost a $600 helmet (the price in those days). What did I
need a “crash” helmet for? If I was going to crash, I wouldn’t fly the aircraft!” I’m sure you’ve heard that cliche before; a dumb statement. I don’t recall when I decided to buy another helmet, but I did. Thank goodness, because in 1983, I managed to end upside down underwater in a Thrush after an overloaded takeoff. When the aircraft went over its nose and onto its back at 70 mph into the water, it was not pretty. After I finally stopped trying to breath water and mud upside down, strapped in the cockpit, I came to my senses and kicked my way out of the Thrush. There wasn’t much kicking to do, as a good portion of the canopy was gone. If not for the helmet I was wearing, it is very likely I wouldn’t be writing this editorial today.
Many pilots will be starting their season in the coming months, while many are finishing and others have already started a new season for 2020. Don’t let the mild inconvenience of wearing a helmet stop you from wearing it. If you are uncomfortable with your helmet, buy another one that is comfortable. It may take a long flying day’s earnings to pay for it, but it will be worth it. Helmets are one of those things you don’t need until you need it. Besides, you are going to spend hundreds of hours wearing it, make yourself as comfortable as possible. Wear the damn helmet! Until next month, Keep Turning…

On Target by Ted Delanghe
Along with this new generation of aircraft came a new generation of the Tiede family
A 10 | agairupdate.com
In the modern ag aviation world of turbines, GPS navigation, 500-gallon plus hoppers, flow control and digital readouts, we tend to forget that it has not always been that way. In 1966, a newly minted pilot by the name of Ralph Tiede bought a Piper Pawnee and started Target Airspray, a fledgling aerial application business near Strathmore, Alberta, about 20 miles due east of Calgary. It was all eyeball, stick and rudder flying, ground flaggers and with a 45-foot swath and 120-gallon loads, a whole lot of takeoffs and landings on runways, roads, fields, or just about anywhere that could accommodate the Pawnee. Given its small size, that indeed meant just about anywhere. The business grew in size and so did the aircraft. Ralph partnered with Neil McClain, first with two Cessna 180s, followed by an S-2D Snow, granddaddy of the Thrush and Air Tractor families of aircraft that would soon follow in its footsteps. Designed by Leland Snow in the mid ‘50s the S-2
was one of the first aircraft designed from the getgo solely for aerial application, featuring a P&W R1340 600 hp radial, a 300-gallon hopper and an ultra strong airframe. Affectionately called a tractor with wings, it ushered in a new era in the design and operation of ag aircraft. Along with this new generation of aircraft came a new generation of the Tiede family, with son Darren born to Ralph and Joan the same year Ralph started flying. Given those major events, not to mention growing up around aircraft, it is no surprise that Darren would sooner or later be in the ag aviation business. After earning his Commercial Pilot’s License, Darren began his spraying career in 1988. Following in the Tiede tradition of having two major events coincide, he married Cheryl that same year. Once again the Tiede family and Target Airspray continued to grow in tandem with Darren and Cheryl having four children: Ben, Diana, Kathleen and Evan. Soon Ralph and Darren were

operating as a father/son combo in two Thrush S2Rs. In 2008, after more than 40 years in the industry, Ralph retired from crop spraying with Darren taking over the reins of the business that same year. Today, Target Airspray consists of three 510P Thrushes flown by Darren and pilot Cody Rockafellow (with son Ben working his way into a seat), operating from three permanent bases in southern Alberta to accommodate their evergrowing customer base. In addition to expanding the company, Darren became more and more involved in fostering the Canadian ag aviation industry, first as a Board Member and
then President of the Alberta Aerial Applicators Association (AAAA), then as a Board Member and current President of the Canadian Aerial Applicators Association (CAAA). During an interview with the author, Darren shared his thoughts on becoming CAAA president in 2019 and looking ahead to future developments. “One of the first things that became abundantly clear to me early on in the job of president is that you quickly have a great appreciation for all those who have gone before and who have contributed so much to our members and the industry at large. Darren stressed the critically important roles

the national organization and the provincial associations have in promoting the growth and safety of the Canadian aerial application industry. “Safety has been and will continue to be the number one priority across the board. We have been very proactive in getting that message out to our members and in developing a wide variety of resource materials that will make their operations safer, more efficient and more effective. That includes online training, safety videos, educational presentations, regulatory documents and a wide range of other benefits that help our members stay current on legislation, hazards and safe working procedures.” As with any industry, keeping up with regulatory changes is also a high priority for those in the aerial application business. The CAAA is at the forefront of working with Transport Canada, Canada’s national transportation regulatory agency. “We keep an open and active dialogue with Transport Canada in working with them to develop policies that are accessible, relevant and beneficial to our members. One current example is incorporating the new Crew Resource Management (CRM) requirements into daily ag operations. At first glance, the concept doesn’t seem particularly applicable to single seat aircraft, but once you get into particulars – for example threat and error management, situational awareness, pressure and stress – you find CRM is applicable to virtually any type of aviation operation,” explains Darren. As with any crop protection measure, whether it be by air or on the ground, another area of focus that is becoming more and more of an issue is dealing with the legal environment that has becoming increasingly more challenging to navigate. Darren noted, “It’s been a reality quite a while south of the border and we are beginning to see things such as class action lawsuits that simply didn’t effect the crop protection industry before. It’s something we just have to research and educate ourselves as part of a new reality.” Another high priority item for the CAAA is in working to get new products approved for aerial application. “It is a long process to get new products registered from Health Canada, a process that can take years. Along the way, we work closely with the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) in promoting sustainable pest management, while ensuring new products, wherever possible, are registered for aerial application use.”
One specific example deals with product reevaluations. The use of mancozeb is currently under review by the PMRA. Mancozeb is a potato industry staple for fighting late blight and early blight, and users fear its loss would increase production costs to farmers, as well as removing a safe, established product for the effective management of disease resistance in potatoes. The CAAA gained a seat on the Mancozeb Task Force, which has been advocating the continued use of mancozeb. “Through the efforts of the Task Force and support from the CAAA,” Darren stressed, “we are hopeful that we will be able to continue the use of mancozeb in potatoes and other crops, as it is a proven cost-effective tool in our arsenal of fungicide applications.” The issue of Remotely Piloted Aircraft System units – more commonly referred to as drones - is an increasingly hot topic. “We know there are a wide range of potential uses for drones in crop protection covering crop assessment, soil analysis, pest population levels and the like. We have been proactive in bringing drone operators into our Association by offering them Allied Industry Membership, for those who do not provide aerial application services, but who support the aerial application industry.” Darren added, “I don’t know if anyone has a solid handle on just what unmanned aircraft will mean for the future of our industry, but one thing is certain – they are here and they are here to stay.” Darren is very positive about the future of the aerial application business. “When I look ahead, I can see a lot of good things coming down the road. The growth in the use of biological pesticides that are very target specific, advances in sensor imaging technology that will allow us to pinpoint with increasing accuracy the state of crop growth and pest infestation, better training not only initially for someone entering the industry, but continued education and training across the board.” As with agriculture in general, the aerial application business has had its share of ups and downs. On a final note, Darren addressed that very point. “I know there will be a lot of challenges in the future, but that comes with the territory. We must always keep our eye on the fact that we are a critically important part of growing healthy crops to feed the world. It’s a job we take seriously and it’s something we will continue to work on making aerial application safer and more effective than ever before.” agairupdate.com | A 13

Three Pounds
A helmet is to aid in keeping a survivable crash from becoming fatal.
A 14 | agairupdate.com
“They call them crash helmets don’t they” The pilot asked. “Yes, I guess they do.” I answered. The guy shrugged and grinned. “Well, I don’t intend to crash.” With that he walked out to the airplane strapped in and went to work bare headed, save for a Dave Clark headset. I always thought that was a pretty stupid thing for an otherwise intelligent man to say. As far as I know, the guy never did crash which is very good. Especially since he never wore a helmet. There’s been a lot of guys who haven’t been that fortunate. And it doesn’t matter how good a pilot you are, or think you are. The worst can happen to you. I’ll go out on a limb here and surmise that there haven’t been very many crashes where the pilot intended to crash. And I’ll bet most thought it would never happen to them. Arrogance won’t save you in a crash. A fat log book won’t cushion the impact. A helmet should be required equipment. There, I said it. I know, there’s a lot of pilots who work without them. It’s their choice to do so. I know operators who don’t care if you wear a helmet or not. Others will not allow you to fly one of their airplanes without one. Chinstrap secured at all times. Consider this; Everything that is you, your ideas, your personality, your dreams, the way you walk, talk, eat and sleep, everything that is your life and essence is completely, and only contained within three pounds of gelatinous goop floating around in grease encased in about a quarter inch of bone. That’s it. There’s no back up, no saved files, nothing, nada, zilch. That’s all you have. The good Lord built us to withstand some pretty significant bumps and bruises, He didn’t design survivability of being slammed into the ground at high velocity surrounded by steel. There have
been more than several ag pilots who have walked away from crashes because they were wearing their helmets. There’s been some who might have walked away but didn’t because they weren’t wearing a helmet, or their helmets weren’t worn properly. A fatal crash isn’t survivable no matter what you’re wearing. That’s true, there are some wrecks that a human just can’t live through. There’s not much we can do about that. However, the reason for a helmet is to aid in keeping a survivable crash from becoming fatal. That’s a big difference. Life and death. There’s a lot of hard surfaces in the cockpit of an airplane. The violent dynamics of an airplane crash will slam your skull into any part of it. Bone is pound for pound stronger than steel, however, you only have a little bit of it. Research shows that it takes 520 pounds of force to crush a human skull. Five hundred and twenty pounds… If a guy weighed two hundred pounds, a 2.6 G impact would be enough to break his skull. 2.6 G ain’t much my friends, especially when you consider most crashes involve much greater G forces than that. Much greater. After the bone is gone brother, the rest is history. Of course, you may not die. You might survive the crash. Then you’ll have to live through the aftermath. I spoke to a former soldier once at the V.A. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury. Was it enemy fire that caused it? Nope. He fell off of a truck and hit his head on the ground. Busted his skull. A simple accident. He had to learn to live again. His vison is impaired. He gets migraines. He walks with a hitched gait having to concentrate on making his legs move. His wife drives him where he needs to go. Mostly doctor’s appointments. He said he once was strong and fast, a regular badass he was. Now, he has to have help in just about
INTERNATIONAL
everything he does. He said he got lost once in a grocery store. “I was scared to death man. Scared. I ain’t never been scared and here I was in a damn grocery store about to cry like a little kid because I couldn’t figure out where I was. Hell, I can’t even make a living anymore.” The man’s face was contorted in shame and sadness. He clenched his fist and slammed it on his thigh. “I wish I had of just died.” That’s a hell of a place for a man to be. Three pounds. Surrounded by a quarter inch of bone…
You need to protect the most important part of your body. Your head. You need to protect the most important part of your body. Your head. Within it is contained everything you need to function. Everything you need to live is tied directly to what’s floating around in your skull. Take care of it. Protect it. It’s where you keep your memories and your future. Once its broke. It’s broke for good. Ag pilots have a wide selection of helmets and gear available to them these days. Helmet technology has advanced greatly since the days when pilots were wearing old football helmets. New, light weight, custom fitted and comfortable with top of the line sound systems installed. Noise cancellation, bluetooth, stereophonics and any color combination you want. Get one or two visors and use them. No, they aren’t cheap. Some cost as much as a pickup truck did back when grandpappy was hauling dust in Stearmans. It’s a very worthy investment. Anything you spend on your survivability is money well spent. It’s not the cost of the helmet you should worry about, but the value of what’s contained inside. Keep that in mind. Fly well and stay SAFE!

Airstrip Gradient Calculation by Mike Feeney
The history of this simple graph goes back to 1981 when, working for the NZ Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport, I devised a similar ‘user-friendly’ means for pilots to quickly determine to what extent airstrip slope increased its effective operational length. It was published in articles I wrote for their “Flight Safety” journal and was primarily intended as an aid for the training of pilots undergoing specialized flight instruction for an Agricultural Pilot Rating. In the early 2000s, I joined Wanganui Aero Work, a large New Zealand operator of fixed-wing agricultural aircraft and Part 135 helicopters. In my role as as Quality Assurance and Safety Manager, I was involved in airstrip standards, including advising growers on improvement methods and, on a few occasions, the siting and works planning for new airstrips. At this time, A 16 | agairupdate.com
there were no country-wide standards for farm airstrips; particularly for the increasing number of heavy turbo-prop aircraft which are unable to economically operate from many of the historic strips which suited types such as the Fletcher FU24, DHC-2 Beaver, Cessna 188 Agwagon, etc. Some pilots may operate their aircraft from sloping rural airstrips. This article may well prove of interest to them. If you are not sure how to work out the gradient of an airstrip, there is an easy method which you can use. Simply note your altimeter reading at the top and bottom of the airstrip (or you could use your GPS if you are viewing several satellites), then walk out the length and use the formula: Height difference divided by airstrip length and multiply by 100. Example for a typical airstrip: Length = 1,300 feet. Height difference = 90 feet
INTERNATIONAL
= 90/1,300 = .06923....7% for practical purposes. An example for a really steep ag-strip: 150/800 = 18.75 % (5% is about 3 degrees). When you look at the 20% slope on the graph, you may think it does not appear to be that steep. Let me assure you that when you are approaching such an airstrip, particularly with a tailwind which is quite normal during ag-operations, it will appear to be much fore-shortened and not to be attempted without training by an experienced person. I have operated from airstrips steeper than 20% and, until one gets used to them, they appear rather daunting indeed. In the earlier days with under-powered aircraft, such as the Fletcher FU-24, 225 and 240 BHP models, you needed to touch down well up the strip and keep moving to reach the loading area as it might prove very difficult to taxi up. I do recall having to keep the power well up in the FU-24 to prevent the aircraft from falling back onto its tail, then carefully turning to take off again and make another attempt. But, I was new to the Fletcher then and soon learned to be much more ‘aggressive’ and just fly straight at the airstrip face, get the nose coming up and up and up, whilst pouring on the power as one touched down looking up at the sky. Most exhilarating indeed! Recalling the periods when I was training new chums into steep strips, I was very wary of those pilots who were overly timid. Some had a strong tendency to ‘stalk’ the airstrip and get too low and too slow, ending up using far too much power just to make the threshold, thus leaving themselves with little reserve with which to execute the transition needed to equal the airstrip slope during the flare. This was particularly pronounced at the high altitude strips in Papua New Guinea. The look
on their faces when they went for more power and found that the throttle was already wide open! (This was using non-turbocharged engines when the max power available could be only 60% of that at sea level) For take-off, one carefully selected an aiming point in the distance, opened to max power and simply fell off the loading area into space. Woe you, if you failed to use the same aiming target each take-off. The effect of gravity is non-linear and is a function of the sine of the airstrip slope. For example: Slope 12 degrees = sine 12 = 0.20791 = about one fifth of the aircraft’s weight will be the vertical component. So, if the aircraft weighs 5,000 lbs., then acceleration will be enhanced by the equivalent of 1,000 lbs of thrust. This equates to another 300 BHP. In the case of a 400 BHP FU-24, this is a large help as this aircraft has a static thrust of about 1,500 lbs. An overloaded FU-24-400 might haul a tonne from a 250-metre steep airstrip, but needs close to 450500 metres from a level grassed surface. Let’s look at an extreme, ridiculous example. Say the strip has a slope of 80 degrees; virtually vertical. The sine of 80 degrees is 0.98481...near enough to unity. So the acceleration force will be the weight of the aircraft plus the propeller thrust. That is 32 feet per second, plus thrust (ignoring drag). Flying airspeed will be attained in a few seconds, but is the take-off distance really almost zero? It all depends on how we define take-off distance. I define it for sloping airstrips as that distance which is required to lift off and reach such an airspeed as will enable the aircraft to sustain flight clear of ground effect and attain at least level flight. As you rocket off the end of a steep strip, you agairupdate.com | A 17
INTERNATIONAL
have an increasing rate of descent until you can execute the energy exchange required to attain level flight. This eats up distance with a heavy aeroplane. With our near-vertical airstrip case, the real take-off distance will be considerable, unless you want to just keep on diving. And there is no such thing as a ‘free lunch’. Even on moderate slopes, you become airborne well below your starting point due to the trade-off. If you need to climb to your target spreading area, you will burn a lot more fuel to make up for the so-called ‘free ride’! Of course, many airstrips have a variable slope; generally steeper at the top and becoming more level towards the end. Some may even rise somewhat and then fall. So what we are considering is the “mean” or average slope. There are some variables here which I shall not venture into now. However, for practical purposes, just remember that if there is a favorable height difference between the point where you begin rolling and the spot where you lift off, then you benefit by that difference by way of potential energy. Another complex matter is the effect that the surface has on take-off ground roll. The main predicating factors are tyre pressure, profile and wheel loading. Most New Zealand grasssurfaced airstrips are actually in a ‘plastic’ state and deform under the force exerted by a tyre. During the earlier stages of the roll, a sort of moving ‘chock’ is created in front of the tyre.

The effect lessens as wing lift increases until the aircraft is beginning to ‘ride’ over the grass. The experienced ag-pilot can gain a fairly reasonable idea of airstrip plasticity and expected rolling resistance by simply walking the airstrip and every now and then digging the heel of one’s boot into the surface. You sort of get to know how sluggish the aircraft will be during the early part of the takeoff...it’s a ‘feel’ thing. When I was measuring take-off performance of ag-aircraft on soft surfaces, I would get down on the ground straight after the aircraft had passed to measure the surface deformation and observe it slowly resuming its former shape. Some loader drivers and farmers must have considered me to be at least slightly eccentric if I had not explained what I was doing. Oh well, perhaps they were right! The graph in this article is not a “legal” item of performance data. It is a guide only. It has been used by many ag-pilots, none have advised that it is significantly in error. As I said earlier, it is a result of a huge number of directly observed takeoffs by overloaded ag-aircraft and from my own ag and bush flying experience.

Restoration of a Special Pawnee by Bill Lavender
The Piper Pawnee PA-25 with a Lycoming 150 horsepower engine was the first production aircraft specifically designed for agricultural aviation. Piper Aircraft hired Fred Weick from Texas A & M University in 1953 to help with the engineering of the aircraft. However, it was 1959 before the Pawnee was available for ag pilots. The aircraft was an evolution of Weick’s AG-1, the Transland AG-2 and Transland AG-3 aircraft, using as many Piper parts as possible. Thus, was born the Piper Pawnee PA-25. Between the years 1959 through 1981, 5,167 Pawnees of various models were built. ➤

The airplane is used just for training with only water being used. 3. In 1971, Mr. Ray Wessells converted a standard Pawnee into a tandem, dual cockpit version ideal for training ag-pilots and was called a Pawnee Fledgling. The aircraft was used at various locations throughout the world before finally in 1998 was bought by Trabajos Aereos Espejo S.L. of Cordoba Spain. Trabajos Aereos Espejo S.L totally renovated the aircraft and operated it from 1998 to 2015 at a Spanish training school. During that time, approximately 400 pilots were trained using the aircraft during 42 CAVAG courses. While traveling in Spain in 2016, Antonio Carlos da Silva (Carlito) of Tangara Aeroagricola discovered this dual cockpit Pawnee. For two years, Carlito tried to negotiate the purchase of the aircraft so he could export it to Brazil and restore to like-new condition. Finally, in 2018, Carlito was successful in purchasing the Pawnee and the aircraft arrived in Brazil in a container. With its original red and white paint, the aircraft was inspected by ANAC and allowed to be imported to the Tangará Aeroagrícola maintenance facility in Orlândia. months, Carlito and Tangará Aeroagrícola fullfilled their dream and completely restored the aircraft. With its original red and white paint, the aircraft was inspected by ANAC and permitted to be imported to Tangara Aeroagricola’s maintenance facility in Orlandia. After nine months, Carlito and Tangara Aeroagricole painstakingly fullfilled a dream and fully restored the aircraft. Why was Carlito so dedicated to bringing this Pawnee back to Brazil? It was because he wanted to donate the aircraft as a legacy to his three grandchildren; Roberto Magalhães Silva Ribeiro, Matheus Vilela Rosa Silva and João Vilela Rosa Silva. The aircraft is ANAC certified and airworthy. To maintain its airworthiness, the aircraft is occasionally flown during the year only by Tangara Aeroagricola ag-pilots. This is the same dual cockpit Piper Pawnee PA-25 that was on display at the 2019 SINDAG congress in Sertãozinho where many pilots were able to see a true, historical agricultural aircraft that represented the beginning of modern ag-aircraft. was also on display and demonstrated at a recent Pirassununga Air Force Academy Open House airshow event. Tangará Aeroagrícola was founded in 1986 by Carlito in the city of Orlândia SP. The company got its first service contract in Tangará da Serra, MT, to meet pasture sowing and fertilizing requirements from a local manufacturer, hence the name Tangará Aeroagricola. In the 1990s, a rise in the demand for services due to sugar cane, soybeans and cotton planting in the Orlândia region made it an attractive location for Tangara Aeroagricola’s services. Now,
the company is permanently settled in Orlândia, SP. Today, the company offers three main services: ANAC approved CHE970901 for aircraft maintenance, used aircraft sales and aerial applications. It is also an authorized Air Tractor service center for AeroGlobo Aeronaves/ Lane Aviation based in Botucatu SP. For its aerial application services, the company fleet consists of aircraft with capacities from 600 liters up to 1,800 liters; all around, one of the largest ag aircraft companies in Brazil with 12 Air Tractors, two Piper PA-36 Braves with 375 HP and three PA-25 Pawnees with 260 HP.

A Surprise in a Turn!
We have an image to look after. If we have to prove something, it should be our professionalism.
A 26 | agairupdate.com
Last week I received a message from a longtime friend telling me about a situation that made me reflect, as he is a pilot whom I respect and admire. For obvious reasons, I will keep confidential the person and companies involved. He was flying a Pawnee had just over 25 gallons in the hopper. Suddenly, during a turn, he heard a crack and realized that something was wrong with the aircraft; the control stick no longer commanded the ailerons. The aileron cable pulley support that had broken. He told me both ailerons were deflected downward. His reaction was to use the rudder pedals to turn and level the wings. He decided to return to the base at a low altitude, so if something even more serious happened maybe the aircraft could be controlled long enough to land straight ahead. I asked him what was the angle of bank in the turn when this happened? He answered, “45 degrees.” I still wonder what end of this story would have been if he was “bending” the tiny Pawnee into a knife edge turn. Fortunately, he landed safely and without further damage to the aircraft. Mainly because this pilot always flies inside the flight envelope of the aircraft. Afterwards, I remembered a video called “Turn Smart”. The video is on YouTube and is highly instructive. Wayne Handley, the pilot in the video, explains some of the circumstances that can lead to a stall and how to get out of it. He makes an interesting observation and I will paraphrase: “Just as an example, I will use the 30-second turn as a reference, simply because it’s easy to do the math. “If we have a morning where we perform 100 turns with an average time of 30 seconds each, and are well on the edge, suppose we back off by 10%, then we have a 33 second turn. The aircraft
will be much more inside the flight envelope. The pilot will be much more comfortable and safer, especially in case of an emergency. Okay, so we added three seconds to those 100 turns. Now, we have 300 seconds added to a working morning. That is only five minutes! It is very easy to recover five minutes of your operation.”
A video called “Turn Smart” is on YouTube and is highly instructive. Wayne Handley, the pilot in the video, explains some of the circumstances that can lead to a stall and how to get out of it. Some pilots still complain about comments that are commonly directed at our profession; like “the agricultural pilot is crazy” or, “these pilots are not afraid of anything”. We know this is not true. If we stop to reflect, some comments that at first glance do inflame some egos. The comments are actually quite pejorative. We should not fly like we want to validate those kind of comments. We are not crazy. We are trained professionals and pay dearly for our training. We have an image to look after. If we have to prove something, it should be relaying our professionalism to those who do not understand what it is that we do.
