SUPER AMERICAN CIRCUS Coming to the Florida State Fairgrounds

N

amed “America’s Best Clown” by Time Magazine, the world’s most renown comedic daredevil, Bello Nock (with the iconic foot-high spiked hair) is ushering in a new era for the Circus, with his new show, The Super American Circus. The Super American Circus, a modern one-ring circus, will showcase some of the greatest talent in the world at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa for three shows each day on Saturday, November 17th (1:00, 4:30 and 8:00 pm) and Sunday, November 18th (1:00, 4:00 and 7:00 pm). With the demise of Ringling Brothers, the great American circus experience has been missing. But with the Super American Circus Bello is proclaiming, “The Circus is Back!” This Super American Circus features an All-Star, award-winning cast from around the world that has been featured in shows such as Ringling Brothers, Cirque du Soleil, Big Apple Circus and World Circus competition in Monte Carlo. Headlining is World Famous Comic Daredevil Bello Nock,

who will be appearing throughout the show in thrilling acts such as the Wheel of Destiny (Bello will run, dance and skip rope blind-folded on and in a giant rotating wheel high above the crowd). Bello has performed for Presidents, Kings and some of the most high-profile people in the world, captivating audiences as the star in the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus, as well as the Big Apple Circus. He has performed some of the most recognized stunts, such as having walked a high wire over landmarks like Lincoln Center in New York City, Reliant Stadium in Houston, and the first ever high wire walk at sea (a Guinness World Record for the “Longest Tightrope Walk Unsupported” (not on land) between two ships at sea). He also performed on a Trapeze under a helicopter hovering over the Statue of Liberty. Also performing is Bello’s daughter, Annaliese Nock, known as Dare Daughter. Annaliese appeared on this season of Amer6

ica’s Got Talent in the Exploding Coffin. Bello and Annaliese are joined by PD Weisman, who will be featured in the Wheel of Death, and on the High Wire performing stunts never seen before. The Flying Royals, a seven-person Daredevil Flying Trapeze act, will be presenting the world’s only Criss Cross Flying act! Criss crossing in each other’s path of flight makes this act even more dangerous than a conventional flying act. The Motorcycle Globe of Death features stunt riders that will ride their LED Motorcycle’s upside down and all around, defying gravity in a Giant Ball of Steel. Eric Aguilar will amaze the audience with his Chair-Stacking equilibristic excellence. Noel Aguilar will perform his incredible speed juggling. Just to name a few of the acts that will amaze or make you laugh out loud. Let’s not forget the Epic finale: The Human Cannonball Shot over the rotating blades of a helicopter!!! This stunt has never been performed indoors. Daredevil Acrobat Andrew Pratt will attempt to recreate the one-of-a-kind stunt designed and performed by Bello on America’s Got Talent last year. The Circus will also feature a Family Fun Zone. Opening one hour before the show and during intermission. There will be giant slides, face painting, and the original BATMOBILE, BATCYCLE and of course ROBIN’S Sidecar. Come early and get your photo. Who knows Batman may even show up. Tickets for the Super American Circus are $12 for adults and $8 for Children. The SuperAmerican Circus will also be donating $1 from every ticket sold to Flight to the

North Pole. Tickets are available via www.superamericancircus.com/ the Expo Hall Box Office (show days only), and by phone at 1-941-870-7444. Free Children Tickets are available at local area merchants and participating 7-11 stores.

B

usch Gardens Howl-O-Scream has returned on select nights through Oct 28, 7:30 - 1 a.m. From terrifying new houses and scare zones to creepers on coasters, an air of fear will consumes the park until there is nowhere to hide. New houses designed to terrify include: INSOMNIA - Every door in this haunted asylum leads to your worst nightmare and the doctor is accepting new patients. Fears turn into fate as victims are forced to stay awake and receive twisted treatments from demented doctors. SIMON’S SLAUGHTERHOUSE – By merely stepping inside, you have agreed to play Simon’s sick and twisted games. Entering this horrifying realm requires a journey through the Meat Market where cannibalistic creatures feast on the weak as they add to their Monster Menu of human hors d’oeuvres. Due to the intensity of Simon’s Slaughterhouse and the Meat Market, this area of the park is suggested for a 17 and older audience. Howl-O-Scream is intended for a mature audience. This year’s event contains intense adult content such as violence, gore, and blood. Howl-O-Scream 2018 is a separately-ticketed night event. No costumes are allowed. For the extreme Howl-O-Scream fanatic, a Front Line Fear pass grants access to all haunted houses and special discount offers throughout the park. TRAVELOGUE

THE GODFREY Story and Photos by Melissa W. Martino

Hotel & Cabanas Tampa WTR Pool & Grill

T

he Godfrey Hotel & Cabanas occupies the footprint of the former Bay Harbor Hotel, and that is where the similarity ends. The new Godfrey has been reimagined into a chic but casual and inviting 276 room hotel located in Tampa’s Rocky Point neighborhood. Situated right on the water, guests have a view of either Tampa Bay or the city skyline. The rooms have private balconies or patios, and all the amenities you have come to expect from a stylish hotel — free Wi-Fi, room service, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers and mini-refrigerators. The hotel’s WTR Pool area has fast become the place to be, with luxurious daybeds, chaise lounges and handcrafted cocktails. You can go a step further into indulgence with private cabanas with TVs and refrigerators. The WTR Grill is not the usual dull pool snack bar by any means. It is an excellent restaurant under the helm of Chef Joe Garcia, who has created some very tasty dishes with healthy, smaller portions. Some popular dishes are the Charred Caesar Salad with Parmesan Reggiano, crostini, anchovies, and house Caesar Dressing; the Proscuitto & Arugula Flatbread with fig and whipped goat cheese; and Seared Scallops with grilled Swiss chard and polenta cake topped with pan seared fresh diver scallops, finished with white wine Beurre Blanc. There’s always room for some dessert, and I would suggest the Beignet Bites as a real treat. Weekend brunches and pool parties with DJs and live bands solidify the Godfrey as a great destination for the perfect get-away! The Godfrey is located at 7700 W Courtney Campbell Causeway, Tampa, FL 33607. For more information, please call (813) 281-8900 or visit www.godfreyhoteltampa.com

NATIONAL BRASS ENSEMBLE Gabrieli: Featuring Music For Brass by John Williams

he National Brass Ensemble is comprised of 26 of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the United States. Their repertoire includes excerpts from Giovanni Gabrieli’s innovative Sacrae symphoniae (1597), arranged for this ensemble by trombonist Tim Higgins, and the debut of Music for Brass, a new work by celebrated film composer John Williams. The recording has been inspired by an historic, Grammy Award-winning recording, The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli, featuring the legendary brass ensembles of the Chicago Symphony and the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras. It has been long admired as the definitive modern performance of Giovanni Gabrieli’s works.

PATRICE WILLIAMSON & JON WHEATLEY Comes Love: A Tribute to Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass Patrice Williamson has always drawn favorable comparisons to legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. She has been honored with “Best of Boston” award, and a nominee for “Best Jazz Vocalist” by the Kahlua Boston Music Awards. Her colleagues say “Patrice is a hard-swinging interpreter and a refreshingly accomplished jazz vocal improviser.” Ran Blake sums it up: “It’s a breathtaking voice.” Here she and Jon Wheatley shine as they celebrate the collaboration between Fitzgerald and legendary guitarist Joe Pass. www.riverlily.com

PHIL HAYNES & FREE COUNTRY 60/69 My Favorite Things

M

y Favorite Things (1960-1969) concludes a trilogy by Haynes’ free-wheeling “jazz-grass” string band Free Country, where he’s joined by longtime collaborators Hank Roberts (cello and vocals), Jim Yanda (guitar) and Drew Gress (bass). On this last installment the quartet takes on everything from John Coltrane, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to Burt Bacharach and the theme from Star Trek. Released over nearly two decades, the band’s albums encompass nearly the entire history of American popular music in their own irreverent, stripped-down fashion.

PAUL McCARTNEY Egypt Station

S

www.capitolrecords.com

haring a title with one of Paul’s own paintings, Egypt Station is the first full album of all-new McCartney music since 2013’s NEW. Preceded by two of its tracks just released as double A-sides—ballad “I Don’t Know” and raucous stomper “Come On To Me”—Egypt Station was produced (with the exception of one track) by Greg Kurstin. Egypt Station’s 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe. Between the opening and closing instrumentals “Station I” and “Station II,” each song finds Paul capturing a place or moment before transporting the listener seamlessly to the next destination.

TIM COLE & BAO BAO CHEN Small Island Big Song

C

ole & Chen set out to trace the oceanic songlines from Madagascar to Hawai’i; from New Zealand to Taiwan following the voyages of the ancient seafarers an ancestry which can be traced back over 5,000 years, to an island we now call Taiwan. Visiting 16 island nations, the couple recorded with many of the regions most respected cultural voices in powerful natural settings, using all acoustic instruments, local languages and compositions. The songs developed into a lush, poignant and playful soundtrack to the region and its people. www.smallislandbigsong.com

ERIN MCDOUGALD Outside The Soiree

E

ver feel left out of the party? Vocalist Erin McDougald’s new recording, Outside the Soiree, is a heartfelt ode to all the outsiders. It offers a thematic narrative explored through “McDougald’s evocative artistry” (Chicago Music Guide), a voice that Jazz Improv Magazine has called a “rare instrument to be savored... sweet and spicy, positively mercurial.” The subject matter is poignantly expressed from unexpected musical angles as Erin modernizes and reinterprets obscure standards, her own original composition and genres “outside” the jazz idiom. www.flappergirlsings.com/

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG - Oct 16 - 21 Called “a gut-busting hit” (The New York Times) and “The funniest play Broadway has ever seen” (HuffPost), this classic murder mystery is chock-full of mishaps and madcap mania delivering “A riotous explosion of comedy” (Daily Beast). Welcome to opening night of The Murder at Haversham Manor where things are quickly going from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines), it’s sure to bring down the house! HELLO, DOLLY! - Dec 4 - 9 Tony Award-winning Broadway legend Betty Buckley stars in Hello, Dolly! Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, director Jerry Zaks’ “gorgeous” new production (Vogue) is “making people crazy happy!” (The Washington Post). Breaking box of-

fice records week after week and receiving thunderous raves on Broadway, this HELLO, DOLLY! pays tribute to the original work of legendary director/choreographer Gower Champion – hailed both then and now as one of the greatest stagings in musical theater history. LES MISÉRABLES - Jan 15 - 20 Cameron Mackintosh presents the new production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells a story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Featuring the beloved songs “I Dreamed A Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” and many more, this uplifting story has become one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history. HUNDRED DAYS - Jan 15 - Mar 24 Hundred Days is an uncensored, exhilarating and heartrending true story about embracing uncertainty, taking a leap and loving as if you only had 100 days to live. Explore the Surreal Landscape of Dalí’s Mediterranean World

C

Clyde Butcher Reveals Dalí’s Painted Landscapes as His Own Photographed Dreamscapes Thru Nov 25

urrently at the Dali Museum, Clyde Butcher: Visions of Dalí’s Spain delivers a glimpse into Salvador Dalí’s homeland. The Dalí commissioned Clyde Butcher, the nature photographer known as the “Ansel Adams of the Florida landscape,” to travel to Spain to capture a series of technically brilliant, epically scaled photographs. Throughout his career, Butcher’s photographs have altered people’s perceptions about the Florida environment, and now, will alter the understanding of the surrealist master and the landscape that made him. The Dalí’s new exhibition features 41 original photographs that transport viewers to the striking Catalonian coast, where they are invited to not only appreciate the beauty of Dalí’s beloved environs but also to contemplate the landscapes from an alternate perspective. For this project, Butcher was asked to produce a series of black and white photographs documenting the dramatic splendor of Dalí’s world. “Butcher’s unique abilities to capture the power of light, land and water in black & white deliver spectacular insights into the landscape that had such a profound influence on Dali’s vision and obsessions,” said Hank Hine, Dalí Museum Executive Director. The show is Butcher’s first photographic study

Port Lligat House of Spain. He captured the sublime beauty of Dalí’s Mediterranean world in exquisite detail through large scale, super-sharp monochromatic images. “Butcher did an incredible job of capturing the essence of this land that created Dalí,” said Peter Tush, Dalí Museum Curator of Education and exhibit curator. “The series of photographs displayed in the exhibition truly takes the viewer on an epic journey. “ Butcher himself will host book signings at The Dalí on Sept 29, and Nov 3. Visitors can also join Tush for a “Butcher + Dalí” Coffee with a Curator session on Tues, July 3. The exhibit runs through Nov 25. For more information and events details visit www.thedali.org.

A Claire Clairmont Historical Mystery by Marty Ambrose

873, Florence. Claire Clairmont, the last survivor of the ‘haunted summer of 1816’ Byron/Shelley circle, is living out her final years in genteel poverty, but the appearance of British tourist, William Michael Rossetti, brings hope that she may be able to sell some of her memorabilia to earn enough cash to support her and her niece/companion, Paula. But Rossetti’s presence in Florence heralds a cycle of events that links the summer of 1816 – when Claire conceived an ill-fated child with George Gordon, Lord Byron, when Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, and when four tempestuous lives came together – to a tragic death. As Claire begins to unravel the truth, she must go back to that summer of passion to discover the identity of her old enemy.

Marty Ambrose is a college teacher and has been a published writer for 15 years for Avalon Books, Kensington Books, and Thomas & Mercer. She is currently doing research for her next book in the trilogy, called A Shadowed Fate. Severn House • www.severnhouse.com

s a new pier rises where the last inverted pyramid stood downtown St. Petersburg, here’s a look back at the history of the piers. Commerce, tourism, recreation, and even the quest for eternal youth were the primary incentives for building piers along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront as early as 1854. For more than 160 years, developers and entrepreneurs pushed wooden or concrete structures from the shoreline to the deeper waters of Tampa Bay. Railroads were behind the early development, allowing cargo loads to be transferred from ship to rail with the least amount of effort. A large and profitable fishing industry evolved. Electrically powered trolley cars shuttled tourists to and from cruise ships. Promoters built bathhouses, spas, and bait houses to entice locals and visitors, and casino gathering halls of various, often controversial, styles were proposed, built, destroyed, loved, and detested. Competing piers were built only 10 feet apart. Mother Nature’s elements, including a hurricane, and politics ravaged most of the remaining structures. St. Petersburg Museum of History education director and historian Nevin D. Sitler has combined images curated for a semipermanent pier exhibit with more than 150 other photographs for this entertaining look at the “front door to the Sunshine City.” 94

Antiperspirants, Anyone?

Dear Mark: I love the El Cortez in Las Vegas that you lauded last week, except for one thing: They sure do sweat the money. It is probably one of the sweatiest shops in Las Vegas. Otherwise, as you said, you just cannot beat the low limits, limited deck sizes, and the rules. Tommy C. “Sweating the money,” Tommy, is a casino term that describes how some casino employees react when a gambler wins money from the house. When a pit boss is gawking a dealer who is dumping the tray, you’re witnessing it. In reality, dealers have no control on whether or not a player wins any money. At the end of any shift, all blackjack table results are combined for an aggregate sum, which translates to a win/loss volume, with variances

acknowledged for large bettors. To the suits upstairs, it just pencils out as either a good or a bad day. However, on the gaming floor, certain shift supervisors, floor managers, pit bosses, and yes, to some extent, dealers – they want you to win, that is, as long as they are being tipped – sweat the money. The iconic El Cortez Hotel and Casino, the cornerstone of downtown Las Vegas, is the longest continuously running hotel and casino in Las Vegas. What you see is what you get: no gimmicks, no glitter. However, Tommy, as you noticed, if you use any spread at the El Cortez, they tend to back you off. You can probably get away with spreading bets between $10-$25, but if you go to $10-$50, a floor supervisor rubbernecking your game will probably make you flat bet that kind of action, or, worse yet, move you along. Unfortunately, in today’s gaming environment, you are not going to see many decent blackjack games at these smaller, “where the locals go” joints, but, at least, the El Cortez still delivers the best playing conditions in Vegas. Nevertheless, the last thing some pit bull wants is for some counter varying their bets from one hand to the next, knowing full well whether the next hand will favor either the player or the house. Your average pit boss does not want these monetary opportunities in high-count situations, specifically with a decent wad of cash www.AccentOnTampaBay.com

on the layout, changing a negative expectation game into a positive one, especially on their watch. With the Cortez’s player-friendly rules, in their mind, backing you off the game, makes sense. They are there to protect the casino’s profits. They realize you are trying to beat the math of the game, but they disapprove because they rely on the same simple arithmetic to make money. And yet, they also know that few players play basic strategy perfectly, and even fewer can execute counting down a deck, beat the tar out of them, and ask for the keys to the front door. It’s been my many-year observation that these sharpened players are so few and far between that I decided early on in my career to NOT sweat the money for every Tom, Dick, or Harry sitting tableside. Believe me, when I say, I could count down a deck with the best of them; but I can also count on one hand how many players I chased off a game, and how very few times, we, the casino that is, got the crap kicked out of us. The real deal here, Tommy, is that gamblers will go to any establishment where the dealers are friendly, the game has decent rules, the cocktails are flowing, and the casino doesn’t sweat the money, too much. On a whole, the non-counting player probably won’t draw much heat, so, in my humble opinion, the El Cortez fits that bill. 101

Collecting Cantonware: George Washington’s Blue/White China T

he highly collectible ceramics called Cantonware is a cobalt blue and white porcelain first produced in the port city of Canton (Guangzhou), China. Cantonware is known by various names associated with its sea-trade history including: Chinese export porcelain, ballast ware china, China trade porcelain, etc. Named for the port city of Canton, Cantonware was enjoyed prominence for its secret ceramic recipe and closely-guarded kiln production techniques. Since the 1600s, Cantonware china was traded from China to ports worldwide. It was heavy enough to act as the ballast of a ship situated down low to help keep the ship stable. Made in the Chinese province of Ching-Te Chen and decorated in enameling studios in Canton, Cantonware was introduced to American collectors by a Rhode Island merchant. This businessman received a shipment of Cantonware as early as the late 1700s, after which Cantonware was used by many Colonial Americans. Used as their everyday china, Cantonware was found in circa 1790s inventory records of Mount Vernon, the Virginia home of President George and Martha Washington located near Washington, DC. When the Revolutionary war ended and China trade became popular, Cantonware came to the New Republic. From 1784 to circa 1850, about 2 million pieces of Cantonware were exported to North America. By the late 1830s to 1860, Cantonware fell out of

favor as a result of the Opium wars when China lost territory and power to the European powers of Great Britain and France. The Opium Wars weakened trade practices and spiked market prices associated with Cantonware. Early Cantonware from circa 1784-1810 featured hand-painted decorations and well-built porcelain bodies. Later Cantonware lacked the quality of first period Cantonware. It can be identified by today’s collectors by its drab appearance, faulty clay form, and lack of precise decoration. Cantonware is highly recognizable for its blue/white color scheme and handpainted subjects such as Asian tea houses, pagodas, foot bridges, sail boats, meandering waterways, mountains, and figures. Asian imagery and borders of lattice or criss-cross and scallops, swags, clouds, diagonal lines, or wave patterns are also common to Cantonware. By the late 19th Century, Cantonware was marked with the word “China” written or stamped on each piece. While blue/white porcelains are common and Cantonware was popular so reproductions occurred. Portuguese reproductions of Cantonware were commonly marked “Mottahedah” on the underside of the base. Major museums boast collections of Cantonware including the Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, FL, Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, NY, and Museum of the American China Trade in Milton, MA, to name a few. Angel’s Landing Gorge, Zion National Park, Utah

A

ngels Landing soars 1,488 ft above the Virgin River. Reach the summit and your reward is a spectacular view of Zion Canyon and surrounding cliffs. Angel’s Landing was named by Ethelbert Bingham in 1916 when he exclaimed to his friends, “only an angel could land on that!” Nearby, The Organ juts out toward Angel’s Landing. Some think the wind passing through the pass sounds like a pipe organ.
