Putting more food on the table. Agricultural aviation plays a vital role in increasing the world’s food supply – and it’s time to spread the word. That’s why we’ve launched the Feeding the World campaign. It’s a program designed to build awareness and appreciation for what ag pilots and their aircraft do to bring more food to more tables every day. Those of us in the business may take it for granted – but an increasingly hungry planet simply can’t. No matter what you fly, we’re proud to support you. Because feeding more folks is a cause well worth flying for. For more information on the Feeding the World campaign, or to learn more about our aircraft, visit us online – or call Eric Rojek at 229.789.0437.

A Message from Thrush Aircraft
W You can count on the people and the products of Thrush lasting through storms – both natural and man-made – and emerging stronger on the other side.
ednesday, October 10, was slated to be pretty much like any other day here at the Thrush factory in Albany, Georgia. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans – as by noon, it was clear the day was going to be anything but normal due to the rapid approach of Hurricane Michael and its recorded winds of over 150 mph. The outer bands of the storm reached the city limits by late afternoon, and just before dark all of us here felt its full force as it struck dead center on our little town. Hundred-year-old trees were the first to go – followed by powerlines. When first light dawned on Thursday, it was clear what winds that strong can do, as Albany had been transformed into what some likened to a war zone. Right now, power remains out in the majority of town, and the one constant is the sound of chain saws as workers dice-up fallen trees to clear homes and make roads passible again. However, as with all catastrophic events, this storm brought out the very best in our company and our people. Our factory team rolled up their sleeves and the production line resumed operations on Monday – with no delay in aircraft deliveries. In addition, Thrush teammates are pitching in tirelessly to assist in the community as well – as bouncing back quickly from adversity is what we do. We’re proud to say that courage and resilience are qualities found in every person who builds a Thrush. This should come as no surprise – as these same attributes are part and parcel in the lives of both ag
aircraft builders and those we serve – from pilots, to operators, to growers. And they have certainly been put to the test in the recent business climate. But, like the old country song says:” Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.” And you can count on the people and the products of Thrush lasting through storms – both natural and man-made – and emerging stronger on the other side. Just like feeding the world, it’s in our DNA, and always will be. Speaking of products, NAAA 2018 will mark the ongoing roll-out of some significant new advancements at Thrush – in both the ag and wildfire suppression arenas. Right now, we’re planning on bringing the soon-to-be certified 710P fire-fighting aircraft to the show. Though the recent storm may affect this plan – we can promise this aircraft will exceed everyone’s expectations in performance and durability and we look forward to having you experience it for yourself. You’ll soon see that “game-changer” is not too much of an exaggeration here. We’ll also be sharing the latest on the Electronic Engine and Prop Control (EEPC) that will one day become standard on the 510G. Not only will the EEPC be a leap forward in ease of operation, it will also offer meaningful safety advantages as well – both of which, of course, are hallmarks of every new Thrush aircraft we build. Speaking of safety, our new Training Center just wrapped up its first year of operation. During 2017, we trained more than 100 pilots and more than 200 mechanics at our facility. These numbers exceeded our expectations, and mean there are now that many ➤

Beyond building ever-safer aircraft and providing unmatched training to the crews who fly and maintain them, another key component of our culture will be front and center at the show this year – and that is our support of the Ag Wings of Tomorrow scholarship program. As we’ve said before, if those of us in the industry don’t commit ourselves to helping tomorrow’s ag pilots break into the industry, there one day won’t be an industry. At Thrush, we’re continuing our financial support of this vital program and will be announcing this year’s scholarship recipients at Monday’s kick-off breakfast. Of course, none of this would be possible were it not for the continued support and enthusiasm of our customers worldwide. Helping feed the world remains our most important mission – and each of you has helped us weather every storm in its pursuit. Hurricane Michael will soon be just a memory, while your hard work, dedication and resilience will remain deep in the hearts of everyone here. Thank you. hope you are planning a long and productive week in Reno December 2-6 (official dates are December 3-6) by attending the National Agricultural Aviation Association’s Ag Aviation Expo. Although the exhibit hall does not open until Tuesday, December 4 at noon, a lot will have already happened! For instance, aircraft will be moved into the RenoSparks Convention Center during the early morning hours of Sunday, just before breakfast time. The day will be filled with turbine engine training seminars and a variety of NAAA meetings. The evening will bring, for the first time, the King Pins for PAASS bowling NAAREF fundraiser. It should be a hoot. Read more about it on page 76 of this edition of AgAir Update’s Show Guide. One thing for sure everyone will appreciate at this year’s Ag Aviation Expo in Reno is the sky bridge connecting the host hotel, The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, over to the convention center. Gone are the days of waiting for bus transportation between the hotel and convention center! Attendees can easily walk between the two venues without worrying about weather or catching a ride. Additionally, the Atlantis is home to the two top-rated restaurants in the entire Reno-Lake Tahoe area by TripAdvisor. Additionally, The Spa Atlantis, located in the host hotel, is consistently rated by Spa Finder magazine as one of the top-ten spas in the world. Impressive.
As you browse through the pages of the AgAir Update NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo Show Guide, make a note of what exhibitors are offering at this year’s convention. It is amazing how the ag-aviation industry continues to evolve and expand. By reading exhibitors’ text adjacent to their ads, you will be better prepared to make the most of your limited time while in the exhibit hall. Tag the ones you need to visit. Maybe list them on your smartphone or use the App provided by NAAA. (You can download at event.crowdcompass.com/2018naaa) You don’t have to bring your AgAir Update Show Guide with you to the convention, because another copy will be inserted into your NAAA attendee package! I know from years past that I won’t be able to talk with everyone, but please stop by and visit AgAir Update at booth 745. Besides myself, other members of the AgAir Update team will be there. If you have something special going on that the industry needs to know about, then be sure to let us in on the news. Often our interaction at the NAAA convention sets the stage for next year’s agenda of articles. I look forward to seeing you in Reno, December 2-6, 2018! Until then, Keep Turning…

Numbers Point to a Strong Air Tractor Performance in 2018
W
Air Tractor offers eight different airplane models to fit the needs of ag and firefighting operators.
SG 8 | agairupdate.com
hen you look at the numbers, 2018 is adding up to be another standout year for Air Tractor. With production totals that rank among the highest in its 46-year history, the company is primed to fly into 2019 with momentum. And with news like that, it’s not surprising that Air Tractor’s corporate message for the 2018 NAAA Ag Aviation Expo is “Performance, By-The-Numbers.” “The final tally of airplanes we will produce by the end of 2018 is 143,” says Air Tractor President Jim Hirsch. “And though we’re rightly proud of that figure, it tells only a small part of the overall Air Tractor picture this year.” “Air Tractor’s strength,” Hirsch continued, “and its value to our customers, is the sum total of many numbers. Forty-four years of uninterrupted aircraft production. Over 3,600 airplanes built since 1974. We have 280 employee-owners at the factory involved in manufacturing, engineering, administration and customer support. We offer eight different airplane models to fit the needs of ag and firefighting operators. The number of Air Tractor dealers worldwide has increased to 13, with the addition of Portage Aircraft Specialties in Canada. The number of parts warehoused ready-to-ship and parts orders fulfilled, totals in the hundreds of thousands—ranging from nuts and bolts to landing gear, wing tips, empennages and control surfaces. “We devote thousands of man-hours every year to improving our processes, being more efficient, and ultimately providing a better experience for Air Tractor owners. And over the years, we’ve invested millions of dollars on new manufacturing technology in order to produce better quality, better performing ag aircraft.” One noteworthy number for the company is Air Tractor’s multi-million dollar investment in its stateof-the art electro coat primer facility. “This is a prime example of our commitment to continuous product improvement,” says Vice President of Operations, Rick Turner.” Our e-coat process helps us produce more rugged, more reliable and longer-lasting airplanes. Given chemicals that ag pilots work with, these e-coated parts help to lower maintenance costs
over the life of the airplane.” E-coated parts can be repainted in the field with commonly used aircraft paints and spray systems. “It’s this kind of utility, flexibility and dependability that Air Tractor owners expect. And every day we do our best to deliver it to them.” Rick Turner can back up that statement with numbers. “Air Tractor employees work hundreds of thousands of manufacturing hours in an average year. We are fortunate to have a low employee turnover rate and as a result our employees have a combined total of 3,600+ years of service at Air Tractor. In 2017, our employees produced 1,057,493 detail parts, assemblies and sub-assemblies in facilities that now total 5.5 acres under roof.” But what about the most important numbers for ag aircraft operators—actual airplane performance? President Jim Hirsch leans into that question, “The Air Tractor 502XP illustrates that performance point” he says. “We like to say that we’ve taken our 500-series airplane to the next level with the XP. It’s an airplane designed to perform in high, hot operating conditions. For many operators, the XP provides the extra power to boost productivity when highdensity altitude challenges aircraft performance. It can carry a full 500-gallon load day after day. The 867-horsepower engine, 4-blade prop and surehandling airframe together help pilots cover more acres in less time, get to the job with faster ferry times and reduce pilot fatigue on long, hot days.” Yet another number that’s significant: “Roughly 50% of Air Tractor’s 143 airplanes produced this year will be exported to countries all around the globe. And those airplanes are supported by eight international Air Tractor dealers with in-country sales, parts and maintenance capability that’s second to none.” There’s one final number worth noting. Three Air Tractor airplanes will be on display during the Ag Aviation Expo Trade Show Tuesday and Wednesday. Visitors to the Air Tractor exhibits can get an up-close look at AT-802A and 502XP ag planes provided by Air Tractor dealer Lane Aviation and an AT-802F Fire Boss made available by Air Spray Air Tankers in Chico, California. For more information about Air Tractor airplanes, point your web browser to airtractor.com.

Reap the Rewards of NAAA’s 2018 Ag Aviation Expo December 3–6 in Reno!
O In a few short weeks we will be returning to a revitalized and energized version of one of our longtime convention destinations: Reno, Nevada.
SG 10 | agairupdate.com
n behalf of the National Agricultural Aviation Association, we would like to invite all AgAir Update readers to the 2018 Ag Aviation Expo. NAAA’s expo is your one-stop shop for experiencing the professional rejuvenation that comes from networking, learning and engaging with the agricultural aviation industry’s best operators, pilots and service providers. In a few short weeks we will be returning to a revitalized and energized version of one of our longtime convention destinations: Reno, Nevada. The city of Reno has benefited from a major renaissance since our last convention there in 2013. It has become ground zero for a new technology boom, as a wave of tech companies, including Tesla, Apple Cloud and a Microsoft division, have moved there, which in turn has sparked a surge in new restaurants, nightclubs, microbreweries and shopping, all shadowed by the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range. NAAA has contracted with a new host hotel for our return to Reno. The Atlantis Casino Resort Spa is a first-class hotel of the highest order and just a walking bridge away from the NAAA Trade Show. Our room rate is $109 per night, but you’ll have to act fast—the cutoff date for NAAA’s room block is Nov. 12. Book online at AgAviation.org/hotel or call the Atlantis at (800) 723-6500 and reference the NAAA Convention (SNAA18). It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran operator, a fledging ag pilot or an allied supplier to the ag aviation industry, you won’t find a better venue than the Ag Aviation Expo to help you achieve your professional goals and business objectives. The world’s largest agricultural aviation expo offers countless opportunities to conduct business, visit with friends and colleagues and learn about cutting-
edge technologies and products. With nearly 25 hours of educational programming, a full trade show floor and an expected 1,400 aerial application professionals, you’ll be in good company when you join us in Reno. Our theme this year is advocating for the industry and we have some great speakers to inform you about how to effectively advocate for agriculture and the aerial application industry. The inspiration begins at our Kickoff Breakfast on Dec. 3 where you’ll hear from Greg Peterson of the YouTube sensation the Peterson Farm Brothers. Greg and his family have been very successful at using humor, music and other bridge-building devices to positively communicate about agriculture to the public through social media and other avenues. Greg founded the “Peterson Farm Brothers” with his siblings in 2012. Since then, their YouTube videos have reached more than 50 million people and led to an increased role in agricultural advocacy for Greg. He has now given over 300 speaking presentations in 40 states and eight countries and is passionate about the future of the agriculture industry. The Dec. 4 General Session will feature speakers to help you advocate the benefits of aerial application. If you’ve ever had to defend aerial application in your community, on social media, during an interview or in a courtroom, you know the importance of being able to represent our industry in a positive light. Enhance your communication skills by attending this session. Several educational sessions are on tap throughout the week, including the Aerial Application Technology Research Session and programming focused on low-level obstacles, crop protection products, helicopters, engines, and safety and federal aviation regulations, just to name a few.
SHOW GUIDE
Sessions from aircraft manufacturers Air Tractor and Thrush, as well as several company sessions, also are being offered. The PAASS presenters—our roving safety instructors—will moderate Compaass Rose, an information-sharing session geared toward low-time and prospective ag pilots on Dec. 2 and Dec. 5. NAAREF will host the “Ask the Expert” Speed Mentoring Session on Dec. 3. This fast-paced orientation session for new and prospective ag pilots consists of a series of speed mentoring rounds led by experienced operators and pilots, insurance representatives and ag schools. We also recommend the NAAREF Safety Session Dec. 6 no matter what your level of experience is as an aerial applicator. NAAREF will tackle the topic of fatigue at that session. The Aerial Application Technology Research Session, which follows the Kickoff Breakfast, is the R&D portion of the convention. Industry researchers will cover a number of “new” tools and information ready to use as part of your everyday operations. Full descriptions are available at AgAviation.org/ asabesession. Several states are granting CEUs for this session. For specific solutions for your business look no further than NAAA’s trade show Dec. 4-5. The world’s largest agricultural aviation trade show brings buyers and sellers of aerial application-related products, supplies and services together under one roof. Reno’s convention center is blessed with ample show space, large trade show doors and close access to the Reno airport—three ingredients that work in aircraft exhibitors’ favor. As such, nine aircraft will be on display, along with 150
exhibiting companies, at the NAAA Trade Show. Don’t miss the fun of the Live Auction, which happens to be our biggest fundraiser. Along with a new PT6A-34AG engine from Pratt & Whitney Canada and a three-blade Hartzell Propeller from Air Tractor, several other great items are up for bid. Visit AgAviation.org/auctions for a list of all the auction items. The action gets underway at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 4. Throughout the week, there will be no shortage of opportunities to network and make new acquaintances. From the Dec. 3 Welcome Reception to the Dec. 6 Farewell Reception, you’ll be able to attend a different reception nearly every night. Finally, we encourage you to make plants to attend the Excellence in Ag Aviation Banquet Dec. 6, where we will honor a slate of distinguished awardees for their impressive contributions to the industry. Download the NAAA Ag Aviation Expo App to stay up to date onsite. The app features the full schedule of events, a list of available CEUs, auction items, an interactive NAAA Trade Show floor map and more! Learn more at AgAviation.org/expoapp. That’s just a small taste of what you’ll find at the 2018 Ag Aviation Expo. There is much more information within these pages and on NAAA’s website at AgAviation.org. Please join us for what promises to be an unforgettable week! Register for NAAA’s 2018 Ag Aviation Expo using the registration form found in this Show Guide or go to AgAviation. org. Register by Nov. 3 for the prices listed. Beginning Nov. 4 and onsite, registration fees will be $50 more per registration.

Field Results Show it Pays to Take Control™ by Dennis Gardisser, WRK of Arkansas, dgardisser@wrkofar.com
Control™ has also been one of the top contenders in replicated research evaluations under a wide range of operating speeds and setups.
I
It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, but every once in a while, I come upon something that is worth repeating. I’m sure many of you have heard the 80-10-10 story that I tell when it comes to drift reduction products: 80 percent of the time nothing happens, 10 percent of the time the result is worse, and 10 percent of the time there is a definite improvement. For years, Arkansas Operation S.A.F.E. clinics have included one day of field evaluations of locally favored drift mitigation aids. The data has been quite sporadic and probably a reflection of the variety of setups, weather conditions, mixing procedures, and operating variables. With all that said, Control™ from GarrCo Products, Inc. has consistently shown positive results. Control™ has also been one of the top contenders in replicated research evaluations under a wide range of operating speeds and setups. Unsolicited applicator comments like: “Best
CONTROL DUO LS™ provides two great products – CONTROL WM™ deposition aid/drift mitigation adjuvant and a unique NIS in one easy-to-use package.
material I’ve ever used”, “Very easy to mix and load”, “I see improved efficacy” and “The material that I used to get on the windshield is gone” add validity to Control’s real world performance. Mixing and compatibility are one of the major issues with any drift reduction additive. Arkansas operators attest to the ease of mixing with Control™ under a wide range of solution characteristics. There are a lot of products available for drift mitigation and application efficiency. I encourage every applicator to check out all available data and select a product that has been thoroughly evaluated for optimum performance. Visit our booth 845 in Reno.
BENEFITS ■ Contains a unique, highly effective NIS blend that enhances pesticide uptake while not increasing the number of fine droplets as most NIS and oils do. ■ Contains CONTROL WM™ proven in many research and field trials to be superior at mitigating drift and increasing deposition.
Without CONTROL™
■ Multiple independent trials demonstrate a 2X higher retention of the spray solution on plant surfaces. ■ Significantly lowers evaporation of the spray droplet ■ Satisfies most label requirements for surfactant and drift adjuvant. Its higher ratio of polymer to surfactant is designed for aerial application at a low cost.

Lightspeed Aviation Offers an Active Noise Reduction (ANR) System for Helmets
A
viation provides the perfect noise environment for the benefits of Active Noise Reduction (ANR). Excellent at reducing the sound of the lower frequencies, ANR is a great match to the noise environment of both fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft. Over the past 20+ years this technology has exploded in the aviation headset market, but for aviators that wear helmets while they fly, the options have been limited. Enter Lightspeed, a company that introduced its first ANR aviation headset and quickly became one of the leading brands in the category. After many requests from pilots for a Lightspeed system design for helmets, the company decided to take on the challenge. Their product, dubbed “Zulu H-Mod,” is a ground-up project designed
SG 20 | agairupdate.com
for helmets. Based on the legacy of the company’s popular Zulu family of headsets, it boasts many of the features of the headsets while adding specific features unique to helmet installations. In addition to top caliber ANR, the installation is designed for comfort. Lightspeed uses conformal foam in the ear seals that provide both a great seal and a personally comfortable fit. The shape of the ear seals is also designed for comfortable use with prescription glasses or sunglasses. The Zulu H-Mod helmet installation puts a priority on durability and incorporates a Kevlar centered cable system for both the internal wiring and the external cable that interfaces with the aircraft. Lightspeed’s exclusive quick disconnect is designed for fast, safe egress without removing the helmet.
It has a 9-pound pull force (4 kg) and makes emergency egress even safer. With acoustic technology at the core, the Lightspeed engineering team takes great pride in how the system sounds. Your intercom transmissions will be very clear and if you choose to use the Bluetooth feature for music you’ll be amazed at how good your tunes sound. The Zulu H-Mod system is backed by a three-year factory warranty from Lightspeed and can be added to an existing helmet or included with the purchase of a new one. The system is available from select installers that have been trained and certified. A list of certified installers are available at LightspeedAviation.com/helmets and a few of them will have the product on display at the upcoming NAAA show in Reno, Nevada.

Impressive Results at AERO Innovations
A
ero Innovations has been installing the “LoadMaster” 4-blade propeller since 2015. With over 40 installations the results have been nothing short of impressive. The propeller provides an additional increase of up to 233.6 equivalent shaft horsepower, up to 584 ft lbs increase in thrust, shorter takeoff distance and increased climb rate. Our propellers are now flying in New Zealand, South Africa, Australia and Guatemala. We recently received approval for installation in Canada. Aero Innovations has acquired the STC for the Record Intake for the Thrush installation. A new filter system has been developed to make filter change and cleaning much easier. You will be able to change the filter on your plane as easily as changing your furnace filter! Come by the booth so we can give you a demonstration.
All pros... All pros, no cons - better take off performance, more pull in turns, smoother, quieter, better ground handling, moves aircraft CG forward, Hartzell reliability and service. Great prop! Adam Meyerkorth, Meyerkorth Aviation, Rock Port, MO
A different plane... This prop made my N5680X a completely different airplane. If you operate a PT6 up to -42 Thrush or Air Tractor, you should really consider upgrading to Aero Innovations LLC Loadmaster Propeller System and get the “DAWG” out of your ag plane! Patrick Andrews, Coleman, GA
Do it again... After putting the prop on I have to say I would recommend it to anyone thinking about trying it out. I gained every bit of the 500-foot takeoff difference promised and also cut down my turn time while heavy. The plane fly’s like a whole different animal now. I am extremely pleased with the turn out and would do it again in a heartbeat. Tommy Deterding, Carrier, OK

Eagle Vistas Makes Move to Larger Facilities to Better Serve Our Students! Eagle Vistas has just moved to Inverness Airport in Inverness, Florida (KINF). Working from a 12,000-sq foot hangar, we have space for airplanes for training from Private, Commercial, Instrument and Ag Training. Helicopter ag and turbine transitions scheduled upon request. This location provides easy access from either Orlando or Tampa International Airports. We train year round in Florida. Eagle Vistas was the subject of a feature article in Sport Aviation magazine of the EAA that was published in the August 2018 issue for members and distributed at AirVenture along with a video produced by EAA about Eagle Vistas. Both the article and video can be found on our web-site: www:eaglevistas.com. We are very honored this year to have been chosen by quite a few commercial ag operators to provide ag pilot training to their 2nd and 3rd generation ag pilot sons, grandsons, and nephews. We also had students from operators that have sent us more than one ag student. When questioned why an ag school and why Eagle Vistas, their reply to us was, “We don’t want to leave anything out!” They said they were impressed with our Ag Pilot Minimum standards and the value of setting professional standards for ag pilots. Eagle Vistas graduates are apprentice ag pilots ready to be deployed with a basic foundation and be trained in a commercial ag operation. We also have minimum standards for helicopter ag training. Turbine transition training is available in either a dual cockpit Thrush or dual control Air Tractor. Ask our graduates about us! Davidon Keeping Focused with DRP-955 DRP-955 is a highly efficient adjuvant. Its proprietary ingredients make it an all-in-one adjuvant for the aerial and ground applicator. DRP-955 acts as an anti-evaporant to reduce spray drift. This places more chemical on target, thereby increasing deposition. Due to this and DRP-955’s UV protection and bonding ability, the application is more effective. It also works as a penetrator, spreader and sticker. Studies at the University of Georgia have indicated a 20% increase in deposition when using DRP-955. Several universities including, the University of Arkansas and Michigan State University, all reported similar results. Real world testimonies from pilots claim no longer is spray deposition on the windscreen, a problem during return spray passes. DRP-955 comes in 2.5-gallon plastic containers. Also, it is a true solution adjuvant that stays mixed. It will not clog nozzles nor will it turn into a clabber-like mix, even if it is overdosed. DRP-955 is a reasonably priced solution to drift. With so many other advantages, it is well worth the money. Please stop by our booth #1135 and enter to win a free case.

Cascade hits the “sweet spot” with the P&WC PT6A-41/42 850 SHP STC kits to upgrade the 500-gallon Thrush and Air Tractor AT-502/502B aircraft. This STC upgrade increases your acres per hour and the profitability of your business. Operating ag aircraft at higher elevations or higher temperatures is where this upgrade will really increase productivity. The PT6A-41/42 turbine from P&WC has been the foundation that has made the King Air B200 the most successful business aircraft in the world. The prolific success of the King Air has made the PT6A-41/42 engines, parts and pricing readily available. The increase in performance for Cascade’s earlier STC for the Air Tractor AT502/502B and now the 500-gallon Thrush models is significant. The PT6A-41/42 maintains continuous 850 SHP up to 106° OAT which increases safety margins and eliminates downloading on high temperature days. The 850 SHP turbine is the power “sweet” spot for the 500-gallon ag aircraft. This conversion kit is complete with the Cascade Pressure Cowl which has been proven to deliver more clean air and protects the turbine in harsh environments, reducing ITT temps and fuel consumption. The Pressure Cowl also delivers on maintenance with easy access to service both the air filtration and the fuel nozzles with no FOD

“Make Loading a Dream” with Mixmate
B
e sure to check in with us at this year’s NAAA Ag Aviation Expo. We have new product announcements to be unveiled at the show! The modularity of Mixmate has led to many different types of system setups from basic flowmeter measuring systems to dual inductor systems for measurement of all products by weight. The jug processing capabilities of Mixmate cannot be matched by any other system in the industry. A comment from one of our customers, “We do a large amount of totes but also a fair amount of jugs. They have an automatic chem inductor that weighs as you pour. No more measuring jugs or guessing. The tablet tells you the target and lets you know when you have enough. So slick and wicked fast.” Many aerial applicators have to deal with a mountain of jugs every year. No other system offers the speed of processing jugs with automated recordkeeping. One of our competitors even stopped by for a demo this summer at a show and got a big smile when he saw the jug process in person. We talk about jugs since our process is unique and fast. We also handle bulk products at the same time. Many mobile systems prefer to use our flowmeters for the bulk products. We
use a gear type flowmeter that does not need to be recalibrated for each type of chemical and our customers are pleased with the accuracy. Another customer comment, “Two things, it’s exact. No system I’ve seen can come even close to the same level of accuracy. Which leads to second point, it’s stress free. Fully automatic calculations and mixing make loading the sprayer a dream. Push a button and it’s done. I’ll never mix manually again, ever!” The other option for measuring bulk chemicals is by weight. A dual inductor system works well for large quantities of bulk chemicals. A typical system would have a small Mixmate inductor to handle the jugs and small quantities of bulk products with a large inductor to measure the high volume products. Both inductors with all the chemical and fertilizer inputs would be controlled by the Mixmate system. Multiple product tanks would be routed to the inductors and the output could go directly to the aircraft or to multiple batch tanks. We look forward to meeting you soon and to help find a solution for you. Together we can make loading the sprayer a dream! Visit us in Reno, Booths 812, 814 and Booth 813.

Kawak Aviation Technologies – Committed to Customer Success Kawak Aviation (Formerly Ag Air Systems) was founded in 1993 in Bend, Oregon USA. That year, Kawak founders Doug Sawyer and Mike Reightley, utilizing decades of experience in the fluid power industry created the first electro proportional auxiliary hydraulic power system for spray equipment on agricultural aircraft. In 1994, Kawak developed turbine-engine conversions for the Thrush and a few years later the Dromader utilizing TPE331 engines. As part of these conversions our first throttle quadrants were born. In 1996, we designed an auxiliary hydraulic system for the Bell OH-58 helicopter. This design was quickly adapted to the B206B. It was the first and to this day the only reliable variable hydraulic drive for these rotary wing
aircraft and can potentially quadruple productivity over standard electric systems. A string of auxiliary hydraulic systems followed over the years including the S2R, AT802, Bell 47, Hiller, SA315B Lama, Bell 212/ 412/205, Hughes 500, Bell UH-B, H, L, & K, Sikorsky S64E & F, Sikorsky S-61, Kaman K-1200, CH-47D Chinook, CH54B Sky Crane, and more. In 2004, Air Repair Inc. and Kawak began a collaborative effort to develop a system that would give applicators all of the benefits of hydraulic control at a lower price point by utilizing an electro/ hydraulic power unit. The system was designed primarily for dry flow control operation. However, the intention was to have a single power unit that could power not only the dry gate, but the boom valve, hopper door and flaps or
any combination as well. A modular system with the ability to have additional functions layered on depending on applicator preference, the Rx Gate System has been field proven since 2006 with over 100 systems sold. This year Kawak is celebrating its 25th anniversary. We’re not just celebrating 25 years of being in business, but 25 years of supporting and innovating solutions for our customers in the aerial agriculture industry. We are proud not just of what we do, but how we do it. Whether it is developing innovative products and services, or investing in our people and future workforce, our goal is to provide our customers with the best possible products and service. Storm Aeronautics… “Keeping Ag Aviation Great”
S
torm Aeronautics continues to diversify by adding new products to our lineup. New for 2018 is the Custom Air Tail Wheel. The new single-arm tailwheel for 802 and 602 Air Tractors replaces an upper bushing in existing housing with a bearing/ race combination to achieve a smoother/tighter ride and eliminate excessive vibration. Easy maintenance and increased protection with the addition of an inner and outer hubcap to protect wheel from chemical and fertilizer. We have them in stock. Our goal at Storm Aeronautics was to bring current glass technology to ag aviation and that is what we did. Last year we sold over 200 Storm Shields and didn’t have one report of breakage of glass or even cracking upon impact of foreign objects (birds). We did however have a few people comment to us that they hit birds and ducks with impressive results. The Storm Shield is chemical and scratch resistant with tremendous clarity. This STC covers all Air Tractor models that have a center
windshield, which is the 400-800 series. The 504 is included since it has a single piece windshield. All Thrush models are included in the STC. Storm Cutters continue to be very popular with Air Tractor owners. From 1995-2013, there were 1,791 FAA Part 137 accidents (Agricultural Aviation) in the US. Of those total accidents, 218 were collisions with wires which made up 12.2% of the accidents. Within those 1,791 accidents, 173 were fatal of which 30 were the results of wire strikes. 17.3% of all fatalities in ag aviation were linked to a wire strike. Storm Cutters dramatically help to mitigate risk in the event of a wire strike (NTSB data compiled by the NAAA). We have over 300 sets of Storm Cutters in service since we received approval from the FAA three years ago. Throughout the summer we get random texts, emails and sometimes a phone call telling us how well the cutters work. We feel as though this is an essential piece of safety equipment. We haven’t forgotten about the Ag-Cat owners. In 2018,

we were able to produce new 1 1/16” main landing gear and new heavy tail springs for Ag-Cats. We also have a like new C model Ag-Cat air frame (firewall aft) that will be completed by the end of the year. This factory 500-gallon Ag-Cat is serial number 43. There were only 44 C models ever produced. Upon completion of the C model, we will be working on a like new 400-gallon Super B. Both are for sale. Our goal in 2019 is to have a production line of rebuilds focusing on the Super B for now. We are currently working with the FAA to certify and PMA certain air frame parts that are becoming very difficult to find for Ag-Cats. Last but not least, we have a new T-Shirt line at Storm Aeronautics called “Keeping Ag Aviation Great”. There are three different designs with three different types of aircraft (Ag-Cat, Air Tractor and Thrush). Guess who is flying the aircraft? We have various sizes that range from Youth, Medium, up through XXXXL. We will have them at the show for sale. Thank you to all our customers for making 2018 another successful year at Storm Aeronautics and we look forward to 2019 for another exciting and productive year.

Top 5 Reasons – Looking at GE’s H Series Engines The GE H Series turboprop family combines enhanced performance and operability with maintenance simplicity to deliver rugged, reliable power for a range of applications. GE is incorporating sophisticated technologies into the H Series to advance a legacy of reliable power for turboprop aircraft.
Top five reasons to choose GE’s H Series turboprop engines: Minimal Routine Maintenance: With its simplified scheduled maintenance regimen and rugged design, the H Series engine is ideally suited to the intense demands of ag aviation. The H Series features recurrent 300-hour and 900-hour inspections and low levels of consumables, allowing operators to spend fewer resources on maintenance and be more productive during their busy season. Sustained Power on Hot Days: With the H Series engines, operators have more sustained power on hot days and higher elevations. The H80 turboprop is flat rated for takeoff at 800 SHP (sea level) up to 105°F. This allows for full load takeoffs on hot days, helping Thrush 510G operators to maintain their productivity throughout the hot summer months. Fuel Burn Advantage: Ag operators with experience in multiple aircraft report that H80 engines burn less fuel than other engines under similar conditions. While individual results may vary, even minor fuel savings over a long season will increase operational efficiency and add to the bottom line. No Fuel Nozzles: Featuring an internal fuel slinger ring and no external fuel nozzles, the H Series engine is free from recurrent fuel nozzle inspection and replacement. Free from spending time and money on fuel nozzle removal, flow checks SG 36 | agairupdate.com
and cleaning, H Series operators can focus on being more productive. No Hot Section Inspection: In addition to the internal fuel slinger, the H Series engine features higher temperature materials in the engine combustor and high pressure turbine. As a result, the H Series engine has no required Hot Section Inspection (HSI) and no hardware replacement at the overhaul mid-point. For operators it means the engine remains on -wing until the overhaul.
The Bottom Line The H Series engine offers more capability, lower maintenance and lower operating costs than any other comparable engine. This means that operators will benefit from less time in the hangar absorbing cost and more time in the air generating revenue. GE Aviation, an operating unit of GE (NYSE: GE), is a worldleading provider of jet and turboprop engines, components and integrated systems for commercial, military, business and general aviation aircraft. GE Aviation has a global service network to support these offerings. Visit us in booth #1117 in Reno, Nevada.

NAAREF Safety Session The 2018 NAAREF Safety Session will address fatigue, which has been an ongoing problem for agricultural aviators. Aerial application often requires working long hours to complete crop protection operations before the opportunity is lost. In addition to working long hours, busy parts of the season can result in a continuous run of long working days, further increasing the likelihood of fatigue. The NTSB conducted a study on the safety of agricultural aircraft operations and identified fatigue management as an important threat to ag pilots. Dr. Mark J. Ivey, a recognized expert in sleep medicine and a Senior Air Medical Examiner, will present insights into the effect of fatigue on a pilot’s ability to perform tasks required to safely operate an aircraft. Suggestions will be given about recognizing and coping with this potentially deadly threat to safety.

AeroFlow Systems Expanding Product Line AeroFlow Systems, known for its innovative AFS Check Valve since 1996, is expanding its product line with three new quality products for aerial applicators. AFS BOOM SHUT-OFF VALVE: Completely new design and made specifically for agricultural aircraft, the AFS boom shut-off valve is light weight at only 6 lbs. It is machined from aluminum and treated with an AFS proprietary coating which means a long maintenance-free life. The AFS boom shut-off valve can cycle from on to off in .47 seconds. It’s available in 24-volt and is controlled from a switch panel in the cockpit. Typically, installations can be from one to up to four valves per aircraft. Right or left outboard shut-off and/ or right or left complete boom shut-off, or any combination. The AFS Boom shut-off valve can be permanently mounted on the AFS spray boom or can be purchased as a separate Cam-Loc mounted unit. AFS HOPPER SHUT-OFF VALVE: AeroFlow Systems is also introducing a new hopper shutoff valve. It’s light weight, machined from aluminum and treated with AFS proprietary coatings which insures a long and useful life. The AFS hopper shut-off valve is a direct replacement for currently installed, competitive models. The AFS hopper shut-off is designed to function when you need it most and will not corrode or freeze and it is not dependent on a o-ring. It can be attached to the cable currently installed on most aircraft. AFS “EXTENDED LIFE” SPRAY BOOMS: AeroFlow Systems is also introducing new specially designed AFS “Extended Life” spray booms which are treated inside and outside with AFS proprietary coatings. Tired of struggling with unending corrosion from aluminum spray booms and cracking from heavy stainless steel booms? Check out the AFS “Extended Life” spray booms and start getting the return on your investment that you expect from spray booms. Better yet, have your booms custom made by adding the AFS Boom shut-off valves welded into both the spray boom and center section.
AFS Proprietary Coatings: Is it worth the investment? Visit us at booth 1131 in Reno.

SHOW GUIDE
Articulating Aerial Application to All - Tuesday General Session Guides on Representing Agricultural Aviation in a Positive LIght Protect your livelihood by proselytizing your livelihood in this vitally important general session to strengthen your ability to effectively communicate the benefits of aerial application. A majority of the population doesn’t understand how their food is grown and produced, or how ag pilots contribute to the world’s food supply. If you’ve ever had to defend aerial application in your local community, on social media, during an interview or in a courtroom, you know the importance of being able to represent our industry in a positive light. Attend the NAAA General Session on Tuesday, Dec. 4, to hear from experts in their fields as they address the following topics. 1. Learn more about consumer attitudes toward food, biofuel production and forest protection and how to have a successful conversation with consumers who might not understand our industry and its practices. You’ll be provided with research that helps you to understand how and who consumers trust, what they believe and how they find credibility in aerial application industry advocates. 2. As our world encounters challenges such as a changing climate and growing population, crop protection products will continue to be a crucial component of the sciencebased approach to meeting the food needs of the world’s masses amid increasing challenges from Mother Nature and the need to preserve natural resources. Learn about the importance and balance that crop protection products bring to environmental sustainability, which is on the mind of many consumers. 3. Society needs more agriculture and food production knowledge, which would allow consumers to make decisions with science in mind. Speakers will refer to industry issues and explore what has and has not worked in consumer dialogue about aerial application, what arguments were encountered, message development, etc. so you can effectively communicate the positive impacts of aerial application. 4. Everyone in the aerial application industry must communicate with policy makers to ensure that our regulatory environment doesn’t handcuff our industry. Learn how you can have an impact in local, state and federal governments by lobbying and communicating effectively with political leaders and regulators.
Speakers ANTHONY LAFAUCE, PORTER NOVELLI—Anthony LaFauce is vice president of the Digital Communications Group at Porter Novelli . He specializes in creating multi-tiered issues management programs that use social media as a barometer for issues management. AgPilotX is here Someone has created a completely innovative and alternative, market-changing guidance system, that is radically different than anything on the market today. It’s called AgPilotX and it is created by Insero, a 4-year old company based in Tempe, Arizona.AgPilot X consists of three components: 1. Lightbar, 2. Hub, 3. Apple device – that’s it. The Lightbar, the Hub and the Apple device (the entirety of the system) all use Bluetooth and WiFi for communication. Apple enabled AgPilotX runs through any Apple device. Insero leverages Apple in all its products, providing the AgPilotX with Apple iPad Pros. But realize that AgPilotX can be run through your own device, or from the phone in your pocket, or from your child’s iPod. The bad news? – this app is completely different than any software you have ever used in a guidance system. Everything runs off the mapping screen. No need to memorize complicated keystrokes or play a guessing game of where you need to go in the menu/setup/keypad/function key layout. Run everything right from the mapping screen. And welcome to swiping – if you want to move something on the screen, just press on the screen and move it. And, get your updates automatically through the Apple App store. No more worrying if you have the latest software or trying to update products through USB sticks or PCMCIA Cards. Insero employs both GPS and GLONASS. GPS/GNSS receiver and antenna integrated into the Lightbar No more tethering a Lightbar through a CPU to the cockpit canopy or running GPS from a separate computer. DynaNav An Aviation Technology Company Just like our ad, our team is busy working on new innovations, integrations and product development. As well, our product support, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, our team of engineers, innovators, aerial applicators and partner agricultural and technology companies are constantly creating solutions for the aerial ag industry. As we are exclusively an aviation technology company, we are able to keep our focus on the complete picture from the pilots’ and operators’ perspective to their customers’ needs in aerial agriculture application technology. Simple solutions such as our solid state DynaPressure Boom Pressure and GPS marking instrument bring reliability to the pilot, as well as the accuracy of the GPS data that is being stored. Also, our DynaFlow flow control has this pressure sensor technology built in and supplied as part of the system. Looking forward, our DynaFlight GPS system was originally designed and continued to maintain the architecture to be a true HUD (Heads Up Display). That being said the technology to do
SG 62 | agairupdate.com
this at a reasonable price is in the process of being developed. Needless to say, there is a book of challenges to meet the criteria of a true HUD system in the aerial ag aircraft. Being committed for 20 years to this project, we have slowly eliminated the challenges and believe that our upcoming HUD solution will meet or exceed the needs of the ag pilot. With our new generation Vektor MAX system having resounding market acceptance around the globe, we are now merging the traditional DynaFlight system with the Vektor MAX technology to create the DynaFlight III GPS Guidance system. This DynaFlight III system will have the integrated touchscreen computer with the Vektor style interface as well as the DynaFlight guidance display with the DynaGrip user interface. The system will be lightweight and extremely simple to install and will have all the features offered by both systems. Seeing is believing, so we hope to see you at the trade shows during this winter to experience all the advantages of the DynaNav technology solutions for the aerial agriculture industry.

(L-R) Brothers Mark and Grant Lane and Logan Lane, son of Grant.
Celebrating Over 70 Years Lane Aviation, Inc. is excited to be celebrating its 73rd year in business. Our company prides itself on maintaining ethical business practices that translate into integrity for every facet of Lane Aviation. We believe this honesty is what has gained the trust of so many valued customers and allowed us to become the leading Air Tractor distributor for sales, service and support. Lane Aviation’s association with agricultural application began with George Lane and Leland Snow in College Station, Texas in 1957; Leland was demonstrating the S-2A. George gave Leland a deposit on one of the first five built! Shortly thereafter, Lane Aviation became a dealer for Snow Aircraft. Therefore, when Leland Snow developed Air Tractor, Lane Aviation’s business relationship with Snow was already well established. In 1974, Lane Aviation was selected as the first Air Tractor dealer and has since sold more than anyone else in the world. Lane Aviation has always been a family-run company. George’s sons are both still actively involved in the company. Grant Lane serves as the president of Lane Aviation and Mark Lane as chief pilot in the agricultural operations department. Grant SG 66 | agairupdate.com
has now brought a third generation to the business, and with it, a fresh perspective. Grant’s son, Logan Lane, is a commercially rated pilot with experience ranging from Air Tractors to cabin class aircraft. Relying on Grant’s life-long experience in the ag aviation business, Logan is learning how customers have come to count on Grant’s highly personalized customer service skills. Whether a customer is upgrading their Air Tractor fleet, making a transition to Air Tractors, or moving to a turbine powered aircraft, Grant is there to offer help and advice along the way. Lane Aviation operates from its airport in Rosenberg, Texas (T54), Lane Air Park. The maintenance facility is capable of handling nearly every type of Air Tractor maintenance. This includes annual and periodic inspections, major airframe repairs and engine exchanges. The ability to perform up to and including hot section inspections, as well as great business relationships with dedicated engine shops, keeps the customer well taken care of. With Air Tractor factory training and FAAcertified A&P and IA mechanics, the highest quality work can always be assured. Also located at Lane Air Park is the fully stocked parts department of Lane
Aviation. Not only is it essential to have parts on hand to facilitate repairs made in the maintenance shop, but it’s paramount to have an extensive inventory readily available to ship to our customers. Lane Aviation has maintained its spraying operation since 1948. With one AT-802A serving farmers and ranchers in nearby areas, we not only know how to best respond to ag operators’ needs, but also helps us understand what it means to be AOG. Lane Aviation works diligently to make sure our customers get their required parts as quickly as possible. Whether a customer is two towns over or on another continent, Lane Aviation has the experience and expertise to get them back in the air. Lane Aviation, Inc. will be proudly exhibiting at NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo in Reno, Nevada, December 3-6. We invite everyone to stop by booth #816 for free draft beer and good Texas conversation. Be sure to ask about our special convention sale prices for our industry-leading Lane brakes and fans. The Lane brake and fan combination for spray pumps has been proven to be as rugged and reliable as they come. See y’all in Reno!

Small Town Service and the Best Rates Kimmel Aviation Insurance arose in 1972 from a need to write hard-tofind and much needed insurance on cropdusters. The insurance side of the business started very pragmatically as customers were coming to the Kimmel Aviation Ag Aircraft dealership to trade in their $500 converted Super Cubs and Stearmans for the more productive and shiny new Cessna Ag Wagons and Ag Trucks. The $20,000 price tag and the ever evolving regulatory environment in the early 1970s mandated that all certified applicators must carry a minimum liability insurance policy or a bond of $10,000. Cessna Finance also wanted to make sure their loans were protected. Very few companies would insure ag aircraft back in the early 1970s. So Dorothy Kimmel made it her mission to find that coverage for their customers. From its humble beginnings, the insurance part of the business grew and in 1972 formally incorporated Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency, Inc.. Over the years, Dorothy Kimmel has received numerous industry awards including, but not limited to MAAA Outstanding Service Award – 1975, MAAA President’s Award – 1985, WMAAA President, 15 years WMAAA Director to the WNAAA, WNAAA Vice Pres. 1991, WNAAA President 1992, Lee Abide Award – 1998, Arkansas (AAAA) Distinguished service award 2006, MAAA Honorary Lifetime Membership Award – 2006. In addition, Dorothy also served on numerous committees and served both the NAAA and MAAA for each

of her 45+ years as a member of both organizations. Her most outstanding achievement was to raise a family of four boys, all who entered the ag aviation field and chose career paths closely related to ag aviation. Although Dorothy is still active in the agency, her youngest son, Frank Kimmel, took over the day to day operations of Kimmel Aviation Insurance Agency in 2004. Frank brings with him 14,000 hours of flying experience including 8000+ as an ag pilot. Frank also has his own pedigree of accomplishments including , 1992 John Horne Memorial Safety award (NAAA), Novartis Leadership training delegate – 1998, NAAA Related Service Award – 2008, Arkansas (AAAA) Outstanding Service Award 2008, and the MAAA Allied Industry Associate of the year 2010. In addition to the ag association awards, Frank was elected by his aviation insurance peers to serve on the Aviation Insurance Association (AIA) Board of Directors in 2005. He served as the Director of the Domestic Agents and Brokers Division until he was elected Vice President of the AIA in 2009 and then AIA President for 2011 – 2012. As you can see, it is true when their ads say, “When you need a respected voice to work for you, “The Kimmel’s Have You Covered”!” Visit us in booth 309 in Reno.

Kiwi Technology Launches Advanced Autonomous Unmanned Utility Vehicle
The aircraft commenced flight testing in early May 2018 and will be ready for customer deployments in Q1 of 2019.
SG 70 | agairupdate.com
Kiwi Technologies is proud to announce the launch of the world’s most advanced autonomous, unmanned utility vehicle for aerial application. With a quarter ton payload, the Kiwi K1200 Automatic Aerial Applicator is an order of magnitude larger and more capable than existing drones. The K1200 has more than ten times the carrying capacity and twenty times the application rate of the next largest unmanned spray drone and is precise, autonomous and inexpensive to operate. These numbers allow for true unmanned aerial application capabilities. The aircraft commenced flight testing in early May 2018 and will be ready for customer deployments in Q1 of 2019. Equipped with a fully electric powertrain, the Kiwi AUV can deliver aerial application in a precise, quiet and economical way. These vehicles are coupled with a state-of-the-art ground supercharging station that charges the craft while refilling the payload. The easy-to-use flight planner and continuous data gathering allow Kiwi’s AUV to fly consistently at extremely low altitudes and ensure even, comprehensive and accurate coverage of any farm. It can provide aerial application in conditions that
are difficult for traditional aircraft, such as hilly terrain and can even spray at night. Its computercontrolled nozzle setup also allows for precise control for avoiding sensitive areas and handling otherwise difficult crop borders. Kiwi will be offering aerial application as a service and will be partnering with both farmers/ coops and existing pilots/aerial application service providers. Farmers can learn more about spraying with Kiwi online. Ag pilots can supplement their income by partnering with Kiwi to offer automatic aerial application. Kiwi Technologies is excited about the benefits and positive impact that unmanned aerial spraying can offer. This new technology will be a safer, more cost effective and more environmentally friendly way to expand the benefits of aerial application and feed a growing population. Aviation Industry Looks to the Future with Great Promise, to the Past with Deserved Pride
If innovation and adventure are struck on one side of the aviation coin, then the other side bears the marks of achievement and milestone. As aviation builders, we always look to the future; as stewards of the aviation tradition we mark our place within the broad sweep of its history.
A Milestone as a Way of Marking Achievement As agricultural aviators gather from across North America and beyond for NAAA’s Ag Aviation Expo December 3 - 6, we at Pratt & Whitney Canada are thrilled to share some remarkable news. Ag operators can count themselves among the fans of the PT6A who have now flown the mighty engine for a total of 400 million hours. P&WC built and launched the original engine in 1963, but it was turboprop OEMs and PT6A operators who gave it wings and an iconic status that is the envy of the industry. We believe the PT6A engine family will one day reach a billion hours and in far less time than it took to make it to 400 million hours. So we continue to build for that future as we approach the 50,000 mark for the number of PT6A engines produced.
Innovation as a Way of Doing Business An example of that future building is the development of the FAST™ prognostic and diagnostic solution tailored specifically to the Agricultural Aviation industry. The FAST (Flight data Acquisition, Storage and Transmission) system collects data on a host of key engine parameters and transmits it wirelessly for analysis. The results including actionable insights are then shared with the operator. The entire process happens within minutes of the pilot shutting down the engine. By comparing trends over time with baseline engine data, it’s possible to track the engine’s health and provide suitable maintenance recommendations whenever needed. In-flight alerts SG 72 | agairupdate.com
are also available; for example, if the pilot exceeds the torque or the inter-turbine temperature, the FAST aural alerter will sound, avoiding an exceedance – it’s like having a second pilot in the cabin. We understand that for many ag operators their aircraft is their sole source of income and constant availability during the spray season is critical. FAST gives operators advanced insights, allowing them to plan maintenance events during the off season. FAST is FAA certified for installation on all Air Tractor models through a P&WC STC and will soon be available for factory install on new Air Tractor aircraft. Discussions are also under way to introduce FAST to other PT6Apowered ag aircraft.
Getting Rigging Right Recently, P&WC launched a video series to show operators and maintenance technicians how to properly rig the engines on two PT6A-powered, twin-engine aircraft, the King Air B200 and the King Air B350. Work is now being done on a rigging video for single-engine aircraft, including specific videos for the ag Aviation industry. This video will demonstrate proper PT6A engine rigging to achieve consistent performance from one aircraft to another and the optimal performance of the engine, especially relevant in single-engine aircraft. These are just two of the PT6A engine developments that we’ll be talking about at our regular “shop-talk” session on the PT6A engine that will be held Sunday, December 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Atlantis Hotel – Paradise Emerald Room C-E. The currency of aviation is strong because of what it has given the world up to today and what it will contribute in the future. In the words of the late US military flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker: “Aviation is proof that given the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible.”

Time is the Fastest Ship I’ll Pilot
“And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking. Racing around, to come up behind you again.” – Pink Floyd.
It has been a whirlwind of a year since you last read my words. In that time, Pickett Equipment turned 50, we’ve had a bang-up first year with the Handler, our fueling system is taking off, we’ve made some warehouse changes and we’re working on some new projects for aerial applicators. Most of these changes are a direct result of listening to you, the end-user. Our stocking the Handler, for example, is a direct result of an aerial applicator. We’d been in talks with Polywest prior to the 2017 NAAA, but what really sealed the deal was when a customer from Mississippi told the folks from Polywest, “I want this, but I want Pickett’s pump on it.” As a result, we’re now stocking the Handler II, III and IV and proud to do so. The completed, packaged fueling system is a result of a Canadian operator saying how much he loved our products, but importing several different part numbers at different tax rates was cumbersome. Thus, the fueling system was born, saving the end-user time, importation headaches,
and tax issues. Also, it’s easily transported by forklift. So why the Pink Floyd quote? Well, it’s because it seems there’s never enough time to accomplish the tasks I wanted to for you guys, especially when it comes to product development. Aerial applicators have fantastic ideas and we love listening to them and seeing if we can make it work. I have several projects on the stove right now, but we won’t rush a product out until we know it’s the best we can provide for you. With that in mind, if you’ve got an idea or project we can help with, we’re all ears. I encourage you to swing by at NAAA or your local association meeting (we should be at every one) and pick our brains. We’re tinkerers by nature and I love throwing myself into unique projects. From all of us at Pickett Equipment, enjoy the NAAA and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We truly appreciate your business and support. May your 2019 season be one for the record books!

Drift-fiantTM vs. Other Drift Reduction Agents: What They Do and How to Maximize Performance
D
rift reduction is more than just the science of creating bigger droplets that have less potential to drift--it’s about creating the optimum sized droplet that will stay on target while providing better coverage and efficacy. Droplets that are too small (<150 microns) tend to drift while droplets that are too big (>450 microns) decrease coverage and hurt performance. Most drift reduction adjuvants focus only on increasing the size of small droplets to reduce drift, while at the same time making droplets that were already too big even bigger meaning a significant amount of spray droplets still don’t end up on target. Drift-fiant spray adjuvant from AgraSyst is the answer. Drift-fiant is a
SG 80 | agairupdate.com
hybrid of drift reduction technology, excellent at reducing fines while at the same time decreasing the number and size of larger droplets. Drift-fiant concentrates the percentage of spray droplets around the mean, increasing the percentage of optimum sized spray droplets. Both drift reduction and efficacy are increased. Drift Reduction Agents (DRAs) come as polymers, invert emulsions, vegetable polymers and emulsifiers. Polymer types are thickeners and can deform the spray pattern early in a spray job. They are susceptible to pump shear and can stop working before the end of the spray job. Invert emulsions are tricky and can be unreliable. Vegetable polymers are thickeners but not as thick as polymers. However, they are more resistant to pump
shear. Emulsion types are the newest technology and function over the broadest range of applications. Drift-fiant is hybrid technology with a patented twist. Spray droplets are measured in microns. One micron is about the same as a human hair. Volume Median Diameter (VMD) is the value where 50% of the droplets are smaller and 50% are larger. DV10; 10% of droplets are smaller and 90% are larger. DV90: 90% of the droplets are smaller 10% are larger. The Relative SPAN (SPAN): (DV90 – DV10)/ VMD = SPAN. The lower the SPAN, the tighter more consistent the spray droplet size around the mean. The best performance is usually VMD around 250-300 microns. SPAN numbers close to 1 is good. The lower the SPAN the better.

United Turbine — Focusing on Engines
F
ounded in 1991, United Turbine focuses exclusively on PT6™ and PT6T™ engine maintenance, repairs and overhauls. Based very close to the Miami International Airport, Florida, UT has a special understanding of the needs of ag aviation: PT6™ and PT6T™ Twin-Pack Engine MRO, modules, accessories repair and replacement, PT6A-AG light repairs and overhauls, technical support for customers in the field, Fuel and nozzle exchange kits. Turnaround times and utmost quality in workmanship are the top priorities, as the company understands the effect of down time on the bottom line of their customers. To minimize time spent in the shop, UT performs NDT testing on site, stocks a large inventory of parts for the PT6™ engine series (including Twin-Packs) and operates a lease/loan program on selected models.
United Turbine also maintains a test cell on site, allowing for complete engine verification and exhaustive performance check before shipment back to the customer. United Turbine is a repair station certified by the FAA and is also certified by EASA and other national aviation authorities. Customers from all over the world have chosen UT as their engine MRO. UT works closely with customers operating in the harshest environments (desert, maritime, arctic), customizing maintenance and overhaul requirements for these operators, allowing for maximized flight availability. QuickDraw Loading System Provides Immediate Payback The QuickDraw loading and mixing system from SureFire Ag Systems has a long list of benefits. Most importantly, it has an immediate return on investment. “The efficiency that QuickDraw has gained us in loading airplanes has paid for itself this year” said Kyle Scott, owner and pilot at Scott Aviation in Fort Morgan, Colorado. “The easiest place to make up time in this business is on the load pad. The airplane can only go so fast, you can only push so much fuel to it, you can only turn so fast, you can only go so fast across the field. Loading is the easiest place to make up time.” The loading efficiency of QuickDraw shines when multiple airplanes are being managed through a single load system. QuickDraw measures, mixes and loads the airplane in real-time. Premixing and

prebatching are eliminated. “It’s a huge advantage when you are running multiple aircraft because your mix setup is never tied up with a load for a single airplane. It is always ready for the next airplane that comes in. If one guy gets delayed on a particular field; he has a long ferry or he has a cut-up field that takes him longer to where he gets out of line, so to speak, and the next guy beats him in, it’s no big deal. The mix system is ready to go for whoever shows up,” said Kyle Scott. QuickDraw uses a Micro-Motion Mass Flow Meter to measure all chemicals as they are loaded directly into the airplane. Mass Flow Measurement technology measures the density of the material in addition to the velocity. This allows it to measure, with extreme accuracy, any material regardless of physical properties.

Preston Johnson, owner and pilot of Ascend Ag in Wall, SD, has been using QuickDraw since spring of 2016. “The QuickDraw is accurate every time. On one of our high use products we were less than 1% off compared to our inventory.” In Johnson’s operation they do not typically utilize a dedicated person for loading. The QuickDraw has allowed the pilots to load themselves without ever having to touch any chemicals. “Once the recipe has been created any of my pilots, no matter what their computer expertise, can go up to the system pick their recipe and load their airplane with no help whatsoever. It’s done accurately every time.” See QuickDraw in Booth #649,651 at NAAA Ag Aviation Expo in Reno.

“It’s really sped up our loading process, especially when we are running multiple aircraft. We’ve reduced our average load time by at least half. We can load our 402 in under 3 minutes. Our mix system is never tied up with a load for a specific airplane. The pilots love it because they are not wasting time on the load pad and it gets us going way faster in the mornings. The efficiency QuickDraw has gained us has paid for itself in the first year.”
Preston Johnson, Ascend Ag - Wall, SD “We don’t have a designated loader in our operation. With QuickDraw any of my pilots can load themselves and never touch any chemicals. They select their recipe and batch size. The QuickDraw calculates the exact amount of each product needed. We are loading our 500 gallon airplanes in four to four and a half minutes. The Mass Flow Meter is accurate every time. On one of our high use products, we were less than 1% off compared to inventory. ”

Do You Know MORE? Most of us know how expensive the PT6A engines can be when it comes to maintenance, overhauls, etc; especially the older or higher time engines that are used on aircraft that no longer have an appraisal value to justify the expense of the required overhaul at 3600 hours (or 4100 hours on some engines). Many of these engines are still in great condition, making it even harder to justify the expense of an overhaul. Since 1993, MORE Company, Inc. has more than 2500 engines using the FAA approved MORE Supplemental Type Certificates (STCs) in the US and over 50 foreign countries. Commonly known as the “MORE Program”, the MORE Instructions For Continued Airworthiness are a set of directions for maintaining the engine by using an aggressive inspection system; periodic borescope inspection of the hot section, inspection of the compressor and exhaust duct areas, Power Plant-Adjustment Test, spectrometric oil and filter debris analysis, engine vibrational analysis and preventative maintenance. The purpose of this system is to find problems in their early stages and then having found those problems to correct them, promptly. Aerial Application Technology Research Sessions In-Wind and Crosswind Impacts on Swath Patterns Bradley K. Fritz, USDA-ARS, College Station, Texas
E
valuating the effective swath width and adjusting the deposition pattern for uniformity are critical to the efficacy of any given application. Adjusting nozzle placement to maximize pattern uniformity and width while minimizing droplet entrainment into the wing tip vortices is key to a successful application. While pattern testing on agricultural aircraft is typically done with the pilot flying into the wind to maximize spray deposition onto sampling media, the reality is pilots typically make applications in some degree of crosswind conditions. This crosswind has the effect of shifting the pattern in the downwind direction, offsetting the swath placement and potentially stacking up material on the upwind side creating non-uniform droplet size of the deposited material across the swath. This work examines the resulting characteristics from pattern testing trials under both in-wind and crosswind conditions, as well as examines the effect of adjusting nozzle positions on the outward edges of the spray boom. Dr. Fritz is an agricultural engineer with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Aerial Application Technology Research Unit, a group tasked to research all aspects of aerial application technology. Dr. Fritz’s early research efforts centered on the role atmospheric conditions, such as stability and inversion, played in the movement and ultimate fate of aerially

applied sprays with the goal of maximizing on-target deposition with minimal downwind loss. Current research focuses on the role nozzles and spray formulations play in the formation of droplet size and has led to development of new fixed and rotary-wing spray nozzle models and enhanced user interfaces for applicators. Dr. Fritz actively participates in a number of professional organizations and continues to regularly publish and present his research findings through a number of peer-reviewed journals and national and international meetings.

Dr. Price works for the LSU AgCenter where he is a statewide agricultural engineer in charge of pattern testing agricultural aircraft, maintaining the LAIS weather station system and developing new technologies for precision farming. He currently works at the Dean Lee Research and Extension office located in Alexandria, Louisiana.

Development of a System to Measure Dry Material Flow in Real-Time for Pattern Testing
Dry material pattern testing of aircraft is an important procedure in many states and with the increased use of cover crops, other states (with low dry material application needs) are seeing a resurgence in this area. Still, most of the equipment used for dry material spreader pattern testing is based on setting up a series of dry collector bags—in a line— with individual collector vials that are collected and weighed after each run. This system is labor intensive to operate and can be physically demanding on the workers due to the repeated bending over to collect vials. For this reason, the LSU AgCenter and the USDA have been looking at methods to automate this procedure and develop a system that operates in real-time with accuracies that rival current weighing methods (0.01 grams). Current methods being tested are impact plates, miniature individual weigh
On-the-Fly Spray System Adjustments with Individual Nozzle Control
Optimizing an aerial spray system’s performance is critical in managing deposition, increasing productivity and mitigating potential drift. Configuring a spray system is commonly a compromise between these goals and often, once a spray system is configured, it is not changed even though conditions change. A new system that allows electronic control of individual nozzles, from the cockpit, is now commercially available. The system was installed on a working aircraft and tested for swath optimization performance and ability to compensate for changing conditions. The ability of the pilot to alter the spray pattern, and to change rate instantly and from the cockpit was proven. Russ Stocker holds a B.S. Degree in Environmental Toxicology from the University of California at Davis. Russ has more than 46 years of experience in the aerial application industry, including

Development of an Optical Sensor System for Detection of Herbicide Spray Droplets Y. Huang, W. Ma, K. Fisher; USDA-ARS, Stoneville, Mississippi Understanding the factors involved in herbicide spray drift and the magnitude each plays in the process is important when setting up spray systems to ensure effective crop production management and environmental protection. In this study, an optical sensor system was developed using a single broadband programmable LED light source and six broadband detectors at 610, 680, 730, 760, 810 and 860 nm, respectively, to build a monitoring and analysis system for herbicide spray droplets. A rotating system with a stepper motor was built to shift the monofilament line under the optical detectors to collect the signals resulting from the reflectance droplets along the line. To test the system, the LED light intensity was varied continuously. When spraying from a hand-held atomizer from two meters away, the sensor system could identify small (very fine and fine), medium (medium) and large (coarse) droplets. The results indicated that the system could determine the droplet position on the line with 100 percent accuracy without needing to use tracer dye. The wavelength of 610 nm was selected as the best among the six bands to detect droplet sizes. This system has a great potential to aid researchers in better understanding processes involved in the deposition and transport of aerial sprays. Dr. Huang is an agricultural engineer
with the USDA-ARS Crop Production Systems Research Unit in Stoneville, Mississippi. His research interests include aerial application (piloted and unmanned); remote sensing for precision application (space-borne, airborne and ground truthing); soft computing and decision support for precision agriculture; spatial statistics for remote sensing data analysis; and image processing and process automation. Dr. Huang has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers and is an active member of several national and international professional organizations.
Field Evaluation of Commercially Available Small Unmanned Aircraft Crop Spray Systems Wayne Woldt, University of Neb., Lincoln; Dan Martin, USDA-ARS, College Station, Texas Agricultural research and development of small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have been directed toward UAS-enabled sensing to detect features of interest. While compelling, there is an immediate need to increase the breadth and depth of UAS-based research, to move beyond sensing and explore active intervention in agricultural production systems. This paper is focused on the concept of crop protection through ultra-precise Unmanned Aerial Application Systems and seeks to initiate research discussion in this important area of opportunity. Two commercially available small Unmanned Aerial Application Systems (sUAAS – defined as less than 55 lbs. maximum takeoff weight) were evaluated for operational techniques and application system efficacy under dynamic field conditions. The performance of the factory supplied spray systems are documented using traditional aerial spray testing methods that have been modified for sUAAS. Results from initial testing indicate that the different factory supplied systems resulted in significant differences in spray droplet spectra,
deposition and effective spray swath. These unique differences between sUAAS highlight a very real need for the development of standardized sUAAS testing procedures. Dr. Woldt is an associate professor and extension specialist at the University of Nebraska, in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering and the School of Natural Resources. He has been at UNL for 27 years and has developed a research and extension program on the application of unmanned aircraft systems. Wayne is the Director of the Nebraska Unmanned Aircraft Innovation, Research and Education (NU-AIRE) laboratory and his areas of interest include: agriculture, flight safety and land mapping. Specific areas of research and education include: small unmanned aerial application systems, development of a safety beacon for UAS flight operations, development of passive and active sensing technologies for agriculture and natural resources, deployment and flight operations of unmanned aircraft systems and performance of autonomous navigation systems. Wayne has been flying unmanned aircraft for the past six years and obtained the first FAA issued Certificate of Authorization to fly unmanned aircraft in Nebraska. His pilot ratings include private, glider, hot air balloon and remote, with more than 700 hours of total flight time.
Remote Sensing Platforms and Imaging Systems for Agricultural Applications Chenghai Yang, USDA-ARS, College Station, Texas Over the last two decades, numerous commercial and custom-built airborne and high-resolution satellite imaging systems have been developed and deployed for diverse remote sensing applications. While unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) have recently emerged as potential low-cost platforms for remote sensing, they are limited by FAA’s 400-foot flight ceiling, slower speeds, short battery life and smaller

payloads. Moreover, the safety concerns of commercial pilots, in particular aerial applicators and other pilots operating in low-level airspace, need to be addressed before the widespread use of UAS for commercial imaging. This presentation will provide a brief overview of different satellite and airborne remote sensing platforms and imaging systems. Practical application examples will be provided on the use of consumer-grade cameras mounted on agricultural aircraft for precision agriculture and pest management. Dr. Yang is an agricultural engineer with the USDA-ARS Aerial Application Technology Research Unit in College Station, Texas. Dr. Yang’s research focuses on the development and application of airborne multispectral, hyperspectral and thermal imaging systems for precision agriculture and pest management. His recent efforts have focused on developing low-cost imaging systems and image processing techniques for aerial applicators and evaluating these systems for mapping crop pests for site-specific chemical applications. He has authored, or coauthored, more than 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and serves on a number of national and international professional societies.
Effective Swath, Pattern Uniformity and Spray Droplet Spectra from Manned and Unmanned Rotary Wing Aircraft Dan Martin, USDA-ARS, College Station, Texas Rotary-wing aircraft have been used as aerial application platforms for decades. They allow applicators access to difficultto-reach areas and where dangerous obstacles require slower airspeeds with increased maneuverability. Recently, in addition to manned single-rotor aircraft, unmanned multi-rotor aerial application platforms have become commercially available and are being used worldwide. With these new units come new questions. How productive are they, how SG 90 | agairupdate.com
safe are they, how fast can they fly, how long can they stay in the air, how much payload can they carry, what does the spray pattern look like, how wide is their swath, etc.? In this study, we look at the effect of application height and ground speed on the effective swath, pattern uniformity and spray droplet spectra from a Robinson R-44 Raven II and an HSE M6E UAS spray system. We will answer the questions above, which will raise additional questions. Dr. Martin is a research agricultural engineer with the USDA-ARS Aerial Application Technology Research Unit in College Station, Texas. Prior to his tenure with ARS, he directed the aerial application extension program in Louisiana for 10 years, working one on one with aerial applicators as an Operation S.A.F.E. analyst and extension educator. Currently, he conducts variable rate and electrostatic aerial application research. He is an active member of several professional societies, serves on several technical committees and has authored numerous refereed publications.
Incorporation of Risk into AgSync: How Risk Affects Your Bottom Line Sam Dharmasena, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas; David Eby, Aero Flow Systems, Wakarusa, Indiana; Dan Martin, USDA-ARS, College Station, Texas Aerial applicators have always had to deal with hazards such as tree lines, powerlines, concerned neighbors and low-altitude flying at high speeds. Over the past several years, those hazards have steadily increased. We now commonly have wind turbines, organic crops and houses in the middle of production fields. Applicators have always charged “per acre”, but is the risk involved in spraying an acre of corn among a thousand more acres of corn the same as the risk for spraying that same acre right next to an elementary school? It’s a rhetorical question. That extra risk is going to cost the applicator (and the industry)
something extra, whether it is a loss of productivity while waiting for the right wind, a drift claim or poor public relations. The PAASS Program teaches us, “Upon the performance of each rests the fate of all.” So how do we account for this extra risk we take upon ourselves? This talk discusses those risks and shows how they have been incorporated into AgSync to allow aerial applicators to be adequately compensated. Dr. Dharmasena is assistant professor, at the Department of Agricultural Economics, Texas A&M University. Dr. Dharmasena’s current research interests are in the areas of consumer economics and applied demand analysis, agribusiness and food market analysis, behavioral economics, health and nutrition economics, economics of food security, food environments and obesity, causality modeling, probability forecasting and forecast evaluation, and market integration and price discovery. He is an expert in applied econometric modeling and has published in leading peer-reviewed journals. He is member of several national and international professional associations.

Keys to a Successful Night Vision Program
M
any aerial applicators have flown at night for years, but now with night vision goggles (NVGs), pilots are seeing more, maximizing productivity, enjoying constant flying schedules and doing it safer than ever before. While working with thousands of operators and regulatory agencies around the world for more than twenty years, the Aviation Specialties Unlimited team has identified three key recommendations to ensure successful implementation of your night vision program. Initially, an aerial applicator should develop a comprehensive night vision program integration plan that includes aircraft modification that has been evaluated by an aviation authority. Unfortunately, there are people and organizations that think Night Vision Imaging System (NVIS) filtration is simply
a matter of applying NVG film to their equipment which is down right dangerous. Those that do so will certainly experience incompatible light reflections during flight, usually in the most demanding conditions where the risk is greatest. NVIS aircraft modifications should always be performed to standards published by the FAA and other aviation authorities. Fortunately, approved modification techniques and modern materials provide optimal daylight and nighttime readability, add value to your aircraft and are more affordable than ever. Second, operators should ensure that initial and annual training is conducted by instructors with significant civil NVG experience. While there are a great number of well-experienced military NVG instructors in the civil market, their training is based on tactical operations, the opposite of civil NVG flight operations. While military pilots bring valuable NVG experience, they are rarely able to
effectively teach proper use of aircraft searchlights and how those lights can more than double the effectiveness of NVGs. IR (Infrared) searchlights are suitable only for tactical or covert operations and should be avoided in civil operations. Lastly, ensure that you are purchasing NVGs certified for flight and have them inspected and serviced on a regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Inspections and maintenance should be performed by personnel trained by manufacturer authorized instructors, using tools and test equipment specifically designed and calibrated for the task. INTELLIFLOW2 Satloc is pleased to announce the full release of the IntelliFlow2 liquid and dry controller. IntelliFlow2 replaces the IntelliFlow and Fire/Dry Gate controllers, which have been in service for nearly 15 years worldwide. IntelliFlow2 has a number of noticeable advancements including a much smaller size than its predecessor and a more robust enclosure capable of better withstanding the harsh environment of an agricultural aircraft. An industry first, IntelliFlow2 has the capability to control both liquid and dry gate systems using a single ECU. This enables pilots to switch between liquid and dry with the press of a button. One less controller box means one less thing to worry about breaking down, minimizing the potential for downtime. IntelliFlow2 is fully integrated with the G4, and all functions can be accessed from within the user interface alleviating the need for a second display in the cockpit. IntelliFlow2 works with industryleading dry gate providers and interfaces with their hydraulic gate systems. Accompanied by the IntelliFlow2 dry release, Satloc has developed the IF2 Profile Maker desktop application than enables pilots and operators to create a profile to be used within the G4/IF2 dry system. Typical profile information includes: Product Name, pounds/acre, swath width, gate level (in 1/32nd of an inch increments), gate type, and base speed. Profiles can be created from scratch or modified from the existing profile database. Available languages for the IF2 Profile Maker are
English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Additionally, IntelliFlow2 can interface with an optional pressure transducer to display boom pressure on the G4 display or the L7 lightbar. The boom pressure information is logged and can be viewed using MapStar software, providing a critical troubleshooting tool. Pilots will also be able to bump/trim the application rate up or down in small increments using an integrated mechanical switch. These rate adjustments will then be applied for the remaining portion of the field, including prescription maps. This feature works with both liquid and dry applications. SOFTWARE To support the functionality of IntelliFlow2, Satloc has released a software update for the G4 guidance system. Besides adding new features for IntelliFlow2 implementation, G4 has added some highly demanded features. Initial calibration of the gate has been made easy with automatic tuning calibration—this feature will automatically tune the hydraulic gate based on speed and accuracy. Other new G4 features include converting shapefiles to jobs inside the G4 software, additional Hot Keys for IntelliFlow2, new keypad functions for quickly navigating the software, and Portuguese language files. 2018 CONVENTION We hope you have a great time in Reno and look forward to discussing our updated product lineup, so please stop by booth 301 to meet with the Satloc team. Thank you.
