Doutora pela Universidade de São Paulo – USP (1990), com Estágio Sênior nas Universidades de Paris I, Sorbonne (1995/97) e Universidade Politécnica de Valencia (2005/07). Professora e orientadora do PPG – Artes Visuais, UFRGS, pesquisadora 1A do CNPq e líder de Grupo de Pesquisa registrado. Atual presidente da Associação Brasileira de Críticos de Arte, ABCA, membro do Conselho da Associação Internacional de Críticos de Arte, AICA. Foi presidente da Associação Nacional de Pesquisa em Artes Plásticas, ANPAP (1993/95), coordenadora do PPG Artes Visuais da UFRGS (1991/95) e Diretora do Centro Cultural BrasilVenezuela (2003). O foco de seu trabalho é a arte contemporânea em suas relações sistêmicas, com pesquisa atual sobre as articulações desta produção com a internet. Organizou diversas publicações e colabora regularmente com artigos em periódicos nacionais e internacionais. Seus últimos livros foram: Pela Arte Contemporânea: desdobramentos de um projeto, EDUFRGS (2017); As novas regras do jogo: o sistema da arte no Brasil (2014); e Web arte e poéticas do território (2011), este último recebeu o prêmio da ABCA para publicações resultantes de pesquisa. Manteve de 2011 a 2013 uma coluna semanal sobre artes visuais no jornal on-line Sul 21. Fez a curadoria da mostra sobre Web Arte na Bienal Internacional de Curitiba (2013). Coordenou o 1º Simpósio Internacional de Relações Sistêmicas da Arte e o Seminário Internacional Arte Concreta e Vertentes Construtivas, em 2018. Recebeu o prêmio Açorianos de Artes Plásticas e Pesquisador Gaúcho da FAPERGS, ambos em 2018.

Maria Amelia Bulhões holds a PhD from University of São Paulo - USP (1990), with a Senior Fellowship at the Universities of Paris I, Sorbonne (1995/97) and Polytechnic University of Valencia (2005/07). She is a professor and a tutor in the Visual Arts Graduate Program at, UFRGS, being also a CNPq researcher 1A and leader of a registered Research Group. Bulhões is the current president of the Brazilian Association of Art Critics, ABCA, and member of the Board of the International Art Critics Association, AICA. She was president of the National Association of Plastic Arts Researchers, ANPAP (1993/95), coordinator of the UFRGS Visual Arts Graduate Program (1991/95) and Director of the Cultural Center Brazil-Venezuela (2003). Her work focuses in contemporary art in its systemic relations, with current research on the articulations of this production and internet. She has organized several publications and collaborates regularly in national and international journals. Her last books were: For Contemporary Art: unfolding of a project, EDUFRGS (2017); The new rules of the game: the art system in Brazil (2014); and Web art and poetry of the territory (2011), the latter received the ABCA award for publications resulting from research. From 2011 to 2013 she held a weekly column on visual arts in the online newspaper Sul 21. She curated the web art show at the Curitiba International Biennial (2013). She also coordinated the 1st International Symposium on Art Systemic Relations and The International Seminar Concrete Art and Constructive Strands, in 2018. She received the Açorianos Prize, category Visual Arts, and FAPERGS Prize for Researchers, both in 2018.
